WELCOME 2023

THE ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE

On behalf of the Entertainment Committee, I want to wish the Tavistock family a very happy and healthy New Year. We hope you enjoyed your holidays with family and friends. 2023 promises to be an exciting year for our Club as we all eagerly await the completion of the renovations. In the meantime, the Entertainment Committee has a few events planned to help us through the quiet winter months.

On Wednesday, January 11th, join us for a Beer Dinner, featuring the handcrafted beers of Mechanical Brewery in Cherry Hill, along with a menu designed to compliment the beers planned by Chef Kelly. In 2021, Mechanical Brewery won a Gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival for their English-style pale mild ale. The festivities begin at 6:30 PM with a cost of $60 (all inclusive). Make your reservations early as this event will surely sell out, especially with our limited space.

Trivia Night returns in 2023! On Wednesday, January 18th, we’ll host the 1st Trivia Night of 2023. So gather your trivia group of up to 8 per team, get your reservation in early, and prepare to match

wits against other Tavistock groups in the quest for Trivia Champs.

On Saturday, February 4th, the Entertainment Committee is hosting its first ever Après Ski Lodge on the Club grounds. Heated tents, furry blankets, out-door fire pits, music, light bites, Martini bar, Bubbly bar, hot chocolate bar and other accoutrements will make you believe you’re in Vail, Colorado. This adults only event begins at 5:00 PM, with acoustic music until 7:00 PM, then a DJ from 7:00 – 9:00 PM, with a cost of $50++ per person. Don’t forget to make your reservations early; you’ll definitely want to be inside the heated tent in February!

Join us for another Trivia Night on Wednesday, February 22nd. A great indoor fun activity. We hope to see you there.

Finally, watch your Tavizine and the Tavistock News for updates on all events. Be sure to stop by for brunch on Sunday and enjoy the addition of live music, appearing several times a month. Welcome 2023. On behalf of the Entertainment Committee, we thank you for your support of the events. As always, if you have any suggestions, we would love to hear from you.

To make a reservation for any of these events, call 856.429.1866

Women’s Golf Holiday Party

WOMEN’S 9 & 18 HOLE GROUP Richelle Maestro

The Tavistock Women’s Golf Association hosted its annual holiday party on December 7th. The Club was beautifully decorated for the holiday season and a buffet of delicious hors d’oeuvres and sweets was enjoyed by all. There was a putting contest and door prizes were awarded. The festive event was planned by Ellen Richey-Porter, Susan Hodges, and Elizabeth Wallace. Special thanks go out to Pat Butkus and Christian Simms for joining in on the fun and to the banquet staff for their impeccable service. It was a wonderful kick off to the holiday season!

GOLF DEPARTMENT

Happy New Year!

It’s hard to believe we are wrapping up yet another golf season at Tavistock Country Club. We had an action-packed year with plenty to look forward to in 2023. In the bullet points below, you will see some of the fun facts of the 2022 golf season.

Thank you for a great year and all the best in 2023!

• 26,000 rounds of golf recorded

• Over 50,000 golf tees used

• 100+ scored golf events completed

• Over 200 match play rounds completed

• 10 Hole in Ones

• Over 50,000 miles of golf cart miles driven

• 12,000 + golf balls purchased from the golf shop

• 468,000 putts holed out (this number is probably closer to 300,000 because no one holes out all the time)

• 125 sets of clubs re-gripped

• Approximately 125,000 golf balls hit in the training room

GREENS COMMITTEE

Dear Members,

As the golf season comes to a close, I hope you all have been able to take advantage of some of the great fall days we have had. I would like to provide an update from the Green Committee on a number of items, specifically the scheduled priorities for this winter with our Superintendent Vic Frederico, and the announcement of a new consulting golf course architect for Tavistock. Before getting to that, I would like to thank Vic and his staff for another season of exceptional playing conditions! Despite weather challenges, labor shortages, and supply issues, the course was as nice as any in the area. Time and again I heard from members and guests how great the course was. In fact, many said it was the nicest conditions of anywhere they played.

In the past the Green staff have typically taken on one large project over the winter. The tree removal between 6 and 14 was the most recent, with other areas in years past. Along with drainage, tree management on our property is one of the highest priorities for the Green Committee. At this point, there’s no question our tree management program is paying dividends. With more sunlight and airflow, our turf is firmer and

dryer than ever, leading to less days closed after significant rain events. By far, most of the trees we have removed have been inferior species trees, and in many areas removing them has allowed for some of our specimen trees to flourish. For this winter, Vic and his staff are turning their attention to enhancement of the property. Tree trimming and pruning, clearing overgrowth, and cleaning out our many creeks and ditches will be the focus. The course remains in exceptional winter condition, and we ask that you continue to take care of the course by fixing ball marks and filling divots.

I also have exciting news to share with you. Earlier this year a sub-committee was formed to initiate a process to interview golf course architects to develop a new master plan. I would like to thank the following members for their time and input in this very important aspect of the Club. Steve Bender, Adam Bracy, Patrick Butkus, Liza Cartmell, Matthew Duncan, Vic Frederico, Tom Hutchinson, Colin Mack-Allen, Bill McGuinness, Jamie Slonis, John Suender and Anthony Van Dervort.

It had been nearly 20 years since the last master plan was developed and the Green Committee and Vic felt strongly it was time to begin the process again. Our course has changed dramatically in those 20 years as has the game of golf. In addition, there are a number of functional items that need updating such as drainage, irrigation, bunkers, greens, available pin placements and green surrounds. For clarity, this is a plan for the future and will help guide the Club for the next 10 plus years. Unlike in the past, this is not intended to be a plan to close the course and make major changes, although we will likely continue to close a few holes each winter to do work as we have done the last several years. After a lengthy and thorough process that included developing a formal RFP, soliciting responses from six architecture firms including our current architect, receiving and reviewing four proposals, and narrowing our candidates to three, I’m excited to announce that the committee unanimously decided on Jaeger Kovich and his firm Proper Golf!

TAVISTOCK COUNTRY CLUB IS DEDICATED TO CREATING A FIRST - 4
A Letter From The Greens Committee THE

The committee was impressed by his background, his ideas, and his enthusiasm for the opportunity to work with Tavistock. He has extensive experience with two of the leading golf architects of this generation, Tom Doak and Gil Hanse, and established himself with his own firm eight years ago. I encourage you all to check out his website, www.propergolf.com, to learn more about him, but here are a few highlights of his background:

• Founded Proper Golf in 2014

• 13 years in golf construction and architecture.

• Consulting and Master Plan work focused on historic Met, GAP and Massachusetts Areas and maximizing the potential of some other up and coming clubs.

• Eight years working for Tom Doak at Renaissance Golf Design and Gil Hanse. Shaping, running projects, on-site work.

• Recommended by Tom Doak for first solo Master Plan in 2014, slowly compiled a list of clients while working for Gil Hanse between 2014-2019.

• Became the “Restoration Point Man” for Gil Hanse thanks to a very successful restoration project at Ridgewood (NJ), which led to Aronimink (PA), The Creek (NY) and others.

Over the next 8-10 months Jaeger will be spending a significant amount of time at the Club developing his plan. In fact, you may have already seen him out on the course with his large sketch pad and flying his drone taking pictures. We will keep you all posted on the progress of his plan with the expectation it will be complete sometime this summer. Lastly, I would like to recognize and thank Jim Nagle and Forse Design for their many contributions to Tavistock over the years. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions and I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

Course Care Reminders

GREENS DEPARTMENT

Over the past few weeks, we have prepared the golf course for winter play, and here are a few reminders for the course over the next few months. All of the course accessories, including all of the tee markers, have been removed for winter refurbishing. Please tee off from different spots of your choice over the next few months! Most of the men’s (yellow tee marker) par 3 tees, as well as a few select black tees, will be covered for the winter to help with recovery. We started this practice a few years back, and it helped our areas with the most divots a lot going into the golfing season. Please use this as an opportunity to tee off from a teeing area that you would not normally use. It’s a great opportunity to see the course from a different perspective! We have also added two separate pin locations to each green, as per our normal practice for the winter. Please keep in mind that there WILL BE NO EZLOCATOR PIN SHEETS through the winter. We will start the daily pin sheets at the beginning of the golfing season, most likely around April 1st of 2022. Also, please rotate the flag to the other hole on each green after your play. Rotating the flag will help disperse the wear and traffic on the greens throughout the winter. Finally, periodically throughout the winter we will utilize temporary pins on a few of the greens, or all the greens depending on the circumstances. During the freeze and thaw cycle, it is sometimes necessary to close a green, so we do not hurt the root zone of our greens.

PLEASE DO NO WALK ON A GREEN WHEN IT IS CLOSED!

When walking to the next holes tee, from a temporary green it is VERY important that you walk around the green. Thanks for following all our winter rules....and please do not forget to fix your ball marks throughout.
