Serving Our Community has three children and one three month old grandson. She used to do childcare at her home and became a Lifeguard after doing a course and getting her level 3 first aid, which gets updated each year.

She speaks of her eldest son, Mat (Mathew) who is aged 33, as her role model. Apparently he also started in the same industry, has put himself through University, studying HR Work Place Law. Her next child, Bridie, is 21 years old and she works full time in an Insurance Company. The youngest, Dylan, 19 years, is still at TAFE, studying to become a PT Trainer.

DEBBIE STANTON With our summer season having started early this year, the Tatura Swimming Pool has been a very pleasant place to spend some time.

Debbie Stanton has been a Lifeguard there for the last thirteen years, telling me that it has "come a long way" since she started, with it now being a very family orientated venue.

Debbie was born in Bordertown SA and moved to Tatura when she was 15 years old.

She went to Mooroopna High and moved to Shepparton five years ago. She had been in quite an athletic family and played netball at Tatura until about three years ago. She

For relaxation Debbie likes to swim and camp, enjoying weekend camping trips with a group of about twenty friends. She works five days a week at the pool and loves the diversity of people she meets and the terrific staff she works with. She says the most rewarding part of her job has been the pool being taken back to a family environment after it had been known as a rather rough area. The most difficult time she has experienced was working on Black Saturday in the extremely high temperatures. One can imagine that would not have been particularly pleasant.

Debbie also spoke of a couple of funny situations, including one where a man lost his false teeth while competing in the 100 lap challenge. She obviously has a good rapport with the regular kids attending as some of them would throw her in the pool after telling her that she looked too hot. In fact, having spoken to Debbie myself, I can well understand her finding the PR part of the job being a very easy one for her.

The Tatura Swimming Complex is on the

corner of Service and Hastie Streets and is open between 12 noon and 7 p.m. and on public holidays from 12 noon until 5 p.m.

These hours are sometimes extended if certain temperatures are exceeded. At just $12.30 per family or $4.50 per adult, it is certainly a very cheap day out by today's standards, and one can never make little of the social benefits to the children who spend time there. Many people are taking advantage of the venue to hold their birthday parties, as with a free double BBQ and six picnic tables there, they only need to take their own meat and drinks.

There are swimming lessons held from Monday to Wednesdays by Allison Hurst and Activities in the Park have had many events each week during all of December and January. They have had Water Aerobics, Giant Inflatable, a Pool Party, Sports Week and Water Safety Week and are having Sandcastle Building this week from 25th Jan until 31st Jan between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

There are always two Lifeguards on duty any one day, with more called in if numbers get too high. There is the Main Pool at 33 metres long, depth varying from .9m to 3.3 metres and then a Kiddie Pool for the little tots. The kiosk sells lollies, drinks and ice-creams and naturally has separate change rooms for male and females.

The pools are always clean for users, being vacuumed weekly, using of chemicals and scooping to get rid of leaves daily.

When asked what advice Debbie would give to anyone taking on her role she said, "One has to like what they do and should use the uniform to stand behind. Be Strong and talk to people. It really is a fantastic job."

IT’S TIME TO CHECK POOL AND SPA FENCES Greater Shepparton City Council is asking for all residents to check their swimming pool and spa fencing and gates in preparation for the warmer weather and holiday period. The installation of child proof barriers around swimming pools and spas are compulsory under State Government legislation and for any new pools or spas you must get a building permit before constructing the fence around the pool or spa. Drowning is the single largest cause of death of children up to four years old.

The Council is keen to ensure that action is taken to prevent any tragedies and will offer assistance and information to residents to facilitate the installation of appropriate child safety barriers. It is the pool and spa owners’ and occupiers responsibility to ensure that all safety barriers are properly installed and adequately maintained.

Johann Rajaratnam said, “Now that it is getting warmer, we all want to be outside using our pools and spas and enjoying the lovely weather. As such, we need to ensure all fences and gates are operational and up to code. So we are asking for owners of pools and spas to be diligent and check that their fences and gates are all in good working order before the holiday period.”

Here are some tips when checking safety barriers remember: pool fences, fences, gates, doors and windows that form the barrier must be fitted and operating correctly. Ensure the barrier area is maintained and landscaped so that children can't climb objects including tree branches, pot plants, boxes, play equipment or clothes lines to gain access to the swimming pool/spa. Consider inspecting adjoining properties to ensure there are no potential hazards or objects that may allow young children access to the swimming pool or spa. Never prop open any gate providing access to the swimming pool or spa.

“If fences do not comply with Building Regulations 2006, this could result in the owners receiving large fines,” Mr Rajaratnam said.

DHURRINGILE HEADS TO AUSSIE OPEN Dhurringile Tennis Club has been given a golden opportunity to bring fifty junior and senior members to the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Day at this year’s 2016 Australian Open. Club Spokesperson Lisa Niglia was ecstatic with the announcement and appreciative that Tennis Australia and the ANZ Bank has recognized the hard work club volunteers have put into junior development and the ANZ juniors Hot Shots Red, Orange and Green ball. The ANZ Community Play Hot Shots program has been part of the club since 2012 and has encouraged juniors and their families from the wider community such as Murchison, Tatura and Toolamba, to participate in this great program. Offering Community Play tennis locally to juniors at a fundamental level is a stepping stone before playing Saturday competitive Tennis. DTC would like to take this opportunity to thank Tennis Australia and especially Major Sponsors ANZ Bank who will be proudly presenting the juniors on Thursday, January 21 as ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Day. DTC has also scored one of the world’s top tennis players at this year’s Australian Open. In 2015 DTC hosted a Free Tennis Day, opening its club to the local community and encouraging people of all ages and abilities to pick up a racquet and have a hit. By hosting a Free Tennis Day, the club earned points and has been rewarded with one of the qualifying players in the Australian Open. DTC will be cheering for Rolla Ovatopava. The club also

As part of the ANZ Hot Shots tennis program, ten juniors will be attending the Australian Open 2016 Kids on Court, Showcase experience on Sunday 24.

Juniors will be accompanied by one parent where they will showcase their tennis skills on one of the major show courts. The Club’s Community Play Volunteers are delighted with the outcome and stated what a wonderful opportunity and experience for all the Hot Shots junior kids. With the continued hard work by committee members, the club was pleased to announce their success with VicHealth's Active Club Grants 2015-16 Round One. Approximately, $3000 worth of tennis equipment will be purchased to help with the

club’s junior development.

Well done to John Evans and Lisa Niglia for volunteering and donating their time at Murchison Primary School for delivering an amazing ten weeks of ANZ Tennis Hot Shots.

All funds will go back into junior tennis development for the area and $200 will be donated back to Murchison Tennis Club for their contribution.

Senior teams are doing well in the Goulburn Murray tennis competition. Both teams are in the top 4 thus far. DTC will be hosting a FAST 4 tennis competition supported by Tennis Australia. VALENTINE’S DAY

Who was Saint Valentine? According to legend, Valentine was a third century priest in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Claudius decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and children and banned his troops from marrying.

Valentine viewed this decree as unjust and defied Claudius by continuing to perform marriages for the emperor’s soldiers. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius sentenced him to death. While Valentine was rotting in prison waiting for his sentence to be carried out, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter after he saw her accompanying her father on his rounds. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed, “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today.

Some scholars believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death while others claim that the Christian church placed St. Valentine’s feast day there in order to Christianise the pagan celebration of Lupercalia which was celebrated at the ides of February, or February 13 to 15. Lupercalia was a very ancient pastoral festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture and was held to avert evil spirits, purify the city and release health and fertility. The Lupercalia festival was also partly in honour of Lupa the she-wolf who suckled the infant orphans, Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, explaining the name of the festival, Lupercalia, or ‘Wolf Festival.’

To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus were believed to have been cared for by the she-wolf, Lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat for fertility then strip the goat’s hide into strips, dipping them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it

was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity but was outlawed as un-Christian at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance.

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting is now part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London.

By the middle of the 18th century, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Readymade cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged.

Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings.

Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent globally each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card sending activity of the year.

An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas. Research shows that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentine cards. However, with electronic cards now available through the internet and rising postal costs, the concept of cards on Valentine’s Day is undergoing a quiet revolution.

The Greater Shepparton City Council Animal Shelter currently has over twenty cats and kittens and eight dogs looking for a home.

This summer the GSCC Animal Shelter has cared for lots of animals including dogs, cats, kittens and rabbits. To assist in raising awareness about pet adoption and encourage people to consider adopting a pet from the Animal Shelter, PETstock currently care for some of the Shelter’s kittens and rabbits at their store in Benalla Road, Shepparton.

Residents have the opportunity to visit either the Animal Shelter or PETstock to learn about the process and benefits of adopting a shelter animal, as well as meeting animals looking for a new forever home.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Citizens Services, Laurienne Winbanks said it was important to ensure that the animal’s new home will be forever. “Animal Shelter and PETstock staff focus on matching the right animal with the right home. Experienced staff are available to offer assistance and guidance to anyone interested in adopting a shelter pet.

Adopting an animal from the Shepparton Animal Shelter is a rewarding experience that will last a lifetime.”

The price to adopt an animal is $100 for cats and kittens and $150-$305 for dogs. All animals that adopted from the Shepparton Animal Shelter are vet checked, vaccinated, micro chipped and de-sexed.

THE PARENTSNEXT PROGRAM

The Australian Government is seeking proposals for projects that may be funded t h r o u g h t h e P a re n t s N e x t p r o g r a m .

Organisations who are committed to improving the employment opportunities for local unemployed parents should submit a proposal.

“Commencing on April 4 in Greater Shepparton and the Hume region in the Murray electorate, ParentsNext aims to help parents with young children plan for future employment by arranging activities and connecting parents to local services to prepare them for work by the time their children are at school,” Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said.

“ParentsNext will help parents with planning and preparation for employment and will connect parents to local organisations that can help them update their qualifications and skills, and gain recognition of prior skills.

This could include TAFEs, secondary schools, training providers and employment services.

The Department of Employment will hold information sessions for applicants.”

We’ll Locate the New Block Here The Tatura Community Plan committee is looking forward to another productive year. A key outcome of the Community Plan Review conducted last year was the need to address walking, cycling, and public transport issues for Tatura residents. Current issues include mobility and transport within Tatura, transport to Mooroopna and Shepparton, and transport to Melbourne. The Committee is planning to have a stand at the Tatura Market and Sustainable Living Festival at Stuart Mock Place on February 27, so please come along and discuss any ideas you have with us. A forum is planned for residents to discuss ideas further in March.

The Committee has been providing input into the design of a new amenities block that is planned for Mactier Park to replace the old toilet block near the skate park. The new block

will be located more centrally in the Park, and is expected to be completed in March.

The Committee are also very keen to hear from anyone interested in joining Council’s ‘Ramp it up’ group, to further youth services and activities in Tatura. Tatura does not currently have a representative on this group, which is limiting funding opportunities and activities for our youth.

There are many other actions identified in the review, and we welcome the involvement of all the community in making them happen. Off I go with Agnes for our weekly shopping afternoon as we have been doing for many years now, and almost always at the same supermarket. It’s the one close to home and where we know the location of our regular items, although they still like to randomly move things around, having absolutely no consideration for people like us who like to stick to a routine which is typical of the way people are these days.

Of course yet again I have chosen a wonky trolley while Agnes is blissfully pushing her trolley around which, naturally, is in perfect working order. I still believe she has some intuitive way of knowing which ones are the bad trolleys just by looking at them, a secret she is keeping closely to herself so as to always get the well behaved trolley.

We no sooner start off down the first aisle when my ears are brutally attacked by a terrible high pitched screech. “Oh here we go again,” I say to Agnes. Every time without fail, there is one screeching, small child who manages to keep up this obnoxious noise for the entire duration of our shop. “What sort of parent allows this to happen?” I mutter while shaking my head.

We march around trying unsuccessfully to block out this child who by now is at such a volume one would be mistaken for thinking it has gained access to the supermarket PA system as the noise reverberates off every shelf and stocked item. Why on earth can’t people control these children?

We chat about the weather and sundry other things when Agnes says to me “My son-in-law was supposed to come over this weekend to

fix the back gate, but now he has somethink else to do.”

Well….my permanent frown lines were getting a full workout as I stared at Agnes in disbelief!

“What did you just say Agnes?”

“Oh,” she continued, “he can’t come over now.”

“No, no, no,” I said. “Tell me again why he can’t fix the back gate.”

“Oh Merle, your hearing, honestly,” replied Agnes. “He can’t come over because he has somethink else to do.”

“Agnes!” I almost out-screeched the screeching child. “Why are you saying somethink?”

“What on earth do you mean?” she said with a quizzical look.

“Heavens to Betsy, you’re putting a ‘k’ at the end of ‘something’. Why on earth would you do that? The word ‘something’ does not have and never will have, a ‘k’ on the end of it. I have never heard such an uncultured thing in all my days. I can’t believe you could ever do that Agnes!”

“Oh,” Agnes said, way too casually, “I didn’t realise I did.”

“Well you did,” I replied. “You’re an educated women Agnes, and I simply do not understand why you would randomly add a ‘k’ on the end of a word that has existed forever.” I shook my head, and huffed and puffed about what a simply dreadful day this was. “And furthermore, I will tell you something for nothing, if that was my child, not that my children ever behaved like that, I would have dealt with the situation and had it sorted

I could not wait to get home, put my feet up and watch my regular afternoon shows. I was really wondering if I could continue to put up with Agnes if she was going to behave in such a wildly odd manner. Perhaps she was going senile.

I was lost in this thought when we had the misfortune of occupying the same aisle as the torturous, screeching child. My wicked side took over and I lined this kid up with my wonky trolley and was imagining running the little blighter over with some force, sending it flying through the air and really giving it something to cry about when, just as I was about to launch my attack, Agnes put her hand on mine, jerked me to one side and said, “Oh look Merle, our favourite biscuits are on special. How many packets do you want?”

Well my plan was foiled, probably a good thing, and I must admit I was a bit excited that my favourite biscuits were on sale as I do really love scotch finger.

As for the screeching child, well it had a lucky escape this time. However, I want to know, why can’t parents control their children? Surely they can’t be oblivious to their screeching. Can someone please explain this to me?

MURCHISON AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY MILESTONE

December 18, 2015 marked 30 years since the first meeting of the Murchison and District Historical Society. Members celebrated at the Heritage Centre with a lunch catered for by Longleat Winery and entertained by Maurie Foun, an award winning Bush Poet. It was a great opportunity to reflect on progress and achievements, events and other milestones. Special guests were Loel and Bryan Thomson whose enormous support facilitated the establishment of the Heritage Centre.

The Historical Society formed in December 1985 following the very successful ‘Back-to-School’ event celebrating 125 years of education and achievement in the Murchison district. A great deal of interest was created by the display of historical information for this occasion, and lead to the formation of the historical society.

The Society gathered momentum, with well attended monthly meetings held in the Community Centre to discuss future planning and to hear a range of guest speakers. Visits were made to a variety of local sites of interest and neighbouring Historical Societies, as well as excursions further afield to history related destinations. Some members attended seminars and workshops on collecting, preservation, storage and display of all aspects of our local heritage. Much of this was facilitated through our membership of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria and the Goulburn Valley Regional Historical Group.

Early years for the Society were exciting, but it was a frustrating time for members not having any money or a home in which to work. Our early financial plight was recognised by Loel and Bryan Thomson of Noorilim, who twice made their home available for public open days to raise funds specifically for the Society. The public response was huge and thoroughly rewarding for the Society. At this time, the City

of Greater Shepparton (COGS) was able to lease the former Maternal and Child Health premises in Stevenson Street to the Society to develop the Heritage Centre. A purpose built and spacious gallery was added in 1997. The Heritage Centre provided a home for our growing collections of documents and artefacts and allowed a venue for exhibitions, special events and permanent displays.

Since then, the loyal membership has been working with a greater sense of purpose, while at the same time gaining the co-operation of the general public. Together with the support of COGS, several successful applications for government grant money and some generous local sponsors, the Society is very well placed to fulfil its original aims and objectives.

A five-year plan to improve facilities for visitors to the Heritage Centre came to fruition in 2015 when an extension to the front of the building was opened providing a meeting room, new kitchen, a research room, improved foyer area with toilet for the disabled, and ‘shop front’ entrance and all abilities access. Everyone involved to date has combined well to build a valuable resource for the benefit of future generations and develop a significant community asset.

The temporary exhibition area currently features a display about the development of the Society over these last 30 years. Come and visit the Heritage Centre and take a trip down memory lane. You are sure to recall lots of the events and exhibitions represented on show. The Heritage Centre is open each Saturday morning 10 am – 12.30 pm and entry is only a gold coin donation.

PAWS DONATIONS On Tuesday, January 12, the Tatura PAWS (Pet Art Work Show) Committee presented cheques to their chosen charities. Tatura Creative Artists and the Victory Hall Committee received cheques for $1,250 and a cheque for $2,500 will be presented to PetRescue® at a later date. The Committee has been amazed that a small community of some 3,500 people has raised such a significant amount of money. The PAWS Committee would like to that the people of Tatura and district who helped make this project such a surrounding success.

Joan, a resident of Warramunda in Kyabram, was the winner of the raffle prize of a pet portrait by Sue Graves. The most captivating pet was the carpet python, no doubt due to the number of schoolchildren who were fascinated by the snake’s artwork.

Are you aware how much getting married changes your public persona? When my husband and I decided that Rushworth was going to be our retirement tree change, the first thing we did was buy a house. We then used up our long service leave that we had accumulated in South Australia. After about eight weeks, I was climbing the walls and thought I had better find a job.

The Manager’s job at the Tatura Community House was advertised and I thought, hmmmm, that could be okay and applied. The surname Pollard, whilst not terribly unusual, is not common in the Goulburn Valley. Little did I know the selection panel at the Community House found it all rather bizarre that an application had come full of South Australian Government and Federal Government education related stuff from this address in Rushworth.

After I had won the position and got settled in, it became abundantly clear to the regular

volunteers, management and other staff, that I was not this foreigner with little or no local knowledge. My parents lived here in Tatura, I was born in the old base Hospital in Mooroopna, my father’s family had lived in the Rushworth area since the 1860’s and my cousins, although distant cousins, are scattered throughout Tatura and district.

How do I know all about my cousins in Tatura?

It’s because I am pretty big into family history and some of the intrepid investigators had tracked my father’s family to 1567 where my family appears in the Doomsday Book.

Amongst the earliest settlers in the Harston area were R. T. Beasley, Robert Buchanan and Henry Lockwood, all from Lancefield. They were followed

by Matthew Fawkner and his son John, who called their farm ‘Harston’, and thus indirectly named the village. Among their early neighbours were the Donaldsons and Collies who were the owners of ‘Springvale’.

The first church was a non-denominational one built by public subscription on the corner of the ‘Springvale’ land in 1874. The building was also used as a school in its earliest days. The church became known as the ‘Springvale Presbyterian Church, Girgarre East’ and in 1891 Collie gave the Church the building and an acre of land on a separate title. Services were held weekly from 1890 instead of twice a month and the congregation was required to contribute 55 pounds towards the Tatura minister’s stipend. The growing congregation raised the question of erecting a new church and in 1901 the present church, now known as the Harston Church, was built for 381 pounds. Attractive stained-glass windows give the church a beauty uncommon in small country churches of its type. A Pioneer Memorial window was unveiled by Rev. A. Boag in 1953 at a service commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the building.

In 1876 the school was given the name of Girgarre East No.1 and the number 1458, although until 1881, it was known locally as Baine’s School, Springvale. In 1881 the classes were removed to a new building on land given by Peter McCormack. In September 1914, a new school building was built on the site of the current school and at its opening, addresses were given by local dignitaries who praised the efficiency of the teacher, Mr Cowan. The playing of a selection of gramophone records was the highlight of the afternoon and “the final fun was produced by the efforts of the married ladies to secure a lively Leghorn rooster liberated as a prize for the successful sprinter.” (Guardian, 22 Sept 1914). unusual methods of travelling: “Jim Mulcahy had made a dog-cart and trained two dogs, Tiger and Rover, to pull it. They had real harness and he drove himself and his sister Cissie to School. (Guardian). By 1961, a plantation was in evidence, the result of the imagination of the teacher, Mr T. O’Brien, who had instituted the custom of asking each pupil to plant a tree when he or she left the school.

A tiny post office opened in 1877 and was known as Fawkner after the post-master, Mr J. Fawkner. In 1882 the name of the office was changed to Harston. A total of 1256 letters was handled at the office in 1884 during which the postal revenue amounted to thirteen pounds and ten shillings.

The Harston Memorial Hall was built on an acre of land donated by Mr J. A. Stephenson and was officially opened in 1947 by Galloway Stewart in front of 400 people. Miss Keilor Smith of Tatura was belle of the ball that followed. The hall was formerly one of the corrugated iron huts in one of the internment camps and was moved in sections to its new site by a convoy of trucks and trailers. The detached supper room was acquired from No. 1 Camp. The hall was the scene in October 1956 for the ceremony of switching on the electric power, performed by Mr H. Henderson of Tatura.

A Tennis Club was formed at Harston under the Presidency of Mr R. B. Dick in 1948, when a court was built on part of the land given for the hall. In 1957 Mr G. Greenslade donated land opposite the hall for two new courts. Other activities of note include the Bush Fire Brigade formed in 1906, The Harston CWA formed in 1956 and the Harston Youth Club formed in 1958.

Finally, in February 1941, a local pig dealer discovered a nugget of pure gold weighing just over an ounce at Harston but no gold rush ensued.

A PROVERBIAL DILEMMA

As James reviewed his notes for the following day’s lessons, he paused to ask himself if he was happy. Not simply content but absolutely happy.

He had a job that he enjoyed, his house would be paid off in another ten years, he was financially secure, his health was good and his football team won more games than they lost, but was he happy? He finally decided, that all things considered, he was probably not, as there was something very important missing. He didn’t have that one special person in his life. He’d had several girlfriends off and on over the past few years but none of them connected deep within his soul.

Now, with Valentine’s Day fast approaching, he had a difficult decision to make. Stephanie Jessop, the teacher in the room next to his, had transferred to his school during the previous year and once they’d gotten to know each other, they had hit it off tremendously well. Apart from being very attractive, she was funny, witty, loved practical jokes and was utterly politically incorrect. To cap it all off, she completely understood his quirky sense of humour and often added thoughts of her own to steer his ideas into the realms of the ridiculous and absurd. It took a while but he eventually realised that whenever he was in Stephanie’s company he was happy. But of course, that was only at work and never in a social setting. As colleagues, there was an invisible boundary that was not to be crossed.

He knew that he loved her and had decided that Valentine’s Day would be the perfect opportunity to express his love for her. However, the problem that he agonised over was the fact that she might not love him in return and once he crossed that invisible barrier, there would be no going back.

The wonderful dynamic that they currently shared would be destroyed and the outrageous laughter would be replaced by stodgy awkwardness.

James wrote out the card, carefully crafting each sentence as he poured his heart and soul into it so that the verse flowed romantically and wistfully from start to finish. Even he, who was usually quite modest and selfeffacing, acknowledged that it was a masterpiece. However, he stopped short of signing his name as he had yet to resolve his dilemma. Did he dare risk his current limited happiness for the potential over-whelming joy of reciprocated love? It was a case of all or nothing and James was not an innate gambler.

As Valentine’s Day dawned, he had not yet reached a decision as he tucked the card into his pocket and headed off to work. He had spent a restless night, first deciding one way and then the other but no clear resolution

came to mind. As he walked past Stephanie’s classroom, he saw that she still hadn’t arrived, and finally deciding that ‘a bird in the hand was worth two in the bush’, pulled out the card and wrote ‘from an admirer’ at the bottom of the verse before placing it carefully on her table. He decided that if she truly was in tune with him she would know who it was from and they could progress happily from there and if not, then que sera, sera and they could continue with their current relationship, unhindered by his inappropriate declaration of love.

He waited impatiently throughout the morning, eager to get to the staff room for morning tea to gauge her response. However when he asked her how her morning was, she simply shrugged indifferently, explaining that Valentine’s Day was just another day to her.

“Did you receive any cards?” James asked in what he hoped was an offhand manner.

Stephanie laughed. “Oh yes, I always receive quite a few from the children.”

“So nothing special then?”

Stephanie shrugged. “They’re all special. It’s really sweet of them.”

James realised that if he pressed her any further he would over-play his hand and he was also a little miffed at being lumped in with a bunch of grade five children so he let it drop and changed the subject.

The months continued to pass and their relationship, whilst still stimulating, simply meandered along at a colleague level. For James, the moment to declare his love seemed to have passed and when Stephanie accepted promotion at another school, they slowly drifted apart despite their best intentions of staying in touch. James eventually found another girl who made him laugh and they had three fine children. However, as Valentine’s Day rolled around each year, he couldn’t help but wonder how different his life may have been if he’d just had the courage to tell Stephanie that he loved her.

His wife died at the ripe old age of eighty and his children promptly bundled James off into a retirement home so that he could live out his remaining days in a clinical combination of comfort and austerity. And it was on Valentine’s Day two years later that the miracle occurred.

He was just about to sit down in his usual place in the dining room for breakfast when he heard Stephanie’s familiar tinkling laughter. At first he thought his mind was playing tricks on him, particularly as it was Valentine’s Day, but then she walked around the corner and he knew it was her. She

“It’s Stephanie isn’t it?” he said breathlessly.

She peered at him, a smile still on her lips. “Do I know you?” she asked. “Are you my doctor?”

“It’s me, James O’Neil. We taught at Middlelake Primary School together.”

“Did we? Oh yes, of course we did. I remember now,” she replied vaguely.

She began to move past him and he put his hand on her arm. “I sent you a Valentine’s card,” he suddenly blurted. “It was me all those years ago, not one of your children.”

“Was it really? What a sweet thing to do.” She patted his arm in return.

James could hardly contain his excitement.

“And here we are together all these years later and it’s Valentine’s Day again. I believe fate has brought us back together for one last hurrah.”

“Hurrah,” she echoed softly before looking at him intently. “Do I know you? Is it time for my pills?”

He watched sadly as she shuffled past him and thought to himself that he had been let down by the wrong proverb all those years ago.

He should have used ‘strike while the iron is hot’. He shrugged as he returned sadly to his seat. “It’s all water under the bridge now,” he thought.

He was interrupted by a firm tap on his shoulder and he looked around to see Stephanie laughing at him. “It’s nice to see I haven’t lost my touch,” she said with an impish smile. “You thought I was senile didn’t you? I got you well and good.

Come on, admit it.”

“Well I …” he stuttered.

“And do you know something else? I do remember that Valentine card. I thought you were playing a joke with me so I just played along but then you never owned up, so I wasn’t sure.”

“It was no joke and I meant every word of it,” he replied solemnly.

“Well in that case, you and I have a lot of catching up to do.” She kissed him warmly on the cheek. “Happy Valentine’s day!”

MURCHISON SWIMMING POOL Murchison Swimming pool now has thermal pool covers to keep the pool warm longer thanks to a Sporting Futures Grant from Greater Shepparton City Council. The pool committee expect the pool covers will keep the pool warmer for longer, extending the swimming season and allowing the pool to be used well into March. The covers also help to reduce evaporation and chlorine loss. We are looking ahead to an earlier start to next season. New picnic tables have arrived as well and a new shade cloth for the toddler pool has been installed, making the swimming complex even better.

Come down and enjoy the clear, cool water or enjoy reading a book on the lush green lawn. We’re open every day from 1pm if the temperature is above 23 degrees. Daily entry is $15 per family or $4 per adult and $3.50 per child and season passes are available. The pool is also available to hire for celebrations. A beeline he makes direct and swift,

Stares and silence fill the room.

Eyes widen and suspense is about.

He holds out his hand and smiles quite wide, Come on girl, come home with me.

She follows his lead and bows her head, Long lashes gliding and brushing the air.

How she got in here no one understands, The local pub is no place for a horse.

First thing to do is fix the back gate, That lock has been troublesome for some time now.

Can’t have the beauty roaming free again, The open paddock is where she is best Still an interesting outing for her at least.

Everybody Has A Story MADEMOISELLES DE PARIS Early last August, my wife Margaret and I were enjoying a trip on the Eurostar high speed train from London to Paris. We planned to spend three days in Paris before departing for Barcelona and two weeks in Spain. Leaving the Eurostar at Gare Du Nord station, we then had a short train journey on the Paris metro to the suburb of Chateau Rouge where we had booked four nights at a private apartment through Airbnb.

Emerging from the subway onto the street at Chateau Rouge, we were confronted by a bustling crowd of Africans dressed in colourful West African attire and for an instant we thought the train had magically taken us to Bamako, the capital of Mali, with so many food market stalls lining the footpath we were forced to walk on the road which was almost completely covered with cardboard, plastic packaging and other assorted rubbish. However, my confusion was resolved when I noted that the few rubbish free patches of street were paved with patterned blue cobblestones and flanked by beautiful old six storey apartments, which is something you won’t find in Bamako.

However, as we jostled our way through the throng, another feature of Bamako was conspicuous by its absence. We were not being chased down the street and hassled to buy something. These people were much more relaxed, knowing that if their selling skills failed them, there were always French unemployment benefits to fall back on. The unfamiliar sights, smells and sounds of the numerous stalls selling fish, meat, fruit and vegetables invaded our senses as we ducked and weaved our way through the lively collection of humanity. After brushing shoulders with men sporting armfuls of cheap watches and jewellery and women with charcoal barbeques roasting corn cobs, we finally broke free and made our way to the apartment.

The landlady was away and had therefore arranged for her next door neighbour to show us in. They were a visiting Canadian couple in their fifties who were staying with their daughter who worked in Paris. After being invited in for drinks and nibblies and a lengthy exchange of life

histories, we eventually retreated to our own apartment and flopped gratefully into bed. As it was a warm night, we opened the glass panelled doors to the small balcony overhanging the street and in addition to the light breeze, we were also treated to the never ending loud conversations and arguments drifting up from the street below.

We were woken early the next morning by the sound of garbage trucks as they cleaned up the mess from the previous day’s activities. As we left the apartment for our guided tour of the Louvre, the Africans were hard at work restocking their stalls for another day’s trading. Before boarding the train, I needed to buy tickets from the vending machine. I had 120 euros (A$180) in a secure pocket and after taking out the money, I momentarily put the 100 euro note in my open shirt pocket while I used the 20 euro note to buy the tickets. I then moved away to allow others to use the machine and sorted my tickets and change as we headed for the turnstiles.

After a brief trip on a crowded peak hour train, we arrived at Louvre Palais station and spent fifteen minutes locating a monument where we were to meet our tour group. As we were early, I decided to wander around the large public square taking in city sights and was approached by a young woman holding a clipboard. Thrusting the clipboard at me, she asked if I would add my details and signature to a petition she was interested in.

Her rushed manner and vagueness of her cause made me suspect that it was some kind of scam so I decided to play her silly game and stood there holding the clipboard with a sarcastic smile on my face while I decided whether I was going to be Donald Duck or Mick Jagger.

The trouble was, although I smelt a rat, I was looking up the wrong drain pipe because another young woman rushed in from left field, flung her arms around my neck and pleaded, “Please …..pleeeeeeease?!” A nanosecond later, and before my ageing brain had a chance to process the ramifications of this latest turn of events, Margaret charged into the scrum and, wedging herself between me and the neck hugger, shouted, “Get away from these girls you old fool!”

I now found myself savouring the experience of being molested simultaneously by three good looking women, when the smile was abruptly wiped off my face as I suddenly remembered that I had forgotten to transfer the 100 euros back into my secure pocket after I had left the ticketing machine. I sheepishly poked my fingers into my shirt pocket to confirm what I already feared, the one hundred euros was missing!

My mood now swung from mild shock to anger, although I was more angry with myself for having been so careless than with the gypsy girls. I ran after them waving my fist and shouting abuse, attracting the attention of everybody around me, hoping that one of them may have been the police patrolling the area. One of the girls turned around, and catching the sight of me screaming and charging at them like Conan the Barbarian, gave me a look of pure terror before fleeing into the crowd.

Knowing there was little I could do, I dejectedly turned back when a man walked up to me and asked, “Is this your money, sir?” as he held out a 100 euro note. I can only conclude that these women were known to the police and were afraid of being apprehended if I continued my crazy war dance, so they dropped the evidence which was then picked up by an honest witness to the whole affair.

We then spent the rest of the day wandering around the Louvre and looking at the amazing collection of art.

The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect. Elder abuse is vastly under-reported but the World Health Organisation estimates that up to 10 per cent of older people worldwide are affected.

Register now for the 4th National Elder Abuse Conference! Hosted by Seniors Rights Victoria. The conference will take place from February 23-25 at the Pullman on the Park, Melbourne. The Conference will focus on the rights of older people to live life free from ageism and elder abuse.

From preventative programs, to early interventions and later responses, speakers will share stories about the ways we can observe the rights of older people, which include identifying and meeting the wishes of older people as well as ensuring their safety. This conference will showcase innovative and collaborative approaches to tackling elder abuse, which will inform our practice and inspire us with vision and energy.

The Murchison Historical Society recently bid farewell to a much loved and esteemed member, Jan Hillgrove who has gone to live in Woodend to be nearer her daughter. Jan was a member of the Society from the beginning, thirty years ago, and over this time served on the Executive committee, many years as secretary and several as treasurer. A willing helper in many different ways, Jan lent her hand when events required it such as catering, ticket selling or fundraising. Jan had a strong sense of fun and enjoyment whatever the task, and always with a happy disposition, which brought cohesiveness to any group she was working with. Jan will be missed and not only by the Society. CWA will miss her, as well as the local primary school where Jan was an excellent volunteer and dearly loved.

Members of the Executive gathered at Wagner’s Produce Store for a coffee and chat and presented Jan with a gift of azaleas, flowers and lots of good wishes for her relocation to Woodend. We have it on good authority that the azaleas are already at home in the two planters presented to Jan by the school and they look just great beside her new front door! Farewell Jan, and thank-you for your many years of valued contribution to the Murchison and District Historical Society.

NO JAB, NO PAY HAS STARTED

The No Jab, No Pay legislation designed to improve national immunisation rates and provide a stronger incentive for immunisation has now passed both Houses of Federal Parliament. The legislation means that from January 1, parents will need to ensure their child’s immunisations are up-to-date if they are to continue receiving Child Care Benefit, Child Care Rebate and an FTB-A payment.

“Most immunisations are free,” Federal Member for Murray Sharman Stone said. “This legislation is important for community health and for the safety our children. Immunisation is the safest and most effective way to protect our children from the various serious diseases like polio, whooping cough, tetanus and diphtheria. Parents may still choose not to vaccinate their child, but cannot then access taxpayer funded support. The no jab, no pay policy

recognises the fact that medical research overwhelmingly supports babies and children being protected from disease. Exemptions will still apply for children who have a natural immunity or allergies to specific medicines, if diagnosed by a general practitioner. Objections to vaccination on the basis of personal or philosophical beliefs will no longer be valid for the objector to still receive payments. We have childhood immunisation coverage of around 92 per cent in Australia. Coverage of up to 95 per cent is required to stop the spread of diseases such as measles and whooping cough.”

Hedge shears or good sharp secateurs are the best tools for the job, and don’t forget to protect your hands and arms from rose thorns with gloves and long sleeves.

FEBRUARY GARDEN GUIDE Hello everyone, get your gloves, boots and shovel ready as there is plenty of work to do in the garden this month. Also, water, water, water during dry periods. Deep watering trains roots to grow down making plants less vulnerable to heat and drought. And of course mulch, not just to keep weeds at bay or for the benefits of it and also conditioning your soil but for the sake of having to spend less time out watering yourself in the February heat. A bonus to doing this is saving your water bill.

Summer heat, hot dry winds, high humidity, and fungal problems can all affect the health and appearance of rose plants in mid to late summer.

Leggy growth, spindly stems and sparse twiggy growth are all signs that your roses need a summer prune. Summer pruning roses refreshes and reinvigorates the plants and they will respond in a matter of weeks, putting on new growth, ready for another flush of flowers. It’s not tricky, just

Handy hint – Did you know you can time your summer rose pruning to produce blooms for a party or special event? Around 42 days (allow up to 49 days in cooler zones) after pruning, most roses will be lush and blooming.

After pruning, collect up all the fallen leaves and stems and bin these, don’t compost them. This will help to reduce the number of disease spores that could reinfect new growth. Next, apply a layer of mulch like sugar cane, lucerne or pea straw to retain soil moisture and follow up with weekly applications of Thrive to encourage healthy foliage growth and lots of flowers. Keep an eye out for mites, aphids and fungal diseases on your roses this month.

Some people like to prune fruit trees after the summer fruits have been picked. This is a good idea as it helps minimise chances of getting diseases.

Repot your cyclamens now into a good quality potting mix and fertilise.

Put bulbs such as tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocus in the refrigerator now. Chill them for at least six weeks before planting.

Prune flowered branches off bougainvilleas for another flush of flowers.

Give them a feed of complete fertilizer and water in well. Lift and divide established bearded iris. Discard old and diseased rhizomes. When replanting leave one-third of the rhizome above the soil level.

The kangaroo paw is another headache when it comes to the 'Ink Spot' disease. After flowering, cut foliage back hard in early summer. Using drippers to water will reduce the risk of disease coming back as its overhead watering that can help cause this disease. Don’t be afraid to prune hard, commercial growers use rotary mowers.

TOOLAMBA LIONS CLUB The Toolamba Lions Club Twilight Christmas Festival was again a great night of family fun. The change of date to late November proved successful, with ideal weather and a great turn out of local families. There was lots of children’s entertainment, with the Dookie Lions Club train, the Scouts’ abseiling wall, face-painting, fairy floss, camel rides, a bouncing castle, a magic show and sumo wrestling suits. The Christmas pudding competition was judged by Jeff and Glenda Alexander from Tatura Hot Bread and was won by Elaine Read.

The Toolamba Lions Club was grateful for help from Toolamba Forest Branch and Tatura Lions Club and for sponsorship from local businesses, Moretto Builders, Paul Wickham Pharmacy, Tom Hogan Auto Repairs,

Tollair Services and Merritt Funeral Services.

There was a great turnout for Toolamba’s first evening of Christmas Carols on December 11. The Lion’s club put on a free sausage sizzle and everyone enjoyed a relaxed evening of Christmas music with Laurie Thomson an excellent MC. The newly-formed choir did a fantastic job and the Kinder and Primary School children added to the festive atmosphere.

Campbell Young, Tori Fifoot and Amanda Basile all gave excellent solo performances and Pat Patt read, ‘The Night before Christmas’ to the children. A collection of almost $300 was taken for the Smith Family Christmas Appeal. Well done Amanda for making it all happen. Everyone is looking forward to next year’s event.

MEAT PIE RECIPE Commercially produced meat pies just cannot compare to the home made variety but most of us don't prepare them at home because of the work involved. With modern day appliances and ready-made pastry sheets, it really is very simple to add these to your family menus in five easy steps:1) Cook diced meat of your choice with some bacon and onion (any quantity that suits you) until meat is tender.

2) Add a little Gravox powder to thicken.

3) Put a sheet of Puff Pastry in the bottom of a greased pie plate.

Add meat mixture and cover with second sheet of pastry.

4) Brush milk on top if wanted (to brown the pastry as it cooks) and put two cuts on top to allow steam to escape.

5) Bake for 30 minutes in oven at 180 degrees.

The cheapest of meat cuts can be used though the length of time it is cooked will vary because of this. I usually like to cook mine for approximately one hour. I also like to add an Oxo Cube and sometimes some grated cheese but you can use your imagination to make any pie varied. I have on occasion used capsicum, peppers, mushrooms and even pickles.

As our phobia list continues, I should clarify what an actual phobia is. Just because you’re worried about sharks when you go swimming doesn’t mean you have a phobia (unless of course you’re swimming in a backyard pool).

To be wary about your surroundings is both normal and wise. Phobias are different. This is the definition from the Mayo Clinic – ‘A phobia is an overwhelming and unreasonable fear of an object or situation that poses little real danger but provokes anxiety and avoidance. Unlike the brief anxiety most people feel when they give a speech or take a test, a phobia is long lasting, causes intense physical and psychological reactions, and can affect your ability to function normally at work or in social settings.’

So, now that we’ve clarified that and you realise you’re normal after all, let’s get on with the list.

61. Mottephobia – The morbid fear of moths, (from the German ‘motte’ meaning moths).

Although this is similar to the irrational fear of butterflies, in many cases mottephobics are only bothered by moths. Butterflies don’t worry them. Apparently it is the way that moths look coupled with the fact that they can fly into your house and flutter around a light that creates this fear. The blood sucking vampire moths can also be quite scary but fortunately they only exist in movies.

62. Zoophobia – The abnormal fear of animals (from the Greek ‘zoo’ meaning animals). This is not the sensible fear of dangerous or threatening animals such as tigers or venomous snakes but the fear of all animals including cute and cuddly household pets. This is among the most painful phobic disorders because animals are everywhere and as sufferers cannot stand to be within the vicinity of any animal, they are prone to suffering constant panic attacks. The fear of being forced to watch yet another cat video on U-tube should not be considered abnormal.

63. Bananaphobia – The irrational fear

of bananas. I admit that seeing bananas in pyjamas coming down the stairs in pairs could be considered scary in some circumstances but otherwise it is very hard to make any sense of this phobia. Sufferers avoid the fruit and vegetable section of the supermarket and many claim that eating over-ripe bananas is the same as eating slugs. Having avoided eating slugs for my entire life, I’ll take their word for it. Perhaps it’s the music of Bananarama that initially triggered this phobia.

64. Bambakomallophobia – The fear of cotton balls (from the Greek ‘bambaki’ meaning cotton). This is a sensory phobia where an individual panics at the thought of making contact with a cotton ball. They need to get somebody else to open medicine bottles for them and remove the cotton packing. These individuals usually have highly sensitive or acute auditory sensation and claim that hearing the movement, stretching, and tearing produced by cotton wool is akin to the sound of ‘nails on a chalkboard.’ Plastic foam can also be linked into this phobia. However, as phobias go, this is probably the number one best sounding phobia.

65. Scelerophobia – The irrational fear of crime, (from the Latin ‘scelero’ meaning wickedness). The fear of crime is normal and the extent of the fear will depend on various factors such as age, gender, past experience and neighbourhood. However, phobics take this fear to an extreme level, locking up their houses tighter than Fort Knox and then constantly checking and rechecking their locks. Many refuse to step out of their home after dark or travel to lonely places for the fear of being attacked or robbed. Their phobia leads to constant fatigue as it causes them to believe that they need to be vigilant all the time.

66. Sitophobia – The irrational fear of food (from the Greek ‘sitos’ meaning bread). This phobia is more common in young children who may have had a negative experience such as choking or vomiting. Persons with this phobia

will only eat enough to sustain themselves and may not find eating pleasurable and satisfying but rather as something that can make them both sick and fat. This can lead to anorexia in teenagers.

67. Phasmophobia – The irrational fear of ghosts, (from the Greek ‘phasmos’ meaning phantom). This is related to fear of the dark and assuming that everything that goes bump in the night is an evil spectre out to get you.

However, if you actually did come face to face with a ghost, then this fear would no longer be considered irrational. When this occurs you know who to call.

68. Equinophobia – The extreme fear of horses (from the Greek ‘equus’ meaning horse). In almost all cases, this phobia has developed from a negative or traumatic experience related to horses. A child having been bitten, kicked, thrown off or trampled by an angry horse, will forever remember the experience well into his adulthood. Clearly, Prince Charles does not suffer from this phobia.

69. Musophobia – The morbid fear of mice and rats, (from the Greek ‘mus’ meaning mice). This is a very common phobia affecting hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. While some people think of mice as cute and cuddly, phobics tend to regard them as disgusting and disease carriers. Unfortunately for rats, they have yet to overcome the bad press they received during the Black Plague.

70. Catoptrophobia – The irrational fear of mirrors (from the Greek ‘catropto’ meaning mirror). Modern society is highly obsessed with unreasonable notions of beauty and body image and some people are afraid of looking into mirrors from fear of not meeting the set standards of beauty. Mirrors also remind us that we’re no longer as young or fit as we used to be. However, don’t worry if you fall into this category as this has nothing to do with this particular phobia. In the majority of cases, the fear of mirrors can be traced back to mankind’s fear of still waters. Before the invention of mirrors, humans saw their reflection in the still waters of lakes and rivers and often thought that ‘it was their soul staring back at them.’ This gave rise to the concept that the soul could be separated from the body even before death, and many folktales developed around this idea. For example, a disturbance in a character’s reflection in a lake, forebode impending doom or disaster. This led to the later association between shattered mirrors and bad luck. Catoptromancy or mirror divination was a type of black magic practiced by people in the early 17th century. The practitioners would dip metallic mirrors into the water and study the sick person’s reflection in order to divine whether the patient would live or die.

Pop culture, media, books and movies often show evil spirits trapped inside mirrors coming to haunt people. Vampires are also shown as having no reflection since they do not have any souls. Obviously that’s why they slick their hair down, as combing it would present a problem.

SANTA BRAVES THE HEAT It’s a long way from the North Pole to Tatura, but a very dedicated Santa still made it to the Tatura Community Market on Saturday December 19.

Even in the forty-degree heat, many families turned up to have a chat to Santa. The Tatura Fire Brigade, very kindly delivered Santa to Stuart Mock Place on a huge fire truck, much to the delight of the young ones present. Despite the heat, about a dozen hardy market stall holders, including several new ones, braved the conditions to sell their wares.

During the day, five new prospective stall holders put their names down for the next market. Markets will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month until March when they will go into recess to recommence on Saturday September 24. Market days are January 23, February 27 and March 26 and will run from 8:30am to 1pm.

Saturday, May 7 will see the Tatura Community House run their Monster Garage and Farm Gate Sale. This will be the fourth year the Community House has run the very successful Monster Community Garage Sale.

This year a farm gate sale will be included to encourage the farming community to join in.

All these fantastic community events are an initiative of the Tatura Community House which continues to look for ways to encourage tourists to visit our town.

AUSTRALIAN SLANG AND IDIOMS My mother once told me about an incident that occurred during the Second World War. She had been posted to Brisbane to work with the Americans and she heard a story about an American aircraft mechanic who was seen running frantically down the middle of a runway. When he finally stopped, he was asked what all the fuss was about and he replied, “I asked one of the Australian mechanics if I could borrow a spanner and he told me, “Go for your life”. So naturally I ran.”

The everyday language that we use is full of idioms that we don’t give a second thought about but to somebody not born here, they can be quite confusing. Even very simple expressions can cause difficulty. An Indian friend of mine told me about a driving lesson she was having and the instructor told her to pull over. Even though her command of English is very good, the term ‘pull over’ is not used in India and she had no idea that the instructor was asking her to stop.

Therefore, to help out our friends of foreign birth,

PERSONAL SAFETY ON A NIGHT OUT Hello 2016! What a great time of the year to catch up with friends. However bringing up the topic of personal safety to a young adult as they walk out the door for a big night out won’t have much impact. “Be careful” … door slams!

I wanted to share some thoughts that you could include in these conversations with the young adults you love, about personal safety on a night out. Living in Greater Shepparton we should be able to have fun and be free from violence and other dangerous situations. The crime statistics show that we do enjoy a safe environment. That said, if we place ourselves in dangerous situations the risk of violence increases. By looking after each other and taking some simple precautions, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable night out for you and your friends.

Plan Your Night.

Before you leave – ID, mobile and money for food and transport.

How am I getting home?

Designated driver?

Share your plan with family and keep them updated.

Drink Safely Alcohol affects everybody differently. Get to know your personal limits and stick to them.

Save yourself from regrets and remember how much you drink is up to you!

Eat substantial food before and while drinking.

Alternate with water throughout night.

Never mix alcohol and drugs.

If you cannot remember how many drinks you have had, it’s time to slow down.

Cars – no no no! Never as the driver and only as the passenger if alcohol involved.

Our super Monster will cover farming and small acreages right across the district and will include the area down to the Waranga Basin Wall, Geodetic/Watsons Road across the Rochester Kyabram Road, McKenzie Road across to the Murchison / Mooroopna Road.

BEWARE OF THESE SCAMS People in the Murray electorate should be on alert from a number of scams which have been circulating the community attempting to take advantage of vulnerable people. Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said, “The latest scam to hit people is a fake email disguising itself as an email from the Federal Government’s Department of Human Services. I encourage all those who receive an email such as this, to not respond, delete the email and then report it to ScamWatch. It is important to remember that the Department of Human Services does not send formal emails or notifications to private email accounts.

Formal correspondence is only ever sent as either hardcopy mail to a person’s nominated address or as electronic mail to their myGov account. There are also many fake phone calls going around the community. People call you

and impersonate a government official and try to explain that you have been over taxed or you are owed money due to excess fees you may have paid. The person may then give you another number to call to talk to a manger of sorts, and at one point try to take your bank details from you. If the Federal Government is going to give anybody some sort of financial compensation or payment, they will send a formal letter in the mail and will not ask for a person’s bank details. I advise everyone who has a suspicion that someone is trying to scam them to not hand over any bank details or send any money until you have clearly identified the legitimacy of the call, email, or sometimes even letter. Our Annual General Meeting in November was attended by our Group President Judith Poole and Group Secretary Pat Love. We thank them all for continuing on in these positions and for all the work they have done over the past twelve months.

Our December meeting and Christmas breakup was held at Hilltop and enjoyed by all.

Instead of Kris Kringle presents, members donated money to buy Chocolate Christmas stockings, colouring books and pencils for children affected by domestic violence who pass through the Marian Community Agency.

Our branch has a continuing commitment to this much needed welfare agency and throughout the year, donations of clothing, bedding, toys, Easter eggs and other items are to be made.

Members also baked Christmas goodies for the State Christmas Fair held at CWA Headquarters in early December, a much needed fundraiser for CWA to continue its welfare commitments.

Our CWA year kicks off with the Junior Branch’s meeting on Thursday February 4 at Hodson House. The girls will be doing paper craft and making ‘spider’ drinks, something their generation know little about but was part of the older CWA members’ teenage years.

Their competition is a picture of their favourite animal. Our Senior Branch meeting on Thursday February 11 at the Senior Citizen’s rooms will see members finishing off the trauma dolls prepared by Helen Hopcraft and the competition is ‘favourite kitchen gadget’.

Our luncheon date is February 25 and the Group Conference will be held on February 11 at The Hub in Mooroopna.

Our Annual Christmas Raffle was very well supported. The Hamper was won by Veronica Dowell and Amanda Gundrill won the box of Unilever products. All monies raised from our fundraising throughout the year stay in Tatura and are used to buy extra items for the Hospital and Park Villa Aged Care Facility.

MURCHISON & DISTRICT SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB Goulburn Valley TREE GROUP With more scorchers forecast for the next few weeks the last thing on our minds is the planting of new trees, or anything else for that matter. However, that wonderful rain we had recently will certainly give things a kick along, and most certainly the seedlings that have already reached the tubed stage. The acacias have to be seen to be believed. This not being paradise, not everything is perfect and five trays of the special varieties grown by request, have failed to germinate. This will need some research as well as being disappointing.

We have to thank our Good Samaritan, Carolyn Minns from Tatura Farm Supplies for once again unloading and stacking our packs of growing mix. We would be really scratching our heads without her assistance.

You will be pleased to know that we have agreed to hold tube prices at their current level, however, all will be in the advertisements prior to the selling season. Unless there is good early rain don’t even think of planting before mid-March, although it doesn’t hurt to have your ground prepared. We are always grateful to have tubes recycled but please, no garden pots.

Like all good poems, this poem needs to be read out aloud in order to gain the full effect.

She looked in the mirror And studied her face, Not a classic beauty But an ageless grace.

Her mouth was too large For her beautiful smile, And her clear blue eyes Showed a soul without guile.

They met at the café, He said, “I hope this is fate, To meet a beautiful woman On a Valentine’s date.

She thought he was handsome And said, “My name’s Kay. Perhaps we should order, I haven’t eaten all day.”

He waved to the waiter And said, “I’m Jim Cole, I work in accounting, It’s a challenging role."

They discovered each other As the blind date progressed, To enjoy such a night, They felt they were blessed.

He thought Kay was spirited And unbridled fun, And dared to believe That she was the one.

However for Kay, One thing was quite plain, When this night ended She wouldn’t see him again.

When your mouth is quite large Then one obvious goal, Is to never be known, As Mrs Kay Cole. * * * * * * For those readers who are scratching their heads wondering what the final verse is about, I refer you to conversation I had with Ma Merle.

John: What did you think of the poem?

Ma: It was okay I suppose but the last verse didn’t make any sense.

John: Surely you got the joke.

Ma: What joke and what’s the point about her big mouth?

John: Read the sentence out aloud again.

Ma (after reading the sentence another four times): So? John (slightly frustrated): Kay Cole ….Cake hole. Don’t you get it?

That’s why I mentioned her big mouth.

Ma: Nobody in Tatura’s going to get that. You’ll have to change it.

John (voice rising a little): I can’t change it. That last verse is the whole point of the poem.

Ma: But nobody’s going to get it so the last verse is pointless.

John: I think you under estimate our readers.

Ma: I don’t think so. If you have to explain your poems then they can’t be any good so stick to writing stories. Your poems are …

So hopefully there were quite a few readers who understood my little play on words and have therefore proven to Ma Merle that the Bulletin readers in Tatura are quite capable of getting it, even if she isn’t.

TATURA FILM SOCIETY The Tatura Film Society Enters its Second Year February signals the screening of our 10th movie, ‘A Separation’ and the opportunity for additional people to join the Tatura Film Society. It has been a great first year of movies, cuppas and conversations for members and their guests on the third Monday evening of the month.

2016 will be our second year of operation and our next program of movies commences on March 21. We meet at the Tatura Mechanics

Institute and we’re looking forward to the next program of movies which has been based on responses from the current members. The new season includes a wide variety of genre, most are in English, a few are subtitled, some are challenging, while others are just humorous.

It’s been great to connect with many people from the Tatura area who enjoy a good film.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB

Over the Christmas New Year break, a couple of local Tatura Bowls Club events were finalised. The Men's Club Championship saw John Crilly take out his fifth Club Championship title defeating Jason Carter, a previous two-time club champion. In the Ladies B Grade Championship final, Frances Britten defeated Jenny Johnson. All other club games are still in contention and members are encouraged to play them by the scheduled playing date.

30 Years Ago…

After 45 years of dedicated service to the people of Tatura, the town’s longest serving doctor, Dr Des Lally is leaving the district. Dr Lally and his new bride, Mary, moved to Tatura after his graduation with the intention of staying for three or four years. “The war put a stop to that, and we have been here ever since,” he said.

Many Tatura residents look upon Dr Lally as one of the last of the traditional family doctors that give that personal family touch. Many of those who were brought into the world by Dr Lally have since had children delivered by him, and proudly boast being one of the lovable medic’s ‘success stories’.

When Dr Lally first came to Tatura he bought the premises in Walsh Street and turned it into his medical practice. In 1952, Dr Lally was joined by his partner Dr Hodson and later by Dr Kerr. His memories of the early days in his practice are still accurate. Dr Lally held the position of medical officer for the prisoner of war camps during the Second World War and the experience fostered a number of friendships for him. “Some of the men were highly educated and very interesting to talk to he said.” Dr Lally was also the Shire of Rodney’s medical officer up until his retirement in 1983.

***** A paddle-steamer on the Goulburn River between Mooroopna and Shepparton was not an ‘acceptable’ risk to native fish habitat according to a report released to the Ministry of Conservation, Forests and Lands.

The report, written by Warm Water Ecology Program co-ordinator, Dr John Anderson, outlines many areas he has described as major concerns.

His report says that large numbers of logs were found throughout the river and indicates that extensive dredging and de-snagging would be required, initially, and on a continuing basis to operate the vessel. He said that if this is the case then approval to operate the vessel should be denied on the grounds that it will degrade or destroy an important part of the most valuable natural habitat for Murray Cod remaining in Victoria.

Dr Anderson said, “The council couldn’t have chosen a worse section of the river. The potential for river damage is horrendous when you consider it is one of the state’s last bastions of Murray Cod habitat.” ***** The Tatura Chamber of Commerce is in danger of folding unless there is a better ‘turn up’ at the rescheduled annual meeting to be held in February.

Only four people attended the annual meeting. “This is not even enough to hold an official meeting,” said Tony Nappa, the public relations officer for the chamber. Mr Nappa said that the chamber was only reformed in January last year after being disbanded five years previously due to lack of enthusiasm by the business people of the town.

100 LAP CHALLENGE ON AGAIN

A Pleasant Walk Along Broken Creek

BROKEN CREEK MID-WEEK WALK As usual, we met at 9.00am behind the Shepparton Council Offices and car pooled before setting off.

The starting point for our walk was at Dip Bridge on the Katamatite -Nathalia Road. We had morning tea at this pleasant spot next to the Broken Creek which is part of the Boosey Broken Creek State Park.

While waiting for the car shuffle to happen it was good having a catch up with each other as well as watching a pair of Willie Wagtails taking turns sitting on a nest not far from the water’s edge. Because the day was quite warm we were glad that there were some shady spots as we walked along Hester Road, that runs adjacent to the Broken Creek. Some of the time we were able to follow a track along the water’s edge where there were plenty of trees providing us with shade. Further along it was interesting to see where the Boosey Creek runs into the Broken Creek.

At the end of our walk, not far from Katamatite, we had covered an estimated seven kilometres.

Nine walkers, two celebrating birthdays, ate lunch while sitting outside the cafe at Katamatite where we purchased drinks etc. I'm sure we all enjoyed the exercise, fresh air, each other’s company and seeing some interesting countryside on our walk.

On Saturday February 27, the annual 100 lap challenge will be held at the Tatura swimming pool. The event has run for 21 years and originated from a bet in the pub about who could swim 100 laps. The event raises funds for the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Nursing Home. Over the years the event has evolved to include teams as well as individual swimmers. Several teams from the community, service clubs and families now enter each year along with the stalwart individuals who always swim the 100 laps.

Each swimmer or team is expected to raise a minimum $100 sponsorship.

There are no costs involved in staging the event and all funds go directly to the Hospital and Parkvilla. Over the years more than $55,000 has been raised and recent funds from this event have provided new beds, new Ventolin pumps, a piano, an oxygen concentrator, bladder scanner and refurbishment of the front garden and fencing to improve the amenity for Parkvilla residents. I wasn’t sure about the Rome and Carmine Delmonico series but she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Macquarie University for her meticulous research so they may be worth tracking down.

I expect it has always been easy to get distracted in one way or another. We may be talking to someone and something catches our attention out of the corner of our eye and we lose eye contact with the person we are with, lose the connection with the topic at hand and lose the confidence of our companion n.

Maybe we are sitting with someone who has a deep story to be shared but we allow ourselves to be more concerned with where we have come from or what we need to do next. There could be a tough challenge we have started tackling only to then shift our focus on to the myriad of lesser matters and miss the goal.

Areas such as these are hard enough to bring under control but we seem to have welcomed a whole new set of distractions into every corner of our existence so that real interpersonal connection and wellbeing are at risk. The jogger venturing across the road in front of me with headphones on, the couple at a restaurant table glued to their own smartphones, attendees at a presentation busily tweeting one another about trivial aspects of the presenter, video screens mesmerising us in places where otherwise real conversation and wonder would have filled the space, and so we could go on. It’s time to learn again how to be present in and savour the moment, not being fearful of a little silence. There is so much richness around if we would slow down a little, simplify and be alert rather than being dazzled by the innumerable inputs and demands vying for our attention.

Jesus had to remind a friend called Martha of this when he dropped in on her family one day. While preparing a meal was helpful at that time, it was more important just to sit and be part of the conversation, (Luke 10:38-42 is worth pondering awhile). The call for all of us is to be still and listen to God’s word, see what He is doing and give Him our thanks, praise and obedience, that’s the source of real peace and joy.
