The Official Magazine of Tattersall’s Club Brisbane

WELCOME TO THE TATTLER – WINTER 2019

FROM THE PRESIDENT At Tattersall’s Club, our future is as important as our past. The Club we enjoy today combines the best part of our historic building with an invaluable modern addition constructed in the 1990s. We enjoy this because previous leaders took the time to plan and execute well. Successful change at Tattersall’s Club has always been informed by a clear vision for the future. The Club Committee and staff are currently reviewing Member feedback and working on a Member-led Vision, Mission and Strategy that will deliver similar success. The investment the Club made in the 1990s delivered a Health Centre, Accommodation and the Healy Dining Room and other spaces. This forward thinking accurately identified Member’s changing needs and the Healy Room rapidly became our Member’s preferred dining option which they could share with family and friends. The gym and pool have now grown into a Health and Wellness Centre and the Accommodation is one of the main reasons our regional Members join. By listening to Members and focusing on the future, our leaders delivered a Club precinct that can accommodate any number of possibilities. The Committee of today has similarly found a Member-led approach to be the best way forward. In 2018, we ran the

largest consultation in Club history to allow Members to form a new Membership Model. This work included over 3,000 comments and clearly pointed towards a Family focussed approach. The Family Membership Model has reversed a ten-year decline and new Member numbers reached and surpassed the annual intake of 2018 in the first three months of 2019. A similar Member-led approach needs to be taken to the priority action areas of dining, dress codes and communication. Members want to come in more often and this means we need to consider how our Club precinct can adapt to deliver: • All day dining • Modern dress codes • Expanded operating hours • Contemporary communication and business needs. The size of our precinct means we can accommodate these changes and preserve our formality and heritage. But the right solution,

one that stands the test of time, requires wide consultation and wise consideration of the best use of our available resources. Our Club is a sanctuary in the CBD. We must preserve the valuable time ‘unplugged’ from the outside world while accommodating the business needs of Members for whom we are an ‘office away from home’. We are committed to preserving the quiet environment that makes us special by delivering designated spaces for work, dining, conversation and celebrations. I ask for your patience at this time. Anyone visiting the Club in recent months can see that we are busier than ever. The decisions we make this year must ensure the growing number of people who walk through our doors have an experience that reflects the Tattersall’s values and our Member’s needs. Your positive contribution to this process is invaluable. Whether you are a new Member or a fourth generation Member like me, your comments will shape our future. Please take the opportunity to send any relevant thoughts to us on: feedback@tattersallsclub.com Amicitia Vite Est Yours in friendship Stuart Fraser. President

Welcome to the Winter edition of the Tattler.

FROM THE CEO Is there anything better than good oldfashioned service? Staff going the extra mile to make your day easy, a friendly face when you’ve had a rough day, a great meal and the perfect wine – to me, this what we strive for at Tattersall’s. Club traditions of service and excellence are the two things we are striving hard to retain in everything we do. We are always looking at ways to improve our service, which is why I’m proud to announce that we’re planning on expanding our concierge services. Need to do some dry cleaning? No problem. Just leave it at the front desk. We’ll get it cleaned and ready to pick up the next time you’re at the Club. Want a special wine? No problem. We’re expanding out wine service back to the level it was three to four years ago. We’re working on having a more extensive selection of wines exclusively available to the Club. Straight

from the cellar door, these aren’t the type of wines you’d buy at Dan Murphy’s or BWS; they are tried, tested and simply the best.

resulted in a buzz, new smiling faces and a fantastic first quarter.

Need flowers for someone special? No problem. You tell us the details; we’ll do the ordering.

Club patronage is up, the restaurants are doing well; 2019 is our year. If you haven’t visited lately, I encourage you to come back and check out the new services on offer.

Work meetings or functions to organise? No problem. Give us the bare essentials or the relevant person in your organisation to talk to and our staff will do the rest. The best part is, you don’t even have to attend the function to know it will be a success.

Speaking of absenteeism, as many of you know, my second in charge Jonathon Caldwell has been quite ill. However, I’m pleased to inform you that he is making good progress towards recovery and we expect to see him back in the Club in mid to late June.

Tattersall’s Club is open to all types of functions, and as a Member, you can refer colleagues, family and friends with full confidence that your Club will welcome them with open arms, providing exceptional service and value for money.

David Bark, CEO

There is no doubt the Club has been through a tumultuous time over the last six to nine months. But the small changes and improvements we continue to make have

FEATURE: WINTER RACING CARNIVAL 2019

“This is the time when the eyes of the nation turn to Queensland.” Brendan Parnell, Racing Queensland CEO

2019 TAB QUEENSLAND WINTER RACING CARNIVAL With more than 60 black-type races, eight history rich Group 1 races and $18.5 million in prize money, the 2019 TAB Queensland Winter Racing Carnival is shaping up to be one of the best on record.

The Winter Racing Carnival started the first week in April and will culminate with the Tattersall’s Tiara Cup on Saturday 22 June, the total prize money for this year’s carnival has increased by $1.7 million, and racing has returned to the iconic Eagle Farm track. “There has been a real sense of anticipation and excitement ahead of the 2019 TAB Queensland Winter Racing Carnival,” Racing Queensland CEO Brendan Parnell said. “The beautiful thing about the carnival is that every year, a handful of horses arrive in Queensland as ‘good horses’ and leave as household names. Last year it was Autumn Sun and Santa Ana Lane who announced themselves as future champions.

upsetting Australian sprinting favourites to become the first Kiwi galloper to win the Doomben 10,000 since 1983. The Bostonian took home $480,000 of the total $800,000 in prize money for the race. Mr Parnell said the prize money for the race had increased by $100,000 since last year reflecting that the Group 1 race had become one of Australia’s top-10 races on ratings. He said the increases in prize money for other champion-making races, including two group 1 races and five group 2 races, would attract the country’s best horses and trainers back to Brisbane and ensure the standard of racing lifted across the board.

“Of course, Winx’s record-breaking run of Group 1 wins started during the 2015 Queensland carnival, and that’s something we are all so incredibly proud of.”

Mr Parnell said the return to Eagle Farm for the $1.5 million TAB Stradbroke Handicap (8 June) and the Tattersall’s Tiara Race Day would also help attract a strong field of interstate champions.

The first feature race of the season on 11 May provided a thrilling start to the carnival with New Zealand outsider, The Bostonian,

“There is something special about a race day at Eagle Farm,” he said. “The track is an icon not only in the racing industry but to all

Queenslanders. Jockeys and trainers have been unanimous in their praise for the new racing surface, which has given more trainers the confidence to bring their best horses to Queensland.” On addition to the new venue, the other major changes for the Tattersall’s Tiara Race Day include the Lazy Yak Tattersall’s Cup rising in distance to 3000m to make it a true staying test, and a prize money increase to $125,000 (plus $30,000 QTIS Bonus) for the highly successful TAB Battle of the Bush Final. “As it’s the last day of the Brisbane carnival, every race will be critically important. But the Group 1 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara will, as it is every year, be one of the highlights of the entire carnival,” Mr Parnell said. The Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara attracts one of the best fields of fillies and mares assembled every season in Australia. Traditionally the race is held at Eagle Farm over 1400m and attracts a capacity field of runners, a large portion of which are trained interstate. Last year’s winner Prompt Response trained by Gai Waterhouse, is nominated to return.

First run in 1989, the Tiara feature race was originally known as the Winter Stakes until 2011. The race became a Group 1 in 2007 when won by mare Nova Star and this year the total prize pool is $500,000, with the winner taking home $300,000. Part of the Tattersall’s Winter Race Day, the Tiara is just one of nine high profile races. The full schedule includes the Group 3 Lazy Yak Tattersall’s Cup, Group 3 Simon George & Sons WJ Healy Stakes, and the much-anticipated final of the TAB Battle of the Bush series.

female winners and $500 Wintergarden vouchers for the Runner Up. Tattersall’s Tiara Race Day is the jewel in the crown of Tattersall’s Racing Club which is celebrating 154 years of thoroughbred racing. The day will be supported by four days prerace activities, commencing with the Barrier Draw, Wednesday 19 June 2019, a luncheon at the Club on Thursday and an invitationonly pre-race drinks at the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) on Friday.

In honour of the Battle of the Bush series, Country Music Hall of Famer, James Blundell will be performing live at the track after the final race. Winter Racing Fashion will also be a highlight of the day with the Wintergarden Fashions on the Field returning with an all-new panel of judges and hosted by Miss World Australia, Tess Alexander. BRING THE FAMILY AND ENJOY A DAY AT THE RACES WITH LEGACY

Tattersall’s Tiara Race Day, 22 June 2019, also proudly supports Legacy by providing free entry for kids, rides and entertainment for the whole family within a dedicated family area. To help raise vital funds to support the Legacy families of veterans who have lost their lives or health due to their service, AG Designer Jeweller in the Tattersall’s Arcade has donated a $37,500 diamond and pearl tiara for a raffle which will be drawn on Tattersall’s Tiara Race Day. Even if you don’t attend the races, you can support Legacy by purchasing a raffle ticket to win this amazing Tiara. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased here: www.rafflelink.com. au/tiara-raffle all proceeds will go to Legacy. CEO of Legacy Queensland, Brendan Cox said the overall fundraising goal for the Tattersall’s and Legacy partnership was to fund a children’s camp run by the organisation in January each year.

“We bring about 60 children from families from all over Queensland to one camp location,” he said. “This youth camp focuses on joy, engagement and community support but there is also that element of, hey, we’re united here because of a unique circumstance in which one of our parents has given their health or their life in service of our country so let’s talk about that. “Legacy is all about preparing the children for life beyond the home front to the extent that Mum and Dad would have done had circumstances been different.” “So, the Tattersall’s engagement in raising funds to create that environment where these children can speak at that level is impactful beyond what words can even describe. And I can reassure you that the impact of this camp has an enduring effect beyond our three-year partnership agreement and into the lives of these children 10 and 15 years on.”

Mr Cox also encouraged Members of Tattersall’s to engage with Legacy beyond a charitable contribution and become Legatees for families. “The purpose of Legacy in engaging with and creating partnerships with organisations like Tattersall’s to create awareness as to what Legacy does in the community. “Legacy only lives through people from the community participating with service delivery. Primarily, that is through Legatees who are volunteers delivering our services into the living rooms of families.”

ANTICIPATION BUILDS FOR BATTLE OF THE BUSH FINAL With the majority of qualifiers completed and some of Queensland’s favourite horses in the mix, anticipation is building for the Battle of the Bush series final at the Tattersall’s Tiara Race Day. The final will bring together 16 finalists from eight regions across the state and give country participants a chance to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in Australian racing. “Everywhere you go, people want to stop and talk to me about this game-changing series,” Racing Queensland CEO Brendan Parnell said. “It is the talk of every country race track in the state, with trainers and owners trying to secure their position in the final and share in

the big prize money on offer. This year, RQ also introduced a $30,000 QTIS bonus for the winning horse if it is Queensland-bred and we have plans to make the race even greater in the years to come.” Mr Parnell said one of Queensland’s most popular horses, Fab’s Cowboy, had qualified for his second crack at the race. “His quietly spoken trainer Bevan ‘Billy’ Johnson is hoping this will be the year his bush champion can breakthrough and take home the big money on offer,” he said. “The TAB Battle of the Bush was applauded from the moment it was announced back in January 2018. Our TAB Battle of the Bush Ambassador, former champion trainer Peter Moody, is travelling to qualifiers across the state

and said he’s blown away by the support this series has received.” The qualifying series started in Gladstone on 20 April, and subsequent qualifiers were held on the 11 May at Gordonvale, Long Reach, Mt Isa, Warwick; 18 May at Burdekin, Warrego; 24 May at Cunnamulla; and 25 May at Thangool and Nanango. Four qualifiers were held on 1 June at Mareeba, Bowen, Cloncurry and Goondiwindi, with the sixteenth and final qualifier on the 8 June in Barcaldine. So far, every qualifier has attracted full fields stacked with quality bush horses, which will ensure this year’s final is a sight not to be missed.

ADVERTORIAL

We will be using the latest innovations and the most up-to-date drone technology which will enhance the coverage of the Brisbane Carnival...

MARK BONNICI – THE OUTSIDE MAN Mark BONNICI is the man behind Queensland’s Sky Racing outside broadcast team. His vision is simple to broadcast racing with state-of-the-art technology into people’s homes, clubs and pubs. With a wealth of television experience behind him, Mark joined Sky Racing in January 2012 to head up Queensland’s Sky Racing Outside Broadcast (OB) business.

He began his television career in 1986 in production which included filming and editing corporate videos, TV commercials and training videos throughout Australia and internationally. Mark expanded his OB expertise during World Expo ‘88 in Brisbane, working on a wide range of live broadcasts for Australian and international broadcasters. In 1997 Mark co-founded Cutting Edge Outside Broadcasts which covered live sports such as NRL, basketball, motor racing, AFL, netball, boxing, tennis, golf and of course, horse racing. Cutting Edge also helped broadcast the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and Brisbane Goodwill Games. Today, Mark and his team of 65+ full-time and casual broadcasters deliver racing broadcasts from Cairns down to the Gold Coast to Sky Racing’s national audience. That’s a huge job to manage over 400 race meetings just in Queensland alone, racing 363 days a year! “This isn’t a one-man job. I can’t do this alone and we have some of the best operators in the business alongside me,” Mark said.

By Jenny Mcalpine

“The days can be stressful and it’s hard work. Without each other’s support and the support of our families, we wouldn’t have the success we’ve had.”

In early 2017 Mark was handed the mandate to manage Sky Racing OB coverage for all major interstate carnivals, in addition to his Queensland duties. He also manages the many live production shows and industry related events that are broadcast from various racetracks and numerous locations during each racing carnival. Mark and his team are excited to deliver showcase coverage to racing fans across the country of the up-coming Queensland Winter Carnival on Sky Thoroughbred Central (Foxtel 528). “We will be using the latest innovations and the most up-to-date drone technology which will enhance the coverage of the Brisbane Carnival with overhead shots and other various camera angles,” Mark said. “It’s been a great ride with Sky. It’s constantly challenging and highly stressful covering live content but we have an excellent team, not only in Brisbane but across Australia who make it all happen, live, and on time.” When watching the colour and excitement of the big Brisbane races this Winter Carnival, including the Group 1 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara on June 22, spare a thought for the diligent Sky team behind what you see on your screen!

Tess Alexander, Fashions on the Field MC THIS YEAR YOU ARE THE MC FOR THE TATTERSALL’S TIARA RACE DAY, WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT THE EVENT? Race Days are truly unifying. The Tattersall’s Tiara Race Day really brings everyone together and celebrates the essence of Brisbane.

WHAT ARE SOME TRENDS YOU’LL BE LOOKING OUT FOR AT THIS YEAR’S TATTERSALL’S TIARA RACE DAY? Fashion on the Field is the perfect opportunity to express your personality through garments.

It’s a chance to blend this seasons trends, while really pushing your own personal style. I’ll be looking for cohesion from top to toe.

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO ACCESSORY FOR RACE DAY? It has to be a beautiful broad-brimmed hat. I love the structure and elegance of a boater and how they really ‘finish’ an outfit.

DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS OF WISDOM TO FUTURE FASHIONS ON THE FIELD CONTESTANTS AND HOW THEY CAN STAND OUT? Be yourself ! Have fun out there, you’ve

worked hard to put together an amazing outfit; showcase it! I always ask contestants what their intentions were behind their outfit... and it’s because the audience (and judges) are genuinely interested!

WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THE TATTERSALL’S TIARA RACE DAY? I love emceeing FOTF because every outfit has a story to tell and it’s my job to make sure it’s heard. From fascinators to accessories, hairstyle to garment... both men and women work tirelessly (sometimes for months) perfecting their fashions and I absolutely love helping that creative process blossom onstage.

Dale Olsen, Fashions on the Field Judge covered, I like to see interesting interpretations of current trends. This season we are seeing the return of animal print in either accessories or outfit, wool or velvet fabrics in rich jewel tones as purple, emerald green, mustard and royal blue.

DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR FUTURE FASHIONS ON THE FIELD CONTESTANTS AND HOW THEY CAN STAND OUT? Accessories are often where a fashion entrant can stand out from the crowd. An interesting clutch, a pretty pair of ankle boots, a vintage fur collar or cuffs and leather gloves can elevate a simple outfit to one of elegance. The hat, to me, is the most important addition to a racing ensemble. What I like to see most in Fashions on the Field however, is confidence and a big smile. We judges love to see you enjoying yourselves.

2

WHAT ARE SOME TRENDS YOU’LL BE LOOKING OUT FOR AT THIS YEAR’S TATTERSALL’S TIARA RACE DAY? I will be looking for ladylike fashion with knees and arms covered, wearing felt or leather headwear rather than straw. Once the basics are

TATTLER WINTER 2019

WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO YOU AS A FEATURE WRITER FOR LADIES IN RACING MAGAZINE AND A MEMBER OF THE BRISBANE RACING CLUB FASHION COMMITTEE?

I have been given the opportunity to explore my interests in journalism, fashion and racing, which include writing feature articles about prominent women in the racing industry for Ladies in Racing Magazine. Two of my subjects have been Patty Tighe, part owner of the wonder mare, Winx and Pam O’Neill, the first woman registered as a jockey in Australia. It has been such a pleasure to meet so many inspirational women through this medium.

WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THE TATTERSALL’S TIARA RACE DAY For sentimental reasons, Tattersall’s Winter Race Day has always been one of my favourite days in the racing calendar. I have entered the Fashions on the Field many times over the years and have twice won on the day and also received the runner-up prize. My first win was in 1997, when my husband Jim and I were newly married. The wonderful prize of a trip to Hawaii became our honeymoon. Five years later, in 2002, I won again. This time, Jim and I enjoyed a week in Hong Kong, a city I have always loved.

FEATURE: FASHIONS ON THE FIELD

Millicent Van Der Velde, Fashions on the Field Judge WHAT ARE SOME TRENDS YOU’LL BE LOOKING OUT FOR AT THIS YEAR’S TATTERSALL’S TIARA RACE DAY? There are a lot of interesting trends at the moment! For both women and men, green is really trending and that is going to continue into Spring. Various shades like sage, olive and mint have been strong on the catwalks overseas and that is filtering into our field fashions. For women, we’re also seeing influences from the 60s and the 80s featuring more and more. From the 80s we are getting trends like puffed sleeves, accentuated shoulders and even coloured tights for the more adventurous. From the 60s we are starting to see trends returning like shift dresses, pillbox hats, tweed and tuxedos for women.

DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR FUTURE FASHION ON THE FIELD CONTESTANTS AND HOW THEY CAN STAND OUT?

3

The most important advice is - act confidently and smile. If you look like you love what you are wearing, it will help project a positive image on stage and off. Also, my advice is to pick one element which is the feature of your outfit (such as your hat, your skirt, your tie, your colour scheme, etc.) and build your look around that. Keep it simple rather than try to do too much.

WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO YOU AS A RACING FASHION BLOGGER? ARE THERE ANY STAND OUT MOMENTS FOR YOU AS A FASHIONS ON THE FIELD CONTESTANT? The best opportunity I have had by participating in the fashion events at race days is meeting new people and making some wonderful friends from around Australia and New Zealand, who love both racing and fashion. No matter which racetrack I go to, there will be people there I know and it makes for an even more enjoyable day.

WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THE TATTERSALL’S TIARA RACE DAY The actual Tattersall’s Tiara Race is a great Group 1 event for fillies and mares, so you can expect some high-quality racing. But as well, the Tattersall’s Winter Carnival is a highlight because you can dress up, have a great day out with lots of activities and (unlike some of our southern states) the weather is usually quite reasonable too!

Derek Barlow, Owner of Tony Barlow Menswear WHAT MAKES TONY BARLOW SUCH A GREAT STORE TO SOURCE MEN’S RACING ATTIRE? I believe it’s our extensive range of options in suits, jackets and accessories at very affordable prices, that will ensure you stand out and look like a winner at the track.

WHAT IS A STATEMENT PIECE MEN SHOULD ADD TO THEIR SUITS AT A RACE DAY? A hat is always a standout at the races. Choose from a panama, trilby or fedora. Think Humphrey Bogart, you can never go wrong with timeless style.

By Kelly Macleod Photos courtesy of Wendell Teodoro, Dale Olsson, Millicent Van Der Velde & Derek Barlow

WHAT ARE SOME TRENDS YOU HAVE FORECASTED FOR THIS YEAR’S WINTER RACING FASHION? The Double-Breasted suit is making a comeback. A double breasted suit oozes confidence, style and is the epitome of power dressing. Go for a well-fitted, block colour and highlight with bright accessories.

GIVEN YOUR EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN MEN’S FASHION, WHAT IS YOUR BEST TIP FOR WHAT TO WEAR AT THE RACES? When going to the races... think...Carnival!! Color!! So be daring... Try to incorporate colours in accessories and ties...and pocket squares... stand out in the crowd. A well fitted, in trend suit, with a coordinated hat/ fedora is also impressive 1. GUEST SPORTS INTERVIEW

THE HIGHS ALANLOWS JONES AND OF AUSTRALIAN RUGBY WITH ALAN JONES At times political, often controversial and always pragmatic, the Evening with Alan Jones at the Tattersall’s Club in March was yet another sell-out success and well attended by our Rugby contingent.

By Megan Houston Photo courtesy of Graham Potter

TATTLER WINTER 2019

Jones is without a doubt one of the most influential personalities in the Australian media landscape; headlining Sydney’s most popular breakfast show on 2GB for more than 18 years and providing political commentary for Sky News and The Australian.

In 1984 Jones was elected the coach of the Wallabies (Australian Rugby Union Team). Under his leadership, the team won 102 matches including the famous Grand Slam victories over England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and the all-stars UK-France “Barbarian” side.

His rise to fame as a fast talking, controversial yet motivational political and social commentator, is synonymous with his success as the coach of one of Australia’s most revered sporting teams.

Two years later, Jones coached the Wallabies to their historic Bledisloe Cup victory; it was the first time such a victory had been achieved in 39 years and only the second team in rugby history to win a series against New Zealand on their home ground.

Raised on a farm in South-East Queensland, Jones started his career as a teacher and became involved in school sport; notably gaining success as a coach for Brisbane Grammar athletics, tennis, and rugby union. After more than ten years in school and amateur sport, in 1982 Jones was successful in applying for the position of part-time manager for the NSW Rugby Union Team.

Jones was awarded Member of the Order of Australia in 1988 for services to Rugby and upgraded to Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2004 for services to the community, not for profits, media and sports administration. During the evening at the Tattersall’s Club, renowned Rugby writer Jim Tucker quizzed

GUEST SPORTS INTERVIEW

I love the game, and I can’t stand by and see this kind of parade of incompetence...

Jones about his winning tenure as coach and the future of Australian Rugby. “I was lucky enough to come into Rugby writing in the early 1980s when Alan came on board to show the world what really can be done with fastidious preparation, getting the right minds and bodies on board… what it takes to beat the All Blacks at their own game,” he said. Jim recounted that Jones was aggrieved by the teams’ hotel accommodation during the 1986 Bledisloe Cup tour and, “gave one of his floral, flourishing speeches... offending the whole of New Zealand in about five minutes”. He kicked off the interview by asking Jones if the move was a tactical ploy. In typical Jones style, the response was a meandering monologue to reliving the highs and lows of the series. He told stories of long bus rides to nowhere, small beds and a hotel manager who claimed,

“no hotel would be big enough for Alan Jones’ mouth”. He spoke of campaigning to restore the Australian reputation via radio, inadvertently giving a New Zealand working class family tickets to the presidential suite, and convincing Grant Fox to provide him with inside intelligence on ground conditions. Jones said the intel proved critical to the win and, as he predicted, resulted in a restructure of the All Blacks which gave “Foxy” his first test appearance. During the tour, Jones said his mantra for the team was “we’ll be okay” but when asked if he would still use that phrase to describe Australian Rugby, he was scathing in his assessment. “In a word, hopeless. The administration of the game in this country is in disarray… in a corporate world they would be sacked,” Jones said. “The people in charge don’t know anything about the game, and as a result, the results are diabolical, the administration is appalling, and I write about this every Friday.

1. Mr Alan Jones 2. A sell-out success

“I love the game, and I can’t stand by and see this kind of parade of incompetence diminishing the game and making us laughing stocks,” he said. “I’d like to think we have a future, but there has to be a very significant change. There has been no evidence of that. How bad does it have to get before these people say, we’re going to give someone else a chance to do the job better than we are?” When asked if there was hope, Jones immodestly claimed he had the answers and that it wouldn’t be too challenging to turn the teams’ fortunes around. He said the simple solution was to sack the current administration, employ people who had history and knowledge in the game, conduct an open selection process for the coaching position and give the new coach free reign and a blank slate for choosing the team. “If we advertised there would be a stack of people who would want to do the job,” Jones said.

“That’s not the only problem, but of course the fish stinks from the head.”

“It wouldn’t be difficult to turn this around. When I say difficult; two weeks, three weeks?

Jones said the second problem was with the selection of coaches, the third, a new trend to play the ball on the ground and the fourth, a squandering of talent and general disregard of qualified opinion.

“One of the problems with Australian Rugby now is that it has gone so far, you’d have to get rid of a lot of these people to un-coach them. But there are plenty of people ready to step up and take their place.”

WHAT IS LULULEMON’S PURPOSE? The purpose of lululemon is to elevate the world by unleashing the full potential within every one of us. Our vision is to be an experiential brand that ignites a community of people living the sweatlife.

WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS AND SERVICES DOES LULULEMON PROVIDE? lululemon was born from a love of daily sweat, the desire to innovate technical athletic gear and to build communities empowering people to find their practice on and off the mat. We have technical apparel that will work for you, from yogis to runners, cross-trainers, beach goers and cyclists. We also offer the gift of yoga and other community classes to our guests at each and every store worldwide. If you work out in Brisbane’s CBD, chances are you’ve been in a class with someone from our lululemon team.

WHAT MAKES LULULEMON SO UNIQUE ACROSS THE SPORTING AND APPAREL INDUSTRY, PARTICULARLY IN THE EYES OF WOMEN? We have a unique, community led approach that starts in every store. We build authentic relationships with our guests and local

ambassadors to create a collective of people who are united in the choice of an active and mindful lifestyle. We do have a lot of inspiring women working for us and as ambassadors in our community. We love the fact that we can create a community that supports them in realising their vision and achieving their goals.

HOW WAS YOUR RECENT INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY EVENT HOSTED AT THE TATTERSALL’S CLUB? We hosted an event at Tattersall’s Club to celebrate local women in our community. We hand chose a variety of business owners, philanthropists, mothers and other community members to come together and celebrate women in the work of gender equality the other 364 days of the year. We had a beautiful brunch provided by Tattersall’s Club and we shared in conversation about the significance of female empowerment and how we bring this to life daily. What made the event even more special was having Genevieve Fraser address the group to discuss the significance of her being one of Tattersall’s Club’s first female Members. As the wife of the Club’s President, she also shared with us some context behind the female Member vote. Every woman left the event that day feeling inspired to continue the conversation of equality for each of us.

WHAT DOES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY MEAN TO LULULEMON? We empower women every day. Whether that includes elevating a community of people or creating experiences to excite our guests, we want everyone living their best life. Honouring International Women’s Day gives us the opportunity to raise awareness and highlight equality and inclusivity issues that we stand for, such as the gender pay gap that exists across the world.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL AND UPCOMING CHARITY EVENTS THAT SUPPORT THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN? We want to keep the conversation of #theother364 going throughout the year. We’ll be continuing to celebrate the men and women who are in the big and small work of gender equality every day. You can find these stories at lululemon.com.au

+ TATTERSALL’S CLUB AND MERCEDES-BENZ TOOWONG LANDSCAPE ART PRIZE Q and A with Art Prize Curator Bernie Hollett The Tattersall’s Club and MercedesBenz Toowong Landscape Art Prize is fast approaching, can you tell us more about the event and what to expect this year? This year celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Tattersall’s Club and Mercedes-Benz Toowong Landscape Art Prize, with 90 prominent Australian landscape artists represented in the exhibition. The Art Prize is now the feature of Art Week at Tattersall’s Club held the first week of September. Many social functions are organised for the week. The exhibition is then dismantled and taken to a public venue at Riverside Centre for a fortnight, during which members of the public can enjoy the display.

This year, Tattersall’s Club and Mercedes-Benz Toowong Landscape Art Prize celebrates its 30th anniversary. Can you tell us how the event has evolved over the years. In 1990 the first award was held for one week at the Club. There was no specific theme and the judging was held in the Grace Brothers Transport Depot. Gordon Shepherdson was the winner on that occasion with his work Leaving the Garden. In the second year, the Club decided to focus on the landscape for the national prize. Over the

last 29 years, there have been many prominent entrants such as Margaret Olley, John Perceval, Charles Blackman, John Coburn, Gloria Petyarre, Lin Onus and Queensland lumineries such as Irene Amos, Lawrence Daws, Ray Crook and the very popular Darcy Doyle and John Rigby. The prize has now evolved into a true national award, attracting artists from every state and territory. The award is an invitational prize and artists are selected on their artistic merit, consistent award winning exhibitions and private and public acquitisitons. The artists are usually mid career to senior artists.

Tattersall’s Club and MercedesBenz Toowong Landscape Art Prize continues to attract top Australian artists. Do you have any words of wisdom about the Landscape Art Prize and which artists to look out for this year? Buy what you would like to hang on your office or home walls and see every day and enjoy what you see. My caution would be don’t buy a painting because a colleague or friend has bought work by a certain artist unless you also enjoy the artist’s work. If you are collecting artwork by a particular artist, then try to choose work from each period in the artist’s career.. Abstract works are sometimes less obvious in their subject matter, but the clever use of colour, shape and composition completes a picture but means different things to different viewers. Modern works can be minimal and the viewer is left to explore the possibilities beyond the canvas or paper.

What kind of opportunities have been presented to you as an Art Curator and what do you forcast for the future of the Tattersall’s Club and MercedesBenz Toowong Landscape Art Prize? The first art exhibition I organised was in 1978. A small exhibition of local artists - a sell out! I realised how important it was for artists to bring their artwork to the market. I started my own art promotions business and have continued to promote artists for the last 40 plus years. I have had the opportunity to help artists in a small way to achieve a public profile, to increase their sales potential and grow their careers. That has been a very humbling experience for me and a huge honour. Tattersall’s Club and Mercedes-Benz Toowong Landscape Art Prize has been a wonderful experience for me, both professionally and personally. The Club has showed tremendous support of the visual arts by continuing its Art Prize to its 30th year. Many art awards do not enjoy this longevity and it has been a great honour that I have been able to assist the Club over the last 29 years to reach this year’s 30th milestone. Tattersall’s Club and Mercedes-Benz Toowong Landscape Art Prize is a national art competition, which is very popular with artists all over the country. The landscape theme is timeless, its interpretation endless. I see a great future for landscape art in its many forms, for it is the spirit of place, the connection to the land, ancient and new, spaces, places and people which inspires artists to paint the landscape.

+ MEMBER FOCUS DEREK BARLOW A worldly suit tailor and business mastermind The story behind one of Brisbane’s most well-known and established suit houses, Tony Barlow began with Tony and Derek and four friends leaving their hometown of Perth to experience life in London. From driving vintage blue Jaguars with the lads and selling cash registers to working as a suit tailor in Italy and experiencing life as an international model, Derek Barlow’s business defining adventure alongside his brother, Tony is unlike any other. Now 79, Derek reminisces on his breakthrough moment when he met Brioni’s co-founder, Mr Savini. He walked into Cecil Gee, where Derek was working at the time and after introducing himself in Italian, as Derek speaks it fluently, Mr Savini offered Derek a job in Rome. “I’ll always remember walking into Brioni’s flagship store in Via Barberini in Rome, 1971 to apply for the job his son-in-law offered me a year earlier”. It wasn’t a direct move to London that lead to the launch of a successful career in fashion and business venture for Derek who was working as a cash register salesman, while his brother Tony worked for the highly coveted ‘Cecil Gee’ clothing group. “We lived in an apartment in Chelsea and I used to have to cart these big, heavy cash registers into the shop while Tony would come home all dressed up, and whenever I got home I’d say ‘this is ridiculous’ and Tony would say ‘This is fantastic’. So, I walked into another Cecil Gee’s shop, said hello and got the job. Tony was in one shop and I was in another, and that’s how we started in fashion in London.” Leveraging this experience, Tony eventually moved back home to Perth where he pioneered

28

TATTLER WINTER 2019

the Tony Barlow brand while Derek continued to explore the world of fashion. “One of the more memorable moments in 1972 was a voyage on the Michelangelo, a first-class liner of that era. We travelled from Genoa to New York and held on-board fashion shows daily for all the passengers, who were mostly affluent Americans. Then there was Venice, Bangkok and Manila where we were invited guests on President Marcos and Imelda’s private island. It was quite an experience for me.” Derek was in constant communication with his brother Tony, who invited him to return home and join in on the Tony Barlow business. From there the stores grew exponentially between 1982 and 1989. Soon after, the pair realised that they had grown too big, too soon and had to sell their stores. Fortunately, Derek had the opportunity to buy the Queensland operation on his own and to this day, with the help of his daughter Georgia, ensures the store is aligned to their valueconscious ethos. “Tony still has his store in Perth, I have mine, and we still talk to each other every day. He’s happy and I’m happy.”

Q & A with Derek How long have you been a Member of the Club and what influenced your decision to join? My first involvement with Tattersall’s was in 1989 when I came to Brisbane with my family after I bought the Queensland Tony Barlow Menswear operation. I was the guest of Robert Gauld, a well-known fellow menswear retailer and long-time Club Member. He introduced me to a weekly poker game in the Club mezzanine level. I was part of that group for many years until it morphed into a weekly Snooker game, which is still active today. I became a full Tattersall’s Member in 2006, when Michael Cassidy, a passionate Tattersall’s Committee Member at that time, persuaded me to join.

Do you belong to any Interest Groups at Tattersall’s? If so, which one’s? I belong to the Snooker and Golf Interest Groups. I really enjoy both groups and participate in their Annual Championships (Having won 2 Golf Oscars and 2 Runnerups in the doubles Snooker comps with Michael Cassidy).

What is your favourite Club event? My favourite Club events would be the Melbourne Cup Calcutta and lunch and the Tattersall’s Club and Mercedes-Benz Toowong Black Tie Boxing evening. Both are really enjoyable and a great way to mingle with Members and guests. Derek is a proud Club Member and offers all Tattersall’s Members a “VIP” 10% discount on all purchases, including sale item, on their range of fine suits and clothing at their Brisbane store.

WEDDING NEWS

+REAL WEDDINGS MEET TATTERSALL’S WEDDING PLANNER How many weddings have you planned at Tattersall’s and have there been any stand out moments for you?

Lara Nicholls

I have currently organised a total of 57 weddings in just under the 3 years I have been working here at Tattersall’s. There have been so many that have stood out, one of my favourites was when the bridal party performed a choreographed dance for 15 minutes! It was amazing.

What makes a wedding at Tattersall’s so unique compared to other wedding venues?

I love when couples get creative and add their own unique flare to their special day.

I think the style and design alone is something you cannot find anywhere else in Brisbane. I love being able to share such a beautiful venue with our couples and their family and friends. We also have an incredible team of staff who are dedicated to providing exceptional service and ensure that your day is everything that you dreamed it could be.

What does the perfect wedding look like to you in terms of decoration and coordination? The perfect wedding for me is one that tells the story about the couple! I love when they get creative and add their own unique flare to their special day. Something as simple as a cake topper, centrepieces or even wedding favours. As for coordination, nothing is more perfect than running to schedule.

What is your best advice to brides and grooms who are feeling overwhelmed by all of the planning that a wedding involves? Create a timeline and checklist! It can be quite daunting with the amount of work that is put in front of the couple for planning a wedding. Having a checklist each month makes for an easier and more time efficient process. Oh and don’t forget to have fun!

What kind of services do you provide to couples who are choosing to get married at Tattersall’s Club? Some couples don’t need as much assistance as others however I can help with recommending wedding suppliers, putting schedules together, arranging menu tastings, creating floor plans and coordinating with our amazing Food & Beverage Team and Chefs.

How can couples interested in having their wedding at Tattersall’s get in touch with you to find out more? Any platform really! Whether it be a phone call, email, Facebook message or even an Instagram DM! I am always here to help. Contact Tattersall’s Weddings today. HEALTH AND WELLNESS

TIME TO RETHINK YOUR NUTRITION STRATEGY? What you eat plays a massive role in the results you get from your training.

your own tastes. After your workout, the caloric burn continues throughout the day.

Remember that old adage – fuel in, fuel out. Well, yes but now that you’re serious about your fitness goals, you need to make sure you talk with your Personal Trainer about which diet plan best suits your health and weight loss needs.

METAFIT (HIIT) runs 4 times a week on our current Tattersall’s Health and Wellness Centre Group Fitness timetable.

If you have any specific dietary needs or chronic illness, you may need to see a Nutritionist or Dietician to get your diet tailored specifically to your individual needs.

BE ACTIVE EVERY DAY! Cardio exercise is needed for heart health and weight training is required to keep your muscles and bones strong and healthy. A combination of both types of training should be used in your weekly fitness regime, as well as incorporating incidental exercise where you can, such as walking up and down the stairs instead of using lifts. If you are trying to lose weight, consider a highintensity interval training (HIIT) workout. HIIT allows you to achieve the benefits of traditional endurance training in a fraction of a time and the best part is you can tailor the workouts to

LACKING MOTIVATION? This is where some of us fall down in our attempts to get fit, healthy and happy. If you need that extra push, the accountability and the freedom to leave the planning to someone else, then a Personal Trainer is the right investment for you. Often overlooked and undervalued, the right trainer can make the right difference in your life.

RECOVERY IS IMPORTANT TOO! Recovery is multifaceted and includes techniques and actions taken to maximize your body’s repair. These include hydration, nutrition, posture, heat, ice, stretching, self-myofascial release, stress management, compression, and time spent standing versus sitting versus lying down. Recovery also involves chemical and hormonal balance, nervous system repair, mental state, and more. For most, the goal should not be set for perfection, but to prioritise life and maximise performance without personal sacrifice.

To book a Fitness Consult or to schedule Personal Training sessions, contact the Health and Wellness Centre on 07 3331 8877 or email healthcentre@tattersallsclub.com

4 TIPS FOR ADHERING TO YOUR FITNESS REGIME 1. Set yourself goals Setting yourself a health and fitness goal is great. Setting yourself a goal using the SMART principle is even better. Goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely increases the likelihood of achieving your goal. 2. Establish Routine Success does not come from perfection, it comes with consistency. Establishing a routine is crucial to being consistent. Scheduling in your diary set times to make it into the gym in addition to informing your friends, family and coworkers of your goals can help keep you on track and accountable to your fitness routine. 3. Hire a Fitness Professional Starting your health and fitness journey can be daunting but the trainers at the Health and Wellness Centre are here to help. Upon joining Tattersall’s Health and Wellness Centre you will receive a complimentary initial consult and personal training session. Our trainers will then design a program based on SMART goals and run the Member through their program with a free session. If, however, you find it hard to stay consistent and accountable, we have a range of affordable Personal Training options. 4. Give Group Fitness a Go Tattersall’s Health and Wellness Centre offers 20 different group classes for Members of all fitness levels. These classes are open to Tattersall’s Members, friends, family and work colleagues. Grab a timetable from reception, or find it on our website and chat to our trainers to find the perfect class for you.

+M EMBER FOCUS NATASHIA RADFORD What duties does a Race Day Judge perform at the track?

Did you have a mentor who taught you how to judge?

Everything from checking the horse’s saddlery (vital in a tight finish) to ensuring the jockeys are wearing the correct silks and changing any caps for similar/duplicate of colors. I also notify the race caller of any late changes.

In my earlier days while undertaking my NSW traineeship it was Jared Dorington and our own Josh Fleming (Qld’s chief race caller). Since moving to Melbourne & judging more regularly it’s under the guidance of Paul Eagen (Vic’s chief Judge). Due to my excellent mentors my skill set has improved tremendously.

I also need to learn all the horse’s names and jockey silks for every race and record the order and margins as the horses cross the line by sight as camera equipment does fail on occasion or you encounter hidden heads at the finish.

Do you have any prior duties to a Race Day and if so, what are they?

Additionally, in jumps racing, recording any falls or stumbles, which unfortunately can result in the eventual banning of that particular horse racing again.

My preparation for a race meeting starts days earlier, studying the guide, checking race nominations, scratching’s, jockey changes and preparing my judging sheets for the upcoming race day.

What has your racing career to date looked like?

What is it about horse racing that makes it such a big part of your life?

My career has taken me to the UK, France, Italy and Hong Kong. It’s been an interesting ride. I’ve experienced afternoon tea with the Governor- General, discussions about Winx’s next preparation at Kensington Palace (UK) with Debbie Kepitis, to judging at Australia’s oldest ongoing jumps race (Coleraine).

It’s a family affair! Both my father – Marcus Hamill (Tattersall’s Member) & Grandfather Terry Hamill (Tattersalls Member), had me reading the form guide at a young age.

A fairy tale to be honest. Racing Victoria have provided me with so much opportunity ranging from judging status country races to assisting at group metro races.

On the occasion when I am not judging, you can either find me riding my retired racehorse Boo or attending the races socially and following Fashions on the Field.

34

TATTLER WINTER 2019

Mixed with my love of riding horses; it was only natural that racing would always be part of my life.

How does it feel to be the first female Race-Day judge in Victoria? A great honour and I encourage my fellow sisters to get out there and pursue the career of your dreams. Hard work and determination does pay off, believe me!

What is it about Brisbane Tattersall’s Club that that made you want to join? A club with a steep history of horse racing and with the opening now to Female Members, I love that I can now be part of this Club with my family members.

With the number of events and activities happening at Tattersall’s Club throughout the year – which one are you most looking forward to? I would love to attend the Father Daughter Evening, as well as the Black Tie boxing event (to be honest I’ve never attended a boxing event, so I’m not sure what to expect!)

As an interstate Member what are your plans for utilising the Club? Attend the social events that I can when in Queensland, and enjoy the benefits of the reciprocal clubs, especially with an upcoming trip to Africa next week.

Do you have any tips for the upcoming Winter Racing Carnival? I fancy Matt Cumani Declares War, Princess Jenni and Etana.

THE FIRST LADY MEMBERS… NOT REALLY! By Michael O’Shea The Life Members Board in the Committee Room proudly diplays the names of 74 persons elected to Life Membership of the Club, commencing with ‘Buzi’ Bentley in 1888 and concluding (so far) with our most recent honouree Scott McAlpine in 2018. Notably amongst the 74 are two entries ‘A.Reeve 1917’ and ‘J.Batten 1934.’ Both were notable not only for their great achievements at the time, but more so for the fact that they were both women. Ada Reeve was born in London in 1874 into a showbiz family. From child prodigy, she rose to be the most outstanding musical and stage performer of her time, starring in gala West End productions such as ‘All Aboard’, ‘Babes in the Wood’ and her specialty pantomime ‘Aladdin’. Regaled throughout the world for her talent and charm, she was brought out to Australia by J.C. Williamson before Federation in 1897, on the first of four Australian tours. She played to packed houses and received rave reviews in all states. She warmly credited Australia with launching her long successful career. Ada’s second season in Australia was in 1914, at the time war was declared. On her return to Britain, she worked tirelessly for the Red Cross and dedicated herself to assisting the troops with a particular soft spot for the ANZAC forces. She turned over her house on the Isle of Wight for use as a military hospital and in 1915 she played a three week season in Cairo, entertaining Commonwealth troops prior to their embarcation to the Middle East. The ANZAC Buffet (AB) and Residential Club was a legendary institution in London, providing free meals and shelter for ANZAC troops on leave from the Front and some certainly recovering from ghastly war injuries. In 1917, Ada Reeve heard that the buffet was in imminent danger of closing due to lack of funds imposed by the British authorities. She embarked on an immediate campaign to raise money and save the ‘AB’ and she kicked off with a generous personal donation. Despite the danger of foreign travel she returned to Australia in April 1917 opening at the

Melbourne Tivoli. She then went on to play to packed houses in the Sydney and Brisbane Tivoli theatres in June, July and August. Fundraising was at all times her principle intent and in every centre she played she made a special effort to visit and entertain wounded returned soldiers in the various Military Hospitals. She became affectionately known amongst the troops as ‘ANZAC Ada.’ She regarded Gentlemens’ racing clubs as a special ‘soft touch’! For her money raising activities and for her great philanthropic work she was made an Honorary Life Member of The Victoria Club and Sydney Tattersall’s. Brisbane Tattersall’s Club quickly followed suit and she was elevated to the status of Honorary Life Member on 20 August 1917 whereupon President Justice James Blair presented her with a handsome gold medal described thus by the Daily Mail: ‘The medal’, which is a very handsome one, is emblematic of Queensland in the shape of a pineapple. On the top face of the medal are engraved the words.”Tattersall’s Club, Queensland,” and underneath is inscribed “Miss Ada Reeve elected Hon. Member. 20th August, 1917.” On the reverse side is the inscription “Presented by the Members of Tattersall’s Club in appreciation of her energy in obtaining funds in Australia for the ANZAC Club and Buffet, London.” Ada Reeve raised in excess of £14,000 for the cause. Post war she twice more toured Australia and on retirement from the stage she starred in a number of motion pictures, the last of which was in 1954. She died peacefully in London in 1966 aged 92. Further reading. ANZAC Ada Reeve The soldiers’ friend. Martina Lipton pdf UQ e space. Jean Batten (1909-1982) was New Zealand’s most famous aviator/aviatrix. She was inspired by the deering-do feats of the early pioneer aviators and one of her early mentors was Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith. He took her up on one of her earliest flights and gave her two pieces of sagely advice both of which she duely ignored…‘Never

2

fly at night and never try to compete with men!’ She learnt to fly in England in the late 1920’s and her aim was to fly to Australia in record time. She prevailed upon several gentlemen friends to purchase her first aeroplane, a Gypsy Moth and thereafter finance her adventure. In April 1934 she embarked on her first solo attempt to fly to Australia. This escapade ended in disaster as she crashed in a sandstorm in Karachi. Her second attempt the same month also ended in failure with her again crashing having run out of fuel outside Rome. Third time was lucky flying a ‘new’ secondhand Gypsy Moth sponsored by C.C.Wakefield & Co (Castrol Oil). She successfully completed the long trip to Darwin in 14 days 22 hours beating Amy Johnson’s time by some four days and eclipsing Bert Hinkler’s time by several hours. She was glamourous to a tee and reports at the time noted that she used her femme fatale to her great advantage always carrying an elegant silk gown in her luggage. Her Brisbane itinerary for June 18 1934 comprised some seven engagements commencing with a Civic Reception at City Hall at 10.30am and concluding with Dinner and a Dance with the Aeroclub at the Bellevue Hotel at 9pm. Lunch was provided at Tattersall’s Club at 1pm. She was presented with a gold and silver Life Membership badge by the Club President Mr Bill Healy who stated “Miss Batten’s flight record had impressed admirers of courage and endurance throughout the world’. Jean Batten went on to set many more aviation records in her Percival Gull monoplane up to the outbreak of World War 2 when her plane was commissioned by the NZ Air Force and she ceased flying. This very plane (pictured in ‘Friendship is Life’ on page 149) can be seen today suspended from the ceiling of the Auckland International terminal which is named in her honour. She never married and retired to Majorca where she died as a recluse in 1982. Who will be Tattersall’s Club next female Life Member… only time will tell!

FOOD AND BERVERAGE NEWS

Meet Shawn Stanley – Member’s Food and Beverage Service Manager

Congratulations on your recent promotion to Member’s Food and Beverage Service Manager. Thank you, I feel it is a privilege to be given the opportunity to become the Food and Beverage Service Manager and move forward in a workplace that I value. I look forward to meeting the challenges ahead and providing high service to the Tattersall’s Members. The Club has such a sense of community, not just in the Membership base but within the staff, which has created special moments where I have been able to be a part of and witness the friendships and family dining experience that is Tattersall’s Club.

How long have you been working at Tattersall’s Club and what are your main duties? I have worked at Tattersall’s Club for 13 years now with my main duties including the creation

+FOOD AND BEVERAGE NEWS of a unique dining experience and guiding the Member’s through their dining experiences in both the Healy Room and Member’s Dining Room. I continue to work closely with the Cellarmaster Luke and Chef Pete and his team to produce an exciting wine list and menus that Members can enjoy.

Are there any upcoming events that Members should look out for? Upcoming events that I am excited to be a part of includes an all-time Club favourite, the Christmas in July Dinner Dance which is occurring on Friday 26th of July, where you can bring your family and friends to the Member’s Dining Room, enjoy a festive meal and a fun filled night of entertainment. The always thought provoking “An Evening With…” events will be occurring throughout winter consisting of an evening with Anthony Siebold on the 4th of June, An Evening with Chris Fagan on the 30th July and An Evening with Dr Brendan Nelson AO on the 21st of August.

What can we expect for the new winter menu? We have our June monthly special which is a gourmet pie starting on Monday the 3rd of June. This will change weekly and will reflect wholesome, local, Queensland produce and the modern menu that we have created that is unique to Tattersall’s. Furthermore, my personal favourites on our upcoming winter menu include our braised lamb shank and Thai orange and chilli beef curry dishes. Expect some great weekly specials from our expert chef team and do not hesitate to ask our friendly wait staff for what is on offer.

1. TMC’s Harald Goddartz 50th Bday at Tattersall’s. 2. TMC on the Great Ocean Road Victoria. 3. TMC at Freycinet Coles Bay. 4. Tenterfield Saturday night drinks. 5. TMC Birthday Celebration at Tatts.

A very warm welcome to all our new Tattersall’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen Members. It is great to see the many of you who have also joined us at Tattersall’s Motorcycle Club (TMC). Our 2019 TMC year kicked off in February with a spirited ride to the new Flying Bean Café in the Gold Coast Hinterland of Beechmont. Our route took us through Canungra Valley, across a section of Mt Tamborine, then up and across the Beechmont mountain tops. Sweeping panoramic views surround this café which makes the ultimate view point to watch hang gliders and parasailers launch their wings. The month of March bought up our annual Tenterfield weekend escape which is always a very popular calendar event each year. The wet Saturday morning start did not deter the 16 strong line up of Members and Guests as we headed out through the Numinbah Valley stopping at one of our favourite destinations for lunch – Two Pines Café near The Natural Arch. Our route then took us through Murwillumbah, Lillian Rock, on to Kyogle, South to Casino then climbing up over the Girard State Forest Range and down into Tenterfield.

5

The weekend escape also marked the special occasion of TMC’s Committeeman, Harald Goddertz, 50th Birthday which was celebrated with true TMC spirit on the Saturday night over dinner and drinks. “Our Place” Restaurant and Bar which hosted us is a must do in the Northern Rivers region. TMC reached the shores of Tasmania in April as four of us set out on a 13 day two wheel adventure escape around the island. Before heading across Bass Straight we started with a warm up route of The Great Ocean Road with an overnight stay in Port Campbell. After docking in Devonport our coast to coast escape route of Tassie took us to Stanley, Cradle Mountain, Strahan, Hobart, Freycinet Coles Bay, St Helens, Launceston, then back to Devonport for the ship home. Our routes were carved out through the stunning remote country roads of Tassie encapsulating the most naturally beautiful regions of the island. Our accommodation was as diverse as Tasmania itself from heritage listed homes and cottages through to modern day, just as our restaurant

venues were in hosting the finest local produce and wines. With the Tassie trip such a memorable highlight the destination of New Zealand has already been floated as the offshore escape for 2020. In late April we honour the late Tattersall’s and TMC Member, John Herbert, with a memorial ride to Mapleton and lunch. May brings up our Ravensbourne Hampton ride then lunch in Maleny making the June half year point on our TMC Calendar. An invitation is open to all to join us at any TMC social event, be it on two wheels or four. AMICITIA VITA EST Friendship is Life… is TMC… is Tattersall’s Club. A groundswell of support has come with suggestions of events ranging from 4WD adventures, vintage motoring outings, sports car routes, European Marque outings through to driver training events and family days out. A note of thanks goes out to Motor Group Members Colin Creed, Serio Sarri, Troy Chaplin and Steve Coats and Peter Mathews who have all contacted me directly in support of taking the Club forward. The Motor Group was officially launched at Tattersall’s Club in October 2018 and was followed by the first outing on four wheels

later that month. The outing commenced with coffee hosted at the Mercedes-Benz Toowong Dealership then headed out through the Brisbane Valley region of Wivenhoe Dam. The final stage of the drive was up and across Mt Glorious to Cloverlea Cottage for brunch. This cottage is a converted dairy farm house and boasts sweeping views from its deck out over Brisbane from its Eastern point on Mt Glorious. The perfect destination for a day’s outing. The Motor Group comprises of every aspect and interest of motoring passions and is set to deliver wonderful experiences for all involved. Thanks and appreciation from all at the Motor Group goes out to Rowan Jamieson for

his hard work in forming and launching the Club. We look forward to Rowan’s ongoing involvement and input. To all those with the passion for four wheels: we look forward to a wonderful Club future. +SNOOKER CLUB By Tim Woolley The Snooker Club AGM and prize giving took place on 11 February when Jim Wicks received his trophies, as well as the runners up and those in B and C Grades mentioned previously. The C Grade Championship trophy was of course the new Ray Garske Memorial Trophy, and another addition was the shield donated by Neville Veal for the highest break, won by Peter Davies. Our annual dinner followed, much enjoyed by all as usual, and the traditional 9 Ball competition. Late February saw us embark on this year’s overseas trip to Singapore and Bangkok. Our first match was against the Singapore

Cricket Club on Friday 22 February where an extremely sociable evening resulted in a clear victory for our hosts who were as generous in their hospitality as ever. The following day we played the Tanglin Club where their equally generous hospitality did not prevent us from scoring a decisive victory of 8 frames to 2. However, both matches were conducted in the amicable spirit we have come to expect from our friends in Singapore. Our next stop was in Bangkok where, on Monday 25, we played the Royal Bangkok Sporting Club at their splendid premises where their standard of play proved again too much for our team over the course of a wonderful afternoon and evening with them.

By Rod Anderson Rimfire Metallic Silhouette

The Shooters Interest Group is now an ‘Approved Club’ with the Queensland Police Service for category A (rimfire rifle and shotgun) and B (centrefire rifle). We now own our own Club firearms and have affiliated with the State body for rimfire events – Queensland Target Sports. In early April, seven of our Members undertook a written examination on the national rules for rimfire rifle and were practically assessed as Range Officers conducting a rifle range practice.

On 28 April 2019, we held our first rimfire metallic silhouette event at Belmont Shooting Complex using our own Range Officer. In the rimfire metallic silhouette event, the metal fallover targets are shot at four different distances out to 100m using sporting .22LR rifles. These targets are shaped as chickens (35m), pigs (55m), turkeys (70m) and rams (90m). We had great weather on 28 April for the 13 shooters that tried the rimfire metallic silhouette discipline.

competition, with an undefeated streak of 9 successive finals wins, and a total winning record of 10 championships in all.

By Adrian Symons In the renascent days of the Racqueteers following a somewhat fallow period at the end of the 70’s, our patriarch Reg Kempnich decided that a competition would spice up our meetings, so the Regis Cup for the best singles player in the Club was born in 1981, and Norm Katter was the inaugural winner. In subsequent years the event was utterly dominated by Ron Hambleton, who clocked up wins on 19 occasions before age and the demands of singles play started to weary him and he gracefully retired from the fray with his legacy intact. His tennis shoes were neatly filled by Rick Rylands, who emerged from the Hambleton shadows to exert a similar supremacy in this

The thankless and vexing task of arranging players for each set during an afternoon falls on the valiant shoulders of court captain Kos Psaltis, who administers this role with fairness and firmness, always alert to the attempted machinations and manoeuvrings of those less scrupulous players (are there any?) seeking to manipulate arrangements to afford themselves the most favourable partners and opponents. However even Kos cannot claim any prescience in arranging a set recently which saw the founder of the Regis Cup, its first winner, and the two most dominant contestants in its history, all pitted against each other, a combination which no one can recall ever having happened before. Despite a considerable lapse of time since Norm Katter took pole position on the Regis Cup nameplate, his influence within the Racqueteers remains undimmed, having been reinforced by his generous donation of a handsome Waterford crystal tennis racquet as a trophy presented annually to the Member who best exemplifies the spirit of the Racqueteers, both on and off the court.

The current winner is semi-retired Churchie teacher Russell Barker, who played with the Racqueteers a decade or so ago until the demands of teaching kept him off the courts, but his recent return was warmly welcomed by all, as he is an ever-amiable presence off the court, and a pleasure to play with or against on the court. He has undoubtedly enhanced our playing stocks, for he is a more than capable exponent of the game, but more importantly, he is a humble and engaging companion to us all, and is to be congratulated as a most worthy winner. + CYCLING CLUB By Milton Burrell Tattersall’s Cycling Club (TCC) caters for all levels of cycling fitness and ability and welcomes all Tattersall’s Members and Guests to ‘come ride with us.’ Wow, what a great start to the year which kicked off in February with our traditional start-of-year Tattersall’s ride and Club breakfast which saw 26 Members come out and ride the Brisbane to Wellington Point loop. March included our (delayed) AGM and social dinner. A fun night which showcased the TCC achievements and events throughout the 2018 year. Many thanks to those who attended and for returning to the TCC Committee for another year. Thank you! March also saw Eric Hewett, Nick Rudd and Milton Burrell ride the Ipswich 100. Nick cycled 160kms averaging 30kph while mere mortals Eric and Milton cycled the 100km version averaging around 28kph. Great job Nick, what a legend! April was Tour de Brisbane month with Brisbane hosting the inaugural international UCI World Series event and your Tattersall’s cycling team did the Club proud. There was a total of 1,591 riders across the 45km (Piccolo) and 110km (Gran Fondo) rides, 462 of these riders electing to exclude the Mt Coot-tha (MC) climb of around 9km. • Brad, Liz, Chris and John finished first in the Piccolo rides for their age group - well done! • Darren placed a very credible eighth in his group of 17 riders - great job Darren • Matt and Milton completed the 100km version (so no Coot-tha) climbing 1,050m in the process - both finishing first in their respective age groups - terrific! (see results table above) The 1,129 riders who rode 110km climbing a total of 1,400m: • A big well done to four of our guys; Wayne Fleming, Peter Robinson, Rick Green and

+ CLASSIC FILM CLUB By Michael Halliday After another very successful year in 2018, the Classic Film Group season commenced in February with the return of Humphrey Bogart in the great American classic The Caine Mutiny introduced by naval historian and Club Member Harvey Greenfield and enjoyed by over 40 attendees at the movie and dinner. A touch of French cinema followed in March with the screening of Manon Des Sources, the hauntingly beautiful sequel to Jean De Florette (shown to the Group last year) with the music of Verdi enhancing the experience following an excellent French-themed dinner.

+WINE CLUB By Chris Elliott Tattersall’s Wine Club had only one Life Member, the inimitable Hal Davis. All that changed on 6 April when Life Membership was conferred on Wine Club Committee stalwart, Geoff Veal. Geoff joined the Wine Club 28 years ago and has served with dedication on the Committee for two decades. Members and guests enthusiastically congratulated Geoff on receiving this well-deserved accolade for his service to the Wine Club. In February, 92 pinotphiles savoured the all Pinot Noir line-up from Wooing Tree of Central Otago (NZ). Owner/winemaker, Stephen Farquharson, made the trip across the ditch to personally present his wines to our Members. In March, our guest presenter came from even further afar when Guillaume Blanchard,

By contrast the April movie The Blues Brothers kept the audience on their toes with rhythm and blues, soul and blues singing by the likes of James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles. Following a further survey of Group Members, the film program for the coming years has been updated to reflect current Member preferences with the result that a varied program of films is planned for screening during the remainder of the year including Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Death In Venice, The Producers and La Cage Aux Folles amongst others.

Screenings will be advertised both in the Tattersall’s Mail and the Film Group Members’ monthly emails. New Members are always welcome. 1. Regional Manager, South East Asia, introduced 137 guests to the wines of Castello Banfi. The fine wines from Tuscany and Piedmont were paired with traditional Italian fare to great effect. In April, David Ritchie, owner/winemaker from Delatite flew in from the rolling hills at the base of Mt Buller (VIC) to give 73 Members a taste of the “High Country”. His biodynamic and organic wines were expertly paired with a sumptuous five course degustation menu. Each year the Wine Club makes one excursion away from Tattersall’s to enjoy our own patiently cellared wines over an indulgent Sunday luncheon. This year, La Vue, on the City Reach Boardwalk, was chosen for our outing in May. This annual event is growing in popularity to the extent that the 70 seats were sold within 24 hours of the invitations being issued. Our June event is one for the white wine lovers. On Friday, 21 June we will be showing the wines of a range of quality producers over an all-white wine luncheon. Later, a highlight of the year will be the Black Tie Gala Dinner to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Wine Club. We are going
