A Letter From The Greens Committee
THE GREENS COMMITTEE
Jason Walker, Greens ChairpersonDear Members,
We did it! Despite encountering our first measurable snowfall in two years, we’ve weathered a reasonably mild winter, and now Spring has finally arrived. I am pleased to share an update on the winter work carried out on the golf course and the progress of our Golf Course Master Plan project.
For those of you who have had the chance to venture out onto the course, you’ve likely noticed the improvements Vic outlined in his recent letter. Over the winter months, our team has been hard at work cleaning up the area between the 12th & 17th holes, as well as clearing the area to the right of the 5th hole. This included stabilizing the drainage ditch, removing undergrowth, and installing new drainage systems. These initiatives align with the objectives set forth by the Greens Committee, aiming to enhance the beauty of our course while ensuring drier playing conditions. Thanks to our diligent drainage and tree management plans, we’ve achieved some of the driest course conditions Tavistock has ever seen, resulting in consistently excellent day-to-day playability. Furthermore, we’ve experienced fewer closures following significant rainfall events, allowing for more golfing opportunities.
As you may recall from last year, the Club enlisted the expertise of Jaeger Kovich from ProperGolf.com as our new Golf Course Architect, with the primary objective of developing a new Master Plan for Tavistock. After thorough review and approval by the Greens Committee and the Board of Governors, I am thrilled to announce that the plan is now ready to be unveiled to the membership!
At our upcoming Annual Meeting later this month, we will showcase displays of the overall plan as well as individual hole designs. Jaeger will be in attendance to discuss the plans and address any questions. I’ll also be sharing some additional insights during my annual committee presentation. It’s important to emphasize that this plan represents a significant departure from the approach taken in the 2000s. Our new Master Plan serves as a comprehensive blueprint for both the present and the future, addressing many of the challenges our course currently faces. Consequently, there will be minimal disruptions, with closures limited to standard winter hole closures that we’ve come to expect.
I want to extend a huge thank you to our Superintendent, Vic Frederico, and his incredible team for all their hard work on the winter projects, ensuring the course is in top shape for Opening Day.
Warm regards,
Jason Walker, Greens Committee Chairman

Tee-rific Golf Tip Of The Month
GOLF SHOP
James ”Cheech” Shukdinas, PGA Assistant Golf Professional
Is The Driver Swing the same as the Iron Swing?
During lessons, we get asked this question often. The answer is both “Yes” and “No”. The answer is “Yes” in that both swings go around an imaginary arc. And we ideally want to hit the center of the clubface with each club. The difference comes in the attack angle.
When we hit our irons, especially our shorter irons, we want to have a descending angle of attack on the golf ball. With the driver, we want an ascending angle of attack. We want this for two reasons. One, the ball is up in the air on a tee. If we try to hit down too much on a ball on a tee, it’ll pop right into the air and go nowhere! The second reason is so we can reduce spin, which will make a golf ball go further.
Here’s an example of why we want to reduce spin. If two golfers are both swinging their driver at 100MPH, but one has a SPIN RATE of 2,000 rpm’s, and the other has a spin rate of 3,000 rpm’s, the first golfer will be hitting by his partner all day long. Angle of attack affects SPIN Rate.
So here is where the swings differ. With the driver, we want to have more “side bend” with our spine at impact to get the ascending angle. With our irons we have some “side bend”, but with the driver we want more! To get this feeling, simply stand up straight facing a mirror. Now, bend your spine to the right (left-handed golfers bend to the left), that’s SIDE BEND. When it comes to differences between the two clubs, this movement is the key.
See you on the greens!

Chef’s Corner
BEET AND RICOTTA HUMMUS
Chef J. Kelly Morrow
If you’re looking for a healthy and tasty vibrant appetizer for your next gathering, Chef Kelly recommends giving this one a try.
INGREDIENTS:
1 baseball-sized red beet (about 6 ounces), scrubbed
1 15.5-ounce can chickpeas, rinsed, drained
1/3 cup tahini, well mixed
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup ricotta
1 garlic clove, finely grated or smashed to a paste with flat side of knife on cutting board
1 teaspoon (or more) kosher salt
2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
Suggested garnishes ~ Mint leaves or basil leaves, poppy or sesame seeds, and olive oil drizzle
PREPARATION:
Step 1
Preheat oven to 425°. Wrap beet tightly in foil and place on a foil-lined rimmed baking sheet. Roast until the tines of a fork slide easily into the center of beet, 60–70 minutes. Let sit until cool enough to handle.
Step 2
Meanwhile, process chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, ricotta, garlic, salt, pepper, and coriander in a food processor until smooth.
Step 3
Using a paper towel, rub beet to remove skin (it should slip off easily and any staining to your hands will be temporary). Trim root end and cut beet into 8 pieces; add to food processor. Process until mixture is smooth, about 2 minutes. Taste and season with salt, if needed.
Step 4
Transfer hummus to a shallow bowl. Top with garnishes and drizzle with oil. Prep a day ahead. Hummus can be made 4 days ahead. Hold in an airtight container.
Makes about 2¼ cups. Best with toasted pita or baguette crostini for dipping.
