Tcc Welcomes Back Jim Bannach And Jeff Nowmos

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE

Doug Knight

It was a hot summer! I am writing this column during the sweltering heat wave of July. I am looking forward to crisp fall weather, golf, football, sweater evenings, leaves changing color, and the return to Tavistock of two of our most highly-regarded entertainers; Jim Bannach and Jeff Nowmos.

Beginning Wednesday, September 4th, Jim Bannach begins a weekly engagement with our Club playing music each Wednesday through December 18th. Jim has had an amazing career, spanning thirty-eight years at the Windrift Restaurant in Avalon and several other ocean-side venues where he attracts standing-room only crowds. Jim is an extraordinary vocalist and musician, playing a wide repertoire of current hits and standards and your favorite requests. Jim plays each Wednesday from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.

SUNSET GRILLE

Jeff Nowmos will again be playing his acoustic guitar each Friday from 6:00 to 9:30 PM. Jeff plays a lively stream of Beatles, Eagles, Cole Porter, bossa nova, and just about everything in between. Jeff provides a perfect background for a laidback Friday night dining experience.

Be sure to join us on September 6th, for our very popular Brewfest! $85 all inclusive. Beer drinkers rejoice!

Then on September 7th, Camp Tavistock will take over the tenth hole. S’Mores, hot dogs, burgers, tents, sleeping bags…I could go on and on. It’s an overnight camp out under the stars. We can’t wait.

The REALLY REALLY popular Cigar Café Dinner is set for September 18th on the patio. This event is sold out but you can still call to join the waitlist!

See you at the Club!

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE

The Entertainment Committee and Staff of TCC have done it once again! The 2nd Annual Chip and Sip took place on August 17th with 75 members participating in this event. Chef Kelly and his team had four food/drink stations under tents in different parts of the specialized designed 9-hole par 3 course. Each tent had a different food/drink theme which made it exciting to see what amazing creation was waiting for you. Certainly, was not an event where you would go hungry! After the golf was completed, members met in the Coulter Room where a fantastic dessert was served. Be on the lookout in 2025 for Chip and Sip to be on the calendar. Finally, a BIG THANK YOU goes out to all the members of the Tavistock Staff who helped make this event such a success!

Member Spotlight COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

Joseph Malcarney

Meet Liza Cartmell

Where and when did you start playing golf?

My mother founded Junior golf where I grew up in Rumson. She had five kids and wanted to get us out of the house. I was seven and it was at Rumson Country Club.

How long have you been at Tavistock and who was your sponsor when coming into the Club?

The Bitonti’s sponsored us when we moved into Haddonfield 2004/2005.

Most memorable playing moment at TCC?

My hole in one on 13! It was from the blues with my 8 iron.

What is your favorite hole at TCC and why?

12 is my favorite hole, I just like it. I don’t always play it well, but I like the way it is set up. I score the most consistently on 17, 14 is the one that gives me the most trouble.

What is your go to meal at TCC?

The chicken Waldorf salad with pumpkin bread. It’s the ladies’ lunch when we are finished playing, the servers already know what I am having.

If we put a “Liza Special” sandwich at the halfway house, what would it be? I will go with the sausage and peppers.

Who would be in your bucket list golf group at TCC?

Michelle Wie, another tall golfer and I really like Rory McIlroy, I think I would be way to intimated to play with Tiger. I would also love to see Jordan Spieth in action out here, I really like his short game.

Mr. Reliable, what club has this name in your bag? Would have to be my pitching wedge and next would be my 7 iron.

Anything odd or special that you keep in your golf bag?

I just took them out recently because there were too many, but I started collecting pencils from the clubs that I go and play. I don’t know when, but I am going to turn them into a display tray once I have enough.

When you aren’t enjoying TCC what else are you doing?

Gardening, alllll the time. Also, reading and heading out for dinner. Buddakan is my go to and we also like Talula’s. We like to head into the city and we will try different spots too. We recently celebrated our 43rd wedding anniversary and headed into the city. When we don’t head into the city we like to go into downtown Haddonfield and enjoy Gass & Main, The Little Hen and Verona.

Favorite event or tradition at TCC?

The 100 Year Anniversary party was incredible. The Club just blew the doors off. I wish we did something like that every year or biannual.

One thing you could add or change if you had rule for the day at TCC?

I would like to put in effect, throughout the year and not just for the summer, the 24 hour rule loosening the Saturday-Sunday restrictions on morning play. All regular golf members (including couples that both work) that feel comfortable playing on weekends should be able to sign up the day prior for morning slots if there are open times.

What do you like most about Tavistock?

Convenience is the biggest! I live right down the hill! I forget stuff all the time and I can just turn right around and go get it. I love the course; it’s a great course and the convenience makes it that much better.

MIXERS AND ELIXERS: HOW TO UP YOUR COCKTAIL GAME AT HOME

Anthony Walko, Assistant Food & Beverage Director

Over the past few years, canned cocktails and the RTD (ready to drink) market has exploded. I am sure many of you have had a High Noon, Surfside, or some other product that was as easy as popping a can open. While they are great for your summertime BBQ or going down the shore, fall days at home lend themselves to crafting a great cocktail of your own. I have a few ingredients, tips, and tricks to share with you; including staples on my bar shelf and some techniques for you to use.

Magic Ingredients That Make Everything Taste Good

favorite is to add it to an espresso martini for an unexpected depth of flavor.

Tips and Tricks!

There are a few small things that can make you feel like you should be behind a professional bar anytime you want to go make a drink.

1. Don’t forget Balance! – Drinks are a lot like a dish you would cook. Find ways to use acid (citrus juice), sweetness (a simple syrup), heat (jalapeno marg anyone?), or even salt (some flaky Maldon salt on an espresso martini) to really bring flavors to life.

This is a saying that I tend to use whenever I explain to people ways to really elevate a cocktail. Here are two liquors that I keep on my shelf that are game changers!

1. St. Germain: This has been around for a while now, and it is just so delicious. A sweet, floral liquor made with elderflowers. Mix with some champagne, add to a gin and tonic, or even put in a margarita to introduce a delicate and gorgeous flavor.

2. Amaro: An amaro is an Italian digestivo (usually enjoyed after dinner) made from different herbs, barks, spices, citruses, and the list goes on. They can carry a multitude of flavors, from something more perfume-y and somewhat medicinal (in a good way) or more earthy and herbaceous. A personal favorite is Quintessia Amaro Nonino, which is incredibly balanced with a touch of vanilla. Perfect to mix with bourbon, but my

2. Shake, Shake, Shake! – Can’t stress this one enough. Shaking a drink gives it proper dilution, marries all the ingredients together, and gives you a cohesive final product. I always shake really hard for 1520 seconds! It is worth it!

3. Finish Strong! – Time to tell you to invest in the double straining method. One strainer for your shaking tin, and another that’s a fine strainer to catch all those ice chips. It’ll result in great texture and beautiful presentation. Find a garnish to match your drink, and you are ready to enjoy!

So, it is time for you to invest in a great cocktail mixing kit and find some fun fall drinks to make! There are so many websites with great recipes, and once you learn the basics, explore some flavors on your own. Can’t wait to see you all around the Club to hear what you’ve been making.

We are excited to welcome back Wendy Boulton…just in a different way!

Most of you probably remember Wendy. Wendy retired from Tavistock Country Club in 2021 after being our prized and beloved Horticulturist for over 39 years. She has shared endless advice with both members and staff alike about her love of all things pertaining to plants and flowers over the years and is now going to answer your gardening questions!

To kick things off this month Wendy is answering: “What should I be doing with my garden in September?”

If you have a question about your garden, soil, planting, etc. please submit it to mscanzano@tavistockcc.com for Wendy to answer in a future newsletter.

To plant a garden is to believe in

tomorrow

Greetings to my Tavistock friends! It’s been three years since my retirement, and I am pleased to have been asked to be a contributor to the Tavistock News focusing on ornamental plants. I look forward to giving advice, so feel free to “pick my brain”.

September is here and the first frost is yet more than a month away.

You might ask what you should do in your garden this month? You’ve enjoyed your flowers and veggies for a nice long summer. Most of the hard-working annuals and perennials are still at it, as well as vegetable production, so continue harvesting those vegetables. For the annuals, if they have become leggy and haggard (coleus and petunias come to mind), they would benefit from a trim and feeding (liquid fertilizer formulated for flowers) early in the month. This will stimulate a flush of new growth and flowering for most of their time left in the season. As for the herbaceous perennials, continue to deadhead the spent blossoms, as this will spur more flowering. Late in September, or into October, you can then leave the drying seedheads on the plants, providing

our songbirds with a feast for their pre- winter and winter needs. Some of the most appreciated flowering perennials are Rudbeckia (Black Eyed Susan), Echinacea ( Coneflower), Gaillardia (Blanket Flower), Aster, Sunflower, Solidago (Goldenrod), and some of our native grasses. I personally leave these plants through the winter and do an early spring cleanup. It may look a bit messy to those who like a more manicured appearance, but trust me, wildlife will benefit.

Late September into mid-October is a good time to divide perennials should they need it.

They want about six weeks of root growth before winter freeze to develop a good root system. Penn State Extension https://extension.psu.edu has a wealth of articles, particularly one on perennial division. September is also a good time to plan your spring flower bulb display.

Coleus

Gaillardia

They need to be planted six to eight weeks before the soil starts to freeze. If you are inclined to purchase your own bulbs online, there are a multitude of reputable suppliers. Do know that they tend to run out of stock quickly, so order early. Usually the grower/supplier will not ship until the proper planting time, but you can go ahead and reserve what you want. They will ask for your agriculture planting zone, which in the Haddonfield area is zone 7. If you choose to wait and buy locally, inspect the bulbs for damage/disease, if possible. This will present as brown or black bruising on clean flesh, and sometimes with a bluish mold, or totally shriveled. Remember these bulbs were harvested many months ago and cold stored. If they were handled by a third party, i.e. big box stores, they may not have been cared for properly and quality may not be assured.

starts growing in spring. Hydrangea species have both, either old wood or new wood, depending on which species you have. The ones commonly seen everywhere are the mophead and lacecaps (Hydrangea macrophylla and Hydrangea serrata). These are the big leaved, big flowered shrubs in pink, blue or white. These are old wood bloomers and should not be pruned in late summer or fall or there will not be flowers the next year. What kind do you have? A good argument for saving those plant tags that come with new purchases, or, if you are not sure of your existing shrubs, an online search with pictures can help identify which you have.

September

through October is also a good time to plant evergreen trees and shrubs of all kinds.

What NOT to do this late in the season

There are several spring flowering shrubs that should not be pruned in fall. Some of these would be Azalea, Rhododendron, some varieties of Viburnum and Spirea, and of course, the beautiful and confusing world of Hydrangea. Most of these are old wood bloomers- that is to say, they set their blossom buds the previous year, versus new wood bloomers-what

The weather is milder and the soil is still warm, allowing healthy root development before winter dormancy. Make sure to water your new purchases the day before planting to lessen stress!

Again, I am happy to be back in touch with everyone at Tavistock and am looking forward to answering those garden questions.

Fondly, Wendy Boulton
