TATURA CREATIVE ARTISTS Head down to The Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum at the corner of Ross and Hogan Streets to see a display of artwork by various members of the Tatura Creative Artists group. The exhibition, which was to be held earlier in the year but was delayed due to COVID restrictions, is now open Monday to Friday 1pm to 3pm and on weekends from 2pm to 4pm. There are over 60 works on display including mixed medium, acrylic, watercolour, pastel, textile art and photography. The majority of the works are for sale. Tatura Creative Artists has 15 members and 13 of them have contributed to the Art Exhibition. Tatura Creative Artists is an extension of the Rodney Arts Society which started in 1974. Some 10 years ago the group decided on a name change, registering as the Tatura Creative Artists, this attracted citizens to venture into different fields of art. A friendly atmosphere has developed where visiting artists are welcomed to run workshops in silk paper making, felting and many other techniques. The Tatura Creative Artists invite everyone to take the opportunity to attend their Exhibition and thank the Tatura Museum for providing such a nice venue for their display.

INTERNATIONAL DAIRY WEEK IS BACK IN 2022! After being unable to hold Tatura’s biggest event in 2021 due to Covid, the new owners of the event have informed the Tatura Football Netball Club (TFNC), that IDW will go ahead next year from Sunday 16th to Thursday 20th of January 2022 at Tatura Park. Numbers of entries have still to be confirmed, but due to the easing of restrictions between states (WA being an exception), and international visitors, the organizers are confident the event will be successful. The new owners of IDW have signed an agreement with TFNC to continue with the catering as they have done for the past 20 plus years. This reflects the confidence they have in the TFNC providing fantastic service and food to the many visitors that visit our town. This service is due to the many volunteers who provide exceptional support to the TFNC subcommittee responsible for the organization of the catering plus other support activities. Over the next few week’s members of the subcommittee will be contacting all past volunteers to ask for their assistance in many of the services the TFNC provide which include: •

Preparation of sandwiches and rolls

Cooking and serving breakfasts at Wilson Hall

Preparation, cooking and serving hot and cold food during the day at Wilson Hall

Preparation and serving for special functions

Preparation, cooking and serving breakfasts, lunches, and evening meals at Ballantyne Centre

Bar service

Logistical support prior, during and after the event

Workforce coordination and rostering

Preparation and maintaining floats, invoicing, banking

Cleaning of stalls and grounds

Note: No gatekeeping services will be required in 2022. As many of our volunteers have been assisting over many years and are getting a little tired, I would like to encourage any new members of the Tatura community to get involved. It is a great way to meet many local and interesting people from around the town and even from overseas. Shifts are both during the day and at night, are generally not that long and flexibility can be assured. If you have never been involved in IDW and would like to offer your services, please call me on 0408335284 and I will direct you to the relevant group organizer who will provide you with any queries you may have regarding the specific role you would like to play. The Lions Club of Tatura commenced a new initiative on Saturday 6th November to encourage local shopping with the help of our local traders. This idea proved very popular with many local residents participating on the day with an eventual winner who received a $40.00 shopping voucher at Tatura Family Butchers. We would also like to thank Ritchie’s IGA for making their facilities & BBQ available. The plan is to hold a monthly BBQ & Wheel of Fortune event. The idea is very simple and will work as follows:• For a donation of $2.00 you will be part of a 1 in 50 chance of winning a voucher to the value of at least $40.00 with one of our supporting local Traders. • Vouchers for ‘meat trays’ or other possible prizes will be announced on the day and will be redeemable directly with the Traders involved. • If you cannot wait until the full wheel is ready to spin, we will be noting your contact details to arrange your winning voucher is received. • Feel free to purchase more than one ticket to increase your chances to win, in the knowledge that all funds raised will be distributed locally in Tatura Lions Project work. • If you are keen to wait for the ‘Spin of the Wheel’ why not also invest in a traditional Lions sausage from the BBQ.

100 LAP CHALLENGE 2022 On Saturday February 26th February 2022 the annual 100 lap challenge will be held at the Tatura swimming pool. The event has run for 26 years and originated from a bet in the pub about who could swim 100 laps. The event raises funds for the Tatura Hospital & Parkvilla Nursing Home. Over the years the event has evolved to include teams as well as individual swimmers. Several teams from the community, service clubs and families now enter each year along with the stalwart individuals who always swim the 100 laps. Each swimmer or team is expected to raise a minimum $100 sponsorship. There are no costs involved in staging the event and all funds go directly to the Hospital & Parkvilla. Over the years $74200 has been raised, recently funds from this event have provided new beds, new Ventolin pumps, a piano, an oxygen concentrator, bladder scanner and refurbishment of the front garden & fencing to improve the amenity for Parkvilla residents. Anyone who would like to participate can contact Geoff Lipshut on 0417134929 or Gary Whyte on 58241461

CONGRATULATIONS TO NL DRAINAGE Local business, NL Drainage, owned and operated by Brad and Lou Wereszczuk was recently awarded Employer of the Year by the Civil Contractors Federation of Victoria (CCF). Due to COVID restrictions the award ceremony was televised and the NL Drainage team gathered at their depot to watch the presentation and to celebrate the award. The nomination and award was based around a call to action from WorkSafe Victoria following several engulfment fatalities in Victoria. NL Drainage identified a need for training workers in regional Victoria and, working with agencies like Ambulance Victoria, SES, CFA and Wangaratta Search & Rescue among others, hosted and ran a simulated trench collapse/engulfment demonstration day at their work depot. Other contractors and interested parties also attended. They have plans to do a more extensive onsite demonstration in 2022 as there is a real need for training in these situations in regional Victoria. NL Drainage carries out civil construction and earthmoving works for local government agencies and many other groups. They proudly completed the underground water and sewage infrastructure at the new SAM building on behalf of the City of Greater Shepparton. They have been based in Tatura for around 28 years, starting in Ross Street. After considerable difficulty in finding available industrial zoned land in Tatura they eventually settled in Cussen Street and built their office and shed there some three years ago. Managing Director, Brad Wereszczuk, has spent his working life in Civil Construction and is passionate about encouraging young people to enter the industry. Over recent years several employees have been recognised for their work and have won awards. Tim Baker won Apprentice of the Year in both 2017 and 2018 and is now a Site Supervisor with NL Drainage. This year Isaiah Spencer received the Geoff Brown Encouragement Award. This prestigious award is named for one of the founding members of the CCF. Brad is also on the Board of the CCF and is a voice for regional Victoria in the Civil Construction industry. Brad and Lou are extremely proud that NL Drainage recently received third party certification to AS/NZS 45001:2018 (OHS) Standard. Lois Orr

GV TREE GROUP Melaleuca Spathulata The pom pom’s are out. Melaleuca Spathulata is one of the smallest of the Melaleuca’s. Its common name is Pom Pom Honey Myrtle named after the flowers. The specimen we have growing at the nursery is covered with so many of these pink ‘pom pom’s’ it’s hard to see the leaves. This bush grows to about 1.5 meters tall with dark green leaves and pale stems and branches. They have a papery texture similar to a prickly paperbark but much smaller and grow in a bit of a contorted dense arrangement. Being indigenous to southern Western Australia it prefers a drier sandy or gravelly soil but does still grow well in heavier soils as long as they don’t get waterlogged. It can be a little sensitive to frost when young but tolerant when established. At the Nursery propagation for the upcoming season is well underway and our busiest time of the year has arrived as we begin to prick out seedlings into tubes. With Christmas fast approaching we still have some plants available for sale. We have potted up our Banksias which would make a great Kris Kringle present, gift for staff or something for that difficult person to buy for. Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year to all out customers and readers from all the volunteers at the GV Tree Group. Good growing Ash

TATURA BOWLS CLUB

Tatura Bowls Club - Various Covid restrictions in place since March 2020 have had lawn bowlers and the bowls club facilities under severe restrictions. Come the first week of November in 2021 and much joy and positivity exists with the club now operational and pennant back in play albeit with some minor restrictions still to be adhered to. On the past sports scene, it has been an arduous and difficult time with limited and restricted time on the greens and no competitive matches permitted. Fully vaccinated bowlers have now commenced the delayed pennant competition and playing in tournaments is now permitted. Last season's Tatura Hill Top coach Lee Farrell, a resident of the Northern Territory departed at the completion of last season's pennant completion with severe covid restrictions potentially in place if he remained in Victoria and away from his home state. Even then on his and wife Catherine's return to the Northern Territory last year, they were under compulsory quarantine for a fortnight. Consequently, with covid issues still prevalent throughout Australia and an uncertain pennant commencement time this year, the coach and former locals Jock and Louise Hicks decided not to depart from the Territory to rejoin the Tatura Hill Top bowling group. Local Tatura Hill Top bowler, Brendon Boyd has taken on the coach's role and is looking for the combine to have a positive season.

Throughout the Goulburn Valley pennant competition there has been some movement of players to other clubs and some bowlers "new to Bowls" joining up, and Tatura Hill Top is among one of these clubs experiencing this. Unfortunately, the Goulburn Valley and Murray Associations is finding that the numbers involved in bowls has declined since the Covid pandemic with many bowlers not returning to the sport and clubs are subsequently reducing their bowling divisions. With the long term lockdowns for the past year, there have possibly been many breaking out and seeing the country and travelling to visit family and friends. Tatura Bowls club has listed their season's club events on the noticeboard and members are encouraged to have their matches played promptly. There is an element of urgency to complete the club Championship Singles and Pairs events asap, for the winners will be required to go onto play at an Association level. Club Notice: Tatura Bowls Club's Christmas Dinner and Members Draw will be held at the club on Friday 3rd December from 6.30pm. Members and guests are requested to advise of their attendance or non-attendance on the noticeboard, please. John Crilly

THE BUSH IN BLOOM

Caladenia Major

Caladenia Tentaculata

Calochilus Robertsonii

Thelymitra Magacalyptra

While Tatura offers little by way of native bushland, the nearby Rushworth State Forest and Heathcote-Graytown National Park provide ample opportunity for those seeking a bit of forest to explore. Spring is the ideal time to visit the forest for there are many wildflowers, including native orchids (our particular interest), peas, wattles, grevilleas and heaths on show there. Recent years have not been kind to the area, with prolonged dry weather making plants look parched and dusty, and the ground crisp with dried leaves under foot. Smaller annuals, such as the ground orchids, often fail to appear at all. Given the wetter conditions over the past winter and early spring, we ventured optimistically to Rushworth in mid-October (after lockdown!). The bush still appeared dry although new growth was evident everywhere, and a walk was soon rewarded with few things in flower, including waxlips (Caladenia major), the scented sun orchid (Thelymitra megcalyptra), purple beard orchid (Calochilus robertsonii) and a few spider orchids (Caladenia tentaculata). Hopefully continued rains will produce an even better display next spring. For those interested in exploring, the Rushworth Flora Reserve (behind the hospital), the area around Whroo, and the Mount Black quarry are good places to start. Bill Ashcroft

CRIME PREVENTION

With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer

Before you leave! We have a two pronged reason to be away from our home over the next month. 1. After 18 months of cancelling and delaying travel plans due to COVID movement restrictions, travel has freed up. 2. It is Summer. It is the holiday season. It is the opportunity to visit family for festive celebrations. The holiday season should be a time to relax and celebrate with family and friends. However, it is important to be proactive about keeping your home and community safe. Especially if you are going away. Burglars will target homes if they think nobody is home. Vacant homes area a soft target for criminals and we should remain diligent to reduce the risk of being a victim of property crime over this time of year. Even if you remain home ‘holding the fort’, your neighbourhood will need you to keep an eye out for any opportunistic thieves moving through your patch. Vacant community buildings such as schools should be included in this and any suspicious behaviour reported to police. Call Triple Zero if police need to attend – or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 if you have information that police can use to make our community safer. Crime Prevention Tips Before You Leave; Appearance: Make it look like someone is home. Arrange a housesitter or ask a trusted neighbour to help. Divert mail. Have letterboxes cleared and newspapers collected. Arrange for bins to be put out and returned inside. Maintain lawns and gardens. Turn down the volume of telephones. Set up timers on a radio and lighting. Have the trusted neighbour park a vehicle in your driveway. Invite the neighbour to use your clothesline and backyard. Do not post details of holiday on social media –wait until you return home. Lock all doors and windows. Install window locks if you don’t have them. Are your existing door deadlocks still secure? Do not forget to lock up sheds after all your tools and valuables are put away. Improve the security of your home. Have a wander around your property and consider security from a criminal’s point of view. Consider CCTV and alarms. Secure valuables by keeping them in a safe place. This may mean leaving your most valuable items at another location while away. A secure floor safe is another consideration. Firearms. If your house is vacant for an extended period, consider arranging temporary firearm storage at a Licence Firearm dealer. If intending to be away from your home for greater than a couple of weeks, I recommend that you register your Absence from Residence online. This step should be considered an addition to other security steps. To do this scan the QR code;

For more detailed crime prevention information and tips please scan this QR Code;

Once you have your property secure, head off and have a great holiday. I urge everyone to drive carefully. Reduce driver distraction and allow plenty of time to arrive safely. Enjoy a well-deserved catch up with your family and friends. We look forward to 2022 with confidence. Glenn Gibson Crime Prevention Officer - Greater Shepparton Police Service Area

INTERESTING CHRISTMAS FACTS All the gifts in the Twelve Days of Christmas would equal 364 gifts. In A.D. 350, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birthday of Christ. The traditional three colours of Christmas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty. Bolivians celebrate Misa del Gallo or ‘Mass of the Rooster’ on Christmas Eve. Some people bring roosters to the midnight mass, a gesture that symbolizes the belief that a rooster was the first animal to announce the birth of Jesus. In Poland, spiders or spider webs are common Christmas trees decorations because according to legend, a spider wove a blanket for Baby Jesus. In fact, Polish people consider spiders to be symbols of goodness and prosperity at Christmas.

SACRED HEART YEAR 6 GRADUATING CLASS After seven years of Primary School, our Year Six students have begun to prepare for their next phase of learning - the transition into their chosen high schools. They have been a truly resilient and outstanding group. They have experienced the ups and downs of COVID and Remote Learning and taken disappointments of cancelled excursions, missed camps and many opportunities in their stride. We would like to commend all the grade 6s on continually rising to the occasion and doing their best in such adverse times. With each setback, these truly remarkable students have done what was asked of them, with a smile on their faces and a spring in their step. Our Year Six leaders have readily modelled to the Sacred Heart School community the qualities of being responsible, respectful and resilient. When leading assemblies they strived to be their best and as team leaders they took up responsibilities in the areas of Sports, Communication, P.B.I.S, Sustainability, Arts, Tech Angels and Social Justice. Now that we prepare to farewell our departing Year Six Graduating Class, we take this opportunity to wish them all the best and know that with the love and the strength of God by their side, they will flourish to be outstanding citizens within our global world. Auguri and best wishes to you all. Dom Poppa, Emily Slaughter, Cath Basile and Melissa Connors.

Streets of our town RODNEY COURT What’s in a name? Well in the case of Rodney Court it is far more than meets the eye. In 1985 Arthur Knee with the Tatura Historical Society prepared an article on street names in Tatura which explained that “the Rodney Court subdivision was carried out by a small group of Tatura citizens, who chose the name Rodney Court as appropriate, Tatura being the centre of the Shire of Rodney, which in turn took its name from the County of Rodney, Lord Rodney being an Admiral of the English fleet at the time that the rural area was being established”. It is quite fitting that this very first edition of Streets of Our Town feature has that historical connection. Laurina Baer has been a resident of Rodney Court 54 years. Laurina and her husband Rudi built their house in 1967 on what was virtual

Hair & Beauty

farm land. There was no road, no footpath; they came much later. Gradually over the next few years Rodney Court was filled with houses and young families. At one time there were about 20 children growing up in Rodney Court. Then they left to make their own lives and families and for quite a few years there were no children. Rudi Baer was the manager of the ready- mix concrete plant in Tatura for many years, first owned by the Pigatto Bros from Kyabram and later by Boral. Laurina came to Tat when she was 16. Her father was Senior Constable Wally Gale. The Kirby family are more recent residents of Rodney Court and as Pauline Kirby explains “we’ve only been here 17 years”. The family lived in Rushworth but were involved with the Tatura Football Netball Club and because Pauline had a position at Sacred Heart School they decided they wanted to find a house to buy in Tatura and were lucky enough to land in Rodney Court. Pauline explained that there are 7 houses in Rodney Court and all the families are great neighbours. “There are three families with young children who give us great pleasure scooting around. We all chat at times, check out gardens and keep an eye out”. A highlight

for the families of Rodney Court has been the annual Christmas Court BBQ, which included neighbours from Galloway Street and Hamilton Court. The families gathered together (before COVID) for a wonderful time, Santa came and lollies were handed out. Awesome!! Hopefully they can get together to have this years’ party. Warren and Marg Jenkin are also long-term residents of Rodney Court having lived there for 47 years. They are definitely not gypsies. During all that time Marg and Warren never felt unsafe or thought of leaving and they think it is a great place for kids to grow up, as it was for their boys. Remember we started by asking what’s in a name? How about this for coincidence? Warren Jenkin worked for Rodney Shire for 30 years or so as Payroll Officer and Cost Clerk. And not only that Arthur Knee was his boss for most of that time. “Best boss I ever had” Warren said. Well, that’s it for Rodney Court, NEXT UP is Coombs Road. So come on all you Coombs Road people, let’s see if you can surpass Rodney Court by sending your contributions to info@tatbulletin.com.au

HARSTON CWA The Harston branch is happy to be meeting again after such a stressful year, it often appeared no one quiet knew if we could meet up face to face or only hold zoom meetings. With now 90% of Victorians fully vaccinated, those who are have nothing to fear from the other 10% who perhaps cannot be. TATURA MUSEUM MUSINGS With a big hurray the Museum has finally opened albeit in COVID safe mode. To comply with GSCC directive all staff and visitors to the museum must be double vaccinated. The Tatura Creative Artists exhibition is now able to be viewed and well worth inspection in the main exhibition gallery. On Sunday 14th November a large group of Templers and friends together with a German Embassy representative, gathered at the Tatura German War Graves Cemetery for the a n n u a l Vo l k s t r a u e r t a g (Memorial Service). After luncheon, they met at the museum and viewed a video compiled my Mrs Doris Frank celebrating the 80th year since internment. Doris’ father Lothar Bohmer who died 2011, was a POW in Camp 13 where he spent 5 years, and developed strong friendships with members of the Kormoran crew. The adjacent photo is a group of Templers who visited Camp 3 that day. One man had arrived as a 3 month-old baby, one was born in the camp hospital and two had parents held in Camp 3. during the World War 2. The Tatura Steam Engine committee met recently and discussed the suggestions submitted to them for a suitable position in town for the Steam Engine. One position is standing out, and the committee are anxious to examine all regulations as to its suitability with the GSCC.

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, November/December 2021 - Page 19 It’s been a busy month here at The Cubby, with attendance nearing capacity, there have been lots of new faces and new friends to be made. As the weather has got warmer, we have been spending a lot more time outside which has been a nice change. The children have enjoyed setting up a new obstacle course, with the design getting grander and grander every day. A new Lego set generously donated by the staff has been greatly enjoyed by the older children, while the younger ones have been enjoying fresh strawberries that they have growing outside. We want to wish all our families the best over the festive session, and a sad good bye to our children who are moving on to school next year. As some children move on in their learning journey, this creates spaces for new children at our service. We are now accepting new enrolments and bookings for next year. Our opening days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:00am-2:00pm. Our service is an approved Child Care Subsidy Provider or families can elect just to pay fee for service. TOOLAMBA WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILING

Deputy Mayor and Mayor with Toolamba Primary School student leaders

Cr Rob Priestly Mayor, Mary Coad (Sec Toolamba Rec Reserve Cttee) Bill McDonald, Deputy Mayor Cr Anthony Brophy, Cr Geoff Dobson

Remembrance Day this year was very special in Toolamba this year with the Mayor of Greater Shepparton City Council, Kim O’Keeffe unveiling of a new war memorial at the Community Centre on the afternoon of Thursday 11 November. The event with master of ceremonies Bill McDonald, was well attended by local community members, the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and several councillors, representatives from the Tatura, Shepparton and Murchison RSL and the student leadership group from the Toolamba Primary School. The unveiling was followed by afternoon tea provided by the Lions Club of Toolamba. While there are honour rolls in the hall remembering those who served in WW1and WW11 there has not been a focal point for the community to commemorate the ANZAC Day memorial services facilitated by the Lions Club of Toolamba over many years. The Recreation Reserve Committee saw an opportunity to erect a memorial structure and looked at many examples and possible structures, finally settling on a design representing those who served. The Lions Club of Toolamba agreed to be the applicant organisation for a Federal Government Saluting their Service Grant. Council agreed to the erection of the war memorial on the site and provided a letter of support as well as advice from their Parks and Gardens staff on suitable plants for the garden area behind the memorial. There were many letters of support from Toolamba community organisations as well as the Tatura RSL. The steel structure was created from an artistic design provided by the Recreation Reserve Committee to Dow Engineering of Dookie and Rod Dow very skilfully created the memorial. Rod also gave the steel a rusted effect and sealed it so that it would remain in the same condition. The concrete base for the structure was completed by local contractor Floorcrete, local resident Sally Moseley assisted with garden plants and the Tatura RSL donated the plaque at the front of the memorial. This memorial will be a very visible reminder to the community of those who have served Australia during conflicts throughout the world. The success of the project is due to the support of the community and coordinated effort of the Lions Club of Toolamba and the Toolamba Recreation Reserve Committee.

HARSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL This term is flying past and soon we will be at the end of another year. At Harston PS we have lots happening and last Friday we welcomed Merrigum PS and Dhurringile PS to our school for a fun filled Science Day. All the students had a fantastic time exploring electricity-switches and circuits, wind tunnels and robotics – digital literacy. Below is a statement from each student about their favourite part of the day. • On Friday in Science I was doing the robots called Spheros. The iPads connect to the sphero. I had lots of fun! – Erik • On Friday we did science. My favourite part was the wind tunnels. I threw the paper inside the tunnel and it flew up and out. It was funny! – Elliot • On Friday our school had a science day. My favourite thing was the wind tunnels. I made a hot air balloon with a trash bag, bowl and duct tape. I had a great day! – Brian • On Science day I liked the spheros because they change colour. I couldn’t keep track of them, they were too fast! – Liam • My favourite science activity was spheros because you can code them with the iPad, they change colour and you can drive them. Dhurringile PS, Merrigum PS and Brett and Emma, the science people joined us. It was satisfying to drive them! – Halen • On Friday other schools came to my school for a science day. My favourite part was the electricity – switches and circuits because we had a challenge and the challenge was to turn the lights on. – Zalea • On Friday Liam and I programmed the Spheros. Liam liked to chase the sphero. It was funny! I liked to program the sphero. – Torri • On Friday Dhurringile PS and Merrigum PS came to Harston and we had a huge science day with Brett and Emma from the Bendigo Discovery Centre. • Our First workshop was about electricity, we all had to get a partner and we got a light and a battery that we had to connect with a wire to turn on the light. • Our second workshop was about wind tunnels, we had to make fake prototypes and see if they would fly, hover or sink and most of them sunk. • Our last workshop was my favourite because we got to play with robots called spheros and we had to program them to get from one spot to another. – Harmony We welcome any prospective enrolments in Foundation and other year levels for 2022 and encourage you to come and have a look at our school and see what we have to offer. Our transition program has begun and will run from 9:00-11:00 every Friday until the end of November. This will give your pre prep child an insight into school life and we will spend the time doing various activities as an introduction to school. If you are interested in this program or would just like to bring your child along to see how we do things and have a look at our school, you are most welcome. If you would like any information on our school or an enrolment pack, please contact the school on 03 58548317 any time during school hours. Nicolle Answer Acting Principal

THE 12 LAWS OF KARMA Most people will have heard of karma and the fact that there is good karma and bad karma, but before we delve into the 12 Laws of Karma, we need to understand what karma actually is. The word ‘karma’ translates as ‘actions’ and includes our thoughts, words and deeds. Everything is energy, including our thoughts and emotions. It is our thoughts that control our lives. Our thoughts become words which in turn lead to actions. Our actions become habits and our habits define our character. Everything we do creates a corresponding energy that comes back to us in some form, hence the old saying, ‘What goes around, comes around’. The other saying, ‘Karma’s a bitch’, is equally valid. Therefore, everything we do creates either a positive or negative consequence. It is important to understand that the laws of karma refer to cause and effect and not reward and punishment. We are all on a spiritual journey whether we realise it or not, and the 12 Laws of Karma are there to help us successfully navigate the path. Each month I will examine and describe four of these laws. 1. The Great Law (or the law of cause and effect). When most people talk about karma they are usually referring to this particular law. Although the concept of karma was formalised in India, most other societies and cultures held similar beliefs. The King James version of the Bible put forward the concept that ‘as you sow, so shall you reap.’ Whatever you do unto others will eventually be done unto you. To receive happiness, peace, love, and friendship, one must be happy, peaceful, loving and a true friend. Whatever you put out into the Universe through your thoughts, words and actions, will eventually come back to you. 2. The Law of Creation. This law emphasises that life doesn’t just happen to us. To make things happen in your life, you need to take action, instead of waiting for something to magically come your way. You attract what you are, not what you want. We need to be accountable and seize the ideas and opportunities that come to us. You may need to consider asking yourself what you can release in order to create space for the thing you desire to show up. Consider how you can use your skills, talents and strengths to create something that not only benefits you, but others too.

It is also important to remember that you eventually become what you continue to surround yourself with so make sure these are aligned with where you want to be. Work towards improving yourself because only you are responsible for what happens to you. 3.The Law of Humility. What you resist, persists. Be humble enough to accept that your current reality is the result of your past actions. In order to tackle problems and find solutions, we first have to admit that we have such problems and challenges. You can’t change a negative situation without first coming to terms with it. Until that happens, you continue to build up negative energy against it and this energy resides within you. Assess everything in your life, both the positives and the negatives. Once you accept the reality of where you are at, you will find the strength to make the necessary changes. 4. The Law of Growth. Growth starts within us. If you want to grow and make your visions and dreams a reality, you have to realise that your inner life controls your outer world. Therefore, to positively shape the world around you, you need to start with yourself. Your thoughts become what you act upon and your actions frame your world. To change your actions, you need to change your thoughts. Negative thoughts will create a negative environment while positive thinking will build a positive world. The Law of Growth also looks at things you can’t control and how you deal with accepting this fate. Ultimately, your focus should be on you, not trying to control the people or things around you. The Serenity Prayer is a great example of this. God grant me the serenity to the accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And the wisdom to know the difference. A good place to start is with how you see yourself. In order to grow, you need to forgive yourself for past failures and transgressions. If you are not your own best friend, then there’s a good chance you’re in bad company. Remember, where ever you go, there you will be, so you may as well enjoy your own company. John Kriesfeld

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle

“I cannot wait to hear how your interview went Merle,” Agnes said as she plonked her bags down on the floor with a thud and then dropped herself heavily into the chair. She was taking up so much room with her scattered bags I was worried someone was going to trip over them. “Before we start Agnes, maybe you should push a few of your bags under the table or people are going to stand on them.” Agnes looked at me vaguely, which was nothing new, and then absently shoved some bags around with her feet. She hardly improved the situation but I had lost interest by then. I also noticed her hair was unusually out of place but I let that go. “So first of all, Merle, did you get the job?” Agnes asked as she stopped kicking her bags. “I am happy to say that I did get the job Agnes. In fact, I would go as far as to say I was an excellent choice. A stand up, I think they say.” “Oh yay,” said Agnes clapping her little hands like a child. “Yes, well I will tell you all about it, but first let’s order our afternoon tea.” Once we had done that, I proceeded to tell Agnes about my interview. “I went in and the lady told me all about the job and then looked at me earnestly and said, “You do know that we require a mature aged person for this job?” “I let out a little giggle and said, yes well I think I may just be eligible on that note.” “Oh yes, well and truly,” she replied. “I just wanted to make sure you knew we were being inclusive and diverse by employing someone aged.” “I can’t say I was flattered about the ‘well and truly’ Agnes, let alone the ‘aged’, but I nodded politely. with people. Ha! Can you imagine Agnes? If only she knew me then she wouldn’t need to ask. We both know I am very popular and have a high standing in the community, and I told her as much.” It was then as Agnes sat beaming at me from across the table, I noticed something in her teeth. “Agnes, you have something in your teeth and we have not even eaten yet. I must say you look quite dishevelled today. I am surprised you did not check yourself in the mirror before you left the house. Very unsightly indeed Agnes. It’s quite difficult for me to concentrate on my story while looking at you in this state.” She hurriedly fossicked around in her handbag and dragged out her crinkled hanky and began vigorously rubbing at her teeth. For a moment I thought they might come flying out of her mouth and land on the table. “How about you go to the bathroom and tidy up in there Agnes. I will mind your bags,” I said to her as I grimaced a little bit. Off she went as I shook my head. Agnes was behaving stranger than usual today. “There you go,” she said as she sat back down not quite as heftily as the first time. “Do I look better now?” She had wetted down her hair and I dare not look at her teeth. “Much better,” I replied. “Now let me finish my story. I told the interview lady, Sally was her name, that I am very patient, understanding, considerate and all of those sorts of things. She did look impressed I must say.” “And she believed you?” said Agnes, looking somewhat amazed. Well, of course she did,” I said.

“Yes, yes Merle. I just meant that she did not ask to check references, that’s all I meant.” “There was clearly no need. She said it all sounded fine to her. They phoned me the same day to say I had the job. I actually felt relieved although I knew the job was always going to be mine. I am an excellent choice after all. I am going in for a bit of training next week.” I stopped and looked at Agnes. “Now before I go on, what on earth is in all of those bags?” Agnes fidgeted nervously with her hanky. “Well,” she said, “I’ll just come right out and say it, I have left Fred. These are some of my personal items and I was going to ask if I could stay over for a couple of nights.” I was actually lost for words. “I don’t know what to say Agnes,” I eventually spluttered. Why do people always have to steal the limelight? There I was having such an adventure and now Agnes does this to me. Can someone please explain? Anyone?

KANGAROO PAW Last year I received a kangaroo paw from the Tatura Community House as part of their support during Covid. It sat on my kitchen bench for ages and I almost threw it out. I planted it in the front yard not really expecting it to survive. I was also convinced it would never flower. As you can see I was wrong. Julie

CHRISTMAS JOKES I asked my wife what she wanted for Christmas and she said nothing would make her happier than a diamond necklace, so I gave her nothing. The three phases of man: he believes in Santa Claus, he doesn’t believe in Santa Claus, he is Santa Claus. I bought my son a refrigerator for Christmas. I can’t wait to see his face light up when he opens it.

Your Highness. I’m only here because I was summoned. And besides, you can’t put a monetary value on a principle.” The judge glanced at his clerk as he slowly sighed. “A principle, I see. Alright Mr Ramsbottom, let’s get on with this. Why are you refusing to pay this fine?” “Because it’s clearly not mine. The library is fining me for a book that I never borrowed. If you want my opinion ..” “The court is not interested in opinions,” the judge haughtily replied, “so let’s stick to the facts Mr Ramsbottom.” “Those are the facts,” I said. “I’m being fined for something I didn’t do and I’m refusing to pay it as a matter of principle.” “Librarians are among the most hard-working and efficient members of our society,” said the judge grandly as his voice took on loftier tones. “The library system, based on barcode scans, is virtually infallible so it is the court’s opinion that the error must be yours and that you should therefore end this ridiculous charade and pay the fine.” “If your opinion is correct,” I replied sarcastically, “then there is only one conclusion that can be drawn. The council is obviously issuing fraudulent fines and they should be the ones facing this court because there is no way on God’s earth that I borrowed that book.” The judge scratched his chin thoughtfully before turning back to his clerk. “Do we have the name of this book?” “Yes Your Honour,” replied the clerk as he stood up and consulted his paperwork. “The book was called, ‘A Whirlwind Romance.' There was a muted gasp from the audience and Kylie slowly stood up and raised her hand. “Your Honour, may I say something?’ “No you may not,” he replied firmly. “We are not asking for corroborating witnesses or statements of character, good, bad or otherwise, and especially not from somebody who hasn’t been sworn in, so please sit down madam and control yourself.” “But your Honour,” replied Kylie. “No buts,” interjected the judge angrily. “One more word and I’ll have you thrown out on your butt, now sit down.” “Good old Kylie,” I thought as I watched her slowly subside back onto her seat. “Standing up for me in my moment of need.” “There is another matter that needs to be addressed by this court,” said the judge as he looked at me sternly. “According to the sheriff’s report, you threatened him with a dangerous weapon in order to prevent him from carrying out his duties.” I couldn’t help myself, I laughed. “It was a trowel Your Lordship. I’d been gardening when he turned up.” “You can still have someone’s eye out with a trowel,” intoned the judge. “I’m sure I wouldn’t like to be stabbed with one.” “I didn’t stab anyone. I merely made a gesture

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, November/December 2021 - Page 27 of defiance with it,” I explained. “I can show you if you like.” “That will not be necessary Mr Ramsbottom. Now, I’m still at a loss as to why you are refusing to pay the fifty cents. Surely you can afford it.” The judge suddenly chuckled as he looked around the courtroom, “We can even pass the hat around if it will help.” The judge was starting to annoy me. I hated being patronised. “We are the sum of our principles and values,” I replied coldly. “Once you dishonour one, then it’s a slippery slope from there. I’m sure even judges have some principles.” The judge scowled at me, “I don’t find that very funny Mr Ramsbottom.” “You would if you understood it,” I replied. The judge glared at me. “You’re treading on very thin ice Mr Ramsbottom. Insulting this court has grave consequences.” He consulted his notes again. “You’re a history teacher, is that correct?” “Yes, Your Highness.” The tipstaff leaned in close to me and whispered, “It’s Your Honour.” “My honour?” I replied. “What about my honour?” “Not you, the judge,” the tipstaff hissed. “What are you whispering about?” demanded the judge. “I was instructing the plaintiff to address you correctly, Your Honour,” replied the tipstaff. He reminded me of the tattle-tales at school. “Thank you,” replied the Judge before turning back to me. “Mr Ramsbottom, I think I understand what this is all about. You appear to be completely lacking in both civility and civil responsibilities and I can only say that I’m glad you’re not teaching my children.” “You and me both, Your Eminence.” “What’s that?” said the judge. “I was agreeing with you. I’m also glad I’m not teaching your children,” I replied angrily. The judge rose from the bench, clearly annoyed. “I’m a very patient man Mr Ramsbottom but I’ve had enough. Pay the fine or I’ll hold you in contempt of court. The choice is yours.” I raised my voice. “That’s not a choice. This whole process is designed to bully and cower the innocent, to enforce the regulations and bylaws of Big Brother and crush the spirit of the individual. This is political correctness by stealth. If these proceedings were even marginally fair, then the council would be in court being charged with obtaining money via fraudulent means but we both know that’s never going to happen. I hold this entire court in contempt, so as far as I’m concerned, we’re even!” The judge was seething. “Mr Ramsbottom, now that you’re officially in contempt of court, I’ll give you another choice. You can pay a fine of $5000, do six months’ community service or spend one month in jail. You choose.” I stared at the judge, aghast. “You can’t be serious. You intend to punish me for standing up for myself?”

The judge smiled. “I’m punishing you for your lack of respect. However, as I’m a fair person, I’ll give you the weekend to consider your behaviour. You will appear before me again on Monday and if you apologise unreservedly to this court then I will reconsider the charges against you. To help you make up your mind, you will spend that thinking time in a correction centre.” “Correction centre?” I echoed questioningly. “Jail,” confirmed the judge. He motioned to a burly policeman at the rear of the court. “Take him down to the cells and arrange immediate transport. Now let’s get on with a proper case.” I looked towards Kylie in bewilderment and noticed that she was quietly crying. As I was hustled out the backdoor I wondered what else could go wrong. Unfortunately, as far as Madam Fate was concerned, this was just the entrée. The main course had yet to be served.

PROBUS We are not having a good year in Probus this year with the Covid restrictions. We have had to cancel our meetings since June due to the limited numbers the Government is allowing at the Community House, which means that we have had to cancel some very good speakers we had organised. Also luncheons and trips have not eventuated. We still put out our monthly newsletter to keep members informed of what is happening – or not happening. We had hoped to have a BBQ at Cussen Park recently, but that had to be cancelled as well. We are hoping to have a meeting in November and also to have a Christmas Breakup in December, so are keeping our fingers crossed that these go ahead. Wendy Wilson

Christmas Greetings to all our valued customers, old and new, for your support!

Something to Laugh About... A lady went into her office and found an inexperienced handyman painting the walls. He was wearing two heavy jackets on a hot summer day. Thinking this was a little strange, the lady asked him why he was wearing the coats on such a hot day. The handyman showed her the instructions on the can of paint. They read: "For best results, put on two coats."

AROUND TATURA

Tatura engineer, Alex Carter, won the top award of the Stock and Land farm investors’ contest at the Elmore Field Days with his rotary vacuum seal for irrigation pumping systems. Designed for high volume irrigation and transfer pumps, the rotary vacuum turns a 10-minute job into a matter of seconds and does away with the need for spanners to tighten up bolts and nuts. Mr Carter says other big advantages of the invention are that it eliminates the need for pumping and priming every time the pump is shifted. It can also be made to suit any brand of pump or pumping system. Mr Carter is now eligible for the national final to be held in Orange NSW. ********************* Athol Davies passed away, aged 89 years.

Athol and his brother Errol came to Tatura and bought a farm on Bayunga Road. They called the property Gracedale. During the depression Athol was a shearers expert and travelled throughout NSW to all the big stations. When Athol retired from farming, he was employed by Dalgety Farmers for 12 years. Athol loved his band music and played the cornet. He formed a junior band in Tatura for boys that was very successful. He loved his football and rarely missed a Saturday. He joined the Tatura Bowls Club in 1954 and was President from 1971-72. Athol taught many people to play the game he loved. Some of these bowlers went on to become champions. In 1954 he married Jean Hill and lived at 53 Casey Street for the rest of his life. Athol was a quiet, well-mannered gentleman, had a wonderful sense of humour and a very loving nature.

When visiting Finland, Santa leaves his sleigh behind and rides on a goat named Ukko. Finnish folklore has it that Ukko is made of straw, but is strong enough to carry Santa Claus anyway. Many years ago, in England a traditional Christmas dinner included a pig’s head served with mustard. Though Santa Claus has worn blue and white and green in the past, his traditional red suit came from a 1930s advertisement by Coca Cola. Rudolph was actually conceived by a department store, Montgomery Ward, as a marketing gimmick to get kids to buy holiday coloring books.

RODNEY BRANCH OF THE COUNTRY WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA

A big thank you to all who supported our Scone Drive pop up stall, it was financially very successful with 44 dozen scones, 42 dozen yo-yo’s and 23 dozen Anzac Biscuits ordered. Many sponges, nut loaves, fruit cakes and preserves were sold on the day. It is team effort with members taking the orders, baking and packing the biscuits in advance, the cooks making the dozens of scones early on the morning of the stall so they were nice and fresh, the ladies packing the scones and serving the customers on the day. Our Junior branch were able to hold their November meeting and made envelopes out of a variety of coloured papers and enjoyed catching up and chatting over supper. A Christmas party will be held in December with Christmas crafts, party food and a Kris Kringle. Treasurer Lynne Lowe presented a cheque of $200 to the Tatura SES on behalf of our branch to help with the purchase of equipment

in appreciation of the service they provide to the residents of Tatura. Our senior members were finally able to hold the AGM and our new President is Mandy Perkins, Janette Mason who is now going into her fourth year as our Secretary, Lynne Lowe our Treasurer and Gwen Ranson our Minute Secretary. I wish Beatrice Greaves all the best for 2022 as she is taking on the position of Publicity Officer in my place. All positions were cheerfully filled, and we look forward to a busy and fruitful 2022. Our Christmas breakup/meeting will be at Hilltop and members are to bring non-perishable items for the food boxes being distributed by the Community House for Christmas. Rodney members wish everyone a safe and very Merry Christmas and New Year and hope that families who have been kept apart due to border restrictions can catch up and enjoy a wonderful family Christmas. GOULBURN VALLEY COMMUNITY ENERGY GVCE is helping local businesses reduce their energy use The State Government’s small business energy saver program aims to assist eligible businesses reduce their ongoing electricity costs and lower their greenhouse gas emissions. When upgrading to more energy-efficient appliances, the Sustainability Victoria program provides businesses with a significant rebate that in most cases will cover 80- 100 per cent of the equipment purchase and installation costs. In addition to other rebates, the small business energy saver program offers a bonus payment of up to $2,200 to upgrade to a new energy efficient air-conditioner, commercial refrigerators (including display cabinets and cool rooms), plus hot water appliances. The total rebates can then be in excess of $4,000 for some products based on how much energy the business will save after the old appliance is decommissioned. To help navigate the application process and answer any questions, GV Community Energy (GVCE) is the appointed business engagement Intermediary for Hume Region. This is being done in a joint partnership arrangement with Indigo Power. Based in the northern Victoria, GVCE is a Not-for-Profit company run by a volunteer board of directors committed to promoting community action to reduce energy use and progressively reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. GVCE co-founder and CEO Geoff Lodge stated “this program helps small businesses access free energy saving advice and offers range of government incentives to upgrade to more energy efficient appliances. As part this, we want them to start to think about what else can be done to help reduce energy consumption in their business.” “Our mandate is to provide independent and accurate information to all community members in northern Victoria and as such, have earned a trusted position in our community.” To be eligible, your small business must have: • One to 19 paid employees (full-time equivalent); and • Operate from a commercial (non-residential) premises. This program is not available for Accommodation businesses or for primary producers in agriculture. If your small business operates out of rented or leased premises, you must first gain authorisation for installation activities at the premises. Other community based organisations have been appointed to act as business Intermediary in Metro areas, and in other parts of Regional Victoria. Full program guidelines are available at www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/small-business-energy-saver. If you would like to have a chat to GVCE about a small business located in Hume Region, please register your interest at www.gvce.com.au/sb The program is expected to run for a few more months or until such time that the $5m funding allocation is fully exhausted. ZERO CARBON TATURA Preparing your home for a lower energy use in summer As we move into the hot summer months, keeping your home cool by keeping the sun out will reduce the cost of air conditioning as well as keep you and your family more comfortable. In summer, sunlight contains around 1 kilowatt of energy per square meter. This means that if you have an unshaded window of, say, 2 metres by 2 metres in size, then it’s like having a fan heater on its highest setting running in the room! West and East facing windows are the main culprits, but north windows without eaves are also bad. Especially if you have refrigerated air-conditioning, every extra watt of energy getting inside your house will make your air-conditioner use more energy to get it outside again. So what can you do to reduce your summer energy costs (and help us get towards zero carbon)? It’s very hard to change the way windows face once the house is built, but shading is the next best thing. Inside curtains, blinds and window tinting can help, but exterior shade works much better, stopping the heat before it goes in the window. If you are in a new house, look at getting exterior blinds installed now and plan for future summers by planting trees or vines to shade the windows naturally. If you have solar panels and can run your AC during the day, well done you, but reducing the heat load on your house will lower your energy demand, which means any excess solar you might generate can go to help the grid and the rest of Tatura. What temperature you set your air conditioner to has a big impact on your running costs too. When it’s 40 degrees outside, a room at 25 degrees will feel great in comparison. Going cooler will use about 10% more electricity for every degree cooler. Remember also that setting a low temperature to start with may seem to make the room cool faster, but it doesn’t and there’s a fair chance you’ll forget to put it back up to 25 once you’ve cooled down and anyway, modern inverter ACs will cool at maximum capacity to start with and then cut electricity use once the desired temperature is reached. Sustainability Victoria has some great information on improving home energy efficiency (www.sustainability.vic.gov.au) and locally, Zero carbon Tatura (www.zerocarbontatura.org) are very keen to work with the local community to reduce energy consumption. Please drop us an email if you have any questions or comments to: info@zerocarbontatura.org

WHY IS IT CALLED BOXING DAY?

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL

I think we’ve all asked or been asked this question at some stage of our lives and we generally make up some story about left over packaging from Christmas Day or vaguely refer to re-boxing unwanted gifts so that we can pass them onto some other unsuspecting person next Christmas. Neither of these answers is correct. As the majority of our Christmas traditions originated in England, it’s only natural that we return there to seek the origins of Boxing Day. However, even a small amount of research quickly indicates that there is no clear derivative for Boxing Day, and it simply becomes a matter of choosing the origin that best fits your own beliefs and personality. As nobody really knows what Boxing Day is celebrating, when it started or why, it doesn’t really matter which one you choose. Here then are the prevailing theories: 1. On the day after Christmas, it was traditional for servants and employees to receive a Christmas box containing gifts, bonuses and sometimes leftover food from their employer. As they had been required to work on Christmas Day, they would be given the following day off and would return home and open the Christmas box with their families. 2. In Britain, it was the custom for tradesmen to collect a box of money, food or presents from members of the merchant class on the first weekday after Christmas as thanks for good service throughout the year. This practice is mentioned in 1663 in the diary of Samuel Pepys, an English Member of Parliament. Each Christmas, I remember my mother giving a bottle of scotch to the various local tradesmen who delivered the mail, fruit, vegetables, milk and bread to our house. 3. In the tradition of Good King Wenceslas who gathered up surplus food and wine and distributed them to the poor on the day after Christmas, the alms-giving tradition has always been closely associated with the Christmas season. During Advent, which begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, boxes were placed in Anglican churches where parishioners deposited coins for the poor. On the day after Christmas, the boxes were opened and their contents distributed among the poor. This also coincides with the Feast of St. Stephen which falls on Boxing Day and dates back to the Middle Ages and has a similar collection and distribution scenario. 4. Merchant ships, prior to setting sail on what were often very hazardous voyages, would have a sealed box containing money on board for good luck. A priest would offer prayers to the particular saint in charge of the ship and if the voyage was a success, the box would be given to the priest, opened at Christmas and the contents given to the poor. For me, Boxing Day means that we get another chance to box the ears of the Poms at test cricket. John Kriesfeld

Tatura Primary School prides itself on its great learning environment and the quality of the teaching and learning that continues every day in every way at the school- even during the periods of remote and flexible learning that we have all endured this year. We want to thank our families for the support they gave our children and our staff during this time. There are many positives that have come out of the year, and I hope that we can all focus on them as we look forward to the holiday season. Our children are finishing the year with some much-anticipated activities, even though some adjustments have had to be made. The Grade 6 Graduation is going to be held during the second last week of term and we have plans for a red-carpet event to acknowledge the students’ final year of primary school. Our traditional family concert will be replaced by a video production that will show off the students and their love of the school. Other activities being held this term include Kaiela Arts, Quantum excursions to Melbourne, Kyabram Fauna Park incursion, yachting on Victoria Lake, school picnic, swimming at the Tatura Pool and more! A recent change that you will notice around our school is the beautiful new boundary fence that adds an increased level of safety and security for our children and staff. We understand that it means that our grounds won’t be available for out of hours use any more, but we hope you’ll understand the duty of care we have to our children. We remind regular users that there are many facilities around town that have the convenience of toilets and barbeques, etc. We would like to take this chance to thank everyone within our school community for their continued support as we look forward to the fastapproaching end-of-year. Those of you who have kindly donated money and time know who you are, and we remain truly grateful for your contributions to the school. A special mention to the Parents and Friends and the School Council members also- thank you. As this is the last Bulletin for the year, I would like to thank the Tatura Area Community Bulletin committee for its continual support of our school and the wider community. Susanne Gill, Principal.

ORIGIN OF OLD SAYINGS Worse for Wear: Shabby or worn through use; drunk. This is one of the older phrases in the English language and John Heywood used it in his glossary of Proverbs in the English Tongue, published in 1546: ‘Al thyng is the wors for the wearyng’. Although our language has evolved in the past 500 years, we can still make sense of this. The meaning clearly explains that as things are used, they deteriorate. As it became established in the language 'worse for wear' developed into a synonym for 'worn out'. The phrase took on another meaning in the mid-twentieth century and, along with ‘tired and emotional’, became a euphemism when describing some B grade celebrity found sleeping in the gutter at 4 am after a hard night partying. A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing: Someone who hides their malicious intent under the guise of kindliness. This cautionary advice that someone who appears kind and friendly may not always be trustworthy appears in both Aesop's Fables and the Bible. Aesop (620-560BC) may have originated the phrase, as his tales are much older than any biblical text. The English translation of Aesop's Fables is as follows: ‘Once upon a time a wolf resolved to disguise his appearance in order to secure food more easily. Encased in the skin of a sheep, he pastured with the flock deceiving the shepherd by his costume. In the evening he was shut up by the shepherd in the fold; the gate was closed, and the entrance made thoroughly secure. But the shepherd, returning to the fold during the night to obtain meat for the next day, mistakenly caught up the wolf instead of a sheep, and killed him instantly’. The King James Version of the Bible gives this warning in Matthew 7:15: ‘Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves’. True Blue: Loyal and unwavering in one's opinions or support for a cause. The expression 'true blue' supposedly derives from the blue cloth that was made at Coventry, England in the late Middle Ages. The town's dyers had a reputation for producing material that didn't fade with washing, that is, it remained 'fast' or 'true'. The phrase 'as true as Coventry blue' originated at that time and is still used in parts of England. The change from the reference to coloured cloth to that of steadfast, loyal supporters came during the 17th century. The Covenanters were a group of Scottish Presbyterians who swore to uphold the National Covenant and oppose the rule of James IV of Scotland. They wore blue as their badge and those who unequivocally supported the cause were called 'true blue'.

COFFEE AND CARS On Saturday 4th December there is to be a FREE EVENT (Car Show) in the parking area outside of Hussln Auto Detailing at the corner of Hogan and Ross Streets. Starting at 9 a.m. and continuing until Noon, there will also be a coffee van on site. This will be a good time to bring down your loved vehicle and mix with likeminded individuals. There are many locals who enjoy looking at different cars and with the local car club, GV Fins and Fenders, having to cancel their last two Show and Shines there is definitely a need for this event. See you there. Janice Dreyer

‘An Aussie Night Before Christmas’ By Yvonne Morrison and Kilmeny Niland (Excerpts) ‘Twas the night before Christmas; there wasn’t a sound. Not a possum was stirring, no-one was ‘round

We’d left on the table some tucker and beer, Hoping that Santa Claus would soon be here; We children were snuggled up safe in our beds, While dreams of pavlova danced ‘round our heads; When outside the house, a mad ruckus arose; The cheerful man driving was giggling with glee, And we all knew at once, Who this plump bloke must be.

Now I’m telling the truth, it’s all dinki-di, Those eight kangaroos fairly soared through the sky.

A fat stack of prezzies, he flung from his back, He looked like a swaggie unfastening his pack. He spoke not a word, but bent down on one knee, To position our goodies beneath the Yule Tree.

CHRISTMAS JOKES What kind of photos do Elves take? Elfies! What do Elves learn at school? The Elfabet! What do you get when Santa becomes a detective? Santa CLUES! What do you call an Elf wearing earmuffs? Anything you want – he can’t hear you!
