GREATER SHEPPARTON SENIORS FESTIVAL Greater Shepparton will be busy with activities this October in celebration of the Victorian Seniors Festival. The Victorian Seniors Festival runs annually throughout the month of October, celebrating the more than one million Victorians aged 60+ who make such a valuable contribution to our society. The festival is focussed on getting out and about in your local community, with more than 2,000 events and activities to be held around the state for older Victorians. A total of 32 activities and events will be held in Greater Shepparton for local seniors. They will include a Cultural Bus Tour to local places of significance of our multicultural communities, Barefoot Bowls, Festival Country Concert, Seniors Gala Dinner, Movie Matinee, River Heritage Walk and Talk, Seniors Trivia Afternoon and many more. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe, encouraged seniors to get

involved. “The Victorian Seniors Festival helps our seniors stay involved and engaged in our community,” Cr O’Keeffe said. “Council is proud to support this wonderful event, which not only provides great entertainment, but also encourages our Greater Shepparton seniors to live healthy and active lifestyles.” Greater Shepparton City Council’s Seniors Festival Booklet contains details on all 32 events as well as more information on the Victorian Seniors Festival. The booklet can be found online at greatershepparton.com.au, at Council’s Welsford St Offices and at local community hubs and agencies. All event bookings open Tuesday, September 17, and each closing date can be found in the booklet or on Council’s website, so don’t miss out. For more information on the Victorian Seniors Festival visit seniorsonline.vic.gov.au, or for local enquiries call Council on 03 5832 9785.

The latest Fun Run for the Fins and Fenders Car Club was to the Barmah Hotel and with excellent weather for this time of year, a good day was had by all. We left the club rooms a bit later than usual and drove in convoy to Echuca, where we stopped for morning tea. Our president had brought along bottled water and biscuits and a few members purchased hot coffee at a cafe near the top of the Port area. Another four cars joined us before we continued on to Barmah. Our meal was an extremely good one and the service was not only fast but served very much with a smile. After a few hours of sitting around the fire chatting we all headed back home. This was the first time most of us had worn our new club hoodies, which we found to be not only comfortable but very warm. - Janice Dreyer

The Teen Challenge Boys with Ev Leahy

TATURA PROBUS Tatura Probus held their monthly meeting on August 22. There were 35 members present and a few away to warmer places. President Ev Leahy opened the meeting and welcomed guests and new members. After business was dealt with, Margret Chance give a report on our day out to Swan Pool Art Collections. It was a very interesting day with lots to stir the imagination. It is amazing the items that can be made out of scrap. A beautiful lunch was cooked and served by Swan Pool volunteers. Look out for the exhibition next year as it is certainly worth a visit. Ursula was the member behind the badge and she took us back to her homeland Bavaria. She wore her beautiful national dress while she spoke about her trip home with her friend a few months ago. They cruised around the Mediterranean and along the rivers of Italy and Venice, spending time with family and friends. She had a wonderful time ending up in Frankfurt. After a cuppa and chat, Phyll Mactier introduced the boys from Teen Challenge, Ryan, Keith and Bradley. The boys told their story of how they got into such life-threatening addiction. It was the most humbling and sincere hour just listening to those and many

more boys’ lives and where they are up in their rehabilitation. Teen Challenge is based in Kyabram. Ryan Grace was the mentor and if anyone would like them to share what they are doing to help other young men get in touch with Teen Challenge Kyabram. Brad and Keith said they had found faith in God and helped them to recover and they now have a future instead of feeling empty and alone. The boys mentioned how hard it is to get help when alcohol and drugs are everywhere. Thankyou boys for having the courage to tell your story. Next Lunch will be at Colbinabbin Hotel on September 19. September guest speaker will be Colleen Schoeborn talking about her involvement in the first moon landing which should be an interesting subject. Next meeting will be on Sept 26 at the Tatura Community House at 10am. Come along and get involved with Probus. Vale to our past member Merle King. She was a much-loved lady and we shall all miss her. Our sympathy to Merle’s family. - Edith Bradbury

Well it is that time of the year when we gird up our loins, leap into the breach all bright eyed and bushy tailed to face the obstacles of the new planting season. There is much tidying up, washing of boxes and tubes, seeds being extracted from their nuts and a general air of things happening. This season you will see a change in the way we will be displaying our wares. Instead of going by variety it is proposed we go by groundcover, under-storey, small trees and finally a section devoted to large farm and forest trees. Also the pricing system is under review, not only for tubed stock but also the stakes and guards. However, don’t panic, there are no ambit claims looking for 10% but rather some readjustments. Our Nursery Manager hasn’t disclosed what the new varieties will be just yet so that is something to look forward to. In the meantime, we have tubes available at 50 cents each. Also, the Nursery is only open on Tuesdays from 9am to 11.30am at this time of the year. Joan Baumber

Fleur Outside Her Studio

LOCAL AWARD WINNER FLEUR Local Goulburn Valley photographer Fleur Ferguson has won the national ‘Find A Photographer’ award for the Studio Design category, against many entrants from all over Australia. Those who have used her services will be aware that she has renovated an old styled country barn with a great deal of character and charm. As it is surrounded by lush beautiful gardens, a session with her either inside or outdoor is always successful. Originally from Avenel, she and her husband Andrew moved to their current dairy farm in Toolamba thirty years ago. They have a daughter, Erin, a son, Tim and two grandchildren. Fleur has been in business for eight years and had her studio for two, though her passion and interest in photography and design has been with her for most of her life. She loves how a story can be told in a photograph and how memories can be created with them. She says, “Photos are so valuable. Sometimes the photo is the only thing we have of the memory, especially if it is a loved one who is no longer

here. Then the photo is priceless.” She specializes in taking professional photographs from newborn babies, families, wedding, celebrations, events to pets. She will always create images that her client has in mind. When asked if she has a favourite type, she admitted she loves all photography and admires many photographers. She does particularly enjoy photographing a styled newborn baby session, saying it’s a very special time in life that needs to be documented with photos. She also loves photographing families, with the fun and laughter that comes with it. Being a photographer is more than just creating amazing imagery and with this in mind, Fleur continues to learn and develop her skills with the ever changing of technology. She attends workshop and training days and enjoys learning new things for her business. I will finish with a quote from her that says it all – “I love the reaction of my clients when they receive their photos and printed products.” - Janice Dreyer

SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been a very busy Term 3 at Sacred Heart. Book Week was enjoyed by children participating in activities and the annual parade, our fire carriers shared stories with us on Indigenous Literacy Day and we celebrated with a Blokes’ Breakfast, the Friday before Father’s Day! It was lovely for the children to share the time with their visitors and have so many dads, grandads and families come along to school.

It’s official!!! Tatura has the best Sausage Roll in Australia. Tatura Hot Bread won the honour at a competition which was held in Sydney recently. The Great Aussie Pie Competition 2019 incorporated Australia’s Best Sausage Roll and was held at the ICC Building on Darling Harbour. Pie and Sausage Roll makers came from all over Australia to have their products judged by experienced judges from all different sectors of the Baking Industry. The product is judged on pastry, shape, colour, aroma, taste and flavour and it is judged hot and cold. Jeff and Glenda drove to Sydney with their precious cargo on board and hand delivered them to the Competition Headquarters. Jeff was very happy with the product that was taken up, but did not realise how good one of his products really was. The day their product was judged, a lot of Australia’s best bakeries were judged on the same day, which made it even more special. They also received Gold for their Chicken, Cranberry & Brie Pie, Chunky Steak & Caramelised Onion, Chunky Pepper & Tuscan Chicken, Plain Sausage Roll and Savoury Sausage Roll. They received Silver for the Plain Pie and Chunky Steak Pie. Jeff and Glenda would like to thank all their staff for all of their hard work. So do yourself a favour and call in and try one today.

A Young Platypus

HELP SPOT PLATYPUS IN LOCAL RIVERS A call is going out for people to get involved in a citizen science project to keep track of platypus numbers in rivers across the Goulburn Broken Catchment. Goulburn Broken CMA is working on the project with the Australian Platypus Conservancy (APC) Goulburn Broken CMA Project Officer Jo Deretic said the conservation status of the platypus had now been recognised as ‘Near Threatened’ by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. “Despite being a much-loved Australian animal, surprisingly little is known about how platypus populations are currently faring,” she said. “It is vital that we get a good idea of how this special species is faring in our region so that we can plan appropriate conservation action. The platypus is also an excellent indicator of the environmental qualities of our waterways, so monitoring its numbers also helps with assessing changes in the health of our rivers and creeks.”

APC Biologist Geoff Williams said platypus numbers had declined over many decades as a result of environmental degradation and altered flows. Human activities also had an impact, especially through the use of opera house yabby traps and other fishing nets that kill platypus. Fortunately, there is now a huge opportunity to bring the platypus back. Considerable work is being done by CMAs and other agencies to rehabilitate river habitats and improve environmental flows. There is a growing public awareness of the risks to platypus posed by litter and illegal fishing activities. The Victorian Government’s ban on enclosed yabby traps from mid-2019 will also save the lives of many platypus.” The APC has launched the Australian Platypus Monitoring Network (APMN), a dedicated website and app that allows for sightings of platypus to be uploaded immediately. Mr Williams said monitoring platypus numbers was a key part of future planning. “Getting the local community involved in recording sightings with the APMN will be a great way of helping the species. By tracking population trends, conservation action can be taken sooner rather than later to help ensure this remarkable animal’s survival. Monitoring doesn’t take a huge time commitment. Once or twice a week is fine on average, though you can also certainly look more often if you want. Similarly, a standard monitoring session requires just 5-10 minutes of observation time at each site. Many APMN participants fit their platypus scanning sessions into other day-to-day activities, such as taking a walk or checking a stock pump. Volunteers who are able to monitor on their private land are particularly welcome and they are able specify that their site is restricted and not open to use by other observers.” If you would like more information about platypus, please contact Geoff Williams from the Australian Platypus Conservancy on 5157 5568 or platypus.apc@westnet.com.au

COUNTRY WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION ANNUAL EXHIBITION The Goulburn Valley West Group of the Country Women’s Association held their annual Craft and Cookery Exhibition at Victory Hall, Tatura on Sunday, August 25. Goulburn Valley West Group is made up of branches in Harston, Mooroopna, Kyabram, Rushworth, Toolamba, Potters in Shepparton and Rodney Branch in Tatura. There is a Rodney Junior Branch of twenty members and these girls also had their work on display. These young girls decorated and sold cupcakes to help fund craft activities at their meetings. The cupcakes were popular and sold out very quickly. Many of the young girls had entries of outstanding quality and diversity considering their age. Beatrice and her spinning wheels were there and she welcomed anyone who wanted to try their hand at spinning. She also had a display of hand spun wool and garments made out of the wool, which won her a prestigious award at the recent State Exhibition. Each branch had handmade rugs/quilts on display and these will be distributed to local hospitals/ nursing homes. There was a wonderful and touching display of Angel Gowns made by two CWA members. These gowns are made from donated wedding dresses and sewn into gowns for babies and given to families after suffering the bereavement of their baby. This is a non-profit organisation. There were over 600 entries which included quality needlework, knitting, crochet, preserves of every type and delicious cookery, photography, horticulture, floral displays, ceramics, cards and it made for a wonderful display. Congratulations to all those who entered and to the prize winners. The Trading Table was stocked with craft books, sewing notions, pot plants, biscuits and really any craft item you could think of and did a roaring trade. The stage was decked out with a display of uniforms from the Police, CFA and Ambulance services. Thank you

to Marie and Jeff Wright who organised the display of uniforms. The Blue room upstairs had entries of ‘five’ small items from each branch and also the Branch exhibit from each Branch which includes a floral item, three craft items and two cookery items under the theme Floral. There was also ‘One Woman’s Work’ with all items in that entry of a diverse variety made by the one entrant. An all-day Devonshire tea kept the kitchen staff run off their feet keeping up to the demand. Everyone likes a CWA scone, jam and cream with a cuppa. Thanks must go to all the husbands who helped set up on the Friday and pack up again on the Sunday; we couldn’t manage without your help. Thank you also to all the public who attended and helped make this day such a success. See you all next year! - Janice Barrette – Publicity Officer

The remarkable achievements of a Tatura Fire Brigade member were recently recognised when Martin Rennie was inducted into the City of Greater Shepparton Sportsman’s Hall of Fame. Combining his fire fighter skills with a determined and disciplined determination to excel resulted in Martin achieving legendary status as a competitor in the State-wide Fire-fighting Championships, run by Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria in conjunction with CFA. The reel events with water attract attention, however the Ladder and Hydrant races are the premier individual events in the competition. The Ladder race is an incredibly fast event requiring competitors to sprint for 22 metres along the track, then climb a six metre ladder and cross a three metre platform in the quickest time possible. The event requires participants to be super fit and be able to place their feet in a precise position as they climb the ladder at full pace. Firemen from across the country train for countless hours as they try to bring their time down as low as possible. At Bendigo in 1996, Martin set a remarkable record time of 5.99 seconds which still stands today as the best time not only in Victoria, but across Australia. Martin remains the current record holder for the ladder race and a perpetual trophy has been created in his honour. Amazingly, he was to win the Ladder Race five times. Martin is a member of the famous Rennie family who have contributed many members to the Tatura Fire Brigade and have all been, and are still successful in Fire Brigade competition. At 11 years of age Martin joined two of his brothers in the Tatura Junior Running Team which won several championships. On moving into senior competition, he had a goal to win the Ladder race. He spent up to five days a week through a gruelling training program to eventually achieve this goal by winning the event on two separate occasions, culminating in him breaking the record in 1996. The Tatura Fire Brigade is justly proud of Martin Rennie who has won so many accolades as a Ladder Man and has held the record for the event over many years. Martin continues his commitment to the Tatura Brigade Competitions by acting as team coach for future firemen and women. The Brigade is pleased that Martin Rennie’s achievements on the running track have been recognised by the wider community through receiving this prestigious award. Any young people interested in joining the Tatura Junior Brigade and participate in competitions can contact the Brigade Secretary, Bill Stockdale on 0419 537 238. - Bill Stockdale, Brigade Secretary

PLEASANT SUNDAY AFTERNOON The Tatura and District Historical Society, together with All Saints Anglican Church, are facilitating a ‘Pleasant Sunday Afternoon’ on September 22nd at 2pm at All Saints hall, to which your group is cordially invited. You may have been following in the Bulletin, the fortunes of Liz Harfull and her latest cook book, Tried Tested and True, which recently won third prize in the Gourmand Awards in Paris, recognising the world's best cook books capturing an aspect of food heritage. There were thousands of entries from 200 countries competing for the awards. We are fortunate that Liz has included Tatura in her ‘Authors Tour’ as she was assisted by both the Historical Society and All Saints in tracking down the Rodney Cookery Book produced by All Saints ladies’ guild about 1907 and which features in her book. This book is not her only claim to fame and Liz will be sure to entertain cooks, writers and generally anyone else, when she speaks at Tatura. To help with expenses a gold coin donation would be appreciated and if some of your members could contribute towards afternoon tea this also would add to the afternoon's enjoyment. - Brian Williams, Tatura Historical Society

HORSE INDUSTRY CAREERS The horse has helped to build this great nation and continues to play many roles in our society. It contributes to multiple sectors of our community such as art, business, education, employment, entertainment, history, human health, rural practices, sport, recreation and tourism. We are developing a campaign to showcase these roles, highlighting the social and professional opportunities within the industry that surround it, as the well as the physical and mental health benefits of being involved with horses. The whole industry generates $8 billion to the economy per annum and is considered the fifth largest employer. However, due to its complex structure and diverse interests, this contribution is often overlooked. To launch this campaign, we have partnered with the Australian Centre for Career Education (ACCE) to conduct industry immersion days for all school students to learn more about careers in the Australian horse industry. An extension to this program is to connect with business owners, health care providers, job seekers, employment groups and others to help them realise the potential avenues in this vast industry. We are also working on plans to take this initiative to drought affected regions to assist farmers with some alternative income ideas. We have named this part of our campaign the HICCUP program – Horse Industry Career Choices 4U & Parents. For further information please visit horseindustrycareers.com. - Vanessa Hawkins

Interviews with John

Father Michael Morley

FATHER MICHAEL MORLEY My interview this month is with well-known Parish Priest, Father Michael Morley who will be retiring from his present role with the Catholic church in October. John: Tell me about your early days. Where did you grow up? Fr. Morley: I grew up in Moonee Ponds in Melbourne. John: Do you have any brothers or sisters? Fr. Morley: I was one of six children and I was number five. John: What did your parents do? Fr. Morley: Mum was at home looking after all of us and dad worked for the Victorian Railways. He was an office worker in Spencer street. He spent his entire working life there until he retired at the age of sixty-three for health reasons and then died three years later. John: Where did you go to school? Fr. Morley: I went to our local parish school St. Monica’s and from there I went on to St. Bernard’s College. Because I was more inclined with trade activities, I went from there to St. Joseph’s Technical School in South Melbourne and did a general trade course. John: Where did that lead? Fr. Morley: When I finished school, I became an electrical apprentice with a local firm in North Essendon and continued my studies while I was there and eventually became a fully qualified electrician. I worked with that company for the next nine years until I decided to go into the priesthood.

John: Was there somebody in your life who inspired this decision? Fr. Morley: Hmm, probably a few things came into play. My mum was originally from Rushworth. Her father owned the Glasgow Building where they sold hardware and after the First World War they moved to Melbourne. Mum was about eighteen at the time. Mum had the house in Moonee Ponds and she lived in that house for the next 71 years. She lived there as a member of her family and then when she got married, she raised all of us. I only ever knew one home so 35 Park Street, Moonee Ponds was always our home. John: Did you barrack for Essendon? Fr. Morley: My word I did, and still do. John: You sound very proud of your mum and dad. Fr. Morley: My parents did very well raising all of us and putting us through secondary school. There were some tough times but that was the norm back then. John: I think young people have different expectations nowadays. I remember we had sheets on our windows for several years until my parents could afford curtains. Fr. Morley: That’s right. I remember we had three petrol drums that mum had made a cover for that went over each of them and cushions that sat on top. They were our seats and three of us sat on them at the table during meal times for years and years. We just took that as normal. John: Life was simpler back then and perhaps a little happier than today Fr. Morley: Dad used to repair all of our shoes. He would put new caps on them and new soles. He also cut all of our hair which wasn’t that easy for him as he had arthritis in his hands and he would sometimes pull your hair accidently while he was cutting away. John: So, back to the question about why you became a priest. Fr. Morley: Sorry, I got carried away there. When my mother lived in Rushworth there was a priest there called Father Ted Tehan and the family used to do a lot looking after him. He was a beautiful old man and after mum’s family went to Melbourne he still remained a close friend and would visit mum in Melbourne and both he, and his assistant priest who used to drive him when he became too old, became my link to the priesthood. John: So, were they your inspiration? Fr. Morley: They were part of it, but my auntie was a nun and so was my sister and I also had an uncle who was a priest. We’ve always had religion around the home so that was always a strong influence on me. John: I understand, but it’s a huge step to quit your job as a successful electrician and begin training as a priest. Fr. Morley: Yes it was, but I think everything worked very subtly in guiding me towards the priesthood which is how I believe God works. I can remember one day when I was driving my electrical truck along one of the streets in Essendon and I saw a priest walking out of a house, and I thought, “I’d like to do that one day. Just go visiting people and see how they’re going.” These are the little things where God just puts the carrot out in front of you and gets you thinking. John: So, was that when you decided? Fr. Morley: Well, I’d always thought that I’d been very lucky. I had a good family, I had good health, a good job and I was doing very well financially. I had always planned on having a house paid off by the time I got married so that I could dedicate my life to my family but then I began to think, “Is this what life is all about?” I began to feel grateful to God for what I’d already been given and I then began to think what could I do for God. I think that was the key thing, having the thought that I could now do something back for others. I was only twenty-four but I felt that I’d been given a pretty good life. John: That sounds like a very mature thought for someone that age. Fr. Morley: Well hopefully I was. You know, the other influence for me was my boss. He wasn’t a catholic but when we were working together, he would often ask me questions about things he’d seen on television concerning the Catholic religion. By asking me these questions he was

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, September 2019 - Page 17 really challenging me about what I really believed in as a catholic. John: Was there a pivotal point, an epiphany of the road to Damascus if you like, where you decided, that’s it, I’m going to become a priest? Fr. Morley: What brought me to the crunch was that I knew my boss wanted me to take over the business when he retired so I had to make a decision. I couldn’t let it drift on for a couple more years. I really hated having to tell him because he really became like a second dad to me. I told him that I needed to talk to him and the extraordinary thing was, he told me I don’t know what it is but I know it’s got something to do with your church and it just opened the door for me to tell him. John: Where did you undertake your studies? Fr. Morley: In 1969 I went down to Werribee which was then our seminary. I was one of the last groups to go through there before they sold it and it became Werribee Park. I had three years there and then one year at Glen Waverley which became the Police Academy soon after and I finished my studies at Clayton. John: How long did your studies take? Fr. Morley: All up it was seven years. John: That’s a long time but I suppose it helps young priests to mature. Fr. Morley: Well it’s stretched out to give the young men a chance to think about what they really want to do. It’s not so much the intensity of the study but it’s spread out so that you get involved in parish work so that you can determine if this is the direction you really want to go. John: Did you have many people leave? Fr. Morley: Oh yes, quite a few. There was nearly forty of us that went in with me in 1969 and around half completed their training. Those were big intakes. There were around 400 men training for the priesthood at the two seminaries in Victoria. Now there is only the one seminary at North Carlton with about 50 fellows in it covering the seven-year period. John: That doesn’t seem very many. Fr. Morley: There are more priests retiring than young priests available to fill their places. That’s why half our diocese is now filled with priests from India and the Philippines. John: Where were you ordained? Fr. Morley: It was at St. Monica’s in Moonee Ponds in 1975. John: Where was your first parish? Fr. Morley: Technically because I was Melbourne I belonged to Melbourne but I approached Bishop Bernie Stewart to ask if I could go to a country diocese. My first appointment was at St. Killian’s in Bendigo which was the usual thing. They sent you there keep an eye on you but I only lasted one year and then I was sent to a parish in Wodonga with Father Les Ring for three years. I was then appointed to Benalla for four years then Bendigo for three years. After that I was given my first appointment as parish priest at Bright and Mount Beauty. John: How did it feel being in charge for the first time? Fr. Morley: It wasn’t too bad. Because I had already worked as an electrician, I was probably six or seven years older than the other blokes coming through. A lot of them were just coming out of school and were only seventeen and eighteen. I had already been out in the workforce and been used to taking responsibility which was a good grounding for me. John: How did your appointment to Tatura come about? Fr. Morley: After Bright and Mount Beauty I was appointed to Yarrawonga and undertook a lot of work there. Not only did I fix up the front of the old church as well as the presbytery, I also had the responsibility of building a new primary school. After eleven years, Tatura became available and I applied for it. John: What year was that? Fr. Morley: 2004. Monsignor Pat Collins had just retired. I was here for two years when Bishop Joe Greck rang me and said the Augustinian priest was moving out of Kyabram and asked me to look after the Kyabram parish as well. John: That would have been a big undertaking. You’ve virtually doubled the size of your parish overnight. Fr. Morley: Oh, it was more than doubled it. So, I took over both parishes and lived in both of them a couple of nights a week. I didn’t want Kyabram to feel as though they were just tacked onto Tatura. However, the Kyabram parish just escalated. When I took over the school, there were 240 pupils with twenty-five staff and when I left after eleven years, there were over 720 students with 100 on staff and the parish priest has the responsibility for that. Once it was clear that running both parishes was too much for one person, I was able to relinquish Kyabram and focus solely on Tatura.

John: We’re doing this interview because you’re retiring but you don’t look old enough to retire. Fr. Morley: I’ve been blessed with good health. We’re able to retire at 75 years of age and I’ll be 75 in October, so I’ve set the date for October 20. John: What are the greatest rewards with your job? Fr. Morley: I’d say just working with people, helping them to get through things and, please God, helping them to grow in their faith. John: And the greatest challenges? Fr. Morley: Probably just being grateful to God. John: Why is that a challenge? Fr. Morley: I think we need to express our gratitude more than we do. John: Are you saying that we take too many things for granted and that we should actually be acknowledging a higher source for our good fortune? Fr. Morley: Yes, and one of those ways is by coming to mass. It’s interesting because once upon a time we used to say that people were regular attendees at mass if they came every Sunday, and now we say it if they come once a month. I’m a strong believer in this because we have so much to be grateful for. We live in a wonderful country with so many facilities and benefits. John: What does the future hold for you? Fr. Morley: All I’m retiring from is the responsibility of looking after a parish. I’ll still remain on the committees that I’m currently on in the diocese and I’ll work with other parishes on the week-ends doing funerals, weddings and baptisms so that their priests can have some time off. I’ve got twenty-three nephews and nieces and I missed out a lot with such things as their twenty-first birthday or their wedding, because I couldn’t get out of the parish, so I’ll spend a lot more time with my family and friends. John: Have you ever found time for any hobbies. Fr. Morley: I always thought that one day I would get into doing more woodwork and I’ve always enjoyed playing tennis but probably my main hobby is my BMW R1150RS motor bike. John: How often do you ride your bike? Fr. Morley: Not enough but now I’ll be able to join a couple of mates of mine when they go for a ride on the weekend. John: I have a final question for you Father. If you had a super power, what would it be? Fr. Morley: A super power? Hmm, if I had a power it would be to do what I could for the poor. John: You need to be more specific? Fr. Morley: Well, I’ve got a real thing about water. I’d like to be able to go into places like Uganda and be able to provide everyone with clean, safe, drinking water so that would be my super power. John: Is there anything else that you’d like to bring up that I haven’t mentioned? Fr. Morley: Only that I’ve loved being here in Tatura and being able to share my life with so many wonderful people. It’s like living in a little hamlet off the beaten track and I’ve really loved the town and its history, particularly the influence of the Italian people and what they’ve done to make this town really great. I’ve also really enjoyed my involvement with Dhurringile Prison, and I’ll really miss that. It’s always been a bit like coming home to me, partly because of my mum’s involvement with Rushworth but also because I’ve got so many relations in the area. John: Thank you for your time Father. Tatura has been very lucky to have had you as their Parish Priest.

School has changed just a little bit since I went to Primary School nearly 70 years ago! We used pens with nibs, dipped them in ink wells of blue and black, sometimes red if I was being a smart alec because I was INK MONITOR (big deal). At Primary School in Cheltenham I learnt to sew…. come on now no laughing…it was clearly to see if we had hand co-ordination, needed glasses and could stand pain if we missed the cloth and got the hand. I also learnt to dislike swooping magpies who left me one day during lunchtime with a bloodied head and a dirty behind and walking home early was uneasy. In Wagga a year later I went to Demonstration School…so called because it was supposed I guess to demonstrate girls could adapt to being on one side of the property and boys on the other without coming into contact…. yeah right! High School taught me that just about every subject was boring except simple arithmetic, history, geography and reading the pink Sporting Globe under my desk when the teachers were not looking. But it changed for the better in second year where because of my want to become a journalist, I could learn typing and shorthand in a class of 43 girls. I did not distract the girls because I was ugly… real ugly with buck teeth and so scrawny I could slip through a crack in the floor. But I became second fastest in NSW in touch typing and a distinct and distant last in shorthand although in fairness I can still write the word THE in Pitman’s. I also loved English but for the life of me could not get a handle on Shakespeare and I was brilliant at simple arithmetic, but geometry and algebra were relatives of French and Latin and so to be avoided. But let us remember back in those days we did not have a calculator to work out sums, we learnt to hold a pen like our forefathers did who had such beautiful handwriting and the word computer I doubt had even been heard of. But today – this is my seven-year-old grandson Patrick when I asked him what he liked best at school. “Well grandpa I am the environmental officer and I make sure the kids know during school breaks about sustainability and all those things.” Patrick will go further than I have. - Dennis Booth Have some news to share? Kaan and Linda Gungor, both Australian born, have made such a difference to how these two amenities present. The thing that stands out most is the immediate impression of cleanliness. Kaan was born and raised in Shepparton and Linda is originally from Coburg in Melbourne. They first met when Linda was purchasing a car from Shepparton where Kaan was the Financial Manager. Married with one small son, they moved to Tatura from Kialla having purchased the caravan park in December of last year and have since taken over the Motel as well only a month ago. Though there is very little time for leisure activities, Kaan very much enjoys fishing and boating, as well as remote control cars that he used to race many years ago. And he has a real passion for Toyota vehicles. Linda, who is a Melbourne University graduate, working as a

Gungor Family clinical audiologist before having a family, enjoys cooking and baking and travelled a fair bit around the world while studying. They both particularly like Italy, the trip there being the first place they went together, both telling me what a beautiful place they found it to be. Most people are not aware of the new owners of the two businesses and they want to make the businesses boom. They are quite passionate about keeping visitors in Tatura, shop locally themselves and want to support locals, keeping money in our town. And they have certainly spent a lot of that already, having purchased new mattresses throughout and replaced old fridges and microwaves. New pillows ($700 worth) were delivered while I was there interviewing the couple. New carpet has been laid and all rooms and cabins cleaned from top to bottom LITERALLY, using four people for three weeks straight as well as this couple working until midnight themselves. Cleanliness is expected by those paying for accommodation but Kaan and Linda want to beat the expected standard. They went through numerous cleaners before finding one to their standards. They now have trusted staff, sourced locally and that includes a five day a week maintenance man at the caravan park, all of whom they tell me are great assets. The linen is cleaned professionally by Gouge and the rooms look and smell very clean. Kaan and Linda tell me their idea is to use the motto of "Clean, Simple and Comfortable" and the premises are

certainly that and more. They have made sure they do everything the right way, complying with all requirements from council, health and safety updating fire and safety equipment. For security and peace of mind the park has surveillance 24/7. Kaan tells me it has taken a lot of time and effort but they want both places to be somewhere they would be happy to stay themselves. The Family rooms sleep up to 7 people, Queen rooms sleeps 2, Twin rooms have a queen and single bed. Extra beds can be added if needed and cots are also available. There are plans to utilize the space left from the old restaurant - do you remember that from so many years ago? Maybe a lounge or function room. This space won't be left empty but the priority to date has been in the rooms and they are still working on being able to offer breakfasts to guests. Kaan said "We want to exceed our guest’s expectations with both cleanliness and service. We want people to remember us, want them to return to us and tell others about us." I believe they will do just that with the extra efforts that are put in by these two. Heaters on before guests arrive, ice for their drinks when it is hot. With no taxi running late at night in Tatura, Kaan has been known to act as driver for their guests. The online reviews since they have taken over certainly confirms this. Janice Dreyer

Most marriages today can barely get past the seven-year itch, but for Pat and Grace Niglia, it takes commitment, understanding and a great partnership for a successful marriage. Pat and Grace who recently celebrated 70 years of marriage, is a Platinum Achievement. They are local identities of Dhurringile, where they lived and worked hard for most of their lives, and were married seventy years ago at Sacred Heart Church in Tatura on September 3, 1949. Today they celebrated Mass with family and friends. Fr. Michael Morely gave them a special blessing and spoke about how wonderful and incredible it is to achieve such a milestone. Celebrations were later held at the P n’ F Palladium function room at Dhurringile where Pat and Grace’s siblings and their partners, Mary and John, Frank and Trish, Lena (Deceased), Amelia and Gerry, Roc and Lulu, along with eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren enjoyed a celebration dinner and cake. Both Pat and Grace are in their 90’s, still live a full and active life that would exhaust some of those who are 10 to 30 years younger. Grace loves to cook and continues to bake her famous Italian biscuits and Pat potters and tinkers in the garden and loves to read the papers. Congratulations Pat and Grace Niglia.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB DUST OF THEIR BOWLS An early start to the coming bowls season commenced recently when an invitation to a practise match against a Shepparton Golf side was received. The current Victorian State champions Division 1 team at Shepparton Golf had arranged a practise match with the Melbourne suburban side of Altona and Tatura was invited to play a seconds side from Shepparton Golf. Shepparton Golf President Richard Warburton welcomed all and an early BBQ commenced the day’s proceedings. The warm conditions, jovial atmosphere and the greens in excellent running form made for a great day of social bowls. Tatura Bowls Club's Opening Day a week later was in sharp contrast weather wise as wintry conditions had returned and the cool temperatures, strong wind and intermittent showers had only a small contingent of bowlers braving the elements on this day. President Rod Kirby welcomed members and invited Noeleen Boyd to roll the kitty to open the season and for Phil Boyd to roll the first bowl. Tatura's greens under Jason Carter and John Evans’ observance are running really well and many members, including visitors, are finding them a joy to play on when the weather conditions permit. Coming Events: Sept 27 Public Holiday 9.30am start - Club members 2 Bowls Singles Championship. Oct 1 - Midweek pennant commences. Oct 5 - Monthly BBQ and Members Draw. Oct 19 - Weekend pennant commences. - John Crilly

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle

Agnes and I were having our usual cup of tea and cakes at the bakery and I put down my cup and said, “I have been back to the doctors Agnes and he is very happy with my progress, in fact he said that there have been improvements in my health since I have been walking. Thank goodness I decided to do that. Anyway, he is a lovely young man and not married.” Agnes seemed slightly startled. “Merle, I am not sure what to say. You normally don’t like your doctors, or anyone else if I think about it, and for you to say he is lovely, young and not married, well what have you done with my real friend?” “Oh, you are so funny sometimes Agnes,” I replied. “You know I like people, in fact I’m quite a people person.” Agnes seemed to splutter a bit which is a dreadful habit really but I try not to draw attention to it, for her sake. “Merle, I am a little lost for words. You see, normally you are not very happy about most people and their actions, so saying that you are a people person seems somewhat of a stretch to me.” Agnes was wiggling in her seat a bit and tilting her head. Such a strange lady. Perhaps it’s her medication. “Well it just so happens that I am in a pleasant mood,” I said, “and this salted caramel cheesecake is the best cake I have had in a long while and is certainly helping my mood. Probably not my cholesterol, but definitely my mood.” I suddenly frowned as I remembered something I had to tell Agnes. “You know, I had a very annoying experience recently Agnes. Now that Garry no longer comes around to do the odd jobs for me, I had to get a couple of tradesmen in.” Agnes nodded sympathetically. “Yes that is a pity Merle; I know he was very helpful to you.” Agnes sounded sad but she is such a softy, she likes everyone to get along. “Well,” I continued, “at least he turned up when he said he would Agnes. I phoned two different tradesmen to arrange for some jobs to be done. They both said they would come and give me a quote that week. I had to phone both of them back after two weeks and got apologies, excuses and all the rest. So, I asked when they would actually be coming and they said next week for sure but I will keep you posted. I will be very interested to see if they can be bothered to turn up. There wasn’t even a phone call Agnes. I had made it quite clear that I wanted then both to phone me to let me know what was happening, but do you think I heard from either of them? No, I did not which was very rude. Just letting me know they were delayed would have been sufficient. I was only after a quote, I mean how long does that take? I will keep you posted about when they turn up, or don’t turn up. Just because I am an elderly woman on my own, doesn’t mean I should be put to the back of the queue.” Mat Langley

Agnes nodded in agreement. “I hear it all the time Merle. They can be very frustrating can’t they. My friend Simone waited almost three months for her tradesman to come and he never once phoned her. She had to keep contacting him and asking when he was coming. She was so angry. And I can tell you another thing too, she only needed a small job done but

she had a very big job to do after that one. Do you think she will use the same tradie? Not on your Nellie! She said she would never recommend him either even though his work was good. She said it’s just plain rude, like you say Merle and I agree too.” “There may come a time when they don’t have much work on and people have long memories,” I added. “Anyway, moving on Agnes, when I was at the doctors, it seemed that everyone there was sneezing, coughing, and blowing their noses. Don’t you just think that’s awful? I mean, I could feel myself getting sick just being there. Some of them didn’t even use a hanky, they just sneezed out into the air which was very rude. It becomes a vicious circle, Agnes. You go to the doctors because you are not well, but end up catch something in the waiting room. And those unsupervised snotty children. The mothers sit staring at their phones while the little beasts roam around freely. They come over and touch you on the leg or touch your handbag, then they look up at you with their snotty noses thinking they are all cute. Well, they certainly are not cute to me Agnes, not one bit. Snotty nose children are very unappealing. I can’t even imagine what germs they are carrying with them. My children never ran around with snotty noses, that’s for sure.” Agnes had that strange look on her face she sometimes gets, like she is lost or confused. “Are you okay?” I asked out of concern. Agnes smiled. “No Merle, I am just fine. It seems though that I have found my friend again.” What a strange thing to say, but I know she does get very lost in her thoughts now that she’s getting old. She is quite lucky to have me stick around really, but then that is what friendship is all about. But what I want to know is why these unsupervised children are just roaming about sharing their germs and why aren’t their mothers taking responsibility? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

TATURA WHERE SHOULD WE TAKE OUR BOTTLE TOPS? Following publication of the article in last month’s Bulletin headed Lids4Kids, Angelo Torresan from the Tatura Lions Club called in to our office to express his pleasure in reading the article but feeling a little concerned that we didn't actually list where people could take their bottle tops. Therefore, we now are advising they can be dropped off at either of our two Tatura Schools, where they will be most appreciated by all the children there, who are heavily involved trying to help. Envision, which is a volunteer company, has recently supported James, a 4 year old boy from Melton in Victoria, who was born without a complete hand. A huge Batman fan, he was provided with a Batman inspired Phoenix Hand made of the up-cycled plastic (bottle tops) and is already helping him learn to manipulate his hand muscles, providing him with mobility support and possibly even more importantly, helping him feel a little more confident. Our local Lions Club has taken up the collection as a project and a number of Lions clubs are collecting. Angelo is collecting in his shed and will eventually take trailer loads down to Melbourne. This is a great incentive and needs as much support as possible. Angelo says it would be great if more people got involved and understood that if these lids are just put in recycle bins, they end up going to landfill. The Plastic Hands (prosthetic) are made using a 3D printing blueprint that's available. Sean Teer of Envision says: "The bottle caps come in and we shred them and it's made into a filament. That is then fed through a 3D printer with a software program, and hey presto, we end up with fingers." To find out more, type Envision in Google. - Janice Dreyer

The Early Years - Medical Several private hospitals accommodated the sick of Tatura in the days before the present building was provided. The first hospital to which reference can be found was that of Nurse Baillie in Hogan Street. This hospital ceased to serve its purpose on May 3, 1910 when an attempt was made to burn it down. The arrest of Nurse Baillie and her confession to a charge of arson, caused a sensation in Tatura. The Guardian reported: “She has resided here for some time and was a wellknown, qualified nurse, and held in great esteem by all classes of the community.” She was committed to trial by Mr E. Moore, police magistrate, and Justices of the Peace, Messrs Hogan, Love and Williams in a case lasting seven hours. However, in the trial in Shepparton by judge and jury, she was found not guilty after the jury had been out for 25 minutes. The verdict provoked a storm of applause in the court. In the following year, Mrs V. Bolger opened a private hospital in Casey Street because her husband’s ill-health had caused him to retire as manager of the Commercial bank but by September 1912, she too was ill and friends gave her a purse of sovereigns before she departed from the town. In July 1914, Nurse Valentine’s hospital was functioning, and in January 1915 Sister Acheson opened in Hogan Street “a modernly equipped and up-to-date medical and surgical private hospital. Accouchement* a specialty.” (The Guardian) Older residents recall that in 1916 this enterprise was located in Casey Street next to the Shire Office, and later still

moved to the corner of Kerferd and Fraser streets. These were the days when comment was frank in the local papers and in July 1916 the Guardian reported: “Mr George Pogue of Toolamba is now in the Melbourne Hospital. There the belief is entertained that he will eventually recover.” The Tatura community also reserved a special place in its heart for the Base Hospital in Mooroopna, founded largely by the efforts of Dr Heily. In 1909 the Tatura branch of the ANA organised the first of a series of annual Hospital Sunday demonstrations in the public gardens, although for many years previously, there had already been an annual Easter sports meeting and procession in aid of the hospital. This was replaced in 1915 by a canvass for funds, which thereafter became the usual method of supporting Mooroopna. The next private hospital in Tatura was conducted by Mrs Leckie in the residence of Dr Brunskill and his successor Dr J. Park. Dr Park was teamed up with Nurse Mary Harford (1861-1955) who shared with him the reputation of bringing hundreds of babies into the world and never losing a mother. She came to Tatura in 1910 with her brother who was on the Guardian staff, and whose granddaughter, Margaret Harford was appointed to the local hospital staff the month after her greatly esteemed great-aunt died. * Editor’s note – Accouchement: The act of giving birth to a baby. - Source: Tatura and the Shire of Rodney, W.H Bossence (available for purchase from the Tatura Museum)

VALE MARY ELLEN SMITH Mary Ellen Rennie was born in Murchison on January 14, 1924, the second child for David and Annie Rennie. Mary and to her older brother, Frank became constant pals and close friends. Mary gained her Merit Certificate at age 13, and went to work at the Telephone Exchange as a telephonist. The war years when prison camps were set up around Murchison, were busy as there were limited telephone lines When not at work, the telephonists volunteered to sky watch and look for enemy planes which were suspected to be in the night skies. Mary met her future husband, Jack, at a Saturday night dance. They married in Rushworth in 1942 and went to live in Merrigum and worked the family farm with Jack’s brother and his father. Elaine, Pat, Brian and Ann were born during those years. When the farm was sold, Mary and Jack went back to Murchison in 1949 and stayed with Mary’s parents, who by this time had borne two more brothers for Mary, Ray and Ian. Mary and Jack purchased a small farmlet in Cussen Lane at Tatura where they moved to live while Jack ran a Livestock Transport business. While living there, Barry was born, and in 1952 the family, comprising of parents and five children, moved to the dairy farm they had purchased west of Tatura. In the beginning there was no electric power and cows were milked with the aid of a big diesel engine. The family operated the dairy farm for 18 years. In 1960, Bartlett Cordials was purchased and re-established with Mary being in charge of the bottle washing machine and organizing her children to take their part in the venture. The business was operated for 25 years including a relocation to the old Cleckheaton building in Hogan Street. In 1985 the soft drink business was sold and Mary and Jack moved to Wodonga and built and set-up an ice-making business which they operated for nine years before selling it and moving back to Tatura in 1994. Mary felt at home in Tatura and was happy to be back near family. After an illness and time in hospital three and a half years ago, Mary went to Moyola Aged Care for respite and told her family that she was not going home and instructed them to sell her house. Mary was comfortable in her new abode and had the security of the carers for health issues and the comfort of having meals served and laundry done. Mary worked with Sacred Heart Mother’s Club and the ladies committee of the Tatura Football Club for a long period. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League for several years and attended C.W.A. and Probus meetings on a regular basis. Mary enjoyed organized family reunion days in recent years when family members came together. She assisted in putting together family trees and groups of photos of previous generations of both sides of the family. Mary was a regular scone maker at the Tatura Bowls Club on Wednesday afternoon Bowls Days. Mary was not a participant in sporting activities, but enjoyed a game of cards or watching cricket, tennis and football on TV. Mary particularly enjoyed a trip to England to watch the Ashes and proudly met Alan Border and enjoyed getting to know some of the Aussie Cricketers. Mary enjoyed many overseas holidays which included New Zealand, Thailand, New Guinea, Fiji, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Europe. She has been around Australia twice, once by air and another time camping, and enjoyed holidays to Australian tourist destinations. A regular holiday over 17 years was to a holiday shack at Lighting Ridge where many friends were made and good times were had, excepting when it came to opal hunting as good finds were scarce.

15 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Servicing the Goulburn Valley

Mary Ellen Smith Mary’s older brother, Frank died in 1997 and Jack passed away in 2006, and older son Brian succumbed to cancer in 2014, but she was fortunate to have her three daughters and two younger brothers living nearby. She enjoyed visits from her 12 grand-children and 16 great grand-children and especially enjoyed the times when younger son, Barry was able to come home to visit. Mary’s funeral service was at Sacred Heart Church and left for the Tatura Lawn Cemetery. - Pat Noble

WORLD EVENTS

in October

October 1 – International Day of Older Persons. Ageism is the most socially normalised of any prejudice. The media portrays old people as senile and doddering on television, many employers discriminate based on age and some doctors apply a more relaxed attitude towards screening an older person for preventable diseases. Older people who succumb to these attitudes live, on average, eight years less than those with more positive attitudes. My mother often told me, “You don’t stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing.” She lived to 94. October 2 – Name Your Car Day. Cars are a part of our life, every day and in every way. We name our children, our pets, and sometimes even our body parts, so why not name your car. Actually, a recent survey showed that 94% of us name our cars, which is entirely different to calling our car names when it won’t start in the morning. So, if you’re one of the 6% lacking in imagination, pop out to the garage right now and give your car a name, although preferably not ‘Herbie’ or ‘Herpe’ for that matter. October 5 – World Teacher’s Day. This day aims to raise awareness of the importance of the role played by teachers all over the world. The responsibility for educating future generations is a very important one and should not be taken lightly. However, if you don’t already understand this, then a promotional day won’t make any difference. October 8 – Universal Music Day. Music enriches our lives in so many ways. It connects with our soul and can lift us up when we are happy and comfort us when we are sad. Just hearing the opening chords to a well-known song can evoke wistful memories and transport us back in time. By the way, I’m talking about music here, not hip hop or rap. October 9 – Curious Events Day. There are so many unsolved mysteries and curious events surrounding us on a daily basis and the

Excavator Hire 3 Machines 15 to 20 tonne Truck & Trailer Road Grader Cow Lane Rock 3 inch/75ml Good Operators and Machines Phone Greg Wright 0429 956 004

purpose of this day is to encourage us to think about them rather than take them for granted. Here are a few examples to contemplate. Who actually does drink the last of the milk and leave the empty container in the fridge? With all of his money, why did Donald Trump choose a hairpiece like that? Why does my cat always settle on my lap the moment I decide it’s time to get up? Why is a shop always frantically busy when I walk in and almost empty when I walk out? (and no, I don’t have a flatulence problem). October 10 – World Mental Health Day. There is still a stigma attached to mental health but the fact is, we all have mental health just as we have physical health. However, some people have problems with their mental health and need help in order to get better. Unfortunately, due to this stigma, many people who know they should be seeking help refuse to do so. The purpose of mental health day is to reduce this stigma and encourage help seeking behaviour. October 11 – Face Your Fears Day. Take a moment to consider what your life might be like if you conquered some of your greatest fears. What would you do differently? One of my favourite sayings is this: ‘Action without contemplation leads to repetition, contemplation with action is meaningless.’ Face Your Fears Day gives you the chance to stand up to your fears, overcome them, and seize the day. October 17 – Mulligan Day. This is a day to give yourself, or someone else, a second chance. The term Mulligan originates from informal games of golf where someone has played a rubbish shot and is allowed to replay it. Usually, this is allowed once every nine holes. Whether it is a relationship with a friend or loved one, an old hobby that you abandoned or a past mistake that needs rectifying, you can give it another go on Mulligan Day.

October 19 – Evaluate Your Life Day. At various times in our life, it makes sense to evaluate the progress we’ve made and the path we’re on. As we reflect, we may find that we don’t like where we are and want to make changes to move forward with our goals. Maybe we’re doing quite well and everything is moving along smoothly. However, most likely it will be somewhere in between. If we don’t take time to reflect and make changes, then we just tend to drift along, being blown in all directions by the opinions of others. Please refer back to my saying for Face Your Fears Day as it is also relevant here. October 29 – International Cat Day. Here we go again! Yet another Cat Day and the thing is, I can’t recall any Dog Days or Canary Days. Just who is in charge here? This day is to help stray cats find their forever home. Cats can lower your blood pressure, offer unconditional love (as long as you do what you’re told), companionship and many laughs. Perhaps you should stay off the internet if you don’t want to be overloaded with cuteness. As Charles Dickens said, “What greater gift than the love of a cat?” Actually, I can think of quite a few. October 30 – Create a Great Funeral Day. We all have to go at some stage but perhaps you’d like your funeral to be an occasion of celebration. No, not because you’re dead! It should be a celebration of the fact you were part of the lives of the significant people around you. Naturally, we miss family and friends when they depart this world and feel sad that they are no longer around to share our lives and this is fair enough. However, how more meaningful would your funeral be to everyone one involved, and this includes you, seeing as you’re the star of the show, if you had a hand in planning it beforehand? After all, it’s your funeral. - John Kriesfeld

Walkers Campbell, Ray and Kerrie Enjoying the Day

SHEPPARTON ADVENTURE CLUB Our latest mid-week walk was to Reef Hills State Park. Seventeen walkers gathered at the Reef Hills State Park, about 4km from Benalla, for the August outing. This very accessible park is a great local spot for activities such as bushwalking, bike riding, picnics and bird watching. After our usual routine of morning tea, we set off for a gentle 9km walk on well-made and well sign-posted gravel tracks. The sunny morning quickly turned cloudy and cooler but, apart from a few spots of rain, it stayed dry for the duration of the walk. We saw a mob of kangaroos, probably startled by the chatter of the group, bound past. A number of different birdcalls were heard, along with glimpses of birds among the trees and shrubs. Golden wattles provided a bright splash of yellow as we walked. Other wildflowers spotted included the ‘egg and bacon’ plant and hardenbergia but we were probably just a little early for the best of the wildflowers. The park is also known for Red Stringybark, Long Leaf box and Red Box and is a remnant of the original vegetation of the northern plains of Victoria. Lunch was enjoyed along the way and our leader, Kerrie, provided some information about the history of the park which was worked for reef and alluvial gold from 1860 to the early 1900s. We arrived back to the cars for the short drive into Benalla with plenty of time for coffee and chat at the very pleasant Art Gallery Café. - Karen Speedy

AROUND TATURA

District motorists on the Mooroopna-Wyuna Road will be treated to a pothole scarred surface for some time to come. Rodney Shire President, Cr Ian Coldwell, said last week motorists using the road could not expect any short-term relief from the present poor road conditions. Cr Coldwell was replying to a spate of complaints received by the council regarding the road. ***** Daryl Walker has been honoured by the Tatura Netball Association and made a Life Member. Daryl has had a long association with Tatura netball and his record will be difficult to beat. He has not missed a delegate’s association meeting since becoming a club representative in 1978. Daryl was elected president in 1980 and again in 1981 and was secretary from 1982 to 1989. ***** Murchison had a stunning 95-point victory over Girgarre in the KDL qualifying final at Avenel. Wayne Faramus, the Micky Conlan look-alike, along with coach Robert Walters and David Archibald, booted 17 goals between them as Murchison powered away from their disappointing rivals to earn a berth in the second semi-final against Avenel. ***** Plans are well underway for a Tatura and District Community Complex. The idea for a community complex came around in 1985 when a number of community service providers met with councillors to discuss the immediate needs for lack of their services. The complex concept means that the town has a viable and flexible integrated service network. ***** Tatura Football Club has endured a bleak season but it had double reason to celebrate in their last home and away match of the season. Two of its favourite sons, Alby Scrimizzi and Dene Archer lined up for their 100th game against Rochester. Scrimizzi 23, first pulled on the red, white and blue guernsey when he was 15. The nuggety ruck rover made his senior

debut in 1982 and has juggled his talents between the great Australian game and soccer. Archer, 24, has been at the club since the age of 11 and made his senior debut during the 1983 season. ***** Parking limits in the Tatura central business area will remain at two hours. Rodney Shire Council made this decision after some debate and consideration of letters in response to council’s request for comments. ***** Rodney Shire Council says its roads are too dangerous to allow Sun Tour cyclists to pedal over them in October. Councillors are worried that the potholes and other hazards could lead to a cyclist being thrown from his speeding machine and killed. The Vic Health Sun Tour organisers asked permission for the cyclists, some of the most experienced and hardened professional road riders, to use the Murchison-Tatura Road and then Ferguson Road into Tatura. ***** Two first year players have dominated Tatura Football Club’s best and fairest award. Gangly ruckman Mark Rijs won the award with 162 votes to add to the long list of prizes in the Kyabram District Football League. Rijs won the KDL McNamara Medal for the best and fairest player in the league in 1987 while playing for Murchison. Jodie Canavan finished second with 148 votes after a consistent year in the back pocket. ***** Tatura’s Anthony Hicks has a smile which has earned him a swag of baby titles, trophies and sashes. His latest triumph was a clean sweep of prizes in the Shepparton Baby Show held recently to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation. Apart from winning the trophy for the open age Prince of the Day Anthony also won the novelty champion baby section, second prize for having the nicest eyes, first prize for the cutest baby section and first prize in the Master Tiny Tot section. - Source: Tatura Guardian Newspaper

LEADING SCIENTISTS IN MURCHISON

Bubble Girl

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL Over the last few months, we have had many exciting learning opportunities at school ranging from camps, excursions, incursions and guests. The annual Science Week events included some exciting science experiments and culminated with the family science night presented by Twisted Science from Echuca. The scientists enthralled us with experiments that saw students enveloped by giant bubbles and chemical reactions that popped, banged and amazed. We know there are some budding scientists amongst us and we encourage the development of scientific and creative thinking. The Grade 6 students love visiting local industries and businesses on the Lions Club established, Opportunity Plus days. This term Mr Nihill’s class visited the sale yards in Shepparton, Hill Top Golf Club, a Tatura East orchard and Agriculture Victoria on Ferguson Road. At the orchard and Agriculture Victoria, they were fascinated to see how research is used to protect orchards from insect attack in our area. We have continued with our transition program for future Foundation students with visits to the local kindergartens. Our Grade 5 students are really looking forward to having their buddies allocated for 2020. Our annual tree planting day was supported by COGS and we had every student plant trees around three of our boundaries. Looking ahead, we are excited to start the playground development in our new grounds and are equally excited about planning out LARP and end of year activities which will come about all too soon! A reminder to 2020 Foundation students, we are keen to have all enrolments in by the end of September. Please contact us on 5824 1684 if you have a child starting school next year as our formal morning transition sessions start in early November. - Susanne Gill

Murchison will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the meteorite landing on the long weekend in September to coincide with the landing back in September, 1969. To celebrate this important milestone Murchison will host a number of leading scientists from around the world and from leading universities in Australia on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September from 1pm until 4pm at the Murchison Community Centre. Murchison will welcome Philipp Heck, Chicago Field Museum, Mike Zolensky, NASA, Trevor Ireland, ANU, Warwick Holmes from European Space Agency, Phil Bland, Curtin University, Craig O’Neil, Macquarie University, Gretchen Benedix, Curtin University, Martin Van Kranendonk, University NSW, Andy Gleadow, University of Melbourne and Dermot Henry, Museums Victoria. Murchison Historical Society President Kay Ball said, “We have a high calibre of guest speakers coming to Murchison to talk about the science related to Murchison Meteorite as part of our 50th Anniversary celebration of the meteorite landing. These speakers are professors and doctors in their specialised fields and have been chosen for their ability to convey exciting facts in everyday language. So, if anyone is interested in geology, meteoritics and about space, I encourage them to come to Murchison. But the best bit is, entry is free for school children and gold coin donation for adults. Make sure you have this date in your calendar to come to Murchison on September 28 and 29 from 1pm until 4pm to hear these amazing speakers.” For full event details and guest speaker’s bios visit: Murchisonmeteorite. com.au

Oscar at the National Gallery

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL Recently we visited the Terracotta Warrior exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne with Zeerust, Wunghnu and WaaiaYalca South Primary Schools. While the younger students got to look around the gallery, the older students attended an information session about the warriors. There are eight warriors on display, each one having a different purpose. We learnt that 2000 warriors have been excavated and it is thought that another 6000 are still buried in China. All of the warriors are unique with individual facial features including wrinkles. Along with the warriors at the gallery, there is also an exhibition of new works by one of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists, Cai GuoQiang. Cai uses traditional Chinese materials of paper, porcelain and silk combined with gunpowder explosions to construct his art works. The most impressive piece of Cai’s art was the bird display which consisted of 10000 individually hung porcelain birds. The birds had been blasted with gunpowder as a form of painting. Annual Melbourne Shopping Tour: This year’s Melbourne shopping tour will be held on Saturday, November 9 and everybody is welcome to attend. If you had picked answer (a) each time you would have least got four correct. 3-5. Bland Street. Well done! You are the person that everybody else measures themselves against. You are the rock in the ocean of knowledge. No, I don’t know what it means either but it sounds good. 6-7. Above Average (sort of). Well done on another abnormal performance. According to the Oxford dictionary, you are exceptional, irregular and deviating from type. Ask your friends if that sounds like you. 8-9. Smarty Pants. You’re among the best of the best although, unfortunately, you’re not the very best. You shouldn’t have changed your mind on that wrong answer. Always trust your initial instinct. 10. Genius. Words can’t express my admiration for your achievement. That’s it, there’s nothing more to say.

MURCHISON PRIMARY SCHOOL We, Murchison Primary, held our annual House Athletics Sports Day on Monday, September 9. It was sunny and then it rained. It was sunny again and then it rained again. However, this did not slow down the students nor dampen their spirits! Both teams, Waranga and Goulburn, put their best feet forward and it was wonderful to see so many students have a go at events. They hurdled, jumped, threw and ran with gusto. It culminated with the team relays. The cheering could be heard from one end of the Murchison Football ground to the other! Parents, siblings and other family members threw their support behind the students and braved the wild weather, a big thanks to all those that came down. Funds were raised for the State School Spectacular team with a very delicious BBQ. The day ended with the walk back to school with our footsteps a bit slower and heavier than the walk in the morning! What a day!! - Elly French

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS This year Sacred Heart School, Tatura entered two teams into the Goulburn Valley Tournament of the Minds. This was the third year that our school has participated in TOM and second year in a row that we have a team representing the GV at the Victorian State Final! Team 1 included students from grades 3 and 4 – Sophia Speddia, Kane Organ, Cameron Dundon, Sam Carbone, Miriam Ford, Lila Plunkett and Harry Cameron. We chose the Social Sciences challenge. We were awarded Honours for our performance and were selected as a ‘Wildcard’ entry into the Victorian State Final. The TOM team represented the GV at the State Final last Sunday. The students demonstrated incredible levels of creativity and used their various talents to their advantage. Their fabulous performance wowed the audience. The team performed with passion and represented Sacred Heart with integrity. Team 2 was a mix of Grade 5/6 students – Tarah Argus, Xavier Black, Abbi Gilders, Seth Hutchison, Sophie Lewis, Cadel Nicholson and Xavier Powles. The challenge we chose was The Arts which involved us rewriting the ‘Wizard of Oz’ based somewhere in Victoria. Part of this challenge involved creating two original songs, making two backdrops, creating costumes and props and we had to write our own script with all of our own characters. It was a wonderful yet challenging experience for us, but we really enjoyed working together to come up with our solution. After finishing this Long-Term Challenge, all teams also had to do a Spontaneous Challenge. This is where we have six minutes to solve a challenge and then two minutes to present it to the judges. Both challenges are student led and organised without any assistance from teachers or parents. We feel that both our performances were fantastic and we were awarded Honours at the conclusion of the day. We had a lot of fun as well. - Mrs Michelle Cameron and Miss Cassie Worm
