DSL internet connectivity uses copper phone lines to transfer data. This is the primary service available in many rural areas. For a DSL connection, you will need a DSL modem unless you use a computer with a built in voiceband modem.
Generally, DSL has a speed range of 1 to 6 Mbps, but some providers can offer much higher speeds. The uplink and the downlink speed of DSL can be symmetrical or asymmetrical. The connectivity speed of DSL can lower many available internet connections, but for personal use, it is more than enough. The connectivity and maintenance expense is much lower than any other internet connection. The DSL internet connection is often provided by phone companies because they already have the infrastructure.
The cable is a high speed internet connection that uses a coaxial cable. The different cable service providers provide these services. So like DSL broadband, the infrastructure of cable internet connection isn’t required any new addition.
Cable internet can provide a much higher speed than DSL, which is approx. 500 Mbps. But the upload speed is much lower than the download speed on cable internet. For personal and household work, cable internet is more than enough unless you do something that requires extreme internet speed.
Both DSL and cable internet connection are mainly used as broadband connections. You can find both connections on various ISPs. Here are the differences between the DSL and cable internet connections in various categories.
