WALK TO SCHOOL PROGRAM Greater Shepparton City Council will join VicHealth in its mission to get kids walking, riding and scooting to school as part of the health promotion foundation’s annual Walk to School program. Every October, Walk to School month encourages kids and families to get active on the trip to and from school to help build healthy habits for life.

Greater Shepparton City Council will work with local primary schools to deliver a range of activities encouraging more families to walk, ride or scoot to school this October thanks to funding of $10,000 from VicHealth To support the program, Greater Shepparton City Council will develop safe travel maps including drop/park walk zones supported by decals and stencil art along footpaths and develop a promotional video campaign featuring local primary schools. Local kids are also encouraged to put their creativity on show by decorating their shoes, bikes and scooters to show off on the way to school.

Kaye Thomson, Director Community said VicHealth’s Walk to School program is a free, easy and fun way for kids to get active and learn healthy habits for life. “Greater Shepparton City Council is delighted to support Walk to School in Greater Shepparton to encourage more kids to be active on the way to and from school,” Kaye said. “Last year 7 local schools participated in this great VicHealth initiative, and we encourage more primary schools to get involved this year to make Walk to School bigger and better.”

VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said each year the Walk to School program continues to grow with more and more schools taking part with fantastic results. “Walking, riding or scooting to and from school every day is an easy way to make physical activity part of kids’ daily life which is why our Walk to School program is so important,” Ms Rechter said. “Last year more than 140,000 kids from over 750 schools across Victoria took part in Walk to School and walked the equivalent of two return trips to the moon. This year we hope to get even more schools involved in the program to improve the health of our kids.”

Local schools who take part in Walk to School will also be in the running to win specialised AFL Footy Clinics with an AFL or AFLW player.

COUNCIL ADOPTS NEW PLANS FOR TOWNSHIPS Council resolved to adopt the Greater Shepparton Townships Framework Plan Review 2018 (the Review) at the Ordinary Council Meeting held on September 18. The Review updates and builds upon the Greater Shepparton Housing Strategy 2011, focusing on the nine townships that the Housing Strategy provided framework plans for, excluding the Shepparton, Kialla and Mooroopna urban areas.

Importantly, the Review assesses each township against a number of criteria, recognising that each township is different and a ‘one size fits all approach’ is not always appropriate. Following a Council resolution in March to endorse a draft document and release it for public comment, extensive public consultation was undertaken in collaboration with the community plan committees for the townships.

Greater Shepparton Mayor, Councillor Kim O’Keeffe said, “Community, agency and stakeholder consultation has been an integral part of the Review. This has offered an important opportunity to engage with members of the community for input into future long-term identification and provision of residential land within Greater Shepparton. Key recommendations of the Review include updating the Framework Plans to address changes since the Housing Strategy was developed in 2011, identifying additional residential land in Tatura, and the need for Growth Plans to be prepared that consider the opportunities and constraints of each township and utilise a holistic approach to shape future growth. It is important that growth is maintained on a number of fronts, providing choice and variety in the housing market and accommodating projected population growth over at least a 15-year period. Although the Shepparton, Mooroopna and Kialla urban areas will accommodate the majority of this population growth, the outlying townships continue to provide for a variety of housing and lifestyle opportunities, as well as supporting growth in our farming areas with community facilities, schools, local shops and industries.”

The revised Framework Plans for the townships will be implemented into the Greater Shepparton Planning Scheme through a future planning scheme amendment.

TATURA FRIENDS OF TIMOR LESTE Thank you to everyone who supported our last coffee morning, and those who have helped by donating items. We have been kept busy over the past 12 months sewing and knitting for the babies of Timor Leste. The latest request from the Neonate Intensive Care Unit at the National Hospital was for bonnets made of fine soft knit fabric for babies who need oxygen.

We reduced a commercial pattern, but when we received a prototype from the hospital, we saw ours were way too large!

As well we have made soft cotton padding to protect the babies' skin while they in the 'skin to skin' kangaroo care slings. Washable covers for the kangaroo care chairs are also on the wish list. Eye-masks for babies needing phototherapy for jaundice are always needed as well as pinafore/ nighties and wraps/cot sheets. We have tried some simple nappies and binders, too. These are mostly for Mission Aviation Fellowship to pass on to mothers in remote villages.

On the knitting scene, we have made baby beanies for the National Hospital and one of the Catholic Maternity Hospitals as well as singlets to go with the nappies. We are holding another Coffee Morning on Tuesday, November 13 at 10.30 am at the Tatura Community House, Casey Street, Tatura. Entry is $5. We need to raise funds to cover the cost of freight via Rotary's Donations in Kind containers. There will be a trading table, lucky door prizes and the guest speaker will be Noreen Smith who has just returned from a visit to Timor Leste.

Please come and help us to support the babies, families and people with disabilities in this, the poorest of all Asian countries, and our close neighbour.

DOING IT FOR KIM On Friday, September 15, Gillian and Jamie Hall completed their fundraising effort for the ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ by having their heads shaved at the Tatura Primary School. Their activity has been called ‘Doing it for Kim.’ Kim Taylor is the mother of Cooper, who is Jamie’s best friend at school is undergoing treatment for leukaemia. Many people have supported Gillian and Jamie in their efforts to raise $3,000 towards Kim’s treatment.

The consultation stage is part of our Greater Shepparton Community Safety Network, a partnership project between the community, Victoria Police, Victorian Government, Crime Stoppers Victoria and Neighbourhood Watch.

The Community Safety Network will support police and community understanding of local crime issues, influence local policing priorities and deliver community safety improvement projects.

We have increased our connection with the Tatura community and provided opportunities for the community to have a say on the key issues within Greater Shepparton. We know that Tatura people have great insight into their local community and ideas about ways to prevent crime.

ROYAL PROBLEMS We tend to think of members of the royal family as having easy and indulgent lives. We think this because it’s actually true. Compared to us common folk, they live pampered lives and from time to time, they feel it is their royal duty to tell us how to live our lives. However, it is not all beer and skittles being a member of royalty (actually it’s wine and venison) as these following excerpts from history will attest.

However, it’s interesting to note that many of these ancient royals would fit seamlessly into our current royal family.

1. Queen Christina of Sweden, who ruled in the 1600s, had a tiny problem, she was absolutely terrified of fleas. She was so afraid that she commissioned the construction of a tiny cannon for her bedroom which she used to fire extremely small cannon balls at the pesky critters. There is no report on how many fleas she actually hit but apparently it was an activity that she spent many hours on each day.

2. Queen Mary I of England and Ireland (15161558) was a Catholic who had Protestants tortured and killed. She was nicknamed Bloody Mary for her actions and had the nursery rhyme ‘Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary’ written about her. Her actions also inspired the cocktail.

3. When she was a child, Princess Alexandria of Bavaria (1826-1875) became convinced that she had swallowed a grand piano.

4. Spanish Queen Juana was so in love with her husband Phillip that when he passed away in 1506, she kept his coffin with her for the rest of her life, refusing to allow him to be buried.

Hopefully the coffin was sealed.

5. You may have thought you had a few problems on your wedding day but I’m sure you’ll agree they were nothing compared to Princess Maria del Pozzo della Cisterno. In 1867 she married her fiancé Amadeo, the future king of Italy but unfortunately there were a few mishaps. Her wardrobe mistress hanged herself, the gate-keeper cut his throat, someone got caught under the wheels of the honeymoon train and died, an associate of the king fell from his horse to his death, and to make a bad day even worse, the best man shot himself.

6. Isabella, daughter of Charles Vi of France, was a true child bride. She was wed in 1396 at the age of 7 to 29-year-old King Richard III of England to cement a political alliance. Just three years later, in 1399, Richard was usurped

by King Henry IV and died in 1400, leaving Isabella a widow at the tender age of 10.

Having Some Trivial Fun Seniors Week 2018: The annual Seniors Trivia afternoon was held on October 9. The organisers had prepared a great selection of trivia including Australian geography, sports, general knowledge as well as some visual and audio trivia. Everyone agreed it was a fantastically fun afternoon with ‘The Duds’ taking out the 2018 trophy, no doubt helped by the two gentleman who made their way to Tatura by public transport from Altona and Bulleen to attend the afternoon. Both were sent back to Melbourne with some fond memories and great scones from Tatura. The final team scores for the competition were: The Duds 67pts; Chinwaggers 67pts; Charlots 67pts; Tat Tarts 58pts and MissFits 55 ½ pts. Well done and thanks to Bev, Mignon, Tom, Carol, Lena and Che for a wonderful event.

Practical Living Seminar- Sustainable Gardens: Transition Tatura and the community house will once again host a wonderful guest speaker on October 26 at 6:45. Roy Roberts has 27 years’ experience in the horticulture, garden and design industry, having designed over 500 projects from the very small to the very large. This should be a fantastic

informative night. Cost is $10 including supper, please book your spot.

FREE HELPING HAND FOR FARMERS

Hundreds of farmers across the GoulburnMurray Water area can benefit from a free and independent service to help them cope with the current and future, dry conditions. The Plan2Farm program helps farmers and their families make decisions about all aspects of their enterprise, including drought resilience and preparedness.

North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) Project Manager Shari Rankin said for a lot of farmers across the region, planning has never been more important.

“The great thing about Plan2Farm is that it brings independent experts and advisors to your kitchen table for free,” she said. “Water prices are high and fodder is hard to come by, and indications are it will remain that way for a while. Plan2Farm can provide you with advice now to help you and your family get through the current conditions and get ready for the next tough period as well. It considers all aspects of your farming business, so it’s flexible enough to cope with any factors, either in the short term or the long term.”

Ms Rankin said a key to the project was that it was focussed on the health of the whole farm business. “At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. We will meet with you, work out exactly what you need and get the experts to come to you as soon as possible,” she said. “We focus on making sure you get the advice you need to come up with a plan for your business, without delay and without being drowned in paperwork.”

And acting quickly can make a big difference, as Tyntynder farmers Kevin and Jeanette Burge know well. The dairy farmers have not only planned for their future but they have already begun acting on it. “Since we started Plan2Farm we have added Aussie Reds to our cattle mix, closely monitored cow condition at calving, increased our herd by 30 cows, purchased a block we were leasing and secured a lease on an additional block,” Kevin said. “We have also hooked up a computer monitor in the dairy, registered for Building Better Regions Succession Planning and spoken with the North Central CMA about revegetation.

We have learnt it is important to set goals and then tick them off. Even if you have had a bad day, tomorrow is a new day and you start again on your list. We’re very satisfied with what it has enabled us to do on our farm and in our business.”

Plan2Farm was highlighted as part additional support announced by the Victorian Government this week to ease the financial burden on farmers experiencing dry conditions. Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford outlined a further $5 million to ensure farmers and irrigation communities have the support they need. The funding package includes $1.4 million for Drought Infrastructure Grants, which includes grants to help farmers face the cost of establishing areas to contain stock.

$1.2 million will support a new Drought Employment Program to give drought-affected workers in the Wellington and East Gippsland shires the opportunity to earn an income off-farm by working with local Catchment Management Authorities. Workers will carry out a range of tasks, including building fences along rivers, stock control and weed management. One million dollars will go towards technical and business support for farmers to manage financial decisions on farm, including animal health, feed budgeting and land management.

The package also includes: $400,000 for the Look Over The Farm Gate Program to better support the mental health of farmers through community awareness workshops and events, $500,000 for a drought co-ordinator in Gippsland, and additional coordination effort in the northern irrigation areas and north-west Victoria, $500,000 for a Community Resilience Program, working with local councils to provide social events and community infrastructure and $400,000 to increase the Rural Financial Counselling Service.

OPERA FOR EVERYONE IN NOVEMBER Kindred Spirits, one of Tatura’s fundraising for community groups, is pleased to offer to locals and visitors their 2018 event, Opera in the Convent. The Kindred Spirits team continues to prepare for their forthcoming opera in the Convent event on Sunday, November 18.

Michael Lapina is also continuing to prepare his operatic program.

Michael will be bringing opera students as guests to perform with him as well as solos of their own. Soprano Eleanor Blythman will also be joining Michael on stage. Just as Kindred Spirits, Julie, Lucy and Sue work tirelessly behind the scenes in preparation for the big day, performing guests are rehearsing and fine-tuning their arias and popular opera numbers in readiness for an amazing afternoon of entertainment.

Be prepared to be dazzled by brilliant harmonies and stirring solo numbers as performing guests engage with audiences of all ages. It is promised that there will be something for everyone from Puccini to Andrew Lloyd Webber and more and Michael has even been known to encourage audience participation. Making opera accessible to all, he will perform the classics as well as more well-known popular opera numbers. It is certain that guests will recognize many of the numbers performed. While listening to your favourite operatic numbers and musical classics, you can enjoy a sumptuous afternoon tea, which is included in the ticket price.

Funds raised by Kindred Spirits will stay in the Tatura community to provide educational opportunities for local children encountering barriers that impede success. Whether these be financial, social, cultural or academic, Kindred Spirits hopes to make a difference to some local children through their fundraising efforts. Disbursement will be managed by professionals outside the Kindred Spirits team.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB Tatura Probus club held their meeting on September 27. President Ev Leahy opened the meeting and welcomed guests and members. Sixteen members enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Royal Mail in Mooroopna and in October we are looking forward to a trip to the silos on October 18. We will meet at V-line at 9am. Anna gave our birthday members a little gift.

Our guest speaker was Geoff Alexander who spoke of his young days as a baker. After his apprenticeship he had a break and took up driving trucks. Glenda and Geoff bought the Bakery twenty years ago and what a journey they have had entering and winning shows all over Australia They certainly put Tatura on the map with their beautiful Vanilla slices.

They now employ 23 staff and Geoff is very keen to keep up the good name of his business Glenda gave us a bit of history on the old wood oven that is still there. They both agreed it was a lot of hard work but they love it and plan to stay as long as they can. We all appreciate what they have done for the town and wish them well for the future.

GOWRIE PARK PRESCHOOL The students of Gowrie Park Pre School finished Term 3 with enthusiasm.

As the weather has improved, our curiosity has turned to spring time. We have planted seeds in eggshells, picked flowers and enjoyed discovering the wonders of bees.

We had a wonderful dress up day to celebrate Book Week. The centre was filled with fairies, racing car drivers, the Hulk, princesses and even Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The students enjoyed sharing their love of books with each other.

We spoiled our dads and special friends with a lovely picnic for Father’s Day, cooking our own cakes, sausage rolls and biscuits. Everyone had a great time, even though it was a bit chilly that day!

We had an ARRGH-mazing visit from Pirate Peg who told us hilarious stories of losing her treasure chest keys. Have you ever wondered what a pirate’s favourite subject is? ARRRGH-T! We love it too! Students have been busy making paper plate art, underwater sea worlds and dream catchers.

We are looking forward to a wonderful Term 4 with lots of school visits, continuing friendships and celebrations.

THE HUMBLE VIRUS A virus is a microscopic organism that can replicate only inside the cells of a host organism. Viruses are so tiny they are only observable through a microscope (which is why they’re called microscopic). Viruses infect all types of organisms including animals and plants as well as bacteria. Approximately 5000 different viruses have already been described in detail although scientists are aware that there are millions of distinct types. Viruses are found in virtually every ecosystem on Earth and these tiny life forms are thought to be the most abundant type of biological entity.

Viruses play a key role in the carbon cycle as their role in ocean biochemistry includes microbiological decomposition.

This decomposition results in massive carbon dioxide respiration of marine flora that effectively destroys approximately

three gigatons of carbon each year from the atmosphere.

Viruses have no ability to metabolize on their own but depend upon a host organism for replication. So, what is the difference between bacteria and a virus? Bacteria are regarded as being alive, which means that they have all the metrics that define life including cell structure. A virus, whilst obviously a life-form of sorts, is much harder to define. They are more akin to wandering bits of DNA wearing a suit of protein-based armor and looking to cause trouble.

Human diseases caused by viruses include chickenpox, HIV, influenza, Marburg, Ebola, Hanta, avian flu, cold sores, and the common cold. Some viruses can induce chronic infection which means that a virus continues

to replicate over the entire remaining life of the host, in spite of the host's defense mechanisms.

This syndrome is common in hepatitis B and C viral infections. Those with chronic infections are deemed to be carriers as they are reservoirs of the infectious virus as long as they live.

Viral transmission may be vertical, e.g. from mother to child or horizontal, e.g. from individual to individual, with horizontal being the most common method of viral propagation.

Horizontal infection can occur via exchange of blood, exchange of body fluid by sexual activity, oral exchange of saliva, from contaminated food or water, respiration of viruses contained in aerosols, or through animals or insects such as mosquitoes. Each virus has a preferred method of transmission. The speed of spread of viral disease correlates with a number of factors with human population density and sanitation being two of the most significant.

There aren’t very many good things about viruses as they usually attack your body and make you sick. However, not all viruses are bad. All animals, including us, host a great number of viruses in their intestinal tract that aid with digestion. One virus that made a huge difference to our health was the Cow Pox virus.

Cow Pox is a painful, and often disfiguring disease that commonly attacked milkmaids.

However, it is closely related to Small Pox and doctors eventually noticed that milkmaids with Cow Pox almost never contracted Small Pox. Investigation revealed that it was the antibodies against the painful but otherwise harmless Cow Pox that protected the milkmaids from Small Pox. It was because of the Cow Pox virus that scientists learnt to vaccinate us against many nasty diseases today. Viruses have very clever ways of attacking all types of cells, including bacteria. Scientists are trying to find ways of using these viruses to kill bacteria, instead of relying on antibiotics.

A LOVELY DAY OUT This month's fun run was again enjoyed by all Fins and Fenders Car Club members who participated. Meeting at the club rooms we headed off in convoy to Rochester, where we checked out the silo art before enjoying a drink together at the Rochester Hotel. From there we continued to Echuca, having a lovely meal at the Shamrock Hotel, where most of us sat outside in the sunshine. After our bellies were full we walked around the corner to the Holden Museum. I personally hadn't been there for some years and was most impressed with the current set up. One of the owners gave us a demonstration of air bags being deployed, though only at half the usual speed, a short talk and showed a fifteen minute video of Holden's history. We then all walked around at our leisure to view the many cars and accessories on display. Each of us had a favourite and there were certainly many to choose from. Some more outstanding than others. It was interesting to see the actual car used in Shane Jacobson and Paul Hogan's film - Charlie and Boots. A display showing half a car from the early years and the other half of a current model, separated only by a mirror, was most impressive as well. The current owners, who have been there for under two years are most enthusiastic, answered all questions and were more than happy to chat as long as everyone wanted. As the club had paid for members entrance fee, it turned out quite an inexpensive day. I headed home with a club member who was on his own, which gave me the new experience of traveling in his Chevrolet Bel Air that is a left hand drive.

The week prior many of us had attended the large Car meet at Nagambie, though this was not as an actual club. Another lovely day weather wise, with a huge variety of different vehicles on display. Now that cricket season is once again upon us, we have been asked to reprint the following explanation put forward by Lord Bane several years ago in an attempt to explain cricket to the many American tourists visiting England. I have also used this to explain it to my wife but for some unknown reason, she appears as confused as ever. Here then is Lord Banes excellent explanation about cricket which should clear things up immensely.

Cricket: You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

The Early Years - Religion The existing churches of Tatura all began at roughly the same time, usually as small congregations of the faithful meeting in the tiny kitchens or living rooms of the pioneers. Baptist services were being held at Tatura in 1889 when it was reported by the Goulburn Advertiser that, “Mr W. Baldwin officiated in the absence of Rev. Mr Sneyd.”

In January 1894, the Rev. S Chapman conducted opening services in connection with a Baptist church built at the rear of the residence of the minister, and facing Hogan Street. The Kyabram Free Press noted: “The new edifice is a neat construction of wood, with the latest improvements as to ventilation. The windows are all of beautiful cathedral glass.” By 1903 Baptist services were also being held at Ardmona and North Mooroopna.

The Rev. Ballantyne, who had been pastor for some time, left in 1905 and in 1907 the church was demoted to the status of home mission station. A valiant attempt at revival was made in April 1908, with a united mission conducted in conjunction with the Methodists, but in December the last service was held, the church was closed, Pastor Trinham was farewelled and Arthur Manning of Harston threw his lot in with the Presbyterians.

Press reports indicate that wandering preachers from outside the area did not receive a very warm welcome at Tatura. The Tatura Independent in 1884 commented, “The evangelist preacher, Booth, had a very poor audience in the Mechanic’s Hall on Sunday last. It consisted of an old lady, two girls and a boy.” In 1885, officers of the Salvation army conducted three services in the hall. The Tatura Herald reported, “There was a very fair attendance on each occasion, but the majority of the audience appeared to look on the service as a performance for their amusement rather than a religious service.” The Goulburn Advertiser was positively carping in its comments on a visit of the commanding officer of the Salvation Army, Captain Joe Perry in May, 1889: “Glad tidings for our wicked town. A contingent of the Salvation Army from

Shepparton intend to storm the district shortly. They propose to hold forth in the Mechanic’s Hall.” In June, 1889 the paper reported, “The Salvation Army opened fire on Tatura on Tuesday and Wednesday evening last. I don’t think Joe, with his hallelujah wife and the saved grocer, made much of an impression.”

Some mystery shrouds the origins of the Catholic Church at Tatura. It seems there was vacillation about the place to build. According to the Goulburn Advertiser in April 1876, “The Roman Catholics have at last decided to select a site for the erection of a chapel in the township.” It was then reported in November of the same year, “The Roman Catholics have finally decided to erect a chapel on Mr Lennon’s farm, which lies north of Tatura. The timber is on the ground, and the work of erection will soon be proceeded with.” It appears that the congregation, already in existence at this time, built the first church somewhat out of town, but this is not altogether clear for, according to the Goulburn Advertiser, two years later the Bishop of Sandhurst visited “Tatura at the new church.”

Did he visit the church referred to above, or another one? In 1880 it was recorded that “a bazaar will be held in Messrs Reilly and Sons new granary to clear the debt from the Roman Catholic Church.” However, in the same year the Tatura Herald reported: “A movement is on foot for the purpose of building a Roman Catholic Chapel in Tatura to cost about 600 pounds.” A meeting was held in 1885 to plan the St Mary’s Church, predecessor of the present Sacred Heart. Land was acquired from the government and sold again when a more agreeable site was obtained on the Hogan selection west of the Mechanic’s Institute. A foundation stone was laid on April 29, 1888 by the Rev. Dr Revile, Bishop of Sandhurst.

The Goulburn Advertiser noted: “The procession was a mile long, and as it passed along Goulburn Street had a very imposing appearance.”

The Stations of the Cross were blessed in November 1897 by the Very Rev. O’Farrell, head of the Redemptorists’ Order in Ballarat.

LAMB SHANKS

This is such a simple recipe and yet tastes quite special.

Ingredients: 4 Lamb Shanks 2 Carrots (peeled) 1 Zucchini 1 cup Green Beans 2 Veggie Stock Cubes 2 teaspoons Brown Sugar 2 tablespoons BBQ Sauce 1/2 teaspoon crushed Garlic 3 cups Hot Water Method: Slice all vegetables and place in large casserole with lamb shanks.

Mix stock cubes, sugar, sauce and garlic with water.

Pour over meat and vegetables.

Cook for 2 1/2 hours at 180 degrees.

Remove lid and cook for a further 30 minutes.

CWA RODNEY BRANCH We welcomed Joan Brown from the Marion Centre as the guest speaker at our September meeting. The GV West Group Exhibition was held in August at Victory Hall: Janette Mason, the coordinator of the exhibition, gave a report.

Janette thanked everyone for their help.

There were 109 entries from twelve Rodney members. Rodney Branch came second in five small items. Gwen Ranson won ‘One Women’s Work’. Janette, Shirley and Jan received best in several categories. Juniors had a high standard in their entries. There were 690 entries and the hall looked good with plenty to see on display. 196 people came through the doors.

At the Royal Melbourne Show in September, our members Janette Mason and Janice

Barrette volunteered every day, catering in the CWA Building. This year the ladies broke the CWA record for the number of thousands of scones baked and sold.

Rushworth CWA Branch celebrated their 90th birthday on Friday, October 5, and were joined by several of our members.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the Senior Citizens Hall, on Thursday, November 8 at 6.30 for 7.00 pm start. All members are asked to bring a small plate of supper. The competition is, ‘An article depicting poppies in remembrance of 100 years since end of WW1.’

We are holding another Street Sausage Sizzle on Friday November 10. Our Christmas breakup will be held on December 13.

At the Fine Food Trade Show

TATURA HOT BREAD WINS GOLD Tatura Hot Bread recently attended the Fine Food Trade Show in Melbourne, which included The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition. We entered eleven Pies and one Sausage Roll in the Competition and received four gold medals for our Chunky Steak, Chunky Steak and Caramelised Onion, Tuscan Chicken and Vegetarian Pies. We received six silver medals for our Sausage Roll, Chunky Pepper Pie, Brekkie Pie, Curried Chicken and Vegetable Pie and our Chicken, Cranberry and Brie Pie. We received two bronze medals for our Plain Pie and Curried Sausage Pie. This is one of the most successful results we have

achieved. We have tried a few new pies including the Tuscan Chicken, which is proving popular in the shop.

There were bakeries from all over Australia attending. It was great this year that our baking staff were able to come down to have a look at the competition and also the Trade Show. This gave them the opportunity to look at the judging of the pies and helped them see what the judges are looking for in a high-quality pie. They were ecstatic to find out all their hard work had paid off with four Gold Medal Pies.

November 1 – World Vegan Day. This is not a day to commemorate people from Venus although many vegans do sound as though they have come from a different planet. Vegans are vegetarians who do not consume dairy products or eggs as they do not like to see animals exploited. Most vegans will happily explain their way of life to anybody who is willing to listen or is trapped in a lift with them.

Fortunately, vegans have yet to start ringing doorbells in an attempt to convert the rest of us.

November 2 – International Men Make Dinner Day. Traditionally, it is the wife who makes dinner but now that both husbands and wives are working, it is time for the men to share the cooking responsibilities. After all, most of the greatest chefs are men. Please note: buying take away food doesn’t count, so come on guys, cooking one meal for the year won’t kill you, although it might kill everyone else.

November 3 – International Cliché Day. Clichés are annoying due to their predictability and lack of any true meaning. So, a word to the wise, they should usually be avoided like the plague, but on World Cliché Day, you are encouraged to bend over backwards, bite the bullet and blow your own horn with your bottomless pit of tired old clichés. After that, they’re old hat.

November 5 – Love Your Red Hair Day. Red hair is a symbol of a fiery temperament and a strong will and its natural beauty should be celebrated. Those of us with boring dark hair, usually tease these ginger nuts or ‘rangas’ simply because we’re jealous; as if.

November 9 – Chaos Never Dies Day. There are a number of days dedicated to stress relief, calmness and taking it easy. There is a premise that we’re too busy, our lives are too chaotic and we need to step away from it for a while. The thing is, we’re busy all the time and nothing is ever simple or quiet! It’s called life. November 12 – International Tongue Twisters Day. It’s either an elegant, triumphant dance or a fumbling, ungainly stumble through a linguistic waltz. Master any of the following

November 13 - World Kindness Day. It’s a little sad that we have to have a day to remember to be kind to each other. However, kindness is either in your nature or it’s not.

So, for those selfish, mean and narcissistic people who require this day in order to show a little kindness, turn off your phone and acknowledge the fact that other people also exist in this world and that a little kindness towards them won’t cost you a thing. You might even enjoy the experience.

November 14 – World Diabetes Day. This is all about raising the awareness of diabetes and related causes. November 14 is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, a medical scientist who discovered insulin. Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. There is no cure and it cannot be prevented. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition in which the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin. Type 2 is associated with modifiable lifestyle risk factors. It can be managed with regular physical exercise, healthy eating and weight reduction.

November 15 – Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. “Has another year gone by already?” I hear you asking yourself. If you are asking that question then it’s definitely time to pull on the rubber gloves, done the surgical mask and get cleaning. You may notice a sharp decrease in upset tummies once this is done.

November 16 – International Occult Day. Occult Day was established to encourage those who walk in the sun to take some time dancing in the shadows. Occult practices are not all dangerous paths, ghosts and demons. Instead they are a way to expand our consciousness and understand the part of ourselves that lives outside the physical world. Occult is based on the Latin ‘occultus’ and means ‘knowledge of the hidden’. the material.

November 20 – World Children’s Day – Despite the obvious fact that every day is children’s day, the United Nations uses this day to encourage children of all races, creeds

and religions to spend time together, getting to know each other and appreciating each other’s differences, and to prompt governments worldwide to pay more attention to the welfare of their youngest citizens.

November 22 – World Hello Day Participating in World Hello Day is quite simple: all you have to do is say hello to at least 10 people during the day. This is supposed to send a message of openness and goodwill to others, and apparently this small gesture alone will demonstrate how communication can be instrumental in resolving disputes and preventing conflicts. No doubt a think tank full of high fliers came up with this radical idea after spending many months jetting around the world and spending hundreds of thousands of tax-payer dollars.

November 24 – Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day. We all have talent. Sometimes it’s obvious to the world, such as playing the violin in an orchestra or smashing a tennis ball at Wimbledon, but in many cases, it is a special talent that you keep hidden from the world, such as whistling through your nose, reciting the alphabet backwards while belching or knitting a jumper with your toes. Today is your opportunity to share your unique talent with the world.

November 26 – International Cake Day. Cakes must have improved since the French peasants cut off Marie-Antoinette’s head for telling them to eat cake during a famine.

Perhaps they were overly conscious about their weight. Anyway, you can put your own diet on hold today and indulge yourself with your favourite cake. Perhaps our bakeries will offer all their cakes for half-price today (hint, hint).

November 29 – Square Dancing Day – Yeeha! Square Dancing has its roots in traditional English, Irish and Scottish folk dance and was first documented in 17thcentury England. This is a great way to get fit, meet new people and have lots of fun. Each dance has a ‘caller’ to help you with the steps but unfortunately, they tend to speak a different language to the rest of us.

November 30 – Computer Security Day. Cyber theft is a growing problem so please use this day to change your electronic devise passwords and ensure that they are strong and never open any attachments from an unknown source, no matter how alluring they are. * I may have confused readers last month when I left out the most important word in one of my quotes. It should have read: ‘Action without reflection leads to repetition.

Reflection without action is meaningless.’

Interviews with John INTERVIEWS WITH JOHN - ALAN MORSE

John: Should I call you Alan or Morsey?

Alan Morse: You can call me either but most people call me Morsey.

John: What’s your background? Are you a local?

Alan: My wife Kerry and I moved up to Tatura thirteen years ago from Mt Evelyn in Melbourne. Kerry is a primary school teacher and at that time all three of our children were in primary school. I currently work at Tatura Milk on the automation and control systems.

John: That sounds like an interesting job. When did you become involved with the Tatura Lawn Tennis Club?

Alan: Kerry and I both played tennis so we joined the Tatura Lawn Tennis Club. That same year I joined the committee and have been on it ever since. Two years later I was asked to become Tournament Director for our Labour Day tournament and this year will be the 12th year I have run the event. It’s a great social tournament with a spit roast and live music on the Sunday night.

John: I heard a rumour about an end of season fashion show. What is that about?

Alan: I decided to add a bit of glamor to the club by having an end of season Brownlow Medal. Everyone gets dressed up, although not to the same level as the AFL Brownlow, and there is a winner for each team as well as an overall winner. This year will be the 6th year I have run the event.

John: How did the Lights for the Kids Project begin?

Alan: The biggest problem I saw at the club was that during late autumn, winter and early spring there was virtually no tennis played. So, the committee let me loose to chase grants with the aim of replacing our two unplayable asphalt courts, upgrade the two concrete courts and get lights on all four courts. That was in July, 2009.

John: That’s quite an ambitious project. I know how hard it is to attract grants.

Alan: The process didn’t start very well as we failed with our first two attempts. With one of them we were informed by Council that the grant was a two for one grant but apparently this was an error and should have actually been a one for one grant. However, after that we got on a roll and didn’t miss.

John: I understand that you broke up the project into several stages.

Alan: Yes, three stages in fact. The first stage was completed with the help from a $15,000 grant from Council and a generous donation from the TAT200 committee. This was in 2012 and the asphalt courts were resurfaced with synthetic grass while the $10,000 donation from TAT200 enabled us to provide lights to these courts. The installation was half done when we had an enormous amount of rain. They had to come back a week later to complete. Some rain now would be nice! I should mention that the tennis club also provided $39,000 towards this project.

John: I’ve played on those courts and they’re very nice. What was the second stage?

Alan: In September 2017, we received a $43,620 grant from the State Government, Sport & Recreation Victoria and Tennis Australia and our

We delayed stage two while we waited for the price to come down on the high efficiency LED lights. These lights provide a fantastic white light with low running costs. We’re all very happy with them.

John: And the final stage?

Alan: The final stage was resurfacing the concrete courts with synthetic grass. It has been nine long years with many meetings and lots of problems with suppliers and other sporting bodies but in the end it has been worthwhile. The kids are now able to play all year round and receive coaching from our super coach, David Starling.

John: So, what was the final cost of the project?

Alan: The total project cost was $206,611 and grants accounted for $99,621 of this. The remaining $106,990 was raised by the Tatura Tennis Club which is an extraordinary amount of money from a small club like ours. We had a fantastic support crew of volunteers who worked tirelessly on raffles, comedy nights, social balls, Hi Tac, the bar, Labour Day and Veterans tournaments and I’d like to thank everyone for this tremendous effort.

John: It certainly sounds like there is a great spirit in the club.

Alan: There certainly is. I think I should also mention the local businesses who donated their services to the project. Peter Kennedy provided footings for the lights, Andrew Clement provided cages for the light footings and Brad from NL Drainage provided the drain on the southern courts.

John: I was pleased to see mayor Kim O’Keeffe at the official opening along with Suzanna Sheed.

Alan: I think they recognise what a tremendous effort this has been by everyone involved. The challenge going forward now is to maximise the use of the lights to create the opportunity for more people to play tennis which should hopefully lead to an increase our membership.

NOVEMBER STATE ELECTION Please find below, information sent in by two of the candidates for the November State Elections. Please note that the Tatura Bulletin, as a non-political publication, is not endorsing either candidate but we felt it was in the best interest of our community that you had the opportunity to get to know your candidates a little better.

CHERYL HAMMER, LIBERAL CANDIDATE I grew up in Shepparton after moving here from Tocumwal with my family when I was eight.

My father opened Shepparton's first hot bread shop, The Bread Bin, in High St, Shepparton and I started school at St Georges Rd Primary School. I am the oldest of four children and we all went to Shepparton High School.

After a short stint at Deakin University I started as a cadet journalist at the Shepparton News. My career saw me at the Herald and The Sun, when two separate papers, and then return to Shepparton to start my time in television, at GMV 6 which became VIC TV and then WIN TV. I was poached to Channel 7 in Melbourne to become a chiefof-staff in the newsroom where I worked for two years before heading to Queensland for a freelance career at the three commercial TV stations.

My partner, Rhys Sutherland, from Cosgrove (east of Shepparton) and I welcomed our first son while living in Brisbane nearly 22 years ago.

That is when we decided to return to the Shepparton area to be closer to our families and so Rhys could return to the family cropping farm.

It was at the Cosgrove property I started my lavender farm, Woodlands Estate Lavender, with, by that time, three boys all under four years old.

I was selected as one of ten faces of Victorian Women in Business to feature in a photographic exhibition at Federation Square to showcase rural entrepreneurship. These were very busy times in our household, but a wonderful lifestyle for a young family.

I believe my sense of community was born as a young journalist at the Shepparton News, telling people's stories and shaping the way they felt about this region - it was a privilege. But it was my time in Dookie, that I realised my talent for leading and creating collaboration with others in my village. I knew back then I would one day be advocating for what I believed we could achieve as a region.

So, eleven years ago as a mother of three boys, Rhys' partner in life and farm, working as a freelance journalist and building my business, I decided to buy The Churches on Poplar Ave in Orrvale where I opened a retail shop to sell my lavender products and tea house where I served more lavender scones than I care to remember.

While I finished up in the shop a few years ago, my business, The Churches Accommodation, is going strong, having won a Gold Award at the Victorian Tourism Awards in 2017 in the self-contained category.

Rhys and I represented Victoria in our category at the Australian Awards in February this year.

I have renovated the century old church and gardens to offer a private

As a small business owner/manager and employer, I understand the challenges of doing business in a regional centre and the constant ups and downs of working a farm. My media and marketing work led me to working with Mr Lloyd Mawson at Emerald Bank Leisure Land for four years when the Shepparton Motor Museum was being developed along with the local produce store and a monthly market. At the time I was also President of Tourism Greater Shepparton and a board member of Goulburn River Valley Tourism.

My work with local not-for-profit organisations, The Community Fund Goulburn Valley and the Fairley Foundation, followed and I have taken leave from the Fairley Foundation to campaign full time as the Liberal Candidate for the Seat of Shepparton.

My roles with these organisations have given me a true understanding of the day to day issues at grass roots level as well as being able to work at an executive level with many other organisations, including youth and social welfare groups, like Shepparton Foodshare.

I love where I live.

I will be at the Tatura Golf Club from 5.45 pm on Friday, October 26, following on from visits to Nathalia, Strathmerton and Numurkah, to make sure I hear firsthand what is on local residents' minds. These are the top issues from the community consultations I have already had cost of living pressures, crime and safety, need for improved health and education services, public transport and roads and protect access to water for our farmers.

SUZANNA SHEED, INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE If someone had told me four years ago I was about to be an elected member of the Victorian Parliament, I wouldn’t have believed them.

In October 2014 I was happily running my own law firm in Shepparton and enjoying my spare time with my husband, Dr Peter Eastaugh, our children and grandchildren, our friends, and of course our beautiful Golden Retrievers, Quincey and Rosie.

I did not have political aspirations, but as we got closer to the last state election and the needs of our electorate continued to be ignored, I knew something had to change.

We had needed investment in health, in education and in our rail service for so long, but no one was listening.

Fast forward to today and it’s remarkable what our community has been able to achieve. We have secured more than $600m for major projects such as Goulburn Valley Health, our schools and our train line.

Having worked and lived in Shepparton for more than 30 years, I had local knowledge about the region and the issues we were facing, but since being elected to Parliament I have learnt so much more about our strengths and diversity.

Spending time in Tatura, and other towns across the electorate, has reminded me daily of what a self-starting, passionate and vibrant community we live in and it is an honour to advocate for the attention we have long-deserved.

That’s not to say there haven’t been challenges – water policy for our region being one of the most important ones we have faced.

While it was also a challenge to enter Parliament as an Independent, with no party machine to show me the ropes and share the load, it has certainly had its benefits.

It has meant I have been able to run an agenda specifically for this

I firmly believe this is an exciting time to be living in the Shepparton District, and I look forward to seeing such positive change continue for years to come.

AARON RECEIVES FUNDING Aaron Niglia, an aspiring junior tennis player who is 13 years old and who also loves his soccer, recently received funding through the Athlete Pathway Travel Grants Program Category 2: Community Funding.

The support of the Shepparton Junior Tennis Association and Regional Junior Secretary Heather Lees, made it all possible for Aaron to receive a Travel Grant allowance of $750. Athlete Pathways is organised through the Department of Health and Human Services which allows juniors, who reside in regional areas and who play at a Community Level, an opportunity to help with travelling costs to urban destinations. This funding helps juniors like Aaron to travel to Melbourne to improve their skills and excel in their sport and who are often at a disadvantage compared to juniors who reside in major cities. Aaron has represented the Goulburn Valley in Senior and Junior Rep Teams, Inter-regionals and Junior Cup Squads as well as competing successfully in individual tournaments in both singles and doubles with local club member Charlie Murdoch. Aaron has been traveling to Hume Tennis and Community Centre since February 2018, twice a week for Squad Training, Men’s Winter Pennant and is playing in the highest junior grade offered in the Northern Suburbs Junior Tennis Association, playing in ‘A Special’ for Hume Tennis Club. This has been an amazing experience for Aaron as he has played against highly ranked Victorian and National junior players who he would never come across playing locally.

Aaron is greatly appreciative of the funding received as it will help contribute with travel costs to and from Melbourne and to Tennis Victoria Points Tournaments throughout the year. Aaron said that the travelling can be tiring but you learn to adjust. Aaron also plays locally for Dhurringile Tennis Club, although this is the first time the club has been unable to field a junior side since the club became incorporated back in the 1980’s.

Aaron is also coached by Qualified Tennis Vic Coach, Mark Mills.

10. Spiders: Not all spiders are poisonous but those that are can be very dangerous and many of them happen to live in Australia. Two of the deadliest spiders on Earth are the Black Widow Spider and the Funnel Web Spider.

9. Sharks: Sharks are a group of fish characterized by a cartilaginous skeleton and five to seven gill slits on the sides of the head. Sharks were around before the first dinosaurs and are an extremely efficient killing machine.

8. Hippopotamus: The hippo is the third largest land animal and although it looks slow, it can run at 30kph and its jaws can bite a crocodile in half if one of them is silly enough to attack. These creatures are responsible for over 500 deaths each year.

7. Elephants: Elephants are docile animals but can be very dangerous if provoked or if they are protecting their young. Over 1000 people are killed each year in India and Africa.

6. Crocodiles: The crocodile is a living dinosaur and has changed very little over the past million years. The salt-water crocodile is the largest living reptile on the planet and has no predator in the animal kingdom. It is estimated that crocodiles are responsible for over 3,000 deaths each year.

5. Deathstalker Scorpion: On average, these creatures are responsible for over 5,000 deaths each year.

4. Snakes: Not all snakes are dangerous but two of the most deadliest snakes are the Black Mamba (Africa) which has a top speed of 30kmh and enough venom in one bite to kill ten adults, and the Carpet Viper (Africa and Asia) which has a venom that destroys red blood cells and causes organ decomposition and is fatal unless treated extremely quickly.

3. Tsetse Fly: These flies are responsible for thousands of deaths every year. They are found in the middle of Africa and look like a common house fly. However, they suck your blood and often inject a parasite called Trypanosomes into your veins which, if left untreated, will eventually kill you.

2. Mosquitoes: Spanish for ‘small fly’, mosquitoes are known to cause diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, West Nile virus, dengue fever, filariasis and the Zika virus.

PHOBIAS (10-01)

I know many of you have wondered why people suffer from such a wide range of phobias and I can explain this by trotting out my famous (in my lunchtime anyway) tomato theory. Tomatoes are a very basic biological entity but for those of you who have grown them, there are far more mal-formed tomatoes on a bush than there are perfect ones.

The human brain is also biological and is a million times more complex than the simple tomato, therefore the capacity for things to go wrong is infinitely greater. The fact that people suffer from the odd phobia is small potatoes compared to what could really go wrong in their brain when you think about the number of mal-formed tomatoes. It’s certainly food for thought and if there’s one important thing that we’ve learnt from all of this, it is that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you.

So here we go. According to non-scientific research, these are the top ten phobias in the world, starting with number ten. The chances are that every second person reading this list will suffer from at least one of them.

10. Trypophobia (from the Greek ‘trypa’ meaning hole) – the pathological fear of objects with irregular patterns of holes such as beehives, ant hills and lotus seed heads.

Rather than a fear, the reaction to these types of objects seems to be based upon biological revulsion. The premise is that the reaction is based upon a brain response that associates these shapes with danger. The type of shapes that elicit a reaction include clustered holes in skin, meat, wood, soil, plants or wounds and upon seeing these shapes, some people said they felt their skin start to crawl and feel itchy, they shuddered and began to sweat and feel nauseous. The conclusion is that this phobia is an unconscious reflex action based on a

primitive portion of the brain that associates the image with something dangerous.

9. Aerophobia (from the Greek ‘aero’ meaning air or gas) – the fear of flying.

This may be an indirect combination of one or more disorders such as claustrophobia or acrophobia. This phobia receives more attention than most other phobias because air travel is often difficult for people to avoid if they need to travel for work or family reasons.

It is also quite common, affecting a significant minority of the population, perhaps as much as a quarter. Both Doris Day and Ronald Reagan shared this phobia.

8. Mysophobia (from the Greek ‘musos’ meaning unclean) - the fear of contamination and germs (also called germophobia or bacterophobia). The term was coined by Dr William Hammond in 1879 when describing cases of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) exhibited by patients who repeatedly washed their hands. I personally avoid people with the sniffles like the plague and I certainly wouldn’t call this behaviour irrational.

7. Claustrophobia (from the Latin ‘claustrum’ meaning shut in place) – the fear of small places like cupboards, elevators, cars, planes, trains or phone boxes. It is believed that approximately 7% of the world’s population suffer from this phobia. The basis behind this fear is that many sufferers believe they will run out of air and suffocate.

6. Astraphobia (from the Greek ‘astrape’ meaning lightning) – the abnormal fear of thunder and lightning. People with this phobia often feel anxious during thunderstorms even when they feel the threat to them is minimal.

Sufferers may seek extra protection by hiding under a bed or in a cupboard. This reminds me of the golfer who walked around with a one iron in his hand during a thunderstorm. When

warned of the dangers of such a reckless act he replied, “I’ve got nothing to worry about.

Even God can’t hit a one iron.”

5. Cynophobia (from the Greek ‘kyon’ meaning dog) – the fear of dogs regardless of size. Being afraid of a Rottweiler makes a lot of sense but being frightened of a Shih Tzu is irrational (unless of course you’re afraid of tripping over them). This phobia is especially debilitating due to the high prevalence of dogs and the general ignorance of dog owners to this phobia as they simply can’t understand it.

4. Agoraphobia (from the Greek ‘agora’ meaning large public square) – a fear of open places and is characterised by anxiety in situations where the sufferer perceives certain environments such as vast openness or crowdedness as dangerous or uncomfortable and which can result in a panic attack. In some severe cases, sufferers are unable to leave their home or safe haven.

3. Acrophobia (from the Greek ‘akron’ meaning summit or edge) – an extreme or irrational fear of heights, especially when one is not high up. It belongs to a category of phobias called space and motion discomfort.

Obviously, once you are high up, particularly on the side of a steep mountain, then this fear is no longer irrational.

2. Ophidiophobia (from the Greek ‘ophis’ meaning snake) – the extreme fear of snakes.

There’s nothing wrong with a having a healthy respect but this fear goes beyond feeling wary when walking in bushland. A friend of mine many years ago couldn’t even watch a picture of a snake on television and even became jumpy if she saw a rope lying on the ground.

Perhaps it was a jump rope.

1. Arachnophobia (from the Greek ‘arachne’ meaning spider) - the fear of spiders. If arachnophobics see a spider, they will usually not enter that area until they are absolutely certain the spider has gone. Even the sight of a web can trigger a panic attack. In some extreme cases even a picture or realistic drawing can trigger fear. Apparently, this affects four times as many women as men.

November GARDENING PLAN It is important, especially this month, to recognise the value of mulching and mulching materials. Using organic mulches can protect your soils from the harsh sun as well as adding structure to depleted soils, preserve moisture which reduces the need for irrigation and becomes an aid in weed prevention. Mulches increase microbial activity improving overall health of the soil and also improve crop production when used on vegetable gardens. Some suggestions for organic mulches would be Lucerne, pea-straw, straw, pine bark or sugarcane mulch.

Watch out for aphids this time of year especially on new growth and buds on roses, gardenia, citrus and vegetables. You can squash the aphids if only a few but in more severe cases, spray to control with an insecticide.

Powdery Mildew can also be present with warmer weather and rain falls.

Treat this disease with a suitable fungicide. Replace all your tired spring flowering annuals with some fresh summer colour, Petunia's, Portulaca's, Marigold's, Cosmos, Salvia's are some suggestions that survive the summer heat. Always use a good quality potting mix to maximise their performance.

Hint: Mulching the surface of the soil in your pots well help retain moisture through-out the hotter months.

Spring flowering shrubs and rambling climbers can be pruned back this month as their flowers finish. Banksia Roses and Wisteria can be cut back heavily if needed. Otherwise a light trim for Azalea's and Lilac's to maintain a good shape. Hedge plants such as Buxus and Murraya can also be trimmed this month.

Hint: Mix dampened peatmoss and compost to make an ideal mulch for your Azaleas and Camelias through summer.

Green Aphid It's a great time to plant herbs now. Growing strongly scented herbs among other plants can help deter pesky insects, especially in your vegie patch. Try planting Rosemary, Thyme, Parsley, Oregano, Perrenial and SweetBasil. Coriander is another great herb but doesn’t like the super hot days, so a cooler spot in your garden will give it a longer life and stop it from producing seed too quickly.

As you would have noticed this is the time for roses to be in full bloom.

Feeding them a complete rose food is important to keep up the nutrient requirement. An occasional deep watering through the hotter months will also benefit your roses as does de-heading spent flowers to promote more flowering for a longer period of time.

Hint: The product Seasol promotes vigorous flowering, fruiting and overall plant health. Seasol stimulates new root growth, helps the plants to build up resistance to disease, insect and fungal attack. Seasol provides its benefits both through the plant’s foliage as well as the soil. Seasol is a tonic and not a fertiliser, which means it contains virtually no nitrogen or phosphorus so it can be used on natives as well as acid loving plants, roses and citrus.

This is the time to carefully dig up your Daffodil and Tulip bulbs for dry storing until next Autumn.

If you have a vegie patch, one way to lower the incidence of diseases and capitalise on nutrient levels is to use crop rotation. Calibrachoa and its close relative petunia are happy-go-lucky plants that flower year-round in warm climates and they look great planted out in a pot or basket.

30 Years Ago…

Rodney Shire ratepayers face an increase in rates of eleven percent following the recent estimates meeting. Shire President, Cr Kevin Ryan, said it was the most difficult estimates meeting for many years and the increase was more than councillors wanted. “The amount provided is nowhere near sufficient to fully attend to the road problems the council has,” he said. Cr Ryan said if the increase had been any smaller there would have been fewer services in several areas. ***** Motorists shocked by the crumbling, cracked and pot-holed roads in the Shire of Rodney should get their suspension tuned because things will only get worse. Until recently the shire has spent $13,900 a week trying to keep the roads usable, but the money is running out and the shire will have to reduce spending to just $1,400 a week. The poor condition of the shire’s roads has come about because of steadily shrinking road funding allocations from the Road Traffic Authority combined with unusually heavy rainfall during the past winter, the fourth highest winter rainfall recorded here. ***** Tatura businessman Joe Vraca will throw his enthusiasm behind the Tatura Football Club in a bid to bring on-field success to the successstarved club. Vraca, who recently lost his position on the GV Racing Club committee in a big shock, was last week elected as the man to succeed Mr Angie Serra as president of the Bulldogs. Serra, who stepped down after three years at the helm, was awarded a life membership of the club at the club’s presentation evening. Commenting on his life membership, Serra said, “It’s been a hard time, we’ve had a few problems in the past three years but I’m proud to be president and to be involved with the club for 26 years.” **** Kings family tuckerbag turned five recently. Customers and staff celebrated the occasion with a traditional cake and candles. One of Tuckerbag’s many valued customers, Mrs Mary Serra, was given the honour of cutting the cake. ***** Tatura baby, Matthew Bunn, has raised the highest amount of money in Victoria in his section of the Mrs Australia (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) Quest. Matthew, with the help of his parents, Doug and Tina Bunn, and the local community, raised $3,307 for local entrant Mrs Bernadette Ward. ***** Frank Howley travelled to Melbourne recently to receive his Order of Australia Medal at Government House. He was accompanied by his wife Rose, son John and daughters Carmel and Maureen. His name was announced in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his service to youth.

The medal was presented to Mr Howley by His Excellency the Governor, Dr David McCaughey. *****

The Goulburn Valley Tree Group has commenced its major tree planting project at the Tatura Sewerage Farm. The planting is to be a four to fiveyear program with a total of 90 acres in all to be covered. Two acres of native trees, mainly gums, have already been planted and all trees are protected by plastic. The trees were grown and nurtured by the volunteers who readily gave up their time throughout the year. ***** Annette Meda and Matt Napolitana, both of Tatura, were wed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tatura. Annette’s gown was made of softest satin with sweetheart neckline and bows on the shoulders with sequined and pearl embroidered bodice and train. A full-length veil with scattered pearls was held in place by a beautiful sequin and pearl drop headpiece.

After a honeymoon in Narooma, the couple will settle in Tatura. ***** A dinner and auction held by the Gowrie Park Pre-School’s Committee of Management raised over $2,700. The dinner and auction was held to raise funds to build a verandah at the pre-school. One hundred and fifty guests attended the evening and generously bid upon the auction items.

Members of the committee said they were overwhelmed with the support of the evening. The night was moved along smoothly by the masters of ceremonies Phil Darby and Martin Ward. ***** Tatura Football Club has appointed premiership-winning reserves coach, Peter Warburton, as coach of the club’s thirds for next season. Warburton has vast experience as a coach having previously coached Tongala in the GVL and Merrigum in the KDL. He will replace Russ Telford who is leaving the area. ***** Fruit tree losses in the Goulburn and Murray Valleys will cost millions of dollars. Senior horticulturist at the Tatura Institute of Irrigation and Salinity Research, Dr Peter Jerry, said the trees were dying because of a massive winter outbreak of fungus and high water tables in the area. Last week Tatura orchardist, Mr Tony Minutoli, was cutting off hundreds of his trees with a chainsaw. “It breaks my heart to look at them,” he said.

“Last year we lost our whole crop, worth about $100,000 because of hail, and now this.” Mr Minutoli’s losses include 650 nectarine and apricot trees, many approaching peak production. Merrigum orchardist, Mr Joe Barbagallo, said the outbreak had put him back ten years and it would cost thousands of dollars to replace more than 850 peach and apple trees. ***** The Tatura Irrigation and Local History Museum was officially opened

by Rodney Shire councillor, Andrew Crawford. The building in Hogan Street was the original office of the Rodney Irrigation Trust. The museum contains a record of irrigation and information about pioneer families and the German War Cemetery. Rodney Shire Council provided money towards buying the building and a bicentennial grant was obtained. Service Clubs and local trades people have also helped establish the museum.

I put down my cup of tea and look Agnes squarely in the face. “Listen to this carefully Agnes because you’re going to find this very hard to believe. Last Sunday morning I was happily strolling around still in my dressing gown minding my own business when I was startled by a very loud knock at the door. Who could it be being so rude at nine-thirty on a Sunday? Were they religious people trying to convert me? Someone wanting me to change my telephone provider? Well, we both know who has the manners of a street urchin, don’t we Agnes. Yes, it was Garry, Agnes.”

“Well that is quite different, but you do know what I mean. Anyway, there he is out in the backyard, humming away and sounding so horribly happy so I went out and asked if he wanted a cup of coffee, just to be polite.

Of course, I meant I would take one out to him in the yard, but he just said that he thought I would never ask then wanted to know where the bathroom was so he could wash up before he came into the kitchen. He even asked if there was any morning tea on offer as he gets quite hungry at this time of day.”

“My goodness!” exclaimed Agnes. “What did he want?”

“I tried not to panic as I rushed into the house to put out the last of the lemon cake I had in the pantry and a couple of chocolate biscuits. I tell you Agnes, I can’t believe how up front this man is. However, in he marched, sat himself down and hoed into just about everything I put out without saying a word, which in itself was nothing short of a miracle. I watched in amazement as he scoffed down biscuit after cake after biscuit before finally going back outside without any fuss. I was cleaning up when he waved at me through the kitchen window. Oh, this man is so intrusive I thought. He yelled out that he’d fixed both of the leaking taps and had started on the other two way up the back. Then he told me that would need to come back later because if didn’t get going he’d be late for Monica and that she gets quite cranky if he’s late and he didn’t want to get into trouble.” I looked at Agnes. “What a terrible woman that Monica must be. Fancy getting cranky all the time, she needs to lighten up.”

“Let me tell you Agnes. I opened the door and stared at him in annoyance but before I could say anything he was off talking a thousand words to the minute with that big mouth of his and do you know what he said?”

“No,” replied Agnes. “I have no idea.”

“He said that he knew he’d been neglecting to do the couple of little jobs that he promised to do for me but as he had a couple of free hours before he went off to the pictures with Monica and he thought he would come around and get some of them done for me. He then had the nerve to say that hoped that would be okay.”

“What did you do Merle?” asked Agnes.

“Well, when he finally drew breath I told him that I supposed it was okay but that it was still very early in the morning and I wasn’t even dressed yet. I know he thought he was doing me a favour but I told him that surely he could have phoned or made a time in advance. I mean, there I was standing there in my pyjamas with a gentleman caller at the door. What would the neighbours think? I tell you Agnes, I could feel my face going all red with sheer embarrassment, caught out like that.”

“How awful,” agreed Agnes.

“Oh, it gets worse Agnes, let me tell you. He then had the audacity to say that I always look good to him and that I’m a lovely looking woman. He said he could barely tell that I had my pyjamas on and then mentioned something about me flashing my lovely eyes.”

Agnes sat with one eyebrow raised way above the other and said, “Oh my, Merle. What did you say?”

“What could I say? About all I could muster up Agnes was to tell him to go out to the backyard and start on the taps. He was so rude, so jolly happy and complimentary, and talkative, all at the same time.”

“Well then what happened Merle?” asked Agnes breathlessly.

“He smiled happily at me and went out into the back yard and of course I rushed into the bathroom to get dressed, with the door locked of course, then fixed my hair and so forth. I mean who wants to be seen like that, how horrible?”

“Yes, I know,” replied Agnes. “I never like Fred seeing me before I’m tidied up in the morning either Merle.”

Agnes gave me a strange look but didn’t say anything “Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked her.

“It’s nothing Merle. I was just thinking of something else, please go on with your story.”

I gave Agnes a stern look before continuing. “I told him yes, you can come back but do let me know in advance next time so I can stock up on cakes but don’t make it a Sunday as I do like a quiet Sunday morning, thank you.”

“He told me that would be fine and that he would give me a tingle and make a time. A tingle, Agnes, he was going to give me a tingle. And then he said that he would bring the cake next time as mine tasted a little stale. Can you believe the nerve of that man? And then he was gone.

The ignorant, rude, intrusive man was gone. What am I to do Agnes?”

Agnes shrugged. “Oh, just let him fix up your little jobs and pay him for it and then it will all be over for you although it does sound like he was helping you out, don’t you think?”

I shook my head. “You could look at it like that, but I don’t know how Monica McMurtle puts up with him. Good luck to her, I say.”

I mean, why someone would just turn up on a Sunday morning without any warning to help you out around the house? Who does that and why do they do it? Can someone please explain this to me? Anyone?

US STUDY TOUR GIVES NEW WATER EXPERIENCE Water management, agriculture, and communicating during flood, fire and drought, it was a packed itinerary for Laurie Gleeson Development Award winner Rosalind Martin during her study trip to California. Rosalind is a Water Resource Officer at Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) and was the 2017 recipient of the highly-regarded award, which offers $5000 to a water industry professional to undertake a professional development project.

The award is given by the Institute of Water Administration and is sponsored by Stantec and Russell Kennedy Lawyers.

Rosalind used the money for a two-week study tour to the US in March, predominantly spending time in California. The itinerary included the California Department of Water Resources, the National Weather Service, Oroville Dam Operations, Yuba County Water Agency, U.S Army Corps of Engineers and the California-Nevada River Forecast Centre.

A highlight was the Water Education Foundation Central Valley Tour, with 23 speakers and 18 locations over three days. The tour took in the middle section of California, between Sacramento and the Los Angeles Basin, a productive and well-irrigated region that was once arid and dry.

“The three-day tour down the Central Valley was really interesting in terms of seeing an area that’s similar to the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District,” Rosalind said. “The situation in California is quite similar to Victoria. Agriculture is a large industry in that area and they have extreme weather events such as droughts, fire and flood, just like we do. It was really valuable to learn about what they do and how they manage water.”

Rosalind also visited the United States Geological Survey Earthquake Centre, where scientists study the landscape of the country, its natural resources, and the natural hazards that threaten it.

Now it’s about sharing what she has learned.

Rosalind has been giving presentations within GMW and has some external presentations coming up as well. “Some of the information I learned would be really good to apply in the Victorian water industry, if we’re able to.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get the learnings out into the industry,” she said. Organising the study tour was a big job, and Rosalind said it was a great opportunity for professional development.

Rosalind said, “I got a lot of out of it professionally, so think about what you’d like to get out of it for yourself. That side of the award was bigger than I initially thought it would be. Organising my trip involved a lot of cold calling and cold emailing, and walking into massive government organisations and asking for someone’s time. It was really good.”

Rosalind is thankful to the government agencies, experts and scientists that took the time to meet with her and share their knowledge, and said the information she was able to bring home was invaluable. “If

someone asks for your help, think about what you can do for them. Without people saying ‘yes’ when I asked, I wouldn’t have learned nearly as much as I did,” she said. “I met with some pretty high-level people who gave me their time, and for anyone looking to do something similar, don’t be intimidated to ask people like that as you might be surprised who says yes.”

About Laurie Gleeson Laurie Gleeson was Managing Director of Goulburn Valley Water for 28 years from 1980 to 2008. A keen advocate for reform, efficiency and high standards of customer service, Laurie played an active role in enhancing the performance of the water sector. Laurie was a strong supporter of the IWA and the role it plays in contributing to professional development and collaboration in the Victorian Water Industry. He was a Past President and Member of the Executive Council of the Institute. In honour of Laurie Gleeson the IWA offers a $5000 grant each year for the winner to undertake a project of their choice.

I’m sure most of you could read this although it’s not that easy without any punctuation such as full stops, commas, question marks and quotation marks. Apparently in the early days of writing there was no punctuation at all including spaces between words. In those days you didn’t have to start your sentence with a capital letter because all the letters were capitals.

When punctuation began, it was mainly to help people read out loud. Until a few hundred years ago, not many people were taught how to read, so there was a lot more reading out loud by the few who could.

To help these readers to read out loud in the ancient world, signs known as ‘points’ were added to pages of writing. This is where the word ‘punctuation’ comes from – the Latin word punctus, meaning ‘point’.

These points told readers where to pause, when to take a breath, and what to emphasise. They were similar to notation marks in music that tell the musician when to play loudly, softly, quickly or slowly. In Europe from the early centuries after the death of Christ, these types of points were used quite widely although not everyone used the same points for the same thing.

By the reign of king Charlemagne of France in the late 8th century, there was at least some agreement in Europe about a few of the signs, as well as things like capital and lower-case letters, paragraphs and spaces between words. Then, when the printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenburg in the 15th century, printers wanted firmer guidelines so that there would be some conformity with their printing. Now that more and more books were being printed and becoming available to the general public, people started to think that punctuation could also help them make sense of what they were reading silently as well as out loud.

The history of some these punctuation marks is interesting. The comma, colon and period or full stop were first used by a Greek librarian called Aristophanes who lived in Byzantium in the second century BC. The comma was used to denote a short pause and is a Greek word meaning ‘cutting off’. The colon meant a medium-sized pause and the period meant a long pause when reading out loud.

In the Middle ages in Europe, a squiggle above a full stop was used to show that the sentence was a question and the person speaking should make their voices go up at the end. Some languages have the question mark at the start of the sentence to give the reader fore-warning that the sentence is a question. By the 17th century, it had turned into the question mark that we recognise today. The curly shape may have come from drawing the letter Q, short for the Latin Quaestio, meaning ‘question’.

In the early days of punctuation, if you were reading out loud and you saw this sign (!) you were supposed to make your voice sound amazed or surprised. There is a school of thought that the sign began as a squashed-up version of the ancient Greek word Io meaning ‘My Goodness!’ with the ‘I’ on top and the ‘o’ underneath. It was widely in use by the 17th century and at that time was sometimes known as a mark of admiration. Perhaps I should use one after my name although that may be a little pretentious and could have the adverse effect than the one intended by leading to ridicule.

Quotation marks only began to be used widely during the 18th century.

Before that, readers were supposed to understand from the way a sentence was written that someone was speaking, although sometimes the spoken words were underlined.

We use the apostrophe for two things, to show where a letter or letters are missing or to show who owns something. The word ‘apostrophe’ is Greek and in ancient Greek drama, an apostrophe was when an actor turned away from the audience to address someone who wasn’t there. The word eventually came to be associated with the idea of standing in for something that was missing. In our modern world of text messages and hazy grammar knowledge, the apostrophe is probably the most misused and abused of all our punctuation and there is now a movement by the grammatically challenged to do away with the apostrophe completely.

TATURA TABLE TENNIS CLUB The Tatura Table Tennis Club recently finished off a great season with their presentation night.

After a very even season, for which the grading committee is to be commended, the Toshiba team of Jeff Trevaskis, Tom Dooley Heath, Bill Heath and Maya Dooley Heath finished up as minor premiers but were unfortunately beaten in the semi-finals. A Grade Premiers were Motorola – Roc Niglia, Mark Shaw, Ian Pirie and Dimitri Gudyrev. Dimitri also received a trophy for being the best Russian player. Runners-up were Nokia – Aaron Niglia, Lisa Niglia, Kelvin Smith and Deb Johnson.

The A Reserve Premiers were Samsung – Lee Fitzgerald, John Basile, Robbie Fitzgerald and Alisha Fitzgerald and the Runners-up were Sony – John Kriesfeld, Trevor Bassett, Sharron Kriesfeld and James Downie.

All players in the club are graded according to their ability. The top 11 players are graded as a No. 1 player, the next 11 as a No. 2 player, the next 11 as a No. 3 player and the next 11 as a No. 4 player. At the end of the season, the players that ended up on top of the individual ladder for their grading were:

Roc, Mark, Dimitri and Ian, A Grade Premiers

No. 1 Best Player – Jeff Trevaskis.

No. 2 Best Player – Mark Shaw.

No. 3 Best Player – Bill Heath.

No. 4 Pest Player – Steph McNair.

The only match that Jeff Trevaskis lost for the year was against Lee Fitzgerald in the Club Championships and that was 9-11 in the fifth set.

The Brian Towner Memorial Doubles Champions were Kelvin Smith and Deb Johnson.

The Ted Price Memorial Doubles Champions were Rov Niglia and Mark Shaw.

Roc Niglia was also crowned Club Champion which capped off an amazing season.

The Encouragement Award which is awarded to a youth who shows promise and interest in the sport was a two-way tie between Maya Dooley Heath and Ben Hogg, while the Most Improved Award went to Joth Mallon. The Handicap Event winner was Reece Butler.

If you are interested in joining the Tatura Table Tennis Club, which is a great family club and actually has more active members than the Shepparton club, then keep an eye out for notices in the Bulletin in March / April next year. The club caters for all abilities, from absolute beginners to super stars and everyone in between.
