Book Reviews With Kerry…

Trust

By Chris Hammer Martin Scarsden’s new life seems perfect, right up until the moment it is shattered by a voicemail; a single scream abruptly cut off, from his partner Mandalay Blonde. Racing home he finds an unconscious man sprawled on the floor, and Mandy gone. For the first time Mandy finds denial impossible, now the body of a mystery man has been discovered, a man whose name she doesn’t know, a man she was engaged to marry when he died. It’s time to face her demons once and for all. So starts a twisting tale of intrigue and danger, as Martin probes the past of the woman he loves, a woman who has buried her former life so deep she has never mentioned it. This is the third book of Chris Hammer’s that I have read. Fast paced, enjoyable, utterly engaging and very easy to read. Kerry Gardner

TATURA MUSEUM Recent Visitors On the 30th April the Tatura Museum was visited by Dave Butler and Sue Muffler. Sue is the daughter of Karl Muffler a prolific artist who was interned at Tatura Camp 1 in 1939. Karl’s sketch of the Camp 1 gateway features on the cover of the recently published, Heritage award winning book ‘The Nazi Camp’. Karl Muffler was a pastry cook in Melbourne, having emigrated from Germany 12 years before the war, and when first interned was in a wood cutting team. He didn’t really like the physical labour and cited his preference for culinary delights. The museum has several photos of Karl’s spreads complete with white table-cloths and serviettes. Another group of recent visitors was the Hoefer family who were travelling with a caravan club. In this group, were Ulrich Hoefer who was interned at three years of age with his family from Palestine to Tatura Camp 3. Also there was Inge Hoefer who was born just after her parents were released from internment. Also visiting on 1st May, was Bronwyn Carmody whose brother Barry Carmody was given a hand-made toy machine gun. At 4 years of age, he was travelling with his father Bill Carmody who was delivering milk to Camp 1, and was given the present by a member of the Garrison. The toy gun (pictured) is rather crudely made but obviously a much-treasured possession with interesting carvings on the stock. Heritage Awards 1st May 2021 The Community Heritage Awards program culminated in the award ceremony at the GV Hotel Classics Room on Saturday 1st May. The Awards have 9 categories with Tatura Museum’s Alcove Collages and Camps Mural being entered in category 7 ‘Interpretive Signage’. Tatura Museum was awarded equal winner along with the Mooroopna Cenotaph re-development signage. All entrants are inspected by a panel of 8 heritage advisor personal who independently give a score of 1 – 10 to select a winner. The other section entered was category 4, ‘Best Research’, in which Arthur and Lurline Knee’s recent publication ‘The Nazi Camp” won the award.

Hoefer Templer Other locals to receive awards were the Sacred Heart Convent co-ordinated by Alex Ranson. The Sacred Heart Convent won in the ‘Reuse of a Heritage Place’ section also nominating in the ‘Restoration of a Heritage Place’ and ‘Maintenance of a heritage Place’. Congratulations are in order for the Murchison and District Historical Society who featured in the ‘Community, Multicultural and Indigenous Events and Tourism’ section, with their ‘Rock on Murchison 50 years Celebration’, equal winner with the ‘Shepparton Albanian Festival’. The Murchison and District Historical Society website also won the ‘Other Contribution’ section. Dunera Association Celebrating at the Tatura Museum on 18th April were the Friends of The Dunera Association who, with the friends of the Tatura Museum, celebrated the launch of the Alcove Collages and Camps Mural. Also performed was the opening of the Paul Mezulianik art exhibition titled ‘Become What You Are’. Over 80 people enjoyed the day with benefactors Neil and Mavis Grummitt unveiling the official plaque, guest speaker Anna Holloway, Seumas Spark opening of the Art Exhibition of Paul Mezulianik and concluding with afternoon tea. TATURA RSL: ANZAC DAY 2021 Tatura RSL was very pleased to offer a full program on Anzac Day the 25th. April 2021 with QR codes, sign in sheets and sanitisers all provided. A dawn service was followed by a warming gunfire breakfast. Later, a gathering at Victory Hall proceeded to Private Robert Mactier V.C. Memorial Garden, for the Main Service at 11 am. The RSL Membership thank all those who took part in the proceedings on the day. The Lions Club, local Victoria Police members, Pipes and Drums Band, CFA, SES, Guides, Tatura Primary and Sacred Heart Schools all took part, and all who wished to join in were welcome. The main service was addressed by M.C. and veteran Robert Mathieson, Tatura RSL President and veteran Robin Fairchild, and main speaker and veteran Rod Schubert, along with Veronica Dowel and Peter Reed. The Tatura RSL on behalf of the township, wish to thank the ground staff employed by Shepparton City Council, for their meticulous efforts in making Private Robert Mactier V.C. Memorial Garden, look a real picture on the day. It may be of interest to people, that all medals worn on the left side of the wearer are those earned by that wearer; whereas all medals worn on the right side of the wearer are those earned by relatives. Our Tatura Anzac Day Service was attended this year by a Tatura RSL member and proud relative of Private Robert Mactier V.C, who wore on the right side a replica of that V.C. There is more to be done. RSL member Vince Vincitorio. Have some news to share? Send it to info@tatbulletin.com.au

TATURA STRUCTURE PLAN RELEASED FOR DRAFT CONSULTATION Greater Shepparton City Council authorised the release of the draft Tatura Structure Plan for community consultation at the April Ordinary Council Meeting. The structure plan will guide the future development of land to the north, north-east and east of the township, and support the future development and growth for the township in the coming decades. The draft structure plan envisages Tatura as a standout regional community that continues to embrace its rich country town character, while progressively providing more housing that is affordable, diverse and sustainable. New residential development will progressively occur over the next 30 years and meet the anticipated growth of the town to 6,500 residents. Council has prepared a draft Traffic Impact Assessment and a draft Integrated Water Management Plan to determine the level of road and stormwater drainage infrastructure that will be required to support any future residential development. A draft Ecological Assessment has also been prepared to understand native flora and fauna present within the structure plan area. The draft Tatura Structure Plan layout has been shaped from the recommendations of the three background reports along with feedback from submissions by landowners, occupiers of land, community members and referral authorities. These submissions were received from pre-draft consultation which took place from July to August 2020. The draft structure plan layout identifies the anticipated densities for residential development within three precincts and has provided locations for new and upgraded intersections, open space and retarding basins for stormwater drainage. Walking and cycle paths will interconnect the precincts and link back to the township to ensure a coherent and connected community. The draft structure plan layout will also seek to ensure the protection of native flora and fauna, with significant patches of grassy woodland set aside as native vegetation reserves.

TATURA SELF STORAGE

“The draft Tatura Structure Plan is an important document for Council in helping to guide the future development of Tatura and surrounding areas,” Director Sustainable Development Geraldine Christou said. “Tatura’s population is anticipated to grow significantly over the coming years and the plan is an essential step in ensuring the town is adequately prepared to support the growth across all areas of the community.” The draft Tatura Structure Plan will undergo five weeks of community consultation between Monday 3 May 2021 and Monday 7 June 2021. The three draft background reports and the draft structure plan layout will be made available for the community to view. Council encourages landowners and residents in Tatura to make a submission. Feedback can be returned to Council via email to council@shepparton. vic.gov.au or mailed to Greater Shepparton City Council, Locked Bag 1000, Shepparton VIC 3632. For more information on the Tatura Structure Plan visit https:// greatershepparton.com.au/bpi/planning/strategic-planning/currentstrategic-projects/tatura-structure-plan, or contact Council’s Building, Planning and Compliance Department on 03 5832 9730.

RACHEL DOLLER NEW EXHIBITION Following on from her successful solo exhibition in Dookie in March, Tatura artist Rachel Doller has created a new body of work titled DRY PADDOCKS & SUNSETS. The works on paper and canvas are to be exhibited at McKellars Picture Framing and Wall Art in Corio Street, Shepparton during the month of June. In addition to the exhibition Rachel has also painted a mural based on the same theme at the Rushworth Art Depot. Rachel is having a very busy few months with the Shepparton Festival just around the corner – keep an eye out for some new mural work by Rachel that will be popping up around Shepparton, if you would like to know more about this year’s events head to the Shepparton Festival website www.sheppartonfestival.org.au Struck by the immense beauty and simplicity found in our regional landscapes, Rachel Doller embraces the drama of those dry, endless paddocks and the kaleidoscope of colour dancing across the sky at sunset. The works are warm and encapsulate the glorious light signalling the end of another day. True to her bold visual language, these works are engaging and dynamic with a strong emphasis on shape, colour and texture whilst conveying the nostalgia and joy she associates with dry paddocks and sunsets. Local Profile:

Bernie Maher

If ever there was a local Tatura identity, it would have to be someone like Bernie Maher. Born in 1935 at the Tatura Hospital, Bernie spent his first 4 years living in the white weatherboard house still standing at the front of Tony and Carmel Serra’s home on Rushworth Road. Indeed, Bernie remembers when the Rushworth road was unsealed, but more on that later. His family roots run deep in this area. Great Grandfather John migrated to Australia from Ireland in 1854, setting up a wheel-wright business in Epping. He retired in 1871 and moved north to join his son Charles (Bernie’s Grandfather) who, at 19, selected 120 acres of land on Winter Road, opposite what is now the Tatura cemetery. With money earnt contract ploughing, Charles went on to purchase surrounding land, to eventually own a square mile. Bernie’s father Pat continued to farm, with 40 acres on Rushworth Road. He also owned a Clydesdale horse and travelled the district servicing mares until he eventually gave it up in 1939, because people were buying tractors. Towards the end of this enterprise, Pat’s horse dropped dead, and Bernie recounts that Ray Starritt lent him a stallion called Kelso Sensation to finish his round. Pat was also a jockey, although a rather tall one, and rode in race meetings all over the district. He married Lorna Hanley in 1928, producing daughter Florenda (Cummins) and Bernie. Florenda was born at St Leonard’s Hospital on the corner of Hogan and Hanlon streets (which closed and became the residence of the Stewart family, but is now owned by the Bega Cheese Company) in 1931 and still resides in Melbourne. In the 1920’s, Pat’s brother (Jack – the local JP) bought the Commercial Hotel, and when the Clydesdale business faltered, Pat brought his family to live in the Hotel where they stayed for 20 years until it was sold in 1959. Bernie attended the local Catholic school before spending 3 years at St Bede’s College in Mentone. He left school at 16, to work for Charlie Ryan (Kevin “Gunna” Ryan’s father) on a sheep and cattle farm at Girgarre East. The years as a jockey were taking their toll, and Bernie returned to the hotel business to help out when his father had to go into hospital for operations in 1955. When the pub was sold in 1959, Pat Kerrins approached Bernie to learn the skills of herd improvement through Artificial Insemination, and after two seasons of this Bernie set up his own business, buying a block at the corner of Hogan and Ross streets from Tom Flanagan (the site of Flanagan’s original store). He sold Kangaroo Petrol (which later became Golden Fleece) and farm supplies – including wire and stock feed. He also sourced fence droppers from a sawmill in Euroa and for a time ran a good business drilling holes and supplying droppers for

fencing around all the State Rivers channels in the region, as well as for local farmers. Then in 1963, Bernie bought stock trucks so that, along with delivering petrol, he could work with the stock yards in moving cows out onto agistment. John Ryan and Peter Russell worked with Bernie on the stock trucks, with Adrian Barry and Billy Taylor assisting with hay carting and other jobs. At the same time, Bernie took on a dairy farm of around 200 acres, milking 80 cows that he bought from Jack Quick at Dhurringile. In 1983 he “swapped farms” with Peter Forster, to take up residence on Ferguson Road, just out of town, where he lived for 35 years, continuing his work carting stock. A brief stint with the local Agriculture Department in the tomato research program helped him buy a truck in the late 1980’s. Along the way, Bernie married wife Judy (nee Warburton) in 1959. She had also worked at the research station after her father Alf moved the family up from Melbourne for him to take up a position as Orchard Supervisor. Six children resulted, with Patricia (Keely) (worked with Rodney Shire) the eldest, then John (runs a local herd improvement business), Brendan (a civil engineer), Paul (a policeman), Andrew (truck driver for St Vincent de Paul) and Claire (a nurse). Among Bernie’s memories are the sad time when two of his school mates, sons of Galloway Stewart (of the family mentioned earlier and well-known local solicitor at the time), were taken aside by the Mother Superior to be told that their brother, a fighter pilot, had been shot down during the war. He also recalls when the dirt roads were covered with “white metal” which was quarried from a farm behind his and broke down to be very

Bernie Maher dusty in summer. A customer from the hotel, having had quite a few, evaded police one night by putting his foot down and churning up so much dust that they couldn’t see to chase him. He also recalls construction of the Rosella factory in Tatura, and the chimney laying on the ground – almost big enough to ride a horse through. Bernie’s wife Judy passed away in 2008, and in 2019 he moved to his current residence in Tatura. Grinning, Bernie says he moved in next to an ambulance driver and should be in good hands if the need arises! Apart from a family which includes 14 grandchildren, Bernie now enjoys bowling at Hill Top, never misses a local football game (he is a Life Member of Tatura Football Club having served for about 20 years on committee) and working with the Sacred Heart Parish. Congratulations on a great life Bernie, you have quite a story to tell! Bill Ashcroft

The contrast between my workplace previously in Hong Kong and my new offices in Darwin was diabolical to say the least. Hong Kong in the early to mid-60’s was dotted with impressive buildings featuring air conditioning and they were built to stand any kind of monsoonal weather of Hong Kong and Kowloon. When I first saw where I was to work in Darwin I nearly fell over. It was a dilapidated building with rusting iron roofing and seemed to slant at the front where the administration and journalistic staff were housed. I was soon to find out because Darwin was in the stages of having new suburbs built in the North that red dust storms were normal in the dry season and in the wet season the printers in the back section walked around with umbrellas to protect not only themselves but the metal print. There was even a resident green frog in the only toilet. It was unisex but I am certain that terminology then did not exist. The climate was not unlike Hong Kong, but the people were definitely different. Anyone back then who owned a coat and tie probably only ever used it for a funeral or a wedding. It seemed the staple diet of a lunchtime was a sartee as they called the meat on stick production. We of course call them satays but you risk being lynched if you ever say that

up North. The people were ultra-friendly, and it seemed most were oblivious to colour. Many families then were a mix of races and everyone seemed to play sport at least three times a week. My boss was British born but a true-blue Aussie and a great newspaper editor who espoused causes… good causes He had during WW11 been something of a commando and his days serving often gave him nightmares because of what he had had to do. It is why I admired him even more. The Mayor of Darwin soon after I arrived was Harry Chan, the first person of Chinese/ Asian ancestry to become a Mayor in Australia and he was also to become President of the Legislative Council. He was so loved that when he died every denominational leader spoke at his funeral and Darwin virtually stopped work as his funeral cortege left the church. But I was to moonlight in Darwin meaning I was to have other jobs as well as being Sporting Editor of the daily newspaper. My boss encouraged this because he felt it help sell papers, so I did sporting commentary work for the local commercial radio station and then later the same for the commercial television station, NTD Channel 8. I think it safe to say Darwin is where I learnt to really love writing, loved my sport even more and loved people whom I still do today.

THE BANJO PATERSON STATUE AT YEOVAL Yeoval is a small town between Parkes and Wellington in central NSW. On Wednesday 17th of February 2021, a large bronze statue of Andrew Barton “Banjo” Paterson was unveiled there to celebrate the 157th birthday of the famous poet and author who spent much of his childhood in the area. The statue, sculpted by Paul Smits of Melbourne was unveiled by Ian “Macca” McNamara who hosts “Australia All Over” on ABC Radio every Sunday morning. Sadly, Paul Smits, 32 years old, had a heart attack at home the night before and did not receive the acclaim due to him for his magnificent work. The statue stands outside a beautifully appointed museum containing hundreds of items relating to Banjo and the way of life that he depicted in his poetry. “Mulga Bill’s Bicycle” is a favourite poem and bicycles have become the town’s symbol with bicycles adorning buildings in and around the town. Banjo, his pen name, worked as a war correspondent in the South African Boer War and was promoted to major while fighting in World War 1. He was a newspaper editor, practised law as a solicitor in Sydney and was a radio broadcaster on ABC radio. He was also a keen golfer at the Royal Sydney Golf Club. His most famous work is “Waltzing Matilda” but most people will be familiar with “The Man from Snowy River”, “Clancy of the Overflow” and “The Man from Ironbark”. He also wrote several novels and one children’s book. The museum has on display a whole host of first editions, original letters, Paterson memorabilia, books, magazines and exciting items such as an original Cobb and Co stagecoach lamp. Items are numbered and an audio is available to explain their historical value. At the entrance to the museum, Clancy’s Café offers Devonshire Teas and a wide range of refreshments.

Close by is the Banjo Paterson Bush Park along the Buckinbah Creek. Near the road is a six metre bronze sculpture of the head of famous English sculptor Henry Moore which was sculpted by Merin Cherin and presented to Yeoval by the Waterhouse family, famous in racing circles. There are sandstone sculptures, totem poles, sculptured picnic seats, each with a separate sponsor and story. There is a mosaic arch and even a Holden ute painted in aboriginal motifs. It takes about half an hour to complete the entertaining walk beside the Buckinbah Creek. As Molly would say: Do yourself a favour and take a trip to Yeoval, enjoying Parkes and Wellington along the way. Jeff Baker

The 1st Tatura Scout group currently have a Joey Group (ages 5-7) and a Cub Group (ages 8-10) who meet weekly on Mondays from 6.30pm – 7.30pm. We are very excited to have recently welcomed a number of new families to Tatura 1st Scouts. We welcome you too. Please come and check out Scouts! In April we held a going up ceremony where six of our Joey Scouts members moved up to transition into Cub Scouts. This ceremony marked the official reforming of a Cub Scout section at Tatura. The District Scout Leader Jim Garcia and District Commissioner Peter were in attendance. We also participated in the Tatura Anzac Day Service at Memorial Gardens, where three of our Cub Scouts laid a wreath which was made out of poppies crafted by the group in memory of the Anzacs. A few volunteer Joeys and Cubs were also involved in helping to sell some of the Anzac day Merchandise down the Street in the lead up to Anzac Day which was a great experience for them. Some other fantastic activities we have had recently include Mother’s Day Activity night, the Tatura Scouts Boat Regatta “Rain Gutter Cruising”, pancake and tent night as well as a visit from the local CFA. In 2021, our Scout Group will be visiting or visited by a number of other Communities Emergency Services, which is always well received by the Scouts. We know they’re learning some great things and are having fun at the same time. We have a lot of focus on the young people learning skills to help them grow to be more resilient and to be better members of our community. We are looking for Joeys and Cubs to join our Groups for 2021. Adults are welcome too, as uniformed leaders or adult helpers. TATURA WATER TOWER ARTWORK Have you been wondering when the Tatura water tower is going to be painted? Well here is the latest. After many months, indeed years, of planning the painting on the water tower is going ahead in the next few weeks. The artwork will be done by Cam Scale, the artist who did the wonderful work on the Devenish silos. The final design is of Gen Sir John Monash on one side and a waterfall of Flanders red poppies on the other. Why Gen. Sir John Monash you may ask? He was the designer of the water tower in Tatura which was finished in 1912, and a champion of the then new idea of reinforced concrete. Initially the artwork was to go on the bowl at the very top of the tower however Goulburn Valley Water are having issues with seepage so it was decided that the artwork would go on the body of the tower, a much larger area. The initial cost of the artwork is $35,000. More than $25,000 in the form of a grant was received from the state government. The Tatura RSL and Tatura Rotary have been busy raising funds to make up the shortfall, and to ensure funds are available for the ongoing maintenance costs. A special run around town and a blanket muster in Hogan Street on the 15th May also raised funds. The project has had great support from local politicians, past and present, and the Monash family have also been very supportive. The unveiling of the completed artwork will take place at 11am on Sunday 27th June 2021.

HARSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL At Harston this term we have lots of different and exciting things happening. We are lucky enough to be involved in some great free programs that have been offered to small schools due to the Covid19 Pandemic that started when we returned to face to face learning in 2020. Every week we participate with up to 6 other small schools in science via Webex run by the Discovery Centre in Bendigo. This has been a fun and exciting experience for the children while covering the science curriculum. The Discovery Centre send us everything that is required for us to fully participate in this program and to be able to do the experiments. This term in F-2 they are learning about Marvellous bodies and Chemical Science and in 3-6 learning about Forces and Liquids, solids and gases. We are also looking forward to 4 incursions to further our knowledge and understanding in Science. Our 3-6 students are also lucky enough to be accepted to do the BlueSky dance program for term 2 and 3. This involves 3 sessions online and then an incursion later this term to put it all together. The students are enjoying learning about dance and movement. Our students also enjoyed a visit to Riverlinks, Eastbank to watch The Midnight Gang by David Walliams. This is what they thought “It was hilarious and my favourite part was when Granny was flying around with balloons being chased by the ambulance.” - Brian “I liked it because it was funny. My favourite part was when they went to the North Pole.” - Zalea “I liked it because it was funny and I liked the Midnight Gang.” - Elly “It was funny and when the Midnight Gang went out at night.”- Liam “I liked the bit when Tom was on top of the ambulance chasing Granny. It was really funny.” - Torri “I liked it because it was funny and really well done. My favourite part was when Tom put on the dress and when they were chasing Granny around.”- Harmony “My favourite part was when the Headmaster chased Tom around.”- Halen “It was funny and I liked it when Tom put on the dress and the Headmaster chased him around.” –Samika We also enjoyed having the visiting art teacher Miss B from SAM come and work with us and Dhurringile Primary School for an afternoon creating a mascot for SAM. We welcome any prospective enrolments in Foundation and other year levels for 2022 and encourage you to come and have a look at our school and see what we have to offer. TATURA SMALL ENGINES Father and son team, Andy and Mark Ketteridge, are the owners and operators of Tatura Small Engines, a new business at 98 Ross Street (next door to the Ross Street Cafe). They are both fully qualified as motorcycle and small engine mechanics. When in their workshop one can see the numerous certificates hanging on the wall. Andy has worked in the industry for nearly 40 years since leaving school and Mark joined him 10 years ago. They basically work on anything with a small engine, be it a Motorcycle, Whipper Snipper, Chainsaw, Brush Cutter, Lawn Mower or even a Boat. They do all forms of service and rebuilds, suspension work or basically anything required. In fact, they are currently building a speedway engine for a local racing enthusiast.

Motorcycles are definitely their passion. Mark was telling me his only interest outside of work is riding his Harley and working on old cars. Andy has four sons and one daughter and each of the boys followed him into motorbike racing, both road and motorcross, where they have travelled around Victoria, Southern New South Wales and Tasmania. In fact, his eldest son came 7th in the Australian Championships, even though he was the only competitor who worked during the week and wasn't part of a professional racing team. Tatura Small Engines is open from 8.30 a.m. until 5 p.m. weekdays and will open Saturdays by appointment. There is no doubt Andy and Mark will do their best to be of good service. Janice Dreyer

Calothamnus One plant that is literally leaping out of its tube at the moment is the Common Net Bush (Calothamnus quadrifidus). The Net Bush (not to be confused with Tina Turners Nut Bush) is an evergreen shrub native to the south west of Western Australia. It is a hardy plant that can tolerate numerous soil types from granitic sands to loams and clays and locations from coastal regions to dry inland, and even some more humid regions. The Common Net Bush makes a good screen or wind break as it grows a dense sometimes woody branch structure with many long narrow needle-like leaves. It will generally grow 1.5 to 2m tall and wide. It has a lovely red bird attracting flower similar to a bottlebrush. Flowering is spring to summer. It will continue to produce flowers for many seasons with just a light prune after flowering. This is certainly a plant that once established will survive and flourish with very little care. Good growing Ash

HERBICIDE USE FOR REMOVAL OF NATIVE VEGETATION Landholders are being asked to apply for a permit before removing, destroying or lopping native vegetation, which includes spraying native vegetation with chemicals. It is crucial the Greater Shepparton community follow guidelines and legislation in place to protect native vegetation, including trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses. Native vegetation provides habitat for our plants and animals and delivers a range of services to the environment and people’s well-being. Mapping shows there is less than 2.5 per cent of pre-European settlement native vegetation remaining in the region. Guidelines for the removal, destruction or lopping of Native Vegetation, provided by the Victorian Government, needs to be understood to ensure correct processes are followed, including identification of the species and appropriate recommendations and options for proposed works on private land. This includes the need for landholders to apply for a planning permit through Greater Shepparton City Council during the planning and design stage of a project if any works or actions are likely to impact native vegetation. Greater Shepparton City Council is working closely with Agriculture Victoria to ensure compliance with the legislation. Fines have been recently issued following a joint investigation into the removal and spraying of roadside native vegetation in the Greater Shepparton region.

Janelle Howell and Phyll

PERSONAL CONTRIBUTIONS VALUED Marcia Andrews, Australian Trefoil Guild Adviser, forwarded Phyll Bramley a framed Certificate in recognition of her being the only one in Victoria to complete the Australian Trefoil Guild 75th Anniversary Booklet. Janelle Howell, State Commissioner of Trefoil Guild, presented Phyll Bramley with a certificate for Long Service Award for Girl Guides Victoria. On presenting this Certificate, she told Phyll, “Girl Guides look to past Leaders such as yourself, and the contributions you have made, and continue to offer as a role model; as to how they should contribute to our community - thank you! Your personal contribution is valued, appreciated and admired. I hope you continue to enjoy your time with Girl Guides and to help and encourage all that you interact with, to dream and imagine in a youthful way and together ‘change the world one Girl Guide at a time.” I am sure you will join with me in congratulating Phyll on her ongoing achievements. It is illegal to remove or destroy native vegetation on any Victorian roadside, including the use of chemicals for suppression of weeds or for fire risk fuel reduction. As part of the investigation, Agriculture Victoria collected plant samples which were analysed to confirm the chemicals used. The fine recipient has agreed to revegetate the impacted roadside with low growing shrubs during the year’s revegetation season. The incorrect or improper use of chemical sprays on native vegetation can cause significant damage and loss. To report roadside weeds or for further information on obtaining a permit, contact Greater Shepparton City Council or visit the website. h t t p s : / / w w w. e n v i r o n m e n t . v i c . g o v. a u / _ _ d a t a / a s s e t s / p d f _ file/0021/91146/Guidelines-for-the-removal,-destruction-or-loppingof-native-vegetation,-2017.pdf Permits can be obtained from Greater Shepparton City Council website www.greatershepparton.com.au/bpi/planning

BRINGING HOPE IN TOUGH TIMES The All Saints Tatura church building and hall was closed on March 24. It will remain closed to parishioners and the community until Government and Diocese restrictions associated with the coronavirus pandemic are lifted. Many school halls, church buildings, cathedrals and other places where people meet to worship are empty. In my 16 years of church ministry in different contexts, I have always begun each Sunday by thanking God for the opportunity and freedom to meet together. I never once thought that this would change in a peaceful democratic country like Australia. These areBailey exceptional times. Over the Easter weekend, George Ferguson and I placed artwork by one of our parishioners, Kate Peachey, on display outside the church building along with three crosses. The portraits captured Jesus’ journey to the cross and his resurrection. We chose to put up this display to help our community reflect on the true meaning of Easter; the sacrifice that Jesus made dying on the cross to reconcile people Ring the shop on 5824 3059 to to God. RODNEY BRANCH CWA Thankfully CWA is in full swing again now that most restrictions have been eased and members have been able to attend the Annual Associated Country Women of the World Walk (ACWW) recently walking to raise money for the work of the Association in rural areas around the world. We had an enjoyable day at Rushworth Branch’s morning coffee, which we look forward to each year. Also well supported was the Annual CWA Sunday with members travelling to a Winery near Colbinabbin by bus where a Church Service was held followed by a pizza lunch. Then on to the silos for a viewing and then cuppa and cake at the Colbo store. A lovely day very well organized by Gwen Ranson (Rodney Branch) and Mary Beck (Rushworth Branch) on behalf of our Group. Anzac Day saw members attend the Dawn Service and then two members Bev and Johanna laid a wreath at the mid-morning service on behalf of our Rodney members. Anzac Day also saw a request for Anzac biscuits to be made at Head Office for a fundraiser. Our member and CWA Board member Janette Mason whipped up “300” in her usual I can do it attitude. A job well done. Lyn Trezise our member and State Vice President requested a donation from a company recently hoping for a few items to offset the cost of raffles for Head Office of CWA and our local GV West Group Craft Exhibition. She was astounded to be told there were three pallets of goods waiting to be picked up in Melbourne! Fortunately, Gwen and Alec Ranson generously answered her call for help and picked up two pallets and unloaded them on their return and then Lyn accompanied a

CWA Sunday Rodney Group member’s daughter in a small truck to pick up the third. After many, many hours of sorting the goods, they are now beginning to be distributed to the various organizations that CWA supports in our area. Our Junior CWA branch continues to thrive, and this month made felt birds. It is amazing how many girls remember the stitches of embroidery they have been taught in the past. A unique problem was many of our “older” members who assist our Juniors struggled to thread the needles for them, normal glasses often not sufficient, seems magnifying glasses now needed!! TATURA COMMUNITY PLAN COMMITTEE.

ACTIVE MOVES

Report from April meeting; The recent meeting of the Community Plan Committee was an eventful affair with the first meeting back in the Senior Citizens Rooms for more than a year! As many would have observed the Walking Track along O’Reilly Road is now complete and being well used; the Walks and Rides Committee is always looking at opportunities for enhancement of the track network. Our Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum is really moving ahead, they have been granted funds from the council to renew carpet in the older area and have wonderful news. It has just been announced that they have gained accreditation by the Australian Museums and Galleries Association of Victoria. Congratulations must go to the hard-working committee at the Museum. Transition Towns held a clean-up roadside day recently, with Dhurringile road being the focus. They retrieved over 3000 items. Let’s all try to contribute to our town by keeping our town clean. Transition Tatura will again hold their Environmental Arts Competition, open to all Goulburn Valley students using their favourite medium such as Visual Art, Performance, Literature, or Media arts. Total prize pool is $1000.00 with winners announced 27th August 2021. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/transitiontatura. Are you aware Tatura has its own committee working to transition Tatura to Zero carbon emissions by 2030. Yes, Zero Carbon Tatura (ZCT) is real, and a new strategy has been released looking at 6 pillars that will help focus action across the community (Energy, transport, buildings, waste, industry, agriculture and land use). A very energetic committee has already made application for a feasibility study towards a solar battery that can store the excess energy from the community, to be available for use when needed. See www.zerocarbontatura.org. The Tatura Public Art committee has been formed and are eager with ideas flowing and lots of brainstorming. If you missed the first couple of meetings and would like to be involved, please call Carl on 0419 118 237. Rotary are again out there lending a helping hand. On May 15 the Rotary inter-town 100-year commemorative relay was held as a fundraiser for the Tatura RSL water tower painting project. Our Senior Citizens are back in action and still a lively happy group. If you have been considering joining this lovely group please, now is the time to do this. New members are always made to feel welcome. Contact Veronica Dowell Last but not least, a funny story to let you know that every occupant living in Tatura keeps fit!!!! At our previous meeting, Council put forward the results of a pedestrian survey done at Lake Bartlett from Sept to Dec 2020. On some days, numbers of pedestrians varied from 780 to 11,681 on the 2/11/20. Our committee queried these numbers only to find out after investigation by the Council, that there is a huge ant nest at this location and our friendly ants are keeping fit and boosting our numbers. What a funny ANT-ic. Our meetings are held at Tatura Senior Citizens rooms at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of each month and you are all very welcome to attend. Sharon Hopkins

MURTAGH'S MARKET

6

Dennis and Yvonne Murtagh are opening a new business in the empty shop on the corner of Hogan and Park Street, which will sell furniture, antiques, bric-a-brac and collectibles. There will also be goods from Jody and Troy who have run Mancave Madness at the Scout Hall on the last Sunday of each month. They will be renting a space in the new store to display their items for sale. Both Dennis and Yvonne have been working extremely hard to have the opening, which will presumably be prior to this article going to print. Without a lot of money, they are doing the very best they can and it sounds to me as if it will be a good addition to Tatura. Dennis and Yvonne have been selling for over 25 years, at such places as Solar City Market in Shepparton and Mooroopna Market but will be mainly known to Tatura residents for their shop "Just Destiny" near the Hogan/Ross Streets roundabout. They have been married for 26 years, together every day since and it is very rare to see one without the other. Both

born in Swan Hill, they met in Shepparton, moved here around the year 2000 and have three grown children and nine grandchildren. When asked what they like to do outside of work their answers weren't unexpected when they both said they like to check around Op shops. Dennis said it all when he stated "we love history, old things, furniture, anything from the past". That was certainly obvious when I saw some of his huge record collection and the decor of their home. They had an incredible find some years back when they purchased an old teapot for under five dollars that later sold at auction for eightyfive thousand dollars! Obviously a once in a lifetime find. Dennis believes Tatura is "going ahead" and they just hope they can make a go of this new venture. I don't see why they shouldn't. Janice Dreyer

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL The students at Dhurringile PS have been out and about within the community the past month including laying of the ANZAC wreath in Murchison and attending Harston school for our art lesson. ANZAC With ANZAC day being on a Sunday this year, we constructed our handmade wreaths during the week and laid one in Murchison on the Friday afternoon. At Dhurringile, we try to be as sustainable as possible. With this in mind, our wreath was made to be recycled. The poppies were old egg cartons cut up and painted while the base was gum branches made into a circle. Thank you to Lachie and his family for laying our other wreath in Tatura. We were very proud to be able to construct our own wreaths, lay them locally and pay honour to our ANZAC’s. We look forward to how creative we can be next year to pay our respects. Art lesson with Harston The Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) is currently visiting local students to assist in creating a mascot. For our first fortnightly art lesson this term, we travelled over to Harston PS to find out about SAMs and the new mascot. Each of the students learnt about other mascots before having a go at drawing and then making their mascot out of playdough. The drawings are being collected by SAMs while the playdough constructions got to go home. Thank-you to Harston for hosting and including us in the lesson. Studies of the Body This term the students are learning all about body systems during their science lessons. Last week the students constructed animal bodies using playdough, then adding skeletons to their designs using pipe cleaners. Lisa Wilson Proud Principal @ Dhurringile PS

QUIZ answers

BAKED DONUTS I have never previously made donuts but recently bought myself a donut pan after seeing a recipe for baked donuts. Not only are they better for me and still taste right but also so extremely easy to make. The other thing I like is there is no need for anything other than a bowl and spoon. Ingredients: 1 Cup Plain Flour 1/3 Cup of Caster Sugar 3/4 Teaspoon of Baking Powder 3/4 Teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda 1/2 Cup of Plain Yoghurt 1 Egg 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Method: Mix all dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Mix yoghurt, egg and vanilla together and add to the dry ingredients. Put mixture in tray sections til 3 thirds filled. Bake at 190 degrees for 10 - 12 minutes. Sprinkle with sugar or cinnamon sugar as wished. Enjoy! (I did) Janice Dreyer

Struggle Street. Don’t feel too bad. In order for people to be unexceptional, somebody has to be worse than that and I’m sorry to say that’s you. On the other hand, if you had guessed (c) for every answer you would have gotten four correct so perhaps you were just unlucky. 3-5. Bland Street. The majority of the population fall into this category. After all, average is both normal and safe. If you stand out from the crowd you become a tall poppy and we know what happens to them so rejoice in your ordinariness. 6-7. Above average (Sort of). Well done! You’re clearly better than normal. Of course, you should realise that you can now be legitimately called abnormal. So, according to the Oxford dictionary, you are exceptional, irregular and deviating from type. Ask your friends if that sounds like you. 8-9. Smarty Pants. Excellent. Congratulations! You’re smarter than 95% of the population. Whether you choose to believe statistic is up to you. Oh, you do believe it. I thought you might. However, it also means you’re not as smart as 5%. Oh, I see. You don’t believe that particular statistic. 10. Genius. Every question correct! Go you! Lucky for you it was multiple choice because there were a couple you weren’t too sure about, weren’t there? However, you now have a month to bask in the glory by asking other people how they did on the quiz. SUDOKU No. 60

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS There has been a lot going on this Term at the Community House. We are absolutely rapt with our new Harvest swap trolley built by Jarrod Kelly and funded from a grant from Council. Since installing the table in the community house/library shared foyer, the community has been donating some wonderful produce, including limes, lemons, feijoas, persimmons, pink lady apples and even some flower bulbs. Thank you so much! Let’s keep sharing our produce and reducing food waste in Tatura. Our Chop and Chat group are going from strength to strength, with about half of the jams and sauces priced and packaged and ready to go. The goods are on sale from the Community House. The last cooking day focussed on pumpkins which were donated, and not a scrap was wasted. The team cooked up some beautiful soup and roasted the seeds and the skin, which was absolutely scrummy. If you would like to help out and learn some great preserving skills along the way, give us a call or drop in. The team here at the community house are focussing on supporting children and adults with reading, writing and maths. Maybe you know someone who could do with some confidence and skills building. It is never too late to learn, and it doesn’t matter if English is not your first language, we have experts to here to help. Last month we featured our school student tutors, this month get to know John and Sam who run the adult literacy and numeracy programs.

COMING UP… Book in for our Biggest Morning Tea Fundraiser being held Tuesday 15th June at 10am. Enjoy a beautiful Devonshire tea and try your luck in the raffle. For a bit of fun, we encourage everyone to wear a funny, favourite or fancy hat. All proceeds go to the Cancer Council. Continuing on for the rest of the term we have free after school tutoring for primary and secondary school children, exercise programs, ukulele, genealogy and much more. Head to our website www.tatcom.vic.edu.au our facebook page or drop in to the Community House (located with the library) 12-16 Casey

A Mother’s Day reflection Mother’s Day has come and gone. Whilst for many it is a beautiful day of breakfast in bed and homemade gifts, it is not always a joyous celebration for all. It can be excruciating for many, particularly for those who have experienced the loss of a child or a mother. For others it can be a painful reminder of a strained relationship, abandonment or disappointment. How, then, should we view Mother’s Day? Churches, communities and families struggle with this question every year. Do we ignore those hurting and go on celebrating? Do we suppress the celebration in hopes of lessening the pain around us? At All Saints Tatura Anglican Church, we celebrated Mother’s Day in a simple way. We prayed a blessing over all our mothers and those in our community - we also prayed for those who were hurting, lonely and in pain that they may be comforted by God. After the service we shared homemade Devonshire Tea, encouraged one another and gave presents to mums and grandmothers as a small token of appreciation. To our mothers Thank you. Thank you for doing so much. Thank you for making sacrifices in your life to raise us. Thank you for not giving up even when failed to notice your efforts and hurt you in our selfishness. Thank you for teaching us the important things in life - teaching us to share, to apologise and to consider how others are feeling. Thank you for teaching us how to drive, how to handle money and how to look after our ourselves. Thank you for teaching us to value our education and opportunities, to take responsibility and to finish what we start. To our grandmothers Thank you for making life beautiful and fun. Thank you for spoiling us and teaching us not to take ourselves too seriously. Thank you for teaching us to be patient, humble and gracious. Thank you for sharing your wisdom in each of life’s stages. Thank you for making time to chat and being willing to listen to us. Thank you for not judging us when our lives have turned out differently to how we expected. Thank you for letting us work things out and make our own mistakes. To our ‘adopted’ mothers Thank you for receiving us as we were and adopting us into your family like one of your own. Thank you for loving us when we felt vulnerable. Thank you for backing us when we were scared. Thank you for encouraging us when we were filled with fear and self-doubt. Thank you for supporting us by thinking of us, writing to us and making time for us. Thank you for your wise words and timely advice. Thank you for being open with us about your own fears and inadequacies. Thank you for showing us unconditional love. To those grieving the loss of their mother or child We stand with you acknowledging your grief, your loss and your sadness. As you reflect on your loved one today may the God who understands suffering, have compassion on you and give you peace. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”. Isaiah 41:10 (NIV) Rev. Simba Musvamhiri

Helen Newton launching the display

LATEST ATTRACTION AT MURCHISON HERITAGE CENTRE Our latest display, Four Lives of Dhurringile Estate is proving of great interest to many visitors since it was launched. Helen Newton officially opened the new display on Easter Saturday as her father Jack Lowry farmed the land surrounding Dhurringile Mansion for many years and Helen grew up on the property. It is quite extraordinary, and must be unique for Victoria, that an outstanding mansion on the Victorian Heritage Register has had such contrasting uses over its lifetime of 140 plus years. From a substantial family Mansion and farming property, to an Internment Camp for Civilians then German Prisoners of War Camp during World War 2, becoming a Rural Training Farm for young boys from UK, to the present use as a Low Security Prison. This temporary display will be in place until we close for our winter recess mid-June, so if you weren’t able to get to see it yet, call in on any Saturday morning from 10am to 12.30pm check it out! If you belong to a group and would like to visit at another time during the week and would enjoy learning about Murchison’s diverse history, simply contact Janet on 5826 2363 to organise for us to open up specially. We can provide morning or afternoon tea, slide show presentation on a variety of topics and a stroll through the gallery. If your group comes on a bus, we can arrange for a town tour with a local guide hopping aboard to explain Murchison’s unique history. Hope to see you at the Heritage Centre, 4 Stevenson Street, soon. Kay Ball, President, Murchison & District Historical Society.

WORLD EVENTS in June In America, this is both Fruit and Vegies Month and Candy Month. Only in America would they not see an issue with this. Perhaps that’s why toffee apples were invented. June 1 – Say Something Nice Day. The purpose of this day is to counteract bullying and the lack of civility and common courtesy that is growing among people in today’s world. Anonymous trolls on social media are to blame for much of this. You know you have a problem when you have to have a special day in order to say something nice. June 2 – Dinosaur Day. This is nothing to do with the numerous old folk who can’t use a mobile phone or who drive at 75kph in the right-hand lane when everyone else is trying to do 100kph. No, this day is all about discovering our ancestral past and inspiring scientific curiosity in our young folk through the wonder of dinosaurs. The desire to become

a palaeontologist has to start somewhere. June 3 – Hug Your Cat Day. This day shows our appreciation for the unconditional love we get from all our pets. If you don’t have a cat of your own to hug then I recommend that you don’t attempt to hug your neighbour’s cat as it will probably end badly. June 4 – Socrates Day. This is a day to think beyond the constraints of the physical world and enter that of the metaphysical. If you want to have a robust debate with another intelligent mind, then pose this question, “Does free will exist?” Do we just follow within the constraints of society, religion and culture or do we really make up our own minds? I have written about this in an article elsewhere in this edition of the Bulletin, room permitting of course. June 6 – Gardening Exercise Day. Most older folk understand the exercise benefits of an hour spent tending the garden. However, if you have anybody under the age of 21 living at home, then this is the ideal day to introduce them to their first gardening experience. However, please be aware that leaving their comfortable, electronic social world and stepping out into the real physical world of dirt, bugs and plants will be quite scary for them, so perhaps it may be best if they just a spend a few minutes at first, and gradually build up to a full hour. Having a safe space for them to retreat to and a couple of trigger words will help reduce the shock and lessen the possibility of nightmares. June 7 – International Yo-yo Day. We all know that what goes up must come down so yo-yos were invented by scientists to prove that the opposite is not always true. June 8 – World Ocean Day. The purpose of this day is to spread awareness about the importance of the ocean in our lives. The ocean generates most of the oxygen we breathe, regulates the climate and feeds us and so its health is critical to our well-being. Interestingly, only 10% of the ocean has been explored and scientists estimate that there are still approximately nine million species yet to be discovered in the ocean’s depths.

June 12 – World Magic Day. Magic Day started with a Houdini Day, the first of which took place in the summer of 1927, less than one year after the famous magician’s death. His wife presented a trophy in honour of him on that day. As magic appears to be disappearing from our lives at an alarming rate, it is the responsibility of every adult to learn at least one simple magic or card trick with which to entertain our young children. With a little bit of practice, plucking a disappearing coin from a child’s ear isn’t that hard to do. Remember, every time someone disowns magic, a fairy dies. I know, it’s shocking but true. June 14 – World Blood Donor Day. Why don’t you celebrate this occasion by dropping in at the Blood Bank? The life you save could be your own. June 15 – Global Wind Day. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a date celebrated by cabbage enthusiasts or gasbag politicians. It is a day for discovering wind, its powers and the possibilities to change the world. As most politicians are more interested in talking about changing the world than actually doing anything constructive, then perhaps it is for gasbag politicians after all. June 16 – Fly A Kite Day. Associated with Global Wind Day, your best chance of flying a kite is near a political rally. Flying a kite is very relaxing and carefree, (unless you’re Charlie Brown). You’re never too old to fly a kite and it may bring back some wonderful childhood memories. June 19 – International Sauntering Day. This day is all about taking it easy, relaxing and going for a stroll by yourself. It’s a chance to escape from the frantic rat-race and spend some time getting to know yourself. You might find that you have a lot in common. June 20 – World Refugee Day. The United Nations hosts this event to draw the public’s attention to the millions of refugees who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution. Apparently watching it on the news each night is not sufficient coverage. June 21 – World Handshake Day. This day was thought up by Ivan Zupa who heard the following words from an old man, “My son, place your hand in the sea and you are united with the whole world.” Because we live some distance from the sea, I recommend placing your hand in Lake Bartlett to experience the same effect. I also recommend that you wash your hand extremely well afterwards. June 24 – International Swim a Lap Day. Studies have shown that swimming offers many health benefits. Because a swimmer uses all of his or her muscles while swimming, the activity is considered to be an excellent all-around workout. Not only does it burn substantial amounts of calories, it also increases heart activity and builds muscle strength. In addition, swimming can reduce stress and help people relax. When people ask how you’re doing, you can answer, “Swimmingly”. June 30 – International Meteor Day. The average meteor or meteoroid is about the size of a pebble. About 15,000 tonnes of meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere every day but few of them actually reach the surface. When they do, they are called meteorites. If you want to see a real meteorite up close then visit the Murchison museum. John Kriesfeld

HARSTON CWA Oh Goodness what a busy time it is during the month of May. The Harston branch held their monthly meeting following Mother’s Day. Mrs. Margaret Chance presented each and every member a beautiful bunch of chrysanthemums, these are the traditional flower representing Mother’s Day. Our well wishes extend to Mrs. Marie Wright recovering from an operation and thoughts are with Mrs. Margaret Corrigan and Mrs. Fay Alexander as they await their operations. Old age awaits us all. We had a guest speaker arranged by Mrs. Jennifer Corrigan, from Njernda Aboriginal corporation, Foster Care, located in Echuca attend our meeting to enlighten us all. Foster Care programmes provide safe and supportive homes for children when they are unable to live with their own families, types of foster care being Respite, Emergency, Short or Long Term Care. The lady whose name is Kylie, drove for two hours from Castlemaine to speak, she bought a young child along currently in her care. Along with a trainee named Sharon, they explained the process involved in being a Foster Carer, this isn’t for everyone, and for one you need understanding and patience as well as being able to provide a safe home. Foster Carers are in need as there are a lot of children out there who are in harm’s way. The Group President Mrs. Jenny Goonan, with Mrs. Lyn Tresize presented the ladies with a very large donation of baby goods, including toiletries and nappies. Rushworth CWA held a ‘Two of’ morning coffee, where members the Goulburn Valley West Group of which Harston are part of. This day was very entertaining as two pairs of twins came along to entertain us. Phylis played the hand accordion whilst Aylis played the mouth org an. The CWA Annual State Conference and AGM will be held at Ballarat in the Cattle pavilion on 28th and 29th May 2021. Locally here in Tatura, The Rodney Branch have a member nominated for the State Board and we wish her well in being successful. Fingers crossed Janette Mason… I voted for you! The first Sunday in May is known as CWA Sunday where members attend a church service in their town, this year we travelled to the Shiraz republic vineyard at Colbinabbin, where the service was zoomed to the local churches. We enjoyed a lunch of wood fired pizzas before looking at the Silos. So much to do, so little time, being part of a voluntary organisation is so rewarding. Here’s to a peaceful June, regards Mrs. Marilyn Pell. CWA Harston and Goulburn Valley West Group.

SACRED HEART SCHOOL 3/4 CAMP

On Tuesday the 27th of April, Grade 3/4 went to Billabong Ranch in Echuca. We were so excited to be going to camp and arrived at school with our bags packed and ready to go. While we were at Billabong Ranch, we got to do so many activities like using the bungee trampolines, horse grooming, the commando course and heaps more. We all had the best time and couldn’t wait to come home and tell our families all about our time away! - Class 3/4NB Sally Dickinson
