INTERNATIONAL DAIRY WEEK VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Australia’s International Dairy Week will be held in Tatura from the 20th to the 24th January 2019, at Tatura Park.

This event can only be run with the help of lots of volunteers. We are looking for volunteers to make sandwiches and rolls from 8:15am to mid-morning in the Ballantyne Centre on Saturday 19th to Thursday 24th January. You will not be needed every day!

If you are a newcomer to Tatura this is a great way to meet people.

HEART SAFE COMMUNITY What is a Heart Safe Community? It is one where the community is empowered with the skills and knowledge to feel confident to act if they witness a cardiac arrest. A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops and immediate action is critical to save a life.

In fact, for every minute without life-saving intervention, a person’s chance of surviving decreases by 10 per cent.

The Heart Safe Community project in Tatura, led by the Heart Foundation and Ambulance Victoria, is proudly supported by Gandel Philanthropy and Heart Foundation donors.

Restart-a-Heart Day is a global initiative to raise awareness and education of CPR and AEDs in our community. Last year 6,034 Victorians suffered a cardiac arrest, but only 379 were discharged alive from hospital. Only one in ten Victorians will survive a cardiac arrest which can happen to anyone, anywhere and anytime. 76% of cardiac arrests occur in the home so it is important to know the signs of a cardiac arrest and what to do.

What should you do in a cardiac arrest?

Anyone can save a life in three simple steps: Call, Push and Shock.

TATURA’S AMBULANCE BRANCH Minister for Ambulance Services Jill Hennessy recently toured the construction site of the state-of-the-art ambulance branch on Casey Street, on track to be completed by mid-2019.

Her visit marked the anniversary of Tatura becoming Victoria’s first Heart Safe Community, an Ambulance Victoria and Heart Foundation program aimed at improving survival from heart attack and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

The new Tatura branch will feature a four-bay garage and modern facilities for paramedics including lounge areas, a kitchen, training room and amenities. There is also plenty of space for the service to grow. The new branch will provide a 24/7 emergency service for the Tatura community. With a modern base in the heart of town, response times will continue to improve and more lives will be saved as Tatura patients get the emergency care they need, sooner.

Jill Hennessy said, “We ae putting Tatura families first and building the town’s first ever ambulance branch to cut ambulance response times. The new 24/7 home base will give paramedics the very safest and modern facilities they need.”

Shock using an AED. There are already several defibrillators situated around Tatura and in October, a new AED defibrillator was installed in Stuart Mock Place. Knowing the location of these defibrillators around Tatura can save important minutes in a cardiac arrest situation.

Liam Cowan Receiving His Cheque

SCHOLARSHIP FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STUDENT At its meeting on Wednesday evening the Rotary Club of Tatura awarded the Bruce Anderson Scholarship to Liam Cowan to assist with his tertiary education studies at the Burwood Campus of Deakin University in Melbourne. Liam gave a very informative talk, describing his upbringing in Tatura, having attended Sacred Heart Primary School and then Notre Dame in Shepparton. During this time, he was active in basketball and AFL sport and assisted at Saint Vinnies.

He has always had an interest in nature and the outdoors and is now studying in the three-year course for a Bachelor of Environmental Science, majoring in Wildlife and Conservation Biology. For balance, he has chosen electives including world religions and philosophy. Liam lives on campus and described how he has taken the opportunity to interact with other students from many different regions of Australia and overseas and he has been active in supporting several

on-campus student organisations. The financial support from Rotary will allow him to make the most of these great opportunities offered during first year. While he is still flexible about his future career path, he is very keen to gain work experience with Parks Victoria to put his learning into practice.

Dr Bruce Anderson (1936 to 2009) was a vet in the Tatura district for thirty-five years, serving the rural communities in both private practice and in the public service. He also served the community as an active member and passionate supporter of the Rotary Club of Tatura. Bruce is continuing his support for the community with his bequest, which funds this scholarship. It provides one thousand dollars for first year tertiary education students from Tatura and surrounding districts. Selection depends on ability, social service and need.

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS With another year coming to an end, we can look back and see what we have achieved, and this year it has been a big one for the Tatura Community House.

One of the greatest achievements for 2018 has been the completion and opening of the Coffee Hub. This will enable the Community House to conduct barista training as well as hosting the Coffee Hub Club, a place for people to meet new people and catch up with old friends.

Grants, grants, grants. We have had spectacular success with grants applications this year, achieving a 100% success rate. With $50k for the GV Partnerships and Pathways project (establishing employment and training needs in our community), $30k for minor capital work (installing disable access doors and the creation of a new sound proof consulting room), various grants from Greater Shepparton City Council, John Wallace Foundation, Commonwealth Bank and Bendigo Bank toward the completion of the coffee hub.

Our partnership with Primary Care Connect delivering exercise programs has been a great success.

Costing between $4 to $5 per session, the program is accessible to all and has proven to be rather popular. Come down for a session with our fabulous trainer Lyn. Along with the long established annual events such as Monster Garage Sale, Winter High Tea and Seniors Trivia, we ran 100 Years of Marriage. The sell-out event was an amazing success with a vintage dress fashion parade and an era inspired reception dinner.

The Art Workshops and the Practical Living Seminars have also proven very popular and we look forward to further developing these series in 2019. Any topic suggestions or requests for both

ALL SAINTS MARKET DAY On November 10, All Saints new rector Simba Musvamhiri opened All Saints Market day and spoke how happy he and his wife Helen and family were to come to Tatura, and were looking forward getting to know the folk in the district. Simba said God has provided us with a beautiful day so let's get together and make it a happy fun fellowship day, and so it was just that.

To our community, especially the coverage from all areas of the press, thank you for supporting us. A special thank you to the Mooroopna Secondary College Band who gave up their day to entertain the large crowd and they certainly set the mood for a great day.

Children’s Christmas Fun competition drawings theme was all about how they see Christmas and was decided by popular vote.

The children gave us some lovely thoughts about Christmas and it was quite difficult to select the winners. First prize went to Isabella Beggs, second prize Isobella Spedding and third prize to Thembi Musvamhiri.

Thank you to all the children who entered and only a couple of votes separated them all.

TATURA SENIOR CITIZENS CHRISTMAS IS WITH US Wednesday, December 12, is our Christmas lunch day so make sure you have your name on the list. Any donations for the Christmas raffle will be gratefully accepted, by December 10 please. Clean up day is December 15 and the more assistance we get, the quicker it is all done. We have a break until January 31, 2019 when we resume with a BBQ. Don’t forget to enter your names for the dinners which start February 7, 2019.

The trip to Hanging Rock was a great day with all involved enjoying an interesting day of history and an excellent lunch in Kyneton.

We lost a lovely lady in Beryl Rollinson. She will always be remembered as the ‘Purple Lady’. RIP Beryl, we will all miss you.

CWA HARSTON BRANCH

It was a most enjoyable afternoon when Harston CWA branch members attended their Branch AGM and Scottish day at the Harston Hall. Group President Mrs Lyn Tresize was there to oversee the Branch AGM and all positions were filled. Group secretary Mrs Janice Barrett and guest speaker Mrs Gwen Ranson along with branch members enjoyed a traditional Scottish luncheon.

The entertainment was exciting, the returning Branch office bearers were piped in led by a tune blasted out on the bagpipes by Mr Robin Sharpe, dressed in his Scottish attire. Mr. Nev Doyle then re-enacted the blessing of the Haggis, also wearing his Scottish kilt, whilst all the time speaking the traditional language which left most of us in awe and wondering what was just said.

After the luncheon of Cock-O-Leekie soup, Haggis, Scottish sausage, pudding and Dundee cake. With many thanks to Geoff and Marie Wright, Tash, Judith Poole; always a couple of extra helpers on day like this in the kitchen. The members were further entertained by some additional Scottish history.

Mrs Judith Poole was presented with her 20 years’ Service Badge and Certificate from head office, presented by the Branch President Mrs Freda Clement. Judith is the Immediate Past Group President and Harston’s branch and the Goulburn Valley West Group International officer.

The Annual trophies were announced and presented to the point winners which will be published in the next edition. This year has been one of celebrations as the Country Women’s Association of Victoria celebrate 90 years of community service. In our Goulburn Valley West Group area, we have a branch at Rushworth which started in the same year 90 years ago, and within our Harston Branch,

Freda Clement and Judith Poole we are blessed to have several members who were born around the same time. A foundation member being Mrs. Margaret Donaldson, who has a very special birthday in early December and we wish her love and happiness on this 90th occasion.

Harston branch have several members having operations or just feeling unwell, Irene, Faye, Joan, Margaret, our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Our next meeting is the Christmas Lunch at the Gallery Café. Members are reminded to bring two small gifts, and one we donate to the Salvos for their Christmas giving. Especially at this time of the year we think of those less fortunate than ourselves.

ROTARY HAT NIGHT

The Annual Hat Night conducted by the Tatura Rotary Club to raise funds for Australian Rotary Health, ‘Lifting the lid on Mental Health’, was held at the Tatura Bocce Club on Derby Day night. More than 60 people attended the event and had a fantastic night, enjoying a three-course meal and raising much needed funds. To say the night had a racing theme, would not be an exaggeration.

Approximately $1500 was raised which was a great effort by the club. The Tatura Rotary Club would like to thank all those who

attended and made it so successful. This is the third year of holding this event and it’s going from strength to strength.

The Club would like to pay special thanks to the Major Sponsors for the night, Peter Kennedy Landscaping and Jacobson’s Coach Tours and also Debbie and Lou Worm for all their hard work.

Rotary President, Rod Schubert ran the auction with a great deal of humour and extracted the much needed funds.

Winners were: Race 1 – First Ken Parkes and second Peter Schwarz, Race 2 - First the Tony Mason Syndicate and second Ken Parkes, Race 3 – First Ray Fleming and second Peter Schwarz. Winner of the Prestigious Tatura Cup was the Peter Schwarz Syndicate.

In the heavily contested Best Hat competition, Doug Tuhan took out first prize for the gents and Cecilia Fasano won the ladies.

We look forward to next years’ event being even bigger and better.

GOWRIE PARK PRE-SCHOOL We may be nearly ready to head off to school in 2019, but things are definitely not slowing down at Gowrie Park Pre-School! During Children’s Week, our teddy bears enjoyed a special picnic with us at kinder and we had fun dressing up as what we want to be when we grow up. To get into the spirit of Melbourne Cup Day, we had a Crazy Hair and Fancy Hat Day. Our educators, parents and helpers have very busy raising lots of money with our kinder fundraising events. These have included the Bunnings BBQ, personalised gifts with art work, book fairs and kinder photos. All of these funds are going directly towards the building of a deck and the completion of our community path. These projects are sure to be enjoyed by all current and future students for years to come.

During our independent play, we have continued to have a strong focus on nature and we have even introduced a hammering table to make creations out of natural materials. If anyone knows of a place to get non-treated wood pieces for the children’s wood work, we would be extremely grateful. Our supply gets used very quickly!

In the final few weeks of the year, we are looking forward to an excursion to Tatura Hot Bread Bakery. We will also be sharing our enthusiastic singing with the community at the Tatura Carols by Candlelight where we will be performing. Look out for us on the evening of Wednesday, December 12! We are sure to be covered in tinsel and Santa hats!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for all their support this year. We are very proud of our little kinder and are sure that the children leave us with many fond memories of friendships, fun and experiences. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and we look forward to many new families joining us in 2019.

TATURA COMMUNITY CUBBY HOUSE NEWS Extra day added to much needed service in 2019!! Tarja Pena and the team from The Cubby Occasional Care are very excited to announce that they will be operating an extra day next year, resulting in 3 x 5 hour days - 9am to 2pm. We are currently surveying families to determine which three days would best meet the needs of parents and guardians. Our childcare cares for a maximum of fifteen 0-6 year-olds per session and have offered this friendly, nurturing service to the families of Tatura and surrounds for 35 years. This year The Cubby became a registered Child Care Subsidy provider, giving families another choice when considering child care in the area.

Children are able to be permanently booked in for some, or all sessions, or alternatively can use the service on a casual basis. This flexibility is wonderful for parents and guardians who may be returning to work, children who are transitioning to kinder or long day care or simply to give carers some time out whilst children get looked after at this wonderful service.

You and your child/children are very welcome to come and spend some time at The Cubby. Have a play and speak to our qualified staff about your childcare needs. Please fill in the survey below and drop it off or scan and email it to cubby@tatcom.com.au by November 30.

The end of year festive fun is in full swing. The children have helped set up the Christmas tree, letters have been written to Santa and the children have made some beautiful clay decorations. On December 20 at 1pm, past, present and future friends and families of The Cubby are welcome to come along for the Christmas Party.

This term we had a fabulous dress up day with all the staff and children getting in the spirit of the day. Thank you everyone for supporting our vegie seed and snack fundraiser. We still have a few left so please ask if you would like some vegies to plant over the holidays with your children.

CR KIM O’KEEFFE RE-ELECTED MAYOR At the recent Special Council Meeting, Councillor Kim O’Keeffe was re-elected Mayor of Greater Shepparton for the coming 12 months. This is Cr O’Keeffe’s second term as Mayor. Councillor Shelley Sutton was elected Deputy Mayor for the coming 12 months. This is Cr Sutton’s first term as Deputy Mayor.

Cr O’Keeffe gave the following address at the special meeting: “I am very honoured to have been re-elected as the Mayor for Greater Shepparton for a second term. I would like to thank my fellow Councillors for re-electing me, and also for their support over the past 12 months in my first year as Mayor. I am extremely grateful for the encouragement and unwavering support of my family and friends, and I would also like to extend my gratitude to the people of Greater Shepparton for giving me this opportunity, and for their enthusiasm over the past 12 months. I will continue to do my very best in this role to work hard and achieve positive outcomes for Greater Shepparton and the members of our community.”

DEATH CAFÉ “What would that be?” I hear you think. We don’t generally like to talk much about death but we all know the old saying about the three things that apply equally to all of us; birth, death and taxes!

The Death Café is an international concept (see www.deathcafe.com). At a Death Café people, often complete strangers, gather to eat cake, drink coffee or tea and discuss death.

The broad objective of the Cafe is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'.

Last year a number of successful Death Cafes were organised in Shepparton.

How does it work? A Death Café is an openended group-directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session.

Death Cafés are always offered on a not for profit basis, in an accessible, respectful and confidential space with no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action, and alongside refreshing drinks, coffee, tea and cake.

A typical Café runs as follows although things can turn out very differently. The facilitator asks the group members to introduce

themselves and say why they've come to the Café. This gives an opportunity for people to say whatever they want to say. Everyone takes a turn apart from people who don't want to speak. This part of the Death Café can take some time, up to an hour or so in a group of ten.

After that the facilitator asks if anything came up that anybody in the group wants to discuss further such as thoughts, questions or reflections. This may feel challenging or risky but often attendees tend to take over the discussion and the time flies by.

If attendees prefer a more structured session rather than the individual presentations, then it is okay to introduce a couple of specific questions. It is good to keep such questions very open as the Death Café session tends to fly by and it doesn't work to try to do too much. It is always possible to have more Death Cafés later!

We are planning to hold our first Tatura Death Café early next year in the Coffee Hub in the Tatura Community House. Date and times will be advertised in the next issue of the Bulletin.

WORLD EVENTS

in December

December 1 – World AIDS Day. This day raises awareness about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It is a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died by wearing a red ribbon.

December 3 – International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The purpose of this day is to provide a frame for considering how people with a disability are excluded from society by promoting the removal of all types of barriers; including the physical environment, information and communications technology, and attitudinal barriers. It should be noted that musically challenged karaoke ‘singers’ are not entitled to park in a disability parking space.

December 4 – World Wildlife Conservation Day. The sad truth is that many of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating species are being slaughtered by widespread and dangerous criminal networks. They then sell the animal body parts to deranged and delusional customers around the world who, for example, believe that powdered rhinoceros horn will increase their sexual prowess.

December 5 – World Soil Day. This day celebrates the importance of soil and highlights the fact that soil is the network of interacting living organisms within the earth's surface layer which support life above ground. The nutritional value of the food we eat is directly related to the health of the soil in which it grows. Unfortunately, walking around in soiled clothing to demonstrate your love for the earth is still deemed socially unacceptable. Some attitudes never change.

December 10 – Human Rights Day. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was made by the United Nation in 1948. What are these rights? Well there are too many to list as there are thirty articles and many of them have two or three sub-clauses but having read them all closely I couldn’t find anything relating to the right to drive slowly in the right hand lane or the right to ignore your children while they run wild in the supermarket.

December 11 – International Mountain Day. This is another United Nations sanctioned celebration that honours the fact that mountains cover 22% of the Earth’s land mass. As mountains are in short supply in Tatura, I suggest that we make the trek to Hilltop and celebrate by singing ‘Climb Every Mountain’ from the Sound of Music.

December 13 – Violin Day. The violin is an incredibly versatile musical instrument, allowing for music of great passion and incredible delicacy. Violin Day salutes violinists, and encourages you to listen to music featuring violins. If you’re feeling particularly brave and enjoy annoying your family, friends and neighbours, why not try to learn to play? However, I would also like to point out the inherent discrimination in that there is no drum, bongos, guitar, piano or cello day.

December 14 – International Monkey Day. Although this is a day for monkeying about, it has a more serious undertone and also raises awareness of the theory of evolution, medical research and animal rights.

December 15 – World Underdog Day. While the favourite is called the top dog, the one expected to lose is called the underdog. There have been many underdogs that against all expectations, have gone on to win the competition or event, none more so than speed skater Stephen Bradbury.

It is human nature to barrack for the underdog, the perennial loser, which explains why Collingwood has such a high membership. So, on this day, give some thought to the losers, the runner’s up, the ones who didn’t quite make it, because without these unsung heroes, there can be no winners.

December 16 – Chocolate Covered Anything Day. I think the title of this day pretty much speaks for itself. If it tastes good without chocolate then why not try it covered in chocolate? Be brave and experiment. The only thing you’ve got to lose will be the contents of your stomach.

December 20 – Games Day. Here is an officially sanctioned day to play your favourite games whether they’re computer games, board games, card games or video games. This is a chance to relax and unwind before the hustle and bustle of Christmas although if your games end like mine use to do when I was growing up then it may also be a good idea to wear a helmet.

December 21 – International Look On The Bright Side Day. Everybody experiences pain, suffering and loss at some time in their lives. Some people move on by putting the past behind them and living happily in the present, while others continue to live in the past, reliving their suffering over and over as each day passes, being perpetual victims.

It basically comes down to a choice that only you can make and this day reminds you to look on the bright side of life.

December 22 – Forefather’s Day. Did you realise that every one of your many ancestors, from the beginning of time, lived to an age when they could have children? If just one of them had died in childhood from disease or been killed in a battle before they could marry then you would not exist. The odds against that happening are astronomical so I think it’s worth celebrating. Reflect upon this next time you’re feeling a little unlucky.

December 24 – World Short Story Day. Do you have a short story hidden away inside you that is desperate to get out? If so, start writing today. If it’s around 1000 words, send it in to the Bulletin and we’ll either publish it for you or send it back with suggestions on how it can be improved. What have you got to lose?

December 25 – Christmas Day. There is no need for any explanation here.

December 26 – Boxing Day. There are several explanations behind the reason for this day but all you need to remember is that it’s test cricket at the MCG. December 28 – Card Playing Day. Card Playing Day falls a few days after Christmas, when everybody needs a bit of a break. What better way to relax and spend some time with family and friends than by playing a game of cards? It’s also an opportunity to win back some of the money your splashed out on Christmas presents.

December 29 – Tick Tock Day. The clock is ticking and there are only two days left until the end of the year. So, have you achieved everything you set out to do at the start of the year when you made those inspirational resolutions? That’s what I thought. Tick Tock Day reminds you to cram in some last-minute work to achieve your goals.

December 31 – Make Up Your Mind Day. No excuses, no procrastination, no ifs or buts, this day is your last chance to stop putting things off and get things done. How can you successfully launch yourself into a new year when you’re still carrying around baggage from this year?

The best way to celebrate this holiday is to make a firm decision to make firm decisions from now on.

Students Enjoying Their New Rooms As this is the last Bulletin for the year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wider school community for the support that they show to our school and students. As we go about our daily business of providing a safe and supportive learning environment for our children, there are many people who have other important roles to play. Our parents, grandparents and family friends make sure that students turn up every day in uniform, on time and with everything they need, including a rubbish-free lunch! Our volunteers provide help in the classroom, kitchen and grounds. Local businesses support our fundraising ventures. Other businesses provide products and services to keep us operating, from paper towels to food and equipment. Local media help us to share the great work that we do. The children and staff at Tatura Primary School thank you, one and all.

As we are settling into our fabulous new building, we wish that we had a date for the grand opening so that you could all pop it into your diaries. We will have to wait until further notice from the Department and then you will all be welcome to come and share in the celebrations.

Our Foundation students have begun in their new rooms and they love them. TATURA CHRISTMAS FAIR AND CAROLS

The Lions Club of Tatura are delighted to once again bring you a Christmas Fair from 5:30pm to 7:00pm and Christmas carols from 7pm to 9pm. Entry is free. The event will be held at the Mactier Gardens in Hogan Street on Wednesday, December 12.

The Fair starts at 5:30pm and free BBQ sausages will be available from 6pm to 7pm.

Drinks, fairy floss and glow sticks can be purchased. The children can have fun with the jumping castle and the petting zoo which are both free.

Tickets for the Christmas stocking raffle will be available for purchase. The stocking raffle will be drawn at 7pm.

TATURA TITANS COMPETE AT SWAN HILL TOURNAMENT Tatura’s U18 and U12 boys’ teams competed at the Swan Hill tournament during October.

U18 Boys: The U18 boys had a tough draw on Saturday playing four games. They made a great start to the competition with a comprehensive win 47-29 over Deniliquin Giants. Team work showed with 7 out of the 9 players putting points on the board. Next game saw them meet a much tougher opponent in Mildura Heat, and the boys went down 34-41.

Game 3 saw the team regroup and get a solid win over Rochester 45-39. Back on court for game 4, 8.30pm and their fourth game in 10 hours, the boys dug deep and pushed through the fatigue to secure a thrilling come from behind win against Warracknabeal 33-31. This kept their finals hopes alive as a win on Sunday morning would see them finish in the top two and play off for the title. Unfortunately, it was not to be, going down to a well drilled Bendigo team 20-34.

A great effort by the boys in their first tournament for the season. Josh Evans and Floyd Vincitorio were standouts for the team, averaging 10.8 and 9.4 ppg respectively, and they were well supported by team mates Kelham Tyson, Lewis Walker, Liam Campbell,

Congratulations to coaches Madeleine Rijs and Daryl Wilson on this great first up outing for the Team. We are now looking forward to the Shepparton and Castlemaine tournaments in December.

U12 Boys: The U12 Boys had a fantastic tournament. The weekend started off early Saturday morning at 8am followed by two more games.

The boys won all three games convincingly with wins over Kerang 44-14, Deniliquin 2 74-4 and Mildura 52-4. This put them into the semi-final against Bendigo 3 on Sunday with the winner to go in to the grand-final.

After a nervous start the boys settled into the game to come away with the win 33-15 which was most exciting for the team, coach Maddie and all the parents. With this squad team only winning three games in all their tournaments last year, the change of winning four games and making the grand-final was most exciting, and nerve racking for their supporters!

At 3.45pm Sunday the boys matched up against Deniliquin 1. The game started out very close, goal for goal, until Deni got out to a 10-point margin, but the Tat boys had the never give up, keep fighting attitude that got them within 3 points with one and half minutes to go, but unfortunately Deni scored another quick goal and the boys lost by 5 points. Cooper Gow won the most valuable player in the final.

Overall it was an amazing tournament with all the boys playing strong, smart basketball led by their proud coach Maddie. BECOME A CFA VOLUNTEER TODAY The Tatura Fire Brigade is a volunteer organisation which relies on local people. CFA fire brigades have been a part of the community for over 70 years and you are invited to take an active role in the protection of our community.

Being a CFA volunteer can involve some hard work, but the rewards are great. You can develop leadership and people management capabilities as well as learn new skills that can assist you in your professional and personal life. When you become part of Victoria’s largest volunteer team you will receive accredited training which will help you to put something back into your community. This is a rewarding activity that can involve the whole family and help you to meet new friends.

Volunteering with the CFA is not just about attending bushfires and structural fires, the brigade also conducts fuel reduction burns at important times throughout the year. In addition to that, the brigade also plays a vital role in local emergencies such as attending road accidents to help with rescues, attending incidents involving hazardous materials, providing flood assistance as well as participating in other types of rescues. The brigade therefore welcomes different people with different skills due to the various roles that the CFA plays in our community.

There are many necessary support roles that ensure that the brigade is able to function to its maximum capacity. These include training, fundraising activities, community education programs, media and public relations, multicultural liaison, administration and the very successful junior members program.

You don’t need to have experience to join the brigade as you will be provided with the skills that you will need depending on the role you choose. Your training may include: basic fireground practices, pump operation, fire safety awareness, radio communications, breathing apparatus, leadership skills, community education and administration.

These courses are nationally recognised and the accredited training courses can be beneficial to you on a personal basis as well as enhancing your resume when it comes to employment. It should be noted that all CFA members are fully trained before attending fires or other incidents.

The Tatura Fire Brigade is therefore seeking new members that can help with the following: firefighters, fire prevention, community education, brigade administration, communications and fundraising.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and have diverse backgrounds, interests and skills. You may be self-employed, working part-time, unemployed, actively retired, a home carer or a student, we will have an important role for you. You can also decide your level of commitment, but of course, the more members we have then the more we can share the load. Your level of involvement will depend on your personal availability. Commitment to the brigade simply requires the time and skills that you can afford to give.

So, come and join the team at Tatura and you will find the rewards are fantastic!

30 Years Ago…

Some ratepayers in the Shire of Rodney will be paying more in rates than they anticipated this year. Properties in the shire have been revalued in the past 12 months and the value of some properties has increased significantly. Rodney Shire Secretary, Mr Royden James, said some ratepayers could expect to pay more than 11 per cent. He said, “The value of residential properties has increased by 25 per cent and rural properties by 15 per cent. ***** The Tatura-Harston Red cross held a morning coffee meeting at the home of Mr and Mrs C. Miller to present Long Service and Service awards. Outgoing Regional Chairman of the Goulburn Valley Region Mrs Wilkinson made the presentation to the following ladies: Mrs R. Williams First and Second bar for 40 years service, Mrs A. Potts First and Second bar for 40 years service, Mrs J. Heslop Second bar for 40 years service and Mrs D. Godbehere First bar for 30 years service. The following awards for long service: Mrs E. Miller 20 years, Mrs N. Massey 20 years and Mrs P. Craven was awarded a service award for all the work she has done as a Red Cross Member of 20 years. ***** Though he has been playing the organ for 50 years, Tatura’s James Crawford still refers to himself as “just a bush organist.” James has just clocked up 50 years of playing the organ at the Toolamba Uniting Church but still thinks there is plenty of room for improvement in his playing.

He began playing at the Toolamba Uniting Church when he left school at the age of 16. The Toolamba Church has never been short of organists as the late Mrs Mary Waugh played for many years and was the chief

organist when James first started playing. The church has two other long serving organists in Brian Williams (40 years) and Barbara Wheelhouse (30 years). At one stage there were four men taking it in turn to play the organ, including the late Dick Clement and the late Alistair Cross.

Roslyn Douglas and Craig Walters were married at All Saints Anglican Church, Tatura. The bride wore a silk organza dress with silver detailing on the bodice, a V back featuring a bow and train. The couple will live at Ascot Vale following a honeymoon in Bali and Singapore. ***** Two talented Tatura athletes have been chosen to compete in the United States of America. Sue-Ellen Russell, 13, and Tony Barraclough, 15, both students at Mooroopna High School, were selected for their performances over a 12 month period, including secondary school sports at state level.

Tony, who specialises in the long jump, high jump and triple jump, has broken several interschool records and is a member of the Shepparton Athletic Club. Sue-Ellen is the current All Schools under 14 long jump champion and is also in the first five in the state in the 100 and 200 metres. ***** Two Tatura Policemen will be retiring from the Victorian Police Force after serving 52 years between them. Senior Sergeant Bill Peasnell and Senior Constable Barry Nash will be officially retiring from the force on December 31. Sen Sgt Peasnell first commenced duties as a policeman in 1958 at Russell Street whereas Sen Const Nash commenced his career at the old St Kilda Road Station, now the Guard Centre. Sen Sgt Peasnell will retire to Mansfield while Sen Const Nash intends to live in Tatura and remain involved in the town. He has taken the job of treasurer of the Tatura Football Club and is keen to see them enjoy success next season. ***** Two Tatura ladies are set to take part in the gruelling Murray River Canoe Marathon between Christmas and New Year. The two, Margaret Phelan and June Jones are taking up the challenge of the marathon for the first time. The event is organised by a committee of volunteers who are all dedicated to Red Cross and paddling. To successfully complete the marathon, paddlers will be required to average 80km a day for five days.

The Red Cross hopes to break the $1 million mark in fundraising. Both Margaret and June know the importance of a land support party and with this in mind the Tatura paddlers have an all ladies support crew. Their tasks will involve cooking the food, waiting at the checkpoints, tending to their problems on the river, setting up camp plus numerous other little but important jobs during the course of the marathon.

***** Outstanding young Tatura batsman, Ray Doolan, was named in the Victorian Provincial schoolboy’s cricket side after the sate carnival in Geelong. Doolan produced a succession of good scores after a first day failure to clinch his spot in the team. He amassed 138 runs at an average of 46. Promising young Murchison pace bowler, Xavier Trevaskis, took 3-39 in the first match against Loddon. ***** Brad Ibbott came through a tight second set tie-breaker to win his first ADCO Goulburn Valley Regional Tennis Championships singles final at the Shepparton Lawn courts. Ibbott, of Tatura, won the final in straight sets from title holder and four times winner Wayne Hanslow of Kyabram.

Hanslow coached Ibbott in his junior career before he left to spend four years at university in Texas.

GIRGARRE RSL REMEMBRANCE DAY Girgarre RSL put on a spectacular commemoration for the 100 years celebration of the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918. The provision of a horse drawn World War 1 ambulance led by a trooper dressed in Light Horseman attire and accompanied by a nurse in WW1 uniform and local Girgarre school captains in period dress certainly enhanced the momentous occasion. The ceremony led by Girgarre RSL President Laurie Young, had an element of authenticity about it with the sound of exploding shells and gunfire echoing around prior to the minute's silence signifying that peace had been restored to the world and we were to reflect and remember on those that have fallen and would not return.

Attendance numbers were excellent and following the service, attendees were invited back to the RSL rooms for a cuppa and a special dedication unveiling activity.

The unveiling by Shire of Campaspe councillor John Zobec and Chairperson of the Rushworth and District Community Bank Christine Borger of a commemorative panel in the RSL grounds and dedicated to World War 1 enlistments from the Girgarre district, was in response to a successful grant from the Victorian Government and the Victorian Veterans Council. The panel display will be a physical presence in the town that will be able to be viewed and reflected upon at all times and is an addition to the informative Soldier Settlement display installed by the Girgarre RSL in February 2018.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

I put down my cup of tea and as I was reaching for a small cream cake I mentioned quite casually to Agnes, “I was in a supermarket in Shepparton the other day doing some shopping, and …”

“Oh Merle!” cried Agnes, interrupting me quite rudely. “Why did you shop there? You know we always support our local supermarkets.”

“Oh yes of course,” I replied, rather surprised at having to defend my shopping habits. “I have to stock up for Christmas Agnes, and sometimes you can save quite a bit on the specials and the like.”

“Hmph,” sniffed Agnes. “Well, I think we have all the specials we need right here in town, so you do need to keep supporting them or they will shut down and then where would we be?”

“Oh well yes, alright then, but you do seem to be in a mood today Agnes.”

Agnes glared at me, which I must say was most unusual for her. “I’m not in any sort of mood at all Merle, but we must be very mindful of these things and if we want our small local businesses to succeed then we need to support them at all times.”

Well, I couldn’t let that pass. Fancy Agnes having a go at me. “I could say the same to you Agnes,” I replied sternly. “What about the time you bought those terrible hot pink loggings on the line.”

“Online, Merle, online, it’s online and for the last time they are leggings,” shouted Agnes. “And I only bought the one pair because it was very handy, but I don’t do shopping online very often at all. I usually support our local traders.”

I frowned at Agnes. “Online? That does not even make sense. Who thought up that name for buying things from a computer?”

Agnes shook her head. “You don’t buy them from the computer, you go online, on the web you know, then you purchase them from sites.”

“Sites? Now you’re confusing me even more, Agnes. I really don’t have any time for all of that computer jargon and spending time on the web.

I’m far too busy you know.”

We will be closed on December 25th, 26th and Saturday 29th.

Then open 31st December and closed on Tuesday 1st January.

Agnes took a deep breath. “The internet has a lot to offer Merle. You can Google things to find out about them and it comes in really handy.”

I rolled my eyes at Agnes in frustration. “Oh heavens, goggles, internet, on lines, web, how can any sane person keep up? No thank you Agnes, none of that is for me. Anyway, if I could just continue my story without being chastised it would be much appreciated. Is that alright with you?”

Agnes remained silent although I did notice that she had to press her lips firmly together in order to do so. “Now, where was I? Oh yes, while I was shopping, I saw Garry over by the frozen foods, although he did not see me, thank goodness, so I got out of there as quickly as I could, otherwise he would have just wanted to come and fix something for me.

He’s just looking for free cake and coffee if you ask me.”

“Merle, I think he is really helpful to you,” replied Agnes. “I don’t know why you don’t like him. Fred and I spend a lot of time with him and Monica and they are really lovely company.”

“Oh really?” I snorted. “Monica! You like spending time with her? Well she was outside the supermarket waiting for Garry like a love-struck school girl. The outfit she had on made me feel embarrassed for her. She was sporting jeans and a floral top like she was back in her twenties. That woman needs to dress for her age. Thank goodness she was looking the other way so I didn’t have to make small talk with her as well.”

Agnes looked at me curiously. “Why does she have to dress for her age Merle? Honestly, sometimes I don’t know why you are so mean.”

Well, I couldn’t let that comment pass. “Mean? Me? Mean? Agnes what on earth are you saying?”

Agnes shrugged. “You can be very judgemental at times Merle.”

“Oh, that is just nonsense, Agnes, complete nonsense. All I was saying is that the woman needs to dress for her age. Surely that’s not judging, that’s just common sense. You can ask anybody and they’d agree with me.”

“I don’t think it is common sense Merle, and I do think you can be quite mean sometimes, even rude, and Fred agrees with me,” Agnes said firmly.

I could feel myself starting to get annoyed. “Fred agrees with you? What has happened to you Agnes? What is going on with you today? And what’s all this about talking to Fred about me and him thinking I am mean. What sort of conversation is that? I am not sure what is happening to you Agnes, but I don’t like it one bit.”

Agnes sighed. “Well I just have a lot on my mind lately and some family issues to deal with too and it would be nice if you spent a little time asking about me, instead of talking about yourself all the time. Monica always takes the time to ask about my life. She’s very kind like that.”

I was starting to wonder if Agnes was on some new sort of medication that was affecting her mind. “I cannot believe everything you’re saying Agnes.

It sounds like you’d prefer to spend all of your time with Fred, Garry and Monica. It seems like there isn’t room in your life for me anymore.”

“That is not true Merle,” replied Agnes. “All I was saying is that you can be a bit on the grumpy side sometimes.”

I shook my head. “I just don’t see it Agnes and I am not sure how you can even think that. I’ve always believed in speaking my mind, but calling me grumpy, that does not sound right at all. That’s simply not who I am.”

Agnes got up from the table. “Well let’s just leave it today Merle. I am feeling very tired and do need to get home, so maybe we can catch up later in the week and talk more about this if we need to.”

“Yes Agnes, I can take a hint. I will leave you in peace to enjoy your new friends. Let me know when you can fit me in some time for a coffee when your other friends are too busy elsewhere.”

Agnes smiled sadly. “Yes, yes Merle, okay then, see you later.”

I was quite baffled and a little confused as I walked away. What had just happened? We’ve been really good friends for all these years, and suddenly Agnes turns on me just like that. I am not sure what to think about the whole thing.

I mean, who gets new friends and then starts to treat their old ones like rubbish? What can be so important in Agnes’s life to make her treat me like this? Can someone please explain this to me? Anyone?

TATURA PROBUS CLUB Tatura Probus club meets at the Tatura community Centre on the last Thursday of the month. All new members are welcome to join us there.

Thirty-two members attended with a few away sick, we wish them a speedy recovery. After business was dealt with, Margaret Nicholl gave a report on the Silo trip. We had a lovely day going around the countryside, Dookie, Devenish, Goorambat, stopping at Tungamah for lunch and were entertained by the local 60-year-old cockatoo who seemed to think he owned the bar and had a chat to everyone.

Leanne from the Tatura Community House welcomed us and provided an update on the new library and programs for the future. The committee is trying to negotiate funding for a community car, which would be a benefit to Tatura. Our guest speaker was Sue Mancini who spoke about the Kindred Spirit annual fund raiser. This year it will be Opera in the Convent garden and all the money raised will go to our local children in need. Our secretary Phyl Mactier donated a beautiful painting as a raffle.

Thank you to Sue and her helpers, you are a remarkable lady. Our member Joan Baumber had her story published in the Probus Active Retirees.

Joan, who is 96 years of age, recognises that things have slowed down in her final years of retirement but still finds joy in the small things like watching the birds in her garden. Joan doesn’t dwell on things she can’t do anymore but still enjoys life. She is still busy with the tree group and her church and Joan’s family check on her regularly. She enjoys the company of her lovely sister Betty and still does the crossword every day and drives to town for her shopping. “I am always using my brain for something,” she says. Not bad for a 96-year-old. Well done Joan!

You are a great example to everyone.

Santa Claus

Interviews with John

My interview this month is with Santa Claus John: Santa isn’t a very common name, in fact I don’t know of anybody else called Santa. Where did your name come from?

Santa: Actually, Santa isn’t my real name. In the early days I was confused with a chap called Saint Nicholas who gave out presents to the needy. The Dutch called him Sinterklass and then when the Christmas legend was passed on to the English, who tend to have tin ears, they called me Santa Claus.

John: So what is your real name?

Santa: Ho, ho, ho, wouldn’t you like to know.

John: Yes, that’s why I was asking.

Santa: Oh, okay, it’s Kris.

John: Now, I have a few questions from the boys and girls in Tatura.

First of all, why do you live at the North Pole? Why not somewhere nice like Hawaii?

Santa: You sound like my wife Mary. She’s always going on and on about moving to a warmer climate. However, I’d never get any work done if I lived somewhere like that. I’d be bothered day and night by travelling salesmen and corporations wanting me to endorse their products. There’d be bus tours and school trips and someone would be sure to build a Christmas theme park next door. No, isolation is the key to my success.

John: Little Billy wants to know how you know if he’s been naughty or nice?

Santa: I’m not sure how that bit of misinformation began, probably some mother wanting to control her misbehaving child. Any boy or girl who has been absolutely good all year must be one very boring and annoying goody two-shoes. The truth is, it doesn’t matter although it’s always better to be nice rather than naughty. Nice children tend to get more presents than naughty ones.

John: So you don’t keep a list.

Santa: Don’t get me wrong, lists are important but I simply don’t have the time or the resources.

John: Little Emma wants to know how your reindeer fly when they don’t have wings?

Santa: That’s another reason why I live at the North Pole. My elves discovered a special lichen that only grows at the North Pole and gives my reindeer magical gas. In the same way that rockets don’t have wings, my reindeer are propelled through the air by this gas. The fumes can be quite strong, which is one of the reasons why I have such a thick beard.

However, they do clear out the sinus passages wonderfully John: Little Jack wants to know how many toys you deliver on Christmas night.

Santa: I haven’t really counted them but Blinky, my head elf, tells me it’s just over five billion.

John: That’s a lot of toys. How do you fit them all in your sleigh?

Santa: (Laughs). The same way that I’m able to visit all the houses around the world. It’s called the magic of Christmas.

John: Hmm, how does that work?

Santa: You can’t explain magic. If you could then it wouldn’t be magic, it would be science. Do you know where the magic of Christmas comes from?

John: I can’t say that I do.

Santa: It comes from all the boys and girls. The more they believe in me, the greater the magic.

John: So, if nobody believed in you ….

Santa: Then there would be no magic of Christmas. Fortunately, millions of boys and girls around the world believe very strongly so there is still plenty of magic to go around.

John: Okay, let’s move along then. Little Kylie is concerned that you won’t have enough money to pay all your elves.

Santa: You can tell little Kylie not to worry because my elves actually work for nothing. They’re just love making toys but I do feed them and provide a home for them and that costs a lot of money. The materials for the toys can also be quite expensive.

John: So where does the money come from?

Santa: It’s all to do with financial funnelling. When you buy an item that costs $4.98, you hand over a five dollar note. How much change to you receive in return?

John: I don’t get any money back. The two cents change just disappears.

Santa: Exactly, except it doesn’t disappear. It gets sent to me. Every day, all over the world, there are at least ten million transactions involving one or two cents and that adds up to a lot of money.

John: So you’re really rich then.

Santa: Let’s just say I’m comfortably off. Those elves eat a lot of food and my reindeer eat like horses.

John: Little Ben is worried because his house doesn’t have a chimney.

Santa: Oh yes, that old chimney chestnut. I accidently trip over and fall down one chimney and all of sudden that’s how I always enter a house.

Now really, do I look that stupid?

John: It’s hard to say under that beard.

Santa: Well I’m not. I use the front door like everyone else. Locked doors are no obstacle for me as I have a magic key that can open any door in the world.

John: So you could rob the bank if you wanted to.

Santa: You mind seems to work in a strangely evil way. I can assure you, the last thing on my mind is robbing banks. Now, do you have any more questions?

John: Er, yes. Little Kate wants to know if she has to leave out food for you.

Santa: It is very tiring work and a little nourishment is always appreciated but can I just say, if you’re going to leave out milk and biscuits for me, make sure it’s full cream milk and not any of that soy rubbish. Please remember that I’m also partial to a cold beer or a nice glass of whiskey.

John: Here’s the final question and it’s from little Sharon. She wants to know how you will find her if she is visiting someone else on Christmas Eve? Santa: One of the benefits of knowing everything and seeing all, is that you actually know everything and that includes knowing where every little boy and girl is on Christmas Eve, so you tell little Sharon not worry.

John: Okay Santa, I’ll do that.

Santa: Before I go, can I just ask all the mums and dads out there to make sure their children spell Santa correctly when they write me a letter. The letter ‘n’ is the third letter, not the last. It has led to some confusion in the past.

John: Oh dear, I see what you mean. We don’t want our children dabbling in the dark arts. Anyway, thank you for your time and please remember that I have thought about being a good boy and I’m told on excellent authority that it’s the thought that counts.

Santa: Ho, ho, ho. Nice try.

TOOLAMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Early Years - 1914 - 1918 RELIGION Father T. J. O’Connell dedicated his life to the Tatura Catholic church for almost fifty years. He was ordained at St. John’s Church, Waterford, Ireland in June, 1884. His ministry at Tatura began in 1896 when St Mary’s church was eight years old, but within fifteen years the congregation there had grown so greatly that the building was too small and a new more imposing structure was built and opened on December 15 in 1912. The altar in the church was a gift of Thomas Flanagan and his wife and Mr and Mrs Thomas Hogan provided the magnificent windows in the chancel.

Thomas Hogan was the leading Catholic layman of his time. His fidelity to the Church and his many benefactions to various religious institutions were rewarded during his lifetime by a knighthood conferred on him by Pope Pius XI, and he is thought to have been the first Catholic in the Goulburn Valley to be appointed a knight of the Church. He was born at Limerick, Ireland, came to Australia with his parents at the age of 13, and lived at Gisborne where he was married in 1868.

Strangely enough, Thomas Hogan was one of the last to take up land near Tatura. All the other selectors had passed his allotment by because it was subject to flooding, but in time it became one of the most valuable areas of real estate in the town.

During fifty years at Tatura, Hogan devoted his attention to the raising of sheep, cattle and horses with considerable success, and he purchased the Commercial Hotel where he and his family carried on the business until 1908.

His public activities were many and diverse.

He was a member of the Rodney Irrigation Trust throughout its existence and a member of the Rodney Council for 24 years. He was also a commissioner of the Tatura Waterworks Trust, trustee of the Mechanics’ Institute and the Turf Club of which he was the first official starter and later a judge, foundation member of the Cemetery Trust and Chairman of it for 25 years, and one of the first directors of the Tatura Butter Factory company. He died at the age of 87 in 1926. The Sacred Heart Church is almost as much a memorial to Hogan as it is to Father O’Connell and the Chancel windows continue to remind worshippers of his early influence in the church.

There was still some debt remaining on the building in 1922 when the parishioners conducted a monster carnival in an effort to wipe it off. The Queen of Sport competition won by Kathleen Brady raised over 2200 pounds but the greatest attraction was the visit of Dr Mannix, Archbishop of Melbourne, whose guard of honour consisted of 30 horsemen on grey horses, 40 cars, 100 gigs and buggies, with many of them decorated in the archbishop’s purple and gold. Dr Mannix

spoke on ‘Sectarianism in Politics’ and ‘The Troubles in Ireland.’

The history of the convent at Tatura dates from November 1899 when O’Connell applied to the Superior of the Convent of Mercy, Bendigo, for a foundation of nuns for his parish and in November 1900 five sisters arrived in Tatura. They first visited the church where a Te Deum was sung and were then conducted to a six-roomed cottage that was to serve as their home for many years. A primary school was built and opened and a high school was run from one of the rooms in the nun’s cottage until it was found to be inadequate and a new brick classroom was then built. This served its purpose for twelve months, then the indefatigable Father O’Connell set to work and had a totally new college and convent built. In June 1941, 1000 people gathered in the Sacred Heart Church to celebrate the opening which was followed by a procession to the convent.

It was announced in 1935, that on his death, Father O’Connell would be buried behind the central altar of the church. According to the Free Press, the chairman of the Health Commission explained that, “it was policy to allow the founder of a church to be buried in the building or grounds. Burial within the church demanded that the casket be of lead, that the sides and bottom of the vault be of concrete, and the entire covering be of charcoal, and that the slab be of concrete or slate.” When the pastor died ten years later he was duly interred in the vault during a Solemn Requiem Mass attended by forty priests. The pall bearers were G. Mitchell, J. Maher, P. O’Toole, A. McDonald, J. Ford and J. Delaney.

We have had yet another fantastic year at Toolamba Primary School. Our students have continued to impress us on many occasions.

We love receiving positive feedback from people who work with our teachers and students.

Term 4 was once again an action packed term.

It commenced with our swimming program at Aquamoves in Shepparton. It was fantastic to see the development of our students through their week of water safety activities.

It certainly gives us confidence knowing that our students are well prepared for a summer of swimming. Thanks to Mrs Bathman for her logistical brilliance during this time.

Our school camping program was in full swing this term. Our Grade 3/4 students enjoyed three days at Campaspe Downs in Kyneton on their first away from school camp experience.

The students were challenged on many levels.

It was great to see such a positive response to this big step towards independence. The Grade 5/6 students will attend Anglesea in late November to build upon their skills at the YMCA camp. They will even enjoy a spot of surfing! The Grade 2 students had their sleepover at school as their introduction to our school camp program.

Our Parents and Friends have once again been very busy on the fundraising front with many efforts throughout the year. Their Mango Fundraiser was a huge success and we are all eagerly waiting our pre-Christmas delivery.

The Junior School Council held a fete during school hours. This fete allows the students to lead the stalls and to build upon their organization skills.

We are now busy preparing for the 2019 school year. Students will find out their new teacher on our Orientation Day in December. Thanks to everyone who has supported our school throughout the 2018 year.

JUDY REVELL Judy Revell, and her husband John, have lived at Wybalena in Murchison for going on six years. Here she tells us a bit about herself and how she came to live in Murchison.

Why did you come to live in Murchison?

We came to Murchison in June 1965 because John worked for State Rivers and they had house for us in Meteorite St. We have three children Elinor, Linda and Stuart. They all have their own families now and we regularly enjoy time with them.

As well as looking after your family and the home, did you have any spare time to do other things?

For 25 years I taught swimming to all the school children in the district, Murchison, Dhurringile, Toolamba and Moorlim Primary Schools, in the Murchison Pool and we had swimming club Saturday mornings

over summer. Marianne Begg would help and we would go home with sunburnt shoulders and frozen legs. There was no pool heating then.

Our children all went to Murchison Primary and I helped with the Mother’s Club and was Tawny Owl with Brownies.

There was a butcher shop in Murchison. The butchers were Jeff Childs, then Syd Moore and lastly Neil Brock. As I had worked in the butcher shop in Tatura before my marriage, I also worked there for a while.

I loved cooking and was also on DP Jones Auxiliary. We catered for weddings, funerals and lots of other gatherings.

Unfortunately, a couple of years ago John had a stay in hospital which was a little bit frightening and I had a bit of a meltdown and felt he was not coming back and it’s taken me quite a while to get back and I think I lost a lot of motivation. I was ready to look for Meals on Wheels or more Home Help but we go to lunch at the Neighbourhood House on Monday and Wednesday and I’m doing okay now. I used to love to cook sponges and now that I don’t, that’s why he’s (John) so skinny. No cakes or puddings. I have to keep him though because I can’t open jars anymore and I can only reach the low cupboards I see you are the Yoyo champion of 2009?

One of my sons-in-law made the award. I made Yoyo’s for all our families at Christmas time, so my grandson thought I needed an award for them. ….and you have quite a few bowls awards?

Bowls, we both played quite a bit. I like to play for enjoyment, some of the ‘away’ men are a bit competitive for me now!

We’ve been here at Wybalena for nearly six years. A couple of years before we moved I said to myself, I want to move to a smaller place before I turn 80. I knew Jan Dunlop who was on the committee at the time. Our house had got a bit rundown and being on the pension we couldn’t do the maintenance or upgrades needed, our handy man was getting past helping us as well.

About eight years ago Jan offered us a double unit but John was not interested. When I was talking to Jan a few years after that, she said they had a vacancy and I went had a look! I came home and told John, he said we are not moving, but I said, “Yes we are!” A week after the move John said, ‘It was a best thing we have ever done.’ We love it here.

The people here at Wybalena are always ready to have a chat and have become very good friends who look out for each other but don’t live in one another’s pockets. The security is really good, mostly because there is always someone at home. Each unit is very functional, everything works and if it doesn’t, we just call the maintenance man and it’s fixed.

It’s marvellous here!

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS SHOP The Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre is ready for festive shoppers as we rapidly approach the holiday season, with residents and visitors able to source their local Christmas gifts and cards from the Community Christmas Shop.

After a successful season last year, the staff and volunteers of the Visitor Centre will be welcoming back the Community Christmas Shop and are looking forward to sharing the space with the volunteers from Vision Australia, Soroptimist International and Australian Red Cross.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development Geraldine Christou was pleased to see the Community Christmas Shop back for another year and encouraged residents to support local charities and visit the shop to buy their Christmas gifts and cards.

“Give your friends and family from out of town something unique from the Greater Shepparton region this year,” Ms Christou said. “We will again be sharing the centre with charity shop organisers, so it’s a wonderful way to support local charities during the holiday season.”

The charity shop will be open at the Visitor Centre on Wednesday’s, Thursday’s and Friday’s during Wednesday, November 14 and Friday, December 14, 9.30am to 4.00pm.

The Visitor Centre is located at 33-35 Nixon Street (opposite the Queen’s Gardens) and is open daily from 9am to 5pm, but will be closed on Christmas Day.

CHRISTMAS DAY LUNCHEON

The Tatura Football Netball Club is once again hosting a Christmas Day luncheon. We encourage anyone, who for various reasons, is unable to be with family or friends for Christmas dinner to come along and enjoy a traditional home cooked roast dinner.

Family groups are also welcome to come and share in the Christmas camaraderie that prevails at these occasions.

The Christmas Luncheon is held at home of the Bulldogs, the Ballantyne Centre, Hastie St Tatura. Start time is 12 noon and concludes at 2.30 pm. The meals are provided free of charge, alcohol is not permitted but soft drinks are included.

The luncheon is in its fourth year and was initiated after a conversation regarding how Christmas Day can be a sad and lonely day for some if they do not have the means or ability to be with family. This can be a reality for some and quite contrary to the image we all relate to at Christmas. The event continues to grow with the number of attendees increasing every year and identifies a real need.

Steve O’Toole, the renowned roast chef, and John Lovel continue to steer the event with the help of many tireless volunteers.

Generous donations from individuals also enable the club to provide the meals at no cost to the community.

For those wishing to attend, you must book by contacting Steve O‘Toole on 0412 477 586, John Lovel on 5824 1786, or by calling into the Tatura Newsagency. Everybody is welcome and the more the merrier. Hope to see you all there.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB

Rod Kirby with Jayne French The Tatura Bowls Club conduct a social bowls day annually with all proceeds being donated to the Tatura Hospital. Last year the event raised a substantial amount and a cheque for $1616.40 was presented recently by current Tatura Bowls Club President Rod Kirby to Manager and Director of Nursing, Jayne French. Tatura Bowls member Adrian Barry was most active in sourcing donations from business houses and organisations in the area and this allowed the total of all entry fees and raffles to be allocated in their entirety to benefit the local hospital. Participants were also most generous in their purchasing of raffle tickets.

Manager Jayne French stated that the Tatura community have always shown great support for their local hospital and acknowledged the generous donation from the Tatura Bowls Club. The donated funds will be put towards replacing beds in the Hospital and Aged Care facility. Jayne said that she is constantly amazed with the generosity of the local community towards their hospital and greatly appreciated the financial support.

The Tatura Bowls Club have scheduled their next Tatura Hospital Charity Day to be on January 20, 2019 commencing at 1pm.

JIM COOMBS PERPETUAL TROPHY An annual fixture and an excellent means of practice in preparation for the lawn bowls pennant season is the Jim Coombs 2 Bowls Championship.

Tatura Bowls club members enter a sectional draw with the winners of each section playing off until the club has an eventual winner. This year the final was played between a couple of classy bowlers in Jason Carter and Nick Tziros with Nick winning the final. His feat will now be recognised with his name inscribed on the perpetual shield. The shield is in honour of a former past bowler Jim Coombs who served the club with distinction for many years.

ORIGINS OF CHRISTMAS

Santa Claus The origins of Christmas can be traced back to ancient pagan celebrations.

The world is a multicultural place with its people celebrating holidays during the final weeks of the year, from Hanukkah to Kwanzaa. With one third of the world's population Christian, Christmas is celebrated in more than 160 countries. Even in places where Christians are in the minority, many still honour the holiday, sometimes in unexpected ways.

I enjoy the celebration of Christmas and like many others use it as time to spend with my family. I find it interesting to learn the origins of some of our customs and while doing research I read of many different customs from around the world. ‘Find the pickle’ is where a pickle shaped ornament is hidden somewhere on the Xmas tree, with the person who finds it getting an extra present. Decorating palm trees with lights and ornaments and using canoes and dolphins to resemble Santa's sleigh and reindeer is quite creative in Hawaii. Some countries have family gatherings taking place on Christmas Eve, with huge feasts, gifts exchanged at midnight and children going to sleep to the sound of fireworks. In another country people exchange books on Christmas Eve, then spend the rest of the night reading them and eating chocolate.

Did you know that Mistletoe was held sacred by the Norse, the Celtic Druids and Native American Indians because it remains green and bears fruit during winter when other plants seem to die? Druids thought the plant had the power to cure infertility and nervous diseases and to ward off evil. Long before there were Christmas trees, the pagans revered evergreens as symbols of eternal life and rebirth. The city of Riga, Latvia holds the claim as home to history's first decorated Christmas tree in 1510 and according to legend, the first person to decorate a Christmas tree was Protestant reformer Martin Luther when he was so moved by the beauty of stars shining between branches of a fir tree he brought one home and decorated it with candles for his children. Germans made the first artificial Christmas trees, using dyed goose feathers to look like needles of a pine or fir tree.

The tradition of tinsel, which was invented in Germany in 1610, is based on a legend about spiders whose web turned into silver when they were spun in a Christmas tree. Round glass Christmas ornaments were inspired by the shape of apples and were the original Christmas ornaments put on the tree to symbolise the Garden of Eden. The idea for

electric Christmas light displays was first introduced by Thomas Edison's assistant, Edward Johnson, in 1881 but it was American Ralph Morris who invented the type of lights we use today, adapted from lights used in telephone switchboards in 1895.

Early illustrations of Santa Claus pictured him as a stern, commanding disciplinarian holding a birch rod. The jolly old fellow we know and love today was created by artist Haddon Sundblom for a Coca-Cola advertisement. Tom Smith invented Christmas crackers around 1846.

He was inspired by the French habit of wrapping sugared almonds in twists of paper as gifts. Fruitcake originated in ancient Egypt, where it was considered essential for the afterlife. Roast turkey didn't appear on Christmas Day menus until 1851, when it replaced roast swan as the favourite dish of royal courts. Christmas pudding was originally more than just a tasty treat. Small items such as coins (wealth) and buttons (bachelorhood) were put inside and supposedly foretold what the New Year would bring. I remember my mother always put in threepence coins in ours, which was a real highlight of the meal for me and my siblings.

The candy canes origins can be traced back to Europe around 1670.

They were generally all white until the 1900s, when they took on a shape representing the hook Jesus used for shepherding his lambs and with colour white representing purity and red representing Christ's sacrifice.

The Christmas tradition of hanging stockings allegedly began with three poor sisters who couldn't afford a marriage dowry. The wealthy Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna in modern-day Turkey supposedly saved them from a life of prostitution by sneaking down their chimney and filling their stockings with gold coins.

‘Good Christian Men, Rejoice’ is one of the world's oldest traditional Christmas songs with roots stretching back to the Middle Ages. The Medieval German and Latin text is believed to have been written by Dominican friar Heinrich Seuse around 1328. The music dates back to at least 1400 but historians believe it may have existed in Europe even earlier. Bach's choral prelude and Pearsall's 1837 translation helped to popularise the tune. The English version, arranged by Anglican priest John Mason Neale, is by far the most popular version of the song today.

Interestingly enough, though Neale founded the Anglican and Eastern Churches Association, he's most famous for composing lyrics for classic Christmas songs. His other famous works include ‘Good King Wenceslas’ and ‘Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel’. Some of the most beloved traditional Christmas carols came from countries where English was not the primary language. ‘Oh Come, All Ye Faithful’ was originally written in Latin in 17th century and has been attributed to King John IV of Portugal. ‘Oh Christmas Tree’ is based on a traditional German folk song. ‘Deck the Halls’ was originally a pagan Yuletide drinking song, with the melody taken from a 16th century Welsh song, with the English lyrics not coming along until 1862. My two favourites are ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’, which was invented by Montgomery Ward copywriter Robert L. May in 1939, as a way to lure customers into the store, and ‘Jingle Bells’, which wasn't intended to be a Christmas carol at all. Composed in 1857 by James Lord Pierpont, the organist and music director at a Unitarian Church in Savannah, the tune was actually written for Thanksgiving and often used as a drinking song, with revellers jingling the ice in their glasses as they sang. Merry Christmas Everyone!

THE HISTORY OF TATURA PROBUS In 1998 Tatura Rotary was approached by members of the community who had family members in Probus or who had been in Probus, elsewhere before settling in Tatura. Trevor George, President of Rotary, saw fit to find out what interest there was and called for a meeting on October 14, 1998 at the Community Centre to determine what interest there was in forming a club. There were speakers from other Probus Clubs and Frank Faulkner, sponsored by Rotary, spoke of the amazing growth of local clubs, Susanne Gill on the Tatura Action group's role in the formation, Eileen Pinkerton, a member from the Ballarat Club who had recently moved to Tatura, Peg Greenham from Mooroopna Probus, and Martin Munroe spoke on the process of forming a club.

Probus is based on friendship, interesting guest speakers, all sorts of topics, trips, outings, get-togethers and lunches.

The Foundation meeting was held on November 12, 1998 at Hill Top Golf Club.

There were 58 people present, including three visiting Probians, six Rotarians, Suzanne Gill from TAG and fourteen apologies. Chairman Rotarian Tom Perry, representing the president, welcomed the group and outlined the meeting agenda. Rotarian Elect Jennie Hippisley gave the address to Probus. After question time the prospective members read the constitution provided and filled out their application for Foundation membership.

Management committee and office bearers were elected. These were President Joan Baumber, Vice-president Jim Curtis, Secretary Kate Leak, Treasurer David Wilson, along with committee members Eileen Pinkerton, Bill Wise, Jock Layton, Athol Reynolds, Jack Muir, Betty Curtis and John Gow. The 62 foundation members annual subscription was set at $20 and there was a cap of 80 members. In March 2000 this cap was lifted to 90 and in January 2001 this was changed to 100. In October 2001 the cap was removed altogether.

The Club continued to meet at Hill Top until 2008 when the meeting venue was changed to the Tatura Italian Club. Lagozzino's Top Pub was the next venue and in October 2018 the club returned to the Tatura Community House.

Tatura Probus members have provided many of the Club's accessories.

Geoff Pinkerton made the notice board, the speakers stand and our banner stand. In 1999, Geoff and Keith George were responsible for putting up our decal at the entrance to Tatura. The Club was incorporated in June 2000 and at the same time Mary Goodwin and Phyl Mactier created our banner. In 2014 Ursula Weitacher offered to represent Probus by painting wooden pickets, a project of Tatura Community House. In 2017 the Past Presidents banner was restored by David and Wendy Wilson and Phyl Mactier. Photos of members and trips enjoyed over the years have been collected and filed into albums by Barbara Halliwell.

This year, Tatura Probus has fifty members, eight of which are Foundation members.

NON-SENSICAL ENGLISH Part 1 by John Kriesfeld

I teach an eager group of Vietnamese migrants conversational English at the Tatura Community House each week and I frequently assure them that the difficulties they are experiencing with the English language are not due to any short-comings on their part. Last week, for example, we were looking at words that contained ‘ough’ and I had to laugh at the look of bewilderment on their faces each time I introduced another ‘ough’ word.

Say each of these words out loud and you will understand their concern – ought, cough, bough, rough. “Why is English like this?” they constantly ask, which is an excellent question. Here then is an attempt at an answer.

The English language is about 1,500 years old, and began, naturally enough in England, or Britain as it was then called. Up until that time, the people of Britain, Scotland, Wales and Ireland spoke Celtic languages which was very different to English. The Romans invaded Britain during the first century A.D and brought with them the Latin language and the Roman alphabet. Around the fifth century A.D the Angles, Saxons and Jutes also invaded Britain and brought with them their own languages and their own alphabet which was based on runes. Britain was called Angleland, the people became known as Anglo-Saxons and the language was called Old English and was written in the runic language. However, Christian monks who travelled to England preferred to write in Latin and therefore used the Roman alphabet whenever they wrote anything down. The Viking invasions in the 9th and 10th centuries added several additional languages to the mix which the Christian monks also wrote down using the Roman language. When the Normans conquered England in 1066, they continued to use the French language and also wrote using the Roman alphabet. A few extra letters that the Romans didn’t have, J, V and W were added over time and by the 16th century the English alphabet pretty much resembled the one we have today.

The English then began to acquire colonies around the world in America, Africa, Australia and India and other words eventually found their way into the English language – zebra, budgerigar, bungalow, khaki.

Unfortunately, the main problem with using the Roman alphabet is that it was meant to write the sounds of Latin words, not English ones. In English there are at least 40 different sounds and the Roman alphabet, even with the additional letters, only has 26 sounds. Over time, scribes used various combinations of letters to try and manufacture the equivalent of English sounds when writing. Different scribes invented different combinations for the same sound which is why we have a sound like ‘or’ being spelt with au (haul) oa (boar) ou (bought) aw (awful) and there’s probably others.

Dutch and French typesetters were valued highly for their expertise but they also made arbitrary changes to suit their own Latin background.

For example, French typesetters didn’t understand why they should write the Anglo-Saxon word cwen when what they obviously heard was queen, so they changed it. The Dutch typesetters felt that gost was missing something so they slipped in the letter ‘h’ to make ghost. There are many examples of these typesetters’ good intentions, which only served to muddy the waters further.

Then from 1350 to 1700, we had the Great Vowel Shift. The main

difference between the pronunciation of Middle English in the year 1400 and Modern English is in the value of the long vowels. In linguistics, vowel length is the perceived duration of a vowel sound. For example, ‘mat’ has a short vowel sound and ‘mate’ has a long vowel sound. Some scholars have argued that the rapid migration of peoples from northern England to the southeast following the Black Death or great plague was the reason for this although no-one knows for sure. Before the shift, boot was said like boat, and out sounded like oot. However, when the sounds shifted, the spelling remained behind. Other languages, such as German, experienced similar vowel shifts in their history but unlike English, they changed the spelling to match the shift.

If all of this wasn’t enough to confuse everyone, scholars during the Renaissance fell in love with the ancient classics and began borrowing Latin and Greek words for any new scientific or technological discoveries.

They also decided that words we already use should display their classical heritage. The word ‘peple’ could be traced back to the Latin ‘populus’ so in order to show its classical heritage it should therefore be spelt with an ‘o’ to make it ‘people’. As the word ‘det’ was derived from the Latin ‘debitum’ it was decided to add a ‘b’ in order to make this clear.

Now we have Americans adding further confusion to the English language by their efforts to simply the language – ‘color’ instead of ‘colour’ and ‘center’ instead of ‘centre’, and who knows what future changes will occur as a direct result of lazy text messaging.

I like to tell the story about Lewis Carroll, the author of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. During a lecture he wrote the word ‘ghot’ on the board and asked if anybody could pronounce it. After various unsuccessful attempts he informed his audience that the word was pronounced ‘fish’. He then went on to explain that the ‘gh’ said ‘f’ as in ‘enough’, the ‘o’ said ‘i’ as in ‘women’ and the ‘t’ said ‘sh’ as in ‘station’.

As I tell my language students, not only is English one of the hardest languages to learn, it is also the one that makes the least sense. Thankfully I was born with it and do not have to struggle trying to learn it as a second language as the rest of the non-English speaking world has to.

TURATON MUSIC COMPANY On Sunday, October 21, Turaton Music Company joined with the Shepparton Brass And Wind Band at Eastbank in a concert commemorating 100 years since the end of World War I. The concert titled, ‘The Centenary of Armistice’ was conducted by Lachlan Gallacher, and Turaton music director Shirley Ferguson liaised with him for the items they performed together.

In the first half of the program, the band performed various numbers displaying their range of abilities and featuring different sections. Bill Scott did many arrangements including one for ‘Bugle Call Rag’ which featured the four trumpet players and the final number before interval ‘Africa’ highlighted the percussionists and complicated rhythms.

After interval, Turaton joined the band and sang ‘In Flanders Field’ followed by a medley of Anzac songs beginning with ‘It's a Long Way to Tipperary’ and finishing with ‘Let Me Call You Sweetheart’. Shirley Ferguson has lately shown her talent for writing and composing and the next item was ‘Remembrance Day’ written by Shirley and arranged for the band by Bill Scott.

The concert concluded with ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ and a beautiful arrangement of ‘Abide With Me’ leaving the audience impressed with the skill of our local talented musicians and singers.

You will have another opportunity to enjoy such talent when they once again come together for Christmas Carols at Tatura, and then in the Queens Park Gardens the Sunday evening before Christmas.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL School Camp: Week 2 this term, saw Dhurringile PS head off to our city camp with Wunghnu, Waaia-Yalca South and Zeerust Primary Schools. The students were able to encounter many different experiences that are not available in the Goulburn Valley such as catching and riding trams, avoiding people when walking down the street and using multi-direction pedestrian crossings. Highlights of the camp for the students were riding on the Melbourne Star, visiting the Melbourne Zoo, shopping at the Queen Victoria market and visiting the Police Museum.

Shopping Tour: A huge thank you to everyone who supported our recent Melbourne shopping tour. Special thanks to the businesses who put our posters up in their windows and staff rooms. 26 ladies supported us by spending their hard-earned cash, with most of them coming home with their Christmas shopping nearly completed. It is anticipated that for 2019, our shopping tour will be the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup. Christmas Concert: This year our end of year concert will be held on Thursday, December 13 from 7pm at the Dhurringile Community Hall. Tatura Library News LIBRARY LINES Goulburn Valley Libraries and Ann Frank Australia proudly present: Let Me Be Myself, the story of Anne Frank, at the Shepparton Library from December 9.

The exhibition comprises images of Anne Frank, a positive female role model for tolerance, racial acceptance and integration, and uses the reflections of young people of today to demonstrate how Anne’s story still resonates. On display are photographs from her birth in 1929, up to her death in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945.

Also included are a replica of the Anne’s diary and a scale-model of the Frank family’s hiding place.

The second part of the exhibition centers around contemporary subjects. Five colourful modules contemporise the story of Anne Frank, showing how it is still relevant in today’s society. With discrimination still taking place on a daily basis all over the world, the youngsters who are shown in the exhibition speak about themselves and how they deal with today’s prejudices and discrimination. The contemporary part is complemented by two short films.

Shepparton Library Manager Corrine Hills is excited to be hosting “Let me be myself.”

She said, “Anne’s story is well known and her diary is a much-loved book. As well as telling her life story, this exhibition also highlights the publication of her diary and the inspiration it provides. We are expecting huge community interest, and are offering out-of-hours tours to meet the expected demand.”

The free exhibition will be held at the Shepparton Library, Marungi Street, from

December 9 until March 20, 2019, following the official launch on Friday, December 8.

A community launch will also be held on Saturday, December 9 at 11am. Goulburn Valley Libraries is able to bring this international exhibition to Shepparton with the generous support of the Greater Shepparton City Council, Soroptimist International of Shepparton and a donation from the Friends of the Shepparton Library. UNSOLVED MYSTERIES – ALUMINIUM WEDGE OF AIUD

In 1974, while digging a trench along the Mures River in Romania, workmen discovered two sets of mastodon bones eleven metres under sand near the city of Aiud. The mastodon was a large tusked mammal resembling an elephant that became extinct about 11,000 years ago. Excited by their discovery, the workers continued to dig and unearthed a wedge-shaped object weighing almost three kilograms. The wedge was scientifically tested in an archaeological institute in Lausanne, Switzerland and was found to be composed of 89 percent aluminium with traces of copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and nickel.

Aluminium does not occur naturally in nature and wasn’t manufactured until 1825, requiring at least 1000 degrees of heat. Upon examining the object, experts noted that there were two strange holes of different size along with a pair of arms. They speculated that the aluminium wedge had been used as a working instrument at one point in time due to tool marks on its lower section.

Something that confuses the issue is the fact that the wedge is covered with a thick oxide layer that has been dated at between 300 and 400 years old which is still a couple of hundred years before the first manufacture of aluminium. However, as geological evidence has dated the mastodon bones at approximately 10,000 years old, many people believe that the wedge has an alien origin. One person that supports this theory is Romanian ufologist Floring Gheorgita who believes that the artefact is part of the landing gear of an alien spacecraft.

However, there may be a more rational explanation. The wedge could be a tooth from a modern-day excavator bucket, the kind used by workers digging foundations

The results of metallurgical tests made on the wedge are consistent with modern 2000 series duralumin which oxidizes fairly rapidly, accounting for the aged appearance of the wedge, and which can be hardened to a degree similar to mild steel. Aluminium will not strike sparks which makes the alloy desirable for service in environments with combustible gases or vapours, such as the coal mines that flourished for a while in Romania. With a decline in coal mining, the excavators may have been turned to other uses and it’s quite likely that one of these excavators simply lost a tooth while digging the hole in Aiud.

It’s interesting to note that the Wedge was removed from public display in 1995 and hidden in an undisclosed location.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development Geraldine Christou, said the grants are a great opportunity for the community to obtain financial assistance for projects, activities or events that need funding and will start after April 17, 2019.

“Council provides assistance to community organisations for worthwhile projects that meet the criteria. There are lots of small groups in our municipality that could do with

a helping hand and we are keen to provide funds to see some of these projects get off the ground,” Mrs Christou said.

Greater Shepparton City Council is offering drop-in sessions for interested applicants to discuss their application with Council’s Grants Coordinator.

THE GERMANS ARE COMING Yes, the Germans are coming and the Tatura Historical Society are delighted.

First of all, representatives of our Society have been invited to attend the annual Dunera Luncheon in Melbourne on Tuesday, November 13. On the same day Tatura Museum will host 48 visitors from St. Christopher’s German Catholic Church and a busy week will culminate with the annual commemorative service at the German War Cemetery attended by dignitaries from the German Embassy in Canberra together with members of the German Templar Lutheran Group.

The “Dunera” was the ship used to transport young German Jews, wrongfully identified as enemy aliens, to Australia in 1940 and hundreds later settled in Australia and made significant contributions to our country and its development. Equally, the German Templar Society, after incarceration and subsequent settlement in Australia, have made wonderful contributions to the progress of a society we all enjoy.

Last month we enjoyed the company of 40 visitors on our annual tour of the Camp 1 prison site and one of the interested visitors was Imy Loebert whose husband was interred in Camp 3 during the war. We are also currently in discussions aimed at having some tours of Dhurringile Mansion next year.

TATURA GARDEN CLUB NEWS Members have been very busy in their gardens and they are looking spectacular this year. Before our last meeting, we visited Naomi’s garden in Tatura. Naomi has transformed her front lawn into a very beautiful and peaceful oasis. The garden was filled with lots of perennials, interesting and quirky sculptures and paving. There were lots of succulents on the porch as well. Thank you Naomi for sharing your garden with us.

Our annual club garden walk was held on November 3 where we visited three gardens in the local area which were all very different and reflective of their owner’s particular styles. It was great to see 35 members out and about enjoying the afternoon together. Many thanks to Christine Schott, Nicky Benton and Carol McFadzean for allowing us to visit and share their knowledge of gardening.

We also had a bus trip to Castlemaine on November 10 which was a great day enjoyed by 24 members. We visited the butterfly nursery and tearooms then three open gardens in the Castlemaine area. The weather was magic and we enjoyed a fabulous time wandering around some very inspirational gardens.

Our annual Xmas party is coming up on December 6 and all members are reminded to pay their money for the night at the next meeting on November 19 at 7.30pm We always welcome new members to come along and join us.

The club will be running a bus trip on February 2, 2019 which is open to all members of the public who would like to come along. The trip is to the Blue Lotus Water Garden at Yarra Junction. It features spectacular gardens over 14 acres with giant waterlilies, amazing lotuses and magical fairy garden.

Well worth a visit to this special garden.

FIRE DANGER PERIOD The introduction of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) declared Fire Danger Period on October 22 means fires cannot be lit in the open air. The CFA Fire Danger Period continues throughout summer until withdrawn by the CFA and restricts activities in the community to help prevent the risk of fires. Landowners should take immediate steps to reduce the risk of fire on their property and ensure it is well maintained throughout the season.

Once the Fire Danger Period has been declared you cannot light a fire in the open air without a permit or comply with certain requirements.

If you don't obtain a permit, you could be breaking the law and may be prosecuted.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Corporate Services Chris Teitzel says it is important landowners deal with any fire risks as soon as possible. “Potential fire hazards are a danger not only to the landowner’s property but also to their neighbours and their property, to livestock, crops and pets. We are entering another long, dry summer and the time to act is now. Vacant residential land should have fine fuel loads reduced by slashing and mowing grass, cleaning up leaves and twigs and removing any rubbish. Rural land should have sufficient fire breaks and all firefighting equipment should be serviced and ready to go,” said Mr Teitzel.

Mr Teitzel would like to remind landowners that trees and shrubs cannot be removed without consent from Council’s Planning department. “If you have already completed works, thank you for being proactive and please continue to maintain your land to protect everyone in the community from potential fire hazards,” said Mr Teitzel.

TOOLAMBA LIONS CLUB On November 13, Toolamba Lions were pleased to welcome First Vice District Governor Kumar Swaminathan to their meeting. Kumar has been a member of Lions since 1983 and has held many offices, first in his native Sri Lanka and later in Australia. Kumar spoke about seeing the work of Lions making a difference to people’s lives in Sri Lanka, through initiatives such as housing for elderly people with no families and vocational training for youth. He also spoke of the vision of the current District Governor team and their belief that Lions must be willing to work in new ways to attract and keep younger members.

OUTDOOR POOLS SCHEDULE With the weather warming up, the 2018-19 Greater Shepparton outdoor pool season at Tatura, Mooroopna and Merrigum pools will kick off on November 17 at 12.00pm. Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Active Living David Booth said maintenance staff have been working hard over the winter months at the pools. “All the pools are looking great for another big outdoor pool season,” Mr Booth said. “Once again, the seasonal pools will be a great place to cool down and have some fun. If you would like to get active at the pool this year, we will have a wide range of programs and activities just for you. There will be lots happening over summer from giant inflatables and water games for the kids, through to aqua aerobics and early morning swimming for the big kids at heart.

Don’t forget to get your seasonal pool membership passes which can be used at all three pools.”

For a full list of programs and activities check out your local pool or the Get Mooving Greater Shepparton App. Pools will remain open until the third weekend in March, with the final day of the summer pool season being on Sunday, March 17.

Tatura and Mooroopna Pools are open from 12pm to 7pm daily while Merrigum Pool is open Monday to Friday from 3.30pm to 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday 1pm to 7pm. Depending on weather conditions these times could charge. Extended operating hours will come into play from December 23.

COUNCIL’S ANNUAL REPORT NOW AVAILABLE The Greater Shepparton City Council 2017-2018 Annual Report is now available in a print version. The Annual Report was endorsed at the October Ordinary Council meeting and has been available on the Council’s website since then.

Greater Shepparton City Council CEO Peter Harriott said the Annual Report is an important publication that documents the last financial year for Council including achievements and financial statements. “For anyone who would like more detail on the services that Council offers to the community the Annual Report is a valuable resource. I encourage anyone wanting to learn more about Local Government and in particular their municipality, to have a read. You might be surprised at the range of services and activities in which Council is involved. The Annual Report also highlights our achievements over the last financial year. There are some major projects listed but also many minor projects of benefit to our small towns and neighbourhoods. We are proud of what we have been able to do for our community,” Mr Harriott said.

Anyone who would like a copy of the Annual Report can come into the council offices in Welsford Street to pick one up. It will also be available in the Shepparton, Mooroopna and Tatura libraries.

PROUD GRAND-PARENTS Jai Lemire (grandson of Laurie and Carol Merritt) recently competed in the Junior World Series Indoor Cricket Championships held in Christchurch, New Zealand. Jai was chosen after he represented Victoria in the 15 years and under age group at the National championships this year. Jai was one of seven Victorian 15-year-old players chosen to represent Australia after they won the National championships in Toowoomba in June.

Australia was one of five countries at the world series, the other being New Zealand, South Africa, England and Singapore. The Australian team performed extremely well at the tournament only losing one game to New Zealand in the first round. The Australian boys played South Africa in a hard fought out final and were successful in claiming the World Championship title.

Jai’s efforts throughout the tournament were outstanding. He consistently performed well with the bat and did not lose his wicket throughout the series. He was also successful in taking multiple wickets both as a bowler and wicket keeper. At the completion of the tournament, Jai was ranked statistically as the number one 15-year-old player in the world.

Gingerbread Biscuits

TRADITIONAL GINGERBREAD Though the biscuits I have made are plain, one can imagine how lovely they would look decorated for Christmas.

Ingredients: 150g Butter 1 tablespoon ground Ginger 1/2 cup Golden Syrup 1 teaspoon ground Cinnamon 1/2 cup Brown Sugar 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg 1 teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda 1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder 3 cups Plain Flour 1 Egg, lightly whisked Method: Place butter, golden syrup and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

Cook, stirring until sugar dissolves.

Bring to the boil, remove from heat, add bicarbonate of soda and stir until combined.

Transfer to a large heatproof bowl and set aside to cool.

Sift flour, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and baking powder over butter mixture.

Add the egg and stir until combined.

Turn onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until smooth.

Divide into two portions and shape each into a disc and cover with plastic wrap.

Place in fridge for 45 minutes until firm.

Roll one portion between 2 sheets of baking paper and using pastry cutters, cut shapes from the dough.

Place on lined trays and repeat with remaining portion.

Bake at 180 degrees for eight minutes. Leave on trays for five minutes before transferring to wire rack.

December GARDENING PLAN It is important, especially this month, to recognise the value of mulching and mulching materials. Using organic mulches can protect your soils from the harsh sun as well as adding structure to depleted soils, preserve moisture which reduces the need for irrigation and becomes an aid in weed prevention. Mulches increase microbial activity improving overall health of the soil and also improve crop production when used on vegetable gardens. Some suggestions for organic mulches would be Lucerne, pea-straw, straw, pine bark and bark chips or sugarcane mulch.

Watch out for Aphids at this time of year, especially on new growth and buds on roses, gardenia, citrus and vegetables. You can squash the aphids if there are only a few but in more severe cases, spray to control with Yates Bug Gun or Confidor. Powdery Mildew can also be present with warmer weather and rain falls. Treat this disease with a copper or sulphate based fungicide such as Kocide Copper Spray.

Replace all your tired spring flowering annuals with some fresh summer colour, petunias, portulacas, marigolds, cosmos and salvias are some suggestions that survive the summer heat. Always use a good quality potting mix to maximise their performance such as Tub and Terracotta or a Seasol potting mix.

Hint: Mulching the surface of the soil in your pots well help retain moisture through-out the hotter months. We have a lot to choose from in potted colours or seedlings.

Spring flowering shrubs and rambling climbers can be pruned back this month as their flowers finish. Banksia roses and wisteria can be cut back heavily if needed. Otherwise a light trim for azaleas and lilacs to maintain a good shape.

Hint: Mix dampened peatmoss and compost to make an ideal mulch for your azaleas and camellias through summer.

Hint: The product Seasol promotes vigorous flowering, fruiting and overall plant health. Seasol stimulates new root growth, helps the plants to build up resistance to disease, insect and fungal attack.

Seasol provides its benefits both through the plants foliage as well as the soil. Seasol is a tonic and not a fertiliser, which means it contains virtually no nitrogen or phosphorus so it can be used on natives as well as acid loving plants, roses and citrus.

Whether you need a tree for your yard, seedlings for your vegie garden, herbs for your balcony or potted flowers to brighten up your window sill, you will find it all at Viberts nursery.

There are two reasons for this. The main reason for your photo not being included will be the quality. We are receiving an increasing number of photos taken with mobile phones and unfortunately, the quality of some of these is not suitable for printing. The quality of photos taken with a camera is usually good enough for printing but you need to ensure that any photos taken with a mobile phone are of a suitable standard. Most of the problems with poor photo quality appear

to be with older mobile phones.

The second reason why your photo might not have been included will be available space in the Bulletin for that particular month. This is entirely dependent on the layout required for the page your article will be on and on occasion, there is simply not enough space to also include the photo.

DROMANA EXERSITE While strolling along with my father on the walking track at Dromana beach on the Mornington Peninsula, we approached what we thought was a child's playground, only to find it was in actual fact part of a fitness trail. Having never seen the likes of this before we were interested to note there were placards showing different exercises to be done on the permanent equipment installed there. The largest sign was a Heart Check Cardiovascular Fitness Guide, which stated, ‘To Be Fit, Think F.I.T.’ and continued to list Frequency, Intensity and Time details necessary to achieve the maximum cardiovascular benefit.

Frequency - Exercise at least three times per week, on an every-otherday basis.

Intensity - Exercise hard enough to elevate your pulse rate into the 'training zone'. Research has shown that exercising at an intensity below your training zone will not produce much cardiovascular improvement.

Exercising at an intensity above your zone will be hard to maintain and may be harmful for beginners. Your heart rate determines if it is necessary to speed up or slow down during exercise, but as another guide to your maximum desirable intensity you should always be able to carry on a conversation while exercising - if not, ease up.

Time - Maintain your heart rate within your training zone for at least 20 consecutive minutes. Shorter periods will not produce much improvement.

While we were reading the different signs, a young man interrupted his run along the track we had walked to use the bars before continuing on his way and this made us wonder how much the area is used. Seems a good idea to me and I send accolades to the local council for installing such an amenity.

10. Yet another Christmas miracle!

FRUIT FLY ERADICATION Greater Shepparton City Council has been working with the Goulburn Murray Regional Fruit Fly Coordinator to eradicate unmanaged fruit trees and is targeting prickly pear plants next. Queensland fruit fly is attracted to various strands of prickly pear and it damages fruit within the region. As the weather continues to warm up, Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) is on the look-out for food and suitable habitat to lay their eggs.

Trap numbers are increasing and the project Field Officer for Shepparton has already visited 40 residential properties in the Shepparton area to assist property owners in controlling rising fruit fly numbers. Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Fruit Fly Coordinator Ross Abberfield said a combined community effort was required to limit the spread of fruit fly. “As part of our Area Wide Management strategy in the Goulburn Murray Valley, we all have a role to play in the early control of fruit fly populations this spring,” Mr Abberfield said. “Removal of unwanted and unmanaged habitat is an excellent way to permanently reduce fruit fly breeding areas. So far, 539 free fruit tree removals generated by public requests in the Greater Shepparton urban areas, have been completed.

The effects of fruit fly in our region can be significant and can have detrimental impacts on the region’s export industry. We encourage the community to maintain fruit trees on their property to ensure our horticultural industry is protected. In order to protect the $620m per annum horticultural industry it is essential we work with the community to control the outbreak of Queensland Fruit Fly.” Greater Shepparton City Council has a strong focus on building the region’s international market and is committed to the Regional Fruit Fly Management Plan and associated actions to control fruit fly. Council is represented on the governance group that oversees the implementation of this plan. Greater Shepparton City Council was successful in gaining a grant to remove a number of host trees located on Council road reserves as guided by the Regional Fruit Fly Coordinator.

BPW GATHERING Fifteen former members of BPW Tatura gathered for their biannual get together recently. They met at the Toolamba Pub for lunch and enjoyed catching up. Although BPW Tatura some eight years ago the friendships made stay strong and these gatherings are always something to look forward to. Thanks to Carol Ryan for organising the event.
