WITH KERRY… by Damien Lewis

Judy, a beautiful liver and white English pointer, and the only official animal POW of World War Two, truly was a dog in a million. Whether she was dragging men to safety from the wreckage of a torpedoed ship, or scavenging food for the starving inmates of a hellish Japanese POW camp, her unbreakable spirit brought inspiration and hope to men living through the twentieth century’s darkest days. Her incredible story is based on the testimonies of the last few veterans who knew her. I must admit, I prefer dogs over cats, but with this book your preference doesn’t matter. If you love your animals, you will enjoy this book. It was absolutely extraordinary how Judy survived WWII and also saved many men at the mercy of the Japanese army. Be warned, you will need the tissue box handy. - Kerry Gardner

DECORATED LETTERBOXES FOR CHRISTMAS Toolamba Lions Club held a competition during December for the best decorated letterbox and it was amazing to see the creativity of so many people who entered. Some entries stood out a mile and others were less obvious but also interesting when looked at closely. Cardboard tubes were used to make legs and arms, a covered football for a head, an old red tee shirt was turned into a Santa outfit, while native greenery and wires were made into different artistic shapes. There were so many different creative ideas and a great deal of work done by many Toolamba residents. First prize was awarded to Donna Griffith, second to Stacey Hodgkisson and third to Nat and Rachel Knee. Well done to all who entered. - Janice Dreyer

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE The Tatura Fire Brigade Competition Team is a great starting point for those aged 11+ who are interested in the world of firefighting. This sport is used to both gain and further firefighting skills for current and future volunteers. Many of our brigade members began their journey with the competition team and followed through to become volunteer firefighters. With this being said, competition runners do not have to become firefighters. It is a fantastic low-cost community sport where everyone is supported by the competition community.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle

When I last sat at the cafe with Agnes, she shocked me with the statement, “I have left Fred.” Well, I simply had no words in response to that, I mean after all they are Fragnes! We promptly packed up Agnes and her many silly bags and went back to my house. I needed a quiet space for sorting through what might be going on. No matter how many times I asked her what was happening, she just kept telling me she needed a few days away and could she please stay with me. After several futile attempts to get her to talk, I went off and made up the spare bedroom. I thought Agnes may have offered to do this seeing as she was the one wanting to stay with me but she just sat on the couch looking like a rabbit in the headlights, almost impossible to move. I made up the bed, put out fresh towels and went back to give it another go with an aching back for my troubles. “Now what on earth is going on Agnes?” I asked sternly. “I will simply not take silence as an answer.” Agnes started to cry. Oh gawd I hate it when she cries. She’s quite the slobberer and loud too. Not to mention the strange faces she pulls, however, as her friend I sat through all of that patiently and kindly. When she eventually regained her composure after what seemed an agonizingly long time, I said, “Well let me tell you more about my new job Agnes. I’m sure you’d like to hear all about that if you’re not up to telling your story just yet.” “Fred is having an affair!” Agnes burst out abruptly, spitting tears and goodness knows what else in my direction. I had to duck for cover before quickly mopping it up with my hanky. I was really hoping I did not catch anything. “An affair Agnes?” I wanted to say that sounded impossible, I mean who would want Fred? But I wasn’t sure how to say it politely. “Yes, and I found him out Merle. It’s all too awful,” sobbed Agnes. I patted her comfortingly on the shoulder. “You had best start at the beginning Agnes, and for goodness sakes, who with?” Agnes looked up at me, fire suddenly in her eyes. “Betsy, that damned awful Betsy Brathelwaight.” I must admit. I was even more surprised. “Betsy the baker? But she is so much younger than Fred, Agnes,” I said, trying not to pull a face but thinking

to myself he would have been very lucky to get someone even his own age. He has weathered poorly the old Fred. I could not imagine a young woman, or anyone in fact, being attracted to him, particularly someone like Betsy Brathelwaight who was still an attractive woman. “So how did you find out about it all?” I asked curiously. Agnes often muddled things up and I was not sure she had all of her facts right with this one. “Did you find them in a compromising situation?” I asked as I attempted to conceal a grimace as a fleeting image of Fred crossed my mind. “Let me start at the beginning Merle,” Agnes stuttered. She sniffed and wiped at the mess on her face. “About three weeks ago I came home and I could smell a woman’s perfume in the house. It was one I don’t wear so I asked Fred if he had a visitor but he flatly said no and not to be silly. Then he got a phone call a few days later and ran out the door saying he forgot something at the supermarket but he came home empty handed an hour later.” I shook my head. “Oh Agnes, this certainly is not sounding right at all.” I thought I would have been delighted to finally be rid of Fred and secure my friendship back with Agnes but I realised how terribly upset she was and how much she clearly loves that old guy. I felt funny in the tummy for her. “Merle, it gets worse,” continued Agnes. I was driving down West Street a few days after the supermarket episode and saw Fred go into Betsy’s house. “How do you know where Betsy lives? And why were you driving down West Street?” I asked tilting my head to one side. Agnes fidgeted with her hanky and said, “Well, Malcolm from the hardware shop said that Betsy and Fred had just been in and he thought perhaps they had forgotten something which was why I was there. This was becoming quite confusing. “Why were you at the hardware shop Agnes?” I asked. Agnes suddenly looked a bit sheepish. “I um, um, well I was looking for a little camera to hide in the house if you must know.” It was my turn to splutter. “Agnes, what on earth have you become?” Agnes glared at me fiercely. “If he is lying to me and is having an affair with that beastly Betsy then I wanted proof.” “I would say going into Betsy’s house was proof enough, wouldn’t you? I mean we both know she has a reputation for husband stealing.” Agnes started to cry all over again. “I did not know about her reputation Merle, oh no.” Agnes sobbed and spluttered and moaned. “Oh, I thought everyone knew, Agnes. It’s common knowledge around town.” I patted her on the arm again like the good friend that I am. “There, there, let me get you a nice cup of tea.” I raced off to the kitchen as fast as I could. Why are people so emotional? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

GV Tree Group Christmas Breakup

Presentation

Welcome to 2022. We are hoping to finally have an uninterrupted season. At our Christmas dinner, flowers were presented to two of our longest serving volunteers who are semi-retiring (they both hope to pop in when their health allows them). Congratulations Betty Harvey and Yvonne Harper for the decades of service to the GVTG. Our seedlings are growing well with the majority pricked out now. We did lose a few small trays of seedlings due to a watering malfunction before Christmas, highlighting the importance of vigilance with the care of seedlings. This brings us to watering natives over

Presentation

GV TREE GROUP summer. You’ve done the hard work planting your tube stock so a little water over summer will help protect your investment. Trees in their first two years will do best with frequent watering, hopefully via rainfall. Watering every one to two weeks will promote good root growth allowing a faster establishment. As trees become established most natives will survive without regular watering however a good watering every one or two months should keep them in good condition. Many native trees are drought tolerant, this means they have adapted to be able to survive very dry conditions, it doesn’t mean they thrive in dry conditions. Adding a good dose of water occasionally will not only help them survive

but set them up to grow through dry spells. Overwatering can be a problem with many natives. Natives should not be watered in the same manner as exotics. Established natives do not do well in soil continually waterlogged. Allowing the soil to dry out in between waterings will not harm established natives. A little extra care now will set your trees up for some great growth during winter and spring. Thanks to everyone returning used tubes. If anyone has tubes at home, we would appreciate you dropping them at the nursery (over the fence in the returns crate) while we wait for our order to arrive. - Good growing, Ash

HARSTON CWA Welcome to 2022. I still hear people saying on New Year’s Eve, good riddance to 2021, as it was a terrible year dealing with Covid lockdowns. Here we are now with more active cases than we ever thought possible. Still we need to be positive and learn to live with Covid. The Harston members enjoyed a Christmas lunch back in December at Lagozzino’s hotel. Mrs. Glenys Eberle, President of the Branch, presented CWA Service certificates and Badges to four members. Mrs. Mary McGrath received her 30-year Certificate, Mrs. Merle Krause received her 20-year Certificate after transferring to Harston from the Tatura branch. Mrs. Josie Watson having transferred from Kyabram, received her 10-year Certificate as did Mrs. Judy Hussey. Judy was absent due to ill health. Every member well is loved and

respected in our branch. Judy may not return to Harston, but she can look at her Service Certificate and badge with pride. January is our time out from meetings as its time spent with family, as often most are away on holidays, maybe not this year, still were only a phone call away. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 14th. It’s Valentine’s Day! Meetings are held at the Tatura Bowls club rooms at 10.30am, and morning tea is supplied. A reminder: the CWA Goulburn Valley West Group will hold their Annual AGM and Group Conference later in February at the Harston hall, the date is yet to be announced. The State representative is Mrs. Sarah Barnbrook, Magazines and Communications chairman. - Mrs. Marilyn Pell, Harston

A large group of spectators witnessed Peter LeSueur take out his third Tatura Bowls Club's Men's Singles Championship when he defeated Darrell Whitley in the championship final. LeSueur had previously won the club's most prestigious event in 2011 and 2013. To reach the final both LeSueur and Whitley had to overcome bowlers who had all been winners in past years of the club's Men's Singles Championship. To meet in the final, Peter LeSueur defeated John Crilly and Nick Boyd and Darrell Whitley defeated Josh LeSueur and Jason Carter, the current GVBD Champion of Champions. Peter and Darrell put up a fine show of lawn bowling with LeSueur being more consistent and establishing an early lead which he maintained until the conclusion. LeSueur 25 to 16 defeated Darrell Whitley. Club events are progressing slowly and bowling members are encouraged to complete their games asap and if possible before the scheduled date. - John Crilly

From small things As it’s been over a month since the last episode, I thought I would briefly refresh your memory. Kevin Ramsbottom refused to pay 50c library fine as a matter of principle, was then rude to the sheriff when he came to collect the fine, and even ruder to the judge who then charged him with contempt of court. Episode 4 – A Slippery Slope Kylie visited me while I was sitting forlornly in the holding cell, wondering what I’d done to be treated so unfairly. The thought that I was now as one with heroes such as Mandela and Gandhi who had also been jailed for upholding their principles had cheered me up momentarily as I was escorted out of the courtroom but my mood had quickly deflated as the reality of my situation had sunk in. I attempted a brave smile. “Hello Kylie. Thanks for standing up for me in the courtroom. It means a lot to me.” Kylie sniffed back a tear. “Why did you have to be so pig-headed towards that judge? He would have let you off if you simply paid the fine.” I shook my head. “We’ve been through this before Kylie. You can’t compromise your principles.” “That’s just it,” replied Kylie. “That’s why I stood up in the courtroom. I was going to explain everything to the judge but he wouldn’t let me.” “Explain what Kylie?” She looked downcast and bit her lower lip. “Do you promise you won’t be angry with me?” “Angry with you? Whatever for?” She looked up and said very quickly. “The book was mine. I borrowed it using your library card.” I was stunned. “You borrowed it?” “Yes,” she said simply. “But why didn’t you tell me? We could have

S10A% OLFFE

avoided all this trouble.” “Because you never told me the name of the book,” she wailed as her tears once more began to flow. I didn’t know what to say as my links with Mandela and Gandhi abruptly disappeared. “Then the library was right all along,” I said softly. “I did owe the fine.” “Yes,” replied Kylie as she wiped her hand across her face, “and on Monday, you will apologise to that nice judge with every sincere fibre of your body.” A burly policeman strode into the cell block and informed me in clipped, neutral tones, that my chariot awaited and as Kylie sadly waved good-bye to me, I was escorted into the back of a white paddy-wagon and driven to the correction centre. The police handed me over to a prison guard who consulted his paperwork and then asked me if I was Kevin Henry Ramsbottom and I replied that I was. He grinned, “With a name like that I’d stay away from Big Jack if I was you.” “What do you mean?” I asked rather timidly. I was finding the whole experience very intimidating. “I don’t think you want to know,” he replied. I was issued with prison clothing and then the guard escorted me across a compound to an adjoining cell block. We passed several cells with inmates either sprawled lazily on their beds, sitting at their small tables or simply standing, staring vacantly out through the open door. “This is your new home,” said the guard as he ushered me into a cell occupied by two elderly prisoners. “Your new friends are Doug and Billy and they’re both in here for murder, so don’t upset them.” He turned to the men. “This one’s only in for a couple of days, so look after

by John Kriesfeld him and show him the ropes. His name’s Kevin Ramsbottom,” he said with a grin and then walked off chuckling to himself. “I’m Doug and this is Billy,” said one of the men. “What did you do that’s only worth a couple of days?” I didn’t think I should mention the fifty cent library fine. “I was in court on a minor matter but the judge took a dislike to me when I stood up for my principles and decided to punish me with a couple of days in prison. It’s discrimination, that’s what it is.” “Bloody judges,” snarled Billy, “they’re all the same.” Doug looked at me curiously. “Discrimination you say. Let’s see, you’re white, male, AngloSaxon and probably a Christian, is that right?” I nodded. “Lapsed, but I believe in the Christian philosophy.” “So where’s the basis for discrimination?” asked Doug. “You’re too tall to have a Napoleon complex, and you’re clearly not a ranga.” “A what?” I asked. “A ranga, a ginger,” explained Doug. “Are your parents divorced or separated?” I shook my head. “Are you homosexual, bisexual, transgender or confused?” continued Doug who was clearly having fun. I continued to shake my head. “What about mentally handicapped or physically disabled?” he asked. “No,” I replied, “none of them.” “Were you a refugee or raised in poverty?” asked Billy, and once again, I shook my head. “Have you ever been abused?” added Doug. “Only when I was umpiring junior football,” I said. “Does that count?” “I’m afraid not,” replied Doug. “What about a left-hander?” threw in Billy

Having come this far I knew I had no alternative but to reluctantly explain the whole story although I omitted Kylie’s confession as it made me look even worse. Doug laughed loudly when I finished. “I knew the world was going crazy and now you’ve confirmed it.” He put his arm around my shoulder and spoke to me as if talking to a child. “Just apologise to the judge, Kevin. What you’re fighting for is not a principle. Life, liberty and equality; they’re principles. You’ve got your knickers in a knot over a simple clerical error. You said that you weren’t mentally impaired but these aren’t the actions of a sane person.” “I think that’s because you’ve had life too easy,” observed Billy. “You don’t know what’s important and what’s not. You sound like you’re one of these perpetually outraged folk who send emails and letters on behalf of the allegedly down-trodden but rarely get off their fat backsides to actually do anything about it.” “But I did stand up for myself,” I replied. “And you’re to be commended for that,” replied Doug, “but you chose the wrong battle.” Just then a bell rang throughout the cell block and thankfully brought our discussion to a halt. “It’s shower time,” said Doug. He pointed towards one of the bottom bunks. “Your towel’s on the end of your bed.” “That’s okay, I had a shower this morning,” I replied. The last place I wanted to be was in the showers with a bunch of hardened criminals. “Like everything else in this place, you don’t

get a choice,” said Billy. “Now stick with us, don’t talk to anybody, avoid making eye contact either at eye level or lower down, if you get my drift, and you’ll be okay.” The shower block was freezing cold and the water was barely tepid. I decided to be in and out as quickly as I could but I had barely started to lather my body when a large shadow fell across me. I looked up quickly to see a giant of a man grinning down at me. Every inch of his body was covered in tattoos and, although I didn’t look that closely, it seemed that there were tattoos on his tattoos. He must have spent his entire time behind bars working out in the gym as his huge muscles looked as if they were about to burst through his skin. He also appeared to be without a neck as his head simply disappeared into his shoulders. He was a very frightening man. “What do we have here?” he asked in a voice that was surprisingly high. Doug immediately came to my rescue. “He’s nobody Jack. Kevin’s just passing through. He’s of no interest to you.” The giant, who I realised was Big Jack, turned and snarled at Doug. “I wasn’t talking to you Dog’s Breath. I was talking to Sweet Cheeks here.” He turned back to me, held out his hand and allowed the soap he was holding to fall to the floor. “Oh dear,” he said in his high-pitched voice, “I do believe I’ve dropped my soap. Be a nice fellow and pick it up for me.” There are a few things that are hard-wired into every adult male’s brain and one of them is, if you find yourself in jail then you never, under any circumstances, pick up the soap when you are in the showers, so I stood my ground. “You dropped it, so you pick it up,” I replied as manfully as I could, happy that my voice didn’t come out in a squeak, then pushed the soap backs towards him with my foot. However, Big Jack was already moving towards me, and not seeing the movement with my foot, inadvertently stepped on the soap. His foot immediately shot out from under him,

and with his huge arms flailing desperately, crashed heavily to the ground. The back of his head smacked against the concrete floor with a resounding, dull thud and he then lay there motionless, not even twitching. “My God, you’ve killed him,” gasped Doug as he stared at Big Jack’s inert body. “But it was an accident,” I gasped. “I didn’t even touch him.” “You’ll be lucky to get manslaughter,” continued Doug. “It’ll be second degree murder for sure.” Before I could reply, a bevy of shouting guards burst into the shower block and ordered everybody to get dressed. Where were they when I was being harassed by Big Jack? As I hurriedly dried myself, I watched nervously as a team of medics fussed over Big Jack’s body, and thought to myself, surely I’ve reached rock bottom now. It can’t get any worse than this. However, fate simply handed me a pick-axe and told me to dig.

THE 12 LAWS OF KARMA – No. 5 to 7 If you haven’t read laws 1 to 4 then you need to search out the December copy of the Bulletin and read that first. Here is a brief summary for the rest of you with short memories or who partook in too much Christmas cheer. The word ‘karma’ translates as ‘actions’ and includes our thoughts, words and deeds. Everything is energy, including our thoughts and emotions. It is our thoughts that control our lives. Our thoughts become words which in turn lead to actions. Our actions become habits and our habits define our character. Everything we do creates a corresponding energy that comes back to us in some form, hence the old saying, ‘What goes around, comes around’. It is important to understand that the laws of karma refer to cause and effect and not reward and punishment. So, to help you on your spiritual journey, here are the next four Laws of Karma. 5. The Law of Responsibility. Our lives are of our own doing, nothing else. Our reality is a continuous reflection of our state of mind. When you notice commotion and turmoil around you, you have to take responsibility for the situation you find yourself in. We mirror what surrounds us, and what surrounds us mirrors us. Although this is often not easy, engage in deep inner reflection and try to pursue peace. We are responsible for how we show up in the world, how we allow others to treat us, and how we treat other people. Even when something bad happens, don’t mull over it. Learn the lessons and take responsibility for making things better. It is only when you take responsibility for all your thoughts and actions that you can develop a sense of control in your life which is necessary to push yourself forward. 6. The Law of Connection. The law of connection states that everything and every person is connected in some way. Everything you do is connected; every step is important. The smallest or seemingly least important of things must be done because everything in the Universe is connected. Each step leads to the next step, and so forth and so on. Neither the first step nor the last are of greater significance. They are both needed to accomplish the task. No single step will suddenly shoot into the future of your dreams. Your past, present and future are connected. Your future is a culmination of your previous choices and steps. Make an effort to take steps that are consistent with your destination as only in that way can you get there. 7. The Law of Focus. We cannot think of two things at the same time. If we focus on the positives, then there is no room for negativity. If our focus is on spiritual values, it is not possible for us to have lower thoughts like greed or anger. The Law of Focus helps to place your attention on those values that will primarily assist you in attaining the heights that you seek. When you form the habit of recognising the lessons in negative events, you learn from these experiences and get even better. - John Kriesfeld

TATURA UNITING CHURCH It’s not about the fish.

Through a combination of prior planning and neglect I’ve discovered that I have fish in my dam. Not just fish, but many, sizable Silver Perch. It must have been about four years ago I bought a bag of 100 fingerlings at the Epsom Field Days. I released them into the irrigation dam at the back of my house and promptly forgot about them. I did look for them in the first few weeks after their release, but there was too much water and too few, too small fish. I assumed that they had either died or had become food for the numerous water birds that paddle around the dam or dive in from the overhanging branches of the large eucalypt on the bank. I’d like to claim that it was patience that let me stop constantly checking and fretting about the fate of my fingerlings, but the truth is I moved on to other things and they were forgotten until a friend who was installing a solar pump and working near the dam asked me, “Do you have fish in that dam?” as he had heard some irregular splashing, which to his more informed ear sounded like fish breaching the surface. This aroused my curiosity and I decided to look more closely and even throw in some small pieces of bread. Nothing happened the first day, but I did notice that the bread had disappeared a few hours later. I tried again and this time sat with a cup of coffee and waited. Within a few minutes I began to hear the sound of fish breaking the surface of the water as they snatched at the little pieces of floating bread. And so began a daily ritual of feeding the fish. A few minutes of quietness and reflection at the beginning and end of the day. It’s been good for me. I hope it has been good for the fish. I think they have come to expect it, because now they appear within seconds to get their bit of wholegrain. As Covid restrictions have eased and friends and family have started to visit again, it’s become a joy to share the wonder with them. Adults and grandchildren alike smile and delight in seeing the fish emerge briefly from the depths of the dam to snatch a piece of bread then quickly disappear back into the deeper water.

As I feed them, I try not to think of them as food. I’d like to appreciate the fish for just being fish. But it’s hard because even though I’ve never been a fisherman, I have been conditioned to see any animal that is not a pet as food. It’s not helped by most people describing them as ‘pan-sized’ in response to other’s questions about how big they are. But I’m trying and the joy that my grandchildren get from seeing wild fish feeding in Grandpa’s dam is probably more than I’d get from catching and eating them. For now at least… The very first person that Jesus called to be his disciple was Simon the fisherman. Having borrowed Simon’s boat to use as a floating pulpit, Jesus suggests that they pull out into deeper water and do a bit of fishing. Simon is reluctant initially as he has worked unsuccessfully all night and now everything is washed and packed up. ‘Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.’. When they do this, they catch “so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink.” (Luke 5: 1-10). It’s a great story, but the kicker is that having caught the elusive fish, Simon realises that it’s not fish that he is after. He is seeking something more from life and he sees enough of this in the person and teaching of Jesus to leave his boat and nets and follow Jesus on a journey that would define his life and change the world. Henry Thoreau wrote, "Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after." If we truly reflect on the gifts we gave and received over Christmas, I’m sure we’ll find that it’s not really the gift that we were after, but to share joy and love and hope, and deepen our relationships with family and community. This is the gospel, and it’s good news. - Brian Spencer, Minister, Tatura Uniting Church

THE HISTORY OF TOOLAMBA HALL The Toolamba Public Hall was erected in 1893 on what is now the corner of Pogue and Downer roads, about six kilometres from the present township. It was for nearly forty years the only public hall. The locality chosen could well have been linked to a closer settlement scheme for that area at the time. The scheme didn’t really take off but the hall was well patronized during its lifetime. People used to recall that it had the best dance floor for miles around. Concerts, socials and meetings were common, and church services used to be held there for some years. There were also two tennis courts attached and the local team won the Tatura and District Pennant flag in 1931. The weatherboard hall burnt down on November 18, 1938 when an open fireplace used at a function the previous night is thought to be responsible for the catastrophe. By the mid 1920’s, moves were afoot to build a hall in the township. Progress was slow but eventually in May 1932, a hall, a memorial to those who served in The Great War, was opened. In 1949 a new pedestrian entrance in front of the hall featuring a gate between two solid brick posts became a Second World War memorial. The chair of the hall committee was Mr Jack Cross. One of the early functions in the new hall was Mr and Mrs Cross’s 25th wedding anniversary. A huge occasion involving the hall and its surroundings was the ‘Back to Toolamba’ weekend in 1983 when it was filled with an enormous display of historic Toolamba memorabilia. By the 1980’s the Shire of Rodney was favourably disposed toward the modernisation of public amenities including halls. A new Community Hall was built in Toolamba in 1985 at which time the Memorial Hall was demolished. A feature of local fundraising on this occasion was the sale of suitably embossed bricks at $250 each featuring the donor’s name. An interior wall in the foyer displays these bricks. The cost of the centre was $184,000 of which $36,000 was raised locally. In addition, most of the new centre’s furnishings were provided from the old hall funds. The three halls have served Toolamba for almost 130 years. - Brian Williams

Ted and Ruth McCracken

VALE RUTH MCCRACKEN Ruth was born at the Tongala Bush Nursing Hospital on April 9, 1928 to Harold and Doris Davis. They were farmers. When she was eight years old the family moved to Tatura and she and her brother, John, attended the Tatura State School. When she was twelve she sat for her merit exam and went to Sacred Heart Tatura. When she turned fifteen she left school and obtained employment at Flanagan’s Store. Sometime after that she met her future husband, Ted, in the Victory Hall at the pictures and they became engaged. When they reached the ages of 17½ and 21, they were married. This was the first dressed wedding after the war finished in 1945. Almost the whole town went to see them. Mrs Moore catered for the wedding - guess where? In the Victory Hall. Sandwiches, cake and trifle was the normal menu for those days. They were blessed with four children, two boys and two girls, but the boys Eddie and David died at sixteen from Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic disease. Later they adopted two baby boys, Stephen and Andrew, who were adored by their big sisters, Penny and Chris. Throughout her life, Ruth sang at weddings, concerts and in the church choir. At forty years of age, Ruth joined Turaton and was to remain with them for nearly forty years, appearing in such shows as Mikado, De Fleadermous, Show Boat and Fiddler on the Roof, as well as many other shows and concerts. She also joined four ladies from Turaton and with Geoff Cable as pianist, sang as Flair for twelve years. She also worked for the Church Guild, the Football Club and of course the Mothers Club and Tatura Tennis Club. It was a busy life with much help from Ted and the girls. Ruth had a very happy marriage with Ted and they had lots of parties and celebrations. Ted was the only love of Ruth’s life and they did everything together, even both becoming Citizens of the Year, at different times of course.

WALKING THE DOG

Hello all! This time around I thought we could talk a little about walking the dog. Everyone loves the idea of getting Fido out and about and taking a nice casual stroll. The problem is that it doesn’t always work out that way. All too often, the nice casual walk looks more like a war between two species. Human being dragged, arms being pulled out of their sockets, canine being choked to the point of coughing, hacking, puffing and panting. Yep. A lovely walk. So, what can we do about it? There is an absolute myriad of ways to let Fido know what is expected of him. What works for one dog, may not work for another. I will talk about one way you can try that I find very effective, but the most important ingredient in the recipe of teaching you dog how to walk well on a lead is learning why Fido is pulling to the point of choking in the first place. One of the most common reasons is excitement. Getting out in the world with all the sights and new smells, remember that dogs “see” with their noses. If you are taking Fido out once or twice a week for a walk, don’t expect them to behave as you would like. The moment they step off your property, their senses are bombarded with information. Who has walked past, when, did they have a dog with them, was it male, female, puppy, sick, healthy, dangerous, did they “mark” what Fido considers his territory? They know who is cooking and what just up the street, where the butcher is, if there is a cat close by and the list goes on and on. Put yourself in a similar, human, position. You are hosting a kid’s party. There are thirty odd kids all yelling, laughing, crying, jumping in the pool, climbing the play equipment, vying for your attention, wanting stuff. The music is pumping, you are trying to watch all of them at once and someone behind you is saying “please look at me, I have something important to say.” How is that working out for you? Well, unless you are accustomed to situations like that and can keep calm, I can pretty much guess that the person behind you is not going to get your full attention! Why on earth would you expect more from your dog? So here is one recipe for a nice walk. The ingredients you will need are as follows. Time. It may take a long time to get out of your door and down the road. Make sure you aren’t on a tight schedule. The right equipment. A lead that is comfortable in your hand. That isn’t too thin, thick and burn or hurt you if the dog pulls. My go to is a good leather lead. Whatever works for you. A good collar, halter or harness that won’t hurt the dog. I prefer a harness. Collars can do damage to a dog’s neck and or throat. Especially correction chains. While they can be effective, they require skill to be used properly without causing discomfort or possibly serious injury to the dog. They are not for a novice handler. OPTIONAL. Food reward. Using food is a skill all of its own. It must not be used as a bribe to do the right thing. ONLY to be given AFTER the dog has exhibited desired behaviour. Otherwise, you may be starting a whole other issue. If you are not sure on how and when to use it, go without. A good walk and praise will be reward enough. Now we are ready to help them control their emotions. The learning session begins as soon as the dog sees the lead or harness. If he starts to jump about and carry on, stop! Stand up straight, bring your hands in close to your body and just stand there until the dog notices that nothing is going on and stops. In that second, praise him gently and quietly. Begin putting equipment on the dog. The second the dog starts jumping about, stop and stand up again. Wait till the dog calms, praise quietly and begin again. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, how many times you need to do it. DON’T lose your patience. Don’t forget to praise gently and quietly. If you are feeling frustration or anger, believe me, even if you think you are hiding it, the dog knows it. If you can’t be calm, how do you expect your dog to be? Next, we head for the door. Again, we can expect excitement. Stop. Stand up straight, arms close to your body, I generally cross them on my torso, and wait. The dog calms, praise, proceed. Repeat. You all getting the picture? Nothing happens unless the dog is calm. The door or gate is opened. Again, wait till the dog is calm before going through. This process is repeated with every step of getting out of the home. You can use the word “wait” or “stay.” This is all going to take a bit of time. The more often you do it, the faster and more smoothly the process will become. Once a day is ok two or three times

a day is great. Ok, so now we are on the street. The dog lunges to the end of the lead. The process is repeated. Stop, stand up straight, hands close to body, wait, gentle praise. Take a step forward. Here is the important bit about the walk. The millisecond that lead tightens, stop! Do it all over again. Dogs are, by nature, opportunists. If Fido gets two or three steps in while pulling, it’s worth him trying again. You are on your way to a good walk! A few very important things to remember. It’s going to take time and patience! Two steps forward, one step back is a good rule to apply. Let’s face it. Think of the most difficult things you have learnt in your life. How many times did you have to do it before you got it right? How many times did you have to be reminded how to do it right? How many times did you fail? You are asking you dog to do stuff that is completely unnatural to him. Don’t expect him to learn it faster than you could. A baby takes 2-3 years to be toilet trained…. think about that. Also, just like us, dogs have good and bad days. They even get headaches, body aches etc, just like us but they can’t tell us. During your walk, remember to allow him times where he can just go where he wants and sniff. He just can’t pull to get there. It’s his walk. He needs his nose to see. Just like us, he has needs too. It’s a little give and take. The dog isn’t our slave. It’s our friend and companion! BE PATIENT! Also, joining your local Dog Obedience Club goes a long way in helping your dog to be calmer. Hug your fur friends for me. - Marie

TATURA PROBUS CLUB We had a good finish to 2021 with a meeting in November, where we had a very interesting talk from Lyn Harrison on our local Museum, and then a very successful Christmas function in early December with lovely food and lots of socializing. We are not sure how this year will be, but we are starting off positively with a luncheon at the Pizza Restaurant in Mooroopna on January 20. The Committee has decided to put off any Trips for the next month or two, but we will have another luncheon in February. Meanwhile our next meeting is on January 27, hopefully at the Community House as usual, with a 10 a.m. start. - Wendy Wilson

Fair Dinkum! Are we the lucky country or not? In the 1960’s acclaimed author Donald Horne described Australia as the lucky country, but he did it very much tongue in cheek rather suggesting were we in fact the/a lucky country. Well since those days, the term has been used a fair bit, particularly by politicians and media journalists. However, I cannot help but see that we are indeed a lucky country and never more so than in the last twelve months. Now that may seem strange considering that we have had a drought many have said is the worst this country has seen, we have seen terrible bushfires ravage our country and leave untold misery as a result, and now we have the Corona Virus halting life as we once knew it. So how can we say we areJason a lucky country? and Kirsten Well, suddenly rain began to come when least expected and that has been followed up by some wonderful sustaining rain to fill dams, create sub-soil moisture so that crops can be sown. Even the once dead Darling River is flowing again! And the rain has put an end to possible continuing bushfires. Yet there is still so much misery so again, why are we a lucky country? Because we have men and women who have a spirit within them that makes us so proud of who we are. I am talking about the SES, Rural Fire Brigades…all of those who went day through night to help keep bushfires under control and who did so with some losing their own homes, and so many putting themselves in harm’s way. I am talking about the convoy truckies who day through night and drove countless kilometres to take hay bales to farmers really struggling. I am talking about the unsung, unseen heroes who went out of their way New Year's Eve and KFC to drive to properties doing it tough with supplies of food and needed essentials. And now we have the virus and we are seeing Australians learn to turn their business into helping others. And now we are seeing health professionals and those who work daily in our hospitals putting themselves at risk because it is their job and the same can be said for those at airports, particularly those processing incoming passengers from overseas. We are seeing what friendship, mateship and dedication is all about on a grand scale. Yes, we are a lucky country in the true sense. Finally let’s all still remember those who have gone in the drought, the bushfires and this virus. Surely remembering makes us want to ensure they are not forgotten by doing what we can to keep Australia the lucky country.

REBOOT YOUR MOJO POSTPONED Unfortunately, due to the current Covid climate, we have temporarily postponed the Reboot Your Mojo event. We are very grateful to the total community support enabling us to connect and reconnect locals with the wonderful sporting, volunteering and wellbeing opportunities right here in Tatura. Locals can see what is on offer in the community and also come down to enjoy a free BBQ and live music. So far we have 23 stallholders from a range of local sporting, community and wellbeing organisations. The event has also attracted support and sponsorship from local businesses and groups, without whom the event would not go ahead. Special mention to Unilever, Generations, Hill Top Golf Club, Primary Care Connect, Greater Shepparton City Council, Tatura Hot Bread, Hotwire Mobile Auto Electrics, Tatura Foodworks, Ritchies IGA, Lions Club and The Bulletin. At the end of January, we hope to set a new date (hopefully not too far away). We will be changing over the posters and marketing next week, when we return to the office. Thank you for your understanding. - Reboot Your Mojo Committee

French Onion Puff Pastry Bites

FRENCH ONION PUFF PASTRY BITES These elegant looking appetizers are easy to make and very popular. Ingredients: 3 tablespoons Butter 1 tablespoon Olive Oil 2 brown Onions, halved and sliced 1 tablespoon chopped Thyme or Oregano 1 teaspoon Dijon Mustard 1 teaspoon cracked Black Pepper 1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt, (plus more for topping) A pinch of Sugar 3 tablespoons Chicken Stock Frozen Puff Pastry sheets, thawed Shredded Gruyere or Tasty Cheese Directions: Heat butter and olive oil in saucepan on medium until melted. Add sliced onions, stir to coat and cook, undisturbed, until they begin to soften. Add herbs, mustard, pepper, salt and sugar, stir to combine and cook, covered, stirring every 4 minutes, until onions begin to brown and break down. Add chicken stock to pan. Cook, stirring constantly to loosen browned bits from the bottom of pan, until liquid evaporates. Spoon dollops of onion filling on pastry sheet, leaving gaps between each. Top each spoonful of filling with a pinch of cheese. Carefully place another sheet of pastry on top, gently pressing around the onion and cheese filling to seal. Cut between each and use a fork to press edges to seal in filling. Place on baking sheet, lightly brush each with egg and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake at 190 degrees for 15 minutes. - Janice Dreyer

8-9. Smarty Pants. An excellent result because there were a couple of tricky questions this month although luck probably played a part. You are probably the cream of the crop because I’m not sure that anybody got these all correct. 10. Genius. All ten correct? Really? You should either buy a Tattslotto ticket while your luck is still in or you really are a certified genius.

THE TATURA MUSEUM

Arts Showcase: On a wild and windy Wednesday afternoon, December 8, Sacred Heart celebrated the Arts with a showcase spectacular. Throughout the school, numerous works of art were on full display including plasticine portraits, sculptures, paintings and collages. Grades 1 and 2 hosted a small exhibition with big features - magical castles with magnificent themes. From underwater kingdoms, frozen and pink palaces to Louise Nevelson inspired assemblages that towered in black, gold and white motifs; it was a sight to see.

Tatura Museum was recently visited by Mr Tom Wolf and his wife Sandra. Tom has completed a model of the HMT Dunera, having spent seven years creating this 1:350 scale model from the original plans of the sister ship Dilwara, which was identical to the Dunera and had detailed plans available. The HMT (Hired Military Transport), Dunera was launched in 1937 in Glasgow, and was being used to transport internees from Great Britain to Australia early in World War Two. Because of horrendous overloading and a bad class of warders, the trip to Australia turned into a hellish nightmare for most of the prisoners. Tom built the model in loving memory of all Dunera Boys and in particular, his Father-inlaw Alfred Felix Katz, and Eric Strauss, his wife’s brother- in-law.

As 2022 nudges closer and the build of our Art Centre commences, fingers and toes will be crossed in anticipation for next year's showcase with an added guest list of parents, family and friends to enjoy in the spoils of our spectacular Arts showcase. - Matt Hooper, Art Teacher and Rock Band Leader The Choir: Congratulations to our choir who sang so beautifully at our end of year performance. Students from Grade 3-6 who are passionate about singing, have the opportunity to be a part of our choir, meeting weekly to sing together and prepare for special performances.

COOMBS ROAD

The Evening Birds Concert: The Evening Birds completed the showcase, erupting with ear-splitting jams, face-melting guitar solos and earth-shattering rhythms. Dillmac Concert: What a 'rock'n way to finish the school year! Beautiful Summer morning weather greeted us as we all gathered in the SUDOKU No. to67and support our Dillmac quadrangle to listen students who performed at our annual Dillmac End of Year Concert. Students from Years 2 to 6 who have weathered a challenging couple of years of onsite and online music lessons with tutors from Dillmac Entertainment Music School, all blew us away with their songs. Each student chose their favourite song to perform and showed everyone not only how talented they all are, but also how much time and effort they've put into regular practising.

We shifted to the end of Coombs Road 7 1/2 years ago. When people heard where we had bought, we heard that it used to be called ‘Mad Lane’. In years gone by, Mr. Coombs owned the land and ran a dairy farm and piggery. Next door to us is the original Coombs Home, which has been extended and modernised over the years. Our house is apparently built on the site of the rotary dairy. The first part of Coombs Road, which is a dead-end road, is commercial, but once you drive over the bridge there are lovely old and newer homes, on large blocks of land, all very well cared for. There is a mix of retirees and young families. The first house on the left over the bridge featured in the local papers many years

Sacred Heart has a very strong Music and Performing Arts program and many of these students are working hard towards their goal of performing in the school rock band The Evening Birds in years to come. There are a couple of lanes leading off Coombs Road to reach houses that have built on subdivisions, and there have been two new homes built to the south of us since we shifted here. Nigro Court also runs off Coombs Road. The Mosquito Drain runs along the back of our property, and there is farm land on the other side of that which is subject to flooding, so will never be built on. All in all, it’s a lovely place to live. - David and Wendy Wilson

MAKE EVERY DROP COUNT THIS SUMMER

SUDOKU No. 67

Goulburn Valley Water is urging residents to make every drop of water count this summer. While climate forecasting is suggesting a wetter than normal summer due to the influence of La Nina, temperatures are still forecast to be above median in north-central Victoria during January to March.

6 8

People can make sure every drop of water they use counts by following the Permanent Water Saving Rules, which includes watering the garden between 6pm and 10am, using a blower or a broom to clean hard surfaces, and use a bucket and a leak-free hose fitted with a trigger nozzle to wash vehicles. “People in the Goulburn Valley showed some excellent water saving behaviours during the Millennium Drought – now is the time to reintroduce your greywater system and other water saving measures,” Dr Capewell said. “Simple things around the home can save hundreds of litres per day. Cutting your shower down to four minutes can save 40 litres a day and turning the tap off while you brush your teeth will help save 10 litres a minute.” People can find more information and tips and tricks to save water, including information on the Victorian Government’s Target Your Water Use program at gvwater.vic.gov.au/ everydropcounts - Jenna Bishop

Summer water usage peaked in January 2021, with more than 3,710 megalitres used by GVW customers, compared to 3,147 ML in January 2020.

We’re asking people to be conscious of where they’re using water and look at how they can reduce that. There are plenty of options to reduce water use that won’t impact your lifestyle, but can easily save bucket loads. Check for leaks and fix dripping taps, use a pool cover to reduce evaporation, turn the tap off while you’re brushing your teeth and catch water in a basin while washing vegetables – there are plenty of ways you can make a difference.”

5 4

Permanent Water Saving Rules are in place across the state, and residents are being urged to be water wise and consider how much water they’re using around the home.

Goulburn Valley Water Managing Director Steve Capewell said it was everyone’s responsibility to use water wisely and sustainably. “Our climate is changing and we can’t rely on rainfall like in the past, so we need everyone to adopt an ‘every drop counts’ approach to using water,” Dr Capewell said. “If everyone takes action to reduce their water usage and make little changes around the household, the water savings will add up. Together, we can make a difference. With the changing climatic conditions we’re experiencing in Northern Victoria, water conservation is more important than ever and we all have a role to play to ensure its sustainability for future generations.

ROTARY CLUB TATURA

‘We Love Local’ - What a great logo. ‘We’ is plural, ‘Love’ is what we have for Tatura and ‘Local’ means our community. Wearing masks cannot stop the smile on the people’s faces you see walking down the street. It may hide the smile but you only need to look people in the eye and you can see their smile. This town has to be one of the most friendly towns in Victoria. People often say that is the reason they moved here, they ‘Love’ this town. The ‘O’ in Love says it all, it’s a circle. The old saying, “What goes around comes around”. The more love we give the more we receive. The ‘O’ in Local is a circle too. The more we support local businesses the more local businesses support our town. Once again what goes around comes around. There is even an ‘O’, in the word Rotary. Rotary is renowned for being the most trusted organization in the world today. The Rotary Club of Tatura has been raising funds for many years in this town

and 95% of the funds raised go back into our Local community, completing the circle. Rotary contributes to many worldwide projects as well, and just to name one, ‘Polio Plus’, helping to rid our world of that disease. ‘Oh’ I almost forgot what this article is about. The Rotary club of Tatura would like to thank Foodworks for their significant donation to our club in 2021. This money will assist the club to continue providing support for many rotary projects in this town. The people of Tatura have always been very generous in their support of Rotary. The Rotary Club of Tatura will be launching a new initiative involving the corporate sector in 2022. It will provide us with a boost and ensure that we remain a leading service club in this town. We look forward to the corporate businesses joining with Rotary to support our town. Remember, pick up the phone. Rotary is only a phone call away. - Bill Purcell, Rotary Past-President

NO ONE’S UNSINKABLE To all those Unsinkable Guys out there – You might think it’s safe to have a few drinks around water, skip the lifejacket when you’re out on the boat or go for a swim without checking the conditions. But statistics prove that 4 out of 5 drownings are men. Just remember that no one’s unsinkable.

UNSINKABLE GUY

RETHINK

TAKING RISKS AROUND WATER

A single ember can spread bushfires as far as 30km. Burning embers from bushfires can travel up to 30km, starting new fires in seconds, destroying homes and making escape impossible. If the Fire Danger Rating is ever extreme or above, don’t hesitate. Leave early.
