WITH KERRY…

The Darkest Shore by Karen Brooks. 1703: The wild east coast of Scotland. Returning to her home town of Pittenweem, fishwife and widow, Sorcha McIntyre, knows she faces both censure and mistrust. After all, this is a country where myth and legend are woven into the fabric of the everyday, a time when those who defy custom like Sorcha has, are called to account. It is dangerous to be a clever woman who ‘doesn’t know her place’ in a town rife with superstition. So when a young local man falls victim to witchcraft, the Reverend Cowper knows who to blame. What follows for Sorcha and her friends is a terrifying battle, not only for their souls, but for their lives. Don’t read this book before you nod off for the night. It had me angry, frustrated and grinding my teeth. “How could I continue reading it?” I hear you ask. The reason being is that it is an excellent book. Based on a true story of women accused of witchery for no other reason than to have a mind of their own or if they owned property. At the hands of men of the church, many women were abused terribly. That’s what had me so agitated. Kerry Gardner

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL Welcome to our first article for 2022. Dhurringile Primary School students and staff were delighted to start school again and are hoping for a near normal year. Staffing Our staff for 2022 have remained the same as last year. Mrs Wilson is our principal as well as teaching 2 days per week. Mrs Naughton teachers our class for the other 3 days per week. The lovely smiling face in our office is Joyce. We have Miss Smith as our visiting librarian, who travels around various small schools with her library van; Miss Cowan as our visiting art specialist teacher; and Signora Acca as our Italian teacher who teaches us through the virtual WebEx system. Community Projects This year, we are continuing with most of our community projects from 2021. The Dhurringile school and community street library and plant swap are available at the front of the school. All community members

are welcome to use this service. Books are regularly showcased through our school newsletter – Emu News. Last year, we added 2 sizes of both cloth and disposable masks to the street library for the community. Masks are available as an adult and child size. So far, 70 cloth masks and 20 small packets of disposable masks have been distributed. A huge thanks to our very small group who sew the masks for us. At our recent working bee, we cleared out our kitchen garden to make way for a new outdoor learning space. This space will have a shade sail overhead with coloured seating and a whiteboard teaching area. The space will be used for general outdoor teaching and learning as well as a shaded area when working in the kitchen garden. Our kitchen garden is to be relocated to behind the shelter shed which is adjacent to the new learning space. We are waiting on final approval from the VSBA before starting the works.

INTERNATIONAL DAIRY WEEK THANKS To all the 200 plus volunteers who assisted with 2022 International Dairy Week, the Tatura Football Netball Club and the IDW subcommittee would like to thank you all very much. After having a break in 2021 due to the dreaded Covid, 2022 was always going to be a challenging time, especially given the fact that the Omicron variant was just reaching new heights. The new owners, Declan and Brad, were certainly thrown a few curve balls in both the lead up and during the event. However full marks to them and the new events coordinator Stacey, who did a fantastic job in getting the event up and running. Numbers were obviously well down which certainly will affect end results for the TFNC, but the enthusiasm shown by the organisers and their willingness to change a few things was well accepted by the dairy fraternity. They are very much looking forward to a bigger and better 2023. After having a year off, the TFNC subcommittee’s biggest fear was maintaining volunteers in all the required sections. This did not eventuate as the fantastic people of Tatura did not let us down, and although there may have been a few ‘retirements’, all positions were filled. Great to see some newcomers to our merry band! A special mention goes to the gatekeepers who were given the job of not only taking entry fees, but checking Covid vaccination requirements, the checking and monitoring of digital ticket sales, and the QR code check in. The digital age has finally hit and even if Covid is gone in 2023, the advent of computer ticket sales will be the new way forward. 2023 hopefully will return to full steam ahead so if you wish to be involved or know a potential volunteer, give me a call on 04 0833 5284 around November and we will make sure that contact is made prior to next year’s event. Once again, thank you all very much. Daryl Eaton, TFNC IDW Coordinator

MURCHISONTOOLAMBA FNC NEWS The Murchison-Toolamba Football Netball Club is keen to get back to connecting the community with a place for everyone to watch their community team compete in football and netball. The work behind the scenes has continued throughout the impacted years of 2020 and 2021, leaving us in a position to be very excited about the 2022 Kyabram & District League season. We are ever so close to meeting our target of being able to cater for the whole family at the same place on the same day. Our youngest netball team being 11 & Under and our youngest football team being Under 13s. This work means that all kids can have their game scheduled between 8:30am and noon, allowing for a great family atmosphere. If you are interested in being involved in any of our junior teams, please attend our Season Launch and Information Evening on Thursday, February 24 from 5:30pm. On the football front we once again have Nick Iorianni leading the Seniors. We have continued to recruit well and have announced the following recruits - Trent Freer, Michael Coad, Brodie Sanders, Kal Sanders, Nathan Turner, Sam Ward, Jayedon Hexter and Matt Curtis from Mooroopna; James and Andrew Lloyd from Shepparton East join their brother Aidan at the Hoppers. Reigning GVL Abhkair Medallist – Benji Kennedy also returns to MTFNC. Former Mooroopna junior, Ryan Sarkady also joins the Hoppers via Katandra. These recruits add to the largely retained list from our previous campaigns. The Reserves will once again be ably lead by David Murray and with so many players vying for Senior positions, the Reserves should expect to be quite formidable. Peter Miller continues with the Under 18s and with over 22 boys already training the group has every reason to be excited. Craig Thompson will continue with the 4th XVIII as they progress from Under 12s to Under 13s. Training continues at the Murchison Recreation Reserve on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:45pm. Sharne Milne has taken the reins of the A Grade team and with our trials currently underway is expecting some solid line ups in A, B, C and possibly C Reserve. Our senior netball trials will continue through February; Sunday 13th, Tuesday 15th and Thursday 17th. We are very excited by the calibre of players who are currently trialling for the club. Juniors are not required to trial at this stage and are to join in our Season Launch and Information Evening on Thursday, February 24, from 5:30pm. The work behind the scenes to have the MATCH (Murchison and Toolamba Community Hub) built over the coming years continues to grow momentum. Throughout 2022 we will be embarking on an audacious fundraising effort to ensure that we have a venue suitable for improving community connections. Looking forward to a great 2022. Thanks to Gwen and Mandy for sewing many of them for us. The date for the next meeting is Thursday March 10th, at 1:30 pm at the Bowling Club. Visitors are very welcome. Our Juniors met at Hodson House on Thursday 3rd February, and really enjoyed catching up with each other. They made trinket boxes from video cases, decorating them using recycled magnets and pretty papers. Beatrice Greaves, publicity

FEEDING YOUR PETS

Hi all! I’m going to have a bit of a chat about dog (and cat) food. I am often asked questions about raw/fresh feeding vs processed feeding, so I thought I would try to answer some of the most common questions. 1. What is so bad about kibble? Ok. Well, the biggest issue with kibble is that regardless of how great the ingredients are that may go into it, by the time it has been processed, cooked at high temperatures and stabilised for long shelf life, there isn’t much nutrient left. That’s why its synthetically added. The manufacturing process also creates mycotoxins which have been strongly linked to many health issues including allergies, cancers and organ issues to name a few. Animals on a kibble diet often have issues with moisture/dehydration levels in their bodies. Especially cats. 2. Why is freeze/air dried food better? Air dried and freeze dried food retains the nutrients because the processing is minimal and high heats are not applied. They may appear more expensive, but they don’t contain “fillers” and if used as a topper to real food so that you have peace of mind that your pet is getting the nutrients it needs, they are actually quite cost effective. 3. Can raw meat make my pet sick? Well yes it can but no more so than anything else you may be feeding. Quality and hygiene play a role in this. If you are buying human grade, that’s great, or there are pet food suppliers but find a reputable one. I use Northern Country Pet Supplies in Nagambie for my fresh roo and beef. They deliver to Tatura on Wednesdays. Freezing offal and chicken for a few days before feeding is a good idea. Also, dogs and cats generally cope far better with bacteria than we do. 4. Raw or cooked? Which is better? The purists will tell you raw but personally, I believe that as long as its real food, that’s great! The key is variety, variety, variety! Even if you are still feeding kibble, the more real food, table scraps you can add the better. 5. How do I know what my pets’ nutritional needs are? This part can be a little scary but don’t panic! Go slow. There is lots of raw/fresh feeding material out there. Just start adding what you know is good to what your pet is eating now and gradually increase as you get more confident. There are lots of pre-packaged products in pet stores. I even use them from time to time just for variety. Just make sure there are no preservatives added. A good start base for dogs is 65% meat and meaty bones, 25% veg. fruit, plant matter etc. 5% secreting organs 5% liver. For cats its mainly animal. Their digestive tract is just not designed to digest large amounts of plant matter. Of course there is a lot more to it but it’s a good place to start. Our animals are just like us. To be healthy they need variety! 6. What shouldn’t I feed my pet? Just like people some animals can eat one thing and others can’t. You will get to know you pet as you get more comfortable with fresh feeding. Here are the biggest ‘no no’s for all dogs. Grapes/sultanas/raisins, chocolate, onion/shallots, xylitol (substitute sweetener) also sometimes called other names like birch sugar and wood sugar so be careful. Also products that say “less sugar” often have substitute sweeteners. Always check labels. Weight baring bones can cause issues too. Stick to porous bones like neck, brisket etc. Cheers and happy feeding! Marie

TATURA MUSEUM MUSINGS The museum has been fortunate to receive a volunteer grant enabling us to purchase a new photocopier. This will enable the team to print high quality display labels as well as high resolution scanning and all the regular office printing requirements. Another grant was received from the Bendigo Bank assisting the museum to now have the advantage of an electrically operated front door, which is very

convenient for wheelchairs and all visitors. A surprise phone call to the museum has resulted in the offer of a model of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was built in 1941 – 1943 by Lieutenant R. Trucco, an Italian Prisoner of War in Camp 13. It is about two metres long with moving vehicles on the roadway and is a very valuable model. George Ferguson

TOOLAMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL Welcome to the 2022 school year! We hope that everyone has had an enjoyable summer holiday. Our students are all very happy to be back with their friends and teachers. This is a particularly exciting time for the 22 children who are beginning school in Foundation. We welcome new families to our school community, we trust that through our strong partnerships parents will feel connected throughout their journey at Toolamba PS. QUILTING AT TOOLAMBA During Visual Art lessons last year, the Grade 5 and 6 students reflected on what our school values meant to them, and they designed a square to depict their thoughts. Rhonda White, our very talented local quilt maker then incorporated their artwork into a quilt which

now proudly hangs in the Central Learning Street. ASSEMBLIES Assemblies continue to be held on a Monday afternoon at 2.45pm in the Amphitheatre. Teachers will continue to present their ‘Striving for Excellence’ Awards and Student Leaders will also present their respective awards. Our assemblies are student lead and commence with an Acknowledgment to Country and our National Anthem. SPORT We are hopeful that we will be back at Howley Oval on the last Tuesday of term to compete alongside Tatura Primary School and Sacred Heart School. These Athletic Days are real highlights of the school year.

JOSH'S "PIC" OF THE MONTH Rib Eye Cutlet You cant go past the classic steak with chips & salad. With this prime cut, cooking should be kept to a bare minimum and served medium (internal temp 60c). My tip for a perfect ribeye is to pat dry, season then cook in the oven at 120c, cook till about 50c then sear in a hot pan. Make sure to rest a thick cut for at least 10mins before serving.

THE IDES OF MARCH Having been forced to read Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar’ when I was in Year 10 at high school, I have always associated the phrase, ‘The Ides of March’ with impending doom. For those of you who weren’t forced to read the play, and I can’t imagine anyone reading it for pleasure, Julius Caesar, who was Roman dictator at the time, ignored the warnings of a soothsayer who uttered the phrase, “Beware the Ides of March.” Admittedly, there wasn’t a lot of information in this statement for Julius to discern what the warning pertained to and he went about his usual business on this particular day and ended up being stabbed in the back 23 times by a group of conspirators who weren’t happy with his leadership. Julius Caesar is famous for many things, including the month of July, and since that particular day he is also responsible, albeit involuntarily, for the phrase backstabbing. This occurred in 44 B.C. so as you can tell from watching the news, nothing has changed in politics since that time although the knives used now are figurative. The knife that hurt Julius Caesar the most, was wielded by his close friend and advisor, Marcus Brutus, which led to his supposed last words, “Et tu, Brute?” (And you, Brutus?), so once again history tends to repeat itself, particularly in Australian politics, and on both sides of the house. Our Prime Ministers should learn Latin as it will give their eventual demise a touch of gravitas. However, getting back to the Ides of March, I can’t help but think that this particular date has been maligned by history. If Julius had listened to the soothsayer and stayed home in bed on that day, then I’m sure he would have been stabbed on the following day. Unless of course he’d met the same soothsayer again who said, “Beware the day after the Ides of March.” I can’t help but think that without any additional information, Julius was always going to struggle to overcome the conspirators. “So what are the Ides of March?” I can hear you asking. “Are you ever going to tell us?” In Roman times, the ‘ide,’ derived from the Latin idus, marked the halfway point of the month and usually alluded to the day of the full moon. Each month had their ides. For example, there were the Ides of April, the Ides of July the Ides of December and so on. If the conspirators had any sense of the theatrical, they would have waited and assassinated Caesar on the Ides of July but they apparently lacked patience and so it was the Ideas of March that ended up with the bad name. The Ides of March had always been a celebratory day dedicated to Mars, the Roman god of war and the population would happily attend to watch the military parade as it marched through the city. Undeterred by Caesar’s death, the Ides of March continued to be a celebratory day right through until the end of the Roman Empire and only became heavily cloaked in a dark mood of superstition after Shakespeare wrote his play. Therefore, in the spirit of Shakespearean theatre, (and please remember that my Dutch great-aunt was a seer), I am here to warn you that something unusual is going to happen to somebody, somewhere, somehow on the Ides of March. Remember, that when it does, you read it here first. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. John Kriesfeld

TIGHTENING THE BELT I’ve been losing weight. A fair bit of weight actually. So much so that people who haven’t seen me for a while often don’t recognise me at first. Some people are reluctant to mention it, fearing that my weight loss might be caused by severe illness. Others cautiously ask, “Are you well?” Fortunately, the answer is, that while the final trigger to make me serious about weight loss was being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, I am well and feel a lot better for shedding 30 kilograms. But such success is laced with doubt and indecision; will it last, at what weight should I stop, should I buy new clothes? The phrase, ‘Tightening the belt’ suggests that things are not going well. These days it is normally used metaphorically and applied to financial difficulties. If you have to tighten your belt, you have to spend less money and manage without things because you have less money than you used to have. It derives from a time when people went hungry when times were hard. In many places in the world starvation is still a frightening reality. One may tighten their belt after losing weight from being hungry. The irony for us in rich, Western nations is that cheaper foods are usually higher in fat and sugar. Spending less on food may in fact lead us to put on weight as we eat cheaper cuts of meat and cheap take-away foods. I have lost so much weight that I have been tightening my belt. So much so that I needed to cut about 15 centimetres off my belt because the tail of my belt was starting to wrap around my waist a second time and it was embarrassing when it wouldn’t secure itself in a trouser loop. Despite this problem, it was a surprisingly hard decision to cut it off. Like most people who struggle with their weight, this isn’t the first time I have lost weight. It’s hard to get past that nagging, doubting inner voice asking, “But will it last?” It should be an easy question to answer, but it isn’t. It should be easy… Making any commitment and sticking to it is tough. Change doesn’t come easy. Old habits die hard. It’s so hard to believe that this is forever. It’s easy

to justify leaving the door open to, what my childhood church would have called, backsliding. God seems used to dealing with fickle people who promise one thing and do another. At times God seems to lose patience with them, especially when they try to rationalise why they can’t accept their lot or commit to the task at hand. God told Job to “Gird up your loins like a man!” (Job 38:3), and told Jeremiah to “Gird up your loins; stand up and tell them everything that I command you.” (Jeremiah 1:17) Jesus told his disciples to “Gird your loins and light your lamps.” (Luke 12:35) I’ve always thought it was a funny turn of phrase. Loins? Mmmm… Back in the days of the Ancient Near East, both men and women wore flowing tunics and around the tunic, they would wear a belt or girdle. While tunics were comfortable and breezy, the hem of the tunic would often get in the way when a man was fighting or performing hard labour so when Hebrew men in ancient times had to battle the Philistines, they would lift the hem of their tunic up and tuck it into their girdle or tie it in a knot in order to keep it off the ground. This in effect created a pair of shorts that provided greater freedom of movement. Thus, telling someone to “gird up their loins” was telling them to get ready for hard work or for battle. It was the ancient way of saying “Man up!” Most of us want to grow and to improve. We try to become healthier. We work on our relationships and our quality of life. But though we desire growth and do try to improve, many of us lack adequate discipline to follow through with our desire for growth. Commitment involves obligation. A commitment is essentially an agreement to keep showing up, showing up even when you'd rather not, even when you're in a bad mood, even when it's inconvenient. The thing we all know about commitment is that it's only when you are willing to make an unconditional commitment that you create the possibility that the thing you desire might actually happen. Alfred Adler, writing about marriage, said, "If men or women contemplate an escape, they do not collect all their powers for the task." He could just as easily have been writing about personal growth, genuine intimacy, sporting achievement, spiritual growth, or keeping to a diet! Jesus said to one of his would-be followers, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’ (Luke 9:62) I cut my belt! GV TREE GROUP Everlasting Strawflower Flowers, flowers, flowers! Over summer we have tried growing a few special flowering natives along with our standard trees and shrubs. The Everlasting Strawflower (Bracteantha bracteata) is one of these species. The genus includes a number of annual and short lived perennial small shrubs full of daisy like flowers including the paper daisies. They are found over most of Australia and in most climates. We have grown two varieties, a short cultivar growing around 30cm tall and a taller cultivar growing up to a meter tall. Strawflowers come in a range of colours but most commonly hues of yellow. Plant in full sun in friable rich soil and these will produce waves of large showy flowers. They will also do well in pots. Pruning lightly, best done by cutting the flowers for display inside, will keep the flowers coming. Flowers last well in a vase and can be dried for arrangements. These are ready to plant or pot up now and are quite mature so they should flower very quickly. Our seedlings are all pricked out and growing well. They have benefitted from January’s sunshine with most species ready to be planted as soon as we get a bit of moisture into the soil. Good growing Ash

REBOOT YOUR MOJO TATURA! The organising committee for Reboot Your Mojo Tatura are thrilled to announce the new date for this free community event will be on Saturday, March 19, 8am-12noon. This is an exciting opportunity for us all to reconnect. As a community, we recognise that due to Covid-19 and the numerous lockdowns we've been through, many of our local residents have been isolated and subsequently become disengaged. This has impacted people's physical and mental health. We would love to bring our community members back together, while hosting an event that highlights the incredible services and groups that are part of Tatura’s social fabric. The market-style event will include live music and free BBQ, while giving you the opportunity to meet with local clubs, volunteer groups and businesses that aim to improve health and wellbeing. We have over twenty stallholders from a range of local sporting, community, and wellbeing

organisations. There’s room for more stalls too, so if you’d like to promote your local club, business, or service, please get in contact with Tatura Community House ASAP on Tel: 5824 1315 or email: manager@tatcom.com.au. This event wouldn’t be possible without the wonderful support from our local businesses, clubs, and financial sponsors. Special thanks must go to Unilever, Hotwire Mobile Auto Electrics, Generations, Hill Top Golf Club, Primary Care Connect, Greater Shepparton City Council, Ritchies IGA, Tatura Hot Bread, Tatura Foodworks, Lions Club, and The Bulletin. So, if you’ve been thinking about trying something new in 2022, come down to Stuart Mock Place on Saturday, March 19, to meet the locals that can make it happen! Let’s reboot Tatura’s Mojo! There truly is an amazing community feel in Tatura. One of the reasons you should come on over is we run a really great film club. Yeah, in Tatura! The Tatura Film Society was established early in 2015 as a dependant organisation of the Tatura Civic Halls Committee Inc. We are a membership-based film society, volunteer-run, not-for-profit and screen on Monday evenings. Sure Covid messed us around a little but now we’re back baby, and we have recently finetuned our listing for 2022 aiming at providing an eclectic variety for all to enjoy. Our membership year is March to February inclusive. We have ten screenings in a year, pausing in December and January for the holiday break. Our 2022/23 membership fee is once again a mere $40. It’s an offer you can’t refuse! Opening night for this year is March 23, screening Top End Wedding. All screenings are at the Mechanics Hall, 75 Hogan Street, Tatura at 7.45pm but we enjoy meeting earlier for complimentary tea/coffee/ biscuits and a chat before the show. Pieced together is a new exhibition at Tatura Museum. It is an exhibition of works by Anne Doller, Meg Doller and Rachel Doller. Within each patchwork quilt, woven artwork and mixed-media collage, visual cues – like vibrant colours - evidence familial connections and the nurturing of creativity across generations and art forms. Variations in shapes, techniques and the use of grids, highlight each artists’ unique creative process and aesthetic. Exhibited in the space dedicated to the preservation of Tatura’s history, the works are determinedly contemporary. From Meg’s focus on sustainability to Rachel’s need to find joy within known spaces during isolation, to Anne’s meditative stitching, these artists are thriving together. The exhibition is part of the Shepparton Festival – Thrive 2022 and opens on Sunday, March 20, 2pm – 4pm. The exhibition which will run until April 15 and can be visited weekdays 1pm – 3pm and weekends and public holidays 2pm – 4pm. Entry to the Museum and exhibition is $5 Adult / $2 Child. Anne, Meg and Rachel are so thankful for the support of Rodney Printers, Tatura Museum and Shepparton Festival.

TATURA RSL At the Tatura Australia Day celebrations held on January 26, the Tatura ‘Water Tower Project’ was named the Community Event of the Year, twice, once for Tatura and district, and additionally for the Greater City of Shepparton. The Tatura RSL membership was very happy to have that double recognition. The origin of this project, goes back to Pozieres, France, where Tatura RSL members, many years ago, personally observed painted on Pozieres’ Water Tower the following, ‘an Aussie soldier face wearing a slouch hat, Victoria Cross, red poppy 1916.’ In June 2014, with a similar concept in mind, two Tatura RSL members made an approach to Goulburn Valley Water (GVW). In following up on this idea, it became apparent that mind sets and other difficulties had to be overcome. In 2018, a very dedicated RSL member re-ignited that proposal once again, seeking support from many sources, including political appointees, the Monash Family, GVW, the local community and the Shepparton Council in order for this project to come to fruition. On Sunday, June 27, 2021, the unveiling of the Tatura Water Tower murals took place at its location in Ross Street, Tatura. The northern side of the water tower depicts a mural of General Sir John Monash in sepia and on the southern side, ‘weeping poppies on a vine,’ bright red in colour and very visual from a long way off. The Tatura Bulletin’s July edition covers the unveiling. The Community Event of the Year award on Australia Day was received by Mr. Robin Fairchild, president of the Tatura RSL, accompanied by Mr. Robert Mathieson, who displayed uppermost dedication and persistence throughout this whole journey of the ‘Water Tower Project.’ Rob responded to these awards with an excellent speech. From the Tatura RSL, thank you Rob whole-heartedly. The Tatura RSL congratulates all other award winners on the day. Dignitaries Suzanna Sheed, Independent State member for Shepparton and Anthony Brophy representing Shepparton Council, also delivered speeches, along with other participants. Mr. Rod Schubert the M.C. on the day, who ‘winged it’ at short notice, also provided light humour throughout. Rod did an excellent job and in his words, “Tatura always punches above its weight, onwards and upwards.” Thank you to Rod who was a Past President of the Tatura RSL. Tatura RSL also congratulates the Toolamba Community for their dedication and commitment in the construction of a war memorial, ‘In honour of those who served.’ The memorial is located outside the community centre at Toolamba and received the ‘Community Event of the Year’ award at the Australia Day awards. Passionate and dedicated volunteers living in small communities such as Tatura and Toolamba, have taken wonderful steps to ensure past generations continue to be recognized by way of these memorials. These don’t just appear by themselves and I commend those passionate and dedicated volunteers. Lest we forget. Mal Watts, Tatura RSL member

TATURA LIONS CLUB It is with regret that the Lions Club of Tatura needs to cancel this year’s Tat Fest which was to be held on Sunday March 5 due to too many Covid restrictions! Tatura Lions would like to thank all those in our community who have helped us over previous years. To our many Sponsors, a BIG thank you for your on-going support, as without this support we would not have been able to hold the many successful Fests over previous years. We will be continuing with the Lions Skin Check and Awareness screening bus on Saturday March 4 and Sunday March 5 at Mactier Gardens. We are proud to announce that Cardamone Real Estate will be our major sponsor for the Screening Bus. This will allow us to continue with this very important project. If you are interested in getting a screening done, please contact Secretary Malcolm Campbell on 0429683775 Numbers are limited on both days, so get your bookings in early. Hopefully things will change next year and we will be able to hold the Fest! NOTE: As at 8 February all Skin Check appointments have been filled. We will consider having the bus back later in the year. Tatura Lions Club President and Members

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, February 2022 - Page 23

From small things You may remember that in the last episode, Big Jack had an unfortunate encounter in the showers with a slippery bar of soap and ended up flat on his back. Henry Ramsbottom, who chose not to pick up the soap, now has to deal with the fallout from that incident. Episode 5 – Extremely Rough Justice Doug, Billy and I were escorted back to our cell by two guards that harassed and shouted at us the entire time it took to walk back. I had discovered that jail was a very noisy place. I was becoming increasingly anxious about the whole Big Jack affair as I didn’t want to spend one second longer than I had to in this place. “You saw what happened, didn’t you?” I said to Doug. “It was clearly an accident.” “I’m sorry,” replied Doug with a dismissive shrug, “but I didn’t see anything.” “I didn’t either,” said Billy. “In fact, nobody in that shower saw nothing.” “But you were talking to Big Jack when he stepped on the soap.” “Was I?” replied Doug. “I don’t remember that.” “The thing is,” continued Billy, “nobody ever sees or hears anything that goes on around here. It’s the safest course of action. That way you don’t accidently get involved in any vendettas or gang warfare.” “The thing is,” continued Doug, “if you see anything, even just once, then you get a reputation for being a bit of a loose cannon, unsound, unreliable, not one of the boys.” “That’s right,” Billy said solemnly, “and a reputation like that can have serious consequences.” “So, you don’t need to worry about anybody ratting you out,” added Doug. “There’s nothing to be ratted out about,” I said yet again. “Big Jack stepped on the soap.” “If you say so,” replied Doug. “Don’t worry,” said Billy. “You’re safe from the authorities because nobody saw nothing.” “I suppose that’s one good thing,” I said tiredly. “Big Jack’s gang however, is another matter altogether,” said Doug. “They’ll be out for blood for sure.” “They can’t let that sort of disrespect go unpunished,” added Billy, “especially from a newcomer.”

“But it was an accident,” I almost wailed. “There was no disrespect intended.” “Well, we only have your word for that, don’t we, because nobody else saw nothing,” said Billy. Another bell chimed throughout the facility and Doug informed me that it was time for dinner. “Just keep a low profile,” he murmured. “They won’t do anything to you just yet. They’ll make sure you suffer awhile first.” I followed Doug and Billy into the cafeteria and quickly became the centre of attention as everybody in the room stared at me as I stood in line waiting to be served. I don’t remember much about the meal apart from the fact that it was hot and resembled beef stew. Several inmates occasionally walked past me and drew their fingers across their throat in the time honoured gesture of death. Doug interrupted my thoughts of despair with the news that Big Jack had simply been concussed and would be returning to the jail on Sunday. “Well, that’s good news then,” I said. “Surely he’ll confirm that it was an accident.” “I don’t think so,” replied Doug. “He probably didn’t see anything either. However, as Big Jack will want to be involved with whatever his gang are planning for you, you’ll be safe until then.” I discovered that I wasn’t really very hungry and once we had returned to our cell, I asked Doug and Billy for their advice. Doug scratched his head thoughtfully. “I suppose you could talk to the warden and ask to be put into solitary confinement but he doesn’t work on the weekends so you’ll have to wait until Monday to make an appointment.” “Or you could pay another gang to provide protection for you,” added Billy helpfully. “But I don’t have any money on me,” I replied miserably. “Oh, you don’t need money,” said Billy. “They only deal in cigarettes and drugs.” “Thanks for nothing,” I said bitterly. “You two are a big help.” “I suppose you could always escape with me,” Doug said calmly. “I wasn’t intending to go for another couple of weeks but I suppose now is as good a time as any.” “Doug’s only got five weeks left on his sentence,” explained Billy, “so it’s time he

by John Kriesfeld got out.” I shook my head irritably. “That doesn’t make any sense. Why escape now when you’ve only got five weeks to go?” “I’ve been in jail for the past thirty years so this is the only life I know,” Doug replied patiently. “Here they feed me, give me a warm bed for the night, teach me various crafts, I’ve got plenty of mates around me and I get to play games or watch TV for most of the day. Where would I get that on the outside? Nobody’s going to give me a job and everybody will look down their noses at me because I’m an ex-con. I’ll just end up living under a bridge with a few other homeless men. It would be far more dangerous for me out there than in here. As an escaped prisoner, they’ll simply add another couple of years to my sentence when they catch me. I might even throw a brick through the window of a jewellery store and get a few extra years. I’m living my retirement plan right now. Why would I swap it for anything else?” “So do you have a tunnel already prepared for this great escape?” I asked, perhaps a touch sarcastically. Billy laughed. “You don’t need no tunnel to escape from here. This is a low security prison. All you need to do is apply for a work detail with Doug tomorrow and then simply walk away.” “There’s only one slight flaw,” I said slowly. “Won’t they also add time on to my sentence for escaping? Spending another couple of months in here is the last thing I want.” “There is that,” replied Doug slowly. “I’ve got it,” said Billy triumphantly. “When Doug escapes and you’re nowhere to be found, everybody will think you’ve gone with him. But if we find you a nice safe hiding place in the prison and kit you out with a blanket and a few supplies, you can lie low until Monday morning when you’re due to go back to court.” “That’s it,” chimed in Doug. “They can’t get you for escaping if you haven’t actually escaped and Big Jack and his gang won’t be looking for you because they will think you’ve gone with me. All we’ve got to do now is find you a nice safe hidey hole.” I shrugged in passive agreement. It was such a simple plan that I doubted anything could go wrong with it. By now you would have thought I’d have known better.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle Having Agnes as a friend is one thing but living with her was entirely different. I don’t think I could be any more kind-hearted if I tried, but even I was getting to the end of my niceness. Agnes was mopey and weepy and repetitive and I was going stir crazy. Thank goodness I had my new job to keep me out of the house several hours a day, several days a week. “I have spent all day being pleasant to people,” I told Agnes in the hope that she would pick up my subtle hint that I was just about out of pleasantness. Agnes looked surprised. “But that’s your job isn’t it? To be pleasant. I mean nobody wants a grumpy old woman as a customer in their shop, do they?” I bit my lip and tried to ignore her confrontational tone. “Firstly Agnes, you know I am never grumpy, and as for old, you should be careful making comments like that.” Agnes immediately burst into tears for the fourth time that day. “Right, I am popping out for a little while,” I said as I hastily grabbed my keys and bolted for the front door. Agnes barely looked up from her sopping wet, overused hanky on her lap. I had tried to stay out of all of this but I could no longer put up with this person my friend had become. She was driving me crazy. She was never interested in my day and most of the time she didn’t even bother brushing her hair or applying any makeup. She had ignored all of Fred’s calls and had not left the house once, and frankly, I was sick of it. I went around to her house and hammered on the door until Fred eventually opened it. He was also looking all red-eyed and miserable. “Not more misery,” I thought, but I soldiered on all the same. I stuck my foot in the door and growled, “Now listen here Fred, why on earth would you cheat on my good friend Agnes?” “Cheat on Agnes?” he croaked, wobbling as he said it, his eyes getting even more bloodshot. It was quite an unattractive look. “Yes Fred. She has been crying at my place for the past ten days because you can’t be faithful to her. You’re quite the rat.” Fred shook his head as he took a deep breath. “Merle, you’d better come in as I have something to say.” He was acting rather assertively so I did what he asked even though I still had plenty to say to him. Once we were inside, Fred turned to me and said, “I have never, nor will I ever, cheat on the love of my life.” “Oh, now I am confused,” I said sarcastically. “Do you mean cheat on Agnes or on Betsy Brathelwaight? Which one is the love of your life?” “Betsy Brathelwaight?” Fred almost choked on his own words. “Why on earth would you say that Merle?” “Well, isn’t she the one you have been sneaking around with behind poor Agnes’s back?” Fred suddenly looked relieved and almost smiled. “Oh, my goodness!” he said. “Is that what it’s all been about?” “I am sorry you got caught out Fred,” I snapped, “but it is a small town and when you go into other women’s homes and go out shopping with them, word gets around.” “Women? Shopping? I have never shopped with another woman since I have been with Agnes, and as for sneaking into women’s homes?” Fred spluttered, unable to complete his sentence. “Yes,” I replied smugly. “You have been caught out and it’s time you owned up to it. I’m afraid Agnes saw you with her own eyes.” Fred started to laugh hysterically as he collapsed onto the nearby couch. I was a little worried about my own safety. You do the right thing and decide to go out batting for your friend and suddenly you fall prey to the perpetrator. It’s a very common theme in the movies. I slowly backed up to the front door so I could make a quick getaway if needed. Fred stared up at me and said, “This is wonderful. I understand everything now.” “Good, good,” I said in a calming voice, worried about his next move. I never have trusted him. He looked up at the ceiling took another deep breath before looking back at me. “Oh Merle, I love you.”

I frowned at him in annoyance. “This is all too much, Fred. How many women would you like to cheat on Agnes with, you despicable man.” “Oh no Merle, not like that,” he laughed happily although he still had a wild look in his eyes. “Now that I understand why Agnes has left me, I’ll be able to fix it up in a jiffy.” I edged closer to the door just in case he was trying to lull me into a false sense of security. He patted the couch next him. “Sit down Merle, and let me explain. Betsy the baker, as she is known, has branched out into cake making. Agnes is having a very special birthday this year and I went to see Betsy to arrange for her to make Agnes a beautiful birthday cake. I went into her house because that’s where she makes her cakes and she has all of her pictures and sizes and prices.” He suddenly frowned thoughtfully. “But I never went shopping with her.” “You were seen together at the hardware shop Fred,” I said accusingly, happy that I had found a hole in his defence. Fred suddenly nodded. “Oh yes of course. We needed some wire to hold up the cake decoration and something to conceal the box on the top that will, well I will tell you now, will hold the ring that I am going to present to Agnes when I ask for her hand in marriage.” As much as I would like to try, convict and hang Fred, it did make sense. “Oh Merle, this is brilliant news. She does still love me. I must go around to your house immediately and explain everything, although I did want to surprise her with the ring.” Eager to get these two back together and get Agnes out of my house I said, “How about you go around now, while I go up the street. You can explain, propose and take her home.” Fred jumped out of his chair and ran to get his keys. I quickly hurried off before he could hug me for my match making skills. I waited for about an hour before heading home. Agnes had left a note on the kitchen bench. “Fred came around and it’s all sorted Merle. Thank you for your wonderful friendship, your support and your generosity. I will speak with you tomorrow. Oh, and I have some big news.” Her sopping wet hanky was still on the couch. As I went into the kitchen to fetch a pair of tongs, I wondered, why are relationships so confusing? Can anyone please explain? Anyone?

HARSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL What a stunning first week we have had at Harston Primary School. We have had fun in our ‘Creative Arts’ room where we played with our Lego. We went into our ‘Breakout’ room where we investigated new activities and we had sooo much fun outside in our sandpit and our beautiful garden that Mr H created. Our classroom has been one place where we have been learning and working very hard. The Golden Rule: “Treat others as you would like to be treated.” is our focus for the next few weeks. New Year, New people, New fun, New ideas. Introducing two new teachers — Myself, Kaz Batson, Acting Principal. I have taught in many schools across 2 states in Public and Private schools. I have a certificate in Gifted education amongst other skills. I am very excited about this new adventure. Ginette Cook is our second teacher. Her history is with early childhood and lecturing in this field at Latrobe University. Moving on from Covid and all that has and is happening we offer at Harston a unique, individualised schooling that caters for all needs and learning in beautiful surroundings with amazing resources. Our students have engaged in many fun things in the past week and a half. Here are some lovely pictures of our students.
