WYBALENA INDEPENDENT LIVING UNITS

Recipes

Would you like to be a member of Wybalena? Wybalena is the name of the eleven independent living units located in Impey Street Murchison. They are owned by the members of Murchison Retirement Village Inc. and managed by an elected committee. Murchison Retirement Village is a voluntary, not-for-profit Incorporated Association. The eleven units provide comfortable and affordable homes with an undercover carport for one vehicle, for couples and individuals who have retired. The Committee would like to see more members of the Murchison community become members of the Murchison Retirement Village Incorporated Association to plan adequately for the future and to build on this village that was established more than 30 years ago for retired people of Murchison. We need support from the whole community.

This would have to be the easiest Fudge recipe ever.

RODNEY BRANCH CWA

When the wearing of face masks in Victoria was announced, our Rodney member Janette Mason was contacted by her son at Trevaskis Engineering to see if she could make fifty face masks over the weekend and have them ready by 9 am Monday morning. Assisted by Gwen Ranson, she had the fifty face masks, mainly in navy blue, finished on time. Neither of them did anything else over that weekend. Janette eventually was able to source sufficient elastic even though elastic is now as scarce as toilet paper was at the beginning of this pandemic, but fortunately the ladies are not fighting in the aisles over elastic. The girls soon found out it takes longer than you think to make the masks. The masks looked very smart on the workers as you can see from the photograph of the workers with Janette and Gwen. The company thought so highly of their work they gave a generous donation to our branch above the original price quoted and Janette and Gwen’s efforts turned into quite a welcome fundraiser for Rodney. There was a nice post on Facebook saying that the CWA ladies could be relied on for completing a task at short notice and on time. Members are also busy making beanies and scarves for the homeless, a large donation of new clothing including windcheaters, track pants, underwear and socks were donated to The Caroline Chisolm Society, toiletries and knitted teddy bears to the Marian Community, adult and children’s beanies to The Bridge, all which will be distributed locally. Following a request from GV Health for a variety of items needed at the hospital, members are now working on these. We may be in isolation but the work behind the scenes by our members continues to support those in need. - Janice Barrett, Publicity Officer

SPEND LOCALLY TO WIN!

If you ever really wanted a reason to shop locally here it is! Loyal customers who spend their money locally will now have a chance to win a share of over $2,000 worth of goods and services offered in six major prize draws. Tatura Cut & Mow owner David Tartaglia came up with the idea to lift spirits during the coronavirus pandemic, promote local shopping and show appreciation to customers. After initially contacting a couple of businesses he found that the idea was supported by almost 30 outlets offering prizes, vouchers or sponsorships. To enter, customers need to shop at one of the participating businesses between Monday, September 14 and Wednesday, November 18 and complete a ticket to enter the draw. “A Facebook page will be created for the community to follow, which will

list the participating businesses, a detailed outline of the prizes on offer and information about the draws,” Kirsty Richardson, owner of Mes Amours, said. The formation of a Tatura Business Collective - a less formal version of a traditional chamber of commerce - where business owners can come together and share ideas is againz on the table. Kirsty said the idea was initially floated after the success of the Tatura Christmas Spectacular, staged for the first time in 2019, where locals enjoyed an evening of live music, late night shopping and outdoor dining. “We would like to promote the idea of the Tatura Business Collective and encourage other local businesses to join,” Kirsty said. “Once we have enough interest, we will determine a plan to either meet as a group or form a regular online discussion for future collaboration and community business ventures.”

SUPERMARKET OPENS Tatura once again has two supermarkets. Reddrop’s Tatura Foodworks opened on September 9 much to the delight of locals who now have a choice of local supermarkets at which to shop. Since the closing of the previous Foodworks over a year ago, there has been a lot of speculation as to what was going to happen to the building. Chief Executive of the Reddrop Group, Michael Reddrop, said that, like the previous owners, they are a family run business. He said that his family has been involved in supermarket retailing for over 50 years building, on the solid foundation laid by their parents. Their aim is to always be a part of the community, not just a business. Customers will be well taken care of and Reddrops care about the little things customers need, whether it be home delivery or the odd ingredient wanted now and then. Locals manage and work in the store. The store manager, Craig Bramley, recently retired manager of the IGA store in North Shepparton, was approached by Reddrop to manage the Tatura store. Craig began his career in retailing with Kings Foodworks store in Kyabram. He and his wife Anne live in Mooroopna, his daughter Jayme is a nurse in GV Health and his son Thomas works at Tatura Milk. Mum Phyl, still lives in Tatura where she has been involved in the community for many years. With a local background, Craig feels very much part of the Tatura community and looks forward to working with the Reddrop Group in Tatura.

TATURA The Early Years - Golf

The beginnings of golf in Tatura drew the attention of both of the current newspapers of that time during the first week of April 1909. The Free Press observed: “The golf craze has struck Tatura and an endeavour is being made to form a club here. Some of the fair sex have taken the game up and may be seen tramping around the outskirts of the town with their bundle of sticks.” The Guardian commented: “During the past week quite a number of enthusiasts have taken up the game, and a 4-hole course has been laid out on the vacant ground at the rear of the public gardens. It is understood that the trustees of the racecourse would grant the use of the ground for golf links.” Mr H. S. Davy convened the meeting at which the club was formed, he and Mr Simpson have already interviewed Cr Thomas Hogan regarding his paddocks adjoining the railway line. The councillor had consented readily, and ‘Hogan’s Paddock’ was chosen for the links. Subscriptions were fixed at five shillings for gentlemen and two shillings and sixpence for ladies, and 48 members were soon enrolled. By the end of the month the hardest work was done. The Guardian reported in April 1909: “The course has been carefully selected, and the number of hazards, such as the town drain and railway line, are sufficient to try the skill of the most expert player. The ancient game has many attractions. It is fascinating in the extreme, provides healthy and invigorating exercise, provides and excellent opportunity for the display of skill and science, and in many cases serves to discover the imperfect tempers of many individuals.” The opening ceremony was held on April 28. “Just before the conclusion of tea, rain descended in torrents, and the social game was

abruptly terminated. The function was attended by fifty ladies and gentlemen, and Cr Hogan, J.P., formally declared the links open for play.” In May 1913 new links were opened on the lake reserve and racecourse. “Numerous bunkers and pot-holes have been discovered in all directions.” Play was abandoned during the First World War, then the Golf Club found itself in dispute with the Coursing Club which had long held a lease at the racecourse and according to Mr J. Hogan had “the best hares in the state!” The Guardian reported that local farmer J. W. Wilson was anxious that “ewes and lambs should not be disturbed at lambing time”, and “Mr Pigdon guaranteed that they would not play golf while ewes and lambs were grazing on the course,” adding that “the golf club was quite prepared to cut thistles on the portion used for golf.” Meanwhile, the golf season of 1924 was spent on a reserve adjoining the public gardens where regular working bees were held. In 1925 nine holes were laid out on the eastern portion of the racecourse, and in 1932 a horse-drawn mower was purchased by the club, presumably for cutting the thistles. For another thirty years the golf course was to occupy portions of the lake reserve and racecourse, and the rent paid to the Shire Council for the use of the ‘Lake paddock’ in 1937 was twelve pounds a year. Six holes were added in 1948, and the 1949 season was played over 18 holes. The subscription was raised from tens shillings and sixpence to two pounds and two shillings “owing to the advent of the 40 hours week and increases in the basic wage.” - Source: Tatura and the Shire of Rodney, W.H Bossence (available for purchase from the Tatura Museum)

Tatura Primary School students and staff are looking forward to getting back to on-site learning during the second week of Term 4 in early October. When we return, we will take time to reflect on the last few months of change and consider what we have all learned. We will find that we have been challenged in many ways that have built up our resilience, our independence and our stamina. We will find that our parents and grandparents have become very familiar with our schooling and learned many new skills themselves. They have shared in our teaching and learning and for their support, we are very grateful. We have had greater communication between teachers and families as our classroom teachers have been in touch with families at least once every week by phone. We have all learned new ways to do things. Staff have developed their computer skills, and we have all learned to meet on a variety of virtual platforms. We have taught the children to be patient and caring, for themselves and others. We have been spending more time at home and, hopefully, been made more aware of the natural world around us. Spring has arrived and the birds are filling our skies with sweet sounds all day long, just as the wattles are painting a bright, yellow glow over our parks and gardens. We hope everyone in our community stays safe and well and we look forward to enjoying Term 4 - ‘achieving together’. Please Note: It is with sadness that we must confirm that our planned celebrations for a ‘Back-to TPS’ have been cancelled. In late October, we were to celebrate 50 years on our current site. We will now plan for an even bigger and better celebration in 2024 when the school clocks-up 150 years since it started on the original site in 1874. - Susanne Gill, Principal

SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL The current restrictions have changed the way we learn and communicate at Sacred Heart this term. Students have continued learning from home using technology to communicate with their teachers. There have been lots of wonderful pieces of work that have been created in the specialist subjects of Art and Italian.

Our Foundation children for 2021 have also participated in their first school Meet and Greet using technology. During this time children drew a picture and have been asked to place it into the school mailbox to familiarise themselves with the school they will go to in 2021. - Vanessa Tartaglia

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle

“I can’t believe you are in hospital again Merle,” Agnes said as she came rushing in through the door. “Nor can I Agnes, and once again it is not my fault,” I said frowning and feeling very out of sorts. Agnes sat down next to the bed and patted my hand. “When your son phoned me, I was worried sick but he said you only had a few minor injuries.” I nodded. “I’m not badly injured Agnes, but because of my age they are keeping me in overnight for observation. I should be home tomorrow if everything goes well. Did you find your way around the hospital okay Agnes? I know it can be very confusing.” “It’s not confusing for me, Merle,” Agnes replied looking like the cat that swallowed the cream. “You see, Fred and I have been asked to come along and play for the oldies a few times so I am quite familiar with the layout.” I was momentarily startled. “Play for the oldies you say? Oh my, what a treat that must be for them.” “Oh, you bet, Merle,” replied Agnes enthusiastically. Apparently old Mrs McCartney had been quite unresponsive for months, but once we began playing and I started singing, well she just opened her eyes and stared at us. The nurses were amazed. Isn’t that wonderful Merle?” “I can only imagine her response Agnes. How wonderful for you.” Agnes smiled appreciatively, “Thank you as always Merle, you are one of our greatest supporters.” Well, I couldn’t tell her that she had a voice to wake the dead, could I, so I changed the

subject. “Let me tell you what happened to land me in here yet again. As you know last time was when you gave me those faulty runners and Garry made me go for that dangerous walk.” I was still speaking when Agnes butted in and said, “I am not sure that is exactly correct Merle. You may remember that we did go through that and sort it out some time back. So, why don’t we stick to the present situation. Your son, Kevin, said you had a minor car accident.” “Indeed I did Agnes. I was coming back from Shepparton and this car was tail-fencing me something awful.” Agnes shook her head. “I think the term is tailgating Merle.” “Yes, whatever. This person was driving right up behind me and being very intimidating.” “Were you driving too slowly, Merle?” asked Agnes. “Not at all. I was doing the speed limit and even a couple more to be honest. He was driving so close I expected to turn around and see him sitting on my back seat. My first instinct was to speed up but then I thought why should I? I decided that people should not be forcing other drivers to drive faster than the limit just because they want to speed and be road bullies.” Agnes nodded emphatically. “I could not agree more, Merle, I absolutely despise tailgaters. They are a clear danger to other drivers. And where are the police? Nowhere, that’s where. They never seem to catch them. They speed and endanger people’s lives and get away with it.” Agnes was very fired up. “Fred tends to slow down just to annoy them and I don’t blame him. I feel like doing that when I am

alone but I’m too scared about road rage. I don’t want to be attacked that’s for sure. What a cranky world we live in Merle.” I don’t think I have ever seen Agnes so annoyed about anything before. She is normally so placid but I certainly agreed with her. “Well,” I continued once Agnes had calmed down, “I was being tailgated as you say, and this car felt like it was inches away from me. I got upset and a little nervous and panicky so as I came over the causeway I decided to move into the left lane and let this dangerously hovering car go past me.” “Oh, I really feel for you Merle,” Agnes piped in again. “Such a scary predicament to be in.” “It was,” I agreed. “So, I quickly indicated and moved over to the left, but unfortunately I hadn’t seen the car in my blind spot and clipped the front corner of it.” “Oh dear Merle, that must have been terrifying,” Agnes said. She was clearly very invested in this story. “I am only glad that the car slammed on its brakes when they saw me moving over. I felt the impact and slammed on my brakes too. Oh, it was just awful.” I blinked away a small tear in my eye. Agnes looked sad and reached out to touch my arm. “Thank goodness you weren’t both killed.” “We were both so very lucky Agnes. We held up traffic for hours though. The police came and an ambulance. The lady in the car I hit was very angry with me for causing the accident. She kept yelling at me saying you old people this and you old people that, you could have killed me, you should have your licence taken off you and all sorts of other mean things, while I was furious that the tailgater had just kept on driving. He didn’t even check to see if we were okay, and it was all his fault.” “That is just so unfair Merle,” said Agnes. “I can’t believe you only came away with minor injuries. Oh, I am so upset for you.” I looked at Agnes grimly. “Both of us were very lucky but the lady did say she would see me in court, so now I am worried about that. What if they take my licence off me Agnes.?” I started to cry, unable to hold back any longer. Agnes looked upset and stroked my arm. “Please don’t cry Merle. They won’t take away your licence. You are a very safe drive normally and if you do lose your license then Fred and I can take you anywhere you need to go.” Now there were even more reasons I did not want to lose my licence. I decided that I’d better get very good representation. “Thank you, Agnes, you are a true friend,” I said as I patted her hand. Why are some people such road bullies and how do they get away with it? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

SEPARATED BUT NOT SEPARATE

Jillian's new friend

ECHIDNAS ON THE MOVE Around Tatura, echidnas have been spotted in curious places, waddling their spiky behinds into the hearts and photo galleries of many. From late May to early September they can be found looking for mates, which explains their sometimes, shocking arrival in local yards, nature strips and even sheds. One such occasion is the appearance of the creature outside the house of Jillian Chant. As she returned home from a quick shopping trip, she stumbled upon a prickly lump huddled up against her gate, burrowing into the dirt. Upon this unexpected discovery, she called wildlife services, as any good town member should, unsure what to do. As Jill luckily realised, there is a likely possibility the echidna she had discovered was a mother, to the adorably named echidna babies, puggles. This echidna may have a den of puggles somewhere around the area and for this reason, if you are to ever come across an echidna, it is important to call the wildlife services, as taking an echidna away may be taking away a parent from its children. It is advised to keep pets and small children away and remove anything that may be harmful so the echidna can move about freely. Jillian, and many others with similar stories, have been surprised and delighted to find these unusual animals in the heart of Tatura. We are lucky to have such amazing and odd native creatures here in our town. - Cassidy Chant

It’s now more than six months since our congregations started meeting via Zoom and Facebook in response to the restrictions on public meetings. You can say what you will about Facebook, or other forms of social media, but these platforms are what’s holding us together right now. And who would have thought we could do it? Let’s be frank, most of our people are in the ‘old dogs’ category and it can be hard picking up new tricks. But every week people in their eighties and nineties get on Zoom where we all can talk to each other, see each other, worship together, sing together, pray for each other, and have Church as we normally do. We’ve even managed to work out a way to have holy communion together! During an event such as the COVID-19 pandemic, it can be easy to be overwhelmed. People we know and love could/will/have succumbed to the virus. Fear and anger battle for supremacy of our attention as isolation increases. The news seems ever grim. In spite of this, we seek as a community to celebrate that God is truly everywhere, we hang on to Jesus’ promise that “where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” (Matt 18:20) Covid-19 has torn apart the fabric of our world. Our responses have shown us to be more creative, more resilient, more able to learn, and more capable of finding new ways to connect than we dreamed possible just a few short months ago. Old dogs have learned new tricks! It has also taught us that God continues to surprise us by breaking into our lives when we least expect him to. My point is, we are finding ways to support one another through this terrible time. We may be separated, but we are not separate. We may be solitary, but we are not alone. And one way or another, God is with us and we will find our way to the other side of this thing. Jesus said, “Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matt 28:20 This is the gospel, and it’s good news. - Brian Spencer, Minister, Tatura Uniting Church

Page 10 - TATURA AREA BULLETIN, September 2020

WORLD EVENTS

in October

October 1 – International Day of Older Persons. Ageism is the most socially normalised of any prejudice. The media portrays old people as senile and doddering on television, many employers discriminate based on age, and some doctors apply a more relaxed attitude towards screening an older person for preventable diseases. Older people who succumb to these attitudes live, on average, eight years less than those with more positive attitudes. My mother often told me, “You don’t stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing.” She lived to 94. October 2 – Name Your Car Day. Cars are a part of our life, every day and in every way. We name our children, our pets, and sometimes even our body parts, so why not name your car. Actually, a recent survey showed that 94% of us name our cars, which is entirely different to calling our car names when it won’t start in the morning. So, if you’re one of the 6% lacking in imagination, pop out to the garage right now and give your car a name, although preferably not ‘Herbie’ or ‘Herpe’ for that matter. October 5 – World Teacher’s Day. This day aims to raise awareness of the importance of the role played by teachers all over the world. The responsibility for educating future generations is a very important one and should not be taken lightly. The recent home-schooling forced upon many parents due to Covid-19 has certainly made many parents appreciate the role that teachers play in our society. However, if you don’t already understand the importance of education, then a promotional day won’t make any difference. October 7 – Random Acts of Poetry Day. A poet is a nightingale, who sits in darkness and sings to cheer its own solitude with sweet sounds.” – Percy Bysshe Shelley. As long as there has been language there has been poetry, taking the shadowed hearts of men and women and finding ways to twist the abstract feelings and experiences of perception into the rising and falling rhythms of the spoken or written word. The spiritual and emotional experiences of mankind cannot be written in simple phrases or plain sentences bound by the rules of grammar and sense. Such is the purpose of Random Acts of Poetry Day, to unleash the human voice within us and share it with the world. Here is an offering by that famous poet, Unknown called ‘Do You Carrot All for Me?’ Do you carrot all for me? My heart beets for you, With your turnip nose And your radish face, You are a peach. If we cantaloupe, Lettuce marry; Weed make a swell pear. October 8 – Universal Music Day. Music enriches our lives in so many ways. It connects with our soul and can lift us up when we are happy and comfort us when we are sad. Just hearing the opening chords to a wellknown song can evoke wistful memories and transport us back in time. By the way, I’m talking about music here, not hip hop or rap. October 9 – Curious Events Day. There are so many unsolved mysteries and curious events surrounding us on a daily basis and the purpose of this day is to encourage us to think about them rather than take them for granted. Here are a few examples to contemplate. Who actually does drink the last

of the milk and leave the empty container in the fridge? With all of his money, why did Donald Trump choose a hairpiece like that? Why does my cat always settle on my lap the moment I decide it’s time to get up? Why is a shop always frantically busy when I walk in and almost empty when I walk out? (and no, I don’t have a flatulence problem). October 10 – World Mental Health Day. There is still a stigma attached to mental health but the fact is, we all have mental health just as we have physical health. However, some people have problems with their mental health and need help in order to get better. Unfortunately, due to this stigma, many people who know they should be seeking help, refuse to do so. The purpose of mental health day is to reduce this stigma and encourage help seeking behaviour. October 11 – Face Your Fears Day. Take a moment to consider what your life might be like if you conquered some of your greatest fears. What would you do differently? One of my favourite sayings is this: ‘Action without contemplation leads to repetition, contemplation with action is meaningless.’ Face Your Fears Day gives you the chance to stand up to your fears, overcome them, and seize the day. October 17 – Mulligan Day. This is a day to give yourself, or someone else, a second chance. The term Mulligan originates from informal games of golf where someone has played a rubbish shot and is allowed to replay it. Usually, this is allowed once every nine holes. Whether it is a relationship with a friend or loved one, an old hobby that you abandoned or a past mistake that needs rectifying, you can give it another go on Mulligan Day. October 19 – Evaluate Your Life Day. At various times in our life, it makes sense to evaluate the progress we’ve made and the path we’re on. As we reflect, we may find that we don’t like where we are and want to make changes to move forward with our goals. Maybe we’re doing quite well and everything is moving along smoothly. However, most likely it will be somewhere in between. If we don’t take time to reflect and make changes, then we just tend to drift along, being blown in all directions by the opinions of others. Please refer back to my saying for Face Your Fears Day as it is also relevant here. October 29 – International Cat Day. Here we go again! Yet another Cat Day and the thing is, I can’t recall any Dog Days or Canary Days. Just who is in charge here? This day is to help stray cats find their forever home. Cats can lower your blood pressure, offer unconditional love (as long as you do what you’re told), companionship and many laughs. Perhaps you should stay off the internet if you don’t want to be overloaded with cuteness. As Charles Dickens said, “What greater gift than the love of a cat?” Actually, I can think of quite a few. October 30 – Create a Great Funeral Day. We all have to go at some stage but perhaps you’d like your funeral to be an occasion of celebration. No, not because you’re dead! It should be a celebration of the fact you were part of the lives of the significant people around you. Naturally, we miss family and friends when they depart this world and feel sad that they are no longer around to share our lives and this is fair enough. However, how more meaningful would your funeral be to everyone one involved, and this includes you, seeing as you’re the star of the show, if you had a hand in planning it beforehand? After all, it’s your funeral. - John Kriesfeld

A Time to Reflect

BLUE RIBBON DAY The Jelly Babies Basket

RODNEY CWA – JUNIOR BRANCH Rodney Junior Branch Co-ordinators Lyn, Shirley and Janice had been working on a special welcome back meeting for the Junior branch members, but as this wasn’t able to happen for quite a long while it was decided to take “we are missing all our Junior members” direct to them. Parents were contacted and it was organised to visit all the girls at home one Saturday (at the front door with correct social distancing) with the visit being kept a surprise from the girls. Eight homes were visited with 14 junior members in all. All the girls were able to choose a knitted Jelly Baby, made by members, to their liking with a note attached saying how much they were missed. The girls were all delighted by the visit and were also given the knitted headbands they had made at their last meeting before shutdown. The girls have been keeping themselves busy learning to crotchet and knit, cooking the evening meal in some cases, baking biscuits and slices and learning other new skills. One junior member had been cooking out of the Women’s Weekly CWA cookbook, her family and friends enjoying the ‘Whatever biscuits’ featured in the cookbook. - Janice Barrett, Publicity Officer

Blue Ribbon Day, to be held on September 29, will not have the usual gathering opportunity, yet as always it is a time to reflect on the 170 Victorian police who

have lost their lives serving the Victorian community. Also reflect on what serving members are prepared to sacrifice for community safety.

GOULBURN VALLEY TREE GROUP After a short hiatus from nursery work, we are back at it again preparing for a new crop of trees. Unfortunately, we are still having to manage our way through restrictions which have hit us with a bit of a curve ball. Our native seed suppliers are unable to gather seed in some of their usual sites due to the border restrictions. Some of our seeds come from Western Australia, South Australia and NSW with suppliers collecting seeds from multiple states. One supplier even telling us they will not supply seeds outside of Australia this year due to the shortage. We were quite surprised to find Lemon Scented Gum (Corymbia Citriodora) as one species in very short supply. Luckily for us and by pure coincidence, a local friend of

the nursey donated some of her own seeds so hopefully they germinate well. If not, my neighbours magnificent Lemon Scented Gum may have to lose the branch hanging over my fence. The Wattles (Acacia spp) are in full bloom at the moment. National wattle day was September 1, just as they are beginning to blossom. You might like to try a cut flower display. With some care, flowers will last a week. Some tips are, keep the cuttings cool, strip the lower leaves and recut the stem with one clean cut, clean the stem and place in fresh water with a preservative. Replacing the water regularly will help. - Good growing, Ash

“The people coughing, the people gasping for air - it was terrifying.” Sam was admitted to the COVID ward, struggling to breathe, to the sound of others around him coughing and gasping for air. One by one, he watched patients get taken into negative pressure rooms, sealed off by multiple doors, with no support network. As a healthcare worker who’s now recovering at home, Sam’s hope is that in this fight against coronavirus, we all understand that we are the front line. We all have a part to play by staying home to help stop the spread of the virus. If you have symptoms - please get tested. Payments of $450 are available to help you stay home and wait for your test result.

INDUSTRY LEGEND RETIRES After 40 years in the water industry, Peter Quinn, Managing Director of Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) since 2008, retired on August 31. Board Chairman, Mark Stone AM, said Peter has had a stellar career in the water industry; from his beginning in 1980 with the State Rivers and Water Commission to his appointment as Managing Director in 2008, he has continued to lead and inspire across GVW and the sector. “As Managing Director, Peter has steered GVW through significant challenges, including the 2009 Black Saturday fires,” Mr Stone said. “His leadership has also brought accolades to GVW as the first water authority awarded a PREMO rating for their 2018-23 Price Submission. This rating recognised Peter’s ongoing commitment to customers and his skills in organisational change.” Mr Quinn has sponsored breakthrough innovations in water treatment and wastewater recycling in his 24 years at GVW. He has also been a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion across the business, the sector and the region. Mr Quinn has been an active community leader: as a GOTAFE committee member, Goulburn Valley CEOs Leadership Group contributor and a driving force in the development of the new Shepparton Art Museum (SAM). Mr Stone believes that Mr Quinn’s leadership has put GVW in a strong position, setting the foundations for a new era, with a focus on enhancing value to customers and supporting healthy and prosperous regional communities.

See page 21 for answers

Peter Quinn “I would like to sincerely thank Peter for the service he has devoted to the water industry. The 2016 Barry E Leach Prestige Award, one of the industry’s highest accolade, is testimony to that exceptional service,” Mr Stone said. Mr Quinn has been succeeded as GVW’s Managing Director by Stephen Capewell, who began his new role on September 1. “Steve has a fantastic opportunity to lead the next phase of growth for GVW, in particular harnessing the digital opportunities in water management, and leading and adapting to the challenges of a changing climate,” Mr Stone said. - Jenna Bishop, Media Contact

DINKUM! Fair Dinkum! Are we the lucky country or not? In the 1960’s acclaimed author Donald Horne described Australia as the lucky country, but he did it very much tongue in cheek rather suggesting were we in fact the/a lucky country. Well since those days, the term has been used a fair bit, particularly by politicians and media journalists. However, I cannot help but see that we are indeed a lucky country and never more so than in the last twelve months. Now that may seem strange considering that we have had a drought many have said is the worst this country has seen, we have seen terrible bushfires ravage our country and leave untold misery as a result, and now we have the Corona Virus halting life as we once knew it. So how can we say we are a lucky country? Well, suddenly Ben rain with beganhistoFamily come when least expected and that has been followed up by some wonderful sustaining rain to fill dams, create sub-soil moisture so that crops can be sown. Even the once dead Darling River is flowing again! And the rain has put an end to possible continuing bushfires. Yet there is still so much misery so again, why are we a lucky country? Because we have men and women who have a spirit within them that makes us so proud of who we are. I am talking about the SES, Rural Fire Brigades…all of those who went day through night to help keep bushfires under control and who did so with some losing their own homes, and so many putting themselves in harm’s way. I am talking about the convoy truckies who day through night and drove countless kilometres to take hay bales to farmers really struggling. I am talking about the unsung, unseen heroes who went out of their way to drive to properties doing it tough with supplies of food and needed essentials. And now we have the virus and we are seeing Australians learn to turn their business into helping others. And now we are seeing health professionals and those who work daily in our hospitals putting themselves at risk because it is their job and the same can be said for those at airports, particularly those processing incoming passengers from overseas. We are seeing what friendship, mateship and dedication is all about on a grand scale. Yes, we are a lucky country in the true sense. Finally let’s all still remember those who have gone in the drought, the bushfires and this virus. Surely remembering makes us want to ensure they are not forgotten by doing what we can to keep Australia the lucky country.

TATURA BOWLING CHAMPIONS FROM YESTERYEAR Phillip Pullar could well be considered the Tatura bowler with the most distinguished career at the Tatura Bowls Club. A district farmer with some ill health interfering with his bowls, he managed to win eighteen Club Championships and six Champion of Champions. He first won in 1922, but because of ill health his second was not until 1933. However, from 1943 to 1952 he won ten consecutive club championships. Dennis Smith transferred to Tatura from Hill Top Bowls Club with four Club Championships and two Goulburn Valley Champion of Champions and continued on with his wonderful bowling skills by taking out, between 1985 and 1995, three Club Championships along with the 1993 Goulburn Valley Champion of Champions and a Group 5 championship. His distinguished career, including multiple event titles, came to an end after a workplace injury brought his promising career to an end. Keith Warburton and Geoff Hicks, playing bowls in summer and football in winter commenced their careers about the same time. Warby between 1964 and 1972 won six Club Championships and four GV Champion of Champions. Geoff Hicks between 1975 and 1985 won four Club Championships including two GV Champion of Champions. They combined together to win the State Country pairs in 1971 and in 1972 and went on to defeat the Metropolitan Pairs to win the State title in 1972. In 1982/83 Keith Warburton and Geoff Hicks, with Jim Curtis and Cliff Johnson, won the State Fours. H. S. Davy, then proprietor of the Tatura Guardian newspaper, won seven championship titles from 1916 to 1925, passing away in 1927. Fred Volk a Tatura Primary School Principal, was also the well-credentialed press correspondent for the club and his meticulous records kept over nearly twentyfive years is a great record of the club's history. Fred Volk won three Club Championships and one GV Champion of Champions. Tom Flanagan and Phillip Pullar were the earliest to gain state selection but have since been joined by Keith Warburton, Dennis Smith and Peter Campbell. Betty Curtis has won the Ladies Club Championships eleven times including in 1991 the Goulburn Valley and Zone Singles Championship. Faye Attwood is a five-time Club Champion and in 2004 won a State Championship. Jessie Eva won five Club Championships from 2000 to 2006, a Junior Single State Championship and represented Victoria in State Matches. - John Crilly

Crime PREVENTION With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer

Phishing is a difficult word to say (well for me anyway), but what does it mean? Phishing is a technique used to gain personal information for the purpose of fraud and identity theft. Phishing attempts can take many different forms. A common type of phishing involves sending emails that appear to be communications from a bank or financial institution hoping to trick people into supplying their online access details. A phishing email might ask an online banking customer to follow a link in order to update personal bank account details or login details. The link often leads to a webpage that looks just like the real site, but is a copy created by the offenders to collect login details. Following the link might also download a program which captures his or her banking login details and sends their details to a third party. Afterwards, these webpages will generally return the victim to the legitimate website.

It is important to remember that credit card details or login details used to access finances and services online are valuable and can be misused by others. Reduce the risks of phishing by following these tips: • never provide personal details, including customer ID or passwords, in response to an email, even if it claims to be from your bank • only access your bank's internet banking login page by typing the address into your browser, do not click on a link from an email • be suspicious of any email from someone you do not know or trust • delete emails that you think are untrustworthy without opening them • be wary of emails that do not use your proper name, contain errors or use poor grammar • install and use anti-viral software, and keep it up to date

• install filtering software to stop spam email or use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that will filter spam for you • ensure security patches for your operating software are updated on a regular basis Reporting phishing If you receive an email asking for your bank account details, report it to; https://www. scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam You can also report it to the business that the scam is impersonating but be sure to use an email address or phone number that is not in the suspicious email. If you have supplied your account details after receiving one of these emails, you should immediately change your password and report it to your financial institution so they can freeze your account and make alternate arrangements for you. - Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer

AROUND TATURA

Minister for Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Mr Barry Rowe, announced that the Kyabram Research Institute would close and be amalgamated at the new Sustainable Development Institute at Tatura. The DARA offices at Cobram and Numurkah would also be amalgamated with Tatura. Member for Rodney, Mr Noel Maughan, said some Shepparton Department of Agriculture staff would also go to Tatura. ***** Murray and Anne Evans of Tatura celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary recently at Tuscany’s. They were accompanied by their nine children, six daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren. Murray, the retired Tatura postmaster, and Anne renewed their marriage vows at the Catholic Church in Tatura exactly 40 years after their wedding day. ***** An enthusiastic group of Toolamba farmers is doing its best to manage salinity and drainage problems in the area. The North MurchisonToolamba Drainage Group is at the survey and design stage for a proposed community drain that will drain 2200 hectares of valuable dairying and orchard farmland into the Toolamba Depression. ***** Bronwen and Sam Lolicato from Tatura have named their second child Christopher Colin. Christopher was born on August 27 and is a brother for Timothy. ***** Northern Victoria’s fresh market tomato growers voted to form an association in an historic meeting at Tatura. Cobram grower Murray Ferrari was elected president, Joe Vraca and Rocky Scarpari were elected joint vice-presidents, Tony Mercuri was elected secretary and Pat Scrimizzi treasurer. ***** Champion golfer Jan Dunlop is Waranga Shire’s newest councillor. Mrs Dunlop, of River Road Murchison, said she stood because she was approached and asked if she was interested in becoming a councillor. ***** Jack Muir has begun to enjoy retirement on his Tatura hobby farm after 40 years service with the Rural Water Commission. Symbolic of his many years with RWC was the presentation of silver coloured water wheel mounted on a wooden base. ***** Tatura Table Tennis Association has a new club champion. Trevor Robinson turned on some great attacking table tennis to defeat Brian Towner who had won the title the past four years. ***** Magnificent Merrigum Football Club powered into the 90’s with an emphatic win over Avenel, winning 15.19 109 points to 12.11 83 points. The Merrigum team had too much talent and commitment for their rivals who tried their hearts out to the painful finish. Seven players were reported during the fiery grand final. The Merrigum reserves also won their premiership, defeating Lancaster by a goal after trailing for most of the day.

DANGER! VICIOUS LIONS Helen and I got married on a boat on the majestic Zambezi River in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The day before our wedding, together with family and friends, we went on one of these risky tours, walking with lions (accompanied by tour guides with rifles of course!). We signed some indemnity forms before setting off on our adventure. The indemnity forms read something along the lines of, “Young lion cubs are wild animals and at times scratch and bite. Entrance is solely at own risk.” Previously we had watched lions in the wild on a safari drive in the comfort and safety of a tour company vehicle but walking with lions was totally different and nerve-racking. The orphaned 18-month-old cubs we walked with were on a rehabilitation program to be released into the wild. It was a wonderful experience to be so close and to watch the cubs happily play with one another. Many years later, the memories from that day are unforgettable. As beautiful as these cubs were, when they are fully grown, they become fierce predators in the wild. Lions have an incredible sense of hearing meaning that, whilst obscured by dense vegetation, they are able to stalk their prey before attacking. Lions are not as fast as most of their prey so they rely heavily on the element of surprise when hunting. The surprise attack causes the prey to panic and disperse, revealing the weaker or slower individual within the herd. Lions hunt together and are able to exhaust and kill their prey by working together. It is their natural instinct and a fascinating survival skill to watch at play. The hunt involves the males approaching the unsuspecting prey upwind with the intention of driving the prey towards lionesses hiding in the bush downwind. They will attempt to get to within few metres of their prey before charging. In a successful hunt, the prey is knocked off balance, dragged down and killed with a bite to the back of the neck or the throat. It can be stressful to watch a kill due to the ferocity, blood and violence. Despite this ferocity, lions concede easily – they don’t like a long chase as they are often not as fast as their prey and will not pursue them very far if the first attack fails. The Bible tells us clearly in 1 Peter 5:8-9, “Be alert and of sober mind. your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” Satan might not literally lurk in the long grass to strike us with the suddenness of a lion. But be assured, there is clear and present danger. God is warning us in his word to be alert and to be sober. Satan intends to harm God’s children— he looks for someone to devour. He singles you out just like a real lion in the jungle does. Away from the rest of the flock, weak, defenceless and vulnerable, he attacks. Sin takes root. Discouragement, anxiety, depression and all sorts of agonies associated with loneliness can overwhelm you. All these issues can lead you to really dark places. Satan tactfully attacks isolated Christians, like a lion, with all sorts of discouragements. However, we need not be overcome with fear because we worship a loving God who created us, protects us and laid down in his life for us. We are God’s flock and the Good Shepherd knows us intimately - “Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalm 100:3); “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - just as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay down my life for the sheep.” (John 14-15). Please do not do life on your own in isolation. We need each other. The church building might be closed but there are ways of staying in touch and in fellowship with one another - phone calls and video calls; even taking a walk with one other person (wearing masks of course). Church is God’s means of protection to help us hold fast to the very end. It is the body of Christ, where Jesus is the head. He is the vine and we are the branches. There is no branch with life on its own. There is not part of the body that is self-sustaining. All parts need to work together and stick together. 1 Thessalonians chapter 5 has great instructions for believers living through difficult times. · Let’s stay in fellowship. · Let’s stay within flock. · Let’s stay connected. · Let’s encourage the disheartened · Let’s help the weak · Let’s be patient with everyone · Let’s remember His deep love for us through his sacrificial death on the cross. · Let’s be watchful, praying for each other and praying for God’s grace during this period. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). - Rev. Simba Musvamhiri

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS The Covid-19 restrictions have certainly changed the way the Community House operates. Usually we are trying to attract people into the house, but these last six months we have had to be innovative and creative in finding ways to connect with people in different ways. Working from home and on site, whilst closed to the public, we have some wonderful projects underway and in the planning pipeline. We are excited about the new library and new shared foyer which is looking fabulous! IS IT A CROW OR A RAVEN? There has been ongoing, and sometimes heated discussion, about whether the large black birds commonly seen around Tatura are ravens or crows. Hopefully, the following information will resolve this issue once and for all, and allow heated tempers to cool. Ravens are larger than crows and therefore are longer, weigh more and have a greater wingspan. When in flight their necks appear longer than that of a crow. The bill of a raven is also larger. Crows tend to fluff their feathers into a mane and when a raven fluffs up its breast feathers, it looks ragged. The tails are also prominently different and this can be seen clearly when these birds are flying. Ravens have pointed wings and wedge-shaped tails but crows have blunt and splayed wings and fan-shaped tails. However, none of this really helps unless you happen to see a raven and a crow side by side, which doesn’t really happen very often and probably won’t happen at all around Tatura if we only have all ravens or all crows in our vicinity. Fortunately, there is a much easier way to resolve this vexing issue. The long feathers at the tip of a bird’s wings, the pinion feathers, prove conclusively whether the bird you are looking at is a raven or a crow. A raven has four pinion feathers and a crow has five pinion feathers. Therefore, the difference between a raven or a crow is simply a matter of a pinion. - John Kriesfeld

REGISTER YOUR BURN-OFF The Brigade receives a number of unnecessary calls to landowners burning off because they are not being registered on the system with Firecom dispatch. These occurrences are increasing and often result in several brigades responding and tying up emergency volunteer resources. Please note that if you are within the town area you should check with Council first as they have Local Law controls on lighting fires in residential areas. - Bill Stockdale, Secretary, Tatura Fire Brigade

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Poor Karen has been getting a great deal of bad publicity lately and is being painted as a self-obsessed, entitled princess which is a bit hard on the actual Karen’s of this world. My next-door neighbour is Karen and she is a lovely, caring person so it’s unfair to label her as ‘a Karen’. The important point here is that you are only labelled when the word ‘a’ is used before your name. My name has been unfairly associated with men who have been arrested when consorting with ladies of the night, and called ‘a’ john or ‘the’ john. As in, “Where’s the john?” “He’s locked up in the cells.” This is not to be confused with the other detrimental usage of my name which is often used when referring to the toilet. My name has also been used when referring to unidentified bodies as in ‘John Doe’ although Jane has kept me company with this. John actually means ‘Blessed by God’ but you wouldn’t know it due to its other detrimental uses. There are many other names that have had various meanings attached to them, such as Charlie and Wally, which refers to somebody who is doing something stupid – “Don’t be a Charlie,” or “Don’t be a Wally.” Larry for some reason is always happy and Billy can be denoted as silly although that’s basically rhyming slang. Why Simon is simple is beyond me as the only Simon’s I have known have been quite clever. We can be Frank or Earnest and that’s a good thing although why those two names were chosen is also a mystery. I do have an issue with Peter not been chosen as a derogatory term. We have the well-known ‘Peter Principle’ which refers to somebody who has been promoted to their level of incompetence but rather than referring to these people as a ‘Peter’ when they stuff up, they are instead called a ‘Dick’ which seems unfair. Poor old Dick suffers abuse on several levels which I won’t go into here, although I will say that Willie is keeping him company. The film ‘Free Willie’ caused many of these gentlemen some concern for quite some time. Adding the letter ‘o’ to a name is usually used as a term of endearment or friendship and I don’t mind being called ‘Johnno’. The same can’t be said for my brother Les who gets strangely upset when I call him ‘Leso’. However, adding an ‘o’ can also increase the opportunity for derision such as ‘Whacko Jacko’. Jack also gets a run with the expression “He knows Jack,” and it is not referring to the fact that he knows somebody called Jack. Strangely enough, this expression actually means he doesn’t know Jack. And then we have Bob who apparently is everybody’s uncle. I actually did have an Uncle Bob and so when people said to me, “Bob’s your uncle,” I would answer, “Yes, how did you know?” which would confuse them slightly. If we agree with someone we would say, “Roger that,” and in order to add emphasis to a sentence we would include ‘by George’. “That was a great goal, by George!” although it wasn’t George who kicked it. There have been other word associations that I had hoped would take off but didn’t. When Charles married Lady Diana Spencer I was waiting for him to be crowned king so that it would be ‘The King and Di,’ but alas, it wasn’t to be. You may have noticed that the vast majority of names used here have been male, and therefore having Karen included has helped a little with the balance. Jane gets another mention as in, “She’s clearly a Plain Jane,” but once again, this person is not referred to as a ‘Jane’. “Not happy Jan,” is still occasionally used but nobody is referred to as a ‘Jan’ and therefore it doesn’t make the list. “It’s your money Ralph,” is in the same boat. We do have the expression ‘Nancy boy’ used to refer to somebody regarded as being slightly effeminate but that’s about it. I’m not sure how many parents are calling their babies Kath or Kim but the reason for that is on a different level entirely. I had hoped that somebody who was slightly mad would be called a ‘Claire’ as in ‘Clair de Lune’ but that association was always going to be a long stretch. For the slightly puzzled reader, ‘Clair de Lune’ is a French music composition and means ‘Light of the Moon’ and in the good old days, it was believed that people with mental health issues were affected by the moon, hence the term ‘lunatics’. I will save my take on surnames for another issue although I will finish by mentioning my maths teacher at high school who was called Mr Winterbottom, and he was indeed a cold, stern man. Actually, this reminds me of my grade four teacher Miss Turtle. She taught us well. - John Kriesfeld

gauntlet’ if you are game, for morning or evening joggers. But wait there’s more. One baby after a few weeks decided to go exploring…. right into our backyard. Baby No.2 decides to go investigating as well and mum, now crazy that her kids are missing, goes on a squark hunt. Having experienced plovers at their worst in Darwin I decide to keep well away and hope they can find their way through our back fence. At this point our white Maltese decides to investigate (clearly, he is blind!) and gets near enough to have mum decide on a dive-bombing run with appropriate squarks. Unfazed Muffin (the dog) barks…. bad mistake Muffin! Mum said, you want to play games then cop this and gets within his whisker of hitting him.

I escaped Forbes in NSW to get away from swooping magpies and now I have come to a place with swooping plovers! I do not have a love affair with magpies. When I was a wee lad going to primary school in Cheltenham, one of the black and whites swooped me, but I made the classroom, I thought, in the nick of time. Not so said the teacher exclaiming, “Dennis you have blood on your head, and you smell…. go home immediately!” Heartless is the only way to describe that teacher who sent me into swooping alley which was on my walk home. So, magpies and I are not friends! And now I moved to Northlinks, and right next door a plover decides to lay her eggs and whilst on the nest is protected by her mate who squarks like an air raid siren. Then she has her three babies almost on the footpath making it a ‘run the

Now Muffin unfazed becomes Muffin very much fazed and races for our alfresco. His brave master is waiting until the petulant plover decides she might just take out the human as well if she can get out of the alfresco without damage. The current sad state of affairs is they have now moved into Pyke Road but somehow know to come back our way just to have fun harassing the locals. We did the obvious and looked up Google which told us the parents will stay with their babies for up to three years! Now if I am correct, mum can have another nest before that three is up and we start all over again! Solution: Any plover lovers out there come and get ‘em. Second solution: Anyone who has head or neckwear which has a label ‘Plover protected’ please send to me. Finally, I know it was tongue in cheek but one lady across the road said if it didn’t stop, she was selling up. I am just going to grow cacti right through the back yard…. there will be no nesting here believe me!
