The redevelopment was funded by a $600,000 grant provided by the Victorian Government through the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program and 1.3 million from Greater Shepparton City Council. Community contributions were made to complete the fit out and furnishing of the new library and to date over $131,000 has been raised including a $100,000 contribution by the Federal Government through the Murray Darling Basin Economic Development Program. Works involved extending the building by 240m2 creating additional space and improved access to enable the library to provide a quality, modern public library service for the Tatura community. The winner of the Community Event of the Year was Rodney CWA for their Bushfire Relief Stalls. After the devastating Corryong/ Tintaldra Bushfires in early 2020, the Rodney CWA ladies rallied to assist their sister branch in Tintaldra. Through a street stall they raised much needed funds that assisted in providing local vouchers to those affected by the fires. The event not only directly benefited those most in need, but also injected funds back into the struggling businesses. The Rodney CWA Branch is the only Branch in the Goulburn Valley West region to have both a senior and junior branch and the only branch to have a life member. Cr. Seema Abdullah presented the award to Rodney CWA.

TATURA MUSEUM MURAL Tatura Museum “War Camps Mural” On Australia Day 26thJanuary 2021, the final strokes were made on the magnificent “War Camps Mural” on the eastern wall of the Tatura Museum. After seven days of extremely hot weather, Jimmy Dvate and assistant Justin created the imposing scene of the Internment and Prisoner of War Camps that were situated around the Waranga Basin south of Tatura. The scene shows the austerity and bleakness of the row upon row of huts with the watchtower and armed lookout guard. It blends into the bushland depicting a family camp scene from Camp 3, possibly a Templar family from Palestine. These internees often had beautiful gardens around their huts. Emerging over the trees is the unmistakable Dhurringile Mansion. It was also a place of Internment and later a POW camp. In the foreground a German POW is depicted arising from an escape tunnel dug from within the mansion cellars. Whacco, the pet cockatoo, perched in the gumtree was a camp mascot. The barb-wire entanglement in the foreground is a grim reminder of the security that existed during those grim war years. An enlarged coin on the right-hand side gives a close up of camp coinage. The Mural and adjacent alcove-collages were made possible by the generosity of two museum members. They we will be honoured on the 18th April when a special plaque will be unveiled. The Tatura Walks and Rides group, part of the Tatura Community Plan Committee, has been pursuing and planning the improvement and expansion footpaths and shared paths in Tatura since 2012. With input from members of this group, other community groups and interested citizens, we have looked at locations for new paths, “missing links”, pedestrian crossings, access improvements, drinking fountains and safe connections to other towns with the Goulburn Valley Trails, as well as the popular 10km path around Tatura. Working closely with Greater Shepparton City Council through the Community Plan programme, we have had quite a number of the suggestions acted on and now many more footpaths and shared paths allow us all to leave the car at home and walk, jog, ride or scoot around town, to the shops, to school and to our friends. Our latest updated map of suggested paths and missing links (etcetera) is now being prepared to submit to Council again. If you have any suggestions please feel free to contact Ross at sandalino@iinet.net.au or call 0407 845 247. The 10km shared circuit around Tatura has been a highpoint of the groups’ achievements. As a result of planning, promotion and encouragement by this group and affiliated groups, we have almost completed the 10km loop. The group has been integral in the continuation of the Crouching Emu path from Ferguson Road to Pyke Road, the connection into and through Northlinks, the McNamara Street connection to Cussen Park, the Lake Bartlett southern path network and the soon to be commenced O’Reilly Road path. The latter will allow the loop to be closed although we are still working towards the final stage connecting the Racecourse, the Men’s Shed and Murton Road to Dhurringile Road. Many other successful projects we have achieved over the last eight years include - involvement in the Jodie Ridges Memorial Trail to Shepparton, - providing some of the volunteer marshals for Tat200, - submissions to Shepparton Bike Strategies and - submissions for Walking / Cycling in Greater Shepparton booklets. As a group, we have directly applied to Council for funding of many of these projects ($512,000 to date) as well as grants from Tat200 ($14,000) and Tatura Lions Club ($1,000). We are so indebted to these organisations and groups for their generosity and shared vision. Tatura Walks and Rides has been very proactive over the last eight years and is always looking for enthusiastic new members to join. We meet the first Thursday of every second month from 6.00pm to 7.00pm (sharp!) at the Tatura Hotel (Middle Pub) unless Covid guidelines shift us to Zoom meetings. If you would like to be a part of this vibrant and exciting group, please feel free to contact Ross at sandalino@iinet.net.au or call 0407 845 247. Ross Musolino Tatura Walks and Rides

WILL LOSES HIS LOCKS At the peak of the pandemic lock downs, William Neave from the Rotary Club of Tatura decided, after five years of growing a luxuriant crop of hair, to do something positive for himself and the community by raising funds for kids with cancer and alopecia and by donating his crop to make wigs for patients undergoing medical treatments that cause hair loss. The Rotary Club enthusiastically adopted Will’s project after a very disappointing year of event cancellations and postponements. In December 2020 over twenty members and guests supported Will at a dinner in the Middle Pub, followed by a public hair chopping event in the beer garden. Removing hair for wigs is not a simple process and strict guidelines had to be followed to plait the hair into neat braided strands before being chopped. Will ascended the stage and the big chop was

BRIAN BEARD PLUMBING

assisted by several attendants. These included his mother Cheree and grandmother Carol, who are fellow Rotarians and expert hair braiders. After the braided strands were tied off three stylish young men from the SkySalon in Vaughan Street, Shepparton flew into action and carefully removed the strands and created a new, very stylish Will. Although he was proud of his long hair, Will said this event marks an end to a dark period of anxiety and depression in his life and he intends to move on to much better times. The Rotary club of Tatura has got right behind Will in this great initiative. At last count William’s Great Hair Chop event has raised almost $1500. ONE TREE PER CHILD Greater Shepparton City Council is currently seeking interest from residents to participate in the One Tree Per Child Project, by identifying suitably available roadside reserve areas with the capacity for planting local native indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses. One Tree Per Child is a global project which aims to plant one indigenous plant for every child within the Municipality aged under 16. The program commenced in 2016 and has seen a total of 96,000 trees planted across Greater Shepparton. Greater Shepparton City Council’s target for 2021 is to plant 25,500 plants. One Tree Per Child will provide opportunities for every child in Greater Shepparton to see native plants grow for the benefit of the community and the environment. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Councillor Kim O’Keeffe said “We would like to hear from residents who think native vegetation plantings can occur along their roadsides owned by Council, which have limited services/utilities. The aim of planting along our roadsides is to connect biodiversity corridors providing key habitats for our local fauna and to bring back our native vegetation, please let us know your suggestions,” said Cr O’Keeffe “The sites will be assessed by Council with consideration given to the Road Management Plan requirements, road safety, maintenance access to the site, protection or enhancement of existing vegetation and proximity to service assets. Once approved, plantings would occur

ZERO CARBON GROUP TATURA

from April through to September this year,” Cr O’Keeffe said. Considerations include: • The edge of the planting area should be at least 9 metres from the centre of the road and 3 metres from a landholder’s fence/ boundary (minimum 12 metres from road centre line to fence = 1 row of plants) • Rural areas/outside of any township/ populated residential areas (beyond 80km zone) • Minimum 80 metres from road intersections. • Minimum 20 metres clearway from driveways and gates • Will not disturb high value existing vegetation • Avoidance of other infrastructure, including underground cables Council will continue plant maintenance including watering, weeding and mowing for one year after initial planting. A majority of the species planted have been indigenous shrubs and groundcovers that have been largely cleared from our region. The aim is to restore woodland species to provide habitat for woodland birds and other native fauna. Let’s plant a tree for every child and enjoy watching the trees grow as our children grow! To express your interest or for enquiries on this, or for general information regarding the One Tree Per Child Program, please contact Council on (03) 5832 9700 or email OneTreePerChild@ shepparton.vic.gov.au

A Zero Carbon Tatura (ZCT) group has been formed, to guide the town to transition to zero carbon emissions by 2030. A Zero Carbon Transition Plan is a considered process to transition from polluting fossil fuels to a low carbon economy, with community benefit in mind. By actively transitioning our energy sources from fossil fuels to renewable energy, and using less energy overall, residents, businesses and industry can save money while mitigating the effects of climate change. Tatura’s Zero Carbon Tatura Transition Plan will guide the transition process, and incorporate the residents and businesses of the entire 3616 postcode. ZCT recently received a Sustainability Grant from the Greater Shepparton City Council, which will be used to develop communications materials for the Plan development and implementation. Many cost-effective opportunities to transition are available to households, businesses, industry and farming. These opportunities include the sectors of Energy, Transport, Waste, Buildings, Agriculture and Land Use, and Industry. The ZCT group is auspiced by GV Community Energy, a not-for-profit company, and includes representatives from community groups including Transition Tatura, Tatura Community House, and the Tatura Community Plan. More information to come in next month’s Bulletin – contact Terry on 5824 2642 for further details in the meantime.

BRUCE ANDERSON SCHOLARSHIP The Bruce Anderson Scholarship is now available for first year students from Tatura and surrounding districts for university studies in 2021. A one thousand dollar grant is available to assist a student with living expenses while studying. Dr Bruce Anderson (1936 to 2009) was a vet in the Tatura district for thirty five years, serving the rural communities in both private practice and in the public service. He also served the community as an active member and passionate supporter of the Rotary Club of Tatura. Bruce is continuing his support for the community with his bequest, which funds this scholarship.

Rachel with some of her art

LOCAL ARTIST HOLDS DOOKIE EXHIBITION Rachel Doller grew up on the family farm near Harston, and fondly remembers keeping cool on those baking hot summer days with a dip in the local irrigation channel. ‘Swimming pools with blue, crystal-clear water seemed like something you only saw on TV or imagined on a tropical holiday in a far-off location’ she says. With an Advanced Diploma of Arts and Diploma of Graphic Design behind her, Rachel moved to Fremantle (Western Australia), where she worked as a graphic designer, and went on to establish a successful art business and win several awards for her work. She has recently returned to her home town of Tatura, where she now enjoys having a pool in her own back yard! The Covid lockdown last year provided Rachel with the opportunity to reflect on the joys of a back yard swimming pool, resulting

in a series of ‘bold, graphic works on paper and canvas that are as invigorating as that first dive below the aquamarine surface.’ ‘My pool compositions are all about the escape but also about the joy of swimming. My mixed media works are generally created from a bird’s eye view using acrylic paint, oil pastel, and cut paper and they feature colours from blow-up floaty things, green grass, crisp light, sharp shadows and blue skies. These colours express the fantasy of the escape. They’re hyperreal and such a contrast to the muddy waters of channel no. 7!’ Rachel’s exhibition, “Contentment” opens at Dookie Artists Tree gallery on Sunday 14 March, from 1pm-4pm. The exhibition can be seen Friday to Sunday, from 10am to 5pm from 12-28 March. Dookie Artists Tree is located at 64 Mary Street, Dookie.

Bruce Anderson Scholarship for First Year University Study in 2021 For students from Tatura and surrounding districts $1000 Assistance

The Rotary Club of Tatura is encouraging all first year university students from Tatura and the surrounding districts, including Mooroopna, Kyabram, Murchison and Rochester, to apply for this scholarship. Selection is based on all of the following criteria: financial need, academic merit and record of community involvement. In 2019 Lizzy Smith from Tatura received the scholarship to assist with the study of Science at Melbourne University. She said the financial assistance allowed her greater freedom to be more involved with extra-curricular oncampus activities in her spare time. The application procedure is reasonably simple, requiring proof of enrolment in a first year degree course, a resume with VCE results and three references. For more information and application forms email sj.lolicato@gmail.com or call 04 0092 0467.

HUSSLN AUTO DETAILING Cam Scorey, known affectionately by friends as Hussln, has opened his auto detailing business at the corner of Hogan and Ross Streets in Tatura. He is a Merrigum boy, born in Shepparton, spent most of his growing years moving around with his father's work, including five years in New Guinea, moving back to the Goulburn Valley at the age of 16 years. Hussln has always loved cars, grew up helping his father with his vehicles from a young age. He spent a few years in Perth and when first there needed a job so started detailing. This was where he met his wife, who he now has an 8 year old daughter with. Hussln has been in business coming up on 11 years now, having worked from home, mobile for a while and also shared a shed with a mechanic in Merrigum. He is delighted to now have a bigger building, with bigger opportunities of servicing the community more. He will always wish to continue to offer the same old fashioned service he always has but will also branch out now that he has a bigger facility, adding new services in the future. He already gives premium detailing, machine polishing and paint protection for your car, bike, boat, caravan or anything with paint for that matter. In fact he is Regional Victoria's exclusive installation centre for Modesta and is one of only 12 in the entire country. Modesta prides itself on quality workmanship and also customer service, choosing who is invited to join their program. Those installers in Australia are a good tight knit group and with the wealth of knowledge to lean on Hussln is able to offer a better service to his customers. He prides himself on machine polishing and paint protection. One wonders if there is anyone else in the area who can do what he can with machine polishing. Complimentary pick up and drop off is available if a customer cannot organize his or her own ride. He is registered, insured, a member of the International Detailing Association and has good security in the building so your vehicle is safe while with him. In fact, your car will be treated like it's his own. Hussln puts in the work, provides clarity and goes out of his way to make sure his customers are happy. He is totally honest and wants customers for life. Hussln loves the location he is in now, which is why he jumped on the perfect location when it became available and is here for the long run, wanting to keep that small community vibe and be involved and support locals and other local businesses. In fact, he has lots of knowledge and is more than willing to share the information. He likes being a valued member of society, as well as educating and helping younger business owners. I get the impression he just likes helping people. Outside of work Hussln loves his music and going to concerts, back when that was possible of course. He is Vice-President of the Merrigum Football Club, one of the organizers for the "Wheels at the Gum" car show and also part of the Merrigum Community Group. As with most fathers, time spent with his wife and daughter is most important. He has built and modified cars over the years and had some featured in Street Magazine. He loves anything from 1930 to 1980, be they Ford, Chevrolet, Hot Rods, Low Riders, Mini Trucks.....he loves them all! He has a passion for being the best person he can be, with work, family and friends and wants to have pride in his life. Not better than others but just the best version of himself. He loves what he does. He is constantly learning and training to further his knowledge of all things detailing. A true craftsman never stops learning and evolving in their craft. He has told me "My reputation is on my quality. I'm not going to sell a product I don't 100% agree with. If you purchase from Hussln - be it product or service - be assured it is quality". Science lesson

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL The school holidays certainly went by fast. It was great to be able to start 2021 face to face. Wednesday 10th February saw our first incursion with Harston Primary coming over for the day to Dhurringile. Each Wednesday, the Harston students participate in an online science lesson hosted by the Discovery Centre in Bendigo. Our students joined in with the session about floating and sinking. The students had to predict which of the objects that they were given would sink or float. Some items, like the ball of paper floated initially before sinking once it became waterlogged. The most interesting object was the packaging beads. As they are made of corn starch and designed to biodegrade, they dissolved in the water quite quickly. After recess, the Harston students joined in with the Dhurringile students for their weekly music lesson which is hosted by The Music Bus. Ben, our music teacher, has been teaching us about the elements of music as well as note values. Lisa Wilson

How many of you remember the days when a lot thought it funny when someone said the moon was made of cheese? Well even funnier was a fellow from Mt. Gambier in South Australia who called into the Adelaide Truth office in the early 1960’s with an even more startling claim. Wearing a hat and suit, albeit they were a bit baggy on him, and carrying what seemed to be a heavily laden cardboard luggage case as were around in those days, he asked for the editor. He said he had drawn up a scheme that would ensure earth would never go without drinking water ever again and in his case were the drawings to verify it. The editor, Marty Ryan, had seen a bit in his day including a tour in England and beyond as a pilot on the Lancaster Bombers. Sadly, he lost one eye because of a hit on an aircraft he was in, so he was not shy of talking to “interesting” people. Anyway, we told our visitor we would see if Mr. Ryan was in but quickly ducked into his office and told him we thought we had a “weirdo” out front and quickly gave Marty a rundown on what it might be about. “Okay send him in but you blokes (two of us) stay here in case”. In walked the visitor toting his case and opened it on Ryan’s desk immediately sending anything else on it to the floor. Then with a flourish he produced drawings…it looked like a hundred of them and these he said would show how he could give earth an eternity of drinkable water… wait for it.... piped down from Mars via canals. Ryan tried many times to say or start with “but” … no good our Mt Gambian was on a roll and clearly had been talking to little green men who had more knowledge than we earthlings. After what seemed like an hour Ryan hit the stop button and said, “Look leave this with me, and we will contact you soon.” Yeah right! But it appeased E.T’s mate who smiled, got up and left and never left a telephone number or address to contact him. It did make the next edition of Adelaide Truth, but I think it may have been a report on the funny or cartoon pages. Postscript: Adelaide Truth did not survive much longer. It and the Tasmanian Truth were quietly put to bed (finished) by Rupert Murdoch who put the savings into a new newspaper…. The Australian. I was absorbed onto the daily afternoon newspaper the Adelaide News and then wrote for his weekend paper The Sunday Mail. Finally, for this edition congrats to those responsible for our new library. It is very modern, very spacious and I compare it with the library I used in Forbes… a heritage building and so much older than our new one and yet Forbes has a population of almost 10,000. Dennis Booth

GV TREE GROUP Billy Buttons or Drumsticks? When I decided to do an article on Billy Buttons I thought it would be a pretty quick and simple article to write. How wrong was I! I discovered I don’t even really know what Billy Buttons are. It turns out that the hard yellow round flowers I call Billy Buttons (and I guess many other people do too) are in fact Drumsticks (Pycnosorus globosus) and the real Billy Button is (Craspedia variabilis). The Billy Button, although similar to the Drumstick, has a flatter flower head more like a button. However, it gets even more complicated because the Pycnosorus & the Craspedia genus are related and have been grouped together, then separated. Then you add in 6 species of Pycnosorus & 23 species of Craspedia and all of a sudden my simple belief of one flower called a Billy Button has well and truly gone out the window. So after confusing you all with my gibberish we have several boxes of very healthy Pycnosorus globosus ready to go. They are a perennial, flowering year after year and of course the flowers last for ages. They like a moist well drained soil but can do well in heavy soils too. They are drought tolerant and like full to part sun. Planted together in clumps or in a row you will get more than just flowers as the silver/grey woolly leaves will provide a nice contrast to most other plants. Conditions over the last month have been ideal for growing and our trees have responded. Most of our trees are ready to go, but unless you’re prepared to water them before winter, waiting another month to plant may give you the best results. If anyone has expertise in the area of Billy Buttons come down on Tuesday morning and enlighten me please. Good growing Ash

SATURDAYS IN THE MAUDE STREET MALL Greater Shepparton City Council will host a range of activities every Saturday in the Maude Street Mall. Kids Space returns to the CBD on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, alternating with Live Music Saturday’s on the 2nd and 4th weekend of each month. The initiatives to bring activities back in the CBD come as Greater Shepparton City Council begins delivering select, COVID safe events again. Director Sustainable Development Geraldine Christou says it’s a great initiative for families in the region. “Previously, we hosted Kids Space in the Maude Street Mall. The activation was put on hold due to COVID. We are very excited to be

bringing Kids Space back to the Maude Street Mall in a COVID safe way. It’s a fantastic activation that encourages creativity and hours of fun for the kids.” “We are also launching Live Music Saturday’s. After the recent success of Roving Music in the CBD, we are excited to bring live music back to the Mall. Artists will perform in the Maude Street Mall from 10am – 2pm on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. It’s a great way to get the wonderful talent of the Shepparton Region involved,” says Ms Christou. Kids Space and Live Music Saturday’s are free and run from 10am – 2pm on their scheduled weekends in the Maude Street Mall. CWA HARSTON BRANCH Many happy years have been spent at the Tatura Gallery Café, where the Harston Branch members held our monthly CWA meeting, we appreciate the service we received, and thank Kerryn and Neville for their thoughtfulness, time and great food. Due to the uncertainty of the future of the business, Harston members have needed to find another meeting venue. Mrs. Freda Clement, being a very good lawn bowler and the CWA Harston Secretary, suggested we could meet at the Tatura Bowls club rooms, until a suitable venue was decided, this proved very satisfactory in as much as our next meeting will take place there on Monday March the 8th 2021. Please note, we must bring our own lunch. Harston Branch members held their February meeting at the Tatura Bowls clubrooms. The meeting was chaired by Vice President Mrs. Mary McGrath, as Mrs. Glenys Eberle is unwell, as a few of our ladies are, the rest of us are just plain sick of Covid. Speaking of; during this Covid lockdown, Our

Secretary was very busy keeping members informed by email and newsletters on the goings on at Head Office. A new book has been released called Thrifty Household available by contacting a CWA member. Other members spoke of how they kept themselves busy, knitting, and sewing also ringing around fellow members to ask were they okay? By the time the Bulletin is printed, the Goulburn Valley West Group will have held its AGM and Annual meeting at the Harston Hall, with State Representative, Mrs. Viviane Chemali. The G.V.West Group Luncheon will be held at the Royal Mail Hotel in Mooroopna on a Saturday in March. Women Walk the World fundraiser is being held on 29th April. As the year progresses we all hope to be out and about more, with an end to facemasks. Mrs. Marilyn Pell Harston Branch

TOOLAMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL A sense of normality greeted students, families, and staff as we resumed for the 2021 school year. Once again, our staff went above and beyond to ensure their learning spaces were organised and vibrant in readiness for the year ahead. Our new school leaders have been elected and were presented with their badges at assembly on Monday 1st February. All students in leadership positions will work hard to ensure that each day is a great learning experience. Due to a reduction in student numbers for

2021 we have moved back from eight to seven classrooms. In doing so we had bid Robert Kirby farewell as he looks to continue his career at St Augustine's in Kyabram. All the best Rob! Our teaching and learning teams have been working together to ensure that we can move along our students after a trying year in 2020. All things going well, we hope to see our school community at a Welcome Picnic on Thursday 18th February. Craig Thompson

MURCHISON PRIMARY SCHOOL Murchison Primary School is very proud of the programs we are able to offer our school community. Our After School Care program, run by the talented Sharon Reilly, really helps out our working parents. So far this year the children have been enjoying the new additions to the room along with making Jelly fish as part of a ‘Beach’ theme. As Sharon really tries to give the students involved a voice, they were asked for input on possible weekly themes. A few themes we are now looking forward to are Bush Week, Aussie animals' week, Cooking week, Easter week, Train week just to name a few. Please keep in mind, our school also offers before school supervision from 8 a.m. If you’re interested in using either of these services, “ We pride ourselves good please contact the school and we’d on be happy “ We pride ourselves on to help. old fashioned service” Ellie French

TATURA HILLTOP BOWLS

A ONE TOWN PENNANT BOWLS TEAM The 2020-2021 Goulburn Valley Bowls Division pennant season saw the Tatura Bowls Club and Hilltop Bowls Club merge their players into a "One Town Tatura" pennant side to be known as "Tatura Hilltop" for Weekend and Midweek pennant bowls. In past years there had been a desire for some to form a "one town club" and thus be a more competitive and stronger force in Goulburn Valley pennant and so far this season the results are being reflected in the high standings at all levels that the merger club is competing in. As at round 12 with just 2 rounds left to complete in the home and away season, Tatura Hilltop have 9 sides out of the 11 competing sides featured in the final four on the bowls ladders. Midweek pennant has 4 teams involved in Tuesday Midweek bowls with 3 sides currently sitting in 4th position on the ladder. Weekend pennant has 7 sides with 1 team 2nd, 4 teams 3rd and 1 in 4th position. There is no guarantee of ultimate success but certainly the merger club is now a force to be reckoned with and will certainly feature in many finals this year.

Ring the shop on 5824 3059 to inquire about our opening hours. Currently open weekdays only.

New Stock Arriving Daily

One feature of the merger that has enabled the process to successfully take place has been that both clubs still operate independently and importantly retain their own club history. There have been a number of administrative processes that have been necessary for the merger to proceed successfully and this is working well between the two clubs. Many committed members have worked diligently to ensure that the Tatura Hilltop merger becomes a success story. Members of the two individual clubs have access to each other's club facilities for training and pennant matches are shared between the two venues. Through generous sponsorship by Trevaskis Engineering, Merritt Funeral Services and Planright, the members have been fitted out with new uniforms featuring the Tatura Hilltop colours of red, white and blue with a subtle Bulldog emblem featured. Go Bulldogs. John Crilly

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE Training If you see us out on a Monday night after 7:30pm do not worry, you may have seen us out and about in the community of late training. This is something we do regularly and is nothing to cause concern. If anything, you can rest assured we like to move around town to familiarise ourselves with any conditions or layouts in your area to reduce risks in a real emergency. Community Support We are currently planning our community engagement for 2021. If you have an event you would like us to take part in, please contact Amber on 0474092160 or via our Facebook page. If you have a community group or club that would like an information session (either on a topic of our choice or yours) let us know. As with everything though. These are dependent on COVID-19 restrictions at the time. Fire Season We have had a few urban grass fires of late. This is a reminder that even though we live in a Town with a low Bush Fire Risk, grass fires are a real risk to our community. Understanding Rural Grassfire Risk • Grassfires can start and spread quickly and are extremely dangerous. • Grassfires can travel up to 25 km per hour and pulse even faster over short distances. • Grass is a fine fuel and burns faster than bush or forests. • Grassfires tend to be less intense and produce fewer embers than bushfires, but still generate enormous amounts of radiant heat. • The taller and drier the grass, the more intensely it will burn. You can reduce your risk by deciding what buildings or assets you need to protect from grassfire. Reduce the height and proximity of grass to these buildings by • Slashing • Mowing • Grazing • Spraying and using herbicide

• Creating fuel breaks by removing all fuel (vegetation) down to the soil If you live next to grassland and a grassfire starts • Walk at least two streets back from the fire. • If you live two or three streets away from grassland and a grassfire starts, stay where you are – grassfires are unlikely to spread into built up areas. • Never drive if you can see smoke or fire. Thick smoke will make it hard to see and traffic jams and accidents are likely. • Keep the roads clear for the emergency services. If you need any advice, or would like information on joining the Brigade please contact The Tatura Fire Station via our Facebook Page or find out more here https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au Amber Wymer Community Safety Coordinator Tatura Fire Brigade

PROBUS CLUB

QUIZ answers

The Probus Club of Tatura had its first meeting for 11 months on 28 January. Phyl Mactier gave us a very interesting insight into the autobiography she has written while in lockdown. We had 29 members present who all enjoyed the get together after so long without meetings.

1c – Diamonds 2b – Willem Janzoon 3d – Alpha Centauri 4b – Beatrix Potter 5a – Rabat 6a b c d – They all weigh the same – 1 tonne 7a – England 8c – Alaska 9c – 35% 10b – Puccini

The Committee intend to try and have interesting things for our members to do over and above the meetings, the first being a get together for dinner at the Chinese restaurant in Shepparton on 18 February. Now that we are able to meet, a guest speaker will be organized for each meeting, and there will also be a segment of Member Behind the Badge, when we get to know a little bit about our various members. We welcome new members to our Club which meets on the 4th Thursday of each month, 10am at the Community House in Tatura. Further information from Ev Leahy 0408 241 712 Phyl Mactier with her book

Scoring. 0–2. Struggle Street. What a wonderful attitude to life you must have. I’m sure nothing much worries you or upsets you as you sail along on a wave of blissful ignorance. They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing but you don’t even have that. 3-5. Bland Street. You’re just another face in the faceless crowd. Mediocre, unexceptional, average, beige, I think Bland Street says all we need to know about you. However, you need to be aware that you are quite dangerous to others as a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. 6-7. Above Average (sort of). You are to be commended on achieving a good score as a well-rounded knowledge was required to answer these questions correctly. Go you good thing! 8-9. Smarty Pants. An excellent result because there were a couple of tricky questions this month and although you probably attained this score through a couple of lucky guesses, it’s still a worthwhile achievement. You are probably the cream of the crop because I’m not sure that anybody got these all correct. 10. Genius. All ten correct? Really? You should either buy a Tattslotto ticket while your luck is still in or you really are a certified genius. John Kriesfeld

RODNEY BRANCH CWA Our Junior Branch members held their first meeting on 4th February and were very excited to be back together again, as other than their Christmas break up in December their last meeting was in March 2020. It was panic stations for a while as on the morning of their meeting we found out that due to another outbreak of the virus in Melbourne numbers were restricted to 15 indoors. As we have 15 Junior members and generally five members of our Senior CWA branch help at their meetings, we had a problem. A ring around to the parents of our Juniors ascertained that several were unable to come due to other commitments, so we were able to go ahead with 15 Junior and Senior members in total. The girls were instructed on knitting a bow with added embellishments and most will return next month with their knitting completed. Rodney CWA members

Recipes

PEANUT BISCUITS This is a basic biscuit recipe that one can add almost anything to. I have used up stale peanuts (rather than throw them out), which turned out really well.

Ingredients: 3/4 Cup Sugar 125g Butter 1 Cup Self Raising Flour 1/3 Cup Plain Flour 1 Egg Method: Cream butter and sugar together. Add egg and beat until fluffy. Stir in sifted dry ingredients and mix well. (This is where I added the peanuts, which I had crushed). Roll pastry into balls. Place on baking tray and flatten with fork. Our Senior Branch was thrilled to be acknowledged on Australia Day with winning the award for Community Event of the Year for our Bush Fire Relief Street Stall. Our Secretary Janette Mason and Gwen Ranson (a Life member of Rodney Branch) accepted the award on behalf of our members. Congratulations go to Kaye Watson for the well-deserved award of Citizen of the Year and to Phil Eberle son of Harston CWA member Glenys being the Guest Speaker via Zoom. The Street Stall was held in front of IGA on Friday 28th February 2020 to raise funds for those affected by the Bush Fires in the Corryong/Tintaldra area. The amazing amount of over $2,000 was raised from the cooking, craft and plants made/donated by members and also by individual members giving monetary donations. The money raised was sent direct to the Tintaldra CWA branch (our sister branch) and they bought gift vouchers from local businesses which they distributed to those impacted by the fires this also helped the local businesses who were suffering as well. For details on all our branch activities or if you are interested in attending one of our meetings or functions contact our Secretary, Janette Mason on 0408 194 638. Fun times at the Cubby House

CUBBY HOUSE NEWS The cubby offers a personalised, family friendly and fun childcare service. The staff look forward to welcoming new families considering transitioning their little one into childcare. Tarja, our director, is a passionate childcare worker and delights in seeing the children grow and develop. The program this term is based around farming and animals, something that the children love. Also, we are thrilled to be able to visit the library again, which is a short walk through the community house. Children have also experienced “cooking in the community house kitchen”, an activity they loved! Our childcare cares for a maximum of fifteen 0-6 year olds per session and have offered this

friendly, nurturing service to the families of Tatura and surrounds for 35 years. The service accepts casual bookings which may just be for a few hours or permanent bookings for every session. The Cubby is a registered Child Care Subsidy provider You and your child/children are very welcome to come and spend some time at “The Cubby”. MURCHISON AUSTRALIA DAY 2021 Due to Covid restrictions this year, Australia Day celebrations were not a certainty. However, the Murchison Australia Day Committee was given the green light to hold the planned event at the swimming pool. Despite a rainy start 150 people attended the event, starting with a sausage sizzle cooked by SES volunteers. Complementary hot drinks were provided by Vicki Hamilton and Lara Smith from Vicki’s popular coffee van. Mr Bruce Smith, President Australia Day Committee, welcomed guests including Cr Seema Abdullah from Shepparton City Council. Cr Abdullah presented the official Australia Day Awards. Peta Brown, Secretary Australia Day Committee, co-ordinated the days’ proceedings. In his welcome, Bruce acknowledged the Traditional Owners of the land and elders’ past, present and emerging. He also thanked the many local sponsors of the event. Singer/song writer Bec Hance entertained the crowd, followed by the Affirmation led by Natasha Puts, student at Murchison Primary School. The Raising of the National Flag was performed by Grant Livesay and Oscar Harrison (Dhurringile Primary) as well as Lori Bathman and Daija Lavea (Murchison Primary) along with Mr Tino Catania (2020 Citizen of the Year). Guest speaker and community resident, Donna Maslin, spoke about her past and present life growing up and living in Murchison and her career in the Australian Federal Police Force spanning over 37 years. Donna also presented the winners of the Children’s Writing and Colouring awards with a plaque, a framed certificate and a book voucher. Junior guest speaker, Christopher Brown, gave a speech about the Country Fire Authority. Second Junior guest speaker, Georgia Lamb’s topic was Covid and why Murchison is a great place to live. Both speakers were presented with movie tickets. The Young Citizen of the Year Award went to Bree McLarty for her initiative of ‘Spoonville’ during the 2020 Covid lockdown. 2021 Citizen of the Year was awarded to Bruce Smith, who has dedicated his time to the community since moving from Nathalia 11 years ago. Bruce was surprised by the award and thanked those who nominated him. At the days end, Bruce commended the many volunteers, who he noted are the true winners of these events. Thanks to Julie & David Weidenbach and Alan Rosser for donating prizes for the Christmas Lights Competition and to Glenys & Derek Pearson for donating prizes for the Photo Competition. And a big thanks to all the participants. Anyone interested in volunteering for the Murchison Australia Day Committee can contact Peta Brown 0420 308 360 or Lisa Niglia (Public Relations).

TRAVELS WITH BARRY by John Kriesfeld

Barry and I spent a week in Hong Kong in 1975 and the thing that stands out the most in my mind is the memory of just how underprepared we were for the bargaining power and subtle but firm insistence of the local shop-keepers. At that time in Australia, a price was a price, and it was considered rude to try and knock a few dollars off an item. We would venture tentatively into a shop in Hong Kong and ask about a certain item, knowing we would invariably be on the wrong end of any deals we agreed to. For example, my mother wanted me to buy her a jade ornament, so I went into a well-presented jewellery shop and was immediately accosted, which is probably the wrong word but it certainly felt like it, by a nice old lady with a beaming smile. She could probably smell my Australian dollars hidden protectively behind two layers of zipped up pockets. “Watch out for pickpockets,” we were warned on several occasions before we departed on our trip. The kindly old lady then offered us the choice of a cup of tea or a cold beer while she insisted that we sit down while we waited for our beverage to arrive. “You don’t have to buy anything,” she kept saying. “You just sit and relax.” Despite the occasional horror story about rude Australians travelling overseas, we were actually a very polite and well-mannered country in 1973 and the Hong Kong traders played on this for all it was worth. Once we sat down and accepted a drink, we pretty much felt like we were obliged to repay the hospitality by buying something from their shop. As I wanted to buy a jade ornament, we accepted the offer of a drink and sat down, and were thereby trapped in the spider’s web. Two beautiful young ladies appeared from nowhere with our drinks and proceeded to

hover around us making encouraging noises in Chinese as the old lady produced several jade ornaments from a display cabinet. Although I had done a little research on jade ornaments in order to work out a price range, I had no idea as to the true value of the pieces that the old lady was placing before me. I finally settled on a ballet dancer figurine that I thought my mother would like and asked how much it was. The amount that she told me was far higher than I expected and I suppose at this stage the normal Chinese negotiation would consist of indignant gestures, feigned laughter at the ridiculous amount and discussions about the shop-keepers family lineage. The high figure was obviously the starting price for serious negotiation. However, as I said at the start, in Australia a price was a price and we had no experience of negotiating a more satisfactory figure. So, I just shook my head, said it was too much and stood up to leave. “What price you pay then?” asked the old lady as she moved to stand in front of me. Now I was well and truly snookered. I didn’t want to insult her by offering a price that was too low and I didn’t want to pay one that was too high. Barry was no help as he had drifted off to look at gold bracelets with one of the shop assistants. I finally mumbled a figure that I thought was reasonable and the old lady simply stared at me, shock clearly written across her face. I wasn’t sure what to do next but the old lady quickly recovered, shrugged her shoulders and said, “Okay. You drive hard bargain. I sell for that price.” In my heart I knew that I’d paid far too much but I was an amateur up against a hardened professional so I paid the money, took possession of the figurine and then watched as Barry also paid far too much for his gold bracelet, although

he did actually attempt to bargain with the attractive young shop assistant. “We need to take lessons in negotiations,” I muttered to Barry as we left the shop. “Speak for yourself,” replied Barry as he held up his wrist to show off his new gold bracelet. “I got a great deal.” Hong Kong during that period was a shopper’s paradise. Even though I knew we could have beaten down the price further on the many items that we bought if we had the confidence to haggle the prices down to rock bottom, everything we bought was still far cheaper than what they would have cost in Australia. Barry and I even bought top quality leather coats which we designed ourselves. Barry designed a snappy, minimalistic brown leather coat which he wore with pride for many years. I, on the other hand, having no great fashion sense, designed a futuristic, black leather coat with wide lapels and extravagant pockets that would have put a rock star to shame. I think I wore it twice upon return to Australia but quickly consigned it to the back of the wardrobe after receiving many strange looks and muttered comments from friends and family. China was closed off to Australians in the 1970’s but a guide took us to a lookout at the Chinese border and we peered with great interest at the Chinese border guards as they peered back at us through binoculars. We spoke with the locals about how they would manage when England eventually handed Hong Kong back to the Chinese but they confidently told us they weren’t concerned, as the booming Hong Kong economy and the benefits of its international currency would be of such importance to China that they wouldn’t dare risk destroying it. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER 2021

Ruth McCracken

Matters My hearty thanks to all concerned with the great Bulletin. It was so good to read about all the things organised by the people of Tatura which were very successful. Our very successful Lions Club can certainly get things done. The residents of Moyola can help a little too. Over the last two weeks we have made two batches of apricot jam to sell and use. Of course our wonderful Carmel has a lot to do with it. We have fun and laughter as well. We also play Bingo (for chocolates!).

Our next project is to make some batches of tomato relish. At Moyola every resident has a birthday cake of their choice made for them. The cakes are marvelous thanks to our kitchen staff. Ruth McCracken Ruth will be providing us with an insight into life at Moyola with an update each month. – Thanks Ruth

By Garry Disher Constable Paul Hirschhausen runs a one-man police station in the dry farming country south of the Flinders Ranges. He’s still new in town, but the community activities – welfare checks, working bees – are starting to pay off. Now Christmas is here. Apart from a grass fire, two boys stealing a ute, and Brenda Flann entering the front bar of the put without exiting her car, Hirsch’s life has been peaceful. Then he’s called to a strange, vicious incident in Kitchener Street. And Sydney police ask him to check on a family living on a forgotten back road outside town. Suddenly it doesn’t look like a season of goodwill at all. Well this certainly was different. A first novel by Disher and hopefully more to come. His writing reminded me of Joy Dettman’s books. Very down to earth with brilliant characters. Kerry Gardner

TATURA BOWLS Tatura Bowls Club's Jason Carter, a triple club champion (2007, 2014 and 2021) reached the final of the Goulburn Valley Bowls Division's Men's Singles Champion of Champions event and will have the match played and decided by the time that the Bulletin is published. Carter in the knockout finals was successful against Rob Smith (Nagambie), Andy Houston (Euroa) and Noel Reddrop (Kyabram) and is to play Tallygaroopna's Club Champion Brett Gunning in the Grand Final. Jason Carter has shown plenty of ability in his bowling career for he has managed to amass numerous awards in his 25 plus year bowling career. Early success aged 29 years and at a high level was in 2000 when he took out the Under 35's GVBA Singles Championship and in the following year won the RVBA Group 5 U35's Singles Championship. In 2002 he was a member of the Group 5 Champion 4's and in 2010 GVBA Men's 4's. At a club local level 3 club championships and success in the 21Up, 100Up, 2 Bowls Championship, and club pairs demonstrates that the Tatura Bowls Club has a worthy representative challenger in this year's Champion of Champions final event. Tatura has not had a club member successful in the Champion of Champions event since Peter Campbell in 1995, with Campbell winning again along with the Group 5 Championship and State Selection the following year. Jason, your fellow club members wish you excellent bowling. Jason's capabilities don't just stop with his lawn bowls skills, for he has applied himself at the club level being a committeeman, bar manager and, along with John Evans, maintains the two Tatura bowls greens, considered by many as the best lawn greens in the competition. TATURA ART NEEDS YOU! The Tatura Community Plan Committee is looking at putting together a sub- committee to look at “Tatura Public Art” for the town. This group will be looking at how Tatura can benefit through Sculptures, Murals and the like and what might be needed to build some more artistic flair into the town’s landscape. Many hands are needed for this potential group with a mixture of artistic members along with members who love art and members who like implementing things. Skills in this area would be good but not essential. These could be organisational, good communication, the enjoyment in being part of making a difference or all of these. Creating a mix of community members with a passion to get things moving across Tatura is the aim and we would like to see things start. Putting ideas together, getting agreement and the sourcing of funds to make it real is what is proposed. To kick this committee off or gauge interest a meeting is planned for Mid-March with a time, date and venue to be confirmed now that we have had new Covid based changes applied. This will be communicated once confirmed via the Town facebook site, word of mouth and direct contact. Watch for an advert or email Carl on carlw@gbcma.vic.gov.au .

The Bulletin supports locals, for locals, by locals

Greater Shepparton City Council understands and acknowledges the impact the cancellation of events at the Tatura Park Exhibition and Equestrian Complex due to the coronavirus situation has had on the local Tatura Community. As well as the economic advantages these events positively impact the community - the benefits on the wellbeing of participants, organisers and the community are immeasurable. Council wants to reassure you that we are continually working with venue hirers for a safe return of events over the coming months, and are pleased to confirm the calendar is filling fast. During the downtime in recent months, with support and assistance from the Tatura Park Advisory Committee, we have been able to complete a number of works including upgrades to the cattle ramp, a refresh of the stable block granitic surfaces, as well as installation of new netting on the north side of the Western Oval. Additionally, work has been undertaken for future planning of the venue including the Tatura Sports, Events and Community Precinct Master Plan.

If you have any questions regarding upcoming events or the Tatura Park Exhibition and Equestrian Complex more broadly, or if you are interested in being part of the Tatura Park Advisory Committee please contact Events Facilities Coordinator Jeremy Roberts on 5832 9851 or via jeremy.roberts@shepparton.vic.gov.au
