BOOK REVIEW I Can Jump Puddles

by Alan Marshall This moving story of Alan Marshall’s heroic mastering of crippling poliomyelitis to lead the life of a normal boy in the Australian bush will remain a classic of Australian writing. It is not only the experience of a boy who overcame adversity. It is a whole philosophy of life against a background of the Australian bush and its animals, folklore and its outback characters. *I hadn’t read this book previously but I’m sure many of you had. What an inspiration to one and all! I’m happy to tell you that it’s an absolute classic but you would already know that. Kerry Gardner

JOCELYN MACROW The newest member of the Tatura Area Community Bulletin group is Jocelyn Macrow. She was introduced to the Committee at the January meeting as the new creator of the Kids Page starting with the February issue. Jocelyn and her husband Terry have only recently moved to Dhurringile from Watervale in the Clare Valley, SA. They both hope to meet new people and become active members of the Tatura community. Jocelyn is a Special Education Teacher and she will be working part-time this year at a school in Shepparton. She also has a daughter and two grandchildren living in Melbourne.

A THANK YOU TO LOCAL VOLUNTEERS

Santa With Group Representatives

Jenny and Frank Lagozzino from the Top Pub arranged a Thank You lunch for the different volunteer groups in our town. This was held in December and all attending were served with a very nice Christmas meal, complete with dessert and fruit platters. Santa delivered a token gift to each person and Jenny had laminated a Thank You card for every individual. On that she wrote: “On behalf of Lagozzino’s Top Pub and local citizens of Tatura we sincerely thank you for all your dedication and hard work. Your generous time and commitment to help others is what makes this town such a magnificent community for all who live here or visit our town. Thank you.” There are certainly many in our town who deserve recognition and it was obvious those present at the lunch appreciated this kind gesture. - Janice Dreyer

MAKE EVERY DROP OF WATER COUNT Goulburn Valley Water Managing Director Peter Quinn said it was everyone’s responsibility to use water wisely and sustainably. “Our climate is changing and we can’t rely on rainfall like in the past, so we need everyone to adopt an ‘every drop counts’ approach to using water,” he said. “If everyone takes action to reduce their water usage and make little changes around the household, the water savings will add up, as together, we can make a difference. With the changing climatic conditions we’re experiencing in Northern Victoria, water conservation is more important than ever and we all have a role to play to ensure its sustainability for future generations. We’re asking people to be conscious of where they’re using water and look at how they can reduce that. There are plenty of options to reduce water use that won’t impact on your lifestyle, but can easily save bucketloads. Check for leaks and fix dripping taps, use a pool cover to reduce evaporation, turn the tap off while you’re brushing your teeth and catch water inCENTRE a basin while washing TATURA MEDICAL

Goulburn Valley Water is urging residents to ensure they make every drop of water count this summer, with temperatures again predicted to be warmer and drier than average. Permanent Water Saving Rules are in place across the state, and residents are being urged to be water wise and consider how much water they’re using around the home. Water demand is already trending higher than in previous years - last month we delivered 3545 megalitres of water, the highest volume since 2015/16 and a 19 per cent increase on the December delivery total in 2018. Residents used on average 530 litres per person, per day in December 2019, compared with an average of 434 litres per person per day in December 2018. In November, we delivered 2779 megalitres, which is the highest volume of water produced in November in the past five years. In November, residents across the Goulburn Valley used 415 litres per person, per day – averaged across the region and month.

vegetables, there’s plenty of ways you can make a difference. A lot of our towns in southern and south-eastern regions rely on water sourced from reservoirs, and those storages have experienced lower inflows in the past two years as a result of a warmer and drier climate. People can make sure every drop of water they use counts by following the Permanent Water Saving Rules, which includes watering the garden between 6pm and 10am, using a blower or a broom to clean hard surfaces, and use a bucket and a leak-free hose fitted with a trigger nozzle to wash vehicles. People in the Goulburn Valley showed some excellent water saving behaviours during the Millennium Drought – now is the time to reintroduce your greywater system and other water saving measures. Simple things around the home can save hundreds of litres per day – cutting your shower down to four minutes can save 40 litres a day and turning the tap off while you brush your teeth will help save 10 litres a minute.”

Farewell Jo - It was with both happiness and a touch of sadness that we held our farewell dinner for Rotarian Jo Burgess. We will miss Jo very much in our club as she has been a tremendous asset and we have been very fortunate to have her as a member of the Rotary Club of Tatura. Jo has been a long serving member, having joined in 2000. She was President in 20032004 and has held various positions over that time, including secretary on numerous occasions. We wish Jo all the best for the future. “We may be losing a member but not a friend,” said President Bill Purcell.

Tat 200 - The Rotary Club of Tatura once again played an important role in the Tat 200 Bike Ride. Members were responsible for helping with manning the registration desk early in the morning although I’m not sure if manning is the right word when women are doing the job. Other members were responsible for putting up all the road signs on the previous day so that participants could find their way around the district. They also assisted as roadside marshals, manned a drink station and were in charge of transporting all the bikes back from Murchison for those who wished to enjoy the hospitality of the Murchison Winery. The funds that Rotary receives for their help in this annual event go towards specific Local projects. - Bill Purcell, President

TOOLAMBA BRIDGE NOW OPEN Greater Shepparton City Council is pleased to advise the Toolamba Bridge is now open to the public. Works to increase the bridge strength started in May this year. The bridge limit, which had been 2 tonne, has now been increased to 9 tonne. The costs of the works totalled $1.6M, which was partly funded under the Fixing Country Roads Grant from the State Government through Regional Roads Victoria. “I’d like to say a big thank you to Greater Shepparton residents and in particular the Toolamba community for their patience and cooperation while these important works were undertaken,” Council Director Infrastructure Phil Hoare said. “While the scope of the work was greater than originally anticipated, we are pleased to have the bridge reopened prior to Christmas as planned. The bridge provides an important link across the Goulburn River and these improvements will ensure safer travel throughout the region over the Christmas period and beyond.” Works included upgrades to the bridge deck, replacement and upgrading of the guard railing, repair or replacement of most of the below deck structural components and anchoring of the bridge abutment at the Toolamba end.

GENERATIONS OP SHOP The Generations Op Shop has been able to present yet another cheque to a worthy local cause. This time the recipient has been the Tatura CFA, who have been given $2,000 and I was invited to be present to witness the handover from Neville Crowe to the CFA's secretary Bill Stockdale. Neville stressed to me that they are only able to do this because of the tremendous support of the local community and the shop's volunteers. Their generosity is what generates the extra that can be given to worthy groups, as well as assistance to individuals. - Janice Dreyer

TOOLAMBA GROWTH PLAN

TATURA

The Early Years - Education skids, or rather trees of a foot through, he would have got over his difficulty in a much cheaper and more expeditious manner. The official Roman Catholic school was built in 1900. The stone of the Sacred Heart School was laid on May 8 by the Very Rev. T. J. O’Connell, and before long a secondary school, St Mary’s College, was opened. These events influenced the Anglicans to look at providing their own school education. At a meeting held in December 1903 a motion “to assist the Board of Guardians of the Church of England to establish a church school in Tatura, to be under the supervision of the deaconess’s institute” was carried unanimously. Bishop Langley, as reported in the Free Press, said “after dwelling of the necessity for religious training of children, warned parents of the alleged dangers of sending children to Roman Catholic institutions to be educated. He said it was asserted there was no attempt at proselytism, but he did not believe the assertion. He did not blame their Roman Catholic friends, for they were acting according to their lights.” Accordingly, in January 1904, two schools commenced their classes in the Mechanics Institute. Rev. C. H. Zercho was principal at the Tatura Grammar School for Boys and Miss Eileen Watson and Virginia Parker were in charge of the Church of England Deaconess’ High School (Music and Singing a specialty). In July, after the mid-winter vacation, the latter re-opened in new premises in Casey Street, and by 1908 it was enabled to erect a new building on a block of land east of the Tatura Butter Factory. By this time the school was taking a limited number of boarders, and Zercho had become the principal as the boy’s school had folded up. After Zercho departed from Tatura the girl’s school also folded. - Source: Tatura and the Shire of Rodney, W.H Bossence (available for purchase from the Tatura Museum)

In 1876 a school inspector assessed the structure of the school at Tatura as being totally inadequate but after four years had passed and nothing was done, seventeen frustrated and seething parents wrote to the Minister of Education urging removal of the school and the construction of a new one four miles south of the town. Their letter pointed out that “school No. 1441 and called the Tatura State School is on the Murchison Road, and is a distance of some two miles from the centre of the township, and the road to and from after a few hour’s rain makes it impossible for children of tender years to attend school. We find on enquiry that the average attendance at the school is 42, and we also find that there are 60 children in the immediate township of the required age.” In September 1879, a Roman Catholic school was opened at Tatura with 40 pupils, considerable public support and with the services of Luke Flanagan, late head-teacher at the Toolamba North school. The school was opened in Flanagan’s home in Ross Street, where he was supported by his wife. Attendance at Toolamba North immediately slumped from 60 children to 10. Not until January 1885 was a State School opened in the township. A few months afterwards the old building at Fuzzard’s was removed to James Crawford’s paddock to become the Toolamba South School even though it was actually situated west of the town. It was only many years later that it was renamed Toolamba West. The Tatura Herald reported, “We hope the new school at Toolamba South is opened with more ceremony than took place in the opening of the new state school in Tatura. So far as the removing of the said school, we have certainly seen much larger buildings removed without calling into requisition thirty-two bullocks. Had the contractor done with the private residence as he is about to do with the school, that is put wheels under it instead of trying to draw it on

Greater Shepparton City Council is inviting the community to give feedback on the Draft Toolamba Growth Plan between December 18, 2019 and February 17, 2020. The Draft Plan can be downloaded using the link below. Toolamba was identified as an area of future growth in the Greater Shepparton Housing Strategy 2011. Although past growth has been gradual, a number of landowners have indicated that they wish to rezone and subdivide substantial tracts of land to the west of Toolamba in the coming years. In addition, Stage 3 of the construction of the Goulburn Valley Highway Shepparton Bypass includes an interchange at Bridge Road, Toolamba. Although construction timeframes are yet-to-be-determined, the potential impacts of residential demand increases the importance of ensuring that growth in the Toolamba townships is appropriate and sustainable. Ethos Urban Pty Ltd was appointed to prepare the Draft Toolamba Growth Plan in February 2019. Pre-draft consultation was conducted in May 2019, and the resulting Conversation Report can also be downloaded from Council’s website. Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development, Geraldine Christou, said residents’ feedback is an important component of the Draft Growth Plan. “There are a lot of factors that have to be taken into consideration in planning for the future, so having the community’s ‘on the ground’ perspective is imperative to maximise collective benefits and minimise potential issues,” she said. Following the consultation period, the Draft Growth Plan will be revised to reflect comments received before being considered for adoption by Council in mid-2020.

Comments can also be submitted via email to council@shepparton.vic.gov.au, by post to Greater Shepparton City Council, Locked Bag 1000, Shepparton VIC 3632, or through Council’s website http://greatershepparton. Want to learn

BIGGER AND BETTER NEW HOME Mat Langley started his electrical apprenticeship with Geoff Reed and continued working there for fifteen years. As many of you would be aware, he then took over the business and has recently moved to larger premises at 45-49 Williams Street. Now dealing in generators as well as the other work he does, there has become a need for much more room. His new showroom is a work in progress but is already displaying different switches and other product ranges available. Having diversified a little since taking over, all has been going well for the company, currently having thirteen staff when it was originally only nine, so the supervisor, Corey, has plenty to deal with. Along the refrigeration line, there is now a qualified refrigeration mechanic on staff, dealing with milk vats, cool rooms, air conditioning and repairs. His generators are used for temporary power events, weddings, dairy break downs and are currently being used at the bush fires.

Corey, Terri and Mat

Mat grew up here in Tatura, attended the local primary school and played footy for the town. Having an 18-month-old son and new baby on the way, he doesn’t have much spare time but tries to get away when possible. Terri, who runs the office efficiently, started working with Geoff eight years ago and continued on with Mat. She commented to me on the good feedback they get from locals. Supporting all the local sporting clubs by sponsoring the golf, tennis, footy, cricket and bocce, they are certainly a good local business and therefore deserve us to support them. - Janice Dreyer

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIPS The Rotary Club of Tatura presented two scholarships for 2020 to students from the Sacred Heart School at the awards ceremony, following the end of year mass for 2019. The scholarships were awarded to two year 5 students for showing a positive attitude to all aspects of school. The recipients were Monique Wind and Tennyson Smith. Tatura Rotary Club plans to continue and expand on these scholarships in future years. Rotary President Mr Bill Purcell said, “The best thing that you can do for your children is to give them a good education.”

The Goulburn Valley West Group, consisting of eight local branches, will hold their February Conference and Annual General Meeting on Thursday, February 13 at Harston Hall. Marie Vassallo, the State Treasurer, will be in attendance. Election of Office Bearers for the coming year will take place. The Guest speaker is Michelle from Shepparton Family and Financial Services who will speak on No Interest Loan Schemes. These help out people on low incomes (Newstart or Youth Allowance) for purchase of essential goods and services. Along with the already nominated Welfare Items, we are now asking all members to please bring along non-perishable goods to the Conference to be donated to this organisation. Our Group has a new Branch of CWA at Merrigum called the Merrigum Blossoms and they meet on the first Saturday of the month at the Merrigum Fire Brigade clubrooms at 2.00 pm. They would love more new members to swell their numbers, so for details on the new branch, contact our Group President. CWA does a lot work behind the scenes helping the homeless and disadvantaged and has donated handbags of toiletries and personal items, children’s activities packs, beanies, clothes to name a few, to Shepparton Family and Financial services, CASA, Vinnies and other organisations throughout the year. Group Craft finished on a high with a Christmas Luncheon held on November 20 at the Tatura Community House and was hosted by the CWA Potters. We were treated to a lovely lunch provided by all members, a gift of Christmas cake, a quiz on Christmas Carols and there was a popular vote competition for a handmade Christmas decoration and lucky prizes of packs of fabric and trims. Group Craft has been well supported in 2019 and we had a great year learning new skills and making new friendships. Group Craft is held on the third Wednesday of the month starting at 9.00 a.m. until 12.45 p.m. and is held at the Tatura Community House. Cost $2.00. We would welcome new members who may be interested in joining CWA to consider coming along. LOCAL BOY BRINGS HIS BUSINESS HOME Having grown up in Tatura, attending school here and working at IGA for five years, James Waters has now opened up his fifth gym in his home town. James has operated as an independent personal trainer in the GV region for the last seven years. After three years in the industry, James opened Mooroopna Fitness Studio (MFS), which was the first locally owned 24-hour gym in the area. With continuous drive, he completed a full expansion within the first year of opening and this was followed by a new location in Shepparton, one at Kialla and another at Kialla Lakes. His goal has always been simple - to be ‘Not Just Another Gym’, providing the best for every single one of their members as individuals. Presumably those in Tatura will benefit from this at the new gym in Hogan Street, opposite the post office. - Janice Dreyer

ROTARY HITS A HIGH NOTE The Rotary Club of Tatura has donated some of the funds raised by a trivia night to the Murchison Primary School. Principal Karen Goodwin, was delighted to receive the donation on behave of the school at the club’s December meeting. The funds will be used to purchase more musical instruments to add to the school’s collection. Karen is a firm believer that music assists students to engage and improve their learning abilities. “These funds are very much appreciated. Rotary does a fantastic job in our local community,” Karen said. Karen Goodwin and Bill Purcell

AROUND TATURA

30 Years Ago… Speaking to more than sixty local Italians at the inaugural meeting of the Tatura Senior Italian Citizens Club, the Director of Aged Services, Mr Frank Di Blasi said how important it was for aged migrants to be united as a group if they wanted to show local and state government structures that they exist. The formation of the group would allow the local Italian community to take vision of the increasing number of aged Italians in the whole of the state and the problems associated with the language and culture of elderly Italians with a limited knowledge of the English language. ***** Rodney Shire Council has received a petition about an intersection where repeated accidents have occurred over many years. Thirty-four residents and users of the Merrigum-Ardmona and Byrneside-Gillieston Roads intersection signed the petition. They said there had been an increasing number of accidents, including a fatality and further accidents were feared. ***** Tatura is gearing up for Australia’s first ever International Dairy Week to be held at the Showgrounds in late January. The week will feature a National Holstein-Friesian Show and an international convention with over 500 cattle invading the showgrounds. ***** Tatura’s Marg Phelan and Harston’s June Kriesfeld-Jones were successful in the TK 2 class of the women’s veteran 40 years and over event at the annual Red Cross Murray River Canoe Marathon. The pair completed the 403km course in 37 hours defeating their nearest rivals by five hours. They raised $2,075 for Red Cross by running street stalls and selling raffle tickets prior to the marathon. They said that without the magnificent support from their ground crew they would not have achieved such success. ***** Future Tatura Court cases will now be held in Shepparton following the recent closure of the Tatura Court. The acting manager for the North-East Region for the Law Department, Mr Dave McCann, said the Tatura court house would no longer function as a regular magistrate’s court, but the building would be retained and some cases which could not be fitted in at Shepparton might be heard there. *****

The Tatura team has completed a hat-trick of wins over the Kyabram side in the annual Doug Pyke memorial cricket clash at Tatura. Star of the match was Merrigum veteran Bruce Andrews who made 96 for the Tatura side, helping his team score 187. In reply Kyabram could only manage 7-150. The match is held annually to honour the late Doug Pyke who was a former Tatura captain and KDCA stalwart. ***** The Tatura Post Office is rapidly becoming a one-stop shop. Customers can now pay their SEC, Gas and Fuel accounts, and their Ambulance Service subscriptions. They can also apply for passports, buy traveller’s cheques, pay departure tax and take out AMP travel insurance. Tatura postal manager John Crilly said the use of electronic counter equipment had enabled the expansion of services. ***** Tatura resident Ian Glover is Rodney Shire’s Citizen of the Year, with North Mooroopna Guide Leader Judi McClure the Junior Citizen. Cr Coldwell, who presented the awards, said Mr Glover was nominated for his outstanding service and contribution to the local community over many years. Ian Glover was heavily involved with the establishment of the Irrigation and Local History Museum at Tatura. Judi McClure was described as a credit to the Guiding Movement and her family. - Source: Tatura Guardian Newspaper

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL The last term in 2019 was full of learning and special activities for all the students and teachers at TPS. Some of the highlights were the Tabloid Sports, the End-of-Year Concert, the Grade 6 Graduation, the 2020 Foundation transition days and our swimming sessions at the Tatura Pool. We celebrated at our final assembly with two special presentations. Firstly, Damian Drum kindly presented the School Captains with three new flags to fly proudly on our new flag poles. He spoke to the students and parents about leadership and stayed to address the senior students after the assembly. Garry Alexander was our other special guest who represented Mooroopna Kiwanis. Every term he presents the Kiwanis Terrific Kids Awards and we are very grateful to the club for their continued support of our students. Our Grade 6 students are now moving to secondary school and we wish them every success as they expand their horizons and develop their learning even more, knowing they have had a great start at TPS. Members of our wider community will have noticed that the central playground area is nearing completion and we are looking forward to having the space fully utilised in Term 1. Another change that you will notice is the new signage that has appeared around the school. We now have our name proudly displayed at the entrances again. We thank Lions for their continuing program of awareness of the fruit fly problem and have erected the big yellow signs to remind us to be responsible in this regard. The children will undertake another interactive session this semester with Lions members.

Damian Drum with the School Captains

As we say goodbye to 2019, we want to extend a farewell to some staff who are leaving us: James Nihill, Billie Kovacs, Fulvia Curtis, Maggie Borrelli and Greg Cowan. As we wish them all the best as they all move onto other ventures, we also welcome the following new staff: Fiona Smith and Carlie Whitford. As you receive this Bulletin, school will be starting on Wednesday, January 29 (Grades 1 to 6) and our new Foundation students will be starting on Thursday, January 30. We are looking forward to seeing you all then.

CAMPING ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS I was asked recently if I could reprint my ‘Camping Advice For Beginners’ because the camping season is upon us once again. As I prefer not to simply reprint old material, I thought I would re-write and update it by including several new ideas and suggestions. Novice campers believe they go on camping holidays for peace and quiet; ‘to get away from it all’. However, popular holiday towns and locations have a higher population density than Bourke Street in the middle of peak hour. The average house block would equal the accommodation allotted to twelve families at a camping ground, which is a greater concentration of people per square metre than any third world slum town. Prisoners of war crowded together in similar conditions would be in serious breach of the Geneva Convention. At some stage of their camping trip, holiday-makers should not be surprised to see the Red Cross handing out food parcels and taking photographs for future camping crime trials. The only people who actually manage to get away from it all are those hardy souls who go ‘camping up the river’ and have to make do with digging their own toilets, carrying in all their own supplies and doing without electricity unless they also bring along a generator. I call these people the cockroaches of humanity, and I mean this as a term of endearment as they would be the only humans capable of surviving a nuclear holocaust. Novice campers are easily identified as they are the ones who turn off their lights prior to midnight fully expecting they’ll get some sleep. However, sounds that are normally muted by the average brick wall, travel easily through thin canvas, often achieving some degree of magnification in the process. Babies crying, children screaming, dogs barking, revellers laughing, music blasting, lovers loving, sleepers snoring and mosquitoes whining, all combine to add sleep deprivation

by John Kriesfeld

to the long list of camping woes. However, if you’re a novice camper and still determined to ‘get back to nature,’ the best advice you can receive is in regard to the humble amenities block. The location of the family camp site in regard to the amenities block is pivotal to the success of the entire holiday. It is important to find the Goldilocks zone, one that is just right. Too far away and you could find yourself in your pyjamas, stumbling up and down a steep hillside in the dark with rain dripping off the trees or negotiating a desperate path through a maze of tent pegs and caravans during the extreme heat of the day in the full knowledge that your bowels could explode at any moment. Seasoned campers often joke about the need to commence the long trek to the toilets well before their bodies start sending the required signals. This is the camping version of toilet humour. It is not uncommon to see families roped together, stumbling towards the distant light of the shower block, their faithful dog nipping at the heels of any stragglers as the leader calls out meaningless words of encouragement. Some campers have reportedly spent the majority of their holiday in-transit between their camp site and the toilets. Although they return home well-tanned and extremely fit, their holiday snapshots tend to be fairly onedimensional. Seasoned campers are fully aware of the comfortable distance that allows for a harmonious holiday. Being located too close to the amenities block can also destroy the tranquil holiday mood. Unpleasant odours from overworked plumbing and drains seem to waft continually through nearby campsites no matter which direction the wind is blowing. These odours usually strengthen around mealtimes affecting even the heartiest appetite. The arrival of guests is also a signal for these odours to increase in intensity. You can put on

a brave face and dress up your holiday with all sorts of bright adjectives but your guests always know the truth and invariably contrive to leave early. All amenities blocks have been designed so that doors to the shower and toilet cubicles automatically bang shut on both entering and leaving, with maximum acoustical penetration of nearby campsites. The natural bodily reaction of campers to the local drinking water and shared barbecue facilities will ensure that the toilet door symphony will play continually throughout the long hours of the night, preventing nearby campers from ever reaching the deep sleep zone. Another important factor to be considered is the law of social magnetism affecting adolescent bodies which ensures that they will always congregate in the area immediately adjacent to the amenity’s door. From this prized vantage point, they will proceed to shout, yell, laugh, whistle, fight, argue, sing and swear loudly for hours on end, regardless of the time of day or night. It is a strange but noteworthy fact that all of these children appear to be orphans. There are two eternal truths concerning the interior of the amenities block. The first is that they will always smell of stale urine and disinfectant and the second is that there will always be dank pools of water on the floor. Very few toilet and shower doors can actually be latched shut, making relaxed musings virtually impossible. The tongue and groove locking system never quite meets and often gives the appearance of having been deliberately constructed that way. The art of doors never quite fitting has been honed to an extremely high level so that they resist all attempts at pushing and lifting, even by the strongest individual. Campers can take pot luck on the availability of toilet paper but experienced campers usually take their own. Wash basins never

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, January 2020 - Page 15 Camping advice for beginners continued... have plugs and the water either takes an eternity to reach a temperature where it can be loosely called tepid or it scaulds the campers’ hands immediately the tap is turned on. The interior lights are normally controlled by an automatic sensor and only turn themselves on well after pitch darkness has been achieved. However, the activity that separates the men from the boys is the shower. Hot water availability is a random variable and the fact that the pressure will ebb and flow and alternately be scaulding and freezing is something that even novice campers will be expecting. No, the great challenge begins once they have turned off the shower and reached for their towel. Shower cubicles are designed so that the shower spray will always travel as far as the discarded clothing, no matter how strategically they are placed. The slope of the floor also guarantees that it will be exceedingly wet under foot. Novice campers and young children invariably emerge defeated with soaked underwear, wet socks and an overall air of damp dejection. A smart gymnastic coach will one day base their Olympic gold medal program on the acrobatic routine of the seasoned camper as they hop, climb and balance their way to fully clad, dry success. It is interesting to note that an inverse relationship slowly develops as the novice campers’ experience grows with each successive (if not successful) camping trip. The initial high and often unrealistic expectations held by the novice will quickly dissipate until parity is eventually achieved between illusion and disillusion. This will ensure that future camping holidays will successfully live up to the low expectations held now that the novice has graduated to seasoned camper. He is now ready to invite a few novice friends and their families to join him on his next camping holiday so that he can sit back and enjoy the fun. It is at this stage that his expectations for an enjoyable holiday will once again begin to rise.

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE QUILTERS On December 2, the Tatura Community House Quilters and the Toolamba Craft Group hosted the Annual Regional Christmas Gathering for patch-workers and quilters at the Ballantyne Centre. Over 100 ladies and a couple of gentlemen met to have a fun filled day of sewing and socialising. Quilters came from far and near with groups from Deniliquin, Cobram, Numurkah, Echuca and even some ladies came from Melbourne to enjoy the day meeting like-minded people. The guest speaker was Leanne Button and she was brilliant. All guests on the day received a table gift and a lucky door prize as well as some guests receiving gifts from our special giveaway. Quite a few guests brought along their own quilts for the Show n’ Tell which were enjoyed by all. As a special fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation Breast Care Nurses at GV Health, we had a rummage table. Items donated for the rummage table were sold for gold coin donations with $500 raised and donated to the Nurses. We also had some great stall holders and we would like to acknowledge their support. Big thanks to Meg & Mog Patchwork from Rushworth, Gillian Schoenborn, Robyn and Tony Ford, and Julie from the ‘Days from Girls’ charity. Even though it was a freezing cold, windy day and the power went out in the afternoon, we had plenty of food and lots of fun. We all thought the Ballantyne Centre was the perfect venue for our gathering. We all look forward to attending the 2020 Christmas Gathering at Girgarre next December. - Anne Doller

VALE NANCY TAYLOR Nancy Taylor’s story by the Taylor family.

They were married on January 29, 1957 and lived in Coombs Road where they milked cows. They worked there until they saved up enough money to move to Bartlett Street where they raised four children, Kerry, Glenn, Kim and Andrea. The house was rather small with only one bathroom and one toilet but we all managed. Our generation was shown how to work hard and do your best, always use what you’ve got and never waste anything. We saw what we had and didn’t ask for anything more. It was a safe home of unconditional love. Nancy would do the SPC and Ardmona cannery season to help us get through school and pay the bills and rates. The children eventually grew up and left home but our parents were always involved in our lives. Our dad passed away twenty years ago but was able to leave mum enough money for her independence. Nancy and Max’s legacy is eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Nancy had many good friendships that were solid and lasted a lifetime. At home, her garden was her life and she was constantly tending and fussing over it, never failing to find new plants free of charge. She was a wiz on crossword puzzles and jigsaws and she loved reading, going to the pictures, trying out new recipes and travelling. She gave back to the community when she could with Meals on Wheels and knitting poppies for Anzac Day. Every time she went down the street, she’d love a chat and a cuddle and she was thankful for living her whole life in Tatura. Even now, in our time of sorrow, the Taturian Angles are showing their love and compassion for which we are very grateful. She loved life in the good times and the bad.

Nancy was born in Tatura on August 5, 1938 and grew up on a farm in Dhurringile. She went to the Dhurringile Primary School and we were constantly told about the six-mile bike ride to school and back, no matter what the weather was. After the family moved to Hunter Street in Tatura, Nancy left school and did house cleaning and cleaning at the Criterion Hotel. She found love after Max Taylor, a carpenter, caught her eye.

The family would like to pass on the following thankyous. Thank you for being Nancy’s friend. Thank you to the doctors that helped her. Thank you to the Carers of Calvary. Thank you to the paramedics and the hospitals that cared for her. Thank you to Tatura for being a wonderful little town with a huge heart that kept Nancy safe, protected and loved.

TATURA OPEN STUDIOS Sue Graves, Lynne Hume, Sharron Kriesfeld, Linda Lee and Narelle Snelling were five Tatura artists who opened their art studios for a day on Dec 1. The turnout, on such a miserable day, was astonishing. People came from as far away as Bendigo, Euroa, Elmore and Kialla, along with great support from Tatura locals. The girls were able to donate $242 to the Sacred Heart school as a result. So, we would all like to say a very heartfelt thank you to all who supported us and we hope to do it all again next year with more artists involved.

NEW POOL REGULATIONS New State Government legislation introduced in December to help reduce the incidence of drownings of young children will require Greater Shepparton residents to adhere to new mandatory safety regulations for private pools and spas. It is now mandatory for property owners in Greater Shepparton where a swimming pool or spa is located to register their pool or spa with Greater Shepparton City Council before June 1, 2020. The changes will bring Victoria in line with similar pool and spa fencing requirements in other states. Following registration, owners are also now required to obtain and lodge a compliance certificate for the safety of their pool or spa barrier every four years. Owners will need to engage a registered building surveyor or building inspector to carry out an inspection and issue the compliance certificate. The inspection fee will be a ‘fee for service’ arrangement provided by the Building Surveyor or Building Inspector being engaged to provide this service. It is recommended to confirm the cost of the inspection before engaging the appropriate person. Once a pool or spa is registered, Council will notify owners of the due date for the first

certificate of pool barrier compliance. Owners are required to arrange an inspection and lodge the certificate with their local Council by the due date. Council’s Manager Building and Planning, Colin Kalms, said the new State Government legislation will help ensure the safety of Greater Shepparton residents. “The new regulations will improve water safety throughout our region as we enter the summer,” he said. “Council will be available to assist members of our community through the process. We look forward to working with the community in improving water safety for people of all ages, but in particular children.” Pool and spa owners in Greater Shepparton have until June 1, 2020 to register their pool or spa with Council. The initial cost to register a pool or spa in Greater Shepparton is $79.20 and is payable at registration. A further fee of $20.44 will need to be paid to lodge a Certificate of Barrier Compliance. This is payable at the time of lodgement of the Certificate. The due date to lodge a Certificate of Barrier Compliance is dependent on the date of pool construction and is determined as part of the registration process. Lodgement

and registration fees are set by the State Government. Pools and spas constructed in Greater Shepparton after June 1, 2020 must be registered within 30 days after issue of occupancy permit or certificate of final inspection. The Relevant Building Surveyor following a mandatory inspection upon completion of the barrier construction can issue a Certificate of Barrier Compliance at the time of issuing a Certificate of Final inspection. It is an offence not to register a pool or spa. For more information, please visit: https://www. vba.vic.gov.au/consumers/swimming-pools Inspection and lodgement of certificate of barrier compliance for pools and spas following the initial registration: For pools and spas constructed on or before June 30, 1994, a certificate of barrier compliance must be lodged by June 1, 2021. For pools and spas constructed between July 1, 1994 and April 30, 2010, a certificate of barrier compliance must be lodged by June 1, 2022. For pools and spas constructed between May 1, 2010 and May 31, 2020, a certificate of barrier compliance must be lodged by June 1, 2023.

TATFEST 2020

Come to Mactier Gardens on Sunday, March 1, and join us for a day of fun, entertainment, and food. This festival is brought to you by the Lions Club of Tatura Inc. Last year was somewhat of a struggle with the very hot weather so hopefully this year will be a little milder. Just in case, we have managed to arrange for cold beer to be available within the TatFest site. Feedback from TatFest visitors suggested that a wider variety of food and on-site beverages would be fantastic. Done! Arrangements have been made for a much wider selection of foods as well as thirst quenching ale, for the adults, and Slushies for the kids will be within the TatFest site. TatFest, the festival for all ages celebrating Tatura and District community and businesses, is on again on Sunday, March 1, at Mactier Gardens, Hogan Street, Tatura. Gates open at 10am and close at 4pm. Entry is free. Lots of food, craft and general market stalls, entertainment, and, yes, we will have fairy

floss, popcorn, strawberries and ice cream, as well as meals, soft drinks, beer, cider and of course water will be available. Last year as a result of TatFest, the Lions Club of Tatura supported Tatura Hospital with the purchase of four new beds, contributing $15,200 towards their purchase. TatFest 2020 will be raising funds towards a proposed Community House plan for a transportation/ disaster assistance vehicle. Plans are still under consideration. TatFest 2020 will be bigger and better than ever. We will have new games for the kids, along with the ever popular Zorb balls, the abseiling tower, the train rides and possibly some surprises. The whole of Mactier Gardens and the area to the west across Casey Street will be fenced to make it safe for children. Flanagan Place and Casey Street from Hogan Street to the railway line will be closed from 9:30am to 4:30pm. As a very special event, the Australian Army

Entertainment will be varied from previous years and will include the very well-known and extremely clever Tammy Muir. He has travelled all over Australia entertaining folk with his clever use of verse especially relating to living and working ‘on the land’. One or two other surprises will be in store for those who attend. You will need to attend to see what they are. Once again, we have some wonderful sponsors to make it possible for TatFest to be staged. Tatura Milk continues to be the major sponsor of the event with Shepparton Volkswagen, Shepparton News and Motor Mobile, local vehicle service, repair and towing business, substantial contributors. We could not hold such an event without the fantastic support from local businesses that are generous with their sponsorship for community and fundraising events. In turn they deserve our support where possible. These include: Cardamone Real Estate, Lagozzino’s Top Pub, Unilever, Dawes & Vary Riordan, Commonwealth Bank, Tatura Curry Junction, Facility Management Services, Hobby Boss, Hotwire Mobile Electrics, Leocata’s Transport, Matt Langley Electrical, Rodney Printers, Rubicon, Sharcore Construction, Tatura Pharmacy, Tatura Engineering and Trevaskis Engineering. TATURA BOWLS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Tatura Bowls Club's Ladies and Men's Singles championships and Men's Pairs have concluded with the winners to go on and compete in ‘Champion of Champions’ events against bowls clubs within the Goulburn Valley Bowls Division. Freda Clement in the Ladies Singles final was successful in winning her fifth club championship by defeating Dot Best who was aiming for four in a row. Nick Boyd played sibling Brendon in an exciting final that was a marathon game with over three hours play including 24 ends of the 34 played, incurring only solitary shots. Brendon led by narrow margins for the majority of the match but was overrun when elder brother Nick won five consecutive ends wins totalling nine shots which took him from five down to four up and a 25 to 21 victory. Brendon Boyd (S) and Nick Boyd combined together and competed in the final of the Men's Pairs championship defeating Terry Gale (S) and Michael Stone. - John Crilly, Publicity Officer

DINKUM

So much has happened in Australia since my last column…so much that is really upsetting because of what droughts have and are still doing and the bushfires nationally that will leave scars permanently…and not nice scars. But I want to dwell on home and that means Tatura and our region. I think in the lead up to Christmas the Friday night in Tatura was for a first effort very good…and it will only get better. Full marks to all of those who took part and in particular the Op Shop because not only did it provide free food for those popping in but it had a choir that got outside and sang carols and was then invited by our new Mayor, Seema Abdullah, Greater Shepparton City Council, to go and sing in the nearby park. And I loved the Christmas light shows around our many streets and the carols at large but now we are into a new year and I have a proposal that I will put to a community meeting in a month or two that I think can do for Tatura what the Elvis Festival in Parkes, NSW, has done for that town. I lived nearby to Parkes …Forbes actually and can tell you that Parkes’ population quadruples for a week, the economic rewards to the town are astonishing and it has received not only NSW recognition, but it now known Australia wide. That Festival started small, but it just grows and grows and they even have a train that leaves Sydney just to go to Parkes full of Elvi of all descriptions. So I am not letting the cat out of the bag yet about what I have in mind but just to show I am no pie in the sky dreamer, in the early 70’s I came up with an idea, co-organised it and hosted it, a 24 hour outdoor telethon in Darwin. It had never been done anywhere in Australia before, outdoor that is, but I and others put it together, got guest artists from interstate and became the first telethon anywhere to raise more funds than were actually pledged. I can organise, but I will need a lot of volunteers and a lot of enthusiasm. I hope you are up for the challenge. Finally, a teaser…if Elvis is so well known, who else can you think of equally as well known? So, From Me to You, We Can Work It Out, if we all Come Together. - Dennis Booth

TATURA BASKETBALL FINALS

A Grade Winners A Grade: Bulls 46 def Magic 40 Wednesday night saw the top two A grade sides battle it out for 2019 Spring Season glory. There has been a common theme across this final series in the closeness of the games, particularly in the first half. This game was to be no exception with Bulls being narrowly in the lead 21 to 20 at half time. Both sides had to manage their foul count (neither having a bench) with Magic reaching 8 team fouls in the last minute of the game. Thankfully both sides made it to the final buzzer without losing a player. The Bulls again proved that they were the team to beat all season going out to a 10 point lead midway through the second half. Magic fought back but in the end, the multiple scorers for Bulls saw them take out the premiership by 6 points. Top scorers for Bulls: Ryan Hatch 19 points, Samual Jackson 16 points Top scorers for Magic: Josh Evans 34, Damien Lyons 6 Congratulations the Bulls in finishing off a strong season with a win. Ryan Hatch, with 19 points, at least 3 of them being long rang three pointers, was nominated by the referees as Player of the Final and he received the Lisa Cullum Medal. Our other award winners for the season were: Season MVP 1st – Josh Evans 44 points 2nd – Floyd Vincitorio 42points 2nd – Jackson Barnett 42 points 3rd – Samuel Jackson 29 points 4th – Harry Murdoch 27 points 5th – Jordan O’Neill 25 points Female MVP: Hayley Rennie 7 points Coaches Award: Josh Evans Most Improved: Damien Lyons We also farewelled four of our players who due to age will be ineligible to play in the next season. They are Floyd Vincitorio, Harry Murdoch, Nonie Shipston and Jackson Palmer. These young people have been

playing with TABA for many years and it has been fantastic to see their skills develop and the enjoyment they brought to their game. B1 Grade: Magic 38 def Bulls 35. What a sensational Grand Final between Bulls and Magic. Both teams were determined the win would be theirs and they never gave up. Despite numerous attempts, there were no three pointer bragging rights in this game. Both teams rebounded and defended well and the ball was turned over constantly keeping the referees on their toes. Magic went to the half time break with a five point lead but Bulls came out firing, taking over the lead by one point in the first two minutes. Magic were able to settle their game and reclaim the lead. The crowd was kept entertained with a nail biting second half but despite the Bulls best efforts Magic finished the game with a three point win. Top scorers for Magic: Makai Stanton 17 points, Kade Walker 8 points Top scorers for Bulls: Brady Wileman 12 points, Travis Perry 7 points. The Rijs Family Medal for Most Valuable Player in the Grand Final went to Kade Walker and the overall MVP for the season to Zaya Munday. Coaches Award: Tim Answer Encouragement: Fraser Fidock Most Improved: Xavier Brennan MVP Season: 1st – Zaya Munday 15 points 2nd – Charlotte Gray 14 points 3rd – Kade Walker 13 points 3rd – Marcus Perry 13 points 4th – Cooper Gow 12 points 4th – Trent Benjamin 12 points 5th – Jordan Redman 10 points B2 Grade: Magic 23 def Celtics 22 What a great game to watch, it was almost goal for goal right from the start. A super close grand final with Magic in front at half time by only 1 point – 14 to 13. The biggest margin for the night was 3 points but Magic managed to stay in the lead defeating Celtics by 1 point. Leon Findlay took home the most Valuable Player medal in the grand final and top scorers were Robbie Hamilton on 13 points for Magic and Daniel Simpson Thouliss on 11 points for Celtics. MVP Season 1st – Robbie Hamilton and Shannon Wills 20 Votes 2nd – Archer Backway and Daniel Simpson Thouliss 13 Votes 3rd – Tanz Dellar 9 Votes 4th – Kacee Swetnam 8 Votes 5th – Ebony Keating 6 Votes MVP Female: Ebony Keating Coaches Award: Shannon Wills Encouragement: Olivia Attoni Most Improved: Tyler Doolan - Lisa Cullum

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, January 2020 - Page 23

WORLD EVENTS

in November

February 1 – Serpent Day. Serpent day is a day of reflection and coming to grips with our fears. Serpents have often been associated with wisdom and cunning and we all need to stop and take stock at different times in our life and contemplate what our life lessons have taught us so far. February 2 – Groundhog Day. Didn’t we celebrate this last year and again the year before that? I have a strong sense of déjà vu about this. February 3 – World Wetlands Day. Wetlands provide a safe habitat for a wide variety of birds, many of them endangered. Our very own wetlands, Cussen Park, adds a further layer of interest and complexity to the Tatura environment, so get out there and enjoy these interesting surrounds. Don’t forget the mosquito repellent. February 5 – World Animal Reiki Day – Reiki means healing with spiritual energy through meditation. You need to form a healing spiritual bridge with your pet to help it re-balance and re-energise. Your pet will thank you by asking for more food. February 8 – World Propose Day. This is the second day in the Valentine Week and has more to do with marriage rather than simply proposing that you pop down to the pub for a nice cold beer. February 9 – Read in The Bathtub Day. This is an opportunity to spend some relaxing time in the bath with a few scented candles, some aromatic bubble bath, your rubber ducky and your favourite book. My advice is just to spend half an hour in the evening rather than the whole day as you could emerge looking quite wrinkled. February 10 – Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day. It is what it is, so don’t stress about it, simply clean up the mess and move on. You can’t change the past so the best way to celebrate this day is to forgive yourself for past mistakes and get on with your life. Your future has yet to be written. February 11 – Get A Different Name Day. We identify with our names because we’ve always had them but do they really suit us? Taking on a new name can help affirm a new identity or the future path we plan to tread now that we’ve reached a fork in the road. You don’t have to change it legally, just make it known that this is now the new you. All you have to say are the new, magic words, “I now identify as …” You could always choose one of the names that celebrities bestow upon their children. Here are a few examples: Fifi Trixibelle, Apple, Coco, Kyd, Abcde, Sage Moonblood, Diva Thin Muffin, Moxie Crimefighter, Tu Morrow and Jermajesty. Hmm, all of a sudden your name doesn’t sound so bad after all. Don’t any of these people ever think about the poor children.

February 12 – Darwin Day. Although this day celebrates the achievements of Charles Darwin and his world changing theory of evolution and the survival of the fittest, I prefer to focus on the Darwin Awards which is all about the extinction of the stupid. February 13 - World Radio Day. It should come as no surprise, unless you’re up for a Darwin Award, that World Radio Day is about celebrating Radio. It’s a day to remember the unique power of radio to touch lives and bring people together across every corner of the globe. Is there anything better than listening to the cricket or football on the car radio whilst you’re on a long journey? February 14 – Valentine’s Day. To all the men folk reading this, give her something on this day, anything at all. Flowers are always a winner and dinner at a nice restaurant goes over just as well. I’m warning you, do nothing at your peril. They may say you don’t need to do anything for them but that’s just an insidious test which will herald the next ice age if you fail to pass. Actually, if we all do nothing then this could end global warming! February 16 – Çhinese New Year. The Chinese zodiac cycles through every twelve years and 2020 is the year of the Rat. In Chinese culture, the rat is seen as wealth and surplus. Chinese couples prayed to the Rat if they wanted children, which gives a different meaning to the term love rat. Optimistic and energetic, Rat people are likable by all. They are sensitive to other’s emotions but are stubborn with their opinion. Their personality is kind, but due to weak communication skills, their words may seem impolite and rude. They like saving and can be stingy. However, their love for hoarding will sometimes cause them to waste money on unnecessary things. Does this sound like you? Previous Rat years were 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 and 2008. February 17 – International Random Acts of Kindness Day. The fact that we need to contemplate such a day speaks volumes for our current society. Many members of our society have become so insular that their whole focus is based upon a small 10cm screen held immediately in front of their face and they’re completely unware of what is happening around them. Many of them have already qualified for Darwin awards after wandering in front of cars or stepping off cliffs. For those readers who still have a life, research has shown that the giver of the good deed receives just as many benefits as the receiver. An actual win-win situation. Remember, what comes around, goes around, karma and all of that. February 18 – Clean Out Your Bookcase Day. Just do it. Why read the same book twice? It just means that’s one less book you will read over the course of your life. Donate them to the Op Shop and let somebody else get the pleasure from reading them.

February 21 – World Mother Tongue Day. Rest easy. This is not a day reserved for a welldeserved tongue lashing from your mother for all those stupid things you have done during the past twelve months, and there have been quite a few haven’t there? This is yet another awareness raising day that promotes linguistic and cultural diversity. There are now so many awareness raising days that I think we should have an international blasé day just so we can recover our equilibrium. February 22 – World Humble Day. According to C.S. Lewis, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” However, I prefer the quote from philosopher Criss Jami, “The biggest challenge after success is shutting up about it.” Please note that you cannot claim to be a humble person as that will be seen as an act of pride. February 23 – International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day – This has nothing to do with pensioners struggling on their meagre government pension. This is all about rewarding your faithful dog for their unremitting, non-judgemental loyalty and devotion. They are the ones who will truly appreciate a tasty dog biscuit. February 27 – No Brainer Day. This is basically a chill-out day where you do all the little things that are simple, obvious and logical. If a job requires thinking, study or analysis then put it off until tomorrow. Give your brain a rest. Please note that this is entirely different to International Procrastination Day although only a true master of the art of laziness can tell the difference. - John Kriesfeld

TATURA GIRL GUIDES

Supporting Our Community, thank you to Hungry Jacks, Shepparton. Phyll Bramley was able to present Achiever Awards to Tatura Girl Guides for supporting All Saints at their recent Fete held on November 16. Guides took on several important roles, serving on the White Elephant Stall as well as serving refreshments to stall holders which was most appreciated. On December 12, Ingrid Spedding and Japneet Kaur made their Girl Guide Promise to leaders Lisa Wagner and Naomi Kerr. Together Ingrid and Japneet choose colours as their theme, as Guides all over the world wear many different coloured uniforms. The hall was decked out in many friendship colours. Leaders Lisa and Naomi welcomed Ingrid

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle

Why, why, why do I always get caught up in Agnes’s enthusiasm? Oh, she was so excited to be going off camping. “Come along,” she said. “We will have a lovely time. Fred has everything we need, so just bring your clothes and maybe something to read.” The thought of spending time with another couple was far from enticing, but I have been told it is healthy to go outside of your comfort zone, in fact I have been told that many times for some reason. So, I ended up at some remote location to spend five days in a caravan with an annex, just the three of us. Agnes was so truly excited, she kept saying, “It’s like a little getaway, it will be so relaxing and we will be near the ocean, so lots of swimming too.” Naturally, I long to bob about in the ocean, for goodness sakes, with sharks, jelly fish, eels, crabs and goodness knows what else. Not to mention stingrays, the ones that killed that lovely crocodile man. “No thank you, I will not be doing any paddling, frolicking or bobbing in the ocean,” I sternly explained to Enthusiastic Agnes. The drive was extremely long and I was rather hot in the back seat, but of course I don’t like to complain, so I just waited until we arrived and let the ocean breeze cool me down. I was relegated to sleeping in the annex so Fred and Agnes could have the nice air-conditioned caravan. Unfortunately, the cool ocean breeze turns bitterly cold during the night, but again, as a guest, I did not complain. Dinner the first night consisted of biscuits and vegemite, as it turned out Fred had left the fully stocked esky on the back veranda at home. Personally, I could have strangled him, but happy, happy Agnes said not to worry love, we will pop up to the shops tomorrow and stock up. After my very unsatisfying meal, I traipsed off to the toilet block, another marvellous experience during this wonderful day. It was quite cold with the wind whistling under the doors which have clearly been designed to allow for ultimate wind flow, and possibly a midget to crawl under. I am certainly not looking forward to having a shower tomorrow in these conditions. Oh, why did I agree to this? Me and my kind, giving nature, it can quite often get me into trouble. After chatting a bit, we all went off to bed. After taking forever to doze off, I was woken by the thumping and rocking of the caravan as Fred clumsily made his way out to go to the toilet block. He sounded like he weighed two hundred and fifty kilos by the thumping on the floor. For heaven’s sake, have a little courtesy for others I thought to myself. The banging and crashing was just as bad on his return. However, once I was awake, I became aware of buzzing mosquitoes in my annex. I turned the light on but couldn’t see any of the sneaky damn things. Once I turned the light off again, there they were making a beeline for my face and arms, making the most horrendous noise. I struggled out of bed once again, and sprayed the room. I pulled the covers up over my face to avoid being eaten alive, and it took me ages to get back to sleep. In the morning I noticed that Fred had left the fly screen flap open, so no wonder there were mosquitoes. I often have evil thoughts about what I would like to do to Fred, but I try to dismiss them as being uncharitable. Next morning, I declared, “I’m covered in bites Agnes.” Agnes simply smiled. “Oh I don’t have any Merle. We have a plug-in bug repeller inside the van.”

15 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Servicing the Goulburn Valley

“Well aren’t you just so fortunate Agnes,” I replied, not even trying to hide my sarcasm. “Do you have bite cream then?” “Oh, sorry Merle, it seems Fred forgot to bring the first aid kit,” said Agnes. I scowled at Agnes. “Did Fred actually remember to bring anything at all? He has my life in his hands and I will be lucky to make it back alive at this rate.” “He had a lot to organise Merle,” said Agnes. “He had to fill the car, pack everything up, turn off all the power points at home, leave food out for the cats, and so much other stuff. I guess he just forgot a few things.” Packing the car would not have taken long I thought to myself, but decided just to get on with the day. “I don’t know about you, but I’m awfully hungry this morning Agnes.” Agnes nodded. “I think there is bread, let me check.” She went searching high and low, only to declare no such bread existed. Seems good old Fred forgot that too. My patience was thinning. “We’ll just get something on our way to the beach,” declared Agnes. “We thought with the weather being so lovely today we could go and get a swim in.” Agnes is always so damn cheery. It must be her medication. I tagged along as only a true friend would. I covered myself in sunscreen, which luckily was in my own handbag, but with the wind blowing a gale, and the sand whipping up at me and sticking to my sunscreen, I became very hot and bothered. I had to hang on to my hat the whole time so it didn’t blow off. I had sand in my eyes and my only spare hand was left to fend off the flies which were attempting to carry me off. Stupid Fred splashed about like a small child and Agnes whooped it up like a teenager. Honestly what is with these two? I suffered for as long as I could until I requested that we head for home. We passed the shops and got some supplies to tide us over for the next few days. Evening meal number two was eventually cooked and eaten and then we headed off to the toilet block for a shower. The experience was all that I expected. Freezing cold air blowing at me from all directions, wet floors from previous occupants, as well as dim lighting that still managed to attract more bugs than I see in a year at my house. On the way back, the torch battery stopped working and guess what, Fred did not bring any spares. My cup of tea was less than satisfactory with long-life milk and there were no biscuits. Let me die now was my only thought. I’ve had a good life. How I longed for home. After five days of bugs, boredom, cockroaches scurrying over our plates in the cupboards, drastic weather changes including day cooped up inside as the rain bucketed down making even a toilet block visit near impossible, more mozzies, more bites and putting up with Fred, I was more than ready for the journey home. Our only saving grace was that it was not peak time and the caravan park was sparsely attended. “Oh look,” exclaimed Fred as he started to pack the boot. “It’s the bread. A bit mouldy now, but it was in the boot the whole time.” To my amazement, he then proceeded to laugh. I bravely ventured outside my comfort zone but I will never, ever venture outside of it again. I like my comfort and I like my zone. Why would anyone want to go outside of that? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

GERMAN WAR GRAVES MEMORIAL SERVICE

Ambassador Dr Thomas Fitschen with Mr Lawrence Lamar

Laying a Wreath A memorial service was held at the Tatura German War Graves Cemetery on November 17 last year by the Ambassador of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, to honour those Germans who died during WW1 and WW2. After WW2, the Australian War Graves Commission moved most German Nationals who were buried anywhere in Australia to the Tatura Cemetery. 130 Italian war internments

were also moved to the Italian Ossario at the Murchison Cemetery. The Memorial Service was conducted with much dignity and was presided over by Jorg Hilderbrand of the German Lutheran Trinity church Melbourne. This was followed by speeches of welcome by the Mayor of Greater Shepparton City Council, Cr. Seema Abdullah, and the President of Tatura RSL, Mr Rod Schubert. Further speeches were delivered

by the Ambassador Dr. Thomas Fitschen, Bernhard Hoefer Temple Society Australia and Pastor Christoph Dielmann of the German Lutheran Trinity Church Melbourne. The speeches were interspersed with suitable recorded choral music. Lunch was provided at the Tatura Hotel, and afterwards most visitors were guests at the Tatura Museum where they admired the recently opened Exhibition Gallery and displays, prior to their return home to Melbourne.

February GARDENING PLAN February is the time that summer begins to wind down. Although it can still get very hot, it is often the month that sees the most growth in the garden so, water, water, water and then water some more. If you have not mulched your garden beds or around the tops of your pots of planted flowers, then I suggest you give it a go. It saves so much water and time and adds beneficial nutrients to the soil. I personally use organic mulch such as Straw or Sugarcane mulch. I put a good 10cm thick layer and top up once every two years. Most importantly I always feed my plants in the garden bed before I lay the mulch down. Its particularly important to feed plants if you’re choosing to use a bark or woodchip mulch. Woodchip mulch is very porous and draws nutrients from the soil, especially nitrogen which runs the risk of starving your plants. Rodney CWA Christmas Party

RODNEY BRANCH CWA Rodney Branch wish all Bulletin readers a very Happy and Healthy 2020. Our hearts go out to all those affected by the devastating bushes fires and CWA will no doubt rise to the occasion with financial and emotional support. Our branch finished the year with our Christmas break up at the Tatura Chinese restaurant with a good night had by all. President Carol gave each member a gift of homemade yoyos. Members are thrilled to have Denise Ferguson, a long time Rodney CWA member, back amongst us again. In December we donated to Marion Centre eight chocolate Christmas stockings each with a hand knitted Teddy Bear to Family Care, clothing and stationery items to St Vincent De Paul and toiletries for their Christmas Hampers. Janice and Lyn Trezise worked at the State Christmas Fair at CWA Headquarters in Toorak, packing, wrapping and sorting out the hundreds of Christmas cakes, puddings, shortbread and mince pies for sale. Christmas goodies made by Gwen and Mandy, Lyn and Janice were very much appreciated along with Helen’s craft items. Five members donated shoe boxes filled with pamper items including a book, CD, perfume, toiletries to be given to the ladies in the drought ravaged areas of Western NSW. They were wrapped in a local newspaper so the recipients knew which area they came from. Our year starts off on January 14 at Gwen’s house with a Working Bee making large covers for cushions for Tatura Cubby and Gowrie Street Kindergarten. Our Junior branch, on February 6, will learn to knit a headband and our senior branch on February 13, will learn about Scrapbooking. All welcome. Our Group Conference will be held at Harston Hall on Thursday, February 13. Welfare Goods required are: socks, underwear, toiletries and knitted teddies, scarves, beanies and members are asked to bring along non-perishable goods to be donated to a local charity. Keep Thursday, March 26 free as we will be holding a sumptuous morning tea, with lucky prizes and a guest speaker at the home of our President, Carol in Dhurringile. The cost is $10 and bookings are essential. Book with Janette Mason on 0408 194 638, by March 18. Money with booking and first in gets a seat. This is open to all ladies and not just CWA ladies. We look forward to seeing you there. - Janice Barrette, Publicity Officer

If possible, water your plants in the morning; plants, like us, need a good breakfast. The sun activates the water, generating the food that the plant will draw on throughout the day. Although their flowering period may seem a long way off, Camellias and Azaleas are gearing up for the big show. Give them a feed now with an Azalea and Camellia fertilizer. Make sure they are mulched well with an organic mulch, or alternately, grass clippings mixed with manure works also well. Citrus could also do with another feed at this time. If you have cold climate bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodils or Hyacinths, now is a good time to pop them into the refrigerator. It is beneficial to give them 6-8 weeks of being chilled prior to planting them in the garden. Re-pot your Cyclamens into fresh potting mix or if already in a pot, give it a go by planting into the garden. Pick a semi protected position of morning sun and shade in the afternoon. Water them with a soluble fertilizer. Prune your summer fruiting trees once they have finished fruiting and all fruit has been harvested. Clean up any dead flower heads, for example Agapanthus and Salvias can be dead headed right now, and also roses can do with a tidy up and some rose food applied. Get ready to start preparing your vegie patches for the winter crops by preparing your soil with manure and mulch. To sweeten the soil, you can add some dolomite. Flowers to plant: Cornflower, Cyclamen, Delphinium, Dianthus, Everlasting Daisy, Nemisia, Statice, Stock, Linaria, Livingston Daisy, Foxglove, Lobellia, Verbeena, Impatients, Petunia, Vinca, Salvia, Strawflower, Sunflower, Pansy, Poppy, Wallflower, Zinnia and Nasturtium. Vegies to plant: Beans, Beetroots, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbages, Carrots, Celery, Cauliflowers, Herbs, Onions, Peas, Parsnips, Radishes, Lettuce, Silver beet, Spinach, Rhubarb, Shallots, Turnips, Cress, Endive, Leeks and Chicory. Happy Gardening!

BIRDWISE by Yvonne Deering G'day galahs you crazy birds. Tree high, a scream, you greet the dawn, breast the sunrise flaming flamingo fandango pink. You swoop to flock, to fly, sweeping the summer sky this way, the other, grey, pink, grey, silvered with screeches. Gathered, a crowd, heads down, you forage in paddocks with single-minded focus while one keeps watch sharp-eyed.

In afternoon heat, in pairs, you perch, preen one another's plumage feed your young, heeding their insane natterings. In rain you act the clown, show off, hang upside down from power lines, clapping, flapping your wings like mad, squealing in giddy ecstasy. Hilarious, gregarious galah, you are no fool. Fun-loving, you are garrulous, gorgeous, teaching, unwitting, a thing or two. Tickling me pink.

TATURA LION’S BUSHFIRE ASSISTANCE The ‘Aussie Spirit’ to help out when disaster strikes our community has come to the fore since the dreadful beginning of this year’s fire season back in September. As always Lions Clubs around the country have responded to the needs of our fellow Australians in assisting where there is such a need. Tatura Lions Club has participated appropriately by way of financial assistance to the Lions Club International Foundation in their project to raise $150,000 for the purchase of water tanks to replace ones destroyed during the NSW fires. This is an example of Lions Clubs around the world helping with a need in Australia. Tatura Lions Club also donated funds via the Australian Lions Foundation so that funds can be dispersed to Lions Clubs active in the specific areas where bushfires have caused so much devastation; giving assistance to our fellow Australians who have lost so much. All funds donated to the Australian Lions Foundation bushfire appeal go to people in need. To date the Lions national appeal has raised a total of over $600,000. The funds are being dispersed through grants to specific district Clubs. The clubs will use the money to support people in need in their local area. Thankfully Tatura has been spared thus far from the devastation fellow Australians have had to endure. If we are faced with similar circumstances, I feel confident that we would equally appreciate any such assistance. If any Tatura business or individual wishes to contribute to this worthwhile cause please contact the Tatura Lions Club President, PDG Glenda McLeod on 0411298113 or Club Treasurer, John Mapson on 0408505153. As our club motto suggests: “Where there is a Need, there is a Lion.” - Angelo Torresan, President

BYRNESIDE CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS The evening of Friday, December 6, saw over ninety people gather at the Byrneside Hall for their annual Byrneside Christmas dinner. Santa’s arrival was the highlight of the night, with over twenty very excited children receiving a present from Santa. Congratulations to the Committee of Management for the Hall for hosting the evening. Thank-you to everyone that helped on the night or donated gifts for the raffle. Special thanks to the team that decorated the Hall, they did an amazing job and the Hall looked fantastic. Joan Baumber Receiving Her Certificate of Appreciation

GOULBURN VALLEY TREE GROUP As we head into a new nursery season the time seems right for the pen to be passed on to a new scribe. After 35 years volunteering at the GVTG, being a foundation member and writing countless articles, Joan Baumber is taking a step back. On behalf of the GVTG and your readers, I'd like to thank Joan for her contribution and I'm sure she will remain a great source of tree growing wisdom for us all. Down at the nursery, seeding has finished and a dedicated group have pricked out about 5000 seedlings so far, slightly ahead of this time last year. One species I'm becoming acquainted with is Austrostipa elegantissima, Elegant Spear Grass. It has very thin delicate leaves making it difficult to propagate but it will be worth the trouble. Mass plantings of these perennial tufts will look spectacular in spring when they flower. Happy New Year from all at the GVTG and good growing. - Ash Sanders

ASHLEY MCDONNELL NOVICE SINGLES CHAMPION The Tatura Bowls Club has amongst their membership a couple of very capable bowlers in husband and wife team John and Faye Attwood and in recent years, their grandson Ashley McDonell has been coming down to the club for a roll of bowls. Under their tutelage, and obviously blessed with some natural talent, Ash started playing bowls in 2019 and made his way into Tatura's top side, leading for his grandfather John at weekend pennant. Ash, as a first-year bowler, entered the Central, Goulburn and Murray Association's Novice Singles Championship and in a field of 19 bowlers, competed for the title at the Numurkah Golf Bowls Club. The competition was fierce and there were some close games played, but by the end of the day Ashley had won the Novice Singles Championship and will now go on to compete against other regional winners in March for the State Title. - John Crilly

8-9. Smarty Pants. How does it feel to be in the top 5% of the population? Although there is no evidence to back up this claim, I’m sure you’ll agree that it feels right. 10. Genius. Every question correct! Lucky for you it was multiple choice. However, you now have a month to bask in the glory by asking other people how they did on the quiz.

3-5. Bland Street. Well done! You are Mr or Mrs Average, the person that everybody else measures themselves against. Most people fall into this category which also includes mediocre, bland, ordinary, run-of–the mill, middling and commonplace. You are the rock in the ocean of knowledge. No, I don’t know what it means either but it sounds good.

These are so very simple to make and yet appear a little ‘special’. When I don't have dill, they seem to do well with any sort of soft leafed herbs - coriander and parsley worked well. Ingredients: 500g Potatoes 150g Smoked Salmon Portions 1/4 Cup Dill 2 Spring Onions 1 Teaspoon Grated Lemon Rind 3 Eggs 1/2 Cup Self Raising Flour Method: Boil Potatoes and lightly mash, leaving it somewhat lumpy. Add all other ingredients and mix well. Deep fry spoonfuls for approximately four minutes. Drain on kitchen paper. Janice Dreyer

TAT 200

Watches & Diamonds 150 Hogan Street, Tatura, Victoria 3616 (03) 5824 1100

On Saturday, November 16, we successfully delivered the twelfth annual Tatura 200 Charity Bike Ride and Walk with 320 riders and walkers participating. We are proud that this year’s event raised $90,000 for local charities and community groups in the Goulburn Valley. A special milestone was achieved in 2019, as over the past twelve years the event has raised just over $1 million dollars. The major project for this year is the creation of the Tatura Milk Rural Scholarship Program. This program will assist immediate family members of Tatura Milk dairy farmer suppliers to pursue tertiary education opportunities away from their home. Ideally the successful candidates will have chosen a degree that will equip them with important skills and knowledge to enhance their rural communities on their return.

Other organisations and groups to receive funding included: • Give Me 5 For Kids; support for the Goulburn Valley Health Kids Ward • GV Trails Group; Creation of a multi-use walking and riding trail along the Goulburn River to connect Shepparton, Mooroopna, Tatura, Toolamba, Old Toolamba and Murchison • Teen Challenge; purchase of exercise bikes for youth rehabilitation clinic • Tatura CFA; support for the local fire brigade • Christmas for the Alone in Tatura and Shepparton • Various service organisations across Tatura and Shepparton
