THE 2015 TAT200

The 2015 TAT200 was once again a great success with over 170 riders participating in the 100 and 200km ride. There were more than 400 participants over all competing the both the bike rides and the walks.

Thankfully, the day was not as hot as last year although it did become quite windy which didn’t really bother the walkers but made conditions quite tough for the cyclists. $140,000 was raised thanks to all of our generous sponsors although it is yet to be determined where this money will be distributed in our local community. This will be announced on the Tat200 website once it is finalised.

Sponsors from as far away as Brisbane and Sydney made the trip for the day and their support is greatly appreciated.

An event as large as this cannot run smoothly without the help of a large group of volunteers, therefore we would like to extend our thanks to the fifty volunteers who gave up their time to help make this event so successful.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

I was accompanying Agnes to a medical check-up, more for moral support than anything, and as we drove along the highway I noticed a white car stopped at a side road ahead of us, waiting to pull out onto the highway.

The car waited until we had almost reached it and then decided to pull out directly in front of us causing me to stamp heavily on the brakes. “What an idiot!” I growled. Poor old Agnes went white in the face as we barely avoided a collision. “Couldn’t they see my car?”

To make matters worse, even though the speed limit was 100km per hour, this driver now drove along in front of us at 80km. The persistent oncoming traffic made it impossible to pass him or her safely. The cars behind us began to bank up and we soon had a long convoy of impatient drivers all dawdling along the highway at 80km an hour.

“If the driver behind us gets any closer he’ll be sitting in the back seat,” I grumbled at Agnes and she immediately peered over her shoulder to check out the tailgater. “Shoving his car up my tailpipe won’t make me go any faster,” I muttered.

“Well at least the speed limit changes to 80km per hour just up ahead,” Agnes said soothingly. “So we should soon be back to a decent speed.”

However, as we passed the 80km sign, the driver in front inexplicably dropped down to 60km.

“Really?” I shouted with frustration at this stupid driver. “So now your car can’t do 80 anymore?” I turned and bellowed at poor old Agnes.

“Why would he do this? I know he can drive at 80km because he was just doing it.”

“I don’t think he can hear you Merle,” replied Agnes softly, trying to calm me down. “Think of your blood pressure.”

“Well the driver is clearly an idiot,” I replied angrily. “He shouldn’t be allowed on the road.”

As we approached the built up area, the speed limit dropped down to 60, so naturally the driver in the white car reduced his speed to 40. After plodding along for what seemed an eternity, we eventually slowed down for the traffic lights and I pulled into the inside lane so I could glare fiercely at the person driving the white car. Unfortunately, the tinting on the windows was so dark I couldn’t see the driver. “Well those windows are clearly illegal,” I pointed out to Agnes. “Look at how dark they are.

I can’t see who is behind the wheel.”

“There are so many stupid drivers nowadays,” agreed Agnes. “This one

is clearly unaware of the trouble he’s causing.”

“I really feel like waving my fist at him but with road rage such a common occurrence these days, who knows what could happen to us Agnes. I want to know why the police don’t target these slow-coaches instead of fining decent drivers like us for doing a couple of kilometres over the speed limit,” I grumbled.

Agnes decided to be voice of reason. “Well he’s gone now so let’s just relax and forget about him.”

However, due to the vagaries of traffic, we soon found ourselves stuck behind a car trying to reverse into a tight parking space without much success. “I’m not sure things could get any worse,” I complained.

“Yes they can,” replied Agnes as she pointed at the white car slowly passing us in the right hand lane. “There’s simply no road justice for us today.”

The driver in front of us finally gave up and moved on allowing us to get going again and as we drove onto the causeway, I noticed that our nemesis in the white car was still sitting in the right hand lane doing his sensible sixty kilometres an hour. To make matters even worse, he had found a kindred spirit in the left lane, and together, oblivious to the traffic behind them, they drove side by side, all the way into town followed by an ever increasing multitude of very frustrated and annoyed drivers.

“I’m sure people like that boast that they’ve never had an accident,” I said to Agnes as I fumed at the snail pace we were forced to drive at.

“Mind you, you have to wonder at how many they’ve actually caused.”

Agnes nodded sympathetically. “Well, I’m going to need a strong coffee and most definitely some cheesecake to settle my nerves for the return journey because with our luck, that silly driver will probably be in front of us on the way home as well. Imagine how awful would that be!”

“Now Agnes, don’t tempt fate by saying such a thing. What I can’t understand is why somebody who is comfortable driving at 80kmph on the highway has to slow down to 60 when they reach an 80km zone? It doesn’t make any sense. And while I’m at it, indicators are supposed to be used before you start turning, not half way through the turn. If you’ve already started turning, there’s not much point indicating is there? Why do people do these things Agnes? Can you please explain this to me?

PUPPY PRE-SCHOOL CLASSES

Puppy Pre-School Classes are now being run by the Tatura Veterinary Clinic. So why should your puppy attend? Let's start at the very beginning.

As with any new addition to the home, introducing a puppy is full of excitement and trepidation. Loveable, boisterous and full of mischief, puppies love to engage and explore often beyond acceptable boundaries.

Nevertheless, there are a wide range of challenges that can affect their behaviours and home environment including the way puppies interact with new situations and other dogs from outside the litter.

Having a new puppy can raise a lot of questions: Where should puppy sleep? When and what should puppy eat? When is biting, too much biting? Is it ok to leave puppy home alone? When should puppy start toilet training? Should puppy be left alone in the back yard? Is my home and garden safe? What toys are ok and safe for puppy?

For any breed of puppy, exposing them to a world of new experiences, sights and sounds is crucial. This includes introducing them to the important process of socialisation, coping with distractions and learning to focus on the basic commands and desired behaviours that shapes them for life.

This is where Puppy Pre-School Classes provides canine owners and their puppies aged from 8 to 16 weeks, a perfect opportunity to pick up a wealth of knowledge and counter potential traits from developing, all within a hygienically safe and fun-filled environment.

"Dogs that are not sufficiently socialised during their formative stages of their development are more likely to develop destructive behaviours and characteristics later in life such as fear, territorial issues, anxiety and aggression," said Averil Coe, DogTech's qualified behavioural specialist who conducts three weekly, one-hour classes at the Tatura Veterinary Clinic.

With over seven years’ experience in running puppy schools, group classes and in-home behavioural training sessions, Averil also establishes the basic skills that creates the foundations for later learning during the puppy's transition into adulthood.

“This is where Puppy Pre-School Classes are important for owners as it gives them a chance to learn about the puppy’s needs during this impressionable time including problem behaviour prevention and normal dog behaviours, all in a positive and enjoyable way," continued Averil.

SANTA’S LIST by John Kriesfeld Before you begin this story, I have to make a pre-emptive, somewhat sincere apology to appease the ‘politically correct’ brigade, those people who are only too happy to be offended on behalf of others. This apology will hopefully prevent these ‘do-gooders’ from marching up and down Hogan Street and picketing our office. During the latter stage of this story, I mock one of the less fortunate, minority groups in our society, so let me just say to the members of that group, and you will know who you are, “If you lack a sense of humour, I’m sorry.”

The little boy clung nervously to his mother’s hand as they waited patiently to see Santa. As they edged slowly closer to the front of the line, the little boy watched as the children in front of him climbed happily onto Santa’s knee and excitedly told him what they expected to receive for Christmas. When his turn finally arrived, one of Santa’s elves solemnly escorted him into Santa’s grotto and helped him climb onto the jolly man’s knee.

“This is the last one for the day Santa,” whispered the elf, who then hovered nearby in case the situation turned nasty and the child became agitated and aggressive. Although such cases were rare, it had been known to happen.

“Very good,” beamed Santa as he forced a smile. It had been a long day. “Ho, ho, ho, and what’s your name my boy?” he asked cheerfully.

The child looked up at him, a picture of innocence. “I thought you knew the names of all the boys and girls.”

Santa sighed. “I do keep a list of all the boys and girls to let me know if they’ve been good or bad but I left it at the North Pole. Have you been a good boy? Will you be on my good list?”

The boy shrugged. “I try to be good but sometimes I do things and mum yells at me and tells me I’ve been naughty so I’m not sure what list I’m on.”

“As long as you try to be good, that’s all that

matters so if you tell me your name I’ll check the list, just to make sure, when I return the North Pole.”

“It’s Charlie,” replied the boy.

Okay Charlie,” said Santa as he waited for an opportunity to burst forth with another, “Ho, ho, ho.” A clause in his Santa contract stipulated that each child had to receive a minimum of two, “Ho, ho, ho’s” in order to ensure that they received the full Santa Clause experience. “Tell me what you want for Christmas.”

“Didn’t you get my letter?” asked Charlie. “I sent it a while ago.”

“I receive millions of letters Charlie. Why don’t you remind me about what you asked for in your letter?”

Charlie thought for a moment. “I asked for a train set for me, a pony for my sister and I also asked for world peace.”

Santa smiled approvingly. “I see what you’ve done there Charlie. That’s quite clever for somebody your age.”

Charlie looked at Santa reproachfully. “Well, you didn’t bring me anything that I asked for last year so I thought I’d try a different approach this year. I figured that as long as I got what I wanted, it didn’t matter if other people got stuff as well and I thought being generous might help my case.”

“I’ll see what I can do but that’s going to be tricky, especially world peace,” said Santa.

“That’s okay. I’m not sure what world peace means but I’ve heard them talk about it on TV. But that’s not why I’m here,” explained Charlie. “I came to see you because I want to change my list.”

“You do?” said Santa.

“Yes,” replied Charlie. “I’ve decided that it’s more important for my mum and dad to be happy so I want you to help with that instead.”

“They’re not happy at the moment?” asked Santa.

Charlie shook his head. “No. My mum cries a lot and my dad comes home from work and goes into his shed out the back and I don’t

ever see him. It’s been the same every year for as long as I’ve known. They’re not too bad during winter but once spring comes they just get very sad.”

“Do you know what’s making them sad?” asked Santa.

“Yes,” replied Charlie, “and I want you to fix it. I want them to be happy again.”

Santa glanced at the elf who merely rolled her eyes. “So what do you want me to do?” asked Santa.

Charlie leaned back and whispered in Santa’s ear before leaning forward again. “Can you do it?” he asked eagerly.

Santa pursed his lips thoughtfully. “I don’t know Charlie. You’re asking a lot there. I think you’ve got a better chance sticking with world peace.”

“Please?” begged Charlie, his tiny face screwed up as if in pain.

“Okay, I’ll do my best but I’m not promising anything,” replied Santa.

“Thanks Santa,” said Charlie excitedly as he climbed down from Santa’s knee, “and if you want to throw in the train set I won’t mind.”

“Ho, ho, ho,” laughed Santa.

The elf waited until the boy had returned to his mother then turned to Santa. “What was that all about?”

“You’re never going to believe this. He wanted me to help Richmond win a finals game in order to make his parents happy. Not the premiership, just a finals game.”

The elf smiled. “It’s a noble gesture but it probably won’t happen in his life time and as each year passes he’ll blame you.”

Santa shrugged. “It goes with the territory I suppose.”

“It’s all relative but these people don’t know the meaning of real suffering,” said the elf.

Santa nodded. “You’re right. I think to understand that, you have to be a Carlton supporter.”

“Amen to that,” replied the elf.

MELBOURNE CUP DAY AT HILL TOP Once again Hill Top hosted its yearly Cup Day event which was very well attended and a fun time was had by all. The event is run by the lady golfers of Hill Top and is their biggest fund raising event of the year, with the money going back into the club. Some of the purchases have been a defribulator, ice machine and sails over the BBQ area. Many sweeps were run with lots of winners. Links Bistro served a lovely meal to top off the day.

There were prizes for the Best Dressed Couple, Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Gent.

The main raffle, a Webber Baby Q, was won by Elaine Cowley. Second prize, a Russell Hobbs Heritage four slice toaster and matching kettle, was won by Marily Clavell, third prize, a Russell Hobbs Slow Cooker was won by Marg Caldow and Maria Warner won the fourth prize, a Russell Hobbs mini whiz. Peter Caldow was the auctioneer for the Hamper which sold to Lyn and John Fanning for $75.

The Hill Top bowlers were also out in full force supporting the event due to no games being played for a couple of weeks. Thank you to all who came along to make Cup Day such a success.

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE Tatura Fire Brigade is gearing up for what potentially could be a season of very high grass and bushfire risk.

The Brigade has already been called out to several grassfires in the local area, some due to re-ignition of earlier burns. Landowners are urged to check all recent burn-offs for hotspots prior to the hotter weather.

Please be aware of fire restrictions in your area. The CFA introduced the Fire Danger Period for this area effective from October 26.

CFA advise that burning off grass, vegetation and other specified fuels can now only be undertaken under strict conditions relating to provision of manpower resources, water supply, fire breaks and fire fighting equipment.

Permits can only be issued by the Municipal Fire Prevention officer or, in some cases, CFA, and the period for permit burns will be for a limited period only prior due to increased fire risk as the summer season intensifies.

FINDING SANTA

Arthur knew why he was an old grump. He’d just been woken from his afternoon nap on the couch, disturbed as usual by some hoon screaming down his street like a Bathurst Bruiser. He swore at the fading rumble as he sat up, his left leg starting to cramp. He grumbled at that too, moving as quickly as he could to stand, easing the tightness. “You need more exercise,” he heard Marg say again.

“You need to get out, do some walking. Do you good. Stop all that complaining.”

Secretly he agreed with her. She’d been visiting for what? About two years now was it?

He wondered now and then why; him on his own and she being a widow living the same, the other side of town. Him being past it and she with her fussy ways. She called him an old grump but always with a grin that tangled him in knots, an exchange he encouraged with every visit.

His reflection stared back at him from the bathroom mirror, his wild beard long since replacing what had gone from on top. This ancient white-haired image, he mused, did not agree with him. He was, he thought, reluctantly in tune with life; an expected event that was now his old age. He shrugged, his reflection shrugging back. He was meant to look like this. He suddenly had an impulse to cut it all off; about the same time as he heard the soft knock on his front door. Dropping the scissors he shuffled to answer it.

He looked down at an upturned girly face of freckles. “Please mister, would we be able to get our ball?” Before he could answer, the freckled face smothered a grin behind grubby hands. “You look like Father Christmas, you know that?” she said, giggling.

He decided there and then he didn’t like her.

“What is it you said you wanted? I’m busy,” he barked.

“Our ball. please? It’s in your back yard.”

“You’ll have to come through, go out the back,” Arthur mumbled, pointing the way.

A girl of about eight, Arthur thought and a little lad following marched passed him: a shamble of a child who seemed to Arthur to be no more than a pilot fish forever in company with its large protector, his big sister. She introduced herself saying she was from next door, her name was Beth and her little brother James was the one who hit the ball over the fence.

Arthur began to wonder why he’d invited them in as they hovered around his kitchen table, awkward and untidy, filling his private space.

“Are you really Father Christmas?” James asked. His sister gave him an elbow jab.

They both stared at Arthur, the boy rubbing his stomach.

“Ball must be in the garden. Go and look,” Arthur said, feeling a large grump coming.

Beth explained how they came to be living next door as she watched her little brother almost disappear in a confusion of bushes and long grass. “We had to move because dad was always angry and James cried a lot,” she said. “That’s why mom came here.” Her voice faded. “James thinks Father Christmas won’t be able to find him, not here anyways, but we’ll be going home soon.”

Arthur nodded, not sure what to say. Instead, he found himself apologising for the state of his garden. He’d been a bit down lately, didn’t have the energy. All of which went over the head of his young visitor.

James rushed to the back door, a tennis ball in his hand. “I’ve found it!” He beamed, quickly joining his sister.

When they left, Arthur made himself a cup of tea. He couldn’t remember the last time anyone

except Marg had been in his house. His garden was overgrown, sure and that bothered Marg.

“It happens every spring,” he told her. “You’ll get used to it.”

He sat in an outdoor chair sipping tea, the memory of his young visitors fresh in his mind; the search for the ball, the joy of discovery and their family story. He found an old thought. A Christmas long ago with him in his red suit and false fat belly, laughing and playing his part in it all, a distant time when children’s faces held excitement, captured forever in glittering tinsel.

He stroked his beard, Beth’s words repeating, ‘You look like Father Christmas, you know that?’ Maybe he was?

Next day he told Marg about the visit as she sat at his kitchen table, head down scribbling.

Arthur couldn’t understand why she chose to write out her Christmas cards at his place; cards she would soon be handing out as she met this one or that. “They sound like lovely children,” was all she said. He watched as she placed a card in an envelope and handed it to him. “Merry Christmas.”

Arthur nodded opening it, feeling awkward.

“How long before Christmas?” he asked.

“Four more shopping days,” Marg said, filling another envelope.

It was like last year repeated. Come Christmas day, Marg would visit her aged mother while Arthur would have a quiet sandwich and a beer. Boxing Day would see them share leftovers.

“I need to go Christmas shopping,” Arthur said. “Want to come?”

Marg looked surprised. “Shopping? What for?”

“Toys,” Arthur said, “children’s toys.”

CRIME PREVENTION DURING HOLIDAYS That wonderful time of the year, summer holidays, is on us once again.

Many Tatura residents will lock the front door and head away visiting friends, family or getting away for a holiday. The holiday season should be a time to relax and celebrate with family and friends. However, before we turn our back on our front door for any period of time, let’s consider how we can keep our home and community safe. Burglars will target homes if they think nobody is home. The key is to make it APPEAR that someone is home. It also relies on the sense of community; looking out for your neighbours. A trusted neighbour is someone to be treasured!

Work through this checklist and help keep your home secure while away on holidays.

• For extended absences; is it possible to have a house–sitter look after your home?

• Put a stop on your mail or ensure it is collected regularly. Ensure junk mail is removed.

• Suspend newspaper subscriptions.

• Arrange for your neighbour use your bins and put them out and in EVERY week.

• Encourage a neighbour to park their vehicle in your driveway or carport.

• Also encourage the neighbour to utilise your clothesline and even the backyard!

• Arrange for lawns and garden to be maintained.

• Turn down telephone volume so burglars cannot hear it ringing.

• Setup a lamp and radio to operate regularly on a timer.

• Be careful with posting holiday plans on social media. You may be advertising that your home is vacant.

• Ensure window locks and door deadlocks are utilised.

• Put away all tools, garden implements and bikes in shed and LOCK. • For extended absences download www.police.vic.gov.au and submit an Absence from Residence form to the Tatura Police Station.

CAR BOOT SALE ALMOST WASHED OUT BUT STILL A SUCCESS The Murchison Anglican Church held their annual Car Boot Sale last month. With the idea originated by Marj Sessions, the Church Guild has carried it out for the past nine years, with each successive year bigger and better than the last. The Church group ran a sausage sizzle, cake stall and white elephant stall and the other thirty stalls were run by various individuals at a low cost of $10 each. Unfortunately the proceedings were somewhat curtailed by the rain plus the fact that a local identity was buried that day. Nevertheless, the church community was quite happy with the amount raised. As many of the stall holders continue to return each year, they are obviously happy with their outcomes as well.

This annual event and the 5th Sunday lunches they run in conjunction with their sister church, St. Pauls at Rushworth, are the two main fundraisers for the year, so it is good to see it doing so well.

TATURA COMMUNITY PLAN

The Tatura Community Plan 5 year review was endorsed at the October Council meeting, held at the Ballantyne centre in Tatura. The endorsement of the plan concludes the review process, and now the Committee will work towards implementing actions identified in the Plan. A number of key activities were identified and plans are underway to progress the following activities.

Transport: The community requires clearer understanding of current transport services and the Community Plan will facilitate a forum to discuss transport challenges and opportunities in February 2016.

Youth: We need a representative for Tatura on the Ramp It Up Committee.

This will enable Tatura to access funding and events to better service our youth.

Swimming Pool: Remember to support the activities at the Swimming Pool this summer. Activities in the Park can be found at www.getmoovingshepparton.com.au or come along to the Friday night Community BBQ’s. If your community organisation would like to host a Friday night BBQ contact the Tatura Community House to find out more.

Business: The Community Plan committee will be working on promoting businesses in Tatura in early 2016, so if you are a business owner or a shopper and have some ideas please let us know!

Newcomers Sessions: Have already started to welcome new residents to town and share information about our town.

Lake Barlett: A funding application has been submitted to construct a walking track at the southern end of Lake Bartlett.

SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS

“So this is Christmas and what have you done, another year over, and a new one has begun.”

So sings the late John Lennon in his famous song, “Happy Christmas, (War is Over)”, but who is actually feeling happy about this occasion?

If you’re somewhere between two and ten years old, the confusion and fear starts to mount when you hear the words “and what have you done?”

It sends chills down your spine as your mind goes racing back over the year trying to remember those misdemeanours you may have committed and from about October on, you are constantly reminded that if you are not good, “Santa won’t come to you”. And that’s just your parents who can’t be trusted to get the facts right anyway, although you feel there must be some truth in it because you hear it over and over again. Even at the Lions Christmas Carols, they are singing, “You’d better watch out, you better not pout, you better not cry cos I’ tellin you why,” that fella Santa Claus seems to know everything. Even when you’re asleep you’re not safe because he knows when you’ve been bad or good, so what hope have you got? You simply try to keep your head down and not do anything controversial, saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ all the time in order to cancel out your previous misdemeanours.

Then there’s your Mum and Dad. Are they totally happy? Perhaps not because Santa’s fees go up every year with inflation and finding the necessary money out of their tight budget to finance this little endeavour is not an easy thing to do. However, they are happy about this control they now have over their six year-old who has been running riot all year.

The little terror suddenly remembers his manners and you can even dish up Brussels sprouts for those couple of months without the walls getting splattered and even receive a polite thank you. It’s probably worth the extra money to get a couple of month’s peace and so what if it takes half of the next year to pay off the credit card.

But who is the happiest of all? Well it’s Grandpa of course. Christmas day is no longer the stressful grind it used to be. Seeing the hive of activity in the kitchen around Christmas lunch time, Grandpa sits there and querulously asks, “Can I do something?” Of course he knows the answer will be, “No thanks Grandpa, you just take it easy. Would you like another stubby? Half way through the fourth stubby, the call goes out, “Lunch is ready Grandpa, sit down and hop in. Would you like some more oysters?” Then when everyone has gorged their fill, Grandpa says in a tired voice, “Can I help with the dishes?” Of course the answer is, “No Grandpa, you toddle off and have a nap. We can take care of this.”

So being a good Grandpa, he trots off and has a nap, dreaming about the good old days when he had to do all this.

That six year old I had to threaten with no Santa, has just given me four pairs of underpants, a bottle of aftershave, got me half drunk, fed me up to pussy’s bow and then sent me off to bed for a nap. And so this is Christmas, and I didn’t have to do a damned thing. I must have been a very good boy this year.

It’s a sad irony that in December 1980, John Lennon was gunned down so close to that happy time of year. Christmas will never be happy for those closest to him, but the legacy of his song lives on so we can dream of a better world, and maybe he is right, the war will end some day, perhaps even one Christmas day.

ALL IN THE NAME OF LIBERTY The American Revolution, 1775 to 1783, was an indirect cause of the French Revolution, 1789 to 1799. This sounds odd doesn’t it? In 1775 the first engagements of the American Revolutionary War occurred between British troops and the Minutemen, who had been warned of the attack by Paul Revere. At the same time, France was still seething from her 1763 defeat by the British in the North American Seven Years War. France had lost her vast holdings in North America, except for New Orleans, and wanted revenge.

Following the Declaration of Independence on July 4 1776, the American Revolution was well received in France, by both the general population and the aristocracy. The Revolution was perceived as the incarnation of the ‘Enlightenment spirit’ against the English tyranny. Benjamin Franklin, dispatched to France in December 1776 to rally support, was welcomed with great enthusiasm.

At first France, under King Louis XVI, was reluctant to officially enter the War because French finances had been seriously depleted during the Seven Years War and they were still in the process of rebuilding their Navy and other forces. The Americans argued that an alliance of the United States, France and Spain would assure a rapid defeat of the British but France, waiting until their navy was rebuilt, hesitated. Finally, on July 23, 1777, Foreign Minister Vergennes decided that it was time to offer either total assistance or abandon the new nation. The choice, ratified by the King, was war. By the time the American Revolutionary War ended in 1783, France had spent about 1.3 billion livres (13 billion US dollars in modern currency), suffered about 7,000 dead and 8,000 wounded in battle or permanently incapacitated by illness.

By this time, the ‘Enlightenment’ philosophy had truly taken hold in France, to the detriment of the church and the aristocracy. Liberté, égalité, fraternité (freedom, equality, fraternity) was the catch cry of the day.

Because of the enormous national debt incurred during the American Revolutionary War, Louis XVI forced onerous new taxes on his people that the aristocracy somehow managed to avoid.

The deregulation of the grain market under the laissez faire (let things be) philosophy of the new economists meant that many could no longer afford even the staple of bread. It was around this time that Marie Antoinette was famously credited with saying, “Let them eat cake”. A severe drought leading to famine finally toppled law and order and so the French Revolution began. Louis XVI was guillotined by his own people in January 1793, 15 years after he led France into the American Revolutionary War. His queen Marie Antoinette suffered the same fate in October of that year.

Nearly a century later the prominent political thinker Edouard Rene de Laboulave proposed that France design and construct La Liberté éclairant le monde (The Statue of Liberty) as a gift to the United States of America, saying that, “any monument raised to American independence would properly be a joint project of the French and American peoples.” The huge statue was designed by Eiffel and constructed in Paris, then disassembled and shipped to New York in crates. The dedication of “Lady Liberty” took place October 8 1886 on Liberty Island.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Tatura Primary student leaders and Principal Jane Lloyd attended the Remembrance Day service on November 11. School Captains Sarah Wilson and Kelham Tyson laid the wreath from the school.

Students and teachers enjoyed the tabloid sports day on Monday, November 9. Thank you to Mooroopna Secondary students for helping on the day to make it run easily.

LARP (Leisure and Recreation Program) is underway with students participating in a wide range of activities. Golf, fishing, ICT, tennis, basketball and lawn bowls were among the experiences offered this year.

We thank the members of the community who have volunteered their time to assist in making LARP a success.

Once again our Art classes have supported the Unilever Christmas decorations. This year students decorated plastic containers to use as ornaments.

We are pleased with the prep transition program this year and are looking forward to our Prep classes in 2016. Prep parent information night is in the school library at 7.00pm on Wednesday evening December 3. On Tuesday morning December 8, the 2016 Preps will be here for their orientation morning. The grade 6 students will be having transition at their secondary colleges.

Our school concert is on Monday December 14. This event is held outside and is enjoyed by all. The students and their teachers are busy rehearsing the songs and dance moves to celebrate the year. The Christmas raffle will be drawn at the end of the concert.

The grade 6 students will be having their graduation dinner on Thursday evening, December 18. The graduation ceremony is always a moving celebration of students’ years at Tatura Primary School. Our grade 6 students put a lot of time into their graduation speeches and it is always a proud moment for parents. We will also be saying goodbye to families who have their youngest child leaving the school.

TRANSITION TATURA Transition Tatura is again teaming up with the Sustainable Living Festival to bring sustainability ideas to Tatura. The Practical Living Trail will be held on Saturday, February 27 and you are welcome to get involved!

Stuart Mock Place will be a central point from where people can travel to other locations on The Practical Living Trail (perhaps bring your bike!).

Events at Stuart Mock Place may include: food swap, food is free (community produce), market - local produce and goods, Play in the Piazza, bike maintenance, BBQ, music, food related workshop in the Piazza, programme and maps for The Practical Living Trail.

Events on The Practical Living Trail may include: animals (chooks, bees, worms), preserving and cider making, bird nest boxes, sustainable houses, up-cycling and repurposing old objects.

This will be an exciting event for Tatura. We welcome any ideas or expertise you have in these areas so feel free to contact Ross for further information.

Transition Tatura has had another busy and successful year. Activities included roadside clean-ups along Dhurringile Rd and Tatura-Rushworth Rd, the Your Town Your Food film festival, and Play in the Piazza.

Transition have also been involved with the Tatura Energy Opportunity Study and Tatura Community Plan activities. Work is continuing on an Energy Descent Action Plan for Tatura and we are looking to implement some exciting projects in the coming year.

RURAL ART EVENT TO SHOWCASE YOUNG STREET ARTISTS On January 8, 2016, Murchison Neighbourhood House, alongside local community groups, will be holding an event showcasing young street artists around the Shepparton Region.

A number of young adults aged from 12 to 25 will have the chance to perform a live street art design, using the Murchison Pool changing room walls as a canvas. Young artists will have the opportunity to create a street art piece with the help of professional mentoring artists.

This event comes after a successful street art mural was created during an event in November 2014 by local community group SHEPP-Y-START. SHEPP-Y-START member Amy Carrick is working closely with Murchison Neighbourhood House for this project.

“After such a great response for our event at the Shepparton Star Bowl, I decided to team up with Murchison Neighbourhood House and bring a similar event to Murchison. The aim is to provide a fun, safe, and legal way for young artists across Shepparton and smaller rural towns, to participate in Street Art,” said Amy Carrick, SHEPP-Y-START member. “It’s not about promoting illegal tagging; it’s about promoting a safe way to engage in another form of art. Melbourne has done this well, with many alley ways incorporating street art as a form of positive expression. Let’s bring this to our local towns, and bring some life and

Serving Our Community

Heidi van den Ende This month’s interview is with Heidi van den Ende, who is the Nurse Unit Manager at GV Health Tatura Campus, which incorporates Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility. Located in Park Street, the Hospital comprises eight beds and provides acute hospital and Palliative Care Services.

Heidi, who has two sisters, was born and grew up in Tatura and was actually born at the Tatura Hospital where she now works. She was an Intensive Care Nurse for ten years in Darwin, which is where she met her husband, Damian, who fortunately was from Melbourne. They travelled overseas for two years and were married in London during their travels. They

also worked in the UK for a year and then in America for another year before arriving back in Victoria for a short time and then returning to Darwin where they bought their first house.

They had their first child there, a daughter who they named Finlay and after their second, a boy this time, James, they moved back to Victoria, settling in Shepparton, where Heidi worked in Emergency Nursing and Damian as a teacher. They then purchased their current house in Tatura before having their third and final child, another daughter, who they named Nikita. Finlay is now 18 years old, is doing her Year 12 exams and enjoys Tennis, James at aged 15 is in Year 10 and likes bike riding and fishing and Nikita at 13 is in Year 7 and very involved in gymnastics.

Outside of work, Heidi enjoys tennis, gardening and different forms of art/craft work. She makes different collages and has dabbled in paper toll and felting, along with anything different she comes across ‘just for fun’. She also enjoys getting together with friends and spends lots of time with one of her sisters who lives in Shepparton.

They have quite a large garden which she shares with her father who rides his bike down from Moyola Gardens to do watering, mowing, pruning and anything else needed.

Heidi says that she spends some lovely times having cups of tea with her two parents in the garden.

The family often travels to Melbourne to visit Damian's family as he is one of seven children who are all close and as his mother still lives in Lalor where he was raised, they like to see her as much as possible. Heidi has utilized many different venues available in the town over the years, such as the gymnasium, yoga and tennis but of course with a full time job and growing

family, has little time to fit more in nowadays.

She feels Tatura is a lovely community and loves living and working here.

Heidi finds her current position, which she has held for four years, a very rewarding one, working with a dedicated team of highly trained staff. She loves that she is able to give service to the community by being there for patients who come in, knowing that they get good health care and have a happy experience in the very pleasant environment.

Life at the facility is obviously not always uneventful, such as the episode with a pelican that had eaten too big a fish and being unable to fly properly hit the brick wall at the front of the building. A vet was called and the poor creature, who was very wobbly on its feet and quite ruffled, eventually vomited up the fish that was still whole and surprisingly, alive and breathing! The pelican was wrapped in a sheet and put in the horse stable at the Vet Clinic and then flew out later that day, no worse for its misadventure. On another occasion, their local cat, known as Lucky, got itself caught in a crevice of a cupboard and was unable to come out despite a copious amount of coaxing.

Eventually the fire brigade was called and once Lucky was rescued, they made sure the hole used to enter was filled in.

Heidi has been inspired by her Manager, Jayne French, who is the Director of Nursing.

Jayne, who had been in Heidi's position nine years previously, is very passionate about the hospital and has been an excellent role model.

Although my visit was a very short one, I was most impressed with the surroundings and the obviously pleasant interaction of all staff, both with each other and the patients.

SHEPPARTON ADVENTURE CLUB Our recent midweek walk was in Boho South. Dianne’s engaging promotion of this walk was rewarded with 16 people attending, one of the biggest mid week walks of the year. The walk began on the property of Ben Brook, who with his wife, has created a wonderful garden, farm and wildlife haven in the Boho hills over the last 18 years. After morning tea at the huge slab picnic table, we headed through the gate and off on our walk. Ben did not accompany us but kept an eye on our progress from his ute, offering spring water for refreshment at one point.

The first part of the walk was downhill through mature gum forest with little understory, enabling beautiful views through the trees across the gully. At the bottom we had a rest and were joined by a lively echidna that seemed very casual about our presence, poking a slender snout out to check on the new neighbours. The walk continued along overgrown bush tracks, around fallen logs and gates, and through one patch of blackberries, (which were not on Ben’s property.) The most challenging moment was the 150 metre steep climb up a bare track. This was tackled in a variety of ways, and successfully, by all.

Various fences had to be crossed and our range of methods included holding the wires apart, stepping over completely (only for the long legged) and using large tree stumps as stepping stones. Lunch was enjoyed in deep shade beside open paddocks dotted with curious cattle.

After lunch, Di lead a productive discussion on next year’s program.

We returned to the house where Ben took us on a very entertaining tour of their wonderful garden. The birch forest and the diversity of flowers and trees were almost overwhelmingly beautiful. With double the average rainfall of Shepparton, many in the group were quietly envious of the place. Ben told many stories that included birds, chooks, ferrets, butterflies, pesky motorbikes, ancient trees and the astounding productivity of the area.

After thanking Ben for his generous hospitality we headed into Violet Town for coffee and were back in Shepparton by 4.00pm.

It was announced that Tatura Milk Products plans to acquire control of Tatura Cheese Industries from Murrumbidgee Holdings Limited. Tatura’s purchase is timely as the dairy industry faces the threat of de-regulation by the Federal Government. The move will enable Tatura to place more of its milk flow into growth potential manufacture and steer away from the conventional commodity bulk products such as butter and milk powder.

Manager of Tatura Milk, Mr Neil Lowe, said that the acquisition is a logical move for his company as it effectively seals the ownership of Tatura Cheese, the natural cream cheese producer in which Tatura Milk previously held a 40% interest. ***** After almost 60 years of continuous service with the Arts and Crafts committee of the Tatura Show Society, Mrs Reta Donaldson has called it a day. Mrs Donaldson first became involved with Tatura shows in 1927 when she conducted the fruit and sweets stall. Some years ago the society recognised her long service by awarding her an honorary life membership and an inscribed silver tray. ***** The premier of Victoria, Mr John Cain, officially opened the new salinity research laboratories at the Tatura Irrigation Research Institute. The laboratory complex which includes two low energy greenhouses was built at a cost of $680,000. They have been provided to improve the facilities available to salinity research staff at Tatura in carrying out a wide range of research projects on salinity problems in the GoulburnMurray irrigation areas of northern Victoria. Tatura Research Institute was established in 1937 as the Horticultural Research Station to provide service to the horticultural industries of the Goulburn Valley. In 1976 its title was changed to Irrigation Research Institute to give recognition to the fact that research programs had broadened to include other aspects of irrigation and other industries. ***** Rodney Shire Council rates will rise by seven per cent to enable the council to adopt a 1985-86 budget of about $7.1 million for its works and services program. The Shire President, Cr John Gray, said, “Council has given responsible cognizance to the severely depressed state of the rural economy when framing its 1985-86 estimates. In light of escalating costs of Council undertakings, and with the increased demand from residents for new and improved services, I believe Council has acted with great restraint and prudence.” *****

The Tatura Lawn Tennis Club’s new $70,000 toilet block is well under way and expected to be completed by the end of the month. The toilet block is stage one of a proposed upgrading program for the club’s headquarters. At a later date it is hoped to build new clubrooms and a kitchen. The toilet block is being constructed by Mr Ken Pewtress of Tatura at a discount price because of his interest in local tennis. Since its inception 50 years ago, the club has developed into a strong body, with 120 senior members and the same number of junior members. Eleven junior teams and fourteen senior teams use the courts each weekend while five teams play mid-week. ***** The Rodney Shire’s Community Recreation Trailer was officially launched during a function at the Shire Offices. The trailer has been purchased with the assistance of an International Youth Year capital works grant of $3000. The trailer, which will be available for hire to the public, community groups, schools and service clubs, is equipped with a large portable barbecue, an auto tent, giant draught games, a tug of war rope, a parachute and an ever popular inflatable earth ball. It is hoped that the introduction of the trailer will increase opportunities for participation in recreation activities for all sectors of the community. ***** The Tatura Chamber of Commerce’s first Christmas Fair is being lauded as an outstanding success. The fair began with a free sausage sizzle breakfast and all traders reported brisk trading throughout the morning.

Threatening torrential rain held off until just after noon, when all official activities had been concluded. The fair was officially opened by Cr John Gray and Cr Andrew Crawford then presented prizes to the slogan and poster competitions, Sonia Hepworth and Prudence Willingham.

Hogan Street was closed to traffic for the fair and was a hive of activity all morning. Three performances by the ‘Convent Players’ youth group, offered shoppers a chance for an enjoyable pause, as did gumleaf playing performances by Australian champions, Wendy Eva and Fred Roberts, both from Tatura.

Girgarre East Primary School celebrated the end of the year with a barbecue and burial of a time capsule. The capsule was buried at the Cooma Recreation Reserve as part of Victoria’s 150th birthday celebrations and is to be opened in fifty years’ time. The President of the School Council, Mr Reg Poole, entertained children and adults alike before the burial, playing requests on his guitar.

HELPING PREMATURE BABIES IN DILI

Back in 2012, Vanessa Stockdale visited Timor Leste as a guest of Rotarian, Tony Favaro. She was distressed by the need she saw in the Guido Valderes National Hospital Neonate Intensive Care Unit in Dili and asked her Mother, Glenys, to “do something, to sew some of the things they need.”

Since then, Glenys and a small, but dedicated team of sewers and knitters, have made dozens of nappies, pinafores, cot sheets, beanies, booties and mittens to send over to Dili. One of the team is an 84 year old gentleman who has sewn the bulk of the nappies and cot sheets.

This year Glenys decided it would be a good idea to take some items over and see exactly what was needed. Noreen Smith thought she would also like to go. The current NICU nurse specialist, Lee Ann, wanted positioning aids, so the team got to and sewed 17 frog shaped bean bags, and 14 ‘cuddle up’ positioning aids. Thank you to Google and people who share free patterns.

Once in Dili, with 77kg of luggage, Tony alerted Glenys and Noreen about the need at two other hospitals. Items were gratefully received by one of these but contact has yet to be made with the other, Bideau Pite, because the relevant nurse is away on holidays. Lee Ann gladly received the items, especially the positioning aids, frogs, and cot sheets.

The poverty is huge in Timor Leste. There are no sheets for the hospital beds, no towels for patients and the Guido Valderes Hospital has had its budget for medication and dressings cut substantially. The other hospitals do not have any government funding, and rely solely on donations.

This is an ongoing project, so please contact Glenys Stockdale on 5824 1941 if you can help with sewing, even sewing on press studs, knitting or crocheting. Glenys can supply patterns for tiny pinafores, bootees, and beanies. These premmie babies are very small, 1 kg – 2.5kg. Donations of cotton dress fabric, cotton or bamboo quilt batting and baby yarn will also be helpful.

The AGM of the Mooroopna CWA Branch was held on October 29.

We welcomed Group President Judith Poole who presided over the election of Office bearers for 2016, with all previous office bearers being re-elected.

Congratulations to all. A lovely supper was provided at the end of proceedings and it was nice to chat to Group President Judith Poole over a ‘cuppa’.

Our branch is holding a market stall at the monthly Farmers Market at Ferrari Park on Sunday, November 15. This event is a fundraiser for us, and members have been busy sewing and cooking to showcase our local CWA. Our branch has been selected (through an Expression of Interest Application) to participate in the 2015 Charity Christmas Gift Wrapping service that is provided by the City of Greater Shepparton. We will be in Santa’s Workshop in the Maude Street Mall on December 5, 7, 8 and 9.

We are all looking forward to our Christmas break-up when, along with our families, we will take a leisurely boat ride through the Barmah Forest Wetland, and afterward have lunch at the nearby Barmah Hotel where Christmas greetings will be exchanged as we prepare to take a break from our CWA duties.

Byrneside has had several name changes during its 145 year history. It was initially known as the Junction because it was here that the Kyabram road joined the Midland Highway. It was also a thriving settlement, possessing three hotels and a store, and came close to being chosen as the site for the township of Tatura. In 1878, the name was changed to Toolamba North when a post office was opened with E.W. Cryer in charge. Unfortunately, he went bankrupt and was subsequently charged with lunacy at the Murchison Police Court, having been heard to say “that he had ridden 20,000 miles on a grasshopper”. (Goulburn Advertiser, 21 November 1878).

In March 1880 the name was changed to Baldwinsville after a new post-master, William Baldwin. This gentleman had established the first store in the district, four miles south of Merrigum, and had been postmaster of Merrigum since 1875. William Baldwin was also destined to become president of the Shire of Rodney but was not destined to

enjoy the immortality a place-name might have conferred. Apparently, sympathetic residents of the village took pity on the local railway guard whose tongue, it seems, had trouble in manipulating the syllables of ‘Baldwinsville’ and the name was changed to Byrneside in 1895. Lewis Byrne, who was thus honoured, first came to the district in 1869 and ran a farm near Byrneside. He also surveyed much of the surrounding area and died in 1900.

In its heyday, Byrneside had a school, a forge, three hotels, a brothel, a butcher’s shop, a football team and of course, the Byrneside Public Hall. There was also a creamery for the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Company and an annual gymkhana.

In 1886 a deputation from Tatura protested against the building of a railway station at Baldwinsville “only two miles and sixty chains from the Tatura station,” but when it was eventually built it had a greater annual turnover of wheat than other station on the line with supplies being drawn from most of the Harston-Stanhope area.

A telephone exchange was established in 1926, when there were nine lines into Byrneside, and like the postal service, it was conducted by the local storekeeper. For thirty years the store was run by Mr A.W. Halsey, whose voice became familiar to scores of local children. Every December it was their custom to ring the Byrneside exchange and ask for Father Christmas. Mr Halsey would then tie a handkerchief across his mouth to muffle his voice, jingle a Chinese chime to imitate sleigh bells and then ask what his small listeners desired on Christmas morning.

The first proprietor of the present Byrneside store was John Morrissey who came to the village as a teacher at the school, situated south of the highway. With the help of his wife, he built the store into a thriving enterprise with seven employees. He also built a piggery and in later years entered parliament and became Minister for Railways. Morrissey’s successor at the store was Stephen O’Toole, who was the owner in June 1902 when it was completely destroyed by fire. During his time, much of the business there was transacted by barter.

As early as 1885, the Roman Catholic community was served by ‘the Junction Church, Baldwinsville’. The foundation stone of St Patrick’s Church was laid in November 1897 by the Very Rev. T.J. O’Connell and the contracting parties to the first marriage celebrated in the building were Stephen James O’Toole and Johanna O’Brien.

The Public Hall at Byrneside was built for 640 pounds and opened in May 1894 accompanied by a three-day bazaar. The advent of electric power was celebrated at Byrneside by a dance and euchre party at the hall in May 1940. G.B. Donaldson was the president of the committee and the lights were turned on by the Hon. J. McEwen. In 1947 the building was renovated and 200 people attended the memorable re-opening ball.

According to the Guardian, “The energetic secretary of the hall committee and ball was Mr A.W. Halsey”.

SUSTAINABLE SOLAR LIGHTENS THE LOAD FOR TATURA MEN’S SHED Tatura Men’s Shed has installed a state of the art 5.2 kW solar system with individual inverters for each of the 20 panels. Solar power will reduce the power bill as the Shed operates during the day Tuesday 10am - 4pm and Thursday pm. By reducing running costs, more equipment can be purchased, more support can be given to our community and importantly, membership will be affordable to all on-comers.

Tatura Men’s Shed recognises the tremendous support we receive from our community and we thank Tatura Milk Industries, who through the Tat 200 Bike Ride 2014 donated $2000 and Greater Shepparton City Council who recently approved a matching grant of $2500 for solar.

The great support our community gave for the highly successful ‘Master Chef Matt’ Luncheon, supported by ‘The Splinters’ Brass and Woodwind band and Tatura Hot Bread, raised over $6000. Such support and hard work by the Shedders means additional, identified equipment can also be purchased. Recently the Australian Men’s Shed Association gave $3300 to our successful submission to establish an engineering section.

This area now has a working lathe so if there are men out there who would like to have some training in this area, we have highly skilled men ready to help.

The Federal Government, through our electorate of Murray, has identified Tatura Men’s Shed and Rotary Club of Tatura as a worthy candidate to apply for funding for a joint shed to store additional materials, works in progress and donations of items from the community. Rotary has never had their own dedicated area for items such as their BBQ and have had to rely on members to store their large resources. We await the result of this submission.

State Champions Once Again

2016 URBAN JUNIOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS COME TO TATURA The Tatura Urban Fire Brigade is hosting the 2016 Volunteer Fire Brigade Victoria (VFBV) Urban Junior State Championships in Tatura on February 27 and 28. Junior fire brigade competition has a proud 41 year history with the annual State Championships attracting around 70 teams from across Victoria, Tasmania and as far as Western Australia. It is also popular with spectators, with crowds of around 1500 typical.

For those unfamiliar with fire brigade competition, many volunteer fire brigades from around Victoria and other states have teams that enter regular competitions held from November to March each year, culminating in the annual Victorian State Championships in late February.

The events differ and use fire-fighting equipment such as hydrants, hoses, branches, ladders, carts and pumps. At junior level, the events are aimed at enhancing leadership and practical skills for use when the juniors become operational at a later stage of their CFA involvement. The events are action packed with the difference between winning and losing sometimes coming down to just fractions of a second.

The Tatura Junior Fire Brigade has a long history of competition and success. This is a magnificent effort, especially against towns with much greater population and firefighting financial resources than Tatura. Some achievements include: 2011 – U14 State Champions and Runner Up Overall Champion Brigade 2012 – Overall Champion Brigade 2013 – U14 State Champions and Runner Up Overall Champion Brigade 2014 – U14 State Champions, U17 State Champions and Overall Champion Brigade 2015 – U14 State Champions, U17 State Champions and Overall Champion Brigade The junior team also won the 2013 and 2015 Australia Day Tatura Sports Awards.

The 2016 championships will be the third time Tatura has hosted the event, with the past two events in 2007 and 2011 being very successful.

DECEMBER IN THE GARDEN This month you may not have a lot of time available to spend working in the garden and what time you do have, we are sure you will want to spend it relaxing over the Christmas period. So we will keep your job list short this month!

What a beautiful plant, the Hydrangea. You will notice it is in full flower at this time of year. Hydrangeas love to have their root systems kept moist during these hotter months just as much as they appreciate shade or at least part shade. It’s a good idea to prune immediately after blooming, cutting out all stems that have just flowered and leaving the others alone.

Keep an eye out for powdery mildew in humid conditions, Aphids can also be found at times.

Fruit trees will be forming fruit, so water regularly and mulch well around the base, (not too close to the trunk as this could cause rot). Give the fruit trees a good dose of slow release fruit and/or citrus food or well composted manures to help promote the flowering/fruiting process along.

It’s a good idea to feed Citrus trees with a high nitrogen fertiliser such as chicken manure. Always water well, spread fertiliser around the drip line of the plant and water well again.

Caterpillars can be a one of the pests that you’re likely to find around the garden and vegetable patch at the moment. White fly is another common pest you will find on your tomatoes and a soap spray can be effective for these.

As tomatoes come into flower, fertilise with a potash as this helps kick along the flowering fruiting process. They may need to be staked now if not already done to help maximise yields of Tomatoes. Top up the

vegie patch with manures and mulch. Dynamic lifter is another well know fertiliser not only great for vegetables but for the whole garden. If there are spots needing to be mulched, its time to do it now as temperatures are climbing and it saves not only the health of your plant but also your water usage.

Deadhead your roses after their flowering flush to keep a tidy appearance and promote more flowering. You will find your roses may flower longer by keeping up this process throughout their flowering period. Fertilise with a rose food and keep water up to them during these hotter months.

Mulch around the base of the plant to keep the soil moist. Deep watering is always more effective as this encourages the plant’s roots to travel deeper into the soil rather than becoming surface drinkers and drying out too quickly with shallow watering. This is a good thumb rule for all plants in your garden.

Mulch! Mulch! Mulch! Its getting hotter, so be sure to mulch your garden now before the soils get too depleted of moisture. It will help suppress those weeds and cut the watering bill as well as your precious time. Use mulch such as pea straw, sugarcane, Lucerne, or bark chips. Always water well before laying your mulch.

Fill bird baths with water if you have them. Many birds die just from a lack of access to water as our temperatures soar up to the high 30's and into the 40's at times. It’s always a pleasure to watch birds splashing about the birdbath and be sure to keep them topped up with fresh water.

Why not pot up some colour for Christmas. Petunias are an excellent choice for some red and white colour in pots and Verbenas can also make an impressive display. Now is the time to be doing this to look good in time for the special day.

PHOBIAS (51-60)

Our list of phobias continues this month with the next ten most common.

I’d like to mention that for those of us without any phobias or who suffer from a major phobia that is easily understood such as the fear of spiders, some of these other phobias may appear humorous. However, what might be laughing matter to many of us is not so to a phobic and we need to afford these people a little sympathy and dignity. Having said that, I have to admit that some of these latest phobias are a little strange.

51. Anatidaephobia – The fear of ducks (or geese or swans), (from the Greek ‘anatidae’ meaning water birds). While ducks and geese can become very aggressive, this is not what sufferers fear. No, a person suffering from this condition feels that no matter where they are or what they are doing, somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching them. People with anatidaephobia may have suffered from a traumatic experience involving a duck or a goose, probably during their childhood or they may have simply decided that this is a really cool phobia to suffer from.

52. Pyrophobia – The fear of fire (from the Greek ‘pyr’ meaning fire).

To some extent, the fear of fire is healthy and normal but in the case of a phobic, the fear turns debilitating and often affects their daily life. To a pyrophobic individual, the mere smell of smoke or something burning can trigger an intense anxiety attack. One would assume that these individuals have electrical appliances around their house rather than a gas stove or fireplace. One would also assume that very few of these people would be smokers, so in a strange way, this phobia can help you avoid lung cancer.

53. Ranidaphobia – The fear of frogs (from the Latin ‘ranidae’ meaning the family of amphibians). This phobia often originates in childhood when the impact of fairy tales involving ugly frogs can be traumatic.

Myths that warts are caused by touching frogs and science shows on TV that highlight the fact that many species of frogs are poisonous or allergy inducing also play their part. Frog phobics have also mentioned that they associate evil and death with the ominous croaking of frogs, hence the expression ‘to croak’.

54. Galeophobia – The fear of sharks (from the Greek ‘galeos’ meaning shark). Most of us have a healthy respect for sharks and it is quite normal to run screaming from the water if a shark fin is sighted. However, shark phobics take this to the extreme and are afraid of going near oceans, lakes, rivers, on ships or boats and avoid visiting aquariums despite the fact that sharks are safely restricted behind sturdy glass windows. In some cases, the fear is so bad that they won’t swim in a backyard pool and may faint at the mere image or word about sharks. I was going to include something funny here about ‘white pointers’ on the beach but my wife wouldn’t let me.

55. Athazagoraphobia – The morbid fear of being forgotten. This is not quite the same as getting stood up on a date although it can be quite traumatic at the time. (I still haven’t forgiven you, Samantha Worthington). People with this phobia tend to have low self-esteem and self-confidence and are afraid that people will forget that they even exist.

Often, such people are inherently introverted, depressed or tend to lack the ability to interact normally in society. They are, by nature, shy and passive and often worry about simply fading into oblivion and no-one will notice that they’ve gone. This reminds me that I have a friend with this phobia so I suppose should give him a call and reassure him that somewhere there’s a duck watching him but I can’t remember who he was.

56. Katsaridaphobia – The irrational fear of cockroaches. The name cockroach comes from the Spanish word for cockroach, cucaracha. Most people find cockroaches disgusting and creepy but people with roach phobia take this to the extreme. To avoid cockroaches, phobics may frequently clean rooms and carpets, sweep hallways, spray insect-killer and seal off doors and windows. Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects with some species able to survive for a month without food. There is a popular myth that cockroaches will inherit the earth if humanity

destroys itself in a nuclear war as they have a much higher resistance to radiation than humans. However, they are not exceptionally radiation resistant compared to other insects so they will still have to share the planet, which may be a comfort to us as we are breathing our last breath.

57. Iatrophobia – The fear of doctors (from the Greek ‘iatros’ meaning healer). This is quite a common phobia in young children as they are usually stuck with a needle when they visit the doctor. Although most people grow out of this as they get older, iatrophobics would rather suffer than seek professional help. When they do find the courage to see a doctor, they have a full blown panic attack with elevated blood pressure, rapid breathing, nausea or other gastrointestinal distress which can make it difficult for the doctor to reach an accurate diagnosis.

58. Pediophobia - The irrational fear of dolls (from the Greek ‘paidion’ meaning little child). Sufferers are usually afraid of all humanoid objects including mannequins, marionettes, ventriloquist’s dummies, wax figures and robotic figures. Many sufferers are also known to fear little children.

Dolls have fixed staring eyes which can make younger children especially afraid of them. Please note that if an evil doll such as Chucky suddenly comes to life, then this fear is no longer irrational.

59. Ichthyophobia – The fear of fish (from the Greek ‘ichthys’ meaning fish). Sufferers tend to have a full blown panic attack at the sight or thought of a fish and we’re not talking about sharks here but all fish, whether they’re goldfish, aquarium fish, rainbow trout or dead fish in the supermarket. To these people, ‘Finding Nemo’ is a horror movie and a film like ‘Jaws’, well let’s not even go there.

60. Achondroplasiaphobia – The fear of midgets or little people.

Sufferers refuse to attend a circus or carnival in case they encounter a midget or dwarf. This can be a double whammy if they’re also afraid of clowns. According to reliable sources on the Internet (so it must be true), Lindsay Lohan suffers from this phobia. I think she should be more concerned that somewhere a duck is watching her.

FOLDING DAY VOLUNTEERS

NORMA CARLAND When Norma moved to Tatura from Katandra in 1991, her friend June Cohen suggested that she come along and volunteer at the Bulletin.

Norma subsequently joined the Bulletin committee and helped out with advertising for the next twelve years. In 1999 when the folding day volunteers were looking for additional help, Norma joined that group as well and has been assisting ever since. She still helps with the distribution of the Bulletin, taking copies to the Mooroopna Bowls Club, Rodney Park and Mooroopna Probus. She said that the people at those venues eagerly look forward to each new edition and read it from cover to cover.

Norma enjoys the social aspect of folding day which gives her the opportunity to catch up on all the latest news. She said that the physical exercise involved in compiling the Bulletin is an additional bonus although she still keeps fit playing tennis for both St. Mary’s and Harston and bowls at Mooroopna.

In her spare time, Norma is involved with Meals on Wheels and knits blankets which she donates to the hospital. She also enjoys doing jigsaws.

“I must have done thousands over the years,” she said. She has three children while her partner Joe has four. Between them they have sixteen grand children, thirteen great grandchildren and another on the way.

THE CHRISTMAS SOCK Everyone thought the sock was too big. Bilco the walking robot certainly did. He was meant to be sticking out of the top as it hung above the fireplace, but Edward the unboxed teddy bear with his shinny black nose insisted he get top billing. Bilco slid further down inside the sock, rubbing shoulders with a rolled-up action comic who tried to complain but his voice was all muffled. Everyone agreed though that the small boy who put up the sock was cheating a bit. The sock belonged to his big brother who was away at the war. But what could they do about it?

They went where they were put that night. Gerry was a wind-up racing car. He was annoyed because one wheel had got caught in the sock’s woollen side and he continued to whine, his motor threatening to catch fire. Way down in the bottom, creating a rather large bulge in the toe was an orange. Everyone knew it was there for this was wintry England and

the smell was quite rare. A collection of metal toy soldiers had got loose from their box and were jostling for space among some wooden cut-out zoo animals, elbowing out small packets of sweet, ‘kiss-me now’ lollies.

Everyone finally fell silent as the fire died down. The only sound coming from the wind outside as it tossed the recent fall of snow around like swirls of white fairy floss. It was Christmas Eve at last.

Out of this curtain of white appeared a small saloon car. It stopped at the house and a lone figure crunched through the snow to the front door, letting himself in. The soldier smiled at the sock hanging full and inviting.

He took a Christmas-wrapped parcel from his tunic, adding it to the top and, freeing himself from his army boots, tiptoed upstairs.

Masterchef guest speaker at australia day The Tatura Australia Day Committee is very happy to announce that Matthew Hopcraft will be the guest speaker at the Australia Day celebrations in Tatura on January 26, 2016. Matthew grew up in Tatura and is the son of Tatura residents Gary and Helen Hopcraft. He was a contestant in Season 7 of MasterChef Australia, where he finished 6th.

Matthew says was fortunate to cook for some of the best chefs in the world and received invaluable mentoring and support from the MasterChef team.

The Australia Day celebrations in Tatura will commence at 8:30am with a free egg and bacon breakfast and the ceremony will start at 9:30am.

During the ceremony Australia Day awards will be presented and there will be entertainment. Following the ceremony morning tea will be available.

The Committee invites everyone to come along to celebrate what’s great about living in Australia.

Just when we were all feeling despondent after the long cold dry winter which suddenly turned into a premature, unnaturally hot summer, dry of course, Mother Nature puts on one of her unexpected turns with RAIN. Although it was unwelcome in some places, for so many it had a rejuvenating effect. All of a sudden everything looked fresh and we felt it would not be impossible to think of planting again in the early autumn.

And so it is with the nursery. The acacias, which were sown during the winter are pricked out and galloping along. One particular variety, A. pendula (the Weeping Myall) which incidentally grows naturally along the banks of the Billabong Creek in the Riverina, is always a slow germinator.

Last year it took 48 days but this year it was down to 24. I would have given up long before had it been my job. On the other hand, wattles grow very quickly once they are past the nursery stage. The eucalypt seeds are about to be sown. They are the reverse of the wattles as they germinate quickly in the warmer weather but are slow growers once out of the tube.

However, they outlast acacias, in most cases, by generations not merely years. Also, the slow growing and maturing trees have durable timber suitable for many uses. However, each has its place and the trick is to make sure we find it. 104 varieties have or will be sown this season so I may be able to tell you about some of them next time.

MURCHISON and DISTRICT SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB

I'm pleased to have something positive for readers this issue, this being our last meeting and games afternoon. November 2, was the best afternoon my husband and I have had since joining the club 14 years ago. We had two new members attend, one member joining up his wife, who unfortunately was unable to attend.

If people of Murchison and District would only take an hour or two out of their day to come and see the camaraderie and friendliness our club offers, it could make a whole lot of difference between our club closing, or remaining open. If this club closes, and it will if more people don't give their support by becoming members, then our rooms will be taken over by Greater Shepparton City Council for their own use and who knows what that will entail.

Indoor Bowls was played with men versus women and lo and behold, I'm very pleased to report the women beat the men. I was having a great game of euchre, listening to the laughter and camaraderie from the Indoor Bowls players. That in itself was really something to behold.

Our game of euchre also had its amusing moments with many laughs.

Monday, December 7, will be our Christmas cold luncheon. Please note there will be no meeting unless something of importance arises, which I doubt at this time of year. Hopefully, as there is no meeting, we may attract more members, or intending members. One can only hope, and what a lovely Christmas present for the club that would be! Yes, no doubt a games afternoon will follow.

Luncheon starts 12.30 p.m. If you’re attending the luncheon, please help with catering by supplying either a cold main dish, a dessert, or both if so desired as it all helps with catering.

Keep in mind it's a Christmas luncheon and yes, dressing 'Christmassy' will be more than acceptable, as well as a lot of fun.

Last month, the Tatura Bowling Club generously gave the Guides an evening of coaching on the greens. The Leader and Guides would especially like to thank Jason Carter and Phil Boyd for their patience and teaching. Who knows, it may mean a future champion just because of Jason and Phil!

By the end of the evening the bowls all weren’t in the ditch and they even managed to hit the kitty! Wow, great excitement. It was a great night and the girls loved the experience.

Bring a Friend Night was full of challenges and fun. Have you ever built a shoe tower with one hand? It sounds simple you say, try it!

October 31, at the Anglican Market, the Guides worked towards their service badges serving morning tea to the workers at their stalls. They all enjoyed the new challenge.

Our whole school excursion to the Werribee Zoo was held on October 23.

We departed school at 7 am with four buses filled with excited students and many parents. The junior students were first to investigate the Detective Habitat enclosure, followed by a wander through the walking trials. The meerkats, silverback gorilla and the lions were a highlight. After lunch, we boarded the Safari Bus and enjoyed watching the animals in the free range zoo. Giraffes, rhinos, hippos and zebras were our favourites. The Safari Bus tour was AWESOME, everyone sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the ride. It was lovely to have so many parents come along and make this a social, as well as educational, day out of school.

Early in the term we also conducted our swimming program from Prep to Six at Aquamoves. The students were in the pool each day for 45 minutes for a week. It was wonderful to observe the skills and confidence the children developed in the water from this intense instruction. They certainly enjoyed the last day as the students were able to utilise the rapid river and big slide as a ‘Job well done’ from the Aquamoves staff. We were so pleased that many parents were able to come along and observe their child’s lesson whilst sipping a cappuccino from the café. We would like to thank the parents who were able to assist with the changing of the smaller children to return back to school.

Junior School Council held a mini fete on October 13 beginning at 1 pm. The students, as well as many of the kinder community, enjoyed the activities and treats. Approximately $700 was raised and we would especially like to thank Juanita Lardner for aligning this event.

Transition with the Preschool is well under away and they have already made many visits to the Prep classroom, becoming quite familiar with the school environment. We are still taking enrolments for 2016. For all enrolment enquiries, please phone Toolamba Primary School on 5826 5212.

Our Prep children have enjoyed our Buddy System throughout the year with the Grade 5/6. A popular activity is peer tutoring of educational games on the notebooks. It is hard to believe that the school year of 2015 is almost done!

The Tatura Community House and the Tatura St Vincent De Paul have joined together to run budgeting and cookery program purposefully designed for the budget conscious people of Tatura and district. The people that live on tight budgets such as Centrelink recipients and selffunded retirees are the households where budgets are very important to sustain their quality of life.

The House is lucky to have a couple of great, retired teachers on their volunteer list who are prepared to donate their time and expertise to this course. This course has been very successful and we are looking forward to running more of them in 2016. It is totally free and if you have small children we offer free qualified childcare for the duration of the course each week. The bonuses include a free lunch once a week for both you and your children, new skills, and opportunity to meet likeminded people.

Aaron Niglia at Euroa It’s hard to believe that Dhurringile Tennis Club (DTC) is half way through the tennis season.

Both junior and senior teams have been very competitive thus far. The community play Hot Shots have been well received with many new juniors taking to the court and participating in Red, Orange or Green Ball. John Evans and Lisa Niglia have been coaching at Murchison Primary school at lunch time every Thursday via a grant the school received from COGS. The money raised will go straight back to DTC for maintenance and repairs. If you wish to take part in the ANZ junior tennis hot shots program please contact Lisa Niglia on 0428 266 310. Congratulations to Aaron Niglia who competed in the Euroa Junior 12/U round robin singles tennis tournament. After playing five singles matches for the day, Aaron came runners up. Well done. The club applied for the recent Holden Grant -“Need a new fence” but were unlucky this time around. Looks like the chocks have to stay around for another year. Maybe next time DTC.

OSSARIO DAY AT MURCHISON On Sunday, November 1, the annual Remembrance Day Mass at the Ossario at Murchison Cemetery attracted around four hundred visitors.

The service commemorated the 130 Italian Prisoners-of-War and internees who died on Australian soil during the Second World War and whose remains are interred in the Mediterranean-style stone building known as the Ossario.

The colourful service, mainly conducted in Italian, saw many students representing schools around the district, together with relatives and friends, locals and many others wanting to pay their respects. The service, featuring army bands playing rousing marching tunes, flying flags and the laying of wreaths, was well attended by Italian and Australian dignitaries, including soldiers dressed in Australian and Italian military uniforms.

Councillor Fern Summer, City of Greater Shepparton Deputy Mayor, emphasised it had been a difficult time during World War II for both the Italian and Australian communities when the Italians were interred.

Hence, it was important on Ossario Day to continue to pay our respects to them.

THE STORY OF SANTA CLAUS The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born to a Greek family during the third century in the village of Patara which is now on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas, an only child, was still young. Nicholas used his inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering and after dedicating his life to serving God, was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, Christians were ruthlessly persecuted and Bishop Nicholas was exiled and imprisoned. After his release, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325 and died on December 6, AD 343 in Myra and was buried in his cathedral church.

He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, a practice celebrated on the anniversary of his death and known as St Nicholas Day. Due to his generosity, he became the model of Santa Claus, whose modern name comes from the Dutch ‘Sinter Klaas’, which is a transliteration of ‘Saint Nikolaos’. There are many legends about St. Nicholas of Myra. One story tells how he helped three poor sisters. Their father did not have enough money to pay their dowries and thought of selling them into servitude.

Three times, St. Nicholas secretly went to their house at night and dropped a bag of money down the chimney, the first of which fell into a stocking that had been hung to dry by the fire. The man used the money so that each of his daughters could marry. On the third visit, the man saw St. Nicholas and thanked him for his kindness. St. Nicholas begged the man to not tell anyone because he did not want to bring attention to himself but soon the news got out and when anyone received a secret gift, it was thought that maybe it was from St. Nicholas.

Over the years, stories of his miracles and work for the poor, spread to other parts of the world and he became known as the protector of children and sailors and was associated with gift-giving. He was a popular saint in Europe until the time of the Reformation in the 1500s, a religious movement that led to the creation of Protestantism, which turned away from the practice of honouring saints. St. Nicholas, however, remained an important figure in Holland.

The Dutch continued to celebrate the feast day of St. Nicholas on December 6 and it was a common practice for children to put out their shoes the night before. In the morning, they would discover the gifts that St. Nicholas had left there for them. Dutch immigrants brought St. Nicholas, and his gift-giving ways to America in the 1700s.

In America, St. Nicholas went through many transformations and eventually Sinter Klaas became Santa Claus and instead of giving gifts on December 6, he became a part of the Christmas holiday season. In the 1820 poem, "An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas" by Clement Clarke Moore, he is described as a jolly, heavy man who comes down the chimney to leave presents for deserving children and drives a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer. The cartoonist Thomas Nast, added to the St. Nicholas legend with an 1881 drawing of Santa as wearing a red suit with white fur trim. Once a kind, charitable bishop, St. Nicholas had now become the Santa Claus we know today.

BUDDY BEARS AT TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL In our recent school review, our Kinder to Prep transition was remarked upon as being comprehensive and having 100% positive feedback from prep parents. Each year Tatura Primary School grade 5 make Buddy Bears for our future Prep Students. This program was started by Donna Crosbie when she was the art teacher at our School. Amanda Ross has continued the tradition.

The buddies have got to know each other over our Prep Transition afternoons, and on our Orientation Day in December, the grade 5’s will give their new buddies a special Buddy Bear to keep. The bears are made out of calico which has been cut out, dyed, filled, sewn together and decorated with an individual costume. At the beginning of the 2016 school year, our Prep students will be supported by their big buddies as they settle in at Tatura Primary School.

The early introduction of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) declared Fire Danger Period means landowners need to act quickly to deal with fuel loads and long grass on their properties. The Fire Danger period starts on October 26 and Greater Shepparton landowners should take immediate steps to reduce the risk of fire on their property and ensure it is well maintained throughout the season.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Citizens Services, Laurienne Winbanks said it is important landowners deal with any fire risks as soon as possible. “Potential fire hazards are a danger not only to the landowner’s property but also to their neighbours and their property, to livestock, crops and pets. We are entering a long, dry summer and the time to act is now. Vacant residential land should have fine fuel loads reduced by slashing and mowing grass, cleaning up leaves and twigs and removing any rubbish. Rural land should have sufficient fire breaks and all fire fighting equipment should be serviced and ready to go. Property owners needing to conduct controlled burns should contact Council as soon as possible.

Each fire permit application will be assessed by the Municipal Fire Prevention Officer and in some cases may be referred to the CFA for approval. Council’s Fire Prevention staff will soon commence inspections and properties identified as a potential fire hazard may be issued with a Fire Prevention Notice. If the Fire Prevention Notice is not complied with, costs associated with Council undertaking works will be incurred including administration fees along with the possibility of an infringement notice being issued.”

In 2012 the State Government introduced stricter penalties for people failing to comply with a Fire Prevention Notice. Any person who has failed to comply with a Fire Prevention Notice can be issued with an infringement with a penalty of $1516. Matters referred to court for failing to comply with a Fire Prevention Notice can now result in fines of up to $18,200 and / or 12 months imprisonment.

Ms Winbanks would like to remind landowners that trees and shrubs cannot be removed without consent from Council’s Planning department. “If you have already completed works, thank you for being proactive and please continue to maintain your land to protect everyone in the community from potential fire hazards,” said Ms Winbanks.

MUSEUM HELP WANTED

Tatura Museum continues to maintain its position as one of the top tourist attractions in the City of Greater Shepparton. This October the Museum had bookings for eleven bus groups to the museum, and the recently Heritage Listed German War Cemetery.

Visitors came from England, Germany and Austria, researching the large groups of overseas internees and prisoners of war who were brought to the Tatura area during WW2.

Family history researchers continue to contact the Museum looking for information on their ancestors, this month as far afield as Adelaide and Queensland. Each requires individual help and attention.

In order to keep up with this demand, we need more volunteers. We would be delighted to have people with photographic, computer and cataloguing skills, graphic artists, carpenters, and painters, but also, just as important, are people who like meeting and talking to the

visitors and who are interested in our local history, the WW2 Camps, the Army Garrisons and Army Hospital. Volunteers are asked to give two hour’s duty at the Museum on a regular basis, and other helpers are needed especially for Saturdays and Sundays between 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. and public holidays.

Each volunteer has an important role to fill.

Not interested in History? There is always work for the handyperson, or even the not so handy. The exterior of the building requires continual maintenance and painting, and we are often looking for someone to frame pictures or set up a display. People with graphic artistic skills would be especially helpful. Regardless of skill, all will be most welcome.

As we head rapidly into December the question gets asked more frequently. For many, Christmas is a time of excitement and anticipation, of travel and family, seeing old friends, new grand-children, sharing in celebration and fun.

In amongst the celebrations, the singing and the joy, sometimes we need a place to stop, reflect, grieve and acknowledge the struggles the year has brought. On Sunday, December 13 at 7pm we’re holding a ‘Blue Christmas’ service. This is a time of remembrance and reflection for the darker times that we’ve experienced this year.

If you’re more of a fan of Christmas carols, then the Sunday before Christmas (December 20) at 9am we have our Lessons and Carols service where the Christmas story mingles with carols both old and new. This will include a Christmas themed communion, so do come along and join us if you’re busy or away for Christmas itself.

Perhaps this year you’re wondering what Christmas is all about. Or you’re looking for a service suitable for your children or grand-children to learn about the Christian celebration of Christmas. Christmas Eve at 5pm we’ve got a short, fun service suitable for the whole family. Called “An Orange for Christmas?” we will create an edible gift that tells the Christmas story, and then you get to take it home and eat it.

If you’re looking for more of a traditional Christmas Communion then come along 9am Christmas morning. I promise it’ll be no more than an hour, so you’ll still be able to get the roast in the oven or the prawns on the BBQ. Regardless of what your other plans for Christmas are, we’d love to see you at some stage during the Christmas period.

THE ORIGIN OF WEDDING TRADITIONS

Wedding History: Up until the Middle Ages, weddings were considered community affairs and were held in the house of the bride. The only thing needed to create a marriage was for both partners to state their consent to take one another as spouses. Witnesses were not necessary, nor were the presence of the clergy. The vows were as simple as, "Will you marry me?" "I will." The role of the clergy at a medieval wedding was simply to bless the couple. It wasn't official church policy until the council of Trent in the 15th century that a third party, a priest, as opposed to the couple themselves, was responsible for performing the wedding. In the later medieval period, the wedding ceremony moved from the house of the bride to the church and began with a procession to the church from the bride's house. Vows were exchanged outside the church and the bride was handed over to the groom. Once that was done, everyone moved inside for Mass and then the procession, accompanied by musicians, went back to the bride's house for a feast.

The Bridal Bouquet: Until modern times, both the bride and groom wore wreaths and garlands made from aromatic bunches of garlic, herbs and grains which had magical and meaningful properties that would drive away evil spirits and help the couple have a happy future. Over time, these were replaced with flowers, symbolizing fertility and everlasting

love. Specific flowers have special meanings in many cultures. Flower girls carried sheaves of wheat, a symbol of growth, fertility, and renewal. Later, flowers replaced herbs and took on meanings all their own. Orange blossoms, for example, mean happiness and fertility, ivy means fidelity and lilies symbolise purity.

The Best Man: Many centuries ago, men who had decided upon a wife often had to forcefully take her with him (or kidnap her) if her family did not approve of him. The tradition of a ‘best man’ probably has its origin with the Germanic Goths, when it was customary for a man to marry a woman from within his own community. When women came into short supply locally, young men would have to seek out and capture a bride from a neighbouring community. In order to ensure success, the future bridegroom would select the most capable (or best) man he knew to assist with the important task. Once the kidnapping had taken place, there remained a real threat that the bride's family would attempt to recapture her, so the best man remained at the groom's side throughout the marriage ceremony, alert and well-armed. He then continued his duties after the ceremony by standing guard as sentry outside the newlywed's home. Traditionally, the bride stands to the left side of the groom and this was done to both protect the captured bride and to allow the groom to keep his right hand, or sword hand free to use for defence.

Giving Away the Bride: The father who gives away his daughter at her wedding ceremony, is following an ancient tradition that has evolved over hundreds of years. The custom dates back to the time when a daughter was considered property, and the groom had to pay a price to her family before he could be permitted to marry his intended. Today, the act of giving the bride away is symbolic of her parents' blessing of the marriage to the chosen groom.

Sixpence in Her Shoe: This good luck saying dates back to Victorian times. Something old represents the link with the bride's family and the past. Many brides choose to wear a piece of antique family jewellery while something new represents good fortune and success in the bride's new life. The wedding gown is often chosen as the new item. Something borrowed, such as a lace handkerchief, is to remind the bride that friends and family will be there for her when help is needed. Something blue is the symbol of faithfulness and loyalty while a silver sixpence in her shoe is to wish the bride wealth.

Throwing the Garter: The garter from the bride comes from the ancient custom of witnesses at the marriage bed (to make sure the couple consummated the marriage); the witnesses would bring it forth as a sign of the witnessing. It became such a violation of privacy that eventually the bride would have the groom throw it to prove consummation.

This is one of the oldest surviving wedding rituals.

Tossing the Bouquet: In years gone by, women would rip pieces from the bride's dress and try to grab some of her flowers in order to obtain a piece of her good luck. To escape from the boisterous crowd, the bride would toss her bouquet to distract them and then run away. Today the bouquet is tossed to single women with the belief that whoever catches it will be the next to marry.

Bridesmaids’ Dresses: The earliest tradition in bridesmaid fashion involved dressing the bridesmaids exactly the same as the bride.

As with many older traditions, the idea was that by setting up lookalikes, any troublesome spirits in the area could not fixate on the bride.

That custom gave way in Victorian times to dressing bridesmaids in white dresses but short veils, to contrast with the bride's voluminous veiling and train system. When society's fears of evil spirits diminished and commercial dyes became more available, ‘interesting’ dresses in colours such lime green, harvest gold, tangerine and fuchsia, made their appearance.

The Wedding Cake: In early times, the wedding cake was not eaten by the guests but thrown at the bride. It developed as one of the many fertility traditions surrounding a wedding. Wheat too, is traditionally a symbol of fruitfulness and was among the earliest grains to be ceremoniously showered on the bride and groom. In its earliest origins, the unmarried young women attending the wedding were expected to scramble for the grains to ensure their own betrothals, much as they do today for the bridal bouquet.

Around 100BC, Roman bakers (sadly for those of us forced to attend weddings) changed the tradition from throwing the cake to eating it.

They began taking the wedding wheat and creating small, sweet cakes which were eaten while the service was in progress. In medieval England the tradition broadened to include the practice of washing down the cakes with special ale called bride's ale, which eventually became the word ‘bridal.’

DOCTORS’ SURGERY NOW OPEN AT TATURA PHARMACY A new doctors' surgery has now opened at the rear of the Tatura Pharmacy and can be entered either through the pharmacy or from the rear of the building. Dr Muhammad Hassan, who has seven years experience of Emergency Department and General Practice, is already seeing patients and will be joined by Dr. Golam Kamal in mid December. Two female doctors will also be joining them by the middle of next year and other Allied Health services (such as podiatrist, nutritionist etc.) will be arriving in the near future. They are already able to offer ECG on site.

The surgery is open seven days a week, has bulk billing for everyone and offers same day appointments. The hours are from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. til 1 p.m. on weekends.

SUSTAINABILITY Throughout 2015, Tatura Primary School has been focusing on increasing sustainability across the school as part of the Resource Smart Schools program. Thanks to a grant from Sustainability Victoria, many great changes have been made across the school to reduce waste, energy and water consumption and increase biodiversity. We are working towards achieving our first Star through Resource Smart Schools.

Our two groups of student volunteers are called the Enviro Kids and the Waste Busters. The groups attend fortnightly meetings and implement changes. So far, we have seen containers go under the drink taps so the wasted water can be reused for watering the gardens. We have also created the ‘Golden Bin Award’ which is given to the class with the highest percentage of rubbish-free lunches each week.

It’s always encouraging to see the next generation taking an interest in the environment, and making changes for the better. We hope through our work with Resource Smart Schools, our students will develop an understanding of how to look after the environment for years to come.

TATURA HOSPITAL LADIES AUXILIARY Another year is drawing to a close and we will once, again be holding our Annual Christmas Raffle on December 11, 17, 18 and 19. First prize will be a large Christmas Hamper and second prize a selection of products donated by Unilever. This will be our main fundraising effort for the year. The raffle will be drawn at 12 noon on December 19 and winners will be notified.

After our November meeting our Auxiliary will go into recess for two months. The first meeting for 2016 will be held in Hodson House on Thursday, February 25. The number of members in our Auxiliary is, unfortunately, declining and we would welcome new members to join us.

We meet on the 4th Thursday of each month. All money raised by our fundraising stays in Tatura and goes towards purchasing furnishings and equipment for the Hospital and Park Villa Aged Care Facility.

Our ladies are most appreciative of the generous support from the Tatura and surrounding district people and we wish you all a Happy Festive Season and a healthy 2016.

SWEET CABBAGE

If your family is anything like mine, it is hard to get them to eat their cabbage when it is served. This is no longer a problem with this recipe as it cooks red cabbage in such a way that most people enjoy it and it is very simple. I have also tried it with green cabbage and although my husband still enjoys that, I personally don't believe it is as successful.

Ingredients: Half a Red Cabbage Half a Cup of Warm Water 1 heaped tablespoon of Brown Sugar 1 dessertspoon of White Vinegar 1 Granny Smith Apple, peeled and diced (into small pieces) Method: Shred the cabbage and place in a saucepan with the apple.

Add sugar and vinegar to the warm water and pour over cabbage.

Stir all together.

Bring to boil and then simmer til soft.

What Time’s the next Boat?

Travellers looking to board a bus at Tatura’s Fraser Street bus stop one Sunday early in November might have needed wading boots. A sudden surge of water from a passing storm quickly overtook drains leaving water backing up in many parts of the town, including the bus stop which looked a bit like a ferry terminal. Thankfully, there were no bus arrivals during the time it took the water to clear.

One local bottle-shop had to close due to flooding from a leaking roof, forcing customers, many having been caught in the inundating downpour, to paddle elsewhere along Hogan Street for their tipple.

As the dry weather continues into summer, memories like these will be hard to imagine.

With the Church Market Fete over, we are now looking to the celebration of Christmas. Our Christmas luncheon will be held at Lagozzino’s Top Pub, on Friday, December 11. Everyone is welcome, just call Treasurer Val Maynaird on 5824 3754 to book, donation of $25.00 to be in by December 4.

Thank you to the community who braved the cooler weather to attend our Market Fete. The vegetable stall was stocked to the hilt, full of great bargains and the garden stall had plenty for the green thumbs. There were new recipes to taste on the cake stall and on the haberdashery stall, there were beautiful hand work and knitting for all ages along with beautifully smocked children’s frocks for those special occasions. There was meticulous work by Elaine Lowe. At the cheeses stall you had to be quick before Bill Milner said, “All sold.”

If you didn’t have time for breakfast, gourmet coffee and Devonshire scones, jam and cream was available.

A tasty luncheon was served allowing time for a chat with friends and everyone agreed it was a very enjoyable and successful day.

The Girl Guides took the workers’ orders, pad and pencil at the ready.

It was a great experience for them and the Guides thank the Church for giving them the opportunity.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB Our meeting on October 22 was really bright and happy, with Gwen Wridgway being the Member Behind the Badge and telling us of her interesting life. Our guest speaker was Tania Bowman of Organic Delights, who spoke of the decision to go into organic farming and the work that went into getting it going and making it a viable business. Tania and her husband Rhodey are a busy, energetic young couple with three girls and a little boy to care for as well as endeavouring to establish an organic farm. They also run cattle and have a timber plantation which provides shelter for them. The timber is also useful for the trellis they train the apricot trees along. They have 1500 apricot trees and the best of the fruit goes direct to organic wholesalers or to farmers’ markets. The remaining apricots are dried in the sun naturally, no preservatives. They also buy other fruit varieties from farmers to dry in the same way.

They planted their first apricot tree in 2006, when their first little girl was six months old, and started markets in 2010. They won the Organic sun-dried apricot halves 2013 Bronze medal at the Royal Melbourne Show and from then on their business has really taken off.

Tania brought along samples to let us taste the jams, sauces and chutney they produce. The members all agreed it was a very interesting and enjoyable meeting. Tania has a wonderful way of explaining everything and is a natural speaker. Joan Dillon thanked Tania on behalf of the club.

We are looking forward to the Mystery Trip that Lynette and Geoff have in mind for us, planned for November 19. The signs pointing the way to Christmas are multiplying by the day and it’s becoming hard to walk through a shop now without tripping over some type of symbol of Christmas. I don’t find some of these images all that helpful but it none-the-less causes me to wonder what Christmas is about, where it came from and what it has become. Despite what we may like Christmas to be, at the core it is the celebration of the birth of a long awaited saviour or rescuer. Understanding the root or source of things around us is generally important for me.

I realise that birth notices have changed quite a lot over recent years given the advancing communication technologies but the birth notice for this saviour, Jesus the Christ, was uniquely announced by the prophet Isaiah approximately 700 years in advance and went something like this: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” The announcement was later completed by an angel, then joined by a whole choir, telling a group of farm hands that Christ the Lord had been born, where to find him and singing “Glory to God in the heavenly heights, peace to all men and women on earth who please Him.” It’s worth pondering how these practical farmers returned from visiting this young child amazed, glorifying God, spreading the good news and reporting that they found things exactly as the angel had told them!

This birth notice was astonishing and His life and death were remarkable but who needs a saviour in modern Australia when we have all that’s being advertised in one way or another as we approach Christmas? This is what God has to say about that in the Bible: “Since we’ve compiled this long and sorry record as sinners and proved that we are utterly incapable of living the glorious lives God wills for us, God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ.”

There are many topics that I find worth pondering but none greater than the purpose of Jesus coming into our world and my faithful daily response to Him.
