TATURA FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB – REUNION DAY

The Tatura Men’s Shed is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am. Don’t forget the Tuesday lunches. Drop in for a chat and a cuppa on these days.

WITH KERRY…

It’s 1960, and twenty-one-year-old Harriet ignores her father’s warning that “only fools, Bohemians and tarts live in Kings Cross” and moves into Mrs Delvecchio Schwartz’s rooming house. There she discovers that Mrs Delvecchio Schwartz has more sources of income that rents. She casts horoscopes, reads tarot cards and gazes into her crystal ball. But it is mute four-year-old Flo – her mother’s medium and beloved angel puss – who captures Harriet’s heart.

What a rich, wonderful and slightly eccentric characters fill this book. Written of a Kings Cross long forgotten when everyone knew the Vice Squad. A fabulous read and hard to put down.

On 6th August 2022 TFNC celebrated the 50 year reunion of the 1972 Reserves premiership and the 10 year reunion of the 2012 Senior premiership. A number of past players were also in attendance to celebrate the joint occasions. After meeting throughout the day and cheering the current team on, a formal dinner and presentation of players, support staff and board members was held in the Ballantyne Centre that evening. The coach of the 2012 senior side, Steve Daniels, gave a brief insight into his career path since leaving the Dogs, which included coaching Labrador to a premiership, Assistant coaching at Gold Coast Suns, to his current position of head coach at VFL team Southport Sharks which are currently sitting second on the ladder.

The night also included a presentation to Linc Wellington who broke club legend Freddo McMahon’s long-standing record for most senior games played with the club. It was appropriate that Freddo was in attendance and presented Linc with a plaque and congratulated him on his incredible career.

Many stories were told, some true, some exaggerated, but a great day and night was had by all.

Thanks to organisers Rohan Thomas, Jye Warren, Andy Crawford, and Daryl Eaton, as well as the catering and bar staff led by Gaye Eaton and Catherine Brooks.

It should be mentioned that the Club’s current Senior coach, Paul Kirby, who was a key player in the 2012 premiership team, has notified that he will be stepping down at the end of the season. The Club wishes to thank Paul for his outstanding efforts during the last three difficult years.

CWA HARSTON

Our monthly meeting was very busy as we enjoyed a cuppa and biscuit over a catch up chat. The CWA Goulburn Valley West Group Spring Conference had recently been held at the Harston Hall, Mrs. Glenys Eberle gave a report to the Harston members, who hadn’t been well enough to attend on the day. The Guest speakers were Teresa and Carol, from Housing for the Aged Action Group Inc. There is a problem all around Victoria with Homelessness and the ladies spoke passionately of their work in trying to secure homes for the needy. If you would like more information it can be found by www.oldertenants.org.au

The Group Exhibition is being held on Sunday September 11th 2022, at the Victory Hall in Tatura. Starting at 10.30am until 4.00pm. CWA members from around our local area will be displaying their handcraft, preserves, cooking and art works. You can purchase “goods” from the Trading Table or buy a raffle ticket on the day. The judging is by accredited CWA State Judge’s. *This is for both members and the public, the entry cost is only $10.00 (includes a Devonshire Tea) of Tea and Scones. Children under 16: Free entry ($5.00 Devonshire Tea)

Our President Glenys Eberle bought along a quilt, belonging to the Members of Harston, this was completed many years ago by past and present members, who contributed to the handcraft stitching, before being sown together by Mrs. Margaret Corrigan. The quilt will be displayed at theT Group Exhibition on September 11th before being donated to the Tatura hospice ward. It’s too wonderful to be hidden away in storage.

The competition at our Harston Meeting was a Cushion, this was won by Mrs. Freda Clement, and with 2nd going to Mrs. Glenys Eberle and 3rd was Mrs. Fay Alexander. The best flower bloom was 1st Glenys, 2nd Freda and 3rd Mrs. Josie Watson. Mrs. Marilyn Pell won the small monthly branch raffle.

Harston members just a reminder, the competition at our next meeting is ‘Football club’.

The Harston Branch presently have a number of CWA Spiral Cookbooks on hand should you be looking for a copy, contact Marilyn: 0408 530 690 or Glenys: 0428 283 241, Thank you.

Yours in CWA friendship Mrs. Marilyn Pell (Harston Branch Treasurer)

IRISH HUMOUR

Paddy and Mick are on long distance flight when the captain’s voice comes over the speaker.

“This is the captain speaking. We’ve lost one engine, but no worries, we have three left, and this aircraft can fly safely on three engines. However, we are going to be one hour late reaching our destination.”

One hour later the captain’s voice is heard again. “This is the captain speaking. Unfortunately, we’ve lost another engine, but there’s no need to worry. We have two left, and this aircraft can fly safely on two engines. However, we are going to be three hours late reaching our destination.”

NEW BUSINESS IN TOWN

With warmer weather right around the corner many of our yards will be slowly shrugging off their dormancy, making this the perfect time to begin putting some much needed TLC back into your lawn according to Nate Dedman, the owner and operator of Tatura based business

GV Property Clean.

"With the majority of residents in the Goulburn Valley having warm season grasses, it's easy to get stuck behind the 8-ball with your mowing now that spring is on the doorstep," he said. "Buffalo grass will be waking from its winter hibernation, while those of us with Kikuyu will see this common variety look to take advantage of the moist ground and sunshine. There is no better time to lock in a mowing and maintenance schedule to ensure that you too can enjoy a great Aussie lawn over the sunny season."

GV Property Clean are passionate about lawns and getting the very best from whatever turf variety you may have at your property. They offer recurring lawn mowing and maintenance services, giving customers peace of mind

about the job being undertaken on their property - a key reason as to why the business was started, said Dedman.

"Throughout the pandemic we all saw just how important our homes were, and how special that space is to us and our families. When you're looking for someone to undertake work on your property you need to have the uppermost level of trust and comfort, as well as having them be punctual and reliable. I saw an opportunity to not only take lawn care to the next level within the area, but to provide the type of service which our customers deserve. That's what GV Property Clean are, we're family owned, local and reliable - plus, we'll have your lawn looking a 'million bucks."

Affordability and quality are also top of their priority list as well, with their team looking to work with you to tick all the boxes. From a standard fortnightly mow to a full turf renovation - they can do it all Dedman said. With a selection of regular mowing spaces available for the season, be sure to contact their team today to book your spot!

One hour later, the captain’s voice came over the speaker once again. “This is the captain speaking. “I’m sorry to inform you that we’ve lost another engine. However, there’s no need to panic as we still have one left, and this aircraft can fly safely on one engine. However, we are now going to be five hours late reaching our destination”.

Paddy says to Mick, “Blimey, Mick, if we lose that last engine, we could be up here all night!”

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL

For term 2, we were fortunate to receive Sporting Schools funding which we used for Bike Education.

To further the range of activities that our students can participate in at school and to extend our SHINE (Strive, Healthy, Include, New, Emotions) program, Dhurringile Primary School decided to spend the Sporting Schools funds on Bike Education in term 2 2022.

Each of our students was purchased a new bike to use at school along with a helmet and

safety vest.

To support the Bike Education program, we also purchased a set of road signs, traffic lights, model cars and model signs.

Bike Education encompasses a variety of skills and curriculum areas including:

• Physical Education,

• Health,

• SHINE (Strive, Healthy, Include, New, Emotions),

• Maths, and

• Personal and Social Capability.

After initial safety and bike riding skills as part of our PE program, the students have been allowed to ride their bikes at recess and lunchtime. The students assisted in developing the Dhurringile PS bike riding rules to keep everyone safe.

And the verdict from the students – double thumbs up!

Hardworking Parents

TATURA PRIMARY PARENTS & FRIENDS

Breaky Smiles

Who wouldn’t want to hang out with their friends and have a hot breakfast before school starts? Tatura Primary School Parents & Friends run the School Breakfast Club every Friday morning much to the delight of the children.

Foodbank Victoria, in partnership with the Victorian Government launched the School Breakfast Clubs Program in 2016 for 500 schools. In 2019, the government expanded the program to a further 500 schools including Tatura Primary School.

FoodBank Victoria provides the school with a number of breakfast items such as cereal, milk, fruit pots, spaghetti, baked beans, honey and vegemite at no cost. The remaining items are kindly donated by Tatura Hot Bread and Tatura Milk or purchased using financial contributions from Tatura Family Butchers, Tatura Lions Club and Tatura Rotary Association. Our past sponsors also included Tatura Bakery & Lunches and Kyvalley Milk. We are truly thankful to the local business community for their generosity and support of the School Breakfast Club. Their support has made the breakfasts so much more enjoyable.

Helen Musvamhiri coordinates the Breakfast Club and its volunteers. Despite the cold winter mornings of late she is always happy to see the children gather round the canteen window eager for breakfast. After being on and off for two years because of Covid restrictions, it is fantastic to see the kids laughing and enjoying their time together sharing breakfast before class begins. The program is open to all children – no questions asked. They may not have had breakfast, are still hungry or just feel like eating with their friends – whatever the reason, the School Breakfast Club is open to them. Our hot toast with spaghetti and a cup of milo have been a real winner this Winter and are enthusiastically devoured from 8.30am until the bell rings.

We are always looking for volunteers to join the Breakfast Club. If you would like to help out, are available on Fridays from 8.15am –9am during the school term and have a valid Working With Children Check, please give Helen a call (0439 802 542) or send an email to parentsandfriendstaturaprimary@gmail.com

CUBBY NEWS

Wow another month gone by and it has been full steam ahead at the cubby. With near capacity enrolments for most days, we are now open on Thursday as well with limited places available. Please give us a call to discuss your needs.

This month we have been focusing on nutrition and healthy eating, which has been great to see all the children arrive such amazing and healthy lunches and snacks. In keeping with our environmental practices, the children have been eagerly organising all our waste into organic, recycling and general rubbish. It’s so good to see our future environmental guardians at work. But it is not all hard work at the Cubby, there is still plenty of time for play including, using the building block to make towers and then knocking them down, playing with the stickly bricks to make all sorts of creations, chalk drawing practicing letter, numbers and shapes or just chilling out in the new quite area. There is something for everyone. More information is available on our website www.tatcom.vic.edu.au

TATURA PROBUS CLUB

The meeting held on July 28 was an interesting one with another member inducted! Carole Bland is our newest member. President Betty Smith inducted Carole and presented her with her badge; congratulations Carole!

Ann Tee was our Member behind the Badge. Ann told us of her life in England, marrying Ken and having two children; and of their decision to come out to Australia, a decision they have never regretted. They had another child here in Oz but they are all Aussies now! Ann has a marvellous memory and is a wonderful storyteller and the members were delighted. You’re always a pleasure, Ann! Our Guest Speaker was Beatrice Greaves, an expert on fibres, such as wool, silk, Alpaca and Angora. Beatrice showed us samples of these and also various combinations. Wool, from various types of sheep, is the most used fibre. She also had samples of Finnsheep a relatively unknown breed but gaining in popularity. Finnsheep are not shorn as they lose their wool in clumps. Beatrice showed us some of her knitted garments, hand knitted and machined. A totally interesting segment, told to us in a very relaxed and informative manner. Trish Warnett thanked Beatrice on behalf of the Club.

Fifteen members went to the Billabong Nursery on July 14 for a very enjoyable lunch. Phyll Bramley, who arranges the lunches, also organised a quiz for later on. This created a lot of fun and was won by Ann Tee. The Nursery can be highly recommended as a drop in for a coffee or lunch and a walk around the garden. Please contact our President Betty Smith on 0408 329 686 for further particulars concerning the Club.

100 Days of School Celebration, 2022

On Wednesday the 3rd of August, Foundation and Grade 1 students from Tatura Primary School celebrated 100 Days of School. Children enjoyed dressing up as 100 year old people and participating in fun activities. We saw some lovely wigs, glasses, walking sticks, woollen jumpers, long skirts, beads, trousers and hats. The day started off with smiling faces as children and teachers shared their creative costumes with their class. The whole school was able to share in the excitement as students paraded their costumes through each grade. Children were happy to send photos to their families using our Seesaw platform. Students then rotated throughout the day to decorate a “100 Days Smarter” headband, they created an old person collage and participated in maths activities relating to the number 100. A special dance video featuring our students and teachers was also created to mark this special occasion. It is available for everyone to see through Tatura Primary School’s Facebook page. At the end of the day all students were presented with a 100 Days Smarter certificate and a box of Smarties. A very big thank you to our Foundation and Grade 1 families for the effort they put into organising costumes. A terrific day enjoyed by all!

8-9. Smarty Pants. Excellent. Congratulations! You’re smarter than 95% of the population. Whether you choose to believe statistic is up to you. Oh, you do believe it. I thought you might. However, it also means you’re not as smart as 5%. Oh, I see. You don’t believe that particular statistic. 10. Genius. Every question correct! Go you! Lucky for you it was multiple choice because there were a couple you weren’t too sure about, weren’t there? However, you now have a month to bask in the glory by asking other people how they did on the quiz.

HARSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

RODNEY CWA

In July, Kaye Watson was our guest speaker, on Photography, by definition, “Painting with Light”.

parishioners spending their days at home. For those at home with kids or grandkids, we put together a weekly ‘Little Saints’ kids pack which includes a kids bible teaching and some simple crafts to do as a family at home. The sermon, newsletter and kids pack are emailed to the congregation and for those who do not have internet access, is printed and left in letterboxes.

Kaye attended a course on photography during her long service break from nursing. She is now very proficient and is much sort after, including for her lovely cards and calendars. There have been big changes in photography over the years from pin hole and the box brownie to digital the new normal.

Harston Primary School is humming along beautifully. We are advertising for next year already! Everyone is engaged in all aspects of their learning. First week started with our visit from Merrigum PS for Bravehearts for the younger students and the older ones had Lego time and outside games together. We ate lunch and listened to a story finishing off our time with a lollipop. It was so nice to see the school have nearly thirty students here. We had a lovely time with Merrigum PS. We have started our poetry theme for literacy and have studied the authors Dr Seuss and Graeme Base. We read Dr Seuss books and visited Seussville. We also looked at Graeme Base and the students have enjoyed using his Animalia app. The word vocabulary we are building just from finding objects in pictures has been overwhelming.

We have started our money theme and all students are counting and earning money. In a couple of weeks, they get to spend their money. Our theme of ‘People Who Help Us’ is going well.

Kaye gave many hints to help improve the quality of our photos: Light is most important. To avoid red eye, either use a separate flash or turn away. Eyes are the most important focus for a portrait. Composition is important: divide the view to be taken into thirds both vertical and horizontal. Observe the best position to take a photo. When taking groups of people, take many shots as it is difficult to get a good shot from everyone. Children – squat to their level, be patient, be ready.

Gardens – middle of the day too much light, choose a slightly overcast day, in the morning or late afternoon.

Over the Easter weekend, George Ferguson and I placed artwork by one of our parishioners, Kate Peachey, on display outside the church building along with three crosses. The portraits captured Jesus’ journey to the cross and his resurrection. We chose to put up this display to help our community reflect on the true meaning of Easter; the sacrifice that Jesus made dying on the cross to reconcile people to God. Many people doing their regular daily exercise in Tatura walked past the building and saw the paintings and crosses.

Very informative, a very broad subject. Kaye was thanked for her time and presented with a small gift in appreciation.

Due to some Covid in our school, our visit from the park ranger will be in the next couple of weeks. We have the police coming week five and Paul Wickham from the Mooroopna Chemist to visit us personally. We have had the AFL teach us about footy. Everyone had a great time, and we have all learnt new skills! We are celebrating Erik reading 100 Books. We also had some students share about International Scout Day. In the next couple of weeks students will get to spend their money at our shop.

The CWA State Creative Arts Exhibition was held in Tallangatta in early August. We now are preparing for our GV West Group exhibition in September at Victory Hall.

Yes, the church building may be closed but as the bells ring each Sunday morning, please know that the church community are still here in Tatura, praying for you and believing we will come through this together.

The subject of our 8th September meeting will be “Painting plant pots,” and the competition is “Best gardening hint.” At the Tatura Bowls Club rooms at 1:30 pm.

A recent visit to The Museum of Vehicle Evolution in Shepparton was a very pleasant afternoon. Although I've been there numerous times in the past, it had been a while since my last visit, and I wasn't disappointed. I knew they had an ever-changing collection of vehicles on display from every era and corner of the globe but found the new refurbishment of the building also added to its appeal. Almost all vehicles on display are on temporary loan, as they have an amazing and generous network of collectors and enthusiasts who share their machines. We were fortunate to talk to one of those men when we were looking at his old MG.

The Museum houses the Garth Wallace Harley Davidson Collection, which showcases a century worth of fully restored and survivor machines from the iconic brand.

The Kenworth Dealer Pavilion houses around fifty trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles of varying ages. It also features the legends of the local trucking and transport industry, telling the story of their lives, businesses, and trucks they operated.

The Furphy Museum is a dedicated area showcasing the history of the iconic family businesses, J Furphy & Sons and Furphy Foundry and their evolution through to the modern era. From the famous water carts and camp ovens, through two world wars, to the modern engineering and manufacturing businesses that still operate in Shepparton today.

The late Paul Farren and his wife, Charlie, dedicated forty years to amassing one of the finest collections of vintage bikes in the world. It consists of over 200 bikes, dating from as early as the 1860s and includes tricycles, penny farthings and hobby horses. Charlie works closely with MOVE to ensure the best possible visitor experience and shares her extensive knowledge through different mediums.

The late Dick Clayton was an avid collector and historian, as well as being a constant presence across radio, TV and telecommunications industries in the Goulburn Valley and his family’s donation of his collection is quite outstanding.

The Loel Thomson Costume Collection is housed in a separate room that is temperature controlled to showcase clothing, jewellery, accessories and other objects, telling stories of everyday Australians, with pieces one has never heard of alongside the commonplace. With such a large collection, they change those on display regularly, particularly so the clothing is not subjected to the lighting for too long. The highlight of our visit was to watch one of the curators, Nick, start up a Napier 1500 from the year 1912 by cranking it. He apparently starts it once a week to keep it in good working order, so we were very fortunate to be there at that time.

Whether you have been to the museum before or not, I highly recommend a visit.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

“I have some unsettling news,” I said to Agnes as I ushered her through my front door. “My company told me that apparently, I am no longer required at my job. I feel insulted and offended. It’s all the rage you know, to feel offended. Well, I most certainly do right now.”

“Merle, are you saying that you don’t have a job anymore? “Agnes looked amazed and rightfully so. She would obviously know what an asset I have been to that company for the past eight months.

“Yes, that is exactly what I am saying and it’s because I am old, I am quite sure of it. I have a good mind to take them to the fair.”

Agnes looked even more amazed. “To the fair? Why on earth would you take someone who has just sacked you to the fair Merle? And what fair? There hasn’t been a fair around here for donkeys’ years. Oh Merle, you have completely lost me on this one.”

“The fair Agnes, please keep up. They look after people who have been wrongfully sacked. My son told me about them. They help out people in my situation and I am going to call them tomorrow.” How can Agnes not know these things? Surely she remembers her own working years. Then again, maybe not. It has been a very long time for her. Not like me who likes to go off and contribute to society even in my maturing years by helping to keep the wheels of commerce oiled.

“Merle, I just worked it out,” Agnes yelled at me excitedly. She has such a bad habit of doing that, it’s her poor hearing I suppose. Her eyes were wide like saucers, as though she was looking at one of those bars of chocolates she loves so much. “You mean Fair Work. Oh, for a minute I thought you had gone a bit silly,” she said as she giggled and jiggled about, snorting along with it. She’s a strange friend at times and I do believe that marriage to Fred has made her even stranger.

“Well, whatever their technical name is Agnes, I am calling them tomorrow. The company had the audacity to tell me that they are discontinuing that side of their business where they send people like me out to snoop on shop staff to see if they are up to scratch. As if that is

“Merle, it actually sounds like a very valid reason why they don’t need you anymore if you think about it. I mean the job just isn’t there for you anymore, is it?”

I glared at her. “You’re never on my side, are you Agnes? You just assume I am in the wrong every time.”

Agnes held up her hands placatingly. “Oh, please Merle, I didn’t mean to offend you at all. I was just thinking logically.”

“Are you implying I am not logical?” I grimaced at Agnes and her horrid insults.

“Merle, no, um oh please don’t get upset with me. Just phone Fair Work tomorrow and hopefully you will feel better.”

Agnes can be so thoughtless sometimes. Here I was feeling vulnerable and victimised and all she could do was see it from someone else’s point of view. What kind of friend is she? I decided that I really needed to calm down. I glared at Agnes for a moment and then huffed off to my pantry as I said, “I have decided to pour myself a glass of whisky.” I dusted off the bottle and poured a nip into a glass and then added some ice. Would you like one too Agnes?” I asked as an after-thought, not really interested in her response.

Agnes shook her head. “Er, no thank you Merle. It’s far too early for me.” She looked as guilty as she should be feeling.

I no sooner picked up my drink than there was a knock at the door. Still holding on to my glass of whisky I opened it. Of all the people, it was Penelope Pickles from the Wednesday group.

“Oh my,” she immediately said, her mouth agape. “Drinking at this time of the day, Merle. I would never have thought.” Standing right behind her were Michelle and Dorothy.

“No, I, no I just poured this for Agnes.” I fumbled around and promptly put the glass on the table in front of Agnes. “There you go Agnes,” I said while sweetly smiling.

Agnes sat like a deer in the headlights for a moment and then started to speak but I quickly cut her off. “Yes,” I said to the ladies who were staring at Agnes in amazement, ‘but in her defence, this is completely out of character for her but she has had a very bad day and she thought a quick nip might be helpful. I can vouch for the fact that she hardly ever drinks.” Agnes looked even more confused, so I quickly ushered the ladies outside the front door and asked what they had come for.

“Well Merle,” Michelle started to speak and Penelope talked right over the top of her which is a bad habit of hers and everyone knows it. “We came to tell you that our little Wednesday syndicate has had a win on the Lotto.” This was amazing news and I was suddenly feeling on top of the world again. Penelope said that they did not know how much but would tell me when they put the ticket in tomorrow. She wanted to give me the heads up as they were all very excited and already starting to make plans on how to spend the money. They left pretty quickly and I hurried inside to tell Agnes my good news.

“Merle, you just threw me under the bus,” she exclaimed indignantly. “You know that was not my drink at all.”

“Oh Agnes, don’t worry about any of that, I have just won on the Lotto. I don’t care about that silly job anymore. I don’t even need the money for that matter. Oh, the world does have a way of rewarding those who are worthy.”

Agnes frowned and once again I noticed the deep furrows on her forehead when she does that. She must make a conscious effort to stop frowning I thought to myself.

“Anyway,” I continued, “now the whisky is to celebrate. Are you sure you don’t want one Agnes?”

“Certainly not,” she said in a rather unusual tone.

Why are some people so moody? Was she jealous of my good fortune? Can anyone explain? Anyone?

FINANCE WITH LYNETTE HOME LOANS

Lynette Melis is the Franchise owner of LoanMarket Kyabram, is an Award-Winning Finance Broker with over ten years broker experience and is a local of Tatura for over thirty years.

What can I do if my repayments are getting too high?

As the cash rate continues to trend upward, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has continued its trend of increasing the cash rate.

According to our data, all lenders in our panel increased variable interest rates on home loans in line with the cash rate increase last month. This means homeowners with variable rates or split loans will have already noticed an increase in repayments.

If you find your repayments have jumped to a level you find difficult to repay, it is a good idea to review your options with a finance broker.

Is now a good time to fix my home loan?

As interest rates across the board are continuing their upward trend, anyone on a variable rate will have noticed their repayments have increased. The idea of a fixed rate with locked-in repayments may be appealing, especially with predictions the cash rate will only continue to rise.

Speaking with a broker could help determine whether refinancing is right for you. While lenders across the board have increased rates, there are a number of cash back offers, where a lender will provide a cash payment to refinancers who make the switch. We may also be able to negotiate a better rate for you as a new customer, or for if your equity has increased.

Other ways a broker may be able to help include:

Consolidating debt: If you have loans outside of your mortgage, such as a car or personal loan, or credit card debt, you may be able to roll them into your home loan. This could result in a lower interest rate and simpler repayments.

Reviewing existing loan: If there are features attached to your home loan you do not use, it could be possible you could transition to a different loan with lower fees or interest rate.

Repricing: Your lender may be open to lowering your interest rate or fees, especially if your equity has changed since your last review or if your rate is not competitive.

TATURA MUSEUM MUSINGS

The Annual General Meeting of the Tatura and District Historical Society Inc. was held on 27th July with 15 members present. Reports were read and all current office bearers were re-elected. Annual Membership was set at $20 and now due from 1st July 2022. Thank you to the 28 members who have paid already.

After AGM business was attended to, Member Pam Wells was invited to give a talk on the writing of her recently released book ‘The Tiger Has Many Lives’. The book covers the life of her late husband Rod Wells especially the dreadful cruelty inflicted on him during his wartime imprisonment. The book is compelling reading and attested to by those present, who have read it. It is available at the Tatura Museum. After Pam’s talk morning tea was enjoyed by all.

An interesting envelope containing many small tracings was recently received from a Mrs Fallshaw living in England. Mrs Fallshaw’s husband was an artist and friend of Alfred Landauer, who was a Dunera internee in Camp at Tatura during WW2. A few weeks later Mrs Fallshaw also sent 6 delightful sketches about A4 size, done during internment at Tatura. These will make a nice display for the next Dunera group visit.

NEW OFFICE BEARERS FOR CAR CLUB

This year’s AGM was held at the Tatura Hotel, with a good turn up of 26 adults and quite a few children. Most had a meal beforehand, with some leaving before the meeting they weren't interested in. It was great to meet them and we hope they'll join in on other social activities with us. New office bearers were elected with Troy as president, our previous president, Steve, taking on the role of vice president this year, Kristal as secretary and Chriss as treasurer. We wish them all the best in their new roles and look forward to a good year for the club in general to move forward after the last couple of interrupted ones due to Covid. For anyone interested, feel free to check out our new Facebook page: GV fins and fenders car club and we can always be contacted via email: finsandfenderstat@gmail.com - or phone: Troy on 0459 673 392 or Steve on 0448 801 495.

Our monthly meetings have been altered to the last Tuesday of each month, the next being Tuesday, August 30, gathering at the club rooms (next door to the Tatura Scout Hall) at 6.30 p.m., with everyone most welcome to attend, regardless of whether they wish to join as a member or not.

COMMUNITY BREAKFAST IN TOOLAMBA

Members of the Toolamba community enjoyed the chance to catch up with friends and neighbours at a free Community Breakfast in the township on Sunday 7th August. The breakfast was provided by the Lions club with funding from the Greater Shepparton City Council through their Social Recovery Grants. Other community groups, including the Food Swap, CWA, tennis club and CFA, joined in the event to showcase their activities and give newcomers to the town a chance to see what the town has to offer. The Lions cooked bacon and eggs, sausages, hash browns and pancakes, to cater for all breakfast tastes and Fastbrew Coffee from Tatura was on hand so people could get a welcome hot drink. There were many comments about how good it was to have a community event again after the long break due to Covid restrictions.

Recipes

TUNA SLOSHBURGERS

This is actually a recipe I found in a town newsletter from Milang in South Australia. They did print that these are ‘delicious hot with vegetables or as a BBQ item. When cold they are great for lunch boxes or to eat with salad. They also freeze well.’

Ingredients:

1 large can Tuna

1 x 425g tin crushed Pineapple

1 grated Carrot

1 grated Onion

1 cup Water

1 cup SR Flour

2 Eggs

Salt and Pepper to taste

Oil to Fry

Method:

Drain liquid off Tuna and discard.

Put all other ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly, using the whole contents of the can of pineapple.

Be aware the mixture will be fairly sloppy. Heat frypan, add a small amount of oil to coat pan and add tablespoons of mixture to cook until brown on one side. Flip and brown other side until cooked as well.

PLAN FOR THE WORST, HOPE FOR THE BEST

Hi pet parents! This time I would like to talk about pet insurance. Traditionally, the most common thought on Pet Insurance was that it was expensive and lots of things aren’t covered. That was true then, but not now. These days, pet insurance companies are highly competitive and comprehensive. I believe that accident and illness cover should be part and parcel of owning a pet.

There is nothing more heartbreaking that having to make a tough decision for your friend just because the cost to treat them is too high. Diagnostics and specialist consults alone can run into the high hundreds and that’s before treatment begins. Allergies, broken bones, snake bite, poisoning, torn ligaments, ingesting not so appropriate objects and cancer are just some of the things that can run into the thousands to treat. Believe me, you only need one “event” in your pet’s life and your insurance can pay for itself!

Here is a personal experience that I would like to share with you. My beautiful Border Collie, Bux, up to the age of eleven was happy and healthy. He had never needed anything but routine visits to the Vet. He developed laryngeal paralysis. From start to finish, his Vet costs hit close to ten thousand dollars. Yep ouch!

Some of the things to look out for when researching pet insurance are firstly, make sure they cover the diagnostics (most do now), the limits that they put on some procedures and after care/rehab (like human medical insurance, your Dr/Vet needs to refer you to rehab services for your insurance to cover it.) Do they cover dental? Also, your yearly limit and waiting periods and make sure it’s for the life of your pet.

Most insurances offer options of excess or not. Look for companies that offer at least 80% rebate. There are some out there that offer 90% and even 100% rebate.

I believe that if you love your pet, you can’t afford not to have it. Some insurances even offer “pay gap only” which is fantastic. I pay mine monthly, but you can choose fortnightly or annually on many of them. I also choose not to include routine consults which keeps the cost down too.

If your pet really is family, the peace of mind that pet insurance gives, is priceless.

Hug your furry friends for me and may they all chase bunnies in their dreams!

September 1 – Wattle Day. Did you know that the first day of spring is also known as Wattle Day in Australia? This day was originally conceived in the early twentieth century to demonstrate patriotism for the new nation of Australia. In 1988, the Golden Wattle was officially proclaimed as Australia’s national floral emblem and in 1992, Governor-General Bill Hayden, declared that, “September 1 in each year shall be observed as National Wattle Day.” Since then, it’s been a well-kept secret.

September 5 – Be Late for Something Day. This day encourages people to take a step back from their busy schedule and intentionally be late for something. It’s important to remember that things can go on without you, and maybe it’s not all quite as important as you thought. I know of several people who have been practising for this day all year.

September 6 – Fight Procrastination Day. Every year we have numerous meetings to decide how to celebrate this day, and every year we eventually agree to organise a huge parade with a variety of floats and a couple of marching bands to march down Hogan Street, and somehow, every year, we never get around to it. However, I have a really good feeling about next year.

September 7 – Read a Book Day. We don’t expect you to read a whole book unless you’ve chosen ‘The Cat In The Hat’, but we do expect you to read a couple of chapters, and if you have children, read a book to them that they have particularly enjoyed. Children are encouraged to read when they see adults reading.

September 9 – Wonderful Weirdos Day. Nothing’s quite as dull as being boring and average. Fortunately, most of us are blessed with one or two wonderful weirdos in our lives who remind us to think outside the box and to be true to ourselves. On this day, you can try and discover the weirdo suppressed within yourself. Make an effort by dressing weirdly, doing weird things and encouraging weirdness among people around you. You can claim success when somebody calls you ‘Weirdo!’

September 10 – World Suicide Prevention Day. The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people die by suicide each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds. Up to 25 times as many people make a suicide attempt. The tragic ripple effect means that there are many more people who have been bereaved by suicide or have been close to someone who has tried to take his or her own life. 'Connect, Communicate, Care' is the theme of Suicide Prevention Day and encourages you to truly care about those

around you, and to work to help end the epidemic before it claims someone you love.

September 11 – International Grandparents Day. Where would we be without our grandparents? Too often we take for granted all the voluntary help that our grandparents have offered us over the years. There is so much wisdom and knowledge that they have gathered during their lifetime and all you have to do is ask if you want any guidance. In return, you can show them all the useful apps they can add to their mobile phones and help them understand that they can be used for more than just making phone calls.

September 15 – Mini-Golf Day. When’s the last time you played a round? I’m talking about mini-golf. This is lots of fun for the whole family and luck plays an equal role with skill so everyone has a chance to win, and apart from having a great time, the main aim of the game is to laugh at the misfortune of the other players, or perhaps that’s just me. Anyway, if Tatura wants to be a really great town, we need to invest in mini-golf.

September 17 – Australian Citizenship Day. This Day is an opportunity for all Australian citizens, whether by birth or by choice, to reflect on the meaning and importance of their citizenship. The day is used as an opportunity to think about what unites all Australians, to take pride in Australia’s democratic values and to celebrate the role citizens play in shaping the nation. This is another well-kept secret.

September 19 – International Talk Like a Pirate Day. The point to this day is that there is no point. It’s just a day for silliness to take our minds off all the depressing news that abounds at the moment. Once you master, “Arrr!” you’ve pretty much got the entire pirate language under control.

September 21 – World Gratitude Day. We tend to take the good things in our lives for granted and only focus on the things that annoy or frustrate us, and often these are insignificant. Even the basics that we take for granted such as clean air, clean water, sufficient food, shelter, freedom and safety, are denied to billions of people around the world. Take a moment to be grateful that we still live in the lucky country.

September 27 – International Coffee Day. This day is used to celebrate coffee as a beverage, with many events organised around the world. Many leading cafes and hot bread shops offer free or heavily discounted cups (or even huge mugs) of coffee to celebrate this occasion. As this hint was completely ignored yet again last year, hopefully it will be noted this time.

September 28 – World Museum Day. This day is used to promote the role of

museums around in the world, creating unique, enjoyable and free activities, often around an agreed theme. We have a world class museum in Tatura and the agreed theme this year is two-fold and by coincidence, exactly the same as last year and the year before that; the history of irrigation and the Tatura War Camps. Come along and have a look, it’s free.

September 29 – World Heart Day. Each year 17.3 million people die of cardiovascular disease, 80% in the developing world. World Heart Day was devised by the World Heart Federation to help people realise that the majority of these deaths could be avoided through a well-balanced diet and exercise. If you look as though you have a basketball stuffed up your jumper, then perhaps it’s time to take note.

September 30 – Ask a Stupid Question Day. If we’re honest with ourselves we’ve had that question we wanted to ask but didn’t want to sound stupid or uneducated. The truth is there is no such thing as a stupid question, except the one that you choose not to ask. We never learn anything if we’re afraid to ask the question to begin with. So, overcome your fear and ask those questions. The chances are most of the people around you will be wondering the same thing but are too afraid to ask. So remember, there are no stupid questions, unless of course it has just been explained to you and you weren’t actually listening because you were looking at a funny cat video on your phone. In that case it’s not the question that’s stupid but the person asking it so put away that damn phone and pay attention. Your intellect will thank you.

TATURA INDOOR BOWLS

The Tatura Indoor Bowls Club's final event for the season saw Freda Clement skip her side of Laurie Nicholson, John Crilly and Terry Gale to a victory over Keith Smith(S), Frances Britten. Lyn Nicholson and Margaret Chance in the championship final and playing off for recognition as the winner for 2022 in the W J Williams Shield.

The W J Williams shield has been an annual event played between Tatura club members since 1979 and is in recognition of the instigator of indoor bowls in Tatura, W J ‘Jack or Smiler’ Williams. In 1969 Jack ‘Smiler’ Williams, a Toolamba farmer and a carpet bowler with a Mooroopna Club, instigated and formed an indoor carpet bowls club playing out of the Tatura Bowls Club. Responsible for purchasing equipment and the tutoring of enthusiastic new bowlers, Jack became Tatura's founding president and club champion in that year. Initially play was held on the uneven floor of the old Tatura Bowls Club, now the Tatura Netball clubhouse. Use was also made of the Guide Hall and tournaments were held at the nearby Tatura Primary School. The Tatura Indoor Bowls Club was an inaugural member of the newly formed Goulburn Valley Indoor Bowling Association in 1970.

Recipes

SLOW COOKER / STOVE TOP CHICKEN SOUP

This recipe serves eight and takes six hours.

Ingredients:

2 Yellow Onion (diced)

6 stalks Celery (diced)

4 Carrot (medium, chopped)

1 tbsp Rosemary (fresh)

1 kilogram Chicken Thighs with Skin

Celtic Sea Salt and Black Pepper (add herbamare herbal salt to desired taste, white pepper and freshly ground black pepper)

8 cups Water

¼ cup Parsley (chop fine)

1 tbsp Ginger (chop finely or omit)

1 bulb Garlic (chop 3 cloves finely)

1 cup Shiitake Mushrooms (finely chopped)

Directions:

1. Add all ingredients to the slow cooker/crock pot and cook on low for 6-8 hrs/or overnight. Alternatively, cook in a sauce pan on the stove.

2. Once soup is cooked and tastes rich in flavour, collect cooked chicken legs, remove skin and bones (throw away) transfer meat section to a large bowl and shred it with two forks. Return the shredded chicken to the crock pot and let it soak for at least 5-10 minutes before serving. Adjust seasoning as needed. Sprinkle extra parsley on top for extra flavour.

Notes:

Extra water: May need to add extra water if it reduces too far, then add extra seasoning.

Fatty film on soup: May require to skim fat off the soup when cooked.

More Carbs: Add chopped potatoes (white or sweet) or cooked barilla chickpea pasta. You can also mix in raw pasta about 15 minutes before serving.

More fibre and wholesome carbohydrates: Add brown rice/noodles, buckwheat soba noodles or cooked quinoa for a complete meal.

Leftovers: Refrigerate in an air-tight container up to 3-4 days or freeze up to 6 months.

A MOST INTERESTING TALK

At the Tatura Hospital & Parkvilla Ladies Auxiliary's AGM, which was held at St.Mary's Hall in Hogan Street, we had John Kriesfeld as our invited guest speaker. John chose the topic ‘understanding’, which we thought was an interesting choice and we weren’t sure how the talk was going to develop. However, he then went on and spoke about the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (BMTI), giving us examples of each type so that we could determine where we fitted in.

In fact, it was so interesting that I didn't even remember to get photographs from the afternoon! As anyone who knows John will understand, he is not only president of this Bulletin, but is also a published author, has been involved in much of Tatura and is known by many. For those who are not aware of MBTI, as I wasn't before this talk, I'll put a little description of it here that I have taken from the Internet.

"The purpose is to make the theory of psychological types described by C.G.Jung understandable and useful in people's lives. The essence of the theory is that much seemingly random variation in the behaviour is actually quite orderly and consistent, being due to basic differences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgement. In developing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the aim of Isabel Briggs Myers, and her mother, Katharine Briggs, was to make the insights of type theory accessible to individuals and groups."

For anyone who wishes to find out more, just google "Myers-Briggs Type Indicator" and maybe even take the free test available. I’m sure you will find it most interesting.

Our new office bearers for the auxiliary were installed and a lovely afternoon tea enjoyed while we continued to chat. With our monthly meetings held on the 4th Thursday of each month at Hodson House (behind the Tatura Hospital) at 2 p.m. our next meeting is on Thursday, August 25, and anyone wishing to attend would be made most welcome.

The Gospel according to Neale. I’m 30000 ft above the Great Australian Bight, flying to Western Australia on my way to visit my best friend. I’m listening to Neale Daniher’s audio book “When all is said and done.” Neale has spearheaded the fight against Motor Neuron Disease (MND). He, along with his three brothers, played for Essendon Football Club. Later, Neale was head coach of Melbourne Football Club and later held coaching positions with Fremantle and West Coast Football Clubs. It was in 2013, while Neale was with West Coast, that he was diagnosed with MND. I listen to Neale as he recounts flying from Melbourne to Perth immediately after diagnosis. As he describes the conflicting thoughts and emotions he experienced as he flew, I’m struck by the fact, that I am following his journey.

Neale Daniher is driven by his values and his determination to make a difference while battling Motor Neurone Disease (MND). He is determined to live life to the fullest and to facing the challenges MND brings with courage and humour. He wants to find a cure for MND, even though he knows that a cure won’t be discovered in time to help him.

The purpose of my trip is to see my friend of 50 years who is facing the uncertainties of having prostate cancer. We met when we were both aged nineteen and roommates studying theology. I’ve had friends who have had prostate cancer before but Stephen and I are closer than brothers, so I am feeling his anxiety very personally. In the last month I’ve also been told that my brother, just three years older than me, has rapid onset Alzheimer’s Disease. He has lost his memory, his ability to walk and is hospitalised. I grieve because it feels like I have already lost him. I have a sense of foreboding that the future is so unknown and fragile. My awareness of mortality is being made even more real by the Estate Planning process that my wife and I initiated a few weeks ago, given the complexity of our situation and because we want to try to avoid future family conflict. I’ve always admired those people who have come to terms with their own mortality and are not afraid to talk about what happens when they die, have prepared and kept their wills up to date, chosen the hymns and readings for their funeral, etc.

I often say that at my age, when I can look back on events 40 years ago that feel like they only happened yesterday, that I can also look forward and see the end from here. It’s not a morbid thought, just a realistic outlook. I don’t fear death. It is a mystery what lies beyond death, but I have lived well and I trust God.

Life is

short and we should make it meaningful.

Neale Daniher says life doesn’t promise to be fair. Farmers can plan and work hard but that doesn’t mean that it will rain at the right time or in the right amounts. Promising sporting careers can be cut short by injury. Neale says the key thing is to control those things that you can control and don’t fret about the things that you cannot.

It is said that “Society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.” I’d like to live that way. So even as I increasingly feel my age and people younger than me are retiring, I find myself working with a greater focus and sense of urgency.

In my private business, we continue to build new sheds, invest in new equipment, and plant new vineyards. In my ministry, I am working hard to help small churches remain sustainable by creating networks via the NBN, Zoom and social media. Our Tatura congregation has sold its old church complex and bought a café and reception centre in the main street. We are working towards opening the café as a social enterprise to both serve our community and give training and work experience to refugees and the unemployed. I may never sit in ‘the shade of these trees’ but I trust that my family and my communities will be better for my efforts. What makes for the good life? What do you believe in and how do your beliefs and values influence the decisions you make and the way you live? Neale Daniher has been dealt a cruel blow, but he refuses to play the victim. Inspiringly, he looks for opportunity amid adversity. The MND foundation he founded has raised millions of dollars for research and support of those with MND. Neale’s determination to make whatever time he has left meaningful has inspired millions of people to reconsider how they play the cards life has dealt them. Playing the victim is easier, he says, but it doesn’t get you far. Daniher quotes Viktor Frankl, Holocaust survivor and famous psychotherapist who said, “Everything can be taken from a man except the freedom to choose one’s attitude to their circumstances.”

Daniher says by the time he got to Perth on that long flight from Melbourne he had wrestled the demon of negativity and self-pity from his shoulder and was determined to find the opportunity in his adversity. I’m sure that there is much more to that story, but it highlights the importance of choosing our attitude to life’s circumstances. Are we a victim or a survivor?

I am always incredibly inspired by the way the story of Jesus centres on the cross. Despite being seemingly powerless and at the mercy of merciless men, so much of Jesus’ story and achievement centres on those few hours of torture. Throughout the ordeal, Jesus remained his own person; caring for his mother, reassuring the thief on the adjacent cross of God’s grace, forgiving his tormentors, giving instructions to his disciples. Jesus is never the victim. He responds rather than reacts. He finds opportunity where seemingly none exists.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live.” (John 11:25)

This is the gospel and it’s good news.

ARDMONA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Cool Kids Collaborative Inquiry- Making Learning Fun at Ardmona Primary School!

New staff member Mr Conor Bragge has stepped into his new role at the school as Senior teacher working alongside of the students with inquiry-based learning. The story of the Titanic has captured the imaginations and curious minds of generations of people the world over and the senior students at Ardmona Primary School are no exception. Students have been introduced to this fascinating topic by way of a Lego construction project. This challenging project consists of a 9000+ piece Lego puzzle, which is divided into three main sections. The senior class has been allotted into three teams to concurrently construct this enormous model of the famous, ill-fated ship. The collaborative project is providing many learning opportunities across the entire curriculum, from Design and Technology, Literacy, Mathematics, and Integrated Studies. The students have wholeheartedly embraced this project and while the construction phase is at completion, the learning links born from this project will continue well into the rest of the school year.

Enrolments welcome anytime.

Please contact Jean Varty at the school to arrange a guided tour at any time. PH 0358290273.

TATURA LIONS CLUB

The Tatura Lions Club has been hard at work recently. We catered for the Victorian Fruit Growers breakfast held at Plunket’s Orchards, Ardmona and 130 egg and bacon rolls and sausages were cooked and served. It was a very busy day but most enjoyable. Many thanks to all the Lions who attended to make the morning successful. Where there’s work you will find Lion’s, so why not come along to a meeting and see if our club is for YOU!

A FEW THAT MADE ME GIGGLE

Did you know that before Crowbars were invented......Crows mostly drank alone. If Apple made a car, what would it be missing? Windows.

To the guy who invented zero. Thanks for nothing.

For her birthday I took my wife to an orchard, and we stood looking at the trees there for half an hour. Not the Apple Watch she was expecting apparently.

What happens when you slap Dwayne Johnson on the butt? You hit rock bottom. My wife accused me of stealing her Thesaurus. Not only was I shocked but also aghast, appalled and dismayed.

POETS! START YOUR ENGINES!

Poetry Slam is a live literary performance program where the audience chooses the champion. From July to October, Australian Poetry Slam heats and workshops connect storytellers across the nation, leading to the National Final as part of Story Week 2022.

Shepparton Library is thrilled to host a Victorian heat of Poetry Slam on Sunday September 11 from 7pm. Whether you are a budding poet or more experienced, Poetry Slam is a great way to get your poetry heard. Twenty people will have the opportunity to compete in the Shepparton heat, with the winner competing in the Victorian finals, and maybe a place in the National Final. Entrants are asked to register from 6.30pm, and with places in the competition limited to twenty poets, you will need to get in fast. Potential competitors will find the rules on the Australian Poetry Slam website. https:// www.australianpoetryslam.com. One of the best parts of Poetry Slam is that audience participation is actively encouraged, so come along and let your enthusiasm show! Judges are selected from the audience, so you may have a hand in selecting the next Slam Champion. As well as the Poetry Slam heat, Shepparton Library will host a workshop from 12noon to 2pm for twenty people. This exciting workshop will help you find inspiration all around you and hone in on your stories. If you would like to register for the workshop, contact Shepparton Library on 1300 374 765 or email on shepparton@gvlibraries.com.au.

You might choose to attend the writing workshop, the Slam heat, or both! Joining us at the Shepparton Library as Slam host and workshop facilitator is the current Australian Poetry Slam Champion Huda the Goddess. Huda is a spoken word poet, educator, mental health advocate, dancer, and workshop facilitator. She describes poetry as one of her senses that allows her to turn her experiences into art and is currently working on her first poetry collection. As a proud African-Muslim woman it is important to her that young women from her community are represented and their stories are shared. Poetry is her connection to communities, land and her people. Having the chance to make people feel something will always be her goal as an artist. Poetry Slam is for not just those that like poetry: it’s for anyone who likes live entertainment. Prepare yourself though, whether you’re cheering for your favourite poet or you are selected as one of the five judges, audience participation is a must. Be prepared for an entertaining evening of witty words and provocative prose. Poets planning to compete in the Shepparton Heat can only register in person on the night. Registration starts at 6.30pm and places are limited to twenty poets.

Scoring.

0–2. Struggle Street. What a wonderful attitude to life you must have. I’m sure nothing much worries you or upsets you as you sail along on a wave of blissful ignorance. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing so perhaps you should have a T-shirt printed to warn others.

3-5. Bland Street. You’re just another face in the faceless crowd. Mediocre, unexceptional, average, beige, I think Bland Street says all we need to know about you. Unfortunately, Facebook is not a great source of actual knowledge otherwise you’d be genius level.

6-7. Above Average (sort of). I wouldn’t get carried away with any over the top celebrations. Just stand in the street and look at the passing cavalcade of life. That’s who you’re slightly better than. Still, you do deserve a pat on the back for rising above the riff-raff.

8-9. Smarty Pants. Well done! You obviously paid attention at school and have been reading widely ever since. Those people with a score less than yours will no doubt whine that you had a couple of lucky guesses. The correct term should be educated guesses.

10. Genius. All ten correct? Really? You should either buy a Tattslotto ticket while your luck is still in or you really are a certified genius. If that’s the case, shouldn’t you be out saving the world?

MURCHISON PRIMARY SCHOOL

Our State School Spectacular (SSS) squad from Murchison Primary are now on the final stretch! We had Hara and Darren travel to Murchison recently for some last-minute training.

The 2022 Victorian State Schools Spectacular brings together government school communities from across Victoria to produce a 3-hour live show including music, dance, circus arts, puppetry, and skating.

This year’s show will be performed to an audience of about 12,000 people at John Cain Arena on Saturday 10 September, over 2 shows at 1 pm and 6:30 pm.

Talented Victorian students will feature on stage, while many other students will work behind the scenes, gaining unique, on-the-job, professional experience.

Bree definitely had the energy! Focus

LESSONS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD

We grow and develop through a variety of lessons learnt in a variety of situations. It is important to be aware of these lessons at the time they are presented to us, otherwise the universe will continue to send the same lesson until we eventually understand what is being taught to us.

I was nineteen years old, fresh out of college and sent to teach at the small township of Noradjuha, near Horsham. The locals were pleased that I was a young, male teacher as there was a subdued hope that I would be a gun footballer. The Horsham newspaper even had a small article describing me as a promising utility player from Melbourne. Being young and unmarried, I was boarded out to one of the local families who ran a sheep and wheat farm. Their eldest son, Gavin, was a year younger than me and spent his time looking after the sheep. He never had much to say and just rode around on his motor bike with his trusty kelpie sitting up behind him. He’d left school as soon as he could and could barely read. When he did speak, his grammar left a lot to be desired and, although it wasn’t a conscious thought, I felt innately superior to him.

I had played full forward in the U/18 competition, kicking three goals in the grand final played at the Western Oval in Footscray, and I proudly mentioned this when asked by the club. Even though I didn’t show a lot of promise at training, I was still named at full forward for the first game of the season against Balmoral. I remember listening to the team selections on the radio the Thursday night prior to the game and the feeling of pride when my name was read out. I had never harboured any illusions about my ability and knew that I was just a good, average player and not the match winner the town had been hoping for. Gavin was named as rover in the team as his endurance at training had been impressive. Even though the game was being played at Balmoral, most of the school children happily told me that they would be attending with their parents. The pressure was on. When I ran out onto the football oval, I noticed that the ground was ringed by cars and their horns abruptly burst into voice to herald our arrival. I hadn’t played in front of a large crowd before, or any crowd really, and I found myself walking taller as I moved into position next to the impressively muscled Balmoral full-back. Although I couldn’t jump very high or sprint very fast, I had a good pair of hands and managed to take a couple of marks and kick a goal in the first quarter. I hadn’t done much else, so late in the second quarter the footballing gods decided to intervene. As the ball was kicked into our forward line, I found myself in the middle of a large pack of players. My timing was fractionally off, and I jumped a split second too early. As the rest of the players jumped, I found myself squeezed into the air as if out of a tube of toothpaste and before I knew what was happening, I had taken a chest mark high above the pack. The car horns went crazy. Hope lived on within the community that perhaps I was a gun player after all and fortunately, I kicked the goal.

When I accidently flattened one of the

opposition players, not the impressively muscled full-back I might add but a slightly built half-back flanker, the Balmoral supporters loudly voiced their disapproval, particularly the elderly women whose language was unbelievable. They obviously didn’t know my mother because the things they said about her were completely untrue. They continued to berate me loudly every time I went near the ball during the third and fourth quarters although I didn’t actually achieve very much due to the Balmoral fullback outplaying me on most occasions. Late in the final quarter, the footballing gods decided it was time to lend a further helping hand. We were three points down and well into time-on, when the ball was kicked into our forward pocket. Now there’s something I need to mention at this stage of the story. Just around from the point post was a white wooden flagpole where Balmoral would hang their premiership flag after a successful season. On this day the flagpole was empty. The action was both desperate and furious as I rushed into the fray, and I got knocked over several times as I attempted to grab the ball. Umpires usually award a dubious free kick to the defending team in an effort to clear the scrimmage but on this occasion the game was allowed to flow. I was quite disorientated when the ball suddenly came my way and I grabbed it and quickly looked up. There in front of me were the goals, only they weren’t. What I thought were the goals were in fact the point post and the flagpole. As I threw the ball onto my foot, I was brutally slung to the ground, probably by the impressively muscled fullback but I’ll never know for sure, and the ball skewed off my boot, over the milling throng and through the proper goals. I was quite confused when the car horns once more burst into voice and my new teammates began jumping all over me. It took a moment or two before I realised what had happened. Naturally I kept quiet as my success had only been achieved through sheer dumb luck.

Although I received the accolades for the victory and didn’t need to pay for a beer for the next two weeks, the player who was clearly the best on ground that day was Gavin. While books were a mystery to him, his ability to read the play was sensational. If the ball floated over the back of the pack, he was there waiting. If it fell to the front, he was there swooping on it. When we had the ball, he was out in space by himself calling for it and if they had the ball, he waTs one of the first to lay a tackle. I was in the presence of a master. Apparently, he could also talk to the sheep although I wasn’t sure what they discussed. I learnt an important lesson that day about the many different types of intelligence and that intellectual ability is only one of many. As my feeling of innate superiority evaporated, I realised it was merely intellectual snobbery. Gavin was easily my equal.

That was the last time the footballing gods helped me. After a few games the towns folk realised I was just a good, average player and accepted me for that by playing me on the halfforward flank and life went back to normal. The cricketing gods, however, were active for many years but that’s an entirely different story.

MAGNETIC ISLAND SWIM

Magnetic Island is a lovely spot to visit and the trip out there on the ferry takes about 20 minutes. But can you imagine swimming the 8km from there to Townsville? Well, that is what six intrepid swimmers from the GC Crocs Aussie Masters did at the end of July. They joined about 100 others in making the crossing, each supported by a paddler. The fastest swimmers completed the swim in around 1 hr 50 min. Conditions for the final few kilometres were quite rough however all swimmers finished the event. Local swimmer Stephen Orr finished second in his age group after covering the distance in 2 hrs 27 min. Will they do it again next year? Maybe.
