TATURA FIRE BRIGADE JUNIORS DO IT AGAIN! In a compelling end to the summer season of Junior Firefighting ‘demos’ across the State, Tatura‘s junior firefighters have again achieved an astonishing result by taking out the overall State title for the third year in a row. The Junior Fire Brigade State Championships, held on home soil over the last weekend in February, were an action packed two days of competition, entertainment and friendship. There were nearly 80 teams from about 50 towns from across Victoria and two interstate teams made the trek from Western Australia to be a part of this awaited event. Tatura’s own U14 team dominated strongly with a victory over rivals and second place getter Koo Wee Rup and third place Melton. This U14 team also achieved a new championship record for one event, a fantastic high for the home team. Our U17s tally pushed the results to comfortably secure the overall championship trophy for the weekend. Through a tenacious battle across the weekend, the Tatura U17 team placed second behind a determined team from Sale. Each thrilling event captivated a crowd of around 1500 that also had the chance to look at displays from the CFA, Tatura SES, Shepparton Search and Rescue, Victoria Police, St John Ambulance and Shepparton Army Cadets, making this a truly family event. The Tatura Fire Brigade would like to acknowledge the generous support of Tatura Milk Industries and Unilever as well as the fantastic community help over the weekend. Tatura Fire Brigade 2nd Lieutenant Alan Tyson said the brigade was very grateful for the support shown by the local businesses and the community for the event. “The future of fire fighting in Tatura is in the hands of these juniors and it is great to know that they are skilled so they can better help with community safety when they become operational.” Mr Tyson said special mention needs to be made of the coaches Martin Rennie, Darren Rennie and Damien Briese. Next year’s championships will be held in Swan Hill and Tatura is hoping to remain competitive in the years to come. Mr Tyson said, “Who knows what next year’s championships will bring? In its 43 year history, no team has ever won four in a row.” - Melva Tyson
