A STAR IS BORN

Recently, customers of Tatura Hot Bread were given an unexpected treat when youthful busker Sophie Petterlin entertained with her violin. Sophie is the eight year old granddaughter of long time Tatura residents Betty and Martin Montgomery, and loves to play the violin.

Busking outside the Bakery was her own idea, with all funds raised ($83.45) donated to the Tatura Hospital.

BECOMING AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN

Rosalynn Wright I thought readers of the Bulletin might be interested in the saga of me becoming an Australian citizen. I came out to Australia in 1956 at the age of nine, along with my mum, dad and brother, aged seven. After quite a few years, I met my husband John, and because he was Australian, I assumed that I became Australian once I was married.

Fast forward a few years and I was watching SBS when an advert came on stating that even

though you are married to an Australian, you are not an Australian citizen. So, as I was keen to become an Australian citizen, I decided to find out how to become one. I duly received the relevant forms and it was then that the nightmares began. Firstly, they wanted to know what my passport number was but I didn’t have one, as I came out on my parent’s.

Then they wanted to know the ship we came out on and the date of arrival in Melbourne.

Well, I knew the name of the ship and I worked out that the date we arrived was two days prior to the start of the Melbourne Olympic Games.

So far, so good.

But then, because I didn’t have a passport, I had to prove that I had been in Australia for more than five years. This was easy (so I thought), I had been married to John for fifteen years and had my three daughters at the Preston and Northcote Hospital. But no, this wasn’t sufficient. I was asked to produce my tax file number but I didn’t have one as I had been at home looking after my children and hadn’t worked at a job. So John said he would sign a stat. dec. stating that I had been with him for more than five years but again the bureaucracy said no. At this stage I was afraid I could be deported so in desperation, I asked

what I could do and was informed that I could get a letter from my bank manager stating that I had had an account with them for more than five years. I thought this was strange as I could have been in Fiji and still had a bank account here for five years. But needless to say, I didn’t argue and duly received the letter.

Some months later I received notification informing me that I would receive my Citizenship at a ceremony to be held in Melbourne as the local council was not running them at the time. So off I went to the city, and in a room full of people, I waited until my name was called. It was the only Anglo Saxon one on the day and everyone turned to look at me as though I was a rare sight. The certificate I finally received was signed by someone with a Russian name, so I hope I am Australian and not Russian!

One thing that annoys John now is that we applied for passports and all I needed to produce was my Citizenship Certificate, whereas he had to pay for a copy of his Birth Certificate as they didn’t accept his Extract of Birth Certificate.

I am a proud Aussie and wouldn’t give it up for anything. I love this country and what it has given me.

Tanya Sayers has been dancing since she was three years old, is in the 10th year of running her own school and is now opening a new studio in Hogan Street, Tatura. She also teaches at Mooroopna Secondary College in Wannik Dance Academy, a very successful Indigenous program aimed at keeping kids in school. Added to that, as she and her husband have two young children, she certainly must be one very busy lady.

Tanya is ADI Certified (Australian Dance Institute) and her new school offers Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Ballet and Contemporary classes for all ages from three to adult, starting from $9 per 1/2 hour class. Students can take dance exams through Australian Dance Vision, may compete in local dance competitions throughout the year if they wish and there is also the offer of Certificate 1 and 2 in dance that can go towards VCE for years 11 and 12.

Tanya's philosophy is for her students to get exercise, build self confidence and have fun.

They have parents' open day with an end of year concert, where Tanya sews all the costumes herself, 96 of them for last year’s concert!

The new studio will be opening on February 2 and there will be an open day on January 30 with a sausage sizzle on offer, so if you are interested, come along and have a look, meet Tanya and enquire about any classes.

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE Tatura Community House welcomes you all back to another year of activities and participation. We hope you all had a very joyous and healthy Christmas and new year.

We have been closed for the past five weeks and are feeling refreshed and ready to face the year with gusto...well gradually!

Our forward planning for this year has come up with many things, with several of our past activities set to run again: our Art Exhibition/ Buy Swap and Sell – art and craft materials, High Tea, Monster Garage Sale, many pop up events and of course our very big Picket Fence Project which is currently running, plus so much more.

The best way to stay informed is either to keep an eye on our web page, facebook us, phone us, pop in to see us or check out our program and articles in the Bulletin for more details and dates. We are always happy to hear from the people in the community as that is who we are here to service, so just contact us.

If you are already involved in our picket fence project please ensure you have picked up your pickets and paint as we are hoping to wrap it up by end of February. If you are not involved please feel free to call us and we can fill you in on the details and may possibly have a couple of spots left. We vigorously contacted local groups and organisations to be part of this project but if we missed you, we apologise and please let us know.

The painted pickets will “decorate” the Community House and showcase local groups, organisations, clubs, etc. We have titled it “Colour our World”. The unveiling will be an exciting event and we can barely wait to see the finished product.

60 YEARS OF MARRIAGE Cam and Marianne Begg held an ‘At Home’ on Thursday November 20 to celebrate 60 years of marriage. Their children traveled from around Australia to be there for the occasion – Warwick from Woy Woy in NSW, Graham from Perth, Jane from Wangaratta (not so far) and John flew in the next day from Perth. Also present from Mornington Peninsula was Marianne Hodgson, who was named after Marianne Begg. Her mother, Jean Rohead was bridesmaid at the wedding. It was a very happy event and well attended by their Murchison friends.

100 LAP CHALLENGE ON AGAIN FOR 2015 The annual 100 lap challenge will be held at the Tatura swimming pool on Saturday, February 28. This event, which has run for 20 years, raises funds for the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Nursing Home and originated from a bet in the pub about who could swim 100 laps. Over the years the event has evolved to include teams as well as individual swimmers. Several teams from the community, service clubs and families now enter each year along with the stalwart individuals who always swim the 100 laps.

Each swimmer or team is expected to raise a minimum $100 sponsorship. There are no costs involved in staging the event and all funds go directly to the Hospital and Parkvilla. Over the years more than $50,000 has been raised. Recently, funds from this event have provided new beds, new Ventolin pumps, a piano, an oxygen concentrator and refurbishment of the front garden and fencing to improve the amenity for Parkvilla residents. Cam and Marianne received some very impressive and personal congratulatory messages from many dignitaries, all presented in official frames; the Queen’s message included a photograph of the Queen standing in front of a gum tree, a photo specially for Australians. Other official messages came from the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Federal Member for Murray Sharman Stone, Premier of Victoria Denis Napthine and Bishop of Wangaratta John Parkes.

Their partnership is quite a love story! Marianne and Cam first met on a blind date attending the ballet at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne in 1953. They were engaged within six weeks as they were so sure they were meant for each other. Over their lifetime they have worked closely together firstly on an orchard property on the Mornington Peninsula, then dairy farming at Cohuna and in the Murchison district where they have lived for 50 years. They maintain the secret of their long and happy marriage is that it is a true partnership.

Since their retirement from the farm Cam and Marianne have been involved in many different organisations in the town. The Begg family has a long association with Christ Church Murchison where Cam has been a Lay Preacher for 45 years. They have a huge circle of friends and are widely known in the town by all age groups.

As well as four children they have nine grandchildren and are looking forward to become great grandparents.

TATURA LAWN TENNIS CLUB NEWS The club has had a fantastic start to the 2014/2015 summer season. Our eight senior teams have comfortably settled into the Saturday afternoon competition, with our Premier 1 team performing particularly well, holding down top position after winning 7 out of 9 rounds.

Six teams of juniors are competing on Saturday mornings, all thoroughly enjoying their tennis, with our A grade being one of the teams looking like qualifying for a finals place against some tough opposition from around the region.

Our coach David Starling, recently ran a highly successful HotShots program at the club for young beginners. The program ran for six weeks and provided basic tennis instruction, fun games and skill development for 5-10 year olds. Twenty budding tennis stars took part in the program and thoroughly enjoyed it! David is planning to run another Hot Shots program in term one this year – contact David on 0427 004 457 for details and to register your interest.

Some exciting news for the Club is that this year we will once again be co-hosting the Junior Davis and Federation Cups (Oceania Division) along with Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club. Tatura was a very popular venue when the town hosted Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup competition in 2009, with Pat Rafter and Alicia Molik captaining Australia’s junior teams More than 150 competitors, officials and staff from all over the world will converge on the Greater Shepparton area for six days of fierce competition, which will see the top four teams in both the boys’ and girls’ events progress to the world finals at Caja Magica in Madrid, Spain, in late 2015. The event will run from April 8-13, and the community is invited to come along and enjoy viewing some international quality tennis being played on your doorstep.

Pat Rafter Coaching in Tatura Twilight Tennis Competition for five weeks commencing on February 7. The competition will run from 5.30 – 7.00 pm each Friday, and a BBQ and drinks will be available. This is very much a social competition with the emphasis on fun and participation. Bring the kids along!

TATURA MEN’S SHED Men’s Shed members have been busy making and decorating Christmas decorations during November and December. Over 150 plywood reindeers have been made and sold, along with other decorations made to order.

Tom Maher is a retired painter who has been busy using his painting skills. He has a special interest in decorative stenciling which is done free-hand with special brushes.

Elsewhere in the Shed a special Christmas lunch was shared by members and their wives, and a donation of a few bins of cherries has had the wine makers busy with a batch of cherry wine.

The Men’s Shed is looking to update its wood-turning equipment in the  New Year so if anyone has a lathe they are not using and which they would like to donate please contact the Men’s Shed.

The Rotary Club of Tatura has started the New Year with a BBQ at the home of Tony and Janette Mason. A fun social evening and a great way to start the year.

The first six months of the Rotary year have been very busy under the Presidency of Richard Sellway.

The 43rd annual student weekend was held in early October and 18 inbound and outbound students attended from other clubs in the district.

In September, a past exchange student from Austria, Hanna, mad a return visit. She was a guest of the club in 2001-12. A few of our members have visited Hanna and her family in Austria since she was our exchange student three years ago.

The Rotary Club assisted with the running of the Tatura 200 bike ride.

This event is growing every year and helps put Tatura on the map.

The Rotary Club has welcomed two new members; Darlene the local florist who has recently moved to Tatura and Cathy Seymour, a past member and past president, who has rejoined.

The Club has begun organising the 9th Annual Art Show to be held in Tatura on the June long weekend. This year, under the guidance of Rhonda Rose, the Club will again require assistance from the general public, so please consider volunteering.

Tatura Primary School staff and students visited our club in October to accept sponsorship for School Projects and the school Fete.

In February last year, the Club provided partial sponsorship to Steph Dunlop for her study trip to China. She returned later in the year to tell us about her experience.

Naomi Lacy of Murchison was the winner of the Bruce Anderson Scholarship award. Naomi will study Human Services at Bendigo University.

Matthew Snell was another young person the Club assisted. Matthew was one of two Australian students selected to attend the International Youth Science Seminar in Stockholm.

The Tatura Rotary Club meets formally on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday evenings of each month and a social evening is scheduled on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings monthly. The meetings are held at the Tatura Hotel, Hogan Street at 6.30pm.

JUST ONE BITE Heartworm disease is a serious, life threatening disease that can affect both dogs and cats.

‘Heartworm’ is caused by a parasite called Dirofilaria immitus and is spread via a bite from a mosquito. Worms live inside a mosquito for only a short time period, in which the larvae become infective. When dogs are bitten by mosquitoes, the infective larvae enter the blood stream and are able to mature into adult worms, mate and reproduce, all whilst living inside the dog. It takes 6-7 months for larvae to develop into adult heartworms. It sounds nasty, and unfortunately it is!

In recent times most of us have become a little complacent about the seriousness of the heartworm threat for pets that reside only in the Tatura region. We haven't seen any clinical cases of heartworm in many years but that doesn’t mean that heartworm isn’t around. The Zoetis Heartworm Surveillance Program found evidence of heartworm in foxes in both the Benalla and Seymour areas. 34 cases of heartworm were found in Victoria. Heartworm is easily spread from dog to dog (and potentially from fox to dog) via mosquitoes, and we all know there are plenty of those pests over the warmer months of the year. Therefore heartworm prevention is highly recommended for all dogs and cats.

Symptoms of heartworm in dogs can vary, depending on the worm burden. They can range from none to lethargy, coughing, and in severe cases where adult worms are lodged in the arteries of the heart, heart failure and death. Treatment of heartworm in dogs and cats is costly, difficult and carries a high risk of death for your pet. Therefore the emphasis is on prevention, which is affordable and easy.

There are many options from a convenient yearly injection, to monthly tablets, chews or spot-ons. Please feel free to discuss heartworm prevention with one of our small animal vets, to determine the best option for you and your pet.

IT’S COMING SOON… Can you feel it already? That anticipation; that hum beginning to be heard in bedrooms, buses, florists and restaurants across the country: that day in mid February when our world of gender opposites announce undying or new-found desire for the other.

Valentine’s day. Soon to smother many in red adornments of flowers, heartshaped packages and candle-lit evenings, it’s again a time that has recently been re-named by some as a ‘Hallmark Holliday’ given the ever-increasing commercialisation of e-cards being sent each year. But who can blame them?

Love in all its guises, be it toddler to old dear are yet again about to feel the urge. And whether you’ve flipped head-over-heels and need to show it, or you’re someone who is the object of another’s affection, you can’t ignore this annual expression of love.

And so it has been for centuries. In early Rome, when it was considered cool to bump off a few Christians for their beliefs, the emperor Claudius the Second had a rather likable chap called Saint Valentine put to death for that reason. But before he did, he had a brief chat in St. Valentine’s cell trying to talk him out of all that religious stuff because he liked him. Didn’t work of course so it was off with his head or whatever they did in those days. But before that fateful event, St V. called for paper and pen. He had fallen hopelessly in love with his jailer’s daughter whose name is lost in the pages of time. His letter, vowing undying love (which seemed an odd thing to say given his circumstances) was signed, ‘Your Valentine’. What else?

From then on, ‘lovey-dovey’ types have outsourced the need for expression.

In the late-1800’s decorated cards worded with affection began appearing causing a massive run on the postal system of Britain for example, many to become collectable to this day. Later in 1950’s America, someone thought it might be a good idea to design gifts to accompany the lover’s message.

Suddenly re-designed chocolate boxes appeared and presto! Who then could refuse a sweet nibble at an admirer’s expense? But why stop there? What woman in the 1980’s, when they were added to the sender’s expression of desire, could ignore the sparkle of diamonds? When you’re hot you’re hot.

Diamonds are forever aren’t they?

They say Singapore is a country that spends more than the rest of the world on Valentine’s Day, with South Korean woman giving chocolates to the males they fancy. Maybe it’s a weight thing or image, but men there give a rather less sugary gift to their women.

90 YEARS OF

COMMEMORATING A VICTORY Yes! I will be turning 90 years of age on Monday September 14 2015. At least that’s what it states on my foundation stone holding up my massive walls. I remember the day when Senator H. E (Pompey) Elliott pulled the cover off my Foundation Stone and my heartbeat started. I took my first breath and looked out over the Taturian landscape and the massive crowd of people, (my people), who had gathered to witness the event.

Senator Elliott then declared me “rarin” to go.

Well perhaps not quite fully raring to go, but I was able to see all the finishing touches that were being made to me and I must say, without fear of contradiction, that I looked very beautiful. I even heard the Governor General, who flew up to Tatura to officially open my doors on March 26 1926, say I looked very beautiful. That made my heart beat faster.

As commemoration is the reason for my existence, I hear it was only a little over ten years before my first heartbeat that the ANZAC’s (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) stormed the beaches of Gallipoli. While this event accounted for the deaths of more than 10,000 of the ANZAC troops it did not end there. By the end of WWI in 1918 more than 60,000 Aussies gave their lives to protect our country. As you will notice as you walk into my foyer, there is a list 33 names from Tatura who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Just down the road in Tatura’s Mactier Memorial Garden is the commemorative statue of Tatura’s own V.C. winner. Robert Mactier was one of eighteen Victorians who received the highest honour for bravery in battle. So that is why I exist, as a long term, standing memorial, to all the people in the area who sacrificed their lives for their country. That is also why the Committee and ‘Friends of Victory Hall’ work so hard to keep me in good condition; a memorial is not a memorial unless it stands proud in its iconic role forever.

But as well as being a commemorative Hall I do have another role, as a community asset to the town of Tatura and district that has been Tatura’s centre of entertainment for the last 90 years. I hear tell there is going to be big celebrations for my 90th birthday in September. Not sure what they are yet but guess I will need to buy a new dress so I can look as beautiful as I did 90 years ago. You know what ladies are! Even 90 year old ladies need new dresses for big occasions. My dresses do not come cheap and my new dress will probably cost about $20,000, so with the help of my ‘friends’ I will need to start saving up.

Please come and join me for a ‘Cuppa and Chat’ on Friday February 6 at 10.30am and I can tell you all about it. Come along, bring a friend, and see the progress that has been made in my renovations. Come and see the new plumbing infrastructure, the new conference and entertainment centre, and see what I have to offer you. By the way, please have a happy and prosperous New Year.

TAKING A STAND AGAINST VIOLENCE

2015 COOL HEADS PROGRAM

I would like us all to reflect upon our role in reducing violence in our community. Reflect on what part we can play in ending men’s violence against women.

When I ask a primary school aged person who they believe is responsible for dealing with bullying in their school, it is most likely I will be told, “The principal. “Teachers.” “Parents”. We learn from such a young age to be disempowered. Passive. Silent. We need to shift this way of thinking. Kids need to see that they are responsible for their own culture, a culture of respect. Then as adults we cannot remain disempowered; “The Government need to do something.” “The police need to do something.”

“Someone needs to do something.” Passive. Silent.

Let’s conduct a little exercise. Think of a young female in your life who is under 25 years in age, then think of a young male also in your life of the same age. First the young female; picture her with three of her friends together at your place. In Australia right now one of these girls will have violence committed against her - by her partner - in their lifetime.

I am not happy about that!

Now the young man in your life. Picture him with his three best mates.

Some rough maths tells us that one of them is going to be violent towards his partner.

I am not happy about that!

So the question is; what are we going to do about it?

I have a great respect for men that have come from violent homes, who have broken the cycle and have refused to use violence in their lives.

How have they done this? They have had a significant other in their life who has modelled an alternative way of dealing with their negative emotions. Whether this is a teacher, coach or grand-parent, this person has influenced their approach to conflict.

I am therefore asking you to take responsibility for modelling respectful attitudes and behaviours to your two young people. Imagine our community if we all took on this responsibility! Let’s not wait for the government, the police or someone to take this responsibility. Right now we have an epidemic of violence towards women in our community.

We need a fresh approach. We cannot leave it to teachers, or police, or prisons to fix. We need to take responsibility for our community. We need to play our role in modelling respectful attitudes, language and behaviours to our young people.

Start with the easy ones – yes the two young people in your life that you identified earlier and then expand your influence; your workplace, your sporting clubs, your shopping centre, your home… your community. Do it with compassion. Challenge language and attitudes with questions.

Become aware of your own habits and how influential you are in the lives of others. Become part of the authentic solution to this issue.

Feel empowered to influence. When we have equal respect between mten and women; we have no violence.

We ran three successful programs that reminded drivers and our community of the heavy cost of road trauma through risk taking and distraction on our roads. While statistics do not demonstrate the personal grief and pain caused by road trauma, they do indicate significant improvement in driver attitudes on our local roads.

Our first program in 2015, is on March 18 at GoTafe, Shepparton, commencing at 7pm. This will be followed by July 29 at Eastbank Shepparton and November 18 at GoTafe, Shepparton. The recommended audience age is 16 years and older. For further information do not hesitate to contact me.

BEWARE OF THESE SCAMS Fake companies are trying to coerce local people into paying bills that they did not incur and so do not need to pay. These companies pose as sellers of phone listings or some other service then demand payments of over $1000 by posting fake bills and invoices.

“There has been a number of constituents contact my office with suspicious bills and invoices, some are saying that the Federal Government is going to be reimbursing people money. Everyone should always be careful when paying bills or giving out credit card details to unknown companies and if the Federal Government is going to reimburse you for some sort of money they would send you an official letter,” Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said. “One of the fake companies had a phone number in Hong Kong that you had to call before they ‘took legal action’ to have their bills paid. The phone number was false. One scammer used the trusted yellow pages name to masquerade as a legitimate billing company to trick good people in to giving them payments. Everyone should be careful when giving out account details to any companies and be sure you are paying bills that you know are yours. You should also be suspicious when people are claiming they are from the government.

Scammers try to get vulnerable people during this time of the year, trying to prey on people who would welcome an extra bit of income. It can be hard to stop these scammers as they use computers to randomly dial numbers from different locations. THE BUTCHER DANCE

One Man’s Search for Fame…

The story goes that a local writer/songwriter while on a trip to Melbourne chanced upon a conversation while drinking at a pub. Seems someone at the bar claimed to have witnessed a native of New Guinea swear that a relative of his had strayed into an otherwise untouched part of The Highlands and there, had been witness to The Butcher Dance. Now this local lad, (we’ll call him Ned) thought to himself that if this was true and he was able to get a copy of the dance and the tribal song that went with it, he could be on a winner. God knows he needed a break. It had been a very unproductive period recently having sold just one little ditty about a toilet cleaner that left him less than flushed with funds.

Straight away he borrowed money from his dear old mother who had a slight hearing problem. What she heard of Ned’s plan pleased her immensely. Her only son had been on his own too long now and it was heart warming to know he was getting a pet. She wasn’t quite sure why he wanted a Guinea Pig, but gladly handed over the funds plus a bit extra for himself.

Twenty-four hours later, Ned landed in Port Moresby and began looking for a guide. He needed someone who not only had heard of The Butcher Dance, but knew the whereabouts of the reclusive tribe who performed it. He wasn’t having much luck until one morning; sitting at a cocktail bar, he felt a number of sharp prods in his back. The native that stood a little way from him, trying to get his attention, had a reason. He had, how can I put it, a rather long rigged covering over what can best be described as his private area. Despite the large variety of native bird feathers about his person and what looked like a chicken wing in each ear, the chap spoke very good English.

Soon they were in dense jungle, his guide clearing a way through the bush as they sweated and toiled up and up into the canopy of perpetual cloud that covered The Highlands in unspoken mystery.

Then from out of no-where, a number of not-unattractive, near naked young ladies appeared and with secret little giggles to each other, led Ned and his guide into a clearing in their village. Ned was quick to see that this was home to the elusive tribe that performed The Butcher Dance.

Several Not-Unattractive Women when a tall imposing—leader I suppose you would call him, approached Ned with a smile. When he learned what Ned was planning to do, he let out a loud belly laugh. “You’re too late,” he said. “We did that last week and, just for your information, we won’t be performing The Butcher Dance for another seven years!”

Ned sought solace with a number of the not-unattractive young ladies while his guide spent long hours comparing male member coverings with his hosts. But soon they had to leave, promising to return in seven years.

Ned returned to Australia to look after his ailing mother who sadly, never got to meet her son’s pet Guinea Pig. Time passed and Ned re-united with his guide to once again trek to the edge of the known world and to a secretive tribe to witness and record The Butcher Dance.

It was a moonlit night and the tribe had gathered in a circle, each one decorated in a splendid array of feathers and fancy beads; the men also looking splendid in their member covering things. The big guy who Ned remembered was the chief, stepped into the middle of the circle and with a loud clap of his hands, bellowed, “Begin The Butcher Dance!”

Ned switched on his machines as the tribe linked arms and began to sing...

“You butcher left foot in, you butcher left foot out. You butcher left foot in and you shake it all about. You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn around, that’s what it’s all about!”

Interviews with John AT THE CUTTING EDGE

Tony, Josie and Lennie Casuscelli’s has been an unassuming part of the Tatura landscape for over fifty years. The Bulletin’s John Kriesfeld spoke to Tony Casuscelli, his daughter Josie and Lennie Zollo, the current proprietor, to find out more about this resilient business.

The Bulletin: What’s the history behind Casuscelli’s?

Tony: After arriving in Australia from Italy, I was a tailor by trade and worked in Shepparton for nearly six years before coming to Tatura in 1960 to open my own tailoring and menswear shop at 92 Hogan street. In 1971, I began manufacturing workwear and jeans. As the

business grew, we needed a larger premise and moved to our current location in 1974, at one stage employing twenty people.

Josie: I left school when I was sixteen and came straight into the business with dad. After marrying Lennie, we moved down to Melbourne before finally returning in 1994. I’m the sole machinist in charge of the sewing so we’ve scaled back quite a bit since those early days.

The Bulletin: What was the reason for that?

Lennie: Things started slowing down due to the tariff cuts which started flooding the market with cheap imports.

The Bulletin: How much of your clothing is manufactured on site?

Josie: All of our work wear is manufactured here.

Things such as tradesmen’s trousers, overalls, shorts and wash and wear pants. There’s still a demand for these items.

The Bulletin: Are these items only sold in this store?

Lennie: No. There are many shops that like to stock Australian made clothing and our work wear is currently sold in eight other shops around Victoria and NSW. We have a sales rep that travels around and promotes us. There aren’t many Australian clothing manufacturers left so it’s unusual to find one in a small town like Tatura.

The Bulletin: Do you still utilise Tony’s tailoring skills?

Lennie: We have quite a few individual client customers who buy made-to-measure work wear from us. We have their measurements and patterns on record and they come in and see us whenever they require a new garment which is where Tony’s tailoring expertise comes in handy. Also, they might be odd sizes which they can’t get in shops, so they come to us.

The Bulletin: What about the other clothing in your shop?

Lennie: We purchase that stock from wholesale suppliers. If people buy their pants here and they’re a bit long then we hem them for free and there aren’t many shops that do that.

The Bulletin: How do you decide what’s in fashion or what’s going to be in fashion?

Lennie: We have sales reps that come around on a regular basis and show us their range of garments. There are also two major fashion shows held in Melbourne and Sydney twice a year that we attend, along with various fashion expos.

The Bulletin: I was told that at some time in the past you had an employee here who became the fashion designer for Myer.

Josie: That would be Dom Bagnato who’s well known in the fashion industry. He started with my father.

The Bulletin: So Tony taught him everything he knows.

Tony: (Laughs). At the start I taught him. Unfortunately that was around the time I was keen to get out of tailoring and get into manufacturing because I could see the potential but Dom wanted to learn more about the tailoring and design side of things, so he had to go to Melbourne to learn more about the fashion aspect of the business.

The Bulletin: Do you have any plans for the future?

Lennie: We’re happy with the way things are going. Tony has retired and just comes in occasionally to help out with the tailoring, so we have no need to expand. We just want to support the Tatura community and give them the opportunity to shop locally. Our prices are very competitive and our quality is first class.

Tony: We’ve been here a long time so we must be doing something right.

ROMA EWERT Roma Ewert, a Tatura Bowls Club member since 1999, has departed for new surrounds to be near her daughter in Donvale Melbourne. Roma was farewelled at a November midweek bowls game against Mooroopna Golf. Roma, together with husband Wal, since joining the Tatura Bowls club have been great contributors to the club and were heavily involved in many aspects of the club's organisation. Wal, now deceased, was an enthusiastic bowler and contributed to the club immensely. Roma was also heavily involved being a selector, tournament secretary, committee member and a significant fund raiser with her speciality being home made cards at which she excelled. Club members and visitors alike can well remember the magnificent range of home made cards on display in the club rooms with the proceeds going to the club. Both Wal and Roma were quite handy on the bowling green as well with Roma having won the club championship and Club Pairs in 2002 and Wal recognised on a number of achievement boards throughout the Goulburn Valley. Roma, the Tatura Bowls Club will miss you immensely and we hope you enjoy improved health and enjoy being closer to family in your relocation.

Last December, it was ten years since local girl, Zaidee Turner died.

Organ and tissue donations from Zaidee then saved the lives of seven other people. Zaidee’s death inspired her father Allan and mother Kim to form the Foundation which works tirelessly to promote organ donations to save lives.

“Rates of organ donation in Australia are very low; we currently donate at the level of just 16.5 donors per million people. It is important to have a discussion with your family about organ donation. Nearly half of all Australians do not know the donation wishes of their loved ones,” Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said. “1 in 5 people on the current waiting list will die before they receive a life restoring transplant. Last year we had our highest ever rate of organ donors with 391 people who had tragically died whose organs were then donated. These people gave 1,112 other people a chance to live a full life. One organ donor can save the lives of up to ten people and can significantly improve the lives of dozens more through tissue donation. I encourage everyone to have discussions with family in case something unexpected does happen. It is possible that in death, you could save the lives of many people.”

Everybody Has A Story ROSELLA – THE EARLY YEARS

Loretta Hooper I was born in Tatura and I was Loretta Young before I was married. I worked at the textile factory for twelve months after I left school then started working in the tin room at Rosella in 1951. We only made two sizes of tomato soup, the eight ounce and sixteen ounce. There were five girls on the eight ounce line and two of us on the sixteen ounce line.

We would load the empty cans on the line and they would travel to the fillers where they would be filled, sealed and sent to the cookers. It was only a seasonal job at that time which coincided with tomato availability.

Not all of the soup was labelled when it was made, with much of it being bright stacked in the warehouse. A few of us stayed on after the season and over winter and we’d unstack the cans and take them down to the labelling machine to be labelled and then return them to the warehouse.

Unfortunately, the tins of soup that weren’t sold would go rusty and we girls would have to sit around a barrel of water and scrub them clean the following year. There was no used by date in those days and I’m sure we scrubbed the same cans year after year. There were probably a dozen maintenance men working there as well, servicing the machines and getting them ready for the next tomato season. There was also a team of men who would spend the winter repairing and replacing the damaged wooden tomato cases. They did that out in the open for many years, regardless of rain, hail or snow. They’d light a fire with the discarded timber and huddle around that while they worked. Over the weekend, the local children would come in and make large cubby houses out of the wooden cases.

We only made tomato soup during these early years as the tomato sauce and paste was made at Richmond in Melbourne. It was a wonderful place to work back then, a bit like a family really. We used to start getting everything ready in January and if it was a good season then we’d work until May. We had a loyal contingent of seasonal workers who would

return each year after travelling around shearing or working on the sugar cane in Queensland. Safety wasn’t such a concern at that time and these people would work in shorts, singlet and no shoes! It’s a bit different now.

We never had any heating or cooling and the packers, where we worked, were next to the cookers and it was very hot.

The tomatoes would arrive in wooden boxes or cases and the men would unload them and push them along on rollers to the inspection line where they’d be washed and the ladies would pull all the rubbish off. The tomatoes would then go along on a belt into the kitchen where they’d be cooked in large vats and then sent to the fillers. I had to write a docket out by hand for every load that came in so that the grower could be paid.

Later on I was moved into the office and helped out with the payroll which was done by a chap from Melbourne although I eventually looked after everything myself.

Apart from the cans, which came from Gadsdens in Kyabram, everything such as the flour and sugar came in by rail. The railway trucks would pull into a siding next to the warehouse and the men would unload them by hand. The bags of flour and sugar weren’t those little bags you see today so it was very heavy work. They’d pack everything onto pallets and a forklift would then take them away. The railway trucks would then be reloaded by hand with finished product. One of my jobs was to hop on the bike and take all the paperwork to the railway station and have everything signed so the railway trucks could be picked up and taken away. A few days later another lot would arrive and it would start all over again. It was very time consuming work.

A few years after I started, we began to make A10 cans of soup and they had a tendency to blow so we would spend the winter months cleaning all the muck off them. Although the conditions weren’t great, we never complained as we were happy to have a job. I worked with a great bunch of girls so I was fortunate in that regard. We were all friends from the town and had gone to school together. My mum and dad had the café across from Victory Hall and we used to gather there quite often, particularly if there was a dance at the hall.

I remember when Norm and I got married in 1955, he was paid fourteen pounds ($28) a week and I got nine pounds which was a normal wage for that time. However, what helped a lot was the overtime during the tomato season as we used to work very long hours. It was usual for Norm to work a sixteen hour day. Norm started work at Rosella in 1950 and although he did a variety of jobs, his main role was on the sixteen ounce filler during the tomato season.

Norm’s father and my father had a mutual interest in greyhounds so I knew Norm before I started work at Rosella although I never had any inkling that I’d marry him because he was almost seven years older than I. However, something clicked and we went together for five years before we got married.

Magic v Heat – The game started with both teams defending strongly all over the court and neither team could manage to score with numerous shots at goal being attempted.

Tyson Coonerty (Heat) was strong in attack and his persistence paid off with the first goal of the game after three minutes of play. Matt Dodd drove the ball in and scored for Magic but Heat’s players scored a few quick goals to create a small lead. David Palmer and Liam Dodd combined well and when both these players put points on the board for Magic the game score was even. At the half time siren Heat had scored 14 and Magic were 11. With goals hard to come by, it was again Liam Dodd and David Palmer doing all the work for Magic and with accuracy under the ring they managed to create a small buffer and with three minutes left Magic held a five point lead.

Nathan Hall created a turnover and scored and when Tyson Coonerty again hit the target the margin reduced to one. With less than a minute on the clock, again the spotlight was on Heat’s big man and when his free throw shot was good, the scores were level. With a frantic few seconds neither team could convert and at the siren the scores were tied at 23 all. Extra time was needed to decide the winner and Jimmy Boyer was first to score for Heat, followed quickly by Liam Dodd and another quick goal

by Magic put them two points ahead. It was a tense last ten seconds and with the ball in Tyson Coonerty’s hands he shot a long range three point goal to give Heat a thrilling win 28 to Magic 27.

The Godfrey Family Medal was awarded to Tyson Coonerty for his dominance in the game.

A Grade Premiers – Heat Neither side was able to get a big lead in the second quarter with Bulls pegging Heat back every time they threatened to break away.

Bulls used their height advantage inside, getting the ball to McKaybe Barnes and Grady Tyson who scored the bulk of their second half points. Heat guard Dan Hall took advantage of the defensive concentration on Dominicata to drive and score repeatedly. Eventually Bulls started to tire, their defensive pressure lessened, and Heat was able to score more freely, getting out to a seven point lead by the final siren.

B Grade Grand Final: Bulls had made their way to the Grand Final the hard way, finishing fourth at the end of the regular season, and having to win every final game to advance. But from the first whistle they showed that they had confidence and were there to win one more game! Four quick scores saw Bulls up 8-0 early on, before Heat managed to settle and get a score on the board.

Bulls kept to the game plan to double team Heat’s Jalil Dominicata at every chance.

Guards Harry Murdoch, Floyd Vincitorio and Aiden Archer worked to limit his scoring opportunities. In offence they kept the ball moving, resulting in five different scorers for the first half but Heat kept working and never gave up. Despite Bull’s best efforts, Heat’s Dominicata managed to get 14 points, and was well supported by Joel Cook and Dan Hall.

Everybody Has A Story HAVANA HASSLES It was July 2014 and I had just passed through immigration at Havana Airport and headed for the baggage carousel. I had always wanted to visit Cuba before Castro died and experience the Caribbean island that was often in the news in the 1960’s and which had thumbed its nose at its mighty neighbour ever since.

I figured it was only a matter of time before the USA and Cuba kissed and made up and I wanted to see this bastion of Communism before it was corrupted by McDonalds and Coke. While looking for my backpack, I noticed it had been taken off the carousel and put on the floor. As I picked it up, an airport official asked, “Is this your bag sir?”

I nodded. “Come with me please,” he said.

I was wondering why I was being singled out for attention when I remembered the customs form I had filled out on the plane. The form asked if I was carrying guns, ammunition, explosives, knives or sharp objects. I filled in yes, (a pocket knife). Was I carrying drugs, narcotics or hallucinogens? Yes again, (malaria tablets, diarrhoea pills and asthma drugs). Was I carrying electronic equipment requiring satellite communication? Yes, (E-Trex Personal Navigator). The yes boxes made me sound like a drug running, terrorist complete with heroin, ice, guns, grenades and satellite navigation to guide my escape by speedboat across the Gulf of Mexico. So, now I’m sprung! My bag was x-rayed then taken to a desk where a smartly dressed young woman pulled my belongings apart while I stood there, smugly confident that it’s just a misunderstanding.

“It’s a personal navigator used to mark a location such as a hotel so that I can easily find my way back,” I explained. “I used it several years ago when I was in China and took a train from near my hotel to Tiananmen Square and then walked back to my hotel which was about eight kilometres away.”

The young lady was unimpressed. “It is confiscated.”

“What?!” I exclaimed in shocked tones. I flicked through my passport and showed her visas for ‘no nonsense’ countries like China, Iran and Turkmenistan. “I had no sat-nav problems with these countries,” I said.

“It is confiscated,” she repeated.

“Okay,” I said. “It’s your country and I’m just a visitor so you can make whatever rules you like but could I have it back when I leave?”

The young lady conferred with a confederate who said it could be returned when I left, so after filling out a mountain of paperwork, it was locked in a canvas bag for safe storage.

The next eighteen days were spent travelling around Cuba by bus and taxis, including American cars built in the 1950’s and repowered with four cylinder Hyundai engines. It was great fun. The end of my trip came all too soon and I caught a taxi to the airport, arriving at 12.50pm which allowed plenty of time to track down and reclaim my E-Trex before my flight at 4.15pm. However, as the taxi driver plonked my old backpack on the kerb, one of the seams split. Upon entering the terminal, I asked two airport officials if there was any gaffer tape or plastic wrap for sale to repair the backpack but they said no so I hoped the airline check-in counter

might have some tape for such emergencies.

The same officials also told me that I could not collect my E-Trex until I passed through immigration and into the departure lounge.

However, I could not do that until I paid the departure tax and I couldn’t do that until I got a boarding pass and I couldn’t do that until the Aero Mexico check-in counter opened at 2.30pm. Fantastic! I had all this stuff to do but now I had to fool around for an hour and a half before I could even start.

When the Aero Mexico counter finally opened, the attendant told me that they didn’t have any tape and that I couldn’t put the bag on with a split seam. I was directed to go to a nearby hall to get it plastic wrapped. What? Why couldn’t the two airport officials have told me that ages ago when I asked them? Now I’ve got to waste precious time doing something I could have done an hour ago. Lining up again at the Aero Mexico counter, I surrendered the wrapped up bag and was issued with a boarding pass. As Cuban currency (CUC) is useless outside Cuba, I only kept the bare minimum 30 CUC (about $30) to pay the departure tax but as I had spent 8 CUC to pay for the plastic wrapping, I now had to go to the foreign currency desk and change five Euros to make up the shortfall. Finally it was done and I went to the tax office, paid the tax and had my boarding pass stamped.

I now had an hour before my flight left which should have been plenty of time to retrieve my E-Trex. However, the Cuban bureaucracy had other ideas. It took me five minutes to find the correct office, which was both pokey and unmarked. I was asked to sit down while the desk clerk nonchalantly looked at my papers

RODNEY BRANCH then eventually sauntered off between several rows of shelves. After about ten minutes, she returned with a male colleague who informed me that the E-Trex was stored at the Arrivals section of the airport. I barely resisted the temptation to comment on the stupidity of keeping departing passenger’s goods at the arrivals section and said in quiet but frustrated tones, “Could you please go and get it.”

“You will have to come with me,” he replied.

I first dashed off to the departure gate for a final check on my flight and to my horror, was informed it was leaving ten minutes earlier than advertised. I told the boarding gate staff where I was going and they told me that I had fifteen minutes to get back. The customs man and I then rushed to the arrivals area where a man and a woman sat behind a counter looking bored to tears. My escort handed the papers to the woman who stared at them vaguely before handing them to her offsider who shuffled off into the labyrinth of shelving leaving me to pace around counting each passing second. About five minutes later and only one minute and thirteen seconds before the plane doors shut, he came back, without the E-Trex, and said it would cost me 35 CUC to have it returned. I finally lost my cool and demanded to know where my E-Trex was but he just shrugged.

The customs official was on his two-way radio and he told me that my plane was leaving and that I had to go now. I took off for the immigration checkpoint and ran for the boarding gate while the official on the radio told the airline captain that I was less than a minute away. Rushing up the gangway, I was confronted by the shiny exterior of the plane and as I banged on the closed door I thought that perhaps there were worse dramas ahead.

After a long fifteen seconds, the door opened to reveal a smiling air hostess and I staggered in and flopped into my seat, seconds before the plane began to taxi down the runway.

As my heart rate slowed, I could only smile at the thought that after nineteen days of hot, steamy weather, museums, rain forests, tobacco farms, loud music, street parties, dancing, drinking, cigar smoking, magnificent beaches, crumbling buildings and interesting people, the most excitement was had at the airport!

Rodney CWA members hope all readers had a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy start to 2015.

Our Junior and Senior branches enjoyed our Christmas break-up parties and look forward to a busy year ahead. Our members manned a stall at the Christmas Fair and Carols night, and instead of the usual cake/biscuit stall with goodies for sale, our members decided instead to give out packets of three homemade biscuits to the children and adults attending the Carols night. The surprised looks and words of appreciation for being given something for free were very rewarding. Many cookbooks were sold on the stall.

Our first senior branch meeting for the year will be held on Thursday February 12 at 7.30pm at the Senior Citizen’s club rooms. The Competition is Jams (homemade or otherwise, apricot and red jams are very much appreciated) and we will be packing items for the Girl’s care packs for overseas. Any ladies out there wishing to join CWA please give Mandy our Secretary or Pauline our President a call or just come along to one of our meetings, as we have a very interesting and busy year ahead.

Our Junior Branch will be celebrating their 10th Anniversary in February and all past and current members and their parents are encouraged to come along and join in to make this a memorable occasion. As I write this, gentle rain is falling and the urge to plant a native frangipani I have just acquired is almost irresistible. Although it is only January and not the desirable time of March, the air is mild, the ground soft and the young tree well developed and I have a spot that needs a tree of its height to help with wind control as well as to balance the aesthetics. There are a number of good specimens of this tree in Tatura.

Now is a good time to plan the season’s planting even without temptation in your way. The nursery has plenty of well developed plants and a good selection in pots, quite a good option if you are planting early. The Sydney Blue Gums have really taken off and will be looking for a home (they make an excellent woodlot), the wattles could go out early but they have plenty of competition. The red gums are doing well this year after our very poor germination and inability to fill orders last season.

The Commonwealth Government has a large revegetation project just getting underway with the first grants being allotted. We intend to throw our hat into the ring to supply the trees for the winners in our region. It will be interesting to see what varieties and in what quantity they are wanted. As we get more into the planting season I will give details of some of the trees available.

MEL'S TAKE AWAY Most residents call the milk bar on the corner of Hogan and Fraser Streets ‘The Glasshouse’ even though it has been known under many different names over the years. It has recently been taken over by Melinda Uguz and is in the throes of having a significant face lift. Its new name is ‘Mel's Take Away’.

Melinda has always wanted to open her own shop since working in a take away shop in Rushworth at the age of thirteen. "Cooking is my thing. I have always cooked," she told me.

Melinda is married to Aydin (who works as a mechanic at Independent Fuel Supplies with Joe Gagliardi) and they have seven children between the ages of one and sixteen years. Ally, the eldest, is starting her VCE and works part-time at Tatura Hot Bread as well as with her Mum in the new venture. Aydin also helps out when he is home.

During our conversation, Melinda stressed how supportive the town has been on their opening, none more so than the owners, Loretta and Phyllis (from the days of it being Young's Cafe). With a three year lease, Melinda is determined to make a real go of this venture and assures me that they source everything they can from Tatura (bread, milk, lettuce, meat, tomatoes, potatoes, etc) and they make everything as fresh as they can, such as their potato cakes, chips, hamburgers and chicken schnitzel.

Even the fish is battered fresh.

I noticed they have printed on the back of their business card ‘Large business orders, let me know to arrange drop off for free’. They already have standing orders from the Tatura Abbatoirs and Trevaskis Engineering, have tables and chairs to eat in and are planning to have a courtyard outside within the next month. With my own family already having eaten take away from them, we can certainly recommend this establishment.

The current open hours are: 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. - 8.30 p.m.

MURCHISON & DISTRICT SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB Welcome to 2015. I hope everyone had an enjoyable festive season whether with family, friends or just yourselves.

On Monday, February 2, our club will be resuming with a cold luncheon prior to our monthly general meeting. Luncheon starts 12.30 p.m. followed by the meeting approx.

1.40 p.m. As usual, members are requested to supply either a plate of meat, chicken, etc., salads or a dessert as this will assist with catering. Of course you are more than welcome to bring along more than one. It all helps.

We have had a two month recess, so please members make a note of this date on your calendars and in your diaries as we would like to see a really good attendance for our first day back at the club. Of course, like all clubs and organizations, we are always looking for new members, so why not come along and make yourself known to us. If you are attending our luncheon, a plate of goodies would be most welcome.

For members recovering from an illness, or who may be in hospital or not feeling the best, we wish you a speedy recovery and hope we will be seeing you back at the club in the near future.

DHURRINGILE TENNIS CLUB What a year it’s been with the next half of the season being just as busy! The club has seen The ANZ Tennis Hot Shots (ANZTHS) Green, Orange and Red Ball juniors head to Melbourne Park with all juniors showcasing their skills. The Clubs involvement in the 2014 Seniors Festival saw the Club receive two Ground Passes to the Australian Open (AO).

These will be awarded to two lucky tennis Club members. Last year Charlie Murdoch and his mum Helen were fortunate to receive two tickets to the AO. ANZTHS Volunteers and coordinators, Lisa Niglia and Kate Flynn were recognised and acknowledged for their great work and contribution in running ANZTHS Leagues in Terms 4 and 1 for 2014/15. They were invited to attend a breakfast at the MCG and received Ground Passes to the AO. Dhurringile Tennis Club was well represented in the Interregionals held in Creswick near Ballarat. Well done to Lisa Niglia and John Evans who represented the Goulburn valley in the senior division. This is a great representation from

In the local competition Premier 2 sides are yet to score a win but have been very competitive.

The club has given the juniors the opportunity to play at such a high level. Without junior involvement, the future of the club is in doubt.

Greater Goulburn 2 has been successful so far and will hopefully finish in the top 4.

The end of season Christmas Party brought joy and happiness to all. The food was great with the Brisbane Family taking charge of the BBQ. Santa Claus attended to wish the children and community members a safe and prosperous New Year. Congratulations to the Lagozzino family on winning the big Christmas hamper.

MURCHISON RSL RECEIVE ANZAC CENTENARY GRANT As we get closer to the 100th anniversary of ANZAC day, more ANZAC centenary grants are being approved by the Minister for our area. The latest commemorative grant has been given to the Murchison RSL. “The Murchison RSL has been granted $7,230 to go towards the construction of a Memorial Wall to the more than 200 local veterans of the First World War, to be built in the Riverside Gardens at Murchison. This World War 1 memorial will help to ensure that those who served in the Great War from the Murchison area are never forgotten,” Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said. “The ANZAC Centenary Grants Program is a large part of the Australian Government’s commitment in commemorating 100 years since Australian and New Zealander soldiers landed on Gallipoli. The Murray electorate has now received funding for 12 projects to remember those who volunteered for World War 1 around the electorate. Many of these projects are in the smaller country towns who saw the finest of the generation hasten off to join their comrades, even though the reports of terrible losses and injuries were flowing back to Australia. The ANZAC Centenary Grants Program does not glorify war but ensures brave Australians who served, especially those on unknown graves, are named and honoured by all future generations.”

When the doors of the cottages were opened, residents were greeted with the Christmas song, ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’.

Not expecting any giveaways, usually the opposite, the remark was “How much do we owe you”?

The Guides were presented with spare Christmas sweets and one kind resident handed the girls a tin of biscuits for their thoughtful gesture, wishing them a Happy New Year!

As the saying goes, “give a little kindness and it will be returned in many ways”. The Leaders hope their act of kindness will always be remembered by the girls, to give a little and be thankful to receive.

FEBRUARY IN THE GARDEN Are you surviving the Summer heat? Do you even want to be doing gardening this time of year? Once the sizzling summer temperatures hit, it can be difficult keeping plants fresh and healthy, sometimes it's a case of just keeping them alive. So I say MULCH. There are four important reasons to mulch. The first, and probably the most important, is for water conservation. Mulch stops the top of the soil drying out, keeps the soil moist and can reduce watering by up to 60 per cent. Mulching also prevents weeds and weed seed germination which compete with plants for moisture and nutrients. Mulching also keeps the soil temperature constant, and using an organic mulch means you’re adding extra organic matter to the soil. So that's an added benefit.

Mulches can either be organic or inorganic, but I prefer organic mulches because they break down and add organic matter to the soil. This improves soil structure and drainage and encourages earthworm and soil microbial activity. Organic mulches such as straw based mulches are quite common.

Try pea straw, sugar cane or Lucerne type mulches. They can come by the bale although some people prefer to use the chopped product for a neater look.

Bark based mulches are another great organic choice. An advantage of the bark based mulches is they take longer to break down so you don't have to apply them as often. It's best to use medium to coarse grade bark mulches because they don't absorb any moisture and allow rainfall, or irrigation water, to penetrate the soil where it's needed.

Inorganic mulches, including scoria, gravel and stone river pebbles, don’t break down. These come in a range of colours, are trendy at the moment, and can look effective when used as mulch on pot plants. But bear in mind, if using pebbles in the garden, do it where they will not be littered by leaves and other debris, or it may end up looking messy.

What to do in the garden this month...

Put cold climate bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodils, Hyacinths, Crocus into the refrigerator. They can start being chilled from now for at least up to six to eight weeks prior to planting.

Re-pot your Cyclamens into fresh potting mix. Give them a feed with a soluble fertiliser such as Thrive.

Prune summer fruit trees after fruit has been harvested.

Clean up dead flowers. This is called dead-heading. This can encourage new flowering buds to develop. Roses can also be cleaned up and given a feed of rose fertiliser.

A general feed applied to all garden beds will be beneficial as a lot of plant growth can be put out over this month.

Organic Tip - Control chewing pests such as leaf eating Ladybirds, caterpillars, and grasshoppers, with organic certified Pyrethrum.

ANZ HOT SHOTS AT MELBOURNE PARK ANZ Green and Orange Ball Junior Hot Shots from the Tatura and District Tennis Association headed down to Melbourne Park (the home of the Australian Open) on Sunday December 14 to play in the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots (ANZTHS) League State Carnival & Asia-Pacific Tennis League Finals Experience for the first time.

Juniors from Murchison and Dhurringile Tennis Clubs were the only representatives from the Goulburn Valley and the only Victorian country juniors given the opportunity to play in the event. This was a great opportunity for the juniors to play on a tennis surface played on by professionals and to be part of history in the making. There are a lot of talented junior players and it was a great experience for our country kids to meet their urban counterparts. All juniors received a show bag of goodies, a certificate of participation and

some valuable tennis experience. Later the juniors attended the finals of the Asia Pacific Tennis League (ATL) where they watched some top Australian tennis players, including Sam Groth, Omar Jasika and Luke Savile.

Junior coordinator and volunteer, Lisa Niglia, would like to thank all the parents who made the trip to Melbourne Park. Thanks also to Tennis Victoria’s Peter Jenkins (ANZTHS Leagues manager, Tennis Victoria) for giving the junior players from the Dhurringile and Murchison Tennis Clubs the opportunity to experience a State League Carnival and for putting the region on the map. TATURA PROBUS CLUB The November meeting was a very enjoyable one with Jim Nicholl speaking as ‘Member Behind the Badge’ and John Kriesfeld our invited guest.

Jim’s talk, with Margaret his wife of 55 years by his side, was very amusing telling us of his younger days. He went to Harston school and said, “I had two annoying sheilas sitting behind me.” It turned out that one of those girls was Margaret! They have had a very interesting life and have been successful in many aspects of farming. They have two daughters, Sandra and Judi and a son, Vern.

They are proud grandparents of four and were more than thrilled to announce the arrival of their first great grandchild, a boy named Charlie. Thank you Jim you are an entertaining story teller, we hope to hear the continuation of your story later in the year.

John Kriesfeld, the guest speaker, is a published author, an accredited freelance journalist and the popular, well organised and organising President of the Bulletin. John was a teacher for 21 years and also worked at Unilever as Production Planning Manager for a further 21 years. He told us that, “Everyone has a story and also the ability to compose a sentence. Writing comes from within, such as music and art. It is only the desire to write that has to be summoned.” His book Memories to Die For, was published in America due to the difficulty in Australia of publishing an unknown author. John gave a copy of his book to the club. Now the members have tangible evidence of his writing ability!

A Writing Course has been organised by John at the Tatura Community House, watch for details in the Bulletin.

My name is Chloe Wereszczuk and I have had the privilege of being School Captain for 2014.

My name is Bailey Archer and I also have enjoyed the honour of being School Captain this year.

The role of School Captain has allowed me to meet many different people. From chef extraordinaire Curtis Stone to the volunteers of Rotary who support our community, we have welcomed may people to our school. Being School Captain has been an honour I shall remember. I have been able to develop leadership skills that I will use in the future. Being a role model is sometimes a challenge however with support and guidance I feel we have been able to live up to expectations.

So what have we learnt? As Mario Batali once said, “One of the most important leadership lessons is realising you’re not the most important or intelligent person in the room at all times.” Being a leader is not always about being at the front. It is also about letting others take leadership roles and extending themselves. It is about putting others before yourself. Sometimes as School Captains we have had to stop what we are doing and do things for others. For example, helping the junior students, meeting parents and giving them a tour of the school or thanking visitors in front of the school community.

We want to wish next year’s school captains Sarah Wilson and Kelham Tyson, all the best for the 2015 school year. We have no doubt they too will enjoy a fabulous year of leadership and learning. Enjoy the experience.

Finally, on behalf of the Grade 6 class of 2014 we would like to thank all of the teachers who have given us such a wonderful beginning to the rest of our schooling. We thank our parents for all of their support.

G.V. FINS AND FENDERS Goulburn Valley Fins and Fenders Members got together on November 26 at the Tatura Scout Hall for a BBQ and monthly Meeting. Members were encouraged to wear their Club Shirts and bring their Vehicles along for the last meeting of the year!

New Banners have been organised to promote the Tatura Show and Shine Event which is changing to Sunday in 2015. Members hope that the change of day will encourage more families in surrounding communities to attend the Family Friendly Day. The Club hopes that by keeping entry costs down (General Public only Gold Coin Donation) that Families will come along and enjoy a great day out at the Tatura Racecourse.

FLASHBACK – THE THREE STOOGES Who remembers watching the Three Stooges at the pictures on a Saturday afternoon or on the telly during summer holidays? Who remembers the iconic Curly with his “nyuk, nyuk, nyuk”?

Ah, Curly, Larry and Moe, or was that Shemp, Larry and Moe? The trio (starting with Shemp, Moe’s older brother) appeared in their first short film in 1930 and their last in 1969, an incredible span of 39 years.

In 1932 Shemp left to pursue a solo career. He was replaced by his youngest brother Curly.

Some claim that Curly invented break-dancing because in times of stress he would fall to the ground and run in a circle using his shoulder as a pivot. But as early as 1942, the life of a Stooge had begun to take its toll on Curly.

Playing a human punching bag day in, day out for years, enduring constant blows to the head, most of which, according to Moe, were every bit as real as they looked, brought on a series of minor cerebral haemorrhages that slowed him down to the point that he was unable to make personal appearances. Sadly he suffered a debilitating stroke in 1946.

Shemp was asked to re-join the act. He had a successful solo career and was reluctant, but eventually agreed rather than see the demise of the Three Stooges and the careers of his brother Moe and old friend Larry. Shemp died of a heart attack at age 60 in 1955.

The third Stooge was Shemp for the first two years, Curly for the next fourteen years, Shemp for the following eleven years then Joe for one year and finally Curly-Joe for the last eleven years. Larry and Moe were Stooges from start to finish. Overall the team appeared in 220 films.

Today the Three Stooges remain wildly popular with audiences. Their films have been consistently on the television airwaves since first appearing in 1958, and they continue to delight old fans while attracting new legions

We are very fortunate to have such a well equipped Hospital and Nursing Home here in Tatura with a very committed and capable staff but there will always be a need to purchase additional items for both facilities to help keep up the very high standards for the residents.

PETER’S PONDERINGS It has been a little more casual time for me over these past few weeks. This has allowed me to be in a few different places and be a little more observant of what has been happening around me. This has probably been enabled by a few extra café visits and the opportunity to sit over a coffee observing the passing parade of people. I would really like to find out the stories behind these many people: why they are in this space, what they are feeling, what they would normally be doing, who they are with, what they would prefer to be doing, and so much more.

If my coffee lasts long enough, it’s not hard for me to start constructing stories of my own. It can be fun to take a lead from some superficial feature that I have observed and develop some answers to the questions that have passed through my mind. If there was the opportunity to test it out, I expect that my life experience would lead me to some conclusions that are quite accurate but many others would be wildly wrong. One thing that would be working against me is the different types of ‘masks’ we wear for various reasons. These ‘masks’ can present us as someone who we are not and that can be a decoy for the casual watcher of the passing parade like me.

I am so thankful for a loving creator God who knows all about me, sees through my pretence and still loves me, still wants to guide and care for me. Some lyrics from the English singer-songwriter Matt Redman ring true for me: “When … all is stripped away and I simply come, … You (God) search much deeper within, through the way things appear, You're looking into my heart. King of endless worth, no one could express how much You deserve.

Though I'm weak and poor, all I have is Yours, every single breath!”

Behind the way things appear to the casual observer, there is a heart in us that is designed to worship our creator God and His son Jesus – that is a magnificent purpose for our life.

TOOLAMBA UNITING CHURCH ADULT FELLOWSHIP The Toolamba Uniting Church Adult Fellowship is a small but active group with seven members. Meetings are held monthly at a variety of locations including the Tatura and Toolamba churches and member’s homes during the winter months. Members share devotions and congregation folk who are not well are visited and upheld with prayer. Many different activities have been enjoyed including singing, videos, shared stories and poems and a mystery trip.

In May, our meeting enjoyed a visit from local artist, Val Rokhar, and in September, the guest speaker for our ‘Mission Day’ was Nita Kirby, who spoke of and demonstrated her sand play therapy.

We have continued to support ‘Outback Frontier Services – Tennant Barkly Patrol’, and have allocated donations of $250 to Frontier Services Uniting Care and The Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Fellowship has been enjoyed with members of other Tatura churches at their functions, fetes and World Day of Prayer. We finished the year off on a high note with a Christmas treat luncheon at the Gallery Café and look forward to another happy year of fun, fellowship and service in 2015.

LAMINGTON CUPCAKES INGREDIENTS       

200g butter, softened 1 ½ cups caster sugar 4 eggs ¾ cup desiccated coconut 2 ¼ cups plain flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 tablespoon vanilla 1. essence

ICING

¾ cup milk  2 cups icing sugar

 2 tablespoons cocoa  1 ½ cups desiccated coconut

METHOD

Preheat oven to 180°C. Place cupcake papers in 2 x 12-hole muffin trays.

Cream butter with an electric mixer, for 2-3 minutes.

Add sugar one third at a time, beating well between each addition.

Add eggs one at a time, beating for about a minute between each addition.

Add the vanilla essence and coconut, beat until combined. Sift flour and baking powder and add half to butter mixture with half the milk, beat until combined. Repeat with remaining flour and milk.

Spoon mixture into cupcake papers until 3/4 full. Bake for about 15 minutes until a skewer inserted into the middle of a cupcake comes out clean. Transfer to wire racks - cool completely.

Icing - sift icing sugar and cocoa into a bowl, add warm water to make a spreadable paste. Place coconut in a small bowl. Ice cupcake and dip 1. in coconut.
