A love letter to the National Party from your (not so) secret admirers
Our darling Nats,
We can’t hold it in any longer. We just had to say it: we love you. You’ve done more for us than any Government in recent memory.
From the moment you walked into Parliament, calculator in hand, we knew you were different. Others talked about fairness, accountability, consumer rights... But you saw us. Truly saw us.
While Kiwis tried to hold us to account for dodgy lending and false disclosures, you stepped in. You’re changing the law especially for us! Retrospectively! We don’t know how we’ll ever repay you (and, thanks to you, we won’t have to).
When our lawyers panicked about consumer class actions, you soothed us. Our problems were solved. What’s a little rule of law between friends? We adore your boldness. Your discretion. Your devotion to keeping us one step ahead (ASB sends its love).
Sure, critics say it undermines consumer protection, damages New Zealand’s reputation and is totally counter to the rule of law. But what’s a little reputational risk compared to our record profits?
Forever yours (in profit),
ASB & ANZ
NOTHING TO SEE HERE...
WHO DOES NATIONAL STAND FOR?
Instead of standing up for households ripped off by dodgy lending and false disclosures, Nicola Willis, Scott Simpson and the National Party are rushing through a retrospective law to protect big banks from being held accountable in court. That’s right, the National Party are siding with the big end of town to bail out the banks instead of mum and dad consumers. Willis and Simpson are rewriting the rules to shield banks from class action lawsuits and having to pay fair compensation. Legal experts have slammed it as “A serious erosion of consumer protection”.
“A serious erosion of consumer protection” – NZ Law Society
THE FACTS THE NATS DONT WANT YOU TO KNOW
Thousands of Kiwis will lose the right to fair compensation
Class actions already in progress will be derailed or blocked by this proposed retrospective law change
Top lawyers and the NZ Law Society warn this move undermines trust in the rule of law
Banks posted record profits while the Nats scramble to cover for them. Whose side are they on?
GOVERNMENT FOR WHO?
Nicola Willis talks tough, but when the big banks came crying, she’s now acting fast to bail them out.
