GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL With Kerry…

Jack Charles – Born again Blakfella

With Namila Benson Jack Charles has worn many hats; musician, heroin addict, activist, even Senior Victorian Australian of the Year. But the title he’s most proud to claim is that he’s an Aboriginal Elder. In this honest and no-holds barred memoir, Uncle Jack reveals the ‘ups and downs of this crazy, drugged up, locked up and at times unbelievable life’. From his sideline as a cat burglar, battles with drug addiction and stints in prison, to gracing the nation’s stages and screens as he dazzled audiences with his big personality and acting prowess, he takes us through the most formative moments of his life. Must admit I’m a huge fan of Jack Charles. The man is brilliant. When I was reading this book it felt like I was sitting opposite him at the table having a cuppa. He has had an unbelievable life, no self-pity, it was just what it was and that’s all. Kerry Gardner

Tatura Lions Club would like to thank everyone who helped raise money for the recent Good Friday Appeal. Tatura raised over $9,000 which was a great effort.

MONSTER GARAGE SALE POSTPONED Due to the uncertainty of Corona restrictions the Monster Garage has been postponed for now. We are really keen to bring it back, so will let the community know when a new date is set.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE TATURA LIBRARY REDEVELOPMENT The Tatura Library redevelopment was officially opened on 14 Wednesday April 2021. Although the Library has been open to the public since 27 January this year, Council is now pleased to officially open the redevelopment and welcome everyone to come and utilise the space. Aunty Faye Lynam gave the ‘Welcome to Country’ and then then, after several short speeches, the ribbon was cut to officially open the Library. Doing the honours were Greater Shepparton City Council Councillor Greg James, Federal Member for Nicholls the Hon Damian Drum and Goulburn Valley Library chair Derek Poulton. The new additions to the library include a dedicated children’s area, a multipurpose meeting room, quiet reading areas and an IT zone featuring new computers. The redevelopment was funded by grants from the Federal and Victorian Governments, and the Greater Shepparton City Council. Community contributions were made to complete the fit out and furnishing. Several members of the local community have been honoured for their contributions by having an area named after them; the Muir & McCracken Meeting Room named after long serving members of the Tatura Lions Club and the Pamela Wells children’s zone. A list of supporters will be on display in the library. The Tatura community can be proud of their library and will no doubt make good use of the facilities there. Lois Orr

TATURA COMMUNITY PLAN COMMITTEE Our committee is operating under COVID safe regulations and have been meeting in our wonderful “Tatura Museum”, a place everyone should visit as the upgrade has made displaying all the history so much easier and people friendly. No doubt you have all been admiring the new Mural on the wall outside of the museum, keep your eyes posted for the official unveiling of the plaque on April 18th. Tatura Transition committee held a “Clean up our roadside” day on April 24th- I hope you all took part in this as it all helps in sprucing up our town. This group has set a date for their annual film festival, it will be held Saturday 28th August. Our O’Reilly Road walking path project is almost ready for construction after a few minor holdups. All approvals are complete and currently going through the assessment process to appoint a contractor and order materials. The Tatura Public Art Committee kick off meeting was held on 25th March and planning is now underway on the plan for the future, noting that we would welcome other interested people, Contact Carl Walters 0419118237 if you would like to add to this group and help deliver some improvements to our town. Finally but by no means the least important, is our 10 year review of the Community Plan, this was done 5years ago looking forward until now. Now we do this again looking forward another 5 years. It is interesting to see what has been achieved in the past 5 years. Please remember your input is welcome at all times. Why not come along to our event “What’s Happening in Your Town” later this year, at this event you will hear speakers from almost all the community groups and learn where they are all at after COVID, and what is planned for the future. This year we plan to hold this event in late May – we will keep you posted as to a definite date. Sharon Hopkins

Autumn is a wonderful time of the year, the mornings are crisp, the days are bearable and the deciduous trees are starting to turn their shades of colour as they drop their tired leaves. We had good rain back in early March, the garden and soil are once again looking for some moisture. April is popular with our Harston ladies, six wedding anniversaries’ as well as three Birthdays; including the Birthday of our flower lady Mrs. Margaret Chance, who came to our meeting armed with beautiful bright red Gladioli blooms for those celebrating the occasion to take home. The meeting opened reciting the CWA Collect as normal. We held a minutes silence for a past member, unfortunately as the CWA enters its ninety third year so do the founding and younger set members of this Association. I have a copy of a book I find hard to put down called ‘The Feisty Phoenix’ the real story of the Country Women’s Association of Victoria, on their 80th Anniversary. It says in this book the Younger Set was formed to give incentive to youth.

HARSTON CWA

As we resume our out of lockdown life once again, the ladies are back into their syllabus competitions. This was a decorated egg. Mrs. Glenys Eberle bought an Emu egg much to our surprise; it was a standout amongst our hard boiled chook eggs. The CWA Group area we belong to being Goulburn Valley West, as we are west of the river, recently held a get together luncheon over at The Shepparton RSL. Due to Covid restrictions it was difficult to find a venue that could accommodate our needs, otherwise functions are held within our own stomping ground. Five Harston ladies attended this day out to meet the new CWA Group President Mrs. Barbra Carter of the Mooroopna Branch and other fellow members from within our Group. The annual Women Walk the World event is back on with a fundraising walk starting at Mooroopna Kids Town along the Bush track amongst the mighty red river gums. This is a gold coin donation. It starts at 10.00am on Thursday 29th. Not all our ladies

are up for the walk, some just like a cuppa. WWTW is a global event with the funds raised to enable our poorer countries to have bores and access to water in their home area, where otherwise the women must carry water for a long way from a river or such. This is the work of Associated Countries of the World. ACWW based in London. A bus trip is currently on the agenda to attend CWA Sunday, the first Sunday in May every year. It’s proposed to travel to Shiraz Republic winery near Colbinabbin, the winery being owned by a Uniting Church minister. There he will hold a church service to bless the CWA followed by wood fired Pizza for lunch. A return trip will visit the newly painted Silos at Colbo with a cuppa bought from the Colbinabbin co-op store. This local shop would have closed but for the locals who purchased it. CWA Sunday is May 2nd 2021. *Contact Mrs. Jenny Goonan (Group President) to jump on the Bus. The Harston Branch meet now at the Tatura Bowls Clubrooms, at 10.30am, on the second Monday of each month, opposite the Tatura Primary school where we have ample space to park. We bring our own lunch at the moment, perhaps a shared lunch will happen once things settle, as CWA Sunday approaches; May Peace be with you. In CWA Friendship, Mrs. Marilyn Pell

TATURA MUSEUM The Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum has gained Accreditation by Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria. A professional panel of museum experts has made a final assessment and compiled a positive report on the museum’s operations. The Museum has worked hard to meet set criteria from the National Standards for Australian Museums and Galleries and joins the 82 Victorian collections Accredited in Victoria. Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum has been open to the public since 1988. In this time, the Museum has developed a collection focused on the history of seven local WWII internment and prisoner of war camps, the history of irrigation in the western Goulburn Valley, and the history of Tatura township and district. Through the ongoing commitment of its dedicated volunteers, the Museum has made significant improvements to the preservation and interpretation of the collection, culminating in the 2019 launch of redeveloped exhibition spaces and collection storage facilities. The Museum has created longlasting relationships with former internees and their descendants, and through the use of the Victorian Collections collection management system, has created broad public access to its highly significant collection. The Accreditation panel was impressed with the volunteers’ determination to operate a professional organisation and strong focus on continual improvement, commenting that the Museum’s success in attaining a listing on

the Victorian Heritage Register for the Tatura World War II Internment and POW Camps Collection was a substantial achievement which has led to increased opportunities for the care and interpretation of this outstanding cultural resource. The Victorian-based Museum Accreditation Program (MAP) is now in its 28th year and is run by Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria, the professional association for the museum and gallery sector. There are currently 82 Accredited cultural organisations and a further 3 working towards this goal. To become Accredited, museums spend 2-3 years developing procedures and policies, and practice to meet recognised museum standards. Training, advice, and other resources are made available to assist museums in meeting these standards. Amelia Marra, Co-Manager, Museum Accreditation Program, Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria, says, “We are delighted to recognise the hard work and commitment shown by the team at Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum. Caring for our shared heritage is an important task and by becoming accredited Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum has proven to be a leading museum in Victoria.” A formal presentation of Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum’s Accreditation certificate, will be made at the 2021 Victorian Museum Awards, to be held on 5 October at State Library Victoria.

RODNEY CWA Our Branch now meets at 1.30 pm on the second Thursday of the month and meetings are currently being held at the Middle Pub function room. Group Craft which is held at the Tatura Community House will be hosted by our branch in April, with Mandy organizing the crafts of a Hexagon pin cushion and a recycled video case to be used as a hold all for the car and knitted squares to be made into baby rugs to be donated to charity. Pamper packs of toiletries, hand knitted beanies, Children’s activity packs with an Easter theme which included a colouring book, pencils, craft scissors and a small, crocheted chicken in an egg have all been distributed to local charities for women and children in need over the past month. A large quantity of non-perishable food was collected at our April meeting and this will be given to the charity “Cottage by the Sea” at Queenscliff. This charity was founded in 1890 with the vision that every child deserves a happy and healthy childhood. It provides short term care within a holiday environment, having the beach on its doorstep, to disadvantaged children. It does not rely on Government Funding but donations from various sources. Staff along with a team of volunteers aim to provide those children attending with a life changing experience. The children are chosen with the help of schools and welfare agencies and come from all over Australia. Our Junior CWA members eagerly participated in the making of paper flowers at their last meeting. They also take turns in running the meeting, with Junior members taking the minutes and one acting as the Chairman, great training for future endeavours for many of the girls. Janice Barrette – Publicity Officer

Crime PREVENTION

With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer

THE FRONT DOOR The front door is the first point of call for most thieves when breaking into your property. I run through 5 simple ideas to SECURE YOUR ENTRY POINT and make your home safer. • Secure your door Make sure all the door hinges are on the inside of your entry doors. Install security film on any glass panes, ESPECIALLY if the pane is adjacent to the door handle (stops smash & reach). Fit your doors to the frame snugly. Use long fasteners to reinforce the frame so it can’t be kicked in. Ensure you have well fitted deadlocks and security doors. Use your latched security door to screen visitors before letting them inside. • Point a CCTV camera at the front door Making sure your security camera is focused on the front entry can help in identifying thieves as well as act as deterrent for potential thieves by making it known they are being watched. Clearly display CCTV stickers that usually come with the product, this can also deter offenders if ‘casing’ out the residence. • Keep front yard shrubs and trees neat and tidy By keeping your entry way and front yard clean and maintained, it gives the illusion that the house is occupied. It can also prevent thieves from using overgrown plants or trees as climbing aids to break in or somewhere to hide. The rule of thumb is to reduce all shrubs and hedges to waist height and feather all trees up to 2 metres so you can see through them. • Install LED motion-sensored security lighting Not only can this put off a potential thief, it can make it easier for neighbours to keep an eye on suspicious people near your house when you’re not there. Place any CCTV cameras in conjunction with this lighting. Placement should avoid easy access for offender to damage or remove globes. • Get involved with Neighbourhood Watch Greater Shepparton (follow them on Facebook) and then place their stickers on the mailbox or front window This can be an inexpensive step to take that can potentially ward off would be thieves. ROTARY BOWEL SCAN MONTH The Tatura Rotary Club is once again supporting the community bowel cancer health awareness program. This program runs for the month of May. Kits are available from both the Tatura and Murchison pharmacies. These kits save lives. A few years ago a woman purchased 3 kits, one for herself one for her husband and one for her 40 year old son, not suspecting her son would have any symptoms but it turned out that he did. This test no doubt saved his life. Bowel cancer, if detected early can be treated successfully. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. We thank both the Tatura Pharmacy and the Murchison Pharmacy for their continued support of this important program. P.P. Bill Purcell Rotary Club of Tatura.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few. I’m in the end of our grape harvest as I write this little reflection and the availability of seasonal workers to hand pick our grapes has been a pressing issue. When the harvest is in full swing and tomato growers, orchardists and vineyards all need workers urgently to pick their ripening crops there never seems to be enough workers. And that’s in a “normal” year! The Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted the ability of backpackers and itinerant workers to undertake harvest work. The horticultural industry has depended heavily on backpackers for harvest work. Each year, more than 30,000 backpackers work on farms for 88 days in order to gain an extension

on their Visa but from March 2020, there was an almost 50 per cent decline in the number of backpackers in Australia. With no new working holidaymakers coming in because of border restrictions, there is an acute shortfall. The media have picked up on the situation and over the last few months there has been a recurring story about the shortage of workers available to pick the summer and autumn fruit and vegetable crops around Australia. Personally, I am in a better position than most as I have had the same group of Tongan workers pick, prune and undertake key shortterm work on the vineyard for a number of years. Loyalty, fair dealing and personal relationships still count for something in times like these. But seasonal labour shortages have been around for millennia. When Jesus was sending out his disciples, he reflected that, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.” (Luke 10:2) As in other areas of life, harvest represents that brief moment of abundance when opportunities need to be grasped. At harvest time delay equals loss. The fruit over-ripens, the birds take more than their share, the heads of grain fall to the ground, rain and wind damage nature’s bounty. Opportunity easily becomes a hard-luck story. Frequently the lack of seasonal labour becomes an occasion to berate the poor and unemployed for not jumping at this chance to undertake poorly paid, insecure, physically demanding

work, far from the comforts of home. Sadly, too often seasonal workers are exploited and underpaid. In that same biblical passage, Jesus also said, “…the labourer deserves to be paid.” (Luke 10:7) No-one ever suggests that those of us who are comfortably in secure employment should take leave to undertake this work, which is so important for the life of rural communities. Why is it always “they”, “them”, “the other” who should respond to the urgencies of the plentiful harvest? Harvest is something of a metaphor for the brief moments of opportunity that require timely action to take something that is ephemeral and realise its bounty by preserving it and transforming it into something of lasting benefit. Just as grapes become wine, olives become oil, grains become flour, and tomatoes become passata, (don’t get me started! My good wife has been making sauce). The opportunities to celebrate a wedding, to share deeply with a friend, to bounce a grandchild on your knee or some other meaningful opportunity, are ephemeral moments that will not keep for another day. There are so many ‘harvest” moments in our lives. It is not “they”, “them” or the other who need to respond to them. It’s you and it’s me. “Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.” This is the gospel, and it’s good news. Brian Spencer, Minister, Tatura Uniting Church.

Banksia The Banksia genus would easily be one of the best known Australian plant groups. Banksia is named after the English botanist Sir Joseph Banks. There are well over 100 species of Banksia growing all around Australia, most being shrubs or small trees. Banksia are best known for their large round or cylindrical flower head comprising hundreds of individual flowers. When flowering is over the fruits (known as follicles) develop usually together to form a hard woody cone similar to a pine cone.

We currently have a number of Banksia species for sale including some small shrubs such as B. Ericafolia (Heath Banksia) and B. Spinulosa (Hairpin Banksia) which would look great in any garden and some larger shrubs or small trees such as B. Integrifolia (Coast Banksia), B. Marginata (Silver Banksia) and B. Victoriae (Woolly Orange Banksia). These larger Banksia can be grown as a good screening plant. All the Banksia species are rich in nectar attracting an array of birds and wildlife into the garden. We have a special sale on for Mother’s Day

so if your mother has a garden come on in and get her a Banksia.

's Dennis Booth R A I F DINKUM! You would think any place that is used to film two romantic movies in the 60’s would be definitely worth visiting… perhaps but initially you might want to turn around on your voyage. In 1963 I landed a job as Sporting Editor of the relatively new daily newspaper The Hong Kong Star and as I landed for the first time at the infamous Kai Tak Airport, on embarking there seemed to be a distinct smell of rotting garbage. Kai Tak by the way was the only airport back then and planes had to fly very low over apartments to get onto the tarmac. So low it seemed if you put your hand out a window you would help Mrs. Wong put out the washing. Hong Kong then was a British Colony and so had a distinctly British feel right down to British Police and the racing club was named the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club with very definite pukka sahib officials. But there was also a smattering of Americans, Canadians and of course Australians, I can’t say I enjoyed Hong Kong. Even then it was a busy place, and it just seemed a day-to-day existence but at least it was modern and in its often humid climate, most places of work had air conditioning. But before I left, I had some free time from work and an Aussie friend and film buff on the island asked me if I would like a few days work as a film extra. In those days Hong Kong had a very big film industry run by two Chinese brothers Run Run and Run Me Shaw who seemed to have a new film in Cantonese or Mandarin every fortnight for local consumption. I was to take part in a British made film called The Vengeance of Fu Man Chu starring Christopher Lee. My part took a whole minute as I monstered some drunks in a bar fight. So good was I that when I got back to Australia and in Darwin, I told my friends when the movie appeared at the local drive-in to come and watch the action. Sad to say we were talking the moment my scene came up, so we missed it. This was a pity because the movie I think was rated as one star or ridiculously poor. It is why I decided among things to come back to Australia and resume my journalistic career in Darwin. I might add that was mid-1966 and all I knew of the place was that it had been bombed in WWII. Boy was I in for a surprise.

A HIDDEN TREASURE OPENS IN TATURA Have you checked out Oakridge Designs shop at 129 Hogan Street yet? It certainly contains much more than first impressions give. Meghann Talarico has opened this shop recently after running the business from her home for the last two and a half years. The shop is basically a home decor and giftware store but also offers fun filled Hands on Workshops in furniture painting (priced at $95, which includes materials and morning or afternoon tea), using Australian made Eco Friendly Chalk, Mineral & Milk Paints that will give you a professional and durable finish. These workshops give the confidence and lifelong skills to transform your home, or maybe some outdoor furniture, for a fraction of the cost of buying new. Meghann can help you create different finishes from Hamptons to French Country, Shabby Chic, rustic and more. Artisan 'Real Rust' is a simple 2 step process that enables you to rust just about anything, authentically creating rust patina to industrial chic objects, decor items and exterior garden projects. Check out Facebook for details of upcoming events and enjoy being creative while in a fully supported environment in the Tatura based studio. Meghann can host birthday workshops, hens and even kitchen teas - whatever the occasion (with a minimum of three people preferred). I was surprised to find a huge variety of goods for sale when in her shop - shortbreads, jams, relish, chutney, honey, herbal blend teas, skin care range, chocolate sauces, toffeed balsamic syrup, drawer scenters, bath salts, scrubs, shower steamers, soaps, heat and eye packs. I had never heard of shower steamers and was interested to learn they are like bath bombs but for the shower. With beautiful aromatic scents, these assist with relaxation as you inhale the benefits from the floor of your

shower. There is also a section for guys in the store, thoughtful gifts that men can use that they wouldn't indulge in themselves. Her Mere botanicals are very popular for new mothers. Every product is naturopath formulated by Kate, a former Shepparton resident, to support a mother’s body and her baby using organic ingredients with mother earth in mind. Available in this range are birth kits, post-partum bath salts, raspberry leaf tea, stretch mark cream and perineal massage oil and spray. If you just cannot decide what to purchase for someone, maybe one of the Gift Vouchers would suit better. Born on the Mornington Peninsula, Meghann moved as an infant with her family to the Goulburn Valley. She married Graeme, a dairy farmer and they live on a 30 acre property between Tatura and Murchison in a 1903 homestead. The couple have always had a fascination for vintage and old homesteads so the current home, "Oakridge", suits them beautifully. Their first home was on Dhurringile Road and instead of buying new furniture Meghann recycled what they had and found the milk paint and chalk paint blended well with their tastes. When the projects were finished she always felt she would eventually be teaching people what she had learned in the process. Though not well known locally, Australia wide Meghann has a presence, with inquiries from NSW and a lot of clients coming from Melbourne for a "day out with the girls". Wanting more of a community presence she took on this shop when it became available. Meghann and Graeme have two daughters, aged four and seven, and have quite a menagerie at their home with a miniature pony, dogs, chickens and cows that they enjoy very much together. Meghann is also a theatre

Meghann Talarico nurse at the Shepparton Private Hospital. In such a high stress job she finds the shop and painting an excellent creative outlet. In the future she is hoping to have continued support to expand her product range and the main thing in her store is focusing to source Australian made as much as possible, as well as supporting small boutique businesses. The shop is open from 9.30 a.m. til 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as well as on Saturdays from 9.30 a.m. til 1 p.m. Meghann can be contacted by phone (0437 086 463) or email (oakridge.designs@ outlook.com) and one can always check out her website (www.oakridgedesigns.com.au). Matters Following our call out for books with Australian poetry last month I am pleased to say we have been given three. Thanks to the lovely ladies who for these books – we will use them all. Birthday cakes have been enjoyed over recent weeks – a citrus cake for Phillip, and I am looking forward to a ginger fluff for my 93rd birthday. We have made our last lot of chutney for the season; thanks to our customers for spending up. We celebrated St Patrick’s Day with colourful outfits being worn by both staff and residents. Our Easter raffle went well and raised over $500. Winners were 1st Julie McInnes; 2nd Ruth McCracken; 3rd Tom Devine. Well the impossible has happened – Richmond was beaten. Those who know me know I am an avid Richmond supporter. I must admit Sydney deserved the win. The fireworks on Easter Sunday were wonderful and it was great to see lots of lovely people and their children attend. If you are like me and enjoyed Guy Fawke’s nights when you were young then it was a real treat indeed. Some of us even had a turn setting off the crackers. The location on the Sacred Heart School ground was great and the beautiful colours at the end of the show were spectacular. Thanks for such a pleasant night. I hope you all had a wonderful Easter just like I did Ruth

LION JACK MUIR OAM (Dec.) Tatura Lions were extremely pleased to welcome Merrilyn Muto (Jack Muir’s daughter) at our meeting on 23rd March 2021. Merrilyn was quite sure that Jack, who was a charter member of Tatura Lions 50 years ago this year would have approved, so she took the initiative to contact PDG & President Glenda McLeod to make the necessary arrangements. Sadly Jack passed away early in 2020 and due to COVID-19 we were unable to participate in farewelling the longest active member of Tatura Lions. Thank you so much Merrilyn for your kind initiative. It made it possible to think fondly of our past colleague during the circulation of his OAM.

TATURA GARDEN CLUB Tatura Garden Club members enjoyed being together at the March meeting after being in recess for the past 12 months. Prior to the meeting, we enjoyed a walk around the lovely garden of a new member, Kerry McEnvoy. Thank you Kerry for having us. It was a lovely start to the evening. Our members are very generous in sharing their gardens with one another prior to meetings during daylight savings. We are fortunate to have some very keen young gardeners in our club and their enthusiasm is very stimulating to the older members who are only too pleased to share their acquired knowledge with them. The club endeavours to provide a variety of good guest speakers for their meetings. Monthly meet and greet outings and visiting places of interest to our garden lovers are proving to be very popular. Our recent visit to the ‘Billabong Garden Complex’ in Shepparton was a great success. A large percentage of plants in the nursery are grown on the premises, providing employment and training for those with a disability and enabling them to learn new skills and earn a wage. Meetings of the Tatura Garden Club are held at 7pm on the third Monday of the month at the Tatura Community House, Kerferd St., Tatura. New members are always welcome. TATURA GARDEN CLUB SEMINAR Due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown in 2020 the very popular annual Garden Seminar had to be cancelled. Arrangements have been made to go ahead with the seminar this year. It will be held on June 9th 2021 at the Ballantyne Centre, Tatura. Guest speaker for the day is Simon Rickard. Simon is a passionate plantsman and gardener. A new website has been created at www. zerocarbontatura.org, which contains information on the group, and where you can view the Stage 1 Plan. A new email address has also been created so that you can contact the group directly. “We know that the goals of the plan will only be achieved through the engagement, support and actions of the community as a whole, which includes individuals, families, industry, organisations and government” ZCT convenor Terry Court says. “ZCT encourages everyone to become involved and take action to make Tatura

PROBUS CLUB Our Probus Club finally had an Annual General Meeting on 25th March, having had to cancel the AGM last year due to Covid. We have just under 50 members in our Club at present and we had a very good attendance at our AGM. Brian O’Meara comes in as our President this year, while Wendy Wilson and Geoff McMullen stay in as Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Neta Kirby was our Guest Speaker and it was very interesting to hear of the work she does with all ages, although she said she is concentrating on children from 2 years old to 12 at present. TATURA R.S.L. In the last edition of the Bulletin, you the readers, were informed that in 2020, five additional plaques were added to the Memorial Stone Wall at Private Robert Mactier V.C. Memorial Garden. These were for those who served in WWII. Further works in 2020, to the Memorial precinct included a new print upgrade to all seven (7) information boards on both sides of the Statue. The perspex protectors covering these were made more rigid and tamper proof. The Tatura R.S.L. gives thanks to Shepparton Council for their financial contribution and Michel Signs for the reprints. Anzac Day 2021 will have been and gone by the time this edition of the Bulletin is circulated. At the time of formulating this article, the Tatura R.S.L.is hopeful a commemorative service will take place. As of February 2021, Vietnam veteran Robin Fairchild, a long time R.S.L. member at King Island, is our new President. That role became vacant as a result of veteran Rod Schubert stepping down. The membership congratulates Robin for taking on that role and thanks Rod for his commitment and guidance whilst in the chair. Garth McMahon was elected as Vice President, Mary Coad as Secretary and veteran Mark Sommers as Treasurer. In effect, there were some 10 positions within the Tatura R.S.L. organisation that were filled. The membership thanks all who have volunteered to take on extra duties in their respective roles. DOUBLE THE FUN, DOUBLE THE FITNESS If you’ve ever felt that slogging it solo at the gym or running laps isn’t for you, you’re not alone and you don’t have to be! Group fitness exercises are considered some of the most effective, fun and beneficial ways to get fit and create a healthier lifestyle. This is because sessions are led by a fitness expert so you work smarter, not harder. Fitness instructors want to help you with your form and to find variations that make movements easier for you, because they want to see people being active and happy. Exercising in an environment like this can lower your risk of injury, motivate you to work harder than you normally would alone and releases oodles of feel-good hormones. What keeps participants coming back are the friendships and solidarity built between classmates and their instructors too. A support crew like this can be a huge driving force in staying active as well as staying social. This makes group fitness a great way to meet new people and to challenge yourself. We know that regular exercise can improve your quality of life by reducing the impact of many preventable diseases and enhancing strength, mobility and fitness. It can be hard to stay motivated exercising at home or in the gym, but group fitness offers plenty of support, variety and a whole lot of fun for all fitness levels. If you haven’t trained in a while or you’re new to a gym setting, it’s normal to feel a little nervous. Remember, every expert was once a newbie. Aquamoves has one of the community’s largest studio spaces and as Shepparton’s home of health and wellbeing; they offer a wide-range of classes to suit all fitness needs and abilities. Whether you are seeking the simple joy of movement in a welcoming environment or looking to make supportive new friends, Aquamoves is one organisation who can help. To learn more, get in touch with Aquamoves at 5832 9400, or visit their website for more info and group fitness timetables. Deanne Jeffers

SALMON PATTIES

Bulletin QUIZ

This is the easiest recipe for salmon patties with not having to boil potatoes first and I find using the instant potato powder makes them much lighter. Using panko breadcrumbs also gives them a nicer finish in my opinion. Ingredients: Can of Salmon Deb Potato Red Onion Salt & Pepper Panko (Breadcrumbs) Method: Drain salmon. Make up what quantity of potato mash you wish (via packet instructions). Chop red onion finely. Mix all ingredients together, adding salt and pepper to taste. Form into patties and roll in panko crumbs. Shallow fry both sides. Janice Dreyer

QUIZ answers 1b – Hippopotamus 2d – 360 3a – Sahara Desert 4c – Knee (your kneecap) 5b – Omega 6a – On the first Sunday after the full moon 7d – The irrational fear of cats 8c – Kitten 9b – C.S. Lewis 10d – Angel Falls Scoring. 0–2. Struggle Street. I threw in a couple of easier questions this month and you still couldn’t make it to Bland Street. Well good on you for at least giving it a go. There’s not much else to be said really apart from the fact that you should have answered (b) to every question, thereby getting three correct answers. 3-5. Bland Street. We certainly can’t make an exception of your score this month because you, my friend, are one of the unexceptionals. You are part of the mob, the bland majority, the beige brigade who don’t stand out from the crowd because you are the crowd. Without you, of course, the above average people wouldn’t be able to do their bit of standing out. So take heart, you have a purpose in life. 6-7. Above Average. Better than most but not quite as good as some. I know there were a couple of questions that you should have known but the fact is, you didn’t. 8-9. Smarty Pants. Oh, to be intelligent and to know it, the definition of smarty pants. An excellent score you should be proud of (and you are) although, if the truth be known, there were a couple of lucky guesses but we won’t mention those. 10. Genius. Well done! There were a couple of difficult questions this month designed to separate the goats from the sheep. And you know what GOAT stands for don’t you? Greatest Of All Time. That’s you. So now you can proudly tell people that you are a goat. John Kriesfeld

Winton Wetland Walkers

SHEPPARTON ADVENTURE CLUB Winton wetlands Spit and Lunette Walk Wed 24th March 2021 After meeting at the Winton Wetlands Mokoan café the 14 keen walkers convoyed to the start of the walk at Bill Friday Swamp. From there we set off on the aptly named Spit and Lunette walk which extends along the sandy spit out into the wetland between Winton and Greens swamp. The trail follows the Eastern side of the Winton wetland for about 3.5 kms to a point where there are displays documenting the indigenous and European settlement of the area. A feature being the long-necked turtle installation by the local Yorta Yorta artists and the ancient “navigational” tree. From this point a more defined track heads on for the last 1.5 km to the headland at the end of the spit. From here there is a wonderful panorama across the whole wetlands to the Strathbogies, Victorian Alps and Chesney Vale hills. Many kangaroos were taking advantage of the green feed on the wetland floor and many different birds were seen. This proved a very pleasant spot to have lunch before retracing our steps back along the spit to our cars. Although overcast and initially cool, the weather held off after the previous few days of heavy rain. The overcast day meant colours were more muted and perhaps a little less dramatic than when the sun shines across the landscape or when there is a large expanse of water in the lower areas. However, it was nonetheless a very picturesque background to our walk. We concluded our day by enjoying the hospitality of the Mokoan Café and the view from their huge windows that framed the landscape across from where we had walked to the spit headland. Dianne Hanna

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle

“Fred and Garry have gone off to play golf Merle,” said Agnes looking very pleased, “so let’s sit quietly and have a catch up. It seems so long since we have. With the boys out of the way we can just talk freely.” I sighed. Agnes is so transparent. “It’s not really that long Agnes, and you really just want to know how my dinner with Garry went, don’t you?” “Oh that? Yes, well I suppose you could tell me about that if you like.” She then frowned at me and said, “Of course I want to know! Why would you make me wait so long Merle?” Agnes hates missing out so I guess I did take my time getting back to her. Although she does know just about everything I do anyway, especially if Garry is involved, even if I don’t tell her. How she loves to be informed. “Not much to tell,” I said very casually. “We just ate a nice dinner and it was quite a pleasant meal, well cooked in fact. Because Garry paid, which was the deal you know, I also decided to have dessert.” Agnes laughed happily. “Yes of course. I think you did mention that you would get your money’s worth Merle. He is quite the generous man, isn’t he?” Always fishing for me to compliment Garry, Agnes likes to add these little bits here and there. Just because she has a man does not mean we all need to be paired up like some dolphin or other beast that mates for life. After all, I am a very busy woman. I don’t really have time to be constantly entertaining other people. “I heard your sister turned up,” continued Agnes, “That must have been a bit awkward, considering how disturbing and oddly behaved she has been.” She has obviously snooped around for all the gossip and knows everything already, so why ask about it? “Not at all, Agnes,” I replied calmly. “Garry certainly put her in her place and ushered her off. It was all done and dusted within a minute.” Agnes quietly smiled with ‘I told you so’ look in her eyes. She is such a strange lady. We ate cake and drank tea and made idle talk with me deliberately avoiding any further talk about Garry. Needless to say, I couldn’t be bothered enquiring about Fred. However, our quiet afternoon tea was abruptly shattered when the front door suddenly burst open and Fred stormed inside and threw his gold clubs on the floor and snarled, “Oh, that stupid man! I will never play golf with him again.” He then just stood there breathing deeply without even acknowledging us ladies, and then disappeared up the hallway. Agnes and I looked at each other in stunned silence with Agnese’s eyes twice their normal size. What an interesting situation. I was

unsure what to say to Agnes and she eventually got up and followed him up the hallway. It seemed that Fred and Garry had had a row and could not help but hope Garry had given him what for. After a while Agnes returned, looking relieved. “Sorry about that Merle,” she said apologetically. “What was that all about?” I asked casually. She gave an insipid laugh. “I thought Fred must have fallen out with Garry, but thank goodness he was referring to Derrick Farnuckle. That man truly is insufferable. He apparently joined in with Garry and Fred without being invited and then proceeded to annoy the living daylights out of them both. Such an arrogant man to boot, I am glad I was not there.” I laughed inside thinking about what Agnes would have said or done if she had been there. She is far too nice to be rude to him. She probably would have offered him tea and sandwiches. At this point, something that strangely felt like relief washed over me. I was not sure what that was all about although I am aware of Derrick and how annoying he is. His wife is a sticky beak and a know-all as well. I certainly avoid her like the plague if I see her out anywhere. They are obviously well suited to each other. After all, who else would want them? After Agnes’s little fright I thought I would cheer her up. “By the way Agnes, Garry and I have agreed to go out again for another meal. I decided to do that on our last outing. He will pay as usual.” Agnes’s mood immediately lifted. “That sounds wonderful Merle.” Well, I thought wonderful was a bit over the top. “Yes, if it is pleasant like last time, then it will be fine Agnes.” “Oh, let’s have another cup of tea to celebrate,” gushed Agnes as she almost danced off into the kitchen. I sat for a while and listened politely as Agnes rattled on about their music careers and their bookings to do live music concerts. I thought that there were more performance artists than musical artists, but I decided not to mention it. Why be mean? No reason to, really. A short time later Fred came out from the other room, clearly much happier now and said “Gidday Merle. I heard you and Garry had a lovely date night the other night.” He then winked at me. Oh, why does that man rile me so much, and why does everything he does and says annoy me? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

MOVE YOUR CHAKRAS TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE A new health and wellbeing class has come to town – welcome, Chakradance! Many of us are worn out, run down, stressed, anxious, depressed, or tired and in pain, emotionally and physically. Chakradance aims to help us fix some of these things, by getting our internal energy into focus and back into alignment. That sounds great… but what exactly IS Chakradance? Chakradance is a movement practice for the body and the soul. It combines spontaneous dance, guided imagery and music to promote an increased sense of well-being. The music is the key, as it resonates deeply with each of the seven major chakras – the energy centres that integrate and regulate our physical, mental and emotional energies. Each chakra vibrates at its own frequency, and music is able to use these sound vibrations to tune and balance each of these energy centres. Many people who Chakradance feel transformed by the experience. Some find it spiritual, others therapeutic or emotionally clearing, and some just find it a refreshing, relaxing and energising haven away from the stresses of daily life. It’s not about steps or performance (you move with your eyes closed in a darkened room). It’s about freedom of expression. There is no right way to do it as everyone has his or her own rhythm and movement. Chakradancer feedback: “It calms my mind and helps me sleep all night.” “It’s amazing how it heals my chakras. It also makes me dream every single night, and I dream a lot about traveling. Now that we cannot travel overseas it connects me with my family in my dreams. It is very special.” “I have experienced calmness, clarity and acceptance. I feel at peace with my life.” Please contact Chakradance facilitator Robin if you have any questions or would like to book your space in a session. Robin: 0448 509 532 / chakradancewithrobin@ outlook.com.

THE BLESSING OF THE BIKES 2021 It was the sound of engines revving rather than church bells in the afternoon of Sunday 11th April at All Saints Tatura Anglican Church as the annual Blessing of the Bikes returned to town. The Northern Spyder Riders showcased their unique 3-wheel bikes, whilst the Central Victoria Ulysses Branch presented their 2-wheel motorbikes. Two vintage cars and a tri-car brought the total vehicle count on Francis Street to more than 20. Local bike enthusiasts joined riders who had braved the cold weather and travelled from as far as Ballarat, Bendigo and Katamatite. The riders were warmed with hot coffee from local Fast Brew Coffee Co., a sausage sizzle lunch prepared by the All Saints congregation and community volunteers (Angelo & Janice) whilst kids were given a "tour" of the Tatura ambulance by local rep Ben. Rev. Simba Musvamhiri and Bishop Matt Brain (Anglican Diocese of Bendigo) wearing Northern Spyder Rider t-shirts easily blended in with the crowd and enjoyed meeting such a diverse group of people. At 2pm, Rev Simba welcomed the crowd, and sought God’s blessing over the riders primarily for their safety and protection on the open road. Mid-way through the outdoor service, the riders brought their helmets and placed them on the footpath – a moments silence was observed to remember all who had died whilst riding. Bishop Matt then consecrated the water and moved to the centre of the road with Rev. Simba to commence the blessing. The riders revved their engines and rode past the ministers in procession to receive a sprinkle of holy water and blessing: “May God bless you and keep you safe on this bike. May you encounter the risen Lord in your travels, in the freedom of the open road, in the fellowship of other bikers and in each person you meet. May the Lord be with you at home and on the road, and with you on your journeys. May God’s mercy, grace and love shine upon you, now and forever. Amen.” When the riders reconvened, a final blessing was proclaimed and the service concluded with a celebratory cheer. The “Reverend’s Award” for the bike that caught the eye of the Minister was awarded to Tatura local, Ron Maskell by Bishop Matt. His red CanAm Sypder Bike was chosen as it matched the red stoles worn by the minsters which symbolise the calling of the Holy Spirit. Preliminary plans have already begun for the Blessing of the Bikes 2022 with the Secretary of the Northern Spyder Riders, Ian Carruthers. As the riders left the church, the words of the final prayer rang out …until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hands, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Rev. Simba Musvamhiri (All Saints Tatura Anglican Church)

MURCHISON PRIMARY SCHOOL

Lyla getting stuck into craft time

What an end to Term 1 at Murchison Primary School. On Thursday 1st April students arrived at school in casual clothes, giving a gold coin donation to the Good Friday Appeal (Royal Children’s Hospital). Ms Thorne put on a great performance with the School Band – showing off a magnificent repertoire of songs including Hot Cross Buns and Pirates of the Caribbean. The State School Spectacular dancers exhibited some of their recently learned moves too! The Kinder students came over and joined in the Hat Parade. It was marvellous to see how many students crafted a hat at home and brought it to wear in the parade – decorations ranged from classy to extraordinarily over the top! Following the show and parade, students broke into smaller mixed age groups to take part in activities. Card making, cooking, Easter egg hunt and music… What an end to Term 1! Elly French

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL

AROUND TATURA

The end of term 1 2021, came around quite quickly at Dhurringile Primary School, with a number of excursions and incursions. Athletic Sports On the last Monday of term, we participated in the local small schools’ athletic sports at McEwen Reserve in Shepparton. Our sports are a fun day however the older students are able to qualify for the Zone Athletic Sports later this year. The Dhurringile students are to be congratulated on their efforts and behaviour on the day. Gardening The Woolworth’s seed packets came at just the right time for us to start our Autumn and Winter plantings. We planted out the packets into indoor greenhouses to shoot, then transplanted into our vegie patch. Hopefully, we will have lots of produce to cook at school and share with the community. Easter Parade This year, we made our Easter hats at school. Each student designed then constructed their own hat for our parade. This was followed by our annual Easter egg hunt. STEM SUDOKU No. 59 Building domino tracks was our STEM project in the last week of term. Our research into domino tracks showed some amazing projects that had taken weeks to complete and highlighted that dominoes can fall at any time and we need resilience to keep trying. We designed our tracks and had a go at making them. We soon discovered that you need to be very careful around dominoes so they don’t fall over. Enrolments Dhurringile PS is currently taking enrolments for 2022 Foundation students as well as for students in other year levels. If you would like to find out what we can offer for your child, please contact the school on 0418 383 064 to arrange a tour and chat. Lisa Wilson Proud Principal @ Dhurringile PS

More than 120 people attended the blessing of the Australian and Italian flags by Fr P Collins, of Tatura, at the Tatura Bocce Club rooms recently. The evening was organised by the Tatura Senior Italian Citizens Club to highlight the bond that exists between the cultural traditions of Australia and Italy. Official guests included Rodney Shire President, Cr Kevin Walker, Crs Cherie and Andrew Crawford and the Mayor and Mayoress of Shepparton, Cr David Piper and Mrs Piper. The Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District was represented by Assunta Curtis, Cav Renzo Piroli, OAM, and Emilio Fiorenza. Mr Piroli also represented the Italian Consul (Melbourne) and expressed his support for the efforts of the Senior Italians in organising activities aimed at improving the social quality of life between elderly citizens. Cr Walker and Cr Piper acknowledged the invaluable contribution of the Italian community to both the Rodney Shire and the City of Shepparton. Cr Walker expressed his deep interest in assisting the Italian people of Tatura and praised their willingness to work with the shire to develop better community relations and facilities to meet Italian community needs. The Mayor of Shepparton, Cr David Piper, spoke of his firsthand experience as a migrant from the United Kingdom and emphasised the importance of activities that enhanced the cultural traditions of people from other countries. President of the Tatura Senior Italian Club, Agata Formica, gave a most enthusiastic performance as MC. She gave a brief account of the club's history and thanked all present for attending and for their support. The evening was a total success and participants were treated to an array of Italian food. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are plans to produce one million litres of beer in Tatura over the next 12 months. Brewery equipment now being installed and refurbished at Tatura's Bartlett Cordial Factory should be operational by the end of May. Master brewer and factory manager, Kongteck Pwee, said light, regular and premium beer would be produced at the factory and packaged in bottles, stubbies and tins. He hoped it would also be available on tap at hotels in the town and around the Goulburn Valley. If successful, the beer will be marketed in Melbourne and interstate. Up to four million litres of beer would be produced a year at the brewery within three to four years if sales warranted. The beer will be made to suit "pub drinkers" and

resemble known popular brands. Mr Pwee said the four people currently employed in soft drink, mineral water, soda water and cordial production and packaging would also work in the brewery section of the business. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Tatura Museum will be open every afternoon this week between 2pm and 4 pm for Heritage Week. Also, the new room being constructed by voluntary labour only. at the rear of the present building is nearing completion. It will house displays relating to the war-time Prisoner of War and Internment camps in this area. Tatura and District Historical Society members would welcome any memorabilia of the camps either as gifts to the Museum, or on loan for the display. Photos. Paintings, craft work and woodwork have already been donated by ex-internees, POWs, and members of the Army garrison. Members of the Temple Society, who were interned in Camp 3 between 1941 and 1946 will be returning to Tatura on September 21 and 22 for the 50th anniversary of their arrival in Australia, and the new room will be officially opened on Sunday, September 22 to coincide with this anniversary. Almost all of the Temple Society families settled in Australia after the war and became valued citizens con e tributing greatly to our cultural heritage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tatura's Linda Henderson has recently been judged the Australian Champion Rose Grower, competing against growers from every state in Australia. The Rose Society holds the championships in a different state each year. This year it was held at the Melbourne Town Hall. The show is held over two days and at the end, all the roses are auctioned with the proceeds going to the Royal Children's Hospital. This year's show was officially opened by Mrs McCaughey, the wife of the Governor General. Mrs Henderson had to submit six distinct varieties and if the magnificent blooms that still remain in her garden are any indication of the quality of her winning ones it is not too surprising that she won first and second in the Australian Championship. Mrs Henderson, not being content to win the Australian, also won the Victorian and Country Championships as well. It has certainly been an exciting time for Mrs Henderson and her husband Wal as they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last weekend.

Tatura Parkvilla ‘first cab off the rank’ as GV Health commences COVID-19 vaccination program to public aged care residents GV Health has commenced its COVID-19 vaccination program to the public residential aged care sector as part of the Commonwealth Government’s phase 1a COVID-19 vaccine rollout. Residents at the Parkvilla Aged Care Facility at the Tatura campus of GV Health started receiving COVID-19 vaccinations as of Wednesday 24 March 2021.
