TSSDC MUMBAI Story—A Journey, An Experience, A Feeling!

TSSDC Mumbai’s journey started in 2016 with an aim to train youth to contribute to our nation’s motto of Skill India.

The centre operations began in March 2016 focusing on our philosophy of “No Youth Left Behind”, aiming to multiply career growth, raise the benchmark of vocational training, and lend permanence to this revolution.

Our first batch started with the same trigger. From 9 learners, today we have trained and certified 1500 plus learners. From 3 classroom/lab setups we have expanded to 9 of them. From 1 trade we are today able to offer to youth 13 different trades. From 3 facilitators we are now a 14-member strong team!

And the journey continues….

Editorial Hi Friends, I welcome you to our monthly newsletter! I am delighted to introduce this 1st edition of the TSSDC Mumbai newsletter. We intend to make it a regular publication and to use it to keep you all updated with the happening news at the centre.

I am happy to share the achievements, events, and stories of our centre. The year unfolds with one new course adding to our bouquet of courses: Beauty Advisor. A beauty advisor is a cosmetic and skincare salesperson. The main job of a beauty advisor is to meet sales goals while offering personalized customer service and maintaining long-lasting relationships with customers. This course is aligned to the National Occupation Standards QP BWS/Q0103. The course eligibility is 12th pass, and is ideal for youngsters with artistic flair. And we hope that this course will open larger avenues of jobs for youth in Navi Mumbai and around.

Women’s Day Celebration: 8th March 2019 'The Dot That Went For A Walk' This book talks about 51 stories of highly accomplished women of India, right from Rani Laxmi Bai, Indira Gandhi and Kiran Bedi to Deepika Padukone. It is a new way of storytelling for kids, especially young girls, to imbibe the idea into young minds that just like the 51 women spoken about in the book, princesses don't need a prince to save them. We have a similar story in TSSDC Mumbai.

Sharmavati Kumari is married and has a 1.5-year-old kid to look after. She had a dream to become a Doctor. Due to her financial background and orthodox family, Sharmavati ended up in a marriage. She still convinced her husband and in-laws to support her in achieving her dream, and she decided to stand on her own and look for opportunities while giving confidence to her husband and in-laws that household chores and daily routine would not get affected if she works.

Initially, her husband was hesitant to support Sharmvati. However later on he decided to give it a chance. He got to know about Tata STRIVE through his friend and enrolled Sharmavati for the General Duty Assistant training as she could see a ladder towards her dream through this course.

Tata STRIVE learnings helped her to build self-confidence and come out of her shell and achieve her dream. She successfully completed the training, with an on-job training at Shivaji Hospital. She was the first in her batch to get selected at Nightingale Home Health Care with a CTC of INR 1,52,400/-. She has taken a very bold step with her husband’s support. Her employer is very happy with her performance, and so are her husband and in-laws.

This change in the trend of the portrayal of Sharmvati is a sign of the evolving mindset of the people and an inspiration for other women too.

Stories of Transformation My Goal: My Identity

Perchance to Dream

She had her head buried in her hands, and there were tears in her eyes. Being an orphan‌it was never easy. Even after being c rushed a nd shackled with the agony of the Nemat Shaikh past , young Food and Nemat never lost Beverage Steward hope; instead her course agony fueled her to create her identity.

Rohit Thapa lives in an orphanage in Koparkhairane.

He is SSC pass.

He wished to study further, but due to his financial situation, he was guided to take Rohit Thapa up a training Assistant course which Electrician course could get him a job immediately. He came to know about Tata STRIVE through the officials at his orphanage.

She stayed with Saksham NGO, she completed her secondary schooling from a municipal school in Mumbai and they referred her to Tata STRIVE. As she was interested in making her career in the hospitality industry, she enrolled for the Food and Beverage training program. Her hunger to learn more was omnipresent.

Rohit was excited about getting practical learning in Tata STRIVE. He thought he could achieve his ambitions starting from here.

Rohit was a shy and reserved young adult when he joined Tata STRIVE. He was always reluctant to mix with others. The initial self-discovery helped him open up and build confidence. He is a talented artist. During chart making he received appreciation from his batch mates and facilitators which helped him recognize his potentials. This helped him to take on more responsibilities in class. His curiosity to learn helped him grasp things and be efficient in his domain. Soon he was the preferred learner not only for the Facilitator, but also for the admin to solve any electrical issues arising in the premises.

Nemat barely spoke in the class during the initial phase of the training and doubted her capabilities. With the help of coaching and counselling she tried to realize the importance of the training imparted at Tata STRIVE. She started to practice the learnings in the classroom and consulted facilitators at regular intervals. She also started mingling with other learners in the classroom.

Nemat joined Vivanta by Taj President for her one month On Job Training. She was regular at her work and diligently strived to be better. With the support of her colleagues at work place she developed more confidence and successfully completed her training.

Currently Rohit is working with MB Enterprises as an Assistant Electrician and giving his best at the job. He says all the practical experience gained at Tata STRIVE is helping him a lot at his workplace.

Nemat is currently working with Afoozo Restaurant in Andheri and is regular at her work.

She enjoys being in the hospitality industry and is thankful to Tata STRIVE and Saksham foundation for giving this opportunity.

OUR PRIDE Shreeram comes from a small village in Sangli district of Maharashtra. His entire family is engaged in agriculture and his father makes living by selling milk. He came to know about F&B Service course at Tata Strive by a WhatsApp message and as he was interested in working in hotels, he immediately enrolled for the course.

When he joined Tata Strive he was a shy learner and he is to be reluctant to participate in the classroom activities. With the Youth Development Module and domain training he started opening up and sharing his ideas. He started making new friends and regularly participating in the various activities in the centre.

Shreeram Kulkarni Food & Beverage serShreeram Kulkarni joined Taj Lands End hotel Mumbai for his one month vice steward on job training. He worked with extreme dedication and showed learning attitude. He utilized this opportunity to prepare himself for the professional opportunities that would come his way after the training. Shreeram says “the technical skills he learnt during the classroom training at Tata Strive helped him during the on job training and he got platform to showcase them”.

After the On Job Training, he was chosen for India Skills Competition – which is the pathway to the World Skill competition, by his Facilitator because of his artistic skills showcased during classroom Shreeram with Gold Med- activities. With just a short training he participated in State level al and Winners Trophy at competition in Floristry and won Gold Medal at the event. He went on to represent Maharashtra State in the Regional level of the comRegional Level World petition and won Gold Medal again in the category. He proudly repSkills Competition resented Southern Region at Delhi at the National Level India Skills competition and won Silver Medal at the National Level.

TSSDC Learner to Employee Manali joined the CRM Executive batch 1 with an aim to sustain a position in the ITES Industry. Compassionate, Patient and a good leader are a few attributes evident in her personality.

A boy who pursued his dream Vikas Mahendrakar a jovial dedicated individual with dreams to make it big. He enrolled in the Assistant Electrician course. An ardent learner, inquisitive and curious to know new things. His dedication and diligence aided in securing a job overseas.

He is currently employed with a construction company “Qatar Petroleum” as a Fire safety supervisor with a CTC of 3.6 LPA based at Abu Dhabi.

Her perseverance and hard work has helped a secure a position at TSSDC Mumbai Call Centre as Call Centre Executive.

STRIVE Speak Education to Employment

It is no secret that unemployment amongst graduates in India is high, one of the major reasons being a mismatch of existing skills with requirements in the working world. This mismatch affects the first/second-generation collegegoing student even further, especially if he/she is from a low-income background.

Bridging this gap is Tata STRIVE’s Institute Enrichment Programme, a unique model where we support educational institutes that typically cater to disadvantaged communities by imparting employability skills to their students on the institute campus after class hours through a) job-ready, service-oriented domain course offerings integrated with Youth Development Modules (YDM), b) standalone YDM of either 80, 120, or 300 hours depending upon the re- Henna Desai quirement of the segment. Tata STRIVE’s Inroads into Agriculture To address the skilling gap in agricultural and allied activities Tata STRIVE has collaborated with Sahyadri Farms, a farmer producer company, to pilot skilling of youth in Nashik. Some of the significant steps till date taken towards the success of this initiative are as follows:   
