and events for the whole family.
When you spend as much time on this island as I have, you start to notice not just the subtle changes that each season brings, but the sweeping changes that only come over time.
As I write this, the “off season” is just beginning, with the droves of summer tourists making their way back north and the island slowly returning to normal. But I’ve noticed that in recent years, “normal” isn’t the same as it used to be.
When I first moved here, activity on the island would fall to such a hush this time of year that you could sit by the side of William Hilton Parkway and count how many cars were driving by. With no tourists, and a local population that’s a fraction of what it is today, it was an especially tough time of year for our restaurants. It wasn’t uncommon for some places to just completely close for the winter, with their seasonal workers chasing the tourists season as it moved to winter towns in Colorado or Florida.
That is just not the case anymore. These days, the “off season” is sometimes just as busy as the summers were back then, and now we’re starting to see more visitors coming here for the cooler months, joined by the snowbirds flocking from the snow. Add to that the population boom we’ve seen around here, particularly in the last few years, and you have a season that’s quickly becoming one of my favorites.
The reason is simple: these months are made for dining out. You can’t count the cars on 278, but you aren’t fighting summer traffic to get to your favorite place. The wait lists, which soar during the summer, are nonexistent. And the servers, flush from the summer months, are able to give that little extra bit of care without a crowd to feed.
It’s no wonder that restaurant week dominates this time of year, with great specials all over the island tempting us to try something new. If summer is tourist season, then winter is our culinary season. Get out there, take advantage of the lighter crowds, and discover why Hilton Head Island becomes better and better for dining out with every season.

THE BEAT GOES ON
The Jazz Corner, one of the island’s most storied institutions, sets the stage for the next feast for the senses.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMAN AND GENERATION PORTRAITS BY AUDRA
It’s been called the only true American art form. Jazz, that freeform sonic celebration, has always served as the soundtrack to life’s most unforgettable moments. It’s a slinky, sensual sound that can season the air around a formal gala, it’s notes accompanied by the clink of champagne glasses. It’s a visceral experience that can fill a dance floor and crank up every pulse in the room. It’s a soothing backdrop to a romantic interlude, layering love over rhythm and harmony.
It’s more than just music. It’s a means of expression, almost indefinable in its complexity. Jazz can be a sound. It can be a look. It can be a flavor. It can be a feeling. And sometimes, Jazz can be a place. When Bob and Lois Masteller launched The Jazz Corner into Hilton
Head Island’s cultural landscape, it was immediate from the beginning that the very notion of Jazz was woven into every fiber of the restaurant’s being. An experienced Jazz musician who had come to Hilton Head in the 70s to work for Charles Fraser, Bob had never forgotten the thread of music that had run through his entire life, dating back to his own father who’d led big bands during the swing era.
“My dad’s focus was always on preserving that great acoustic experience and making sure the food was just as exceptional. After playing so many venues that he felt were missing something, he set out to one day create the perfect club.” said David Masteller, Bob’s son.
David, an accomplished musician in his own right, became an integral part of the
club operations after his father passed in 2015.
“At first, it was quite intimidating,” he said. “But I was able to put my own stamp on things—make changes, refine operations, and improve efficiency. Practically overnight, I had to step into a leadership role, and that was something I wasn’t accustomed to.”
He credits GM Kelli Lesch for her steadfast leadership through the transition. A fixture at The Jazz Corner, Lesch has been a part of the family since day one.
Within the first few years of The Jazz
Corner’s existence, word spread beyond our island, reaching every corner of the wider Jazz community, drawing talent from all over the world to this small island paradise. Today, The Jazz Corner is one of the hottest rooms in the business.
“It’s remarkable to look back,” said David. “In the beginning, very few people knew about us. Now, we receive calls and emails daily from musicians excited at the prospect of performing here. It’s deeply rewarding to see artists list The Jazz Corner alongside esteemed venues like the Kennedy Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center on their bios. To be included in such company is truly an honor.”
Along with rotating nights featuring acclaimed regional artists, The Jazz Corner’s stage has hosted some of the Jazz world’s biggest names. Since opening night, when pianist George Shearing helped welcome the first guests, The Jazz Corner has hosted everyone from the famed Marsalis family’s patriarch Ellis Marsalis to John Pizzarelli to Deana Martin (Dean’s daughter).
David performs every Tuesday in honor of his father, celebrating the music of New Orleans —a tradition that was always Bob’s night at the club.”
But Bob Masteller’s original vision—sustained by Lois, David, and the Jazz Corner family, with Lois as the matriarch— was always to pair the acoustic experience of Jazz with an equally exceptional culinary standard. Lois’s warmth and hospitality form the very core of the club’s culture and make every guest feel personally welcomed.
The restaurant’s offerings weave together dishes like Cherry Roasted Duck and Baby Back Ribs with the same energy and precision as the music that plays while you dine.
And like that music, it’s always changing. “The kitchen is constantly attuned to the rhythms of the season,” said David. “Being featured in Southern Living solely for food was incredibly rewarding.”
Like the musicians on stage, the artists in the kitchen infuse each dish with a hint of improvisation behind the studied techniques, mirroring their frenetic energy and creating culinary inspiration.
Like any Jazz musician, David Masteller understands the importance of keeping things flexible—allowing for spontaneous invention that can transform a song while remaining rooted in its original spirit. This philosophy extends seamlessly to the club: continually moving forward while always honoring what has made The Jazz Corner so special from the start.
In closing, David noted, “We’ve accomplished a great deal, and we strive to deliver world-class entertainment, gourmet cuisine, and attentive, personal service. Above all, our goal is to maintain the environment my parents envisioned--a warm, vibrant and cozy atmosphere where every guest feels at home.”

FROM THE HOSTESS CITY TO HILTON HEAD
A long-time staple of Savannah’s reinvigorated historic district, Carlito’s Mexican Bar & Grill continues a family legacy on Hilton Head Island.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMAN
There’s more on the menu at Carlito’s Mexican Bar & Grill than simply delicious food.
Of course, that’s not to say the food doesn’t tell a story all its own. Spanning Tex-Mex and old school Mexican cuisine, it expands on the typical rundown of burritos, tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas with recipes treasured by the Ortiz family who founded it. Here discerning diners can go beyond the usual with Molcajetes brimming with authentic ingredients, ceviche, mussels, steak, and more prepared in methods that span the entire spectrum of Mexican food.
It’s a dedication to elevated ingredients and techniques that made the original Carlito’s Mexican Bar & Grill an immediate hit when it first opened in the heart of Savannah’s downtown. Opening their doors in 2004, when revitalization was still transforming the former red-light district into a hopping cultural hotspot, the Ortiz family knew their new location was a gamble.
But they also knew the rewards would be rich.
“We saw the potential in downtown Savannah when others didn’t,” said Gustavo Ortiz. “We weren’t just opening a restaurant—we were investing in a neighborhood.”
Gustavo was just nine years old when his family launched Carlito’s, naming their restaurant after their youngest son Carlos. His sister Kayla was just 3. And yet the two of them have not only taken the family legacy in hand, they’ve moved it forward in ways that have set the restaurant apart.
“It wasn’t just a business,” said Kayla. “It was our second home. Every member of our family played a role.”
She means that. She and her brother came into management from the ground up, bussing tables and greeting customers before helping out in the kitchen. As they got older and the restaurant’s profile grew in the now-bustling downtown area, each got a chance to step in and help manage here and there,
giving them a holistic education on how the restaurant works.
And that family atmosphere soon extended beyond the Ortizes. The loyal and ever-growing customer base soon embraced Carlito’s as a hub of the community, deepening local ties not only between the family and their customers, but also throughout the community. Kayla added to the hospitality by expanding the menu into vegetarian and vegan realms, creating plant-based options that still adhered to the family’s time-tested techniques.
“That was a huge point of pride,” she said. “We wanted everyone to feel welcome, and that meant making space for different dietary needs without sacrificing flavor.”
Once again, the menu played a large role in the restaurant’s success, but their commitment to community set it apart. The Ortiz family could be found at nearly every community event, from SCAD food festivals to the Savannah Latin and Jazz Festivals. They partnered with area schools and neighborhood organizations to host fundraisers and give back. And the community responded, bestowing on them awards for “Best Margaritas” and “Best Mexican Restaurant.” But the family was never in it for the accolades. They were in it for the community they helped establish. During the devastation of Hurricane Matthew, they were one of the few restaurants that stayed open even as the storm hit.
“We had people coming in while the hurricane was still raging,” recalled Carlos Ortiz. “We couldn’t turn them away. That’s the kind of community we had—resilient and loyal.”
But that commitment to their customers has always been as important to the Ortiz family as ensuring each dish on the menu is mouth-wateringly authentic.
“We got to know generations of families who dined with us,” said Gustavo. “We celebrated birthdays, engagements, anniversaries. We were part of people’s lives, and that means everything.”
On October 20, 2019, Carlito’s closed its Savannah doors, but that didn’t stop the Ortiz family’s commitment to offering outstanding Mexican food in a family environment. It just shifted it a little further north. The Ortiz family shortly relocated and reopened Carlito’s Mexican Bar & Grill in Hilton Head, bringing with them their signature flavors, festive energy, and commitment to community.
The new location has already begun to thrive, but the Ortiz family remains grateful for their Savannah roots.
“Savannah made us who we are,” said Kayla. “Without the love and support of our customers, we wouldn’t be here today.”
While the address has changed, the heart of Carlito’s remains the same: family, community, and a passion for hospitality. As Carlito’s Mexican Bar & Grill continues to grow in Hilton Head, the Ortiz family is focused on honoring the legacy they built in Savannah—one dish, one customer, and one memory at a time.
“We hope to keep making people feel at home, no matter where we are,” said Gustavo. “Because at the end of the day, that’s what Carlito’s is all about.”

A Taste of Tradition
With this year’s event, The Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival tells a story of Lowcountry cuisine that’s generations old.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS PROVIED BY HILTON HEAD SEAFOOD FESTIVAL
The culinary traditions that have long defined the Lowcountry are legend. The anticipated hush as a freshly roasted batch of oysters are placed on the table, the curling steam carrying the mouth-watering aroma of perfectly steamed seafood. The first pull of BBQ that has been smoking over hickory overnight, the meat effortlessly peeling into tender juicy morsels. The frying pan sizzle of a filet from a cobia that had been swimming just hours before.
These are the flavors, sights, sounds and smells that put our area in a culinary class by themselves. And if you look at almost all of them, you’ll find that they come from the same place. Long before bridges connected the sea islands of the coast, the Gullah had called this place home for generations. From the earliest days of freedom, they lived off the land. But with what they did in the kitchen, they did more than just live. They thrived.
In their care, local seafood from shrimp to oysters were layered in textures and flavors that highlighted their savoriness. Native vegetables like tomatoes, rice and okra were blended into dishes that spun West African culinary traditions into something entirely new.
This year, the Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival is paying homage to those who pioneered the flavors that remind us all of our Lowcountry home.
“Typically the Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival and the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration are in back-to-back weekends, but with this being the 30th anniversary of the Gullah celebration, we wanted to honor that history,” said Kelly Smith, spokesperson for the festival.
To that end, the signature Saturday event of the week-long
festival will feature a completely immersive experience that lets visitors see just how the Gullah lived and created these traditions.
“We’re going to have a full Gullah village with actors in character sharing their stories,” said Smith. “It’s going to be a complete experience – you’re not just walking around to different food vendors, you really feel like you’re back in time.”
To help set the tone, Grammy Award-winning roots band Ranky Tanky will be on stage during the Saturday event, weaving together the folk traditions of Gullah music with an upbeat jazzy sound.
This dedication to storytelling runs through the entire lineup. The festival has always been a weeklong love letter to seafood, but this year’s edition doubles down with each event offering a deeper dive into the people, places, and flavors that define coastal Carolina.
Running throughout the week, regular tours will wind through Daufuskie Island, giving visitors unprecedented access to the island’s rich history and culture. And each of the events running up to the main event, from Wednesday night’s Asado by the Sea to Thursday night’s Zero Forks Given will highlight a different chapter in our area’s culinary story.
This year’s Zero Forks Given, a laid-back night of cutlery-free finger foods, will also give visitors a chance to check out the new look at the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort where it’s hosted.
“We just completed a $26 million renovation, which was a twoyear process,” said Director of Sales and Marketing Chris Long. “It’s a completely brand new room product that has a much more beach feel, and a lot of people are going to get to see the new
rooms during this year’s event. The Seafood Festival is a such a good community-wide initiative and it always gives our guests something to look forward to.”
In telling our story, the festival will also bring back the tales that made this event a landmark for Hilton Head Island.
The beloved Pig Pickin’ & Oyster Roast returns February 27, promising the smoky perfume of pulled pork and roasted oysters beneath a canopy of live oaks. And, of course, the crown jewel remains the Saturday Seafood Festival, a sprawling showcase of coastal cuisine, live entertainment, and good old-fashioned Southern hospitality.
This year’s Saturday event, taking place February 28, will bring together some of the Southeast’s most talented chefs for an Iron Chef–style competition that’s as fun to watch as it is to taste. Under the open sky, guests will wander from tent to tent sampling everything from she-crab soup to grilled grouper tacos, from freshly shucked oysters to artful takes on shrimp and grits. It’s a sensory overload in the best possible way — a reminder that Lowcountry food is equal parts tradition and innovation, simplicity and spectacle.
And this year, the festival will show of the Lowcountry’s wild side with excursions that let people really explore the area, from archery and rock climbing to water experiences and a family fishing night on Wednesday.
That connection between people, place, and purpose has come to define the Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival. While it’s known for its food, its true legacy lies in what it gives back. The event is organized by the David M. Carmines Foundation, named for Andrew’s late brother and established to honor his memory. Since its inception, the festival has raised more than $1.2 million for local charities and environmental organizations, each one devoted to preserving the natural and cultural resources that make this region so special.
Those funds ripple throughout the Lowcountry, supporting institutions like the Coastal Discovery Museum, South Carolina Aquarium, Waddell Mariculture Center, Island Recreation Scholarship Fund, Port Royal Sound Foundation, Gullah Heritage Museum, and the Medical University of South Carolina. Every ticket, every toast, every shared plate helps fuel these efforts — ensuring that the beauty and bounty of the Lowcountry endure for generations to come.

Restaurant Week
Presented by the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce
BY ALLYSON JONES • PHOTO BY ROB KAUFMAN
One of the Island’s tastiest and most eagerly anticipated events for both locals and visitors in the know is Restaurant Week which takes place January 31-February 7, 2026.
Presented by the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, this annual event 18 years in the making features more than 80 area restaurants serving prix-fixe (fixed price) menus showcasing their most popular appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts, as well as some new dishes to test out. These menus are then posted on the Chamber’s dedicated Restaurant Week website, ChamberRestaurantWeek.com.
Locally owned and operated by Gary and Penny Duren, Catch 22 on New Orleans Road has been serving hand-cut, prime beef and fresh, local fish filleted in house for 25 years.
Open Monday through Saturday for dinner, Catch 22 also offers Early Dining Specials, as well as Happy Hour and Bar Specials. Restaurant Week is yet another opportunity to serve their loyal customer base.
Many of the restaurant’s most popular dishes will appear on their three-course Restaurant Week menu, along with some new items.
From Fried Brussel Sprouts, Coconut Shrimp, Daufuskie Hush Puppies, 5 Onion Soup or Caesar Romaine Salad to the 3 Onion Crusted Pork Chop, Cracked Pepper Tuna, Pan Seared Scallops and Ravioli, Crispy Roasted Half Duck or USDA Prime Filet Mignon, both the regular and Restaurant Week menu have something for every taste.
Penny’s opinion on Restaurant Week is simple and emphatic, “We LOVE it! We can offer a great price point to thank our regular customers who support us in the off season, as well as the rest of the year.”
Tucked away on Executive Park Road, Stellini is another familyowned establishment which has served as the Lowcountry’s “Little Italy” for nearly four decades with expertly prepared dishes from New York City and Northern New Jersey.
“We’ve participated since the Chamber began Restaurant Week,” says Stellini co-owner Elise Parlagreco. “It attracts the locals, and we get a lot of people who come in that see our menu on the Chamber’s website who haven’t come in before.”
Stellini plans to offer a four-course Restaurant Week menu similar to years past with a choice of appetizer, salad, entrée and dessert for around $42.
“Veal Saltimbocca is always on the menu and the Grouper Piccata,” she explains. “For appetizers, we usually have the Mozzarella Stuffed Meatballs and the homemade Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms. Desserts are a choice of cannoli and our chocolate flourless cake. It’s also a great way to try out new dishes to see what kind of reception it gets from diners.”
Open Monday through Saturday for dinner, Stellini will also offer both their regular menu, as well as a three-course Early Dining Menu from 5-5:30 p.m., in addition to its Restaurant Week menu.
“Restaurant Week has always been a great event for us,” notes Earl Nightingale, owner of ELA’s on the Water, an award-winning
as Celeste Coastal
Featuring fresh catch seafood, prime cut steaks and a sophisticated atmosphere with live music, ELA’s is open for dinner nightly and brunch, Sunday through Friday.
“We do a Tasting Menu [at ELA’s], where we take our best items and we shrink down the portions and then match it up with a 50% discount for Restaurant Week,” explains Nightingale.
Tuna Two Ways blackened with wakame salad and tuna pineapple with ginger tartare and wontons is one of the establishment’s most popular appetizers while Pan Seared Diver Scallops paired with grouper or the Braised Short Rib and Salmon Rockefeller have often been offered as entrées on the $55 fourcourse Tasting Menu.
This year, the longtime restaurateur is planning to resurrect a special Wine Tasting Menu during Restaurant Week with curated wines, champagnes or ports to accompany each course for an additional $20.
In 2025, Celeste participated in Restaurant Week for the first time and Nightingale plans to continue the tradition in 2026.
“Showcasing the best of Lowcountry cuisine” with a nod to Cajun/Creole cooking featuring a few family recipes courtesy of his mother-in-law, the restaurant’s namesake, last year Celeste’s Restaurant Week menu featured Char Broiled Oysters, Crispy Haricort Verts, Classic Gumbo, Chopped Beet Salad, American Red Snapper and Herb Roasted Short Rib with a choice of mini beignets or bread pudding for dessert.
“Chamber Restaurant Week has become one of those traditions that everyone looks forward to each year. It’s a chance for residents to visit some of their favorite spots – and maybe try a new one or two – while giving our restaurants a boost during the quieter winter months,” concludes Bill Miles, President & CEO, Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. “We’ve been doing Chamber Restaurant Week for almost two decades. It’s a win for the community and a win for our restaurants.”

DIETARY HABITS
BY CHRISTY BARONI • PHOTO BY ROB KAUFMAN
As we age, our nutritional needs change - and the traditional approach of counting calories or obsessing over individual nutrients is giving way to something more practical: habits over highlights. This is a focus on overall dietary habits, instead of highlighting one aspect of food. This shift moves beyond chasing “high-protein,” “low-fat,” or “low-carb” diets and instead encourages us to build a lifestyle around consistency.
This pattern-based approach aligns with growing findings that it’s not just about what’s in the food (like fat, carbs, or vitamins), but how and what we eat day-to-day that truly impacts longterm health.
HOW WE EAT
Older adults often face unique health challenges: reduced muscle mass, slower metabolism, higher risk of chronic diseases like heart disease or type 2 diabetes, and sometimes difficulty absorbing key nutrients. Rather than trying to solve these issues by chasing isolated “superfoods” or taking multiple supplements, adopting a balanced dietary pattern supports overall wellness more effectively.
Research shows that consistent, habit-based eating is linked to better health outcomes, including reduced inflammation, improved heart and brain health, more consistent weight management, and improved digestive health.
In addition to the health benefits, there are mental health components to how we eat as well. Choosing high sugar / highly processed foods can lead to peaks and valleys in blood sugar. These spikes can impact overall mood, and what is typically associated with ‘willpower’.
Focusing on habits can help create balance in nutrition over the long-haul. For most of us, food is also social, emotional, and tied to culture and habits. That’s why dietary habits, rather than restrictive rules, are easier to maintain and enjoy. Whether it’s a family tradition of eating beans and rice, or a morning habit of oatmeal with berries, the goal is to build habits that nourish your body and fit your life.
A habit focus also allows for infinite flexibility. If you have a slice of cake at a birthday party, no problem. The priority is about what you eat most of the time, not perfection. This mindset supports a healthier relationship with food and makes it easier to stick with good habits long-term.
WHAT WE EAT
Here are a few daily guidelines to help you started:
Prioritize Whole Foods
Choose foods in their natural or minimally processed form. Think: fresh produce, whole grains, legumes, and unprocessed meats. These foods retain their fiber, vitamins, and minerals which are nutrients we all need.
Prioritize Plants
While not necessarily vegetarian, these patterns suggest reducing processed meats in favor of beans, lentils, tofu, and leafy greens. These plant proteins are rich in fiber and create a best case scenario in the digestive system.
Stay Hydrated With Healthy Fluids
Water, herbal teas, or broths are better choices than sugary drinks. Dehydration is a common issue in older adults and can affect cognition and joint health. Adding hydration-rich foods can also help. Consider loading up on things like cucumber, watermelon, spinach, and zucchini to name a few.
To wrap it up, shifting from a “nutrient-counting” mindset to one that emphasizes consistent, healthful dietary habits can be a game-changer for aging adults. It’s more practical, less stressful, and better aligned with what modern nutrition science tells us about aging well.
The bottom line? Think less about how much protein is in your lunch, and more about whether your overall meals reflect balance, variety, and real, whole foods. Over time, these patterns offer the nourishment and protection your body needs to thrive in later years—without the need for a calculator at every meal.

Lobster Alfredo Pasta
Reaching Deep for Neighbors in Need
BY ALLYSON JONES
The holiday season may be a time of giving, but winter is the slowest time of year on Hilton Head Island with many hospitality industry employees scrambling to pay their bills and put food on the table.
For over 50 years, The Deep Well Project has served as a critical safety net for locals in need with one-time emergency rent, mortgage or utility payments; a food pantry; Thanksgiving and Christmas meals; a donation closet with furniture and appliances; an annual Santa Shop; gas cards and/or transportation to doctor appointments; necessary home repairs; and on-site showers and washing machines.
teaming up with Bluffton Self Help to bring some of their successful educational programs to Hilton Head Island, things like ESL classes, financial literacy and basic computer literacy classes,” she adds.
In the late 1960s, former New York public health nurse Charlotte Heinrichs noticed many Native Islanders were suffering from internal parasites due to shallow, contaminated wells.
A tiny woman with a big heart, Heinrichs helped raise money to build deeper wells, while assisting the local midwife in delivering babies, providing medical aid to those who needed it, driving people to doctor’s appointments and helping in any way she could. The Deep Well Project was eventually incorporated as a nonprofit in 1973.
“We’re trying to build a ladder to help people climb out of poverty or climb into a more self-sufficient place,” explains current Deep Well Executive Director Sandy Gillis. “The bottom rungs of that ladder are things like the Food Pantry and housing assistance. Then the higher rungs of that ladder are things like our Circles program.”
“The higher we can get people on that ladder, the more likely they are to be successful and not need outside assistance – they can handle it on their own. And there’s great dignity and there’s great pride for folks to be able to do that.”
“In 2026, we are starting a new initiative
Designated as a South Carolina Angel Charity, more than 93% of Deep Well’s expenditures are spent directly on programs and services. Out of 11 staff members, only three are full-time. Deep Well also has 300 regular volunteers who logged 26,000 volunteer hours last year, in addition to another 100 or so who specifically help with the December Santa Shop.
“It only happens because we essentially have a donated payroll and our building was donated by the Hilton Head Island Rotary Club,” says Gillis.
Many of these volunteers staff the Food Pantry which serves 800-1,000 people per month, with that number expected to rise during the off season.
After filling out a master application listing the ages of everyone in the household, clients make an appointment to pick up around $250 worth of groceries, including milk, meat, eggs, bread, pasta and rice, every three weeks at Deep Well’s Capital Drive location.
“Non-perishable food donations are welcome year-round because everything that gets donated food-wise is one less thing we have to buy,” Gillis notes. “The power of donations is huge. Right now, between $50-$60,000 worth of food
a month is leaving our building. But we are only spending $20,000 a month to purchase food. Partner food organizations like Second Helpings are a huge help with that. And then when 75 people drop off a little bag of food, it makes a huge impact.”
Another holiday tradition is the December Santa Shop where 800 children each year receive new toys, books, games, fishing gear, sporting goods, musical instruments and clothing donated by local groups and individuals. Parents or caregivers then shop the shelves selecting gifts for their children.
In January, after The Santa Shop clears out, donations of major appliances like washers and dryers, stoves and microwaves, as well as furniture, bathroom vanities and other home goods can again be accepted. Many short-term rental owners donate items after remodeling or refreshing their units and free weekly pickup is available.
Since tourism is Hilton Head Island’s main economic engine, Deep Well’s impact on local families reverberates throughout the entire community.
“We see what we are doing as not only helping individuals, but helping the Island community as a whole,” concludes Gillis. “It’s a beautiful place, but it’s also a very expensive place. Because so many people on our Island have too much of their income tied up in housing costs, it just leaves them very vulnerable to the least little bump in the road.”
“It’s so important for our business community that we can stabilize the workforce,” she adds. “Because once we lose people, once they move somewhere else, they are not going to continue to work here.”
The Deep Well Project is located at 80 Capital Drive. For more information on programs offered by the organization or to make a donation or to volunteer, call (843) 785-2849 or visit deepwellproject.org.
