NYE GREAT GATSBY GALA EVENT What a night and what a huge success! 180 people attended the evening dressed up in the Great Gatsby theme. All money raised will go to Moyola, our local aged care facility. Thanks must be made to the generosity of the members of the Dhurringile Tennis Club and organisers of the great event. It was such an entertaining evening that even some of the dairy farmers in attendance almost lasted the distance till midnight. Great Scott almost did. Thanks to City of Greater Shepparton for their Small Events Grant as $1000 was given to the club to help contribute to the New Year’s Eve Great Gatsby Dairy Farmers Community Gala Dance Event. Thanks to all our sponsors.

Specials mention to Gerry and Amelia Vecchio In-Style Dance for all their amazing decorations, sourcing out prizes and the wonderful team of helpers. ADVERTISING UPDATE The Bulletin is run as a not for profit publication where all costs incurred in producing the 11 issues each year are covered mainly by advertising together with some donations from local organisations. The cost of producing the Bulletin averages $6,600 per issue so it is important that accounts are paid promptly so we can pay our accounts. Whilst the majority of our advertisers understand this and settle their accounts quickly we do have some who don’t. We have a policy that if an account remains unpaid for 60 days or more then no further advertising will be accepted until the account is paid in full. We also have a policy of asking new advertisers to pay in advance for their first ad as, unfortunately, we have been left with unpaid accounts in a few cases. Our bank details are included on our invoices and we ask that anyone making a direct deposit includes the invoice number and/or their name as a reference. This makes it easier for us to work out who has made the payment.

100 LAP CHALLENGE ON AGAIN On Saturday February 24, the annual 100 lap challenge will be held at the Tatura swimming pool. The event has run for 23 years and originated from a bet in the pub about who could swim 100 laps. The event raises funds for the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Nursing Home.

Over the years the event has evolved to include teams as well as individual swimmers. Several teams from the community, service clubs and families now enter each year along with the stalwart individuals who always swim the 100 laps. Each swimmer or team is expected to raise a minimum $100 sponsorship. There are no costs involved in staging the event and all funds go directly to the Hospital and Parkvilla.

Over the years $62,000 has been raised. Recent funds from this event have provided new beds, new Ventolin pumps, a piano, an oxygen concentrator, bladder scanner and refurbishment of the front garden and fencing to improve the amenity for Parkvilla residents. This year the proceeds will go towards bed replacement.

‘THE EAST’ AT MURCHISON Paul and Emilia Golding, who run the Royal Mail Hotel in Nagambie, are already making a difference since purchasing the Railway Hotel at Murchison East. The new events held there have been going well with many plans for the future. Their son, Mitch, is currently running ‘The East’ with any major decisions made by the three of them. Mitch has been establishing a good rapport with local residents and is keen to make a success of the new venture.

They plan to offer regular live music on weekends and in the long term expect to hold something special at least once a month.

The next major event is for St. Patrick's Day on March 17, which will be a big backyard shindig, with Tim Richards launching his Australian tour from that platform and a new up and coming band waiting to be confirmed.

Meals were available seven days a week during the holiday season although these have now been cut back to five. There is an option of opening if bookings are around ten or more, so keep that in mind for any special occasions.

The $10 lunch specials from Wednesday to Friday have been very popular. Though advertising to employ locals, they have mainly been rotating staff from the Nagambie venue, with Emelia working there at most of their busy times. All the employees are casual and it is obvious they like working in the pleasant environment where they are encouraged to approach management with any concerns, either large or small. Being aware that the food is very important, they particularly want feedback from their customers, asking them to let staff know if something is not good. It will always be fixed.

Paul, Emilia and Mitch Golding zoo occasionally". He plans for them to build up the business, with a vision of making it a destination place. He even said one of the goals is to have their venue on postcards one day. "Yes, it is hard work. Yes, we get tired.

Yes, we get worn out but we love what we are doing and (without being a smarty pants) I think we are reasonably good at it."

They haven't had an easy start to get things up and running properly but certainly present a show of family friendly warm hospitality.

Paul had always been hankering for a country pub and found the timing just right when the Railway Hotel became available. He and Emilia have been together for eighteen years after meeting when they both worked in the Caravan industry. They have two daughters and two sons, with the whole family working together and supporting each other.

and spending time as a family and with the grandchildren. With such busy work lives there isn't a lot of time off but they usually have three breaks a year of four or five days, when they go to Melbourne, stay at a hotel there and do a tremendous amount of walking, finding new arcades and alleyways to explore.

No matter how often they go, they always find something they never knew existed.

Paul told me they want to be in charge of their own destination and have a vision of how they want their business to be. He said they have wonderful staff and with the three of them involved in the running of the business, they are well on the way. He said, "To quote a well-used cliché, if you build it they will come.

That is what we are doing and will just have to wait to see. We have done it at Nagambie and plan to do it at The East."

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS

2017 was a great year for the Tatura Historical Society highlighted by the influx of new volunteers and the terrific contribution they made to the Museum operations. At this time last year, it was hard to envisage how we would be able to continue to open seven days per week. Thankfully that is not the case now and although we have sufficient volunteers we would certainly welcome more.

Happy New Year to all! We look forward to another busy and productive year ahead with something for everyone. You can check out our new program in this issue of The Bulletin.

Additional significant events last year included the great achievement of having our war time camps collection recognised for its significance by Heritage Victoria, the unveiling of the duplicate Arandora Star Monument by the Dunera Association and our very successful open day at Phyl Mactiers home ‘Nithsdale’.

Looking forward into 2018 we can expect another great year. We will celebrate 30 years since a group of masochists decided to inflict pain upon themselves by opening a museum. I doubt they realized the size of the task but when I look at our top-class collection and displays exhibited today I must take my hat off to them. Quite a few of our ‘originals’ are still actively at the museum and form a solid foundation of our team.

We confidently expect that with ongoing support from the Greater Shepparton City Council we will make giant strides towards achieving our long awaited building extension. Added to this is our intention to have six murals installed in the alcoves on the outer wall of the museum depicting various historical aspects of Tatura’s past including of course the POW and Internment Camps.

I take the opportunity to wish you all a very happy and healthy new year and please remember you are always a welcome visitor at the Tatura Museum which is open from 1.00pm to 3.00pm on weekdays and 2.00pm to 4.00pm on weekends and public holidays.

New Coffee Hub: In the last half of 2017, Tom Boocock and his students worked very hard on transforming our kitchenette area into a funky Coffee Hub, where we will be hosting Barista training and offering coffee to visitors to the Community House. We have had many contributors to Phase One of the project including the Lions Club who secured a $3000 grant from the John Wallis Foundation for us. With this money, we have purchased a commercial coffee machine and grinder, furniture and accessories. The talented crew from Tatura Men’s Shed have built an amazing bar out of recycled harrows and timber and many thanks to the Generations Op Shop for donating some wonderful retro chairs and table. The Tatura Commonwealth Bank branch are donating labour and $500 towards the Coffee Hub, so in early 2018 we will see them roll their sleeves up and give us a hand.

Tatura Rotary donated $1000 to the Community House to help us finish off our new reception area and we are hoping to have a little left over to put towards the Hub. Tom will try to attract some more funds so we can finish off the flooring, new bench and splashback, plumbing and window furnishings.

A big thankyou to Verena, Darlene, Daniel, Tammy and Tom who have done an amazing job coordinating the project. The community is invited to come down on Thursday, March 1 at 12.30 to celebrate their work and have a free cuppa and watch a Barista demonstration.

Our Annual Progressive Dinner: This is on Wednesday, March 21 with only 25 seats available. Entrée will be at One4One Café, Tatura Hotel for the main meal and the Victoria Hotel for dessert. This is a fun social night and a great opportunity to meet new people. The cost is $50 per person, with payment required on booking.

So, we have quite a social start to the year and look forward to catching up with old friends and making new ones.

CHRISTMAS IN THE BUSH Christmas in the Whroo forest was the setting for the Rushworth Prospecting Club, where members and friends gathered to celebrate the festive occasion.

There were over 40 people in attendance with many taking the opportunity to camp for a longer period in their caravans, motor home or camper trailer.

Some international visiting member guests found the Aussie Christmas bush theme a most memorable event. Caravans were displaying flashing lights and the marquee was well lit with Christmas decorations. A competition for best dressed table created a competitiveness amongst many members who sought the prestigious honour and prize of ‘Best Dressed Christmas table’. Irena Crilly from Tatura used her canine dogs Molly and Jandi in her Christmas table theme in an attempt to influence the judging panel but it was all to no avail.

The club provided the meat for the BBQ and the members presented a wonderful variety of salads and sweets more suited to a five-star dining restaurant in a top class restaurant. It was a wonderful night and great fellowship was had by all.

Over the period of the camp at Whroo, some members ventured into the scrub with their detectors searching for the elusive gold but most had minimal or no success. However, it may well be just the next sweep of the detector and Eureka!

BRAIN WAVES Part 1 by John Kriesfeld James Peabody groaned as he studied the list of names on the clubhouse wall. He turned to Wally, his golfing partner, “We’ve drawn that pain in the posterior, Sam Waffleton. So much for having a relaxing afternoon.”

“His playing partner Sid is okay though,” replied Wally. “He just goes about his game quietly.”

“I’d be quiet too if Waffleton was my partner,” replied James. “That man never has anything nice to say.”

“Speak of the devil,” muttered Wally as a squat, portly man appeared around the corner of the clubhouse.

“There you are Peabody,” roared the man loudly. “Are you ready for a damned good thrashing?”

“Hello Sam,” replied James politely, refusing to be intimidated by Waffleton’s aggressive energy.

“Sid’s waiting at the tee,” said Waffleton loudly. “I thought we could spice up the game a little by playing for five dollars per hole.

What do you say? Are you man enough for a little side bet?”

“That’s a bit weak isn’t it?” replied James, already annoyed by Waffleon’s brash manner.

“I was thinking of ten dollars per hole, although if that’s a bit rich for you then I suppose we can do it your way.”

“Not at all old chap,” said Waffleton as he strode off towards the tee. “I can do with a bit of extra beer money.”

“Ten dollars?” said Wally softly, clearly worried by the size of the bet.

“Don’t worry Wally,” replied James. “You’re better than Sid, and I’ll cover Waffleton. We’re the ones who’ll end up with the beer money.”

Unfortunately, James’ optimism was unwarranted. Waffleton’s abrasive behaviour annoyed him to such a degree that he was unable to relax and he scrubbed his first tee shot into the bushes on the left of the fairway and things went downhill from there. However, Wally was playing well enough to carry them both and at the end of the first nine holes they had only conceded thirty dollars.

“I think it’s time you took up bowls old chap,” laughed Waffleton as James hooked yet another tee shot into the trees. “You remind me of Tarzan,” he shouted derisively as James trudged off to try and find his ball. “You swing from tree to tree.”

“Don’t let him get to you,” said Wally as he caught up with James. “He’s just trying to put you off your game.”

“Well he’s doing a damned good job then, isn’t he,” replied James angrily. “What I wouldn’t do to start smacking a couple down the middle just to take that stupid, supercilious sneer off his stupid face.”

“If you just relax and ignore him then I’m sure it will happen,” said Wally soothingly.

However, three holes later and a further thirty dollars behind, Wally tugged his tee shot into the scrub on the left where it rolled under a large bush, making it virtually unplayable.

“The pressure’s on you now Peabody,” said Waffleton loudly as James stepped up to the tee. “Your partner can’t save you on this hole.

Come on, let’s see what you’re made of.”

James took a deep breath and addressed the ball calmly as he willed himself to hit it up the middle. “You can do this,” he muttered to himself and then took a mighty swing. He hit the ball with all of his pent-up anger but as it rose majestically off the tee, it swung in a long arc to the right and eventually ended up under a large gum tree.

“You won’t be able to reach the green from there,” guffawed Waffleton gleefully. “I could probably retire a wealthy man if I played against you every week.”

Fuming angrily, James strode away from the gloating man. He wanted to see if he had a chance at making the green. Waffleton, who’s ball was well up the fairway, hurried after him.

“You’ve got no chance,” he said loudly once they saw the lie of the ball. “You’ll have to chip it out sideways. That’s another ten dollars for Sid and me. This is like taking candy off a baby.”

However, James had seen a small opening between two gum trees. “If I make it through there,” he thought, “I should finish up on the green.”

“You can’t be serious,” laughed Waffleton loudly once he realised what James was about to attempt. “Even Greg Norman wouldn’t be able to hit it through that gap.”

James offered up a silent prayer as he stood over his ball. Surely the golfing gods also hated Waffleton. He took one final look at the small opening and then swung his club. The club’s connection with the ball was perfect.

The sweet smack that he heard as he hit the ball was music to his ears and ball shot off the ground, gun-barrel straight, hammered noisily into the large trunk of the gum tree and, with an equally loud smack, hit James right between the eyes as it rebounded off the tree, knocking him off his feet and onto his back.

Wally rushed over to the prone figure. “James, are you okay?”

“Of course he’s okay,” replied Waffleton.

“Don’t you think you can get out of our bet by playing dead. If only I had the sense to film this on my phone I’d have made a fortune on Youtube. Are you going to try it again?” he asked hopefully as James struggled to his feet, a bump the size of an egg already starting to appear on his forehead.

“No,” he replied slowly. “You can have this hole.”

“Shouldn’t you pack it in?” asked Wally. “That was a decent blow to your head.”

“No,” replied James determinedly, even though he now had a thumping head-ache. “There’s only three holes to go so we’ll finish it.”

As he teed off at the sixteenth hole, his ball once again began to veer to the right and as always, he willed it to straighten up and land on the fairway. However, unlike every other time in his life, this time the ball obeyed him.

His next shot looked as though it was going to land short of the green and once again he willed it to find a few more metres and once

THE CUBBY OCCASIONAL CARE again, his ball obeyed him. He closed his eyes for a moment to try and clear his head. Surely his ball wasn’t obeying him? However, it was the same with his putt. The ball, which was heading left, took a slight turn and landed in the cup after James, like every other golfer in the world, willed it to go in the hole.

“About time you started to play well,” said Wally as he patted James on the back.

James didn’t reply. He just looked thoughtful.

After a moment he turned to Waffleton. “We’re sixty dollars behind. How ‘bout we call it double or nothing on the next hole?”

Waffleton snorted. “You’re on. One good hole and you have delusions of adequacy.”

To James’ pleasure, the ball still seemed to obey him after he hit it off the tee and then, as a new thought occurred to him, he managed to will Waffleton’s ball into the trees. After that, the hole was an easy win and the slate had been wiped clean.

James wasn’t sure what was happening, he just knew that something was happening. The final hole was a short par three and as they walked up to the tee he stopped and stood in front of Waffleton. “I bet you one hundred dollars that I can hit a hole-in-one.”

“What?” said Waffleton. “You can’t be serious.”

“I’m serious,” replied James. “Are you man enough to take the bet?”

“Man enough?” replied Waffleton. “I’ll give you ten to one. My thousand dollars against your hundred. That blow to the head must have addled your brains.”

“It’s addled something,” thought James as he placed his ball on the tee. “Let’s hope I’m not still unconscious and dreaming this.”

Is James still unconscious and dreaming this?

Is he suffering from concussion and wandering through La La Land with the pixies? Will he actually hit his very first hole-in-one and wipe the supercilious smirk off Waffleton’s stupid face?

BBQ AT THE TAT POOL Now that the Tatura pool is open and everybody is grabbing their sunscreen and togs for a relaxing day out, the Tatura Pool committee has started thinking about the season ahead and are looking for any community groups to host the Friday night BBQ. 2 to 3 people are all that’s needed for your opportunity to raise some funds for your group and enjoy the community spirit! The Cubby is changing in 2018!

Tarja and the team at the Cubby are excited about the changes to our service delivery in 2018. See below our new days and times.

Term 1 – First day of Cubby Wednesday January 31.

Cubby will operate on Wednesdays and Thursdays which are new days. The hours have been increased and the Cubby will now operate from 9am to 2pm.

The fee has also changed and will now be $39 per session.

From July 2, the Federal Government will introduce a new child care package. The package includes a new Child Care Subsidy, which replaces the current Child Care Benefit and Child Care Rebate. The Child Care Subsidy will be paid directly to services. The good news is The Cubby will be transitioning to the new package. To find out more go to https:// www.education.gov.au/ChildCarePackage Please note we have NOT set our fees yet as the transition does not happen until July 2 2018. However, early indicators show that, depending on income, your out of pocket expenses may come down.

Up until July 2 the Cubby will continue to receive some funding from the Federal Government and will continue with our current arrangements and wonderful friendly childcare. We pride ourselves on creating a nurturing and flexible environment for 0-6 year-olds and look forward to meeting any new families, who are very welcome to come in and check out our service.

For all current and new families, we have updated our enrolment forms, so please complete and hand back into the office before first day back at Cubby. The office will be open from Monday, January 22, and if it is unattended you can drop the forms in at the Library and we will collect them from there.

The Early Years - 1914 - 1918 A recruiting train visited Tatura in May 1916 with a load of politicians, recruiting sergeants and the Royal Park Military Band of thirty performers who played a selection of martial airs and marches. The official party was entertained to lunch at the Criterion Hotel and flags weer flown from every building in the town that had a flagpole. A platform had been constructed on a vacant plot near the railway line, and here the principal speaker, Brigadier-General Hughes, managed to persuade four men to volunteer.

The Rev. J. Hurse failed to remove his hat during the National Anthem and he later explained in apology to the Free Press that this “was due to mental abstraction, as he was greatly struck by the forcible arguments of the hero of Anzac.” He made amends at the Presbyterian Church a fortnight later when he preached a touching sermon in memory of Private John Layton, and spoke of the “two-fold sorrow of the people of Tatura at the loss of one of their fellow townsmen, and the tragic death of England’s greatest general.” The General, Lord Kitchener, together with his staff, had gone down when the Hampshire was sunk off the Orkney Islands. There had been recent discussion regarding the Kitchener Pledge which had been brought before the Rodney Council in October 1915. The pledge read: ‘In order that I may be of the greatest service to my country, and carry out the wishes of the Commander-in-chief, at this time of the national peril, I promise – until the end of the war – to abstain from all intoxicants and to encourage others to do the same.’

Despite the various recruiting campaigns, the Government decided that the nation was not contributing the “absolute uttermost”. The question of conscription was raised, and it became one of the most controversial issues since federation. In March 1916, Rodney Council supported a

motion of the Warragul Council that the Government be urged to introduce conscription, and the Shire campaign was opened at the Tatura Mechanics’ Hall in October. Mr A. Bishop “believed Tatura had responded to the call famously, but there were still some who had not answered the call of duty. Some ‘cockies’ had not allowed their sons to go, but had kept them penned up like prized cattle, and only exhibited them when there was a show or some like entertainment on.”

The meeting was orderly and strongly favourable to conscription, despite the receipt of several Tatura people of anonymous letters from Melbourne urging them to “roll up and hoot your loudest and to count the speakers out and boo-hoo them from the very first, as they did in Collingwood last week.” Voting day was Saturday, October 28. All hotels were closed and tea was served in the Fire Brigade Hall in aid of funds for an honour board at the Tatura State School. Tatura voted yes 581, no 371.

Even the boy scouts were given work to do (Free Press, February 1915) – “The idea is that military officers shall lecture to the scouts and give them a general idea of the needs of a military map. Armed with this knowledge the scouts will then sally forth, taking with them parish maps of their particular districts, and upon these they will fill in details which the military eye delight to gaze upon – information concerning fords, the directions of river currents, railway crossings, towers and other similar points. In this way the scout will be serving the country and getting sunburnt at one and the same time.”

THE GATHERING OF THE PURCELL CLAN The weekend of December 30 / 31, saw the coming together of Bill Purcell’s family clan. He had spent the last twelve months researching his family’s history and what a surprising story unfolded in front of him. The Television program ‘Who do you think you are?’ doesn’t hold a candle to this story.

He uncovered fascinating details relating to three new families, a family in a family in a family, I guess you could say. He uncovered a new family for the first three children of his mother. Her fourth child now has a new half-brother that he is about to meet for the very first time after 75 years and Bill has uncovered some very interesting aspects to his own life, including his grandmother on his father’s side and now knows what line of Purcell’s he is related to. His father spent the early years of his life in St Joseph’s Home for Destitute Children in Surrey Hills Melbourne and despite many attempts to find his parent’s, he lived and died never knowing who they were.

The gathering at the Purcell farm, ‘Tuscanny Downs’ at Girgarre East was the culmination of all this hard work.

People came from all over Australia and overseas to attend.

It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to connect with their cousins and learn some family history.

The line of descendants on his mother’s side is also very interesting as it goes back to the Litchfield and McPherson families. The Litchfield National Park in the Northern Territory, The Shire of Litchfield and Fred’s Pass, all have been named in their honour. Then there is the connection with the McPhersons (Bill Purcell’s great, great, grandmother, Mary McPherson), who owned Dagworth Station near Winton. The shearing shed was burnt down during the 1891 Shearers strike, which was the catalyst for the formation of the Australian Labour Party.

The music for ‘Waltzing Matilda’ is reported to have been adapted to Henry Lawson’s poem by someone from this station, possibly his great great grandmother, Mary McPherson. Interestingly, if you were to ring the Winton Shire Council in outback Queensland and your call was put on hold, you would be listening to the tune of ‘Waltzing Matilda’.

The family connection to Australia runs deep.

30 Years Ago…

Further donations are being urgently sought for eight new units at Moyola Lodge. Despite a $16,000 grant from the Department of Human Services, $20,000 from the Rodney Shire Council and generous donations from the various service clubs within the town, the grand total is short of the $260,000 needed for the extensions. With the public appeal set to close on January 31, President of the Moyola Lodge Management Committee, Mr John Lowe has appealed to the public to ‘dig deep’. There is no official fundraiser for the appeal but many individuals and groups within the area have backed the worthiness of the appeal by coming forward with funds. ***** Salinity control has priority over flood mitigation in the Shire of Rodney.

Council decided at its last meeting it would not support options for the Shepparton-Mooroopna flood mitigation scheme put forward by the Rural Water Commission which included the construction of south and east Mooroopna levees. Council considered that salinity prevention and rectification was a higher priority than flood control. The total cost of the flood mitigation scheme has been estimated at $2.6 million with the Shire of Rodney contributing $500,000. ***** Ranger Guides Rosemary Alexander and Larissa Keeble of Tatura are among thirteen Shepparton Rangers travelling to Sydney to participate in the bicentenary concert given by the Guiding movement. Their group won the Encore concert in Shepparton earlier in 1987 and were also winners at the State concert held in October in Melbourne. The girls will be taking part in the Camp Fire singing and will sing ‘The Ranger Song’, and the three-part ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’.

The inaugural cricket match between the Bruce Minns XI and the Ian Purdey XI to honour the late Doug Pyke went right to the wire. It was still anyone’s game with the last ball of the match to be bowled to Stanhope veteran Brian Davies with his team, the Purdey team, needing three runs to win. However, only one run resulted from a mishit leaving Bruce Minns’ team the winner by one run of the inaugural memorial game to honour former Tatura and KDCA stalwart, the late Doug Pyke who was tragically killed in a tractor accident late in 1986. As David Jarman, a friend of Doug Pyke, commented after the game, “Doug would have loved this. It was his scene.” Doug’s widow Kay, and children, James, Joanne and Nicole attended the day and Kay thanked all those responsible for making the day the success it was. ***** Tatura’s hero sprinter, Shane Naylor, has received a Sport Australia Award from the Victorian Athletic Association. However, Shane was not entirely sure what it was for. The award certificate came by way of the mail and heralded Naylor for the best single performance of 1987.

Shane and his family are assuming the certificate marks his remarkable performance in the Australian Track and Field Championships in 1987 when as a junior, he took the open 100 metres crown, casting aside many of the more respected favourites.

CREATE, CONNECT AND SHARE RESPECT February 6 is Safer Internet Day. I am encouraging everyone to reflect on their use of the internet and to consider their safety and the safety of the people they interact with. Safer Internet Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the safe and positive use of digital technology, and to explore the role we can all play in creating a better and safer online community.

Coordinated by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner nationally, and celebrated in 130 countries, this year’s theme is: ‘Create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you.’ Victoria Police is supporting Safer Internet Day and we encourage you to discuss safe use of the internet with your family.

Help spread the word and raise awareness about the importance of respect online. I have read the messaging for Safer Internet Day and I thought I would summarise some examples of being respectful online.

Do your online posts pass the Nanna test? Share respect, not other people’s pictures and videos online. Take a new direction this Safer Internet Day. Do you say online what you’d say face-to-face? Respect online starts with you! Set a good example this Safer Internet Day. Would you be okay to receive what you’re about to send? Think before you click. Maybe take a deep slow breath before you respond?

Do you respect your own privacy online? Ever thought about how much personal info you share? Who is seeing the information your share online?

Ask before tagging someone in a picture online.

Don’t reveal people’s personal information online.

Recognise that other people’s opinions are different than your own.

DECEMBER MARKET IN TATURA The people of Tatura were treated to another delightful market on Saturday, December 16. There were craft stalls with children’s clothes, toys, chopping boards, signs, ornaments, barrel furniture, pampering products, produce and plant stalls and many more. For the children, there was face painting and craft activities. The spinning wheel was in operation with three lucky entrants winning Christmas hams. Mr Sheppy was present for those who wanted ice creams and the Tatura Lions Club cooked up snags on the barbecue. The CWA was selling beautiful Devonshire teas and there was also a coffee van in attendance for those who needed a wake-up coffee. Ronnie Knight from Mooroopna kept the crowds entertained with some music and of course Santa came along to give out lollies to the children. A large Christmas hamper of goods from the stall holders was raffled, won by Shannon from Shepparton.

The market will return in 2018.

February 1 – Serpent Day. Serpent day is a day of reflection and coming to grips with our fears. Serpents have often been associated with wisdom and cunning and we all need to stop and take stock at different times in our life and contemplate what our life lessons have taught us so far.

February 2 – Groundhog Day. Didn’t we celebrate this last year? I have a strong sense of déjà vu about this.

February 3 – World Wetlands Day. Wetlands absorb rainfall thereby reducing floods and droughts. They also provide a safe habitat for a wide variety of birds, many of them endangered. Our very own wetlands, Cussen Park, adds a further layer of interest and complexity to the Tatura environment so get out there and enjoy these interesting surrounds.

Don’t forget the mosquito repellent.

February 5 – World Animal Reiki Day – Reiki means healing with spiritual energy through meditation. You need to form a healing spiritual bridge with your pet to help it re-balance and re-energise. Your pet will thank you by asking for more food.

February 8 – World Propose Day. This is the second day in the Valentine Week and has more to do with marriage rather than simply proposing that you pop down to the pub for a beer.

February 9 – Read in The Bathtub Day. This is an opportunity to spend some relaxing time in the bath with a few scented candles, some aromatic bubble bath, your rubber ducky and your favourite book. My advice is just to spend half an hour in the evening rather than the whole day as you could emerge looking quite wrinkled.

February 10 – Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day. It is what it is, so don’t stress about

it, simply clean up the mess and move on.

You can’t change the past so the best way to celebrate this day is to forgive yourself for past mistakes and get on with your life. Your future has yet to be written.

February 11 – Get A Different Name Day. We identify with our names because we’ve always had them but do they really suit us?

Taking on a new name can help affirm a new identity or the future path we plan to tread now that we’ve reached a fork in the road.

You don’t have to change it legally, just make it known that this is now the new you. You could always choose one of the names that celebrities bestow upon their children. Here are a few examples: Fifi Trixibelle, Apple, Coco, Kyd, Sage Moonblood, Diva Thin Muffin, Moxie Crimefighter, Tu Morrow and Jermajesty. Hmm, all of a sudden your name doesn’t sound so bad after all.

February 12 – Darwin Day. Although this day celebrates the achievements of Charles Darwin and his world changing theory of evolution and the survival of the fittest, I prefer to focus on the Darwin Awards which is all about the extinction of the stupid. You will find an article devoted to this elsewhere in the Bulletin.

February 13 - World Radio Day. It should come as no surprise, unless you’re up for a Darwin Award, that World Radio Day is about celebrating Radio. It’s a day to remember the unique power of radio to touch lives and bring people together across every corner of the globe. Is there anything better than listening to the cricket or football on the car radio whilst you’re on a long journey?

February 14 – Valentine’s Day. To all the men folk reading this, give her something on this day, anything at all. Flowers are always

a winner and dinner at a nice restaurant goes over just as well. I’m warning you, do nothing at your peril. They may say you don’t need to do anything for them but that’s just an insidious test which will herald the next ice age if you fail to pass. Actually, if we all do nothing then this could end global warming!

February 16 – Çhinese New Year. The Chinese zodiac cycles through every twelve years and 2018 is the year of the Dog. The Dog symbolises such character traits as honesty and generosity and Dog people are usually candid, righteous, studious and energetic. They are kind-hearted and always ready to listen to and share other people's cares and burdens. They know how to get along well with others and they will often protect the interests of other people even by sacrificing their own. We obviously need more Dog people in the world but I’m sort of pleased that I’m not one. That’s quite a burden to carry. Previous Dog years were 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994 and 2006.

February 17 – International Random Acts of Kindness Day. The fact that we need to contemplate such a day speaks volumes for our current society. Many members of our society have become so insular that their whole focus is based upon a small 10cm screen held immediately in front of their face and they’re completely unware of what is happening around them. Many of them have already qualified for Darwin awards after wandering in front of cars or stepping off cliffs. For those readers who still have a life, research has shown that the giver of the good deed receives just as many benefits as the receiver. An actual win-win situation. Remember, what comes around, goes around, karma and all of that.

February 18 – Clean Out Your Bookcase Day. Just do it. Why read the same book twice? It just means that’s one less book you will read

February 21 – World Mother Tongue Day. Rest easy. This is not a day reserved for a welldeserved tongue lashing from your mother for all those stupid things you have done during the past twelve months and there have been quite a few haven’t there? This is yet another awareness raising day that promotes linguistic and cultural diversity. There are now so many awareness raising days that I think we should have an international blasé day just so we can recover our equilibrium.

February 22 – World Humble Day. According to C.S. Lewis, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” However, I prefer the quote from philosopher Criss Jami, “The biggest challenge after success is shutting up about it.” Please note that you cannot claim to be a humble person as that will be seen as an act of pride.

February 23 – International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day – This has nothing to do with pensioners struggling on their meagre government pension. This is all about rewarding your faithful dog for their unremitting, non-judgemental loyalty and devotion. They are the ones who will truly appreciate a tasty dog biscuit.

February 27 – No Brainer Day. This is basically a chill-out day where you do all the little things that are simple, obvious and logical.

If a job requires thinking, study or analysis then put it off until tomorrow. Give your brain a rest. Please note that this is entirely different to International Procrastination Day although only a true master of the art of laziness can tell the difference.

The Finished Snacks

HAM AND CORN BREAD CASES These are good as a snack, light lunch or with drinks but do not keep as bread goes soggy overnight.

Ingredients: Sliced white bread 30g butter 1/2 chopped red onion 100g leg ham, finely chopped 2 tablespoons plain flour 1 cup milk 310g corn kernels (I prefer creamed) Method: Remove crusts from bread and flatten with a

rolling pin.

Cut into rounds and press into greased patty pan.

Bake at 190 degrees (approximately 10 minutes).

Serve filled with warm filling.

Filling: Heat butter in pan, add onion and ham.

Cook until onion is soft.

Add flour and stir until bubbly.

Remove from heat, gradually stir in milk.

Stir over heat until mixture boils and thickens.

Stir in corn.

The pricking out season is drawing to a close.

The seedlings already on the racks are really flourishing, the summer storms would have given them a real boost. However, there have been major disappointments as some of the more exotic seeds we tried have failed to materialise. More surprising still is that the old stalwart, red gums, have failed to germinate after three sowings. When one looks along the roadsides and sees the seedling redgums getting ready to choke the table drains, perhaps nature is saying she can do it better than we can. The other real stalwart of the area, grey box, has also been very temperamental.

However, if you are a collector of something a little different, we have a dwarf banksia coming along. For this variety we had to pay so much per seed so it will be quite a bit more expensive than the normal run of plants.

Banksia menziesii dwarf ‘Little Red Banksia’ is a shrub 1m high, about 1-1/2m wide with the well-known banksia candles changing from pink to yellow during autumn and winter. As it is a Western Australian plant and drought tolerant, don’t think of planting it in Goulburn loam. Look for your best draining soil, sandy if possible.

I went to visit Agnes as I do every Wednesday morning at 10am, although I had not caught up with her for a couple of weeks. This was my first post-Christmas visit, so we had lots to catch up on. Agnes welcomed me as always with a hug and a ‘how lovely to see me’.

“Make yourself comfy on the couch and I will get our cups of tea Merle,” she said.

I got comfortable, started to relax and began to look forward to all the catch-up conversation that was soon to take place after Agnes eventually returned with the promised cup of tea, and most certainly a cake or two to share.

It’s only a minor matter and I’m not whether I should point it out to her but she really does take such a long time to make our cuppa’s.

While I was waiting, very patiently if I say so myself, I saw something move out of the corner of my eye and before I could turn around, this massive, white, fluffy and truly dreadful cat jumped up on my lap as if it belonged there.

“Oh, dear lord!” I bellowed. “What on earth is this Agnes? Come and get it off me immediately, for goodness sake.”

“Oh, I see you’ve met Shirley?” she said as she calmly walked into the room with a ridiculously wide smile.

“Shirley? Since when did any Shirley the cat live here Agnes? Be quick now and remove this awful thing.”

“Merle, she really isn’t awful. She is such a sweetie. Fred gave her to for me for Christmas. Anyway, I thought you liked cats.”

“Well I don’t necessarily dislike them, but I most definitely don’t want white cat hair all over me. Look at my pants. You know I always wear black pants. Why would you go

and get a white cat? This cat should definitely be living outside in the yard or something. This simply cannot work, you will have white cat hair everywhere!”

“Come on Shirley,” said Agnes as she used her coochie coo voice. “Who is mummys best girl? Hmm, is it you? Yes, it is.”

“Oh, mercy sakes, just get if off me already.”

The cat was totally oblivious to my frantic disposition, and looked at me as though I also loved the coochie coo little thing. Well I most certainly did not. I glanced down at it in annoyance as Agnes picked her up and I could see white cat hair fluffing up into the air everywhere. The cat’s deep blue eyes almost smiled at me. I suppose she was not an ugly cat, but she simply had no respect for people’s personal space, and that’s the one thing I don’t like about cats, they just think everyone loves them.

“Isn’t she beautiful Merle?” gushed Agnes.

“And so very friendly. I realise her hair is an issue, but I couldn’t tell Fred that, he would be so upset.”

Agnes took Shirley outside and brought me a sticky pole thing to get the hair off my pants.

I was not happy about any of this and thought that if Agnes can’t keep the furry beast locked up then we’d need to have morning tea at my house from now on. I will make sure I have this discussion with Agnes as that cat simply cannot walk around as though it owns the place. I could feel my blood pressure rising and decided that the cakes had better be good this morning to make all this trauma worthwhile.

“There you go Merle, a nice cup of tea and your favourite cakes. I see all the hair has come off too. That sticky thing is a great

Well the arrival of cakes was at least a good thing and I felt myself slowly calming down and decided to have the cat conversation with Agnes another time. Drinking my tea and chatting to Agnes about everything that had happened since we last saw each other and gossiping a little about the ladies in our sewing group certainly helped me feel like my old self again.

As it was my favourite, I put two pieces of cake on my plate and devoured the first one before noticing a giant white cat hair on the second piece.

“Agnes!” I screamed. “Look at this.”

“Oh dear. I’m so sorry Merle. I guess that is from Shirley. She was naughty earlier on and jumped up on to the kitchen table, although I did shoo her off. Just grab another piece and I will put that one in the bin. I guess she just needs a little time to learn the rules around here.”

However, I was not about to risk another piece of cake and finished my tea as quickly as I could.

“We need to finish this visit off another time Agnes as I am feeling very overwhelmed. I think it’s best if we meet at my house from now on until you train that cat.”

AS fate would have it, Fred walked in looking ever so happy. “Hey Merle. How have you been? Have you met Shirley yet? She certainly is a beauty isn’t she?” He glanced around the room. “I thought I saw her in here before.”

I glared at Fred. “Well that may have been while she was up on the kitchen table dropping hair onto the food and goodness knows what

else. Probably licking all the food I suppose,” I said in my very stern tone.

“No it wasn’t that,” he replied. “She usually snuggles up on her favourite chair, the one you’re sitting in actually, but I am not sure where she is now.”

I sniffed disapprovingly. “You do realise Fred, that I had white cat hair all over my black pants, as well as cat hair on my cake.

Why on earth would you bring such an animal into the home?”

“Oh Agnes just loves her. She told me it’s the best gift she has ever received for Christmas,” replied Fred cheerily.

That was the final straw. Before I blew my stack I said it was time I went home. I left the front door and made my way up the walkway to the front gate, desperate to go home, calm down and eat something without cat hair on it.

“Look at that. Shouldn’t we tell her?” I heard Fred say.

“No, I wouldn’t if I was you,” replied Agnes.

I stopped, perplexed. “Tell me what?” I asked as I turned around.

Agnes glared at Fred for a moment. “Ah, Merle,” she said after a moment. “It’s just that you were sitting on Shirley’s favourite chair and ah …”

“And ah, what?” I demanded.

“No, it’s nothing Merle,” replied Agnes.

“Have a safe trip home.”

I shook my head in annoyance. Agnes was clearly starting to go senile. Once I was home and safely seated in my cat hair free chair, I wondered why anyone would own such a problematic animal.

Goulburn-Murray Water is entering the New Year on a high note, with water storages averaging a healthy 80 per cent and Victoria’s highest capacity dam Dartmouth, just under 90 per cent full.

“These figures bode very well for water security over summer and, indeed, throughout 2018,” GMW Managing Director Pat Lennon said. “You only have to go back a short time when GMW and its customers would start off the calendar year with some trepidation on how water availability would hold up during the warmer months, when demand typically reaches its peak. For example, in 2015 our storages were less than half full at 47 per cent which placed added pressure on our operating region, which covers about a third of Victoria and manages 70 per cent of its stored water. Of course we’re mindful that the most recent top up of our storages came at a cost for many, with record rainfall in the opening days of December causing damage across the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District and in the north-east. However, the water harvesting we were able to take advantage of on behalf of our customers during this period was the true silver lining from these storm clouds.”

Mr Lennon said he was pleased to report GMW will enter 2018 with good news on other fronts, in particular its firm plan for the future.

“For more than a year we’ve worked with our customers, stakeholders and communities on our Strategic Plan, which provides clarity on how GMW not only remains sustainable over the next 5, 10 and 25 years, but more than meets the expectations of all,” Mr. Lennon said. “In the short term this means efficiently delivering on the Connections Project and its $2 billion investment in irrigation modernisation.

In the longer term it means maintaining and building on our $5 billion in assets, continually improving our service and storing, managing and delivering water at a fair and equitable price.”

Mr Lennon said the future challenges of

water availability, climate change and the unknowns of an increasingly global market for many customers, make partnering with the communities of northern Victoria and actively contributing to regional development more important than ever. “Our Strategic Plan reflects these goals and challenges. We know GMW must become more agile and more efficient in our changing environment and we are already implementing initiatives in order to meet these goals. For example, as an organisation, we are now three-quarters of the way toward a commitment to reach $20 million in savings by 2020. Much of this has been achieved over 2017 while maintaining and, in many cases, improving our services to customers. So, in the short term, we have many reasons to be optimistic as we enter 2018 with the region’s lifeblood, water, in good supply.”

PALINDROMES A palindrome is a word, phrase or sentence that can be read the same way in either direction. The word, from the Greek palin (back again) and dromos (running), was coined by seventeenth-century English author and dramatist Ben Jonson. GENERATIONS OP SHOP Generations Op Shop was able give out a double blessing at the recent Generations Church Carols held over two nights in December. It was an event featuring great carols, fun and activities for the kids and about 200 plus people attended and enjoyed each night.

The Op Shop was able to give $2000 to Tatura SES on Friday night. Op Shop manager Neville Crow presented the cheque to Cheyanne Keem, deputy controller during the carols night. Cheyanne said, “We are in the process of fitting out a new vehicle with necessary gear for our work and these funds are very timely. We are very thankful for the support the op shop has given in the past and for this cheque tonight. The SES is manned by volunteers and can get call outs at any time to accidents or storm events. It is essential to have the right gear to help in the situation.” Other SES members who attended the night were Kris Parker, Justin Maskell and Tiana Hill.

On Saturday night the Op Shop manager presented another $2000 cheque to Tatura CFA captain Trevor Franklin, He said, “The funds will be put towards equipment purchases to use in the various situations we attend. There is always a list of items that we are upgrading.

We are very grateful for the ongoing support of the church through the op shop. Thank you very much.” The Local CFA members who attended were Trevor Franklin, Peter Devlin, Bill Stockdale and George Taylor. On the night they demonstrated some of their portable lighting gear which was great to see in action.

Generations Op Shop manager, Neville Crow said, “It is the ongoing generosity in the community which makes these funds possible.

We have had a lot of very good quality items that have been donated and we appreciate all those who have given to the shop. The amazing team at the op shop work very hard to process and present donated items for sale to our community in the best possible way. A big thank you to both our community for their ongoing support, and to our team at Generations Op shop for their continuing efforts.”

Inter-regionals: Good luck to Aaron Niglia and Charlie Murdock who have been selected to represent our Goulburn Region in the 14/U Interregional Championships. The event is run by Tennis Vic and will be held in Wodonga this year.

Australian Open: The success of the club has been acknowledged yet again and has been awarded (for the third year in a row) 50 tickets to the Australian Open plus $500 towards a bus liner and New Balance Tennis Tops for each junior player. Members and their families will attend the event to see some world class tennis players. All of this is part of Lisa Niglia delivering ANZTHS at the club. The bus will bounce towards the Aussie Open for the official launch of the ANZTHS on Thursday, January 18. More details of the event will be in the next issue.

GIRGARRE SOLDIER SETTLEMENT On Sunday February 25 in Station Street, Girgarre and located 100 metres from the Memorial Cenotaph, the Girgarre RSL will be unveiling a 3.6m gabion wall with a set of three information panels commemorating and dedicated to the ‘Closer and World War 1 Soldier Settlers’ and their pioneer role in Stanhope North and Girgarre District.

Girgarre RSL members a number of years ago were looking at the feasibility of a Memorial Walking Track along the disused railway line between Girgarre and Stanhope. Initiated by RSL Secretary Paul Blythman, some written plans along those lines were commenced. Paul meanwhile made a grant application to the Australian Government in Oct 2013 through the the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program for funding to undertake a World War 1 display.

Approval was received in Feb 2015. However, in June 2015 Paul relocated with his work to Wodonga.

Community minded and RSL Treasurer Rob Axen was also involved with the Living History Group working towards the production of the book titled ‘Girgarre’ and another member of this working group was John Crilly whose parents had a Girgarre connection. Rob influenced John to join the Girgarre RSL where he took on the role of secretary.

The original concept of a World War 1 display based on Australian battlefronts in Europe, Middle East and North Africa continued for a while longer, however thoughts graduated away from recording World War 1 history as it was considered to have already been well documented throughout Australia.

RSL Secretary John Crilly then researched to a more localised theme which had already been well written up in the Girgarre book and that was ‘Closer and Soldier Settlement in the Stanhope North and Girgarre District’. The RSL members readily concurred and the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program authorities permitted the project subject matter to be revised.

From the Girgarre Living History Group’s book titled ‘Girgarre’ the book information became the catalyst for where the Girgarre RSL was now directing their efforts.

John Crilly, in summarising researched material, received advice and assistance from local Tatura author John Kriesfeld and, following much extensive preparatory work, Michel Signs from Shepparton was then commissioned the production task of the three information panels.

The construction of the impressive gabion wall with volunteer workers and especially Rob Axen and Craig Forster has completed the Girgarre RSL’s project and it is considered a most fitting dedication to the Closer and Soldier Settlers and their pioneer role in the Girgarre district and will be a wonderful historical community asset.

At the conclusion of the unveiling ceremony on February 25, refreshments will be provided by the Girgarre Development Group in the Memorial Hall. All welcome.

It seems that quite a few people missed out on reading the list of phobias that was published previously in the Bulletin and I have been asked on several occasions if we could reprint them.

Personally, I prefer not to reprint previous articles, although this cannot be regarded as a phobia, purely a preference. However, due to the scale of the overwhelming demand, (we have overwhelming and underwhelming but I’ve never heard of whelming, as in – “How was the performance?” “Oh, it was okay, I considered it to be whelming.” I think I’ll make it my New Year’s resolution to spice up my conversation with the occasional ‘whelming’ and perhaps throw in a few ‘gruntles’ as in – “How are you feeling?” “Quite gruntled, thank you.”).

Perhaps I should define what a phobia is because if you happen to be swimming in shark infested waters then obviously the fear of sharks is quite rational and cannot be considered a phobia. However, if you’re at the beach and refuse to go into the water any deeper than your ankles because you’re afraid of sharks then this can be considered a phobia.

According to Wikipedia (so it must be true) ‘a phobia is a type of anxiety disorder, usually defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer commits to great lengths in avoiding, typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational.’

There are so many phobias that many of them didn’t make it into the top 100 so if your phobia is a fear of missing out then you’re going to be traumatised every time a new edition of the Bulletin comes out and your phobia isn’t in it. Although phobias aren’t any fun for the person suffering from it, they often provide a great deal of amusement for friends and family. My son Chris has an irrational fear of spiders, although he naturally believes it’s very rational. I only have to utter the word ‘spider’

According to non-scientific research, these are the top phobias in the world. So here we go, starting with number one hundred and counting back to number one.

100. Taphophobia – This has nothing to do with my old mate Taffy. This is the unwarranted fear of being buried alive (from the Greek ‘taphos’ meaning grave). Nobody wants to wake up in a coffin buried six feet underground and there are historical precedents for this fear. In the past, people in a coma who had no discernible pulse were subsequently buried alive. The lucky ones would wake up on the mortician’s table but others were only discovered upon opening the family tomb and seeing fingernail marks on the inside of the coffin lid. The fear of being buried alive was quite predominant in the 19th century and many tombs and graves were provided with bells to help detect such mistakes. This led to the famous phrase, “Saved by the Bell’, and you thought it was a boxing term. However, modern medicine has made this fear redundant but it still hasn’t stopped people from being buried with their mobile phones, just in case.

99. Myrmecophobia – The irrational fear of ants, (from the Greek ‘myrmex’ meaning ant). Fearing ferocious bull-ants or fire ants is understandable but sufferers fear all ants and have the same reaction to them as people who fear spiders. Most politicians suffer from white ant phobia and with very good reason.

98. Kinemortophobia – The irrational fear of zombies (from the Greek ‘kine’ to move and the Latin ‘mort’ meaning dead). The fact that zombies aren’t actually real hasn’t prevented many people from being terrified of them or becoming afraid of being turned into a zombie.

Sufferers are so afraid of the ‘walking dead’ that even if somebody does an impression of a zombie they experience a full-blown panic attack.

97. Scoleciphobia – The unreasonable fear of worms, (from the Greek ‘scoleci’ meaning parasitic worms). To these individuals, the mere sight or thought of a worm is enough to make their skin crawl. Often, they avoid stepping outdoors during rainy weather when worms wriggle from their holes. If this sounds like you, then I have just the poem to cheer you up.

96. Thalassophobia – The persistent fear of the ocean (from the Greek ‘thalassa’ meaning sea). This phobia is often related to fear of large waves, fear of distance from the land,

as well as fear of vast emptiness. Some thalassophobes might not be afraid of the sea itself but are simply afraid of encountering sea creatures. This phobia took on many new members just after ‘Jaws’ was released.

95. Coasterphobia – The irrational fear of roller coasters, (from the English word ‘coaster’ as in roller-coaster). If you’re a big sissy then there’s nothing irrational about your fear of roller coasters, merry-go-rounds, rocking horses, balloons on a stick or jumping off the big diving board. Roller coasters are named in such a way as to cause fear among the more faint-hearted: Exterminator, Death Ride, Mind Eraser. My advice is to harden up and just go along for the ride and I personally guarantee that if you aren’t killed in some spectacular fashion (which no doubt will make you famous both on the news and You Tube), you will most definitely survive.

94. Ombrophobia – The persistent fear of rain (from the Greek ‘ombros’ meaning storm).

This is another of those steak knife phobias which is accompanied by a whole raft (pun intended) of other phobias, such as the fear of lightning and thunder (astraphobia), fog (homichlophobia), flooding (antlophobia) and drowning (aquaphobia). In the case of acid rain, this fear is not classed as irrational as it can lead to severe burns.

93. Numerophobia – The abnormal fear of numbers, (from the Greek ‘numer’ meaning number). Some people fear specific numbers and these have their own phobias. The fear of 8 is known as octophobia, 13 triskaidekaphobia and 666 (please pause and take a deep breath) hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia. These are associated with bad luck or evil spirits and usually have cultural or religious roots.

However, with numerophobia, individuals fear all kinds of numbers, especially complex mathematical equations or with our younger readers, the three times table.

92. Disposophobia – The irrational fear of getting rid of stuff (from the Greek ‘dispos’ meaning to get rid of’). This is also called hoarding disorder and causes the sufferer to save every small thing they have acquired including receipts, magazines, worn out clothes, newspapers, junk mail, books, you name it. The majority of phobics tend to be socially withdrawn or lonely, which only intensifies this need.

91. Photophobia – The extreme fear of light, (from the Greek ‘phos’ meaning light). This may be the result of a medical condition that causes intense eye pain in the individual and if that’s the case, then it’s totally understandable.

There is another medical condition called photic sneeze reflex (I’m not making this up), where the person looking at light tends to sneeze excessively. Other people however, fear bright, glaring lights as they believe that some lights are from alien sources or evil spirits. They refuse to be photographed, fearing the flash from the camera will steal their soul.

HISTORY OF FRUIT TREE RESEARCH The concept of a Horticultural Research Station was initiated in 1926, when fruit growers were concerned with poor production. From 1926 to 1929, land from Oyen to Kyabram, Tatura, Shepparton, and Katandra to Kiewa was considered. Finally, in 1929, State Government approved the purchase of 40 hectares (100 acres) at Tatura for £2,800 ($5,600) payable over twenty years. Between 1929 and 1936, a detailed soil survey of the property was made and the land was leased out for wheat and grazing.

The budget allocated in the 1936-1937 financial year was £997 ($1994) and was increased the following year to £1050 ($2100). The budget allowed the property to be fenced and cultivated, and four horses, a lorry and some hand tools were purchased. Wages had to be met from this budget. Almost all cultivation in the early years had to be undertaken by contractors, or with horse-drawn equipment borrowed from neighbours, in particular the late Arthur Pickworth of Westlands orchard across the road from the station.

The first orchard of 3000 trees was planted in 1937. Research began on irrigation and soil management of Golden Queen peach trees, and the fertiliser needed for irrigated peach and pear trees. A program of breeding and selection of canning peach varieties began in 1937 when some 4000 seedlings and trees of several cling peach varieties were planted.

Departmental staff from Melbourne under the leadership of Colin Cole, Horticultural Research Officer, planted the trees. These were the days of the 48-hour week, and starting at 7.30 a.m. in winter following a heavy frost, was not appreciated by the Melbourne staff who were used to their heated offices. The only buildings on site were an old weatherboard house occupied by the foreman, a very dilapidated stable, and a small nursery shed. A front room of the house served as an office, and the sleep-out or veranda housed the manager. Lighting consisted of kerosene lamps and candles. Water for irrigation was pumped by a windmill from the nearby Wilson Channel and water for drinking came from a small rain-water tank attached to the house.

Equipment was limited to the bare essentials, and consisted of a lorry, a single furrow mouldboard plough, a set of harrows, a Furphy watercart and some shovels, picks, hoes and small hand-tools. Pesticides were sprayed with a knapsack or power-pump borrowed or hired from a neighbour. Four Clydesdale horses were used to pull field equipment.

In 1941, a second-hand Fordson tractor was transferred to Tatura from the State Viticultural Nursery in Wahgunyah.

The windbreaks around the boundaries, and between the main experimental peach and pear orchards, were planted from 1937 to 1946 and were Lambertiana cypresses, Silver and Lombardy poplars, Turkey oaks and Basket willows.

There were many challenges during the war years. Finance was tight, technical staff and orchard labour were scarce because many men had enlisted in the armed services. Essential supplies and equipment were only available with a permit for particular usage.

By mid-1940, the resources of the Station were increasingly diverted to projects associated with the war. In the Goulburn Valley, production of vegetables for canning, especially tomatoes and navy beans, was considerably expanded. By 1941, cabbages, carrots and beetroot were also being sought for processing under contract at the Goulburn Valley canneries.

When America entered the war, many American units moved to the South West Pacific in 1942 and vegetables, particularly tomatoes, were increasingly needed. In the Goulburn Valley, the area planted with navy beans, beetroot, carrots, lettuce and cabbage increased in the early war years, but it was soon obvious that processing tomatoes were greatly needed. Early research resulted in the tomato varieties Tatura Dwarf Globe and Tatinter which produced high yields and had most of the qualities needed for processed whole peeled-tomatoes, juice or paste.

As well as research associated with the war, there was basic research on both trees and soil. This included fruit and shoot growth patterns of both peach and pear, selection of promising seedling and cross-bred peaches, evaluation of a wide range of pear rootstock and root penetration and water movement in various soil types.

Local residents, students and some staff from Dookie Agricultural College, and neighbouring orchards helped at weekends. Each day, prisoners of war came under armed guard from Murchison to harvest peaches. Six Land Army girls were also assigned to the Station.

By 1946 the peach and pear trees at the Station were well established and were full-bearing and some of the first researchers were George Kidman, Lex Goudie, John Keatley and Wally Gayfer. Research at the Station and in the Goulburn Valley widened and included evaluation of apple rootstocks, and of canning qualities of peach varieties, thinning of peaches based on tree butt circumference, peach replant, frost protection of apricots, irrigation-timing based on evaporation data, permeability, and drainage characteristics of Goulburn Valley and Murray Valley soils.

One of the most pressing problems facing growers was effective control of insect pests and diseases.

Interest and support in the work at the Station increased each year. This was reflected in the increase from 200 people in 1946 to over 500 in 1949 attending field days at the station.

The annual budget steadily increased, and from 1950 to 1959 more research staff were appointed. Among the 21 field and research staff were Bob Harper, Bruce Cockroft, Bram Bakker, Willie Grasmanis, Leo van Heek, David Hughan, Des Free, Jack McPhail and Bas van den Ende.

By 1952, five canning peaches were selected from the many seedlings and crosses made since 1939 and released for commercial planting. A competition among the staff to name the varieties was won by John Wallbrink, who received a bottle of wine. He named the varieties Tatura Dawn, Tatura Sunrise, Tatura Noon, Tatura Aurora and Tatura Sunset.

Funds were also made available for staff quarters to house up to 12 staff, a general store and a modest workshop for the Station’s mechanic, Jim Muir.

In 1956 the staff quarters and attached cook’s flat were opened and accommodated. Three meals a day were provided during the week, while at weekends, food was supplied, but each resident had to do his own cooking. Clean bed linen was provided each week, but the residents did their personal washing. The staff quarters were not insulated. It was hot in summer and cold in winter. Roaring fires were made in the lounge room fire-place with wood from broken fruit cases and peach trees killed by the flood of 1955. The staff quarters closed in 1974 to make way for new buildings.

February GARDENING PLAN February is the time that summer begins to wind down. Although it can still get very hot, it is often the month that sees the most growth in the garden so, water, water, water and then water some more. If you have not mulched your garden beds or around the tops of your pots of planted flowers, then I suggest you give it a go. It saves so much water and time and adds beneficial nutrients to the soil. I personally use organic mulch such as Straw or Sugarcane mulch. I put a good 10cm thick layer and top up once every two years. Most importantly I always feed my plants in the garden bed before I lay the mulch down. Its particularly important to feed plants if you’re choosing to use a bark or woodchip mulch. Woodchip mulch is very porous and draws nutrients from the soil, especially nitrogen which runs the risk of starving your plants.

If possible, water your plants in the morning; plants, like us, need a good breakfast. The sun activates the water, generating the food that the plant will draw on throughout the day.

Although their flowering period may seem a long way off, Camellias and Azaleas are gearing up for the big show. Give them a feed now with an Azalea and Camellia fertilizer. Make sure they are mulched well with an organic mulch, or alternately, grass clippings mixed with manure works also well. Citrus could also do with another feed at this time.

If you have cold climate bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodils or Hyacinths, now is a good time to pop them into the refrigerator. It is beneficial to give them 6-8 weeks of being chilled prior to planting them in the garden.

Re-pot your Cyclamens into fresh potting mix or if already in a pot, give it a go by planting into the garden. Pick a semi protected position of morning sun and shade in the afternoon. Water them with a soluble fertilizer.

Prune your summer fruiting trees once they have finished fruiting and all fruit has been harvested.

Clean up any dead flower heads, for example Agapanthus and Salvias can be dead headed right now, and also roses can do with a tidy up and some rose food applied.

Get ready to start preparing your vegie patches for the winter crops by preparing your soil with manure and mulch. To sweeten the soil, you can add some dolomite.

AWARD WINNERS 1. An Explosive Finale, Russia - A welder named Vargas, worked for The Enterprise for the Construction, Repair and Maintenance of Highways in Tselinnoe. He noticed how well a fire extinguisher fitted into a decommissioned artillery howitzer and inspired, stuffed the fire extinguisher down the barrel. Trained to use the elemental powers of hot plasma, welders are normally not daredevils but Vargus was determined to prove the old adage, 'There are old welders and bold welders but there are no old, bold welders.' He charged the cannon with calcium carbide and water, a reactive combination that produces acetylene welding gas. The fire extinguisher exploded from the howitzer cannon, and pieces of the payload hit the welder, whose head was inconveniently in the path of the shrapnel. In a fight between shrapnel and an empty skull, shrapnel wins.

2. Elephants Want Privacy, Zimbabwe – Dreaming of the perfect wildlife selfie, Mr Moses Ndlovu and two friends spotted three elephants in the bush near the town of Plumtree in southwestern Zimbabwe.

"Shrubbery! This will not do," he said to his companions and they attempted to drive the three male elephants into a clearing. Clearly provoked, the large bull elephant and the two younger males came charging out of the shrubbery and headed for the men. It was time to test the old truism, "I don't have to outrun that elephant, I just have to outrun you." The men took off running, each frantic to save his own hide.

Moses, lagging behind, was trampled to death by the angry bull while his friends escaped.

3. One Way Ticket Out, Germany - Blasting apart a ticketing machine at the train station was supposed to buy Gunther a ticket to the good life, but instead the 31-year-old purchased passage in the opposite direction, losing his life in an explosion that ripped the metal front panel off the machine.

After stiffening his resolve with a few drinks at a bar, he sprayed several cans of aerosol gas into a ticket vending machine. He then he ignited the gas causing an explosion that rocked the Dortmund neighbourhood.

A bar acquaintance recognized him and called for emergency help but, suffering shrapnel wounds and a substantial head injury, Gunther rapidly succumbed to his injuries despite resuscitation efforts.

7. Mobile Phone Shocker, England – If you drop your mobile phone into your bath water, the only problem you have is a nasty repair bill.

However, if you drop a charging mobile phone into your bathwater, then suddenly coroners are demanding warning labels. The purpose of Richard Bull’s life is to act as a warning flag to the rest of us. Mr. Bull, 32, plugged his charger into an extension cord and rested the charger on his chest while using the phone in the tub. He received severe burns on his chest, arm, and hand when the charger touched the water in his West London home, which mattered little as he was already dead from heart failure. You may have noticed that mobile phones are featuring heavily in this year’s Darwin Awards.

8. Terminal Case of Bed-head, America - Sidney Zelaya Gonzalez, 20, was helping out her girlfriend by pinning a king-size mattress to top of a van with the weight of her body. They had found the discarded mattress by the side of the road and were intent on getting it back to their rented unit.

Her belief that friction would keep the mattress and herself fixed in place was misplaced and both Sidney and the mattress slipped off the moving vehicle as it turned a corner. Unfortunately, one of them did not bounce.

TATURA TITANS BASKETBALL The Tatura Titans representative U12 and U18 boys’ teams played at the October Castlemaine tournament.

The U18 Team: The team had a very tough draw with four games on Saturday, kicking off at 8.50am and finishing up at 8pm that night. First up we hit Castlemaine on their home court, and after a slow start we really never got back in to the game. Floyd Vincitorio worked hard in defence with some great rebounding and hard work on their point guard, while Josh Evans and Matt Rennie showed they could shoot the 3, and Tom Dooley-Heath did his best against Castlemaine’s very tall big men, but poor rebounding and defensive lapses in concentration and effort gave Castlemaine easy points.

Not a good start to the day with a 29-44 loss.

A two-game break then we were back on court against Warracknabeal with both teams coming off first round losses and keen to get a win on the board. Matt Rennie repeatedly got to the basket, Josh Evans showed he could do it at both ends with strong rebounds and 3-point shooting, Michael Coonerty put in a much better game stepping it up in defence and coping with some unlucky ref calls, and Riley O’Neill shooting some timely points. We had our chances, but still didn’t rebound well enough and gave up some easy fast break points, and when the siren came were 2 points down, 29-31.

A quick bite to eat during a two game break, whilst cheering on the U12 boys to their first win, and we were back on court again for our third game in five hours! This time up against Gisborne. This was a bit of a repeat of our first game with the boys not working hard enough in defence, giving Gisborne too many second chance points off the boards, and not doing a good enough job of controlling the ball in offense. 10 points down at half time, and despite a much better effort in the second half, we were unable to get back within touch and went down 25-42.

A 4 hour break saw the boys back on court with renewed energy, but tired legs, for their fourth game and up against Terang who were unbeaten for the day. The boys kept their best till last. Jarom Owen-Horn used his athleticism and rebounded with more aggression, Floyd Vincitorio was always there to help bring the ball down the court, Tom Dooley-Heath posted up and played his role with some good passes to our guards, Matthew Rennie scored repeatedly from fast break opportunities, Riley O’Neill played the team game, Josh Evans worked hard under the ring with blocks and rebounds and still contributed in offense and Michael Coonerty gave his all. In the final seconds we were 2 points down and had control of the ball, but were unable to get the final score to give us a win, going down 39-41. Two 2 point losses, oh so close, and we missed out on finals.

The U12 Team: Backing up from the Shepparton Tournament the U12 boys went straight on to the Castlemaine tournament on the very next weekend. First up the boys met Bendigo 5, who beat us by 3 points at the Shepparton tournament. Once again it was a competitive game with both teams showing improvement from their meeting the previous weekend.

Unfortunately, we were unable to improve on the result, and again went down by 3 points – 23-26.

The U18 Titans Team Next up we played Maryborough, an association much closer to our own size. The boys played a fantastic game, using all of their defensive skills, keeping the opposition to only 6 points. Offensively we were much improved with better passing resulting in better shot opportunities and all players scoring. Final score Tatura 33 def Maryborough 6.

This result put us in to the qualifying final against Bendigo 4 and we expected a tough game given we had been beaten by the Bendigo 5 team.

The boys played their very best, and took it up to the taller Bendigo boys.

In a game that went down to the very last seconds we were unfortunate to just miss out on moving on to the next round of finals, losing again by 3 points!

Our fourth game for the tournament was a consolation game, where we met Maryborough again, resulting in another definite win.

A great tournament by the boys with 2 wins and 2 losses by 3 points.

Congratulations to all the players, Reece Butler, Cooper O’Neill, Ryan Shalley, Luke Hamilton, Shannon Wills, Marcus Perry, Robbie Hamilton and Cooper Gow on their marked improvement over the two weeks. A special mention to Coach Maddi Rijs who is doing a great job of teaching these boys the game of basketball. They are looking forward to competing at Benalla in February.

A big thank you to Coaches Maddi Rijs and Zac Collyer for giving so freely of their time and expertise.

Tatura Basketball Autumn Comp Start Date: The Tatura Amateur Basketball Association Autumn Competition will commence Monday February 26. This competition is open to players 8-16 years of age (must still be 16 on 30/6/18), and is played Monday and Wednesday nights.

100 YEARS OF MARRIAGE

WHAT A DECEMBER AT TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL!!

The month of December can be a time to wind down and think of holidays and the excitement of celebrations. Not at Tatura PS. We fitted that and ever so much more into our three weeks of school. The hot weather saw us move a few things around, but the annual concert was still a success in the relative cool of our BER building. The swimming program had to be squeezed into one day due to the predicted 40+ temperature but we all had fun at our local pool. The Grade 6 students did themselves proud at their Graduation Ceremony which was held in Victory Hall.

It was a fitting end to their days at primary school as they proudly presented speeches to their families and friends. They shared their memories of Tatura Primary and their hopes and dreams for the future. Many rounded out their speech with a heartfelt quote that meant something special to them.

Staff were involved with interviewing for some new teaching positions and I’m pleased to announce that we will be welcoming Miss Callaway, Miss Nash and Mr Secchi to our staff for 2018. Our new Foundation students completed their transition program with a full morning at school and they can’t wait to start in

earnest in 2018. Our Grade 6 students had their first full day at high school and, by all reports, they are just as excited as the little ones! During the month of December we also had the morning tea for our helpers. It was well attended and I wish to thank them all for the special support they give our school community.

Junior School Council had their final meeting for the year and celebrated their successes with a morning tea.

Three of our Envirokids attended the opening of the Sound Walk at Cussen Park which is an amazing local resource. The biggest news of all during December was the news that we are to receive 2.54 million dollars to replace our front building with a state of the art new building. Planning for this amazing development is underway and I look forward to sharing plans with the community throughout the coming year.

A reminder to our families that our office opens on Wednesday, January 24 and that school starts for Grade 1 to 6 students on Tuesday, January 30. Foundation students will commence on Thursday, February 1.
