DO YOU FANCY A REPTILE AS A PET? Reptiles are becoming increasingly popular, with certain species of snakes and lizards able to be kept as pets by licence holders in Victoria. Various species of pythons as well as lizards, including bearded dragons, shinglebacks and blue tongues are occasionally brought into the Tatura Vet Clinic. Some interesting facts you may not know are: reptiles are ectothermic or cold blooded, and rely on external sources of heat to maintain their preferred body temperature. There is only a narrow temperature range for each species, where they are functioning at their optimum capacity. Reptiles hibernate during autumn and winter and should not be fed at this time. Energy is obtained by metabolising body fat reserves as they are unable to adequately digest food when hibernating. Incorrect husbandry is the major source of illness in captive reptiles. Problems can include being too cold, thermal burns from heat sources, incorrect humidity, difficulty in sloughing their skin, fungal or bacterial diseases, inappropriate substrates in their cage causing trauma, or dietary or UV light deficiencies. Bearded dragons are especially susceptible to metabolic bone disease (MBD) from inadequate UV light and calcium in their diets. Lizards with MBD are usually weak and stunted. They can have poor posture and mobility and even tremors. They can also develop fractures due to weakened bones. MBD can be treated if caught early enough but as always, prevention is better than cure. Prevention is by ensuring proper vivarium temperatures, adequate exposure to UV light, proper day-night cycles, a balanced diet of calcium and other nutrients as well as housing the reptile in an enclosure with enough space to hunt and climb. - Tatura Veterinary Clinic
