AUSTRALIA DAY IN TOOLAMBA There was a great turn-out of the Toolamba community for the Australia Day celebrations. Australia Day Ambassador Deepak Vinayak OAM JP, was an inspiring speaker, telling the audience how he arrived in the country with a big suitcase, $20 and a heart full of dreams, and worked in any job he could get until he found permanent employment. There were four awards presented. Laurie Thomson was the Toolamba Citizen of the Year for his contributions to the Toolamba community. Laurie has been stalwart of the tennis club over many years and was a founder member of Toolamba Lions Club, serving as president for two years. Katelyn Trevaskis was named Young Citizen of the Year. Katelyn has been growing her hair to be made into wigs for children who lose their hair through illness. She has raised around $800 for Alopecia Areata Australia Foundation.

The Community Service Award was given to the Wednesday Night Tennis Men’s Competition. Accepting the award, Rod Luscombe said that the competition was not so much about the tennis but about catching up with mates and that the tougher the times the more important that was. The Community Event of the Year was awarded to Toolamba Lions Club for the Twilight Festival. The Festival which provides an evening of low cost entertainment for families has become a highlight on the Toolamba social calendar. - Pat Patt

A new memorial to Private James Harper, killed in action during the First World War, has been unveiled in Murchison. Pte Harper was born in Murchison in 1895 and joined the army in 1915 after the news of the Gallipoli campaign become known in Australia. After completing training, Pte Harper, or ‘Jim’ as he was known to his mates, joined up with the Australian forces in Egypt and from there, travelled to France to join the fighting on the western front. After experiencing several fierce battles over the next couple of years, he was sent to the front line at Merris, France in March, 1918. There he joined his old Murchison schoolmate, Private Alexander Anderson. On July 10, 1918, Pte Harper was shot through the chest and carried back to a dressing station by Pte Anderson, who was a stretcher bearer. Pte Harper died of his wounds several hours later. When Pte Anderson returned to Murchison later that year, he planted a pine tree in memory of his friend. For the past twenty years, Pte Harper’s nephew and closest living relative, Andrew Crawford, has looked after the tree and kept the area clean and free of weeds. When the tree died recently, Mr Crawford decided to create a lasting memorial for Pte Harper in the form of a limestone rock and plaque next to the tree’s original location. Local historian John Gribben, Shepparton deputy mayor Shelley Sutton, Pte Alexander Anderson’s grandson John Anderson and Andrew Crawford all spoke at the unveiling. Mr Crawford said that he was delighted with the number of people who turned out for the occasion and thanked everybody who helped to organise the site.

Over the Christmas period the inside of the building has received a fresh coat of paint and the staff have been busy creating a fun circus themed room. Thanks to the Men’s Shed, especially Leigh, for making up the new hat and coat stand.

125th ANNIVERSARY TATURA FIRE BRIGADE As you walk into the Tatura Fire Brigade, it’s impossible not to feel the sense of pride these members have for their brigade. They all wear broad smiles on their faces and are more than happy to welcome any visitors. As you look around you can’t help but notice the shelves filled to the brim with trophies and plaques. 125 years of trophies to be precise. The Tatura Fire Brigade was first registered with the Country Fire Brigade Board on February 1, 1894, with a strength of fifteen fire fighters looking after thirty houses and no notable public structures at the time. Although it possessed what today would be considered very basic equipment in the Hogan Street Station, the brigade had a clear mission, the protection of Tatura. Since that time, the brigade has dealt with many major incidents such as the Gippsland fires in 1966, the 1974 floods, the Barmah fire in 1979, Ash Wednesday fires in 1983 and the Black Saturday fires in 2009. Over the 125 years our equipment and location may have changed, but not our mission. We were lucky enough to receive an updated pumper just before Christmas and we are currently planning for a new station to be located at the Racecourse. Our current member numbers are 22, but we now look after 2026 private dwellings, some really large industry, a thriving little community of businesses in Tatura, and we also support surrounding districts. As we all know, many hands make light work so the Tatura Fire Brigade is looking for volunteers, and not just to fight fires. Maybe you would like a new social network? Or would like to learn some new skills? If you feel like you have something to offer, or you would just like to know more, pop down to see us. We are at our station on Casey Street most Monday nights from 7.30pm, or you can contact Captain Trevor Franklin on 0430 014400. We are also on Facebook. So, have a look and follow what we do and catch up on some of the latest news from the CFA. - Amber Wymer

LIZZY SMITH Tatura’s Lizzy Smith is the 2018 Dux of McGuire College with an ATAR score of 96.95. She fast tracked English and Outdoor Education in Year 11 and in 2018 studied chemistry, biology, maths methods and her favourite subject, psychology. Lizzy is off to Melbourne University to do a Science Degree and she will probably major in biology. One of her first year electives is ‘The Ecological History of Humanity’. This sounds as if it will prove very interesting as it covers the effect of ecology on humans and the effect humans have on ecology. As a first year student Lizzy will be staying at St. Marys College, a residential college attached to Melbourne University and she hopes to be involved in the musical which the College puts on each year. Lizzy studied hard for her result and balanced hitting the books with her involvement in Initial Stages, the junior theatre company, and dancing twice a week. Lizzy is the elder daughter of locals Jill and Greg who are very active in the local community. Well done Lizzy and good luck with your future studies!

TATURA PROBUS CLUB Tatura Probus Club held their first meeting of the year at the Tatura Community Centre in January. Members gathered for a chat and welcomed the new year. We seemed to survive the heatwave so far. Thank goodness for our air conditioning. President Ev opened the meeting and welcomed three guests. Secretary Phyll read the correspondence and invited a representative to attend a meeting at the Peppermill Centre to meet with other clubs on March 28 to discuss some ideas and suggestions for trips and excursions. Reports: Geoff spoke about the coming trip to Strathbogie on March 21, Jean informed the members what’s going on at Riverlinks and said that everybody who had attended the concerts last year had a lovely outing. February 13 will be songs made famous by Julie Andrews. Anna presented the birthdays with a little lucky dip. Diana Miranda give us a talk on her business as a Clinical Nutritionist and informed us that she works with her clients with a plan for their individual needs. There will be a workshop on February 11, at 7pm at 63-69 Taylor Road Tatura. Our guest speaker was Lawrence and Jan from Valley Funerals, Owen Mohan They spoke about pre-paid funerals and the business side of things, including ways to cover your expenses. Jan suggested that anybody interested should make an appointment with them to understand what they want. She told us that one chap requested his ashes be interned in a diamond ring and there was a few laughs about that. Lawrence also gave an excellent talk and we all ended up having a good laugh. Dates to remember are February 16, Hill Top dinner, March 21, Strathbogie trip and February 13, the Riverlinks concert. - Edith Bradbury

AN HISTORICAL QUILT

On a recent search for any new information on my great grandfather, Abraham Charles Chammen, I came across a story for ‘A Successful Quilt and Craft Show’ in the Sept 2016 edition of the Tatura Bulletin. There was mention of a quilt made by him during the Crimean War. I have seen this quilt, and tried to point out to its then caretaker, Mrs Melva Cook, that he did not serve in the Crimean War, as he was too young. He enlisted in the 45th Regiment of the 1/7th Royal Fusiliers on January 17, 1863 at the age of seventeen. This particular regiment served in India, and the quilt was most likely during his term of service whilst there. It is good to know that it is still in the hands of those who care for it, in a dry climate in central Victoria. If you should happen upon its current caretaker, could you please pass on this information to them. I am a quilter myself and love the creativity of it, and have always wondered where my creativity came from. Perhaps it was the Chammen side of the family tree. - Linda Smith (nee Nunn)

TATURA BOWLS CLUB The weekly pennant bowls games have concluded with just finals yet to be played. The Tatura Midweek pennant division side failed to make the finals, finishing just outside the top four however the weekend pennant has both Division 2 and Division 6 playing finals in early March with players eagerly looking forward to being competitive and looking at premiership achievements. There is still plenty of bowling activities happening on the greens with many local club games currently underway. Tatura Bowls Club coming events include the Jack Lowry Memorial Mixed Triples on the 10th March followed by the Sid Moore Open 2 Bowls Triples on the 11th March. - John Crilly

BODY LANGUAGE I am a flight instructor and one of my students was having great trouble landing the aircraft. He could not judge how close to the ground he should be before getting the plane's nose up. Strangely enough, during our first nighttime lesson he did an excellent job. On each approach, just when I thought I was going to have to take over, he would pull back on the stick and make a beautiful landing. I asked him what visual reference he was using, since there were few clues in the dark. He told me that he just aimed for the end of the runway lights. Then he waited until I stiffened in my seat, whereupon he'd pull back and land.

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS LUNCH The Tatura Football Netball Club has once again conducted a very successful Christmas lunch, with 100 people being in attendance. This is the third year that the lunch has been going, and the organisers, John Lovel and Steve O’Toole said that it is getting bigger every year. From a very small idea, this day is now a very important event for Tatura and the surrounding area, with people coming from all over the Goulbourn Valley. All those who attended enjoyed a wonderful lunch, and the feedback received was overwhelming which makes all the effort of the volunteers very rewarding. This year we had fifteen volunteers, and we had to say no to a lot of people who also offered their help. The lunch is supported

by many generous donations from within our wonderful community, with a lot of the meat and financial donations making the day much easier to organise. Steve and Mandy O’Toole once again supplied a fantastic roast lunch, and with the outstanding efforts of the volunteers, the lunch was finished by 2.00 pm, allowing all the helpers to return to their own families to enjoy Christmas day. John and Steve said that on behalf of the Tatura Football Netball Club they would like to thank everybody who volunteered on the day, and they are looking forward to next year’s event being even bigger.

TATFEST 2019 Come to Mactier Gardens on Sunday, March 3 and join us for a day of fun, entertainment and food. This festival is brought to you by the Lions Club of Tatura Inc. Last year 1600 people plus volunteers enjoyed a great day. This year will be even better. TatFest, the festival for all ages celebrating Tatura and District community and businesses, is on again on Sunday, March 3 at Mactier Gardens, Hogan Street, Tatura. Gates open at l0am and close at 4pm. Entry is free. Lots of food, craft and general market stalls, entertainment and, yes, we will have fairy floss, popcorn, strawberries and ice cream, as well as meals, soft drinks, beer, wine, and cider. Last year TatFest contributed $9500 towards purchasing an appropriate bus for residents of Moyola Lodge. TatFest 2019 will be raising funds to purchase some new beds for Tatura Hospital. TatFest 2019 will be bigger and better than ever. We will have our Zorb balls, the abseiling tower, the train rides, sumo wrestling suits for big and small, a petting zoo, bouncing castle, face painting, some small games, testing your serving speed with a tennis ball and possibly some 'surprises'. The whole of Mactier Gardens and the area to the west across Casey Street will be fenced to make the area safe for children. Flanagan Place and Casey Street from Hogan Street to the railway line will be closed from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

New Stock Arriving Daily

As a very special event, the CFA, SES and Ambulance Victoria are going to demonstrate how they work together to pull a wrecked car apart and rescue the passengers. For those interested in old cars, the car club will be displaying a number of their members lovingly restored cars. THE BRUCE ANDERSON SCHOLARSHIP The Bruce Anderson Scholarship is now available for first-year students from Tatura and surrounding districts for university studies in 2019. A one thousand dollar grant is available to assist a student with living expenses while studying. Dr Bruce Anderson (1936 to 2009) was a vet in the Tatura district for thirty-five years, serving the rural communities in both private practice and in the public service. He also served the community as an active member and passionate supporter of the Rotary Club of Tatura. Bruce is continuing his support for the community with his bequest, which funds this scholarship. The Rotary Club of Tatura is encouraging all first-year university students from Tatura and the surrounding districts, from Mooroopna to Rochester, to apply for this scholarship. Selection is based on any of the following criteria: financial need, academic merit and record of community involvement. Last year Liam Cowan from Tatura received the scholarship to assist with the study of Environmental Science at Burwood College. He said the financial assistance allowed him greater freedom to be more involved with on-campus student organisations in his spare time. The application procedure is reasonably simple, requiring proof of enrolment in a first-year degree course, a resume with VCE results and three references. For more information and application forms email: sj.lolicato@gmail.com or call 04 0092 0467.

FELLOWSHIP REKINDLED Past Anglican Guild members have decided to meet on the second Friday of each month at 1.30pm in the hall to reminisce and look to see where the future takes them. Our first get-together will be on March 8 at 1.30pm in All Saints hall. For more information, please call co-ordinator Olwyn Milner on 5824 2549 or 04 1327 1641.

GEOFF LIPSHUT

Well-known Tatura lawyer, Geoff Lipshut, has left Dawes & Vary Riordan after forty-one years in the job. It was Geoff’s first job from university and he did his articles with Jim Stewart and Brian Birrell. Geoff said it was a great journey and he has built life-long relationships with many work mates and clients along the way. Geoff is not retiring from the law. He has opened his own practice called ‘Lipshut Law’ and will operate out of 6 Francis Street, Tatura (the old picture framer’s premises) after he completes a refurbishment over the next month or so. In the meantime, he will work from home. Geoff said he is not old enough to retire and says that he knows more now than he has ever known, so why retire. He said, “I want to continue to give the local people the benefit of my forty years in the law, delivered with personal service and at a reasonable rate.” Geoff is an accredited specialist with the Law Institute in wills and estates and also practices as a notary public.

Goulburn Valley TREE GROUP By the time you read this, the weather should have moderated to the stage where realistic thoughts of what to plant should be surfacing. It is a waste of time, energy and water to even think about planting in the hot weather. Also, don’t forget to prepare the soil where you intend to plant, whether a large or small area. This will also give you a flying start should we be blessed with early autumn rain. This year things have gone much more according to plan with the exception of a glitch in the hothouse watering system which resulted in some losses but otherwise the plants are well advanced and in fact are looking splendid. We have some new varieties, Callistemon linearis, Hakea drupacea (sweet scented) and Melaleuca gibbosa (Slender Honey Myrtle). A luxury item will be grevilleas as each single seed has a price tag on it which means it will cost you $5 per plant. Just think of all the birds it will attract. The Nursery would greatly appreciate buyers bringing their own boxes/ containers for their purchases as we find it hard to meet this need. If nursery boxes could be returned that would be even better. - Joan Baumber

TATURA CHILDREN’S CENTRE Over the past month, educators have been busy establishing and maintaining trusting relationships with each and every child. With many new families enrolling into TCC this year, it has been of paramount importance for us to establish a sense of wellbeing for the children while maintaining a connectedness to their existing home and Community. For Australia Day, we embraced and celebrated this national day by focusing on Australia as a whole. Educators incorporated a range of different learning experiences for the children to explore, such as Australia animal habitats and adding natural resources such as sticks, sand and gum leaves to encourage manipulation, creativity and knowledge. Painting the Australian flag was popular in

the Fun group room and during this experience the children reflected on the colours and stars with their educators using technologies to deepen their knowledge on the Australian culture. The pre-school children scaffolded their celebrations by engaging in dot paintings using different mediums and textures. As the year progresses, we will continue to acknowledge our ancestors and celebrate the wonderful cultures of the world to educate the children in our Service of the World in which we live. We believe at TCC it is important to assist children to develop strong foundations and relationships with others and our community, and if we can use our national Australia Day as a catalyst, we are supporting our identity to Australia as a community. - Sheree Carver

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL Tatura Primary School is proud of its traditions and its continuing developments into the future. We are excited by the possibilities that our wonderful new building offers and also the prospects for our four new staff in 2019. This year we welcome Nick Mellington, Charlotte Aburrow, James Nihill, Justine Russell and Samantha Aitken. The school year has started very smoothly with over 50 new students beginning at TPS. Just prior to this Bulletin going to print, our school leaders were inducted at a special ceremony in early February. I look forward to sharing some of the photos that marked this auspicious event in our next Bulletin report! The date for the official opening of our new building is still being determined, but we

look forward to welcoming everyone to see the teaching and learning that continues in our school on this special day. The photo attached shows how the building complements our beautiful setting nestled in the tranquil heart of Tatura. This term also holds many exciting events ahead- the launch of our values based approach to learning and playing. At Tatura Primary School we CARE. We CARE about the Community, our Achievement, Respect and the Environment. We are also looking ahead to the swimming carnival, the House Sports and the District Sports late in the term when we host Toolamba Primary School and Sacred Heart Primary School. - Susanne Gill, Principal

The Early Years - Religion In the earliest days of selection, intermittent visits were made to the Tatura area by ministers from Echuca and Murchison representing the Presbyterian Church. Services were held at the homes of Mr A. Stewart, ‘Gowrie Park’, Tatura, Peter Guthrie and various homes at Toolamba and at the school on the ‘Springvale’ estate owned by Mr G. Baines at Girgarre East. In December 1876, at the first meeting of the newly-formed Seymour presbytery, Rev. William Thomson of Mooroopna drew attention to the needs of Rushworth, Whroo, Girgarre and Toolamba, and at the next meeting in January 1877 he was authorised to temporarily supply the district of Toolamba. He commenced fortnightly Sunday evening services at ‘Gowrie Park’ and encouraged the young people to attend the homestead on Friday evenings for choir practice. The ‘Pioneer Church’ at Toolamba was already two years old in 1876, but its beginnings were probably more Methodist than Presbyterian. The wooden building, which was later converted to a brick building, is closer to the old Toolamba West school than it is to Toolamba. The history of this unique congregation is interesting. Before the first church was built, services were held in James Crawford’s log kitchen, then in 1873 land was given by Mr W. Nevett and the church was erected as an interdenominational effort, although its control was to be in the hands of the Methodists. All the wood was cut from mature gumtrees at Toolamba and the framework was completed by the end of the year. A shingle roof was added after the harvest and in March 1874 the opening service was held in the ‘Toolamba Pioneer Primitive Methodist Church’, also called the ‘Pioneer Church’ and the ‘Little Church’. An annual tea and public meeting were always a regular feature of life in this church. A swing was set up in the grounds and often there was a lolly scramble for the children in the front of the building. Reminiscing in the Guardian in 1947, Mr A. Nevett recalled that during an afternoon service one Sunday afternoon, “while church was being held in the open due to the heat, the peaceful air was suddenly broken by the noisy advance of many kangaroos. The temptation was too much for the younger members of the congregation who rushed for their ponies and left in a cloud of dust.”

V

Anthony Groves and Martha Beech were the first couple married in the Pioneer Church and the last wedding was that of Stan Collins and his wife in April 1923. The old building was sold to Mr W. Fuzzard for removal and in March 1925 it was demolished. The new church became totally Presbyterian and in August 1923, after the closing ceremony for the old church, the first Bible, together with other Methodist documents, was handed over to James Nevett. Methodists and Presbyterians worshipped on alternate Sundays at the Pioneer Church until 1905 when the former ceased. In 1912, the members of the Presbyterian congregation negotiated for the purchase of land and buildings which they had rented for seven years and which legally belonged to Mr Nevett who was described as the “founder and owner of the church”, and in 1914 Nevett transferred the title and sold the building to the Presbyterians for forty pounds. By 1882, the congregations at Tatura and in the district had grown to such a degree that made a resident minister not only desirable but necessary. A committee was formed to investigate the extent of support for such an appointment, and its members were Messrs J. McGill, W. Patterson, A. Barron (Toolamba East), G. Dunlop (Toolamba South), H. Darrock (Toolamba North), P. Mactier, C. Wilson, J. Gibb and H. Chestnut (Tatura). Alex Stewart donated an acre of land in Tatura for a church, and services were appointed to be conducted at W. Patterson’s in Toolamba, the ‘Springvale’ schoolhouse and at the Tatura Mechanic’s Institute. - Source: Tatura and the Shire of Rodney, W.H Bossence (available for purchase from the Tatura Museum)

2018 DARWIN

AWARD WINNERS Part Two… Honouring Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool, by removing themselves from it. The criterion for the awards states, "In the spirit of Charles Darwin, the Darwin Awards commemorate individuals who protect our gene pool by making the ultimate sacrifice of their own lives. Darwin Award winners eliminate themselves in an extraordinarily idiotic manner, thereby improving our species' chances of long-term survival." 6. The Last Train – India, An Edinburgh University lecturer watched his friend plunge to his death from a moving train after the men realised they were on the wrong train, and decided to jump off. Fabian Galama, 53, and his Dutch friend Erik Suidman, 51, were travelling by train to Agra on the last leg of a two-week journey in Western India. However, the pair mistakenly boarded an Express to New Delhi and decided to jump off the train as it left the platform. Fabian jumped first and escaped with minor injuries but Erik suffered fatal head injuries after he lost his balance as he jumped and landed on the tracks. 7. Camera Shy - India, In May in the city of Odisha, India, Prabhu Bhatara tried to take a selfie with an injured bear while stopping at a bathroom on the way home from a wedding reception. Bhatara's friends reportedly tried to deter him from taking the selfie, but he ignored the warnings and got up close to the animal for a picture. The bear quickly attacked and despite attempts from his friends to intervene, Bhatara died on the spot. The bear was later treated for its injuries. 8. No Conversion - India, John Allen Chau, a self-proclaimed world explorer inspired by Livingston and Jesus, was killed by the very tribe of natives he was offering eternal life. According to the BBC in Delhi, Chau bribed six fishermen to ferry him to Andaman Islands which are off-limits to the general public, so he could offer the Sentinelese tribe gifts of scissors, a soccer ball, and Jesus. In a letter he wrote to his family, this Vancouver resident said he wanted

The Darwin Awards salute the improvement of the human gene pool by honouring those who accidentally remove themselves from it through moments of stupidity.

to make contact with the 60,000 year-old tribe because, ‘The eternal life of this Sentinelese tribe is at hand.’ He paddled to the island in a kayak and according to the global news agency AFP, Chau was immediately attacked by arrows but continued walking. The fishermen then witnessed the natives tying a rope around his neck and dragging his body along the shore. They were clearly rejecting his gifts. The tribe, the most isolated on earth, has taken a well-documented, zero tolerance approach to visitors since they were almost wiped out by a British occupation force during the 1800's. It's no surprise Chau's remains remain unrecovered. 9. Helpfully Unhelpful – New Zealand, Howard Miller spent his last moments helping a friend weld an exhaust pipe onto a classic Holden Kingswood sedan. He arrived at the garage shed with an experimental LPG bottle in which he had mixed both components that make up oxyacetylene welding gas: acetylene and oxygen. Unfortunately, without a flow regulator, Miller had unwittingly constructed a lethal explosive. Once Miller unveiled his jury-rigged device, his friend immediately recognised the danger and repeatedly warned Miller that it was crazy before eventually rushing out of the shed. However, Miller wasn’t to be deterred by a bit of panic and attached a torch head straight onto the bottle and lit the welding tip. Without a regulator, the flame leapt back into the bottle and the inevitable explosion flattened the shed, which also contained about twenty litres of paint thinner and gasoline. The force of the explosion was so intense it shattered the windows of neighbouring properties. Needless to say, Miller’s friend is in need a new car. 10 – An Honourable Mention – Austria, A 50-year-old man was hospitalized after taking home a projectile he found buried in a field outside his village. He decided to pound it with a hammer causing it to explode.

WORLD EVENTS

in March

March 1 – World Compliment Day. The idea behind this day is to make it the most positive day of the year and was created as a way to spread happiness and increase productivity. It mentions using small gifts as a way to praise family, friends and co-workers and to show your appreciation. It also suggests complimenting everybody you meet, which I feel is counter-productive because you know the compliment is meaningless. It’s a bit like shop assistants telling me to have a nice day. They’re just empty words. March 2 – International Old Stuff Day. People often see old things as something to be replaced by newer, shinier things but many old items like maps, books, jewellery, furniture, and wine gain value as they age. Antiques are items that are at least 100 years old, while vintage items usually have to be at least 30 years old. Even more valuable is the wisdom and knowledge we can get from old people if you just take the time to step away from your ipad and talk to them. It is said that wisdom was replaced by knowledge and knowledge has now been replaced by information. On this day, take a moment to listen to the old folks around you but whatever you do, don’t ask about their medical conditions. March 3 – Dress in Blue Day. Caught early enough, colon cancer can be successfully treated. Dress in Blue Day is to raise awareness of the potentially fatal threat of colon cancer and hopefully encourage people to be screened for it, thereby reducing the number of fatalities. If you (no point looking around, I’m talking to you) haven’t been screened recently then stop reading this and go and make an appointment with your doctor. It could save your life. March 4 – World Grammar Day. Thank heavens! A worthwhile day at last. So where to start? Perhaps with the sports commentators who have never heard of adverbs and choose to use adjectives in their place or texting teens who have completely mutilated the English language in a bid to send messages more quickly and cheaply. (Please note the use of adverbs in that sentence which is something you’ll rarely experience while listening to the football or cricket.) March 5 – World Namesake Day. Do you know who you were named after? There is a long tradition of naming people after other people, most often our parents or grandparents, but sometimes aunts and uncles, or even just famous people for whom your parents hold in high regard. Unfortunately, many celebrities, who seem to come from the shallow end of the gene pool, struggle with this simple tradition and end up calling their children Apple or Peaches. The strangest name I’ve come across

is Tula Does The Hula From Hawaii. Try fitting that on your driver’s licence. March 7 – Alexander Graham Bell Day. On March 7, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell was granted a patent for ‘transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically.’ Three days later, Bell uttered the famous words, "Mr Watson, come here, I want to see you," into a transmitter. His assistant, Thomas Watson, who was in the next room, heard the words clearly and thus, the first telephone was created. Almost immediately after, Watson received a call asking him if he wanted to install solar panels on his roof. March 8 – International Women’s Day. This day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. Unfortunately, in many countries, cultures and religions, women are still treated as secondclass citizens, or worse, as chattels belonging to men. We’ve come a long way but there is still a long way to go. March 10 – Mario Day. This day was chosen because Mar10 looks like Mario. Since his first appearance in the 1981 Nintendo game, Donkey Kong as Jumpman, Mario has featured in over 200 video games, several television shows and comics. If you’ve never played a Mario game then you need to put it on your bucket list. March 14 – Pi Day. No, it’s not a typo so don’t get excited and go rushing off to the bakery. Pi (π) is the most recognizable mathematical constant in the world and is the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter. Its value is approximately equal to 3.14159265. It is an irrational number, which means it cannot be expressed as a ratio of whole numbers, and its decimal representation never ends or repeats. How exciting is that? Well, my son thinks it is because he can recite the first fifty numbers as a party trick. March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general with parades, drinking, dancing, drinking, special foods, drinking and a whole lot of green. March 18 – World Wide Quilting Day. This is aspecial day to celebrate and inspire lovers of quilting and to encourage others to take up this charming and addictive craft. Quilting is a form of sewing where small pieces of fabric are stitched together. Call the Tatura Community House if you’re interested in learning this useful skill. March 20 – International Day of Happiness. Really? We need a day to remind us to be happy? Happiness should be so common that we should have a national day of unhappiness

just to remind us that it shouldn’t be taken for granted. Remember that happiness is an attitude and the choice is yours. Step one on the path to happiness is to avoid negative people so any discussions about the Australian cricket team should be given a wide berth. March 21 – World Poetry Day. Poetry reaffirms our common humanity by revealing to us that individuals, everywhere in the world, share the same questions and feelings and are also capable of writing verse that is completely incomprehensible to the average man or woman in the street. If you have a poem, send it in to the Bulletin and if it is not too long and we can understand most of it, we may publish it. No promises though. I mentioned this last year and we received zero poems. Come on, what are you waiting for? March 22 – World Water Day. As with so many things in Australia, we take the availability of reliable, fresh water and effective sanitation for granted. Water is also vital for creating jobs and supporting economic, social, and human development. One of the major issues facing us in the future will be providing sufficient water for our growing population. Perhaps it’s time to bite the bullet and build another dam. March 26 – Spinach Day. Green spinach is full of nutrition, including iron, vitamin A and calcium, and is renowned for being a healthy a part of a well-balanced diet, but do we eat enough? I’ll answer that on behalf of 98% of the population, no. So how about learning from Popeye and including so more spinach in your diet. Your body will thank you. March 28 – Black Forest Cake Day. To those of you unfamiliar with Black Forest Cake, and I’m sure there are a couple of you, it is made with rich layers of chocolate sponge cake mortared together with a flavourful whipped cream and an assortment of cherries, then frosted and topped with more of the same. You have the green light to scoff down a large helping on this day. Your flavour buds will thank you, although the rest of your body won’t. March 29 – Smoke and Mirrors Day. This is all about deception, illusion and magic tricks. There are plenty of easy card tricks you can learn to amaze your friends and children. Smoking while you do this is not an option. March 30 – Doctor’s Day. It’s easy to forget just how important, valuable and necessary good doctors are, that is, until you get ill or sustain an injury. Doctor’s Day puts hard working doctors in the spotlight, and encourages us to be considerate of the long hours they work, their compassion, and the effort they put into practicing medicine. - John Kriesfeld

AROUND TATURA

The Merrigum Fruit Processors started production recently and is already producing between 70 and 80 tonnes of fruit juice a day. The former Carnation factory, a white elephant for almost three years, has operated on a single shift this week with five employees. Manager, Mr Ian Lobban said he expects that the plant will operate with two shifts in the near future and possibly even three. The only original equipment being used is the refigeration. The plant has been producing pear juice, which will be moved by bulk tanker to the plant’s parent company in Mildura, the Murrayland Fruit Juice Group. ***** Rotary Exchange student Ms Robyn Hipwell, was guest speaker at a recent meeting of the Tatura Rotary Club. Robyn, who was sponsored by Tatura Rotary, spent twelve months in America where she was hosted by the Spokane East, Washington Rotary Club. During her stay, Robyn attended school which she found a lot easier and different from those in Australia. Robyn was surprised at the lack of knowledge of Australia, with one American asking what language we spoke. The students were fascinated by her accent, although she returned with a strong American accent of her own. Robyn told many anecdotes about her stay and described some of the major festivals of the American year such as Thanksgiving, Halloween and a white Christmas. ***** Inmates at Dhurringile Prison are part of an ambitious biological control project to kill an insect fast becoming a scourge to district growers. Prisoners are now growing a soya bean crop which will be deliberately infested with leaf mites, and then a new population of predator mites will be unleashed on the pests.

The effort will be part of a microscopic war about to erupt on district fruit trees later in the year. Organisers hope hungry predator insects will eventually be let loose on their unwitting victims across the Goulburn Valley. ***** Tatura’s Unifoods plant has quietly become Australia’s tomato processing capital. Formerly Rosella-Lipton, the Unifoods plant is set to receive a record quantity of tomatoes this season. Acting works manager at the plant, Mr Jim Douglas said, “Our target this season is about 70,000 tonnes of tomatoes.” This shatters the previous record set last season of 57,000 tonnes. At the peak of the season the Tatura plant produces 250,000 bottles of tomato sauce daily. But bulk and retail tomato paste remain the company’s most popular product. The plant, which has been associated with quality tomato products for decades, also produces tomato soup, chutney, pickles and pasta sauces. ***** Jeanette Morris is Tatura’s new librarian. Jeanette comes from Newcastle in New South Wales and did her training at TAFE. She and her husband and their young son are now living in Tatura. Her husband is a computer scientist in agriculture at the Tatura Research Institute. ***** The combined Lions Clubs of Tatura, Merrigum, Murchison and Rushworth raised more than $10,000 for local charities with their annual fish-a-thon at the Waranga Basin. This year’s fish-a-thon attracted a record 400 entries, more than twice as many as last year. Redfin, trout, perch and other fish exceeding eight inches were eligible catches, but carp were not counted. *****

Dhurringile prisoners have discovered a World War Two escape tunnel while checking the garden. The tunnel, four metres below the surface was built in the early 1940’s by German prisoners of war. Prison officers knew tunnels existed around the mansion, as Germans filled cavities in the mansion’s walls with dirt from wartime tunnel digging. One officer, Mr Irving, told how a Telecom worker came out to put wires in a wall a few years ago. “He drilled a hole in the wall and dirt just started pouring out,” he said. Prison spokesman Mr Geoff Carroll said a patch of ground about a metre in diameter subsided after trees in the vicinity were watered over-night leading to the discovery of the tunnel. ***** Mr Richard Graves has been appointed manager of the Tatura Branch of the Westpac Bank, replacing John Love who has been transferred to Shepparton. Mr Graves arrived in Tatura from Yarram where he was manager for four years. Mr Graves and wife Sue have three children, Brett 17, Evan 15, and Shelley 12. Mr Graves has a passion for the great outdoors and his hobbies include bushwalking and fourwheel driving. ***** Rodney Shire ratepayers flocked to the recent Tatura Bush Market, some in anticipation of giving Rodney Shire Secretary Mr Royden James a drenching. The attraction of the dunking machine was perhaps the reason why the sixth annual Tatura Rotary bush market has been hailed ‘the best ever’ by one of the organisers, Mr Peter Leahy. Mr Leahy said crowds were larger than in previous years and about 65 stalls were set up with bargains for everyone. The camel rides proved a winner with the children, and at stages they were lining up for an hour to get a ride. Another feature of the bush market was the bullock train. Rob Barnbrook, from Rushworth, drove his bullocks and cart from Rushworth the previous day and gave free rides to children. Rob conducts tours through the Rushworth State forest, a novel way of travelling. Mr Leahy said the Rotary Club raised in excess of $1000 and would be putting the money back into community groups. ***** Adrian Glenister has taken out his fourth consecutive Tatura Lawn Tennis Club singles championship. The ladies’ singles championship went to ten-time winner Debbie Russell while Katrina Love won the girls championship for the second year when she defeated Stephanie Ballantyne in the final. Rohan Thomas had a very successful tournament when he won the Junior singles championship and was runner-up in the B grade singles and also won the B grade mixed doubles. - Source: Tatura Guardian Newspaper

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle

I was sitting with Agnes and Fred having a cup of tea and a couple of cakes in our favourite coffee shop and chatting about nothing much in particular. I’m not sure why Agnes invited Fred as he is usually off playing golf or pottering around in his garden. Still, she hasn’t been herself lately as apparently the years are starting to catch up with her, so perhaps he decided to come along to make sure she didn’t get lost on the way home. Agnes suddenly stood up and said, “If you’ll excuse me, I have to go and powder my nose.” “Of course, Agnes,” I replied. “Do you want me to come with you?” “I’ll be fine on my own, thank you very much,” said Agnes, a little haughtily if you ask me. After she had wandered off, I turned to Fred. “Have you noticed anything different about Agnes lately?” I asked carefully. “I think she’s had her hair done,” replied Fred. “Is that what you mean?” “No, I wasn’t thinking about her hair, it’s more about her moods.” I decided to throw caution to the wind. After all, when you’re a good friend, such as myself, sometimes you need to be quite blunt in order to make your point. “It seems to me that she has become quite snappy and short tempered lately,” I said. “Is she on any special medication for her age?” Fred’s eyes narrowed slightly and he looked as though he was about to get short-tempered and snappy as well. “Of course she’s not on any special medication for her age. I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I shook my head sadly. Obviously Fred was in denial. However, before I could explain the facts of life to him, Agnes returned with a most peculiar look on her face. Fred noticed it as well. “Is something wrong Agnes?” he asked. “No, not really,” she replied as she sat down. “It’s just that I’ve had the strangest experience in the toilet.” “Oh,” I exclaimed, “that doesn’t sound very good.”

“I was sitting there in the cubicle minding my own business,” said Agnes, “when the lady in the cubicle next to me said, “How are you going?” I didn’t recognise her voice and I wondered how she knew it was me. Anyway, after a moment I said, “I’m fine, thank you very much. How are you going?” Then she asked me what I was doing on the weekend. I still didn’t know who I was talking to and I thought it would be rude of me to ask her for her name seeing as we’d already started talking to each other so I just told her, in general terms, what Fred and I would be doing over the weekend. Then she said, “Look Kylie, I’ll call you back later. Some old biddy in the next cubicle keeps talking to me.” I frowned. “So, she wasn’t talking to you after all,” I said. “Well no,” replied Agnes. “She was talking to somebody on her phone but how was I to know? I had to wait until I heard her go out the door before I could leave. I didn’t want to bump into her. It would have been most embarrassing.” “These mobile phones are more trouble than they’re worth,” grumbled Fred. “I read in the paper that kids nowadays are addicted to them. If their phone beeps and they’re unable to check the message immediately, they start to shiver and shake. These phones are killing the art of conversation if you ask me.” “I think you’re being overly dramatic Fred,” I replied as once again I assumed my familiar role as the voice of reason. “No, I’m not,” replied Fred rather too loudly for my liking. “There are people walking around as if they’re zombies watching their phones. It’s a wonder more people aren’t run over by cars.” “I heard that they’re banned on public transport in Japan,” said Agnes. “Apparently it’s bad manners to talk on the phone if you’re on the train or the bus.” “It’s bad manners here as well,” replied Fred, “but it doesn’t stop people from doing it. Perhaps we should all go and live in Japan.”

HEIDELBERG FLOORS

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” said Agnes. “I can’t speak Japanese.” “I don’t think Fred was serious, dear,” I replied as I struggled to my feet. “Anyway, it’s time I went and did my grocery shopping.” After we said good-bye to each other I drove to the supermarket and naturally I got the trolley with the wobbly wheel which threatened to continually guide me in the wrong direction. After paying for my groceries I pushed the trolley out onto the footpath and was heading back towards my car when I noticed a young lady walking towards me who had her nose almost glued to her mobile phone. She also had white thingies stuck in her ears and appeared to be talking to herself. Because of the slope of the footpath, I didn’t want to move out of her way as the trolley would end up in the gutter and probably smash into somebody’s car so I just stopped moving. She was walking quite quickly and as she got closer, I said, “Excuse me dear,” as I tried to attract her attention. However, she didn’t seem to hear me and walked straight into my trolley. She wasn’t a small lady and she gave the trolley quite a jolt, I don’t mind telling you. It was all I could do to hang onto it so it didn’t run down the footpath and into the gutter. She looked slightly startled initially but once she recovered, she let fly with some quite extraordinary language which, once I eliminated all the swear words, implied that I was a silly old lady who should watch where I was going. However, before I had the chance to explain that she was the one at fault and that she was a very rude person, she had already swept past me and disappeared into the supermarket. I would never tell Fred, but perhaps he has a point about phones turning people into zombies. So, could somebody please tell me, are mobile phones making people increasingly rude? Are people becoming addicted to them? Can somebody please tell me? Anyone?

March GARDENING PLAN The change of seasons from summer to autumn is welcomed by gardeners and the garden alike! The sun begins to lose its intensity giving some much needed relief. The days become mild and mellow, perfect for restoring the garden back to its best, harvesting the last of the summer vegetables and planning for the cooler months ahead. So, while we are now in autumn and your soil still remains warm, put your plan into motion and plant out your winter vegies and spring flowering annuals. Vegetables to plant out now: Beetroot, Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, Cabbages, Carrots, Cauliflowers, Cress, Endive, Herbs, Leeks, Lettuces, Onions, Parsnip, Peas, Silver beet, Spinach, and Turnips. Flowers: Alyssum, Aqualegia, Calendula, Dianthus, Carnation, Cornflower, Delphinium, Everlasting daisy, Forget-me-not, Foxglove, Gypsophila, Hollyhock, Larkspur, Linaria, Livingston daisy, Lobellia, Pansy, Polyanthus, Poppy, Primula, Snapdragon, Statice, Stock, Sweet pea, Viola, and Wall Flower. There's an old saying that bulbs should be planted on St Patrick's Day, March 17, but if you're a bit late, it won't matter! Try to have planting finished (except tulips) by mid-April. Some suggestions to think about planting now would be Daffodil, Jonquil, Freesia, Ranunculus, Anemone, Crocus, Hyacinth, Muscari. Tulip bulbs need 4-5 weeks in the crisper section of the refrigerator before planting out at the end of April to early May. It's also known to plant out Sweet peas on or around St Patrick's Day. If you have a spare sunny spot, try growing some of these gorgeously scented flowers. They are also great to cut for the vase inside. Fertilize Azaleas, Camellias, Rhododendrons, Gardenias, Magnolias, Daphnes and Pieris using a fertilizer designed specifically for acid-loving plants. Fertilize the whole garden with a controlled release all purpose fertilizer. You can divide strawberry clumps and start some new plants from runners. Place some mulch around the base of the plants to protect the fruit (when fruiting) from sitting directly on the soil surface. Strawberries

love manure and regular watering to become big and juicy fruit. Repair bald patches in the lawn. Use a lawn seed blend that both contains a starter fertilizer with the seed so that it will carry the new grass through to next spring. Aerate using a garden fork to aid in the penetration of water and nutrients down to the roots. Autumn is the best time of year by far for planting trees and shrubs. They have time to establish before the cold weather really kicks in. Do you want a tree but are not sure what to plant? Then try the Cornus Kousa or Japanese Dogwood Tree. For smaller yards try Crepe Myrtles, Ornamental Pear, Crab Apple, Maples, Dogwood or for something evergreen the Flowering Gums. Corymbia ficifolia are spectacular during their flowering season during summer. A smaller sized gum to fit smaller areas. I personally like the Japanese Dogwood Tree - Cornus Kousa as it looks spectacular when in flower season. Kousa dogwoods bloom in the spring about a month after flowering dogwoods. The blooms last about six weeks and gradually fade to pink, giving a long season of colour. In summer the deep forest-green foliage and elegant arching and horizontal branches make Kousa dogwood a favourite for outdoor seating areas, large containers, and border plantings. In autumn the foliage turns a brilliant reddish-purple, and the branches become laden with unique red fruits. The fruits are edible, but the birds find them more palatable than we do! In winter, Kousa dogwoods show off their naturally pleasing shape, along with showy exfoliating bark that peels back to show rich greys and browns. They make a dramatic silhouette in the winter landscape. They enjoy full sun to partial shade and Kousa dogwoods do best in well-draining, moist rich soil that’s not too heavy. They have average water needs, but will require irrigation during a drought, especially if planted in full sun. - Janine, Viberts Nursery

My usual Tatura Bulletin story relates to crime prevention. This issue it relates to trauma prevention. Road trauma. Greater Shepparton Police developed the ‘Cool Heads’ program in 2008 and our objective and motivation remains the same today; to remove the devastating impact caused by fatal and serious injury collisions on local roads. The program is not about teaching our young drivers how to drive; it is about highlighting the real consequences of distraction and risk taking while driving. It is designed to improve the attitude of young drivers towards driving on our roads. I am pleased to report that over 7,000 young drivers have attended a Cool Heads Young Driver Program across the last 10 years. Today a Greater Shepparton 16-25 year old driver is 72% less likely to be killed or seriously injured on our roads than back in 2008. The support of our community partners is crucial to the program’s success. Our emergency services, Greater Shepparton City Council, GoTafe Shepparton and our local media outlets such as the Tatura Bulletin. Presenters volunteer their time to share their road trauma experiences with the audience, motivated to reduce road trauma in our community. The deaths of local, young people on our roads has had a devastating impact on their family, friends and their local community, schools and sporting clubs. The program challenges drivers, before it is too late, to take the opportunity to make important decisions about their attitudes to driving. The reality is that 16 to 25-year-old drivers have the highest risk of being killed or seriously injured on our roads. Cool Heads focusses the audience’s attention on the devastating impact that road trauma has on the lives of so many. It aims to motivate all drivers to reduce driver distraction each time they get behind the steering wheel or in a passenger seat. The program provides families, social groups and clubs a free and local preventative program. So, bring young drivers to CoolHeads and reflect on how poor choices can let road trauma enter your life… before it is too late. The next program, the first for 2019, will be on Wednesday evening, April 3, at the GoTafe Auditorium Fryers Street, Shepparton commencing at 7pm sharp. - Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer

ROTARY TRIVIA AND GAMES NIGHT

WYBALENA RETIREMENT VILLAGE

Help Rotary to help our local primary Schools. How? Trivia, Games Night Community funds are always needed and Tatura Rotary tries its hardest to provide extra financial support. For example, we assist people in need, youth through scholarships and camps, kindergartens, Moyola, Historical Society, SES and sporting organizations. So now we want to help the local primary schools by raising some funds for them to use for their children. Uniforms, excursions, school camp attendance, lunches can all be expensive and there are many other ways of using extra money. Tatura Rotary is to hold a Trivia and Games Night and the money raised will go to Dhurringile, Tatura, Sacred Heart, Toolamba, Murchison and Merrigum primary schools. The night will be held on Saturday March 30th at Victory Hall. 7.00pm for 7.30pm start. It is a bring your own food and drink. Cost is $100 for a table of 10 or $10 per individual. So come on schools, come on organisations and individuals make this a date. For any queries and/or bookings please contact Rotarian Neta – 0412 137 619

Murchison Retirement Village invites retirees 60 years and over, who wish to live independently on a smaller scale, to consider a Unit at Wybalena. The complex consists of eleven, two bedroom units and is overseen by a Committee of Management. Ingoing costs are very reasonable and maintenance fees are kept to a minimum. All maintenance is taken care of by the Committee. A fully renovated unit is currently available and the Committee is interested in talking to people looking for this style of accommodation. Located in Impey Street, Murchison, the Village is within walking distance of the shops in the main street, the medical centre and pharmacy, and next door to the vibrant and friendly Murchison Community House. The Committee maintains a waiting list of interested people, so even if you are not ready for a move yet, you are invited to come and have a look and to register your name for future contact. For more information, please contact Bruce Smith on 0437 627 210 or Margaret McMaster.

Scoring. 0–2. Struggle Street. Watching reality TV and texting your friends on the phone has some benefits but gaining general knowledge isn’t one of them. 3-5. Bland Street. The majority of the population fall into this category. After all, average is safe. If you stand out from the crowd you become a tall poppy and we know what happens to them. 6-7. Above Average (sort of). As my mum used to say, “Good, better, best, never let it rest, until your good is better and your better best.” It’s now time to become a smarty pants. As you know quite well, we always need more smarty pants. 8-9. Smarty Pants. I hope it wasn’t question 9 that tripped you up. It’s a bit like, “Who’s buried in Grant’s grave?” Sometimes you can be too clever. 10. Genius. Really? Every question correct? You’re probably the only person who achieved that feat, so what are you waiting for. Give Eddie a call now! There’s a million dollars up for grabs.

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, February 2019 - Page 33

Citizen of the Year 2019 – Sue Mancini

Devoted to her community, Sue made positive changes for the lives of many, particularly in her lobbying for all-ability access into local businesses and public facilities, such as creating friendly entrances at the Tatura Commonwealth Band, Tatura Community House and Victory Hall. In addition, she supports the Shepparton Spinal Injury Resource and Support Network. He passion grows from assisting those, to also organising the ‘Kindred Spirits’ project and Opera in the Gardens. She is an inspiration for the entire community to look up to and gives her all for any project or event she is a part of. Tatura has certainly benefited from her passionate spirit to care about others.

Community Event of the Year 2019 – Tat Fest

The first event was held in 2017 as a new major project developed by the Tatura Lions Club to showcase the region’s businesses and community to attract a wide range of attendees for a fun filled day. The community event caters for all ages with attractions for food lovers and wine connoisseurs and providing entertainment the whole family will enjoy. In 2018 the event grew to 1,600 people attending and 140 volunteers donating their time to help raise a staggering $9,500 which was donated to Moyola Lodge.

Sports Award 2019 – Gaye Eaton

A champion netballer, Gaye was the first from the code to be inducted into the GV Hall of Fame to honour her many years of commitment to the sport in the GV Netball league, coaching for Tatura Netball as well as her off the court assistance in administration. She continues to inspire the next generation of netballers in the community as a role model for Junior Netball. Currently, Gaye is the catering co-ordinator at the Tatura Football Club and helps provide delicious meals for the events including the outstanding International Dairy Week.

Young Citizen of the Year 2019 – Daniel Maher A passionate sportsman, Daniel is involved in many community programs where he is a role model for junior athletes in Tatura and the surrounds. He demonstrates excellent leadership skills as a member of the Tatura Football Netball Club as the Reserves Captain and Social Fundraising Organiser. Part of his duties is also assisting in the annual Christmas lunch run by the community. Daniel is also an Auskick Junior Football Co-ordinator and runs a Primary School football program. Alongside his sporting achievements, he is also involved in local cancer fundraising and volunteers his time assisting in gardening and maintenance for the elderly.

Senior Citizen of the Year 2019 – Bill Milner

An outstanding community member, Bill’s presence is known across a number of community groups for his kind and generous nature. Sports, health and education are some of the clubs Bill has his foot in, devoting himself to daily operations, leading projects and encouraging participation in the community. Friends describe him as always having a willingness to contribute with an infectious personality which bring joy to those around him.

Some of the groups he is involved in include the Tatura Lions Club, All Saints Community Church, Ardmona Primary School Council, Tatura Hospital, Shepparton Police and District Neighbourhood Watch Committee and Mooroopna Golf Club. The following is the speech made by Bill Milner when he accepted his award. ‘Australia as a country is a collection of individuals who happen to share the same shores. Some will be Australian of the year and some won’t but they'll be Australians contributing to the whole in many ways. We have a tremendous wealth of people from different ethnic back grounds and skills that makes it possible to stride into the future with confidence and hope. That's what an important part of what Australia Day should be to reflect and applaud those men and women who have moved us forward over the years and to celebrate what binds us together as a community because Australia Day is a day like no other when we can all come together to celebrate what makes us one. It is a celebration of our achievements, a celebration of all that is great in our community and a celebration in all we can be proud of as a nation. However, the past is something we shouldn't forget. It comes with valuable lessons, past mistakes we should try to avoid and past glories we would do best to recreate. We have the vast amount of good people who reside here who are caring thoughtful and helpful to others in distress, some of those in this community outstandingly so. We should foster the values these people have created and build on them in our community. And perhaps we should take a little time today as individuals to think about what you are proud of about Tatura and how you can make it a better place to live. And finally, a quote my grandson gave me some years ago. “Alone of all the races on earth, Australia seems to be free from the grass is greener on the other side of the fence syndrome and roundly proclaim that Australia is already on the other side of that fence and I say let our grass grow greener and greener.”

Guest Speaker – Peter Moar Peter was born in Tatura in 1971. His parents Dominic and Alma emigrated from Italy after the war and Dominic became the station master at Tatura until he retired in 1983. Peter attended Sacred Heart Primary school and Notre Dame College. He learnt his cricket under Frank Howley and went on to play in the under 16s and then senior cricket with Tatura. He was school captain at Notre Dame College in 1989. Peter completed an engineering degree at Latrobe University and then progresses to the Australian National University, focusing on advanced telecommunications, setting up and managing a consulting company that ended up as his first global start-up company which is still running in Berlin today. Peter moved to Germany for five years and eventually he established a start-up company to design and make satellites for detecting fires and floods on a global scale and conduct fire landscape management. Commercially, it didn’t succeed, however it did result in Latrobe university co-designing the German space centre DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer that is now running on the international space station. Intellectual property from Tatura is now on the International Space Station and proving vital imagery for emergency services around the world.
