TATURA MUSEUM EXHIBITION GALLERY OPENING The opening of the new extension at the museum on September 15 was a great success due to the hours that the many hardworking volunteers spent over the previous weeks, reorganizing and adding to the displays to take advantage of the extra space. Nearly 150 people attended this event. President Evert Worm welcomed those attending and introduced the Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe, and special guests, Jana Wendt and Dr Seumas Spark. Secretary George Fergusson then spoke of the processes that had happened to culminate in the new building. He also acknowledged Mavis and Neil Grummitt who donated the funds for the recently installed Alcove Murals on the eastern outside wall of the Museum, depicting the history of Tatura. The Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe, spoke of

the benefits the larger museum will be to Tatura and, with the unveiling of the Plaque, declared the Exhibition Gallery duly opened. Dr. Seumas Spark gave a brief outline of the history of the late Ken Inglis who with Seumas, had co-authored the highly acclaimed book, ‘Dunera Lives’. He then introduced Jana Wendt, welcomed her and invited her to speak. Jana then told of her association with Erwin Fabian, before declaring the exhibition, “Migration and the Refugee: The Art of Erwin Fabian,” open. This Exhibition will be on display until November 3. Another highlight of the day was the release of the newly published book by Arthur and Lurline Knee titled, ‘The Nazi Camp’. A delightful afternoon tea was then served in the courtyard, thanks to Sue Mancini and her band of helpers.

OPENING OF THE TATURA AMBULANCE STATION Tatura’s first ever ambulance station opened recently. Situated in Casey Street the new ambulance station features training space for paramedics, a four-bay garage, kitchen, rest and recline areas, and secure parking for paramedics. The official opening was conducted by the Premier of Victoria, The Hon. Daniel Andrews and the Minister for Ambulance Services, The Hon. Jenny Mikakos. Also in attendance were our local member, Suzanna Sheed MP and the Mayor of Greater Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe. The station is staffed by two full time Paramedics in Ben Johansen and Jeremy Lia along with eleven volunteer Ambulance Community Officers, all of whom were present at the opening. Tatura is also Victoria’s first Heart Safe Community – an Ambulance Victoria and Heart Foundation initiative which aims to improve cardiac arrest survival rates by empowering the community to take action. Since the project began 18 months ago. 1,055 people – or about a quarter of the population – were trained in CPR and how to use a defibrillator. The number of registered automated external defibrillators in the community has grown from three to 26, including seven that are publicly accessible 24 hours a day. The Rotary Club of Tatura has been involved with the rollout of defibrillators around the town. They have been printing fridge magnets to advise of these locations and are keen to see the roll out of the new phone app that will instantly give the location of the nearest defibrillator based on the GPS location. LABOUR SHORTAGES SURVEY Greater Shepparton City Council, Moira Shire and Campaspe Shire are releasing a survey to ascertain the requirement in our region for a Designated Area Migrant Agreement (DAMA). The councils are keen to survey all businesses in the municipal regions to determine labour market shortages in the combined area. The aim of the survey is to obtain information as to what migrant programs are currently being utilised by businesses and why they may or may not be fulfilling their labour requirements. Greater Shepparton City Council Chief Executive Officer, Peter Harriott said this survey would form the basis for the potential for a Designated Area Migrant Agreement in our combined regions, should the need be demonstrated. A Designated Area Migrant Agreement sees a certain number of migrants able to work full time in our region for a certain period with the ability to apply for permanent residency after four years, at the earliest. “This enables them to establish themselves within our regions and become part of our community providing employees for roles previously unable to be filled long term by Australian Citizens,” Mr Harriott said. “Greater Shepparton has a long history of welcoming migrants from across the world which adds to the richness of our culture.” The survey provides information on key aspects of this potential agreement between our regions and the Federal Government such as minimum pay rates, skills requirements, English Language Testing and concessions for migrants. “This information will form the basis of a business case to the Federal Government, should the data indicate a Designated Area Migrant Agreement may suit the regions,” Mr Harriott said. Migrant programs form a small component of regional skills and employment and this program is about filling long term vacancies that have not been able to be filled by the usual means. Over the years similar migrant programs have proven to be beneficial to strengthening the local economy, and ensuring continued growth of business and industry in our regions. The survey is available from now until November 9. It can be found on Greater Shepparton City Council’s website. The survey can be completed by businesses within the three municipalities.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB On September 26, 36 members attended the monthly meeting of Tatura Probus. Brian O’Meara chaired the meeting and welcomed new members and guests. He was also privileged to induct one new member. Bill reported on the lunch at Colbinabbin hotel where 22 members attended and all agreed it’s worth another visit. Ursula continued her story from her years as a child in Bavaria. She has had some happy times in Australia but sadly they lost their home and a neighbour in the Marysville fires. Ursula has lived In Tatura for many years and is quite contented. In keeping with the Apollo 11 fifty-year anniversary, we were privileged to have Gillian Schoenborn as our guest speaker and she told us of her involvement at Honeysuckle Creek tracking station. Gillian joined the Navy as an 18-year-old and became a radio operator near Canberra. After working there for a few months, she heard about Honeysuckle Creek and after getting a job there, became involved with the space program. They worked ten to twelve-hour shifts. The mountain track up and down to the station was also quite rough, and if it wasn’t for their seat belts, it could have been disastrous. Prior to the actual flight there were many days of simulations. Her job was to send and receive messages from America, and pass them on to the appropriate departments. When the moon landing finally took place, Honeysuckle Creek had to be on alert as the astronauts decided to ascend without having a rest, and the telescope at Parks wasn’t as manoeuvrable so the first photos came from the Honeysuckle Creek tracking station. The station was dismantled after the Apollo 16 mission. Six sculptures remain commemorating the site. Gillian mentioned what a wonderful staff they had, with some brilliant minds amongst them. All the staff involved were presented with a coin made up of the components used in the moon landing. She recommended the book written by Andrew Tink for anybody interested in the mission which she said is a very interesting read. Australians should be proud of their contribution to the successful Apollo 11 flight. Trips: October 31 - Mica Grange gardens stopping at Maldon for lunch. - Edith Bradbury

WHAT IS ROTARY? John Kriesfeld and Tony Mason

ROTARY GUEST SPEAKER The president of the Tatura Bulletin, John Kriesfeld, was guest speaker at Tatura Rotary Club at their formal September meeting. John spoke on how the Bulletin has changed over the years. Some years ago, as a published author, he was invited to have an involvement on the Bulletin committee. Many of his suggestions for articles and items of interest were taken up and when Judy Diffy retired as committee president, John was asked if he would like to become president. He has seen many changes with the Bulletin as it has grown from a 24-page, all black and white publication in 2011 to the glossy 40-page, colour magazine we know today. A small band of very dedicated volunteers liaise with advertisers and collect and edit articles. Without regular contributors from the local community the Bulletin would not survive. The Bulletin has an excellent profile in the local region and is still going strong

after 35 years. John said that there are many community publications throughout Victoria but the Bulletin is one of the very few that is delivered free to each house. He noted that Tatura Milk Industries generously give the Bulletin an office space free of charge. John also thanked the Rotary Club for its work in the Tatura community over many years and its support for the Bulletin. The chairman for the evening, Tony Mason, presented John with a Rotary mug in appreciation of his talk. - Jo Burgess

MY INDIGENOUS ARTEFACT by John Kriesfeld

years. When my parents eventually decided to sell their house and move into a retirement village, I decided to rescue my rock from the now defunct fish tank and take it with me. I popped it into a plastic bag, dropped it into a drawer and thought no more about it. A couple of years ago I was cleaning out some of my drawers and I came across my old favourite and it was only then, upon closer inspection, that I realised the rock actually had been shaped by hand and that there were grooves at the top of the rock for your thumb and forefinger to grip it. The pointy end of the arrow shape could then be used for all sorts of activities that required a pointy end. I thought, “How fascinating. This is actually an aboriginal artefact that has lain dormant in a river for who knows how many thousands of years and I just happened to stumble across it by chance.” I was quite familiar with the wood working abilities of the early indigenous Australians but I hadn’t read very much about their use of tools manufactured from stone or rock. Early this year I decided it was time to part with my mysterious artefact and share it with the rest of the world. The last thing I wanted was to have it thrown out as rubbish after I had died. So, I drove down to the Melbourne Museum and was directed to the Indigenous Artefacts section. There were two scientificlooking types seated behind a desk chatting and drinking coffee and I proudly showed my artefact to them. Although I didn’t think there was a strong chance of being immediately hoisted up onto their shoulders and paraded triumphantly through the museum while people waved flags and blew trumpets, I did think that they would be greatly interested in my discovery, after all, this was a great opportunity for them to rewrite history and have important papers published in archaeological publications . I had already mentally written out the display card for the artefact which would have read, “This unique indigenous artefact is on permanent loan to

My Precious Rock Like many children of my generation, I liked to collect interesting things such as coins stamps and rocks. Whilst on holidays when I was about ten years old, I stumbled across a very interesting rock in the local river. It was completely different to any other rock that I had come across. It was a creamy white colour with a salmon coloured edge to it and it sparkled in the sun. It appeared to be a volcanic rock of some sort which I thought was a little strange as it was not a volcanic area. However, the thing that intrigued me the most was its arrow shape. It was around seven centimetres long and five centimetres wide at the top and to my young untutored eye, it appeared to have been shaped by hand. I brought it home with me from my holiday and dropped it in with all my other rocks and promptly forgot about it for a couple of years. One day my parents arrived home with a fish tank and decided that it would look good with a few rocks strewn about in it for the fish to swim around. The colourful arrow-shaped rock was my favourite so I chose that as one of the rocks from my collection with which to grace the fish tank and it then sat there for many more

the museum through the generosity of John Kriesfeld.” This was my opportunity for everlasting fame. Alas, it wasn’t to be. The scientific types couldn’t have cared less. In fact, they cared less than caring less. They barely glanced at my precious artefact before politely showing me to the door. I was both dumb-founded and annoyed. I came home and dropped it back into the drawer while I thought about what to do next. I have decided that if the Tatura Museum wants it, I will donate it to them and if they don’t, I will sell it on-line to a megarich overseas artefacts dealer for an outrageous sum of money. The museums will have had their chance. So, if you see my driving around in the near future in a flashy Lamborghini then you will know which option was taken up.

CUBBY NEWS Ellie and Amara’s story. I moved back to Tatura in June and connected with the Community House in July and enrolled my daughter, Amara in The Cubby Occasional Care. Since Amara has come to the Cubby House her social interaction skills have improved. She tells me about her day, tells me all about her friends and how much fun she has. While she is being safely looked after I have been able to return to casual work, enrol back into study, volunteer at the Community House and attend the SARA Financial Literacy Course. The Community House has really given me so much. The people have built my confidence and given me a place in the community to interact and give back. Tarja and the team in the Cubby have always made us feel welcome, which is a huge thing as it makes me feel secure when I leave Amara in care. The staff are always finding new fun things to do with the kids and I have noticed how much Amara has developed and come out of her shell. I recommend you drop into The Cubby and check it out. Term 4 bookings. The Cubby is part of the Tatura Community House and is located in the orange building beside the Children’s Centre (enter via Kerferd Street). We are a registered Child Care Subsidy provider licensed to care for a maximum of 15 children each day. The Cubby operates on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 9am-2pm. For enquiries phone 58 241 315.

The Old School Bell

50TH ANNIVERSARY FOR TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL I was so excited to hear from past teacher, Dawn Cooper and past student, Kerryn Alexander to ask how they could get involved in our 50-year celebrations in 2020. Dawn, Kerryn and I are keen to meet other interested people so we can start developing a plan for our celebrations. They are scheduled to take place on the last weekend in October 2020. Whether you’re a past or present student, parent or staff member, we want to hear from you. We invite you to join us for afternoon tea and share your ideas as we plan to make this a very special occasion. Come along, share some ideas, reminisce a little and have a chat in our new building on Service Street at 3pm on Monday, October 28. Out of this get-together we will form a working party to follow through on all the ideas that are contributed at the meeting. If you can’t join us on 28 October, please feel free to contact the office on 5824 1684 to register your interest. “Only 50 years old?” I hear you question. This celebration will signify 50 years on the present site at the corner of Service and Albert Streets. Four years later we will be celebrating the 150th year of the school that had its humble beginnings in 1874 in its original location where GMW is today! - Susanne Gill, Principal

A Shepparton East company must pay more than $10,000 in compensation and costs and will remain on an extended good behaviour bond after being found guilty of water theft in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court. The company, which runs irrigated cropping operations, entered a guilty plea on September 30 to taking water without authority after their allocation entitlement went into overuse by 85 megalitres – equivalent to about 35 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) brought the prosecution after repeated warnings and a formal caution for the company to correct its overuse of water, which took place in the 2017-18 season. Magistrate Stella Stuthbridge ordered the company to pay $9042 in compensation for the value of the water, $1038 for GMW’s costs and placed the defendant on a two-year good behaviour bond. At the time of the theft, water was valued at $106 per megalitre. Had the theft occurred at current value the compensation could have exceeded $50,000. “This is a timely reminder that water is a valuable commodity only available to entitlement holders with sufficient allocation,” General Manager Water Delivery Services Warren Blyth said. He said GMW had a staged process of alerting customers, warning them of any overuse and cautioning them against continued non-compliance before proceeding to legal action. “We have an obligation on behalf of all entitlement holders to ensure customers do the right thing and not enter into any overuse of water,” Mr Blyth said. “If customers persist in doing the wrong thing, we will take action.” Customers with any queries on compliance or overuse can contact our customer service staff on 1800 013 357. - Richard Bryce

The Tatura Community House AGM was held Monday 7th October. We welcomed our new Committee and said farewell to Mignon Campbell who has served on the committee for an amazing 18 years. Mignon has been a wonderful ambassador and Public Officer as well as a hardworking and reliable volunteer. John Kriesfeld also retired off the Board after four years of service, three as president. John’s steady leadership and voice of reason led the Community House into a new phase underpinned by the development of the 2018-2021 strategic plan. Welcome to the new committee which now comprises President-Jen Pagon; Vice President-Gaynor Lee; Secretary-Sue Moreton; Treasurer-Sally Sherman; Committee members- Bev Roberts, Jenny Stammers, Helen Benham The Seniors Trivia afternoon was held on Tuesday 8th of October as part of Seniors week. Everyone had a fantastic time whilst testing their general and local knowledge. Eight teams battled it out for the coveted Trivia Cup which this year was won by The Grinches, 2nd place was the Bad Arse Ladies+one, 3rd place was the Crafter’s Corner. The winning team had an import Roddy, who, for the second year has used his free travel from Melbourne and made it to Tatura to compete. Incidentally he was on the winning team last year! Big congratulations to the beautiful Thi My Hoa Le who recently received her Australian Citizenship in a ceremony at Eastbank in September. Thi My Hoa is a wonderful volunteer who had been attending English classes with John Kriesfeld for 2 years. She scored an astounding 100% on her citizenship test, testament to her hard work and John’s effective teaching style. Our Term 4 program is out now, so check it out. We have some Computer classes coming up as well as First Aid. If you are interested in leading a group or have an idea for some activities for next year, please give me a call. ATTENTION: MURCHISON BULLETIN READERS

We recently received comments from people in Murchison that they were not receiving the Tatura Bulletin on a regular basis. Upon investigation, we discovered that Murchison required an extra 200 Bulletins in order to deliver one to each house which would have increased the amount of Murchison Bulletins to 850. In order to cover the increased costs associated with this extra printing we would have needed to increase our advertising rates. As only two businesses in Murchison advertise through the Bulletin, we felt this would have been unfair to all of our other advertisers. Our solution, therefore, is to have five designated points in Murchison where interested readers can pick up a copy of the Bulletin each month. A side benefit to Murchison readers is the fact that people can pick up more than one copy if they want to send one to family or friends. This will also mean that houses that have no interest in reading the Bulletin will no longer be inconvenienced by the monthly delivery. The five pick-up locations are: 1. The Murchison Post Office 2. The Murchison Bakery. 3. The Murchison Milk Bar 4. Lindsay’s Jewels and Gifts 5. Murchison Community House. This policy will commence in January 2020 and we will monitor the situation closely to determine if we need to provide extra Bulletins to any of these locations. - John Kriesfeld, President

RODNEY CWA

Our October meeting attended by a big roll up of members. Before the meeting, our guest was Miranda Berry who introduced us to the world of decorating shortbread biscuits in Christmas shapes. It felt like we were back in the Art Room! Lots of fun. Then down to the election of office bearers for the coming year. Our December meeting will be our breakup at the Chinese Restaurant. A very successful year for our branch and we look forward to 2020 where I am sure that we will continue to be involved in the various aspects of C.W.A.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB The annual Naylor Shield bowls practise match against Mooroopna Golf was won by Tatura 94 shots to 89 in a closely fought out match. The shield was established by Kevin Naylor, a former Tatura bowler who relocated to play at Mooroopna Golf and who instigated the practise match in preparation for the upcoming bowls seasons. The shield commenced in 2009 and Tatura has dominated, winning it 7 times to 3. Mooroopna Golf was the venue this year and they provided a wonderful sausage sizzle and salads at the conclusion of the day’s play. In preparation for the commencement of pennant bowls, the Tatura Club, amongst its own members, compete in a competition using two bowls that they would normally use on a day of pennant play. Players compete in sectional play and then the section winners compete to see who is the champion for the day. The eventual winner receives recognition on the Jim Coombs Perpetual Shield. Jason Carter, Nick Tziros, Paul Hussey and Terry Gale won their sections and then in a knockout, Jason Carter fronted Nick Tziros in the championship final. Carter, who was in fine form and hadn’t dropped a game all day, defeated Tziros quite comfortably. - John Crilly

DINKUM! Sorry, I do not do autographs anymore. Yes, I’ll wager you never thought you would have a movie star in town but yes, I did have a part in that amazing Z rated movie, ‘The Vengeance of Fu Man Chu’. I was perhaps readied for it all when I joined the movie industry in Melbourne in about 1957 when I worked for United Artists, the then very big U.S. based maker of films. I had a job everyone would have wanted…I sat at a desk, licked stamps and adhered them to self-addressed envelopes that would go out to movie houses who took United Artists movies. If that was not bad enough, my secondary job was to take around the reels of movies on a trolley through the Melbourne traffic to those who had ordered films. Not surprisingly, I left disenchanted but then, about seven years later, I was in Hong Kong and given the chance to be a stunt man on ‘The Vengeance of Fu Man Chu’. My flatmate Terry Bourke was a film critic and he got the role of chief stuntman who in the movie gets thrown out of a bar. I was an English sailor stuntman who starts a fight that got Terry thrown out, hence the reason he wore cricket pads on his knees. I was accused at High School of over-acting and I could not help myself when it came time to start the fight. I picked up a fake bottle made of some material that seemed harmless until I decided to go a step further and break it to make it look realistic and once done, I shoved it into a Chinese sailor at the bar. Sadly, when it broke it left a jagged piece and when I connected with Wong Fong he began to bleed and then it was on for young and old as the director danced around shouting, “More, more,” little realising blood was streaming. The punchline is years later I took my mates to the Darwin Drive In to see me in action…. sadly, we were talking when I appeared for what seemed like a good ten seconds, so as I said at the beginning, no autograph! - Dennis Booth

SHEPPARTON ADVENTURE CLUB

Our most recent walk in September was to Mt Wombat in the Strathbogie Ranges. A group of ten walkers travelled to meet Justus at the Creekside park in Euroa. After a quick cuppa, we drove up the Strathbogie road until we came to the Mt Wombat road. From there we made our way along the dirt road to our starting point, driving slowly and enjoying the bush countryside of the Strathbogies. We had been advised to rug up because although the day was quite pleasant, the cold southerly breeze would be very chilly when we stood on the top of the mount. It was a bit of a steep climb up the access road, which warmed us up, but it wasn’t long before we were The Walking Group at the Pinniger Cairn standing at the very top where the fire lookout operates to provide an early warning of any fires breaking out in the region. It is very obvious why they selected that spot for the lookout, as we  Wills and Estates  Property and Conveyancing could see great distances in all directions. To the north we could see the towers on Mt Major. Further east, Mt Buffalo and the snow fields of Mt Buller.  Powers of Attorney both Enduring and  Notary Public From that vantage point we headed down in a northerly direction to walk an arc around the base of the peak. We walked through stands of tall trees, Medical  General Legal Advice over and between huge boulders, knee deep in undergrowth, under 5 metre tall tree ferns and we found beds of the most delicate, beautiful little orchids. Before returning to our cars we found one of the Pinniger Cairns which had been built by Thomas Pinniger as part of a geodetic survey of the colony in the late 1850s. The cairns in the Seymour- Alexandra area are the only evidence of the geodetic squares survey known to survive. With a very big thankyou to Justus, for once again leading us on a very interesting ramble in beautiful country, we adjourned to a most enjoyable coffee in Euroa. - Howard Hanna

AROUND TATURA

Tatura Milk Industries is booming with a record year’s trading over the past twelve months. Managing director Neil Lowe, said the record profit had been achieved in a year of strong competition in both the domestic and export markets. “It was a year when dairyfarmer shareholders were under operational pressures that saw increases in the cost of farm inputs and a high interest environment,” he said.

A proposal that Rodney Shire’s rates be increased by 20% to provide additional road funding will be considered at the council’s estimates meeting. Estimates meetings normally result in a rate increase in line with inflation. In recent years, Rodney and some other shires have been forced to include more of its own money for roadworks.

Rodney Shire Council is becoming involved in moves to save the Tatura Court House from Closure. Council decided to invite a representative of the Attorney-general’s Department to the next council meeting to discuss possible strategies.

A vacant block of land is causing a lot of excitement around Tatura at the moment. The land in Casey Street will be the site for the proposed Tatura and District Community Complex, designed to provide facilities suitable for far into the next century. The multi-purpose centre will solve the problem of overcrowded community facilities and expose people to a range of services in one area. ***** The Merrigum Friendship Club is celebrating 50 years of service to the community. Past and present members gathered for a pleasant afternoon tea at the Senior Citizens Rooms in Merrigum to celebrate the milestone recently. The Friendship Club is a charity organisation. Over the past 50 years it has given assistance to fund-raising activities of the Red Cross, local hospitals, the blind and others in need. ***** The Tatura Netball Club’s B Grade side defeated Seymour to win the 1989 GVL Netball flag. *****

***** Brendan Webster of Tatura had been saving hard to buy himself a new mountain bike when he entered a competition run by the Victorian Dairy Industry Authority and Big M. Brendan doesn’t like milk but when he saw the first prize in the competition was a mountain bike, he bought a carton of Big M milk and counted the number of times the letter M appeared on it. He made his sister drink the milk. Luck was on Brendan’s side and his was the first correct entry drawn from thousands across the state. ***** John Ryan has returned as coach of Tatura Football Club. The Bulldog’s board recently appointed Ryan as senior coach to replace Ken Murray who resigned at the end of the home and away season. What is a ‘Dad Joke’? It is a joke with very simplistic humour that causes the unwary recipient to roll their eyes in disbelief rather than burst out laughing, and dads always think they’re funny. Here then are some of the best ‘dad jokes’ going around. If you’re a new dad, it may pay to memorise some of these so you can use them once your child is old enough to roll their eyes at you. CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle

Once again, Agnes has talked me into doing something I was not at all interested in. However, as a result of my recent experience, I decided to be more open to her suggestions. We were having a nice cup of tea and a few cakes, when out of the blue Agnes said, in that annoying motherly tone she uses on me sometimes, like I am a small child who needs direction, “You can’t just sit at home all the time, Merle. You should think about giving something back to the community.” “I don’t sit at home doing nothing,” I replied indignantly. “I knit, I crochet, I make tiny baby clothes for the hospital to sell. I think I do plenty of community work, thank you very much Agnes.” I had hoped to end the discussion there but Agnes can be quite bossy at times. She put down her cup and looked at me seriously, “Well, there is nothing quite as rewarding as volunteering your time Merle. I really think you should come with me to where I volunteer on Thursdays, at least just try it out.” And this is how it all started. Out of the goodness of my heart, I agreed to go along with her. I still think I was seduced by cake and tea at the time. Agnes seems to know my weak moments and pounces on them. So, the very next Thursday, off I went to volunteer at the local group where Agnes helps out. I’d only been there a few moments when I couldn’t help but notice this rather robust lady, with a very loud voice who seemed to be in charge, as she was bossing everyone around, pointing fingers and barking out orders such as, “Put this here, put that there, no that’s not right, do I have to do everything myself?” She appeared to be a most unpleasant woman and I decided to dislike her immediately. I turned to

Agnes and said, “That very unpleasant woman over there, who is she?” “Oh, don’t worry about her,” Agnes replied with a sigh. “That’s just Gertrude and she likes things done her way.” “Well, what if I don’t want to do them her way?” I immediately shot back at Agnes. No unpleasant woman is going to tell me what to do, especially as I’m only volunteering. Agnes looked at me anxiously, “Really there should be no need to butt heads Merle. She just likes to tell everyone how to do things. I really would prefer that you don’t cause waves on your first day.” I was rather surprised by that comment. “Cause waves?” I replied. “I think you know me by now Agnes and that’s not who I am. I don’t cause waves and I don’t like being told what to do. Who does for that matter and who does she think she is anyway?” “Now let’s not get off on the wrong foot Merle,” replied Agnes placatingly. “Gertrude just comes across as grumpy and bossy. It’s not really who she is. She has been here a very long time, and I guess she has a sense of ownership. She puts a lot of time and effort in to this place.” I shook my head firmly. “I still don’t like it Agnes. She doesn’t own me and she’d better not tell me what to do.” Can you believe what happened next? I mean, you couldn’t make this up. This very aggressive, robust woman marched over to us and bellowed, “You two ladies don’t look very busy. Surely there is something you could be doing to help get all this done by lunch time.” If I was a cat, the hairs on my back would have immediately stood up. “Well, I beg your pardon,” I bristled. “Who put you in charge?” “Excuse me,” she said in a threatening voice

as she walked even closer, “and who are you anyway? I certainly have not seen you here before.” She sounded like that old dragon who taught me in grade five at school. “Well, what a rude woman,” I huffed. “I am Merle and my so-called friend has dragged me along to help out, but I am none too happy about that now. You certainly are a very rude woman you know.” “Well, you don’t sound very pleasant yourself for that matter, Melba.” This woman was being deliberately rude to me and I certainly wouldn’t stand for that. “Are your ears painted on?” I stopped and spoke slowly and clearly. “Merle. My name is Merle, and I believe your name is Geraldine.” She sniffed disdainfully, “Gertrude. My name is Gertrude.” It was at this time that I looked across at Agnes who was shaking her head as she slowly walked away and I heard her mutter, “Oh my, two peas in a pod.” I had no idea what she was talking about. “Come over here with me Merle!” Agnes then called out. “Help me carry all these bags out to the car please, I can’t do it all by myself.” I huffed off with very raised eyebrows, looking over my shoulder as I went. “What I rude woman,” I muttered loudly, rather hoping that Geraldine would hear me. The woman went off in the opposite direction and also muttered something but I could not quite catch it. “I cannot believe you would subject me to this,” I scolded Agnes once I caught up with her. Agnes simply smiled. “You should learn to look at the big picture Merle. That’s what I do. We are all helping the community and I just don’t worry about other people’s behaviour. As I’m sure you’ve noticed over the years, I am a very tolerant woman and people volunteer out of the goodness of their hearts to help the community, so we need to be a little more patient of our differences. Don’t you think?” “You know full well I am normally a very tolerant woman too,” I replied, “but some people just push my buttons.” I noticed that Agnes’s twitching had returned as she gave me a strange look. “Tolerant, you say Merle,” she said finally. “Hmm, tolerant, okay.” She twitched a little more and then said, “Let’s just get this stuff out to the car and then I can take you up the street so we can get you some nice lunch with perhaps a cake or two. How does that sound?” I noticed she was doing that mother tone with me again. I could hear it in her voice, treating me like I was a little child. Why would she think she needed her to use her mother tone with me? Has old age finally caught up with her? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

MURCHISON PRIMARY SCHOOL Raising Goals. Students at Murchison Primary School recently took part in a Colour Run, perhaps the name should have been ‘Colour Fun’! They had each collected money as part of our Term 2 fundraiser. Many students had goals of collecting a certain amount of money as they then got to choose an item from a range of prizes. It was held on the last day of Term 2 and the students met on the oval in their white clothes. As they did laps around the oval, teachers took great

delight in spraying the students with water. Perhaps more delight was taken by the parent helpers though, as they got to throw coloured powder at students as they passed through check points! Students ended up as walking rainbows, what a way to raise money for a new set of soccer goals for the school! A big thanks to all who donated money, helped out and watched the event. - Elly French

THE CREATION OF ENGLISH WORDS

Lindsay Bradley

HARSTON HAPPENINGS Vale - Lindsay Bradley On October 3, more than 180 people gathered at the Harston Hall to celebrate the life of Lindsay Bradley. Family and close friends paid tribute to the life and times of Lindsay, after which people were invited to join the family in a BBQ to socialise and reminisce. Lindsay and his wife Betty, shifted to Harston in 1957. They raised a family and were active members of the local community. During his life Lindsay served as President of the Harston Hall Committee, was involved with the Harston Primary School, the Harston Hall Youth Club as well as being a founding member of the Harston Drainage/Landcare Group. He was also an active member of the local Fire Brigade for many years. On the farm over the years, there was nothing he didn’t have a go at. In 1957 he set up a pig stud called Olinda Park with some Landrace pigs that Betty’s parents had imported from England and in 1959 he held the first auction in Australia at the Tatura Show Grounds of 124 Landrace large white pigs. In the 1970’s he was heavily involved in the setting up of a new body to promote ‘new fashion’ pork and the first Pig Fair held at the Bendigo Showgrounds which then became an annual event. During this time Lindsay entered Carcass competitions at the Royal Melbourne Show and proudly won Victorian Champion Bacon Carcass. Lindsay and Betty ran a successful dairying business known as Warrana Jersey Stud up until the 1970’s and then ran a few beef cattle for a number of years until the industry crashed, when they then moved into sheep. Lindsay dusted off his shearing skills and obtained his Wool Classing certificate. In the latter years the sheep made way for cropping. Lindsay was well respected by all those who were fortunate enough to know him and a valued community member who will be remembered with much love.

English is known as one of the richest languages in its choice of available words to describe almost any situation, and if we can’t find one then we’ll happily borrow one from another language and then claim it as our own. Our language has been evolving for almost two thousand years and the American philosopher and essayist, Ralph Waldo Emerson called it ‘the sea which receives tributaries from every region and under heaven’. The Celts, Jutes, Angles, Saxons, Greeks, Romans, Danes, Normans, Dutch, Germans, French, Spanish, Italians, Indians, Native Americans, Africans and Welsh have all made major contributions. Here are a few examples of Latin in our language. Affidavit – Latin, he has sworn. Now it is a statement of truth. Bona fide – Latin, in good faith. Crematorium – Where corpses are incinerated. Dictum – Latin, a saying. Now, a wise saying. Forum – A market place. Now, a discussion group. Impromptu – Latin, in readiness. Now, something spontaneous. Javelin – Latin, a dart. Limbo – Latin, the borderland of hell. Now, an intermediate state. Paraphernalia – Latin, the possessions of a wife over which her husband has no control. Now, bits and pieces. Rigor mortis – Latin, the stiffness of death. Status quo – Latin, the state in which. Now, the situation as it is. However, we haven’t just borrowed words from other languages in order to construct modern English. Many of our authors and playwrights invented their own words or used words that they’d heard and then slipped them into their manuscripts. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Geoffrey Chaucer (1340 – 1400), the author of Canterbury Tales, is credited with the first known use of 2,012 English words. Here is a selection of some of these words: agree, sperm, possibility, plumage, future, galaxy, praise, laxative, femininity, dismember, womanhood, funeral, misery, jolliness, village, princess, magician, twitter. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) is also credited with originating around 1,700 new words. Many of Shakespeare’s new words were created by using existing nouns as verbs, verbs as adjectives, reframing their original meanings, adding prefixes or suffixes and playing around with them to come up with something a little bit different. Here is a selection of some of Shakespeare’s words: addiction, assassination, advertising, amazement, bandit, barefaced, bedroom, bloodstained, birthplace, champion, blanket, dishearten, excitement, drugged, frugal, generous, gossip, laughable, lacklustre, madcap, mountaineer, outbreak, summit, worthless. Even current authors slip in the occasional creation that then becomes accepted as commonplace. The original ‘Nerd’ was a character in Dr Zeuss’s 1950 children’s book, If I Ran the Zoo. In the 1920’s in New Orleans, ‘muggle’ was slang for marijuana. J.K Rowling, in her Harry Potter books, has turned a ‘muggle’ into someone who lacks all magical powers. Now, hopefully you can temper your excitement but next month I will be looking at words in the English language that have either German or Dutch origins. My source for this article was Word Play by Gyles Brandreth. - John Kriesfeld

AVOCADO ON TATURA TRELLIS

The Tatura Trellis has continued to expand for 36 years as an efficient system of growing fruit for a wide range of temperate-zone, sub-topical and tropical fruits. Although we have to give Les Smolenski of Tauranga in New Zealand the credit of growing the first avocado trees on Tatura Trellis in 1981, it was not until recently that the ‘big players’ in Australia and South Africa discovered the benefits of producing avocados by planting the trees at high density on Open Tatura. The Tatura Trellis has evolved over the years as a result of more research and commercial experience, and the Open Tatura has become a more popular version of the Tatura Trellis. Mackays, the biggest banana growers in Australia (grow and pack 15,000 x 15 kg boxes per week, all year) are diversifying and have embarked on growing avocados on Open Tatura on two large properties near Bundaberg and Lakeland near Cooktown in Queensland. The company also grows (on Open Tatura) cocoa at Tully, and market their premium single origin dark chocolate as ‘Misty Mountain cocoa’. Fruit growers in South Africa have always been keen to adopt the Tatura system, and it is no wonder that they are also interested in growing avocados on Open Tatura. A recent visit to Mackays impressed them so much, that a large planting is being developed in the northern province of the country close to the border of Zimbabwe. Growing avocado trees on Open Tatura requires a complete change of mindset, because avocado trees are normally very large trees with 80 to 100 trees per hectare, and take many years to come into full production. In the Branchless Multi-leader Open Tatura, avocado management focusses on tree shape that allows a greater proportion of leaves to receive sufficient light to attain their maximum photosynthetic potential and regulate cropping for optimum production. The avocado is an evergreen tree and the stages of vegetative growth, flowering, fruit set and fruit growth are not so clearly distinguished, but a definite pattern exists. The avocado is notorious in having profuse flowering with less than 0.1% of these resulting in harvestable fruit. Another unwanted feature of avocado behavior is the tendency for alternate bearing with on and off years. Avocado trees are also very prone to Phytophthora root rot. With so many influencing variables, it is no wonder that the flower to fruit ratio is so low in avocados. But there are some steps that can be taken to ensure optimal flowering, pollination, fertilization and fruit set conditions.

The avocado flower has both female and male organs, making it structurally perfect or bisexual, which is not unusual. What is unusual is that the avocado male and female organs within a flower do not function at the same time. Each avocado flower is functionally unisexual with an unusual behavior known as synchronous protogynous dichogamy. There is nothing quite like it known in any other plant. Flowers bloom over several weeks depending on climate, and they open and close twice over a two-day period. Dichogamy indicates male and female organs are functional at different times. Protogymous indicates the female receptive parts become effective before male. Synchronous indicates that A timing is operative to fertilise B, and B to fertilise A. Avocado varieties are divided into A or B flowering varieties. For A-type flowering varieties, e.g. Hass, the flower will open in the morning for the first time (day 1) functioning in the female phase with only the female parts being receptive. The flower then closes after 2-6 hours and reopens in the afternoon of day 2 in the male phase, with the male flower parts now being functional and shedding pollen. The flower remains open and finally closes for the last time the next morning. Each opening stage only lasts about half a day. Under ideal conditions the overlap between male and female stages lead to cross-pollination, fertilization and fruit set between A and B types, with fruit then growing to maturity. It is nature’s way of encouraging cross-pollination between different varieties and ensuring species diversity. The growth pattern of a fruit-bearing unit of an avocado tree is periodic, with alternating periods of growth and rest. Buds are established during periods of rest. Because avocado trees do not have a dormant season, three two-year growth cycles occur simultaneously on the tree. An avocado tree is constantly balancing its resources in order to provide for those three growth cycles. Thus, what occurs in any one growth cycle can have repercussions on the other avocado growth cycles and therefore affect avocado crop size and quality. With so many influencing variables, it is a huge challenge that growers, who are using the Tatura system of growing fruit, are willing to accept. The global legacy of the Tatura Trellis continues to spread. Lately, we can add to the list of Tatura Trellis plantings being established in Japan, Okinawa, Hawaii, Florida, Uzbekistan and Reunion Island, located in the Indian Ocean. It took a decade of research to design and develop the foundation of a fully integrated system of orchard management that revolutionised the fruit industry in the Goulburn Valley and beyond, for which the word ‘Tatura’ is now synonymous. - Bas van den Ende

WORLD EVENTS

in November

November 1 – World Vegan Day. This is not a day to commemorate people from Venus although many vegans do sound as though they have come from a different planet. Vegans are vegetarians who do not consume dairy products or eggs as they do not like to see animals exploited. Most vegans will happily explain their way of life to anybody who is willing to listen or is trapped in a lift with them. Fortunately, vegans have yet to start ringing doorbells in an attempt to convert the rest of us. November 2 – International Men Make Dinner Day. Traditionally, it is the wife who makes dinner but now that both husbands and wives are working, it is time for the men to share the cooking responsibilities. After all, most of the greatest chefs are men. Please note: buying take away food doesn’t count, so come on guys, cooking one meal for the year won’t kill you, although it might kill everyone else. November 3 – International Cliché Day. Clichés are annoying due to their predictability and lack of any true meaning. So, a word to the wise, they should usually be avoided like the plague, but on World Cliché Day, you are encouraged to bend over backwards, bite the bullet and blow your own horn with your bottomless pit of tired old clichés. After that, they’re old hat. November 9 – Chaos Never Dies Day. There are a number of days dedicated to stress relief, calmness and taking it easy. There is a premise that we’re too busy, our lives are too chaotic and we need to step away from it for a while. The thing is, we’re busy all the time and nothing is ever simple or quiet! It’s called life. Chaos Never Dies Day takes the stance that the perfect, quiet moment we’re all striving for doesn’t exist and never will, so we should make most of now, chaos and all, and embrace the moment. If you’re trying to live in the future then you’re wishing your life away. November 11 – Remembrance Day (also called Poppy Day). This day was first observed at the end of the First World War to remember the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Hostilities formally ended at the 1lth hour of the 1lth day of the llth month in 1918. The red poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. November 12 – International Tongue Twisters Day. It’s either an elegant, triumphant dance or a fumbling, ungainly stumble through a linguistic waltz. Master any of the following tongue twisters and you’ll be able to amaze your friends and family. Remember, you have to say them quickly at least three times in a row: a. A quick witted cricket critic. b. The sixth sick sheikh’s sixth sheep’s sick. c. How can a clam cram in a clean cream can? d. Tie twine to three tree twigs. You have to hold your tongue out while saying this one: e: I was born on a pirate ship. That’s it, we’ll leave the pheasant plucking for another time. November 13 – World Kindness Day. It’s a little sad that we have to have a day to remember to be kind to each other. However, kindness is either in your nature or it’s not. So, for those selfish, mean and narcissistic people who require this day in order to show a little kindness, turn off your phone and acknowledge the fact that other people also exist in this world and that a little kindness towards them won’t cost you a thing. You might even enjoy the experience. November 14 – World Diabetes Day. This is all about raising the

awareness of diabetes and related causes. November 14 is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, a medical scientist who discovered insulin. Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. There is no cure and it cannot be prevented. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition in which the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin. Type 2 is associated with modifiable lifestyle risk factors. It can be managed with regular physical exercise, healthy eating and weight reduction. November 15 – Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. “Has another year gone by already?” I hear you asking yourself. If you are asking that question then it’s definitely time to pull on the rubber gloves, done the surgical mask and get cleaning. You may notice a sharp decrease in upset tummies once this is done.al. November 20 – World Children’s Day – Despite the obvious fact that every day is children’s day, the United Nations uses this day to encourage children of all races, creeds and religions to spend time together, getting to know each other and appreciating each other’s differences, and to prompt governments worldwide to pay more attention to the welfare of their youngest citizens. November 22 – World Hello Day – Participating in World Hello Day is quite simple: all you have to do is say hello to at least 10 people during the day. This is supposed to send a message of openness and goodwill to others, and apparently this small gesture alone will demonstrate how communication can be instrumental in resolving disputes and preventing conflicts. No doubt a think tank full of high fliers came up with this radical idea after spending many months jetting around the world and spending hundreds of thousands of tax-payer dollars. November 24 – Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day. We all have talent. Sometimes it’s obvious to the world, such as playing the violin in an orchestra or smashing a tennis ball at Wimbledon, but in many cases, it is a special talent that you keep hidden from the world, such as whistling through your nose, reciting the alphabet backwards while belching or knitting a jumper with your toes. Today is your opportunity to share your unique talent with the world. November 26 – International Cake Day. Cakes must have improved since the French peasants cut off Marie-Antoinette’s head for telling them to eat cake during a famine. Perhaps they were overly conscious about their weight. Anyway, you can put your own diet on hold today and indulge yourself with your favourite cake. Perhaps our bakeries will offer all their cakes for half-price today (hint, hint). November 29 – Square Dancing Day – Yeeha! Square Dancing has its roots in traditional English, Irish and Scottish folk dance and was first documented in 17th-century England. This is a great way to get fit, meet new people and have lots of fun. Each dance has a ‘caller’ to help you with the steps but unfortunately, they tend to speak a different language to the rest of us. November 30 – Computer Security Day. Cyber theft is a growing problem so please use this day to change your computer passwords and ensure that they are strong and never open any attachments from an unknown source, no matter how alluring they are. - John Kriesfeld

November GARDENING PLAN November sees the garden in full spring array. Trees have come into leaf, flowers are opening everywhere, summer vegies can be planted and there’s a special spring fragrance in the air. Garden growth is fresh and unspoilt – it’s still a bit early for pests or heat to have done much damage. If you have not already added mulch to your garden beds, it’s time to get to it now. Adding mulch will help keep soil moist and reduce weeds. Your soil structure will also improve as mulch rots. Try using Pea Straw, Sugar Cane Mulch or Lucerne. Soils are starting to warm up so it's a great time to plant seedlings, vegies, annuals and perennials for the garden beds. Haven't got a vegie patch? Well get cracking, there's nothing more rewarding than being able to pick your own fresh vegetables, herbs, strawberries. Yum!! Prepare a patch of soil, or if tight for space, a raised Instant Garden Bed is a fantastic compromise. Start by adding manures (Chicken or Cow) and compost. Mushroom compost is excellent to use with already existing soils or potting mix. Again, add an organic mulch to help keep moisture in and suppress weed growth and you’re ready to plant. Once Cymbidium Orchids have finished flowering, feed and re-pot, if necessary. Move to a shady spot to protect from the summer heat. You might need to tie up and support your Broad Bean plants as they become top heavy. Peas may also need supporting with stakes or trellis wire as the grow. When choosing tomatoes for the vegie patch, it is wise to select short and sturdy ones. Give each one half a handful of Sulphate of

Potash. This will help enhance flower bud development colour and crop production in your tomatoes. In addition to this it will increase stem strength and a resistance to pests, disease, frost and drought. Azalea Lace Bug and Aphids are a common pest this time of year for Azalea's. Rhododendron's and Roses. Use a Imidacloprid insecticide. Be vigilant as new growth attracts these pests. With a garden fork, gently loosen soil around trees and shrubs growing in lawns. Water deeply, fertilise and water again. A complete fertiliser is efficient or use Native Fertilisers if treating native trees and shrubs. Check your garden irrigation systems in preparation for summer. It's a good time to repair breakages, clear out blockages and replace any missing parts, before plants become dependent through the warmer months. Lawns can also be aerated now and fertilised with Lawn Fertiliser - Yates' Lawn Master, Scotts Lawn Builder to name a few. Any bare patches can also be re-sown. What to Plant Now Flowers: Begonia, Linaria, lobelia, petunia, Marigold, Impatients, snapdragons, Dianthus, Cosmos, Vincas, Erigeron, Salvia, Verbena, Portulaca and Alyssum Vegetables: Capsicum, Cucumber, Leek, Pumpkin, Radish, Sweet Corn, Tomato, Beans, Silver beet, Beetroot, Eggplant, Zucchini, Squash, Onions, Spring Onions, Carrots, Strawberries, Spinach, Lettuce, and Cabbage. Herbs: Thyme, Sweet Basil, Majoram, Curry Plant, Bay Leaf Tree, Rosemary, Oregano, Mint and Chocolate Mint, Parsley, Garlic, Sage, Dill and Chives. - Janine Francis, Viberts’ Nursery

EVEN MORE USELESS INFORMATION A working knowledge of useless information is be quite handy and can be used to astound workmates, friends and family. Many people tend to associate knowledge, no matter how useless, with intelligence so all you need to do is steer the conversation to the point where you can insert some of these useless gems and you will immediately appear to be more intelligent. Why does a snake stick out its tongue? Like all animals, snakes need to eat and they use their darting tongue to locate their next meal. A snake usually has to travel far and wide in order to find prey and it uses its tongue to gather particles in the air, which it then draws into its mouth. Scent glands in the mouth then interpret the smells much better than the reptile’s nostrils can do. The snake can literally taste and identify the type of animal that passed by within the last hour or two. Once it has identified its potential prey the snake continues to sample the air as it tracks the animal down. Did an apple really fall on Sir Isaac Newton’s head? The correct answer is ‘no’. However, it did play an important part in his discovery of the laws of gravitation. Isaac was sitting in his garden one night in 1665, trying to figure out why the moon circled the Earth. Why didn’t it come crashing down onto the Earth or simply drift away? From the corner of his eye, he saw an apple fall from a tree and wondered why did the apple fall down and not up? Did the Earth somehow cause the apple to fall? If that was the case, did the moon merely circle the Earth because it wasn’t close enough to fall? These thoughts set him on the right path, though he didn’t finish working out his laws of gravity until 1682. Do camels store water in their humps? Once again, the correct answer is ‘no’. The humps are used to store fat which then provides energy when the camel is deprived of food. Equally important, the hump absorbs the direct rays of the sun, cooling them down and protecting its vital organs. So, if camels don’t store water in their humps, how can they go for up to eight weeks without water? They do it by sweating and urinating very little. Waste water is absorbed into the camel’s body and recycled. The high water content of the camel’s blood also helps to keep the animal cool in extreme heat. Why do earthworms come out when it rains? Earthworms breathe through their skin and when it rains, the soil becomes muddy. If worms didn’t get out into the open air and away from the mud and water, which is why they often end up on the footpath, they would drown. When the soil dries sufficiently, the burrow back and continue to feed on roots and decaying vegetable matter. Worms often tunnel down 2 to 3 metres. Earthworms often leave the earth in the morning, when the sun hasn’t yet evaporated the moisture that collects in the soil. The only thing they need to worry about then is the arrival of the early bird. - John Kriesfeld

U.G.L.Y BARTENDER OF THE YEAR 11-year history, providing a significant 175,000 nights of accommodation for regional families. The event commenced as a state-based event and in 2019 moved to a national event for the first time. Mr Petch said this vital support takes away the financial and emotional burden of finding and paying for accommodation, allowing Australians living with blood cancer and their families to focus on the most important thing – getting well. It also means families can stay together, close to their loved one during treatment, for as long as they need. U.G.L.Y stands for Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You and this label really reflects the kind-hearted and giving natures of bartenders in our clubs, pubs and hotels, which are often the heartbeat of Australian communities,” Mr Petch said. The Leukaemia Foundation recently released a first-of-its-kind nationwide report titled The report details the true size, scale and impact of blood cancer and the lived experiences of people living with blood cancer in Australia today. Leukaemia Foundation CEO Bill Petch said the comprehensive and evidence-based report shows that blood cancer has been underestimated and underreported. It identifies that blood cancer is now more significant and prevalent than ever before and that diagnosis rates are on the rise across the country. The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national charity dedicated to helping more Australians survive blood cancer and live a better quality of life. Leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders are all types of blood cancer, which can develop in anyone, of any age, at any time. More than 110,000 Australians are living with blood cancer or related disorders, and the equivalent of one person every 41 minutes is diagnosed. Although research is improving survival, sadly 20 Australians lose their life to blood cancer every day, claiming more lives than breast cancer and melanoma. For more information please visit www.leukaemia.org.au

More than 800 bartenders across the country have come together to be ‘U.G.L.Y.’ for the Leukaemia Foundation's U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year awards. The extraordinary group of Aussies raised a massive $920,000 to pay for 11,500 nights of accommodation, essential for regional families affected by blood cancer who must travel far from home to receive life-saving treatment. The U.G.L.Y. (Understanding. Generous. Likeable. You!) Bartender of the Year awards see Australian bartenders compete in the heartwarming hospitality charity campaign which invites pubs, clubs and hotels across the nation to host fundraisers to help beat blood cancer. This year, Australia’s top 5 U.G.L.Y Bartenders are: 1. Jenny Lagozzino, Lagozzino’s Top Pub, Tatura, Victoria 2. Isabella Wyman, Glenmore Tavern, Rockhampton, Queensland 3. Keith Morris, Burleigh Heads Hotel, Burleigh Heads, Queensland 4. Debbie Weaver, Lawrence Tavern, Lawrence, New South Wales 5. Ailan Hickey, Diver’s Tavern, Broome, Western Australia Leukaemia Foundation CEO Bill Petch congratulated the Australian Top 5 and all the bartenders and venues who participated in this year’s event. “All of these generous bartenders and their communities have really helped to make a difference for Australians desperately needing accommodation to be closer to blood cancer treatment,” he said. “Unfortunately, most regional and rural Australians who are diagnosed with a blood cancer will have to leave their home, work and local community to relocate to a major city for their treatment. Funds raised by these amazing venues and their bartenders through this competition ensures these families have a safe home while undergoing life-saving treatment." The U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year competition is Australia’s largest hospitality charity fundraiser and has raised an incredible $14 million in its

OH DEAR...!

WHERE TO GET THE BULLETIN

A few years ago, I decided to visit my sister who was living in France and assumed that most French would speak English. I found that many only spoke their own language and this included the ticket inspector on the train. He punched my ticket, then chatted cordially for a bit, making several expansive gestures, so I simply nodded from time to time to show that I was interested. When he had gone, another tourist leaned forward and asked if I spoke French and when I admitted I didn't he said: "That explains why you didn't bat an eyelid when he told you that you were on the wrong train."

BOOK REVIEW Anybody Out There by Marian Keyes

Anna Walsh is officially a wreck. Physically broken and emotionally shattered, she lies on her parents’ sofa with only one thing in mind; getting back to New York. New York means her best friends, the most fabulous job in the world and, above all, it means her husband, Aiden. But nothing in Anna’s life is simple anymore. *Marian Keyes certainly has the gift of the gab. This was a great read, very funny as Irish humour often is. There are quite a few characters to keep up with and that the book was a bit long were my only faults with it, otherwise it was time well spent reading it. - Kerry Gardner

If you had picked answer (a) each time you would have least got three correct. 3-5. Bland Street. Well done! You are the person that everybody else measures themselves against. You are the rock in the ocean of knowledge. No, I don’t know what it means either but it sounds good. 6-7. Above Average (sort of). Well done on another abnormal performance. According to the Oxford dictionary, you are exceptional, irregular and deviating from type. Ask your friends if that sounds like you. 8-9. Smarty Pants. You’re among the best of the best although, unfortunately, you’re not the very best. You shouldn’t have changed your mind on that wrong answer. Always trust your initial instinct. 10. Genius. Words can’t express my admiration for your achievement. That’s it, there’s nothing more to say.
