With the end of term rapidly approaching we are busy with assessment, report writing, camps and trips. Your teacher should be able to tell you how much progress you have made in Reading, Writing and Maths for Year Sevens over this year, for Year Eight students, over the two years from entrance to exit. Once you have the individual data on progress for your child we then collate it for the class, syndicate, Year 7, Year 8, Boys, Girls, Maori, Pasifika and so on so that we have a comprehensive picture of achievement. FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVERS WIN NEW ZEALAND NATIONALS

During the year Totara students have been learning lots about the topics that FPS (Future Problem Solving) NZ gave us. The future problem solving process is a process that involves giving the students a future scene that has an issue related to a global issue and that is currently happening around the world. The Nationals topic for the future scene was about Trade Barriers, this was a complicated topic to understand, a good example is what happened between Australia and New Zealand over the apple exports to Australia. Australia put in place barriers to restrict imports of New Zealand apples. The future scene at the National competition was about a futuristic car New Zealand had manufactured and America had put in place barriers to stop the import of these cars. They had to come up with challenges, an underlying problem, solutions that could solve the underlying problem, then develop the action plan. All in a two hour exam setting. Briarley Smith, Dael Summerhays-Sunnex, Reeve Smith and Danielle Sigley, this group was chosen to compete at the National Competition in Auckland after producing a booklet that qualified from the term 3 topic on Human Rights. The girls studied hard leading up to the National competition and their efforts were recognised when they won the first prize at National competition. The girls have been invited to attend the Internationals in Bloomington, Indiana June 2013. Well done girls!!!!!

NZ CUP CRICKET TEAM CO N

GR AT UL AT

ION

S!!!

Tauranga Intermediate has earned the right to defend the New Zealand Cup title they won last year when they defeated Rosmini College in the Northern Regional final in Auckland on Monday. The New Zealand Cup, which started life as the Milo Cup is a NZ Cricket National primary school competition, where four regional winners from throughout the country battle for the title of National primary school cricket champion. On an overcast morning at Cornwall Park in Auckland, the Tauranga Intermediate representatives lost the toss and were asked to bat by Rosmini College. The Auckland team bowlers grabbed the early ascendancy and had the Western Bay side in trouble at two wickets down for just 9 runs. The arrival of Mikaere Leef Rm 1(26) and Taylor Kite Rm 36 (29) at the wicket got the Tauranga side back into the match. Batting down the order Oliver Norris Rm 41 took to the bowling with real enthusiasm to smash 28 runs, which saw his side through to 109. Tauranga bowler Finn Sears Rm 15 took two early wickets, before Oakley Dench Rm 20, Taylor Kite, David Rout Rm 20 and Mikaere Leef all slowed the opposition momentum with the ball. Coupled with some outstanding fielding, the defending champions booked a second successive National Finals berth, when they removed Rosmini College for 95. The Tauranga coaching team of Aubrey Jeftha and Brett Hampton were extremely proud of the performances of their team. At last year始s National Finals, Tauranga Intermediate defeated South Island representative Ellesmere College and Inglewood Primary from Taranaki in the preliminary competition, before meeting Heaton Intermediate (Christchurch) in the title decider on day two. Tauranga cruised to victory after dismissing their opponents for 74, with the Bay of Plenty side getting home for victory for the loss of just two wickets. The 2012 New Zealand Cup National Finals are to be played in Palmerston North on November 28 and 29.
