PUBLISHER’S NOTE I used to think of the busy seasons around Hilton Head Island like the tides. The waters would rise, bringing with them visitors from all over the world to vacation and unwind in paradise. Our island’s natural beauty, pristine beaches, immaculate golf courses and world-class restaurants would be the lunar pull in this metaphor, drawing the tide of tourism higher. Then, the summer would give way to fall, and the tide would gently recede, bringing a quiet sense of comfort to Hilton Head Island. These past few years, however, the busy season has been less like a tide and more like a firehose. And I mean that in the best way. The last year and a half have been the busiest I have witnessed in over 32 years of living here. Ever since our island became among the first to loosen, and then remove entirely, pandemic restrictions, there seemed to be a steady stream of visitors as well as new residents buying homes sight unseen. It was as high a tide as many of us have ever seen, and then it just kept surging. With more and more people taking advantage of our special island, of course there are challenges that come with that. Increased traffic on the roads, longer waits at your favorite restaurants, slower rounds on the course and more. But these are burdens we happily bear to share our paradise with the world. But it does remind us of the need for patience. I still love living here and want everyone else to enjoy what we have to offer. There are certain things I try to remember when things seem a bit crowded. If traffic seems busy, think about driving around Atlanta. If the golf courses are crowded, think about trying to play in February in the Midwest. If you have to wait 15 minutes to get a table at a restaurant, remember the sheer variety of amazing food we enjoy here. Whether you are visiting this summer, are enjoying your first summer as a resident or have lived here long enough to earn the “local” moniker, remember to slow down, relax and enjoy yourself. After all, this is Hilton Head Island. Whether the tide is in, out or neverending, if you can’t relax here, you can’t relax anywhere.

Red Fish Keeps Swimming

The enduring allure of one of Hilton Head Island’s favorite spots for delicious wine and inspired cuisine lies in its constant ability to adapt and surprise. BY BARRY KAUFMAN

There are some icons of Hilton Head Island that wove themselves into our community’s tapestry so effortlessly it’s almost hard to remember a time when they weren’t here. The Cross Island Parkway. Compass Rose Park. The splashpad at Coligny Beach. To this list of icons we can definitely add Red Fish. It’s atmospheric blend of approachable coolness, stellar wine list and ever-tempting cuisine set it apart almost from launch day, cementing its status instantly as Hilton Head Island’s go to for a trendy lunch or a sophisticated night out. It may come as a surprise, then, that this venerable institution has only been around for 21 years. That span might be a lifetime for your average island restaurant, but it’s the blink of an eye for an icon. Few know that better than Betsy Trish, who has been there since the beginning. Her job title might tell you she’s the Events Coordinator, but she’s filled every role imaginable at Red Fish from server to bartender to hostess during her tenure. And what she is lately is busy. 12

“I don’t even know if it’s visitors or residents, because we have so many people moving down now,” she said. “And like any restaurant we’ve welcomed them all.” But unlike any restaurant, they’ve welcomed those guests with a staggering wine list that balances a hefty selection against a singularly curated focus on offering the finest varietals available. And that wine list, as Trish points out, changes as regularly as the tides. So what’s hot right now? “Interesting red blends. Going into spring we’re always looking for roses or white wines that will be good for summer, but what always carries us is the reds,” she said. “Sparkling wines have been really popular lately. I think people have a lot to celebrate right now.” It might seem counterintuitive to order a red at a place so renowned for its seafood, but Trish assures us that the old rules of wine no longer have the cachet they used to. “You can absolutely pair a red with seafood. It’s all about taste,” she said. “I think wine has become much more user-friendly. It’s more about what you like to drink.”


And much in the same way that the wine list has evolved over the years, so too has the menu. While the star of the show has always been the seasonal selection of locally caught fish and seafood, each chef has brought their own epicurean influence to the table. “We’ve had a lot of different influences that were more pronounced, from Caribbean to Hawaiian to Asian,” she said. “We’re back to a little more of a Lowcountry feel right now, southern cheese, pimento, grits, that kind of thing.” That Lowcountry aesthetic may declare itself in the fried green tomato special or local shrimp, but that world of influence still echoes in the menu in dishes like the decidedly Asian-inspired signature sea bass. It’s a testament to the overriding ethos that has driven Red Fish since the very beginning. “The owners’ vision has always been about keeping high quality standards for our food. We’ve gotten ridden of a lot of dishes where we knew we couldn’t keep the quality where it needed to be,” she said. Helping maintain those standards is the staff at Red Fish, many of whom like Trish have been there since day one. “It’s like a family. People come to see their favorite server, or they know Chef Melissa is making their favorites that night,” she said. “It’s such a nice place to work. And it’s a great place to go for a night out.” And what would a night out be without unforgettable tunes? Live music has long been a key part of Red Fish’s appeal,

starting out as a weekly special event and then spreading out to dominate the calendar. On Wednesday nights, you can see who’s sitting in with the John Brackett quintet that week, while Friday nights belong to famed pianist Lavon Stevens and Saturday to the angelic voice of singer/songwriter Taylor Kent. “I think it just makes the whole experience fun, and people are looking for that right now,” said Trish. “I think the music, paired with the food and wine, what else could you ask for in a night out?” The answer is nothing. HINOKI ROLLS ON After 21 years, Hilton Head Island’s favorite sushi place still serves up the finest Japanese experience. BY BARRY KAUFMAN

There is a term called moritsuke that comes to mind when you dine at Hinoki. The Japanese art of food arrangement, mortisuke turns every plate into a canvas. Through the seasoned eye of a skilled practitioner, a simple sushi roll becomes a wonder to behold, its interplay of colors, textures and ingredients setting the stage for the flavor that awaits. It’s a term that comes to mind at Hinoki, because within this storied institution they’ve expanded the art of moritsuke to encompass every aspect of the restaurant experience. It begins before you even 16

enter, with the New Orleans Plaza walkway to the door feeling like a trip through a bamboo forest, stone ishigumi gardens peeking between the stalks.

And then you step inside a restaurant brilliantly subdivided into smaller intimate spaces and the grand dining room presided over by a suit of samurai armor and a raised dais of chabudai tables. Through windows to one side you spy the recently revamped walled zen garden, two Japanese maples lending a sense of serene beauty. And then you spy the sushi bar and the real star of the show, Chikara “Chi Chi” Yamagishi. His larger-than-life personality and ever-present smile are worth the price of admission alone. It’s been a complete feast for the


senses, and you haven’t even ordered yet. Once you do, you realize the precise sense of artistry that permeates Hinoki’s atmosphere is just an appetizer for what awaits. Ask for the Hinoki roll and you’ll get a kicked-up maki roll of spicy asparagus tempura. If you’ve brought your appetite, grab the dinosaur egg and indulge in creamy avocado wrapped around spicy tuna. Whether it’s the sushi or something from the teriyaki menu, each bite is a testament to authentic ingredients and masterful preparation. There is an artistry that finds its way into every aspect of the experience. But if you ask Chi Chi, who founded Hinoki with Teruyuki Suzuki 21 years ago, what has kept the restaurant on top for so long, he won’t credit the food. He won’t credit the atmosphere. He’ll credit you, the restaurant’s hungry patrons. “We have a lot of locals, but we also have a lot of people who will come here once a year. But they come every year,” he said. “People will come from Europe, and they’ll come from Beaufort. We appreciate it, so I have to take care of them.” And Hinoki has been taking care of them for a very long time. “It feels like yesterday when we

opened,” said Chi Chi. “But 21 years is a long time. We’ve had young kids grow up here and bring their kids here.” In fact, one of those kids is now carrying Hinoki’s legacy forward. Suzuki’s son Yuta recently came on board as a chef, working in the kitchen. It’s one of several changes the restaurant has undergone in recent years while still feeling like that same familiar place which has brought people back year in and year out. The pandemic naturally shifted some of their priorities, leading them to beef up their carryout station. And they’ve even begun catering. Events like the RBC Heritage and venues like Montage Palmetto Bluff have opened their doors for Hinoki’s road show. There have even been a few special appearances by Chi Chi himself, like the 80th birthday party for a regular who hired him to roll sushi for 30-40 guests. So did Chi Chi bring his famous ukulele? If you ask him, he’ll laugh and tell you he’s still learning. “I’m getting there.” It’s an appeal that goes beyond the food. For 21 years, Hinoki has been a place to revel in the rich culture of Japan and a dedication to making each aspect of the experience perfect. From the journey through the front door to the

Instagram-worthy dish and the flavors you indulge in, it’s a collection of small details done to perfection. It’s an artform called moritsuke, and it helps explain why Hinoki has been the island’s favorite destination for 21 years. . Dedicated to Gene Martin, 1933-2022. , There’s more on the shelves at Piggly Wiggly than just cans of soup and bags of flour. There are memories, decades upon decades of sweet recollections that speak from between each aisle, whispering stories of an island community’s past and of vacation memories. There is a spirit, a tight-knit sense of community that once defined this beach town but can still be found in places like Coligny’s own grocery store. It’s a character all its own, one willed into existence by the vision and selflessness of Gene Martin and carried on by his son David. Founded in the 1960s yet still persisting as the small town around it grew into a thriving oceanfront resort destination par excellence, the Piggly Wiggly reminds us all of the Hilton Head Island we first discovered. Gene Martin passed away just a few months ago, but that spirit of 26

community and of a gathering place amid rows of dry goods and produce that is his legacy endures. “That’s the legacy, I think,” said David. “Being a part of this community.”

FEEDING THE COMMUNITY

Just a week before Gene Martin’s passing, his son David was answering employee questions and hauling boxes in the stockroom at Piggly Wiggly as he had since he was a boy. With his father in hospice, David would leave briefly throughout the day, but other than that he was right there minding the store. It is, after all, what his dad would want him to do. “My dad worked three days ago with terminal cancer, in a wheelchair and on oxygen stocking beach chairs,” said David with a smile. “And he got really feisty on me because I moved something.”

Up until the very end, Gene Martin was a fixture at the store he’d started in the ’60s. Arriving on Hilton Head on business while living in Allendale, he discovered the Louis McKibben’s Red and White Grocery while working for a grocery warehouse. He would eventually buy the Red and White on a handshake, moving his family including a young David to an island that was just then emerging into a new world as a resort. “It was like Disney World to us, coming from Allendale,” said David. During those early years, there wasn’t much to Hilton Head Island beyond Sea Pines and the Forest Beach area. It was in this small town that Gene rechristened the Red and White a Piggly Wiggly, giving a heart to this small community in the process. That heart wasn’t in his store, however. The heart he gave this community was his own.


“In those days, if something happened to the community it happened to all of us,” said David. “One lady would say she wasn’t going to be able to pay for groceries this week. Dad would just say, ‘Pay me when you can.’ His heart from the beginning was to help.” It wasn’t just extending credit to shoppers. Gene Martin gave back every chance he could, the bottom line be damned. When Hurricane David blasted the island, he opened his doors to first responders and told them to help themselves. He provided the concessions for every Gators football game. He’d give food to Deep Well, and pretty much any organization that needed it. Volunteer bagboys from too many youth groups to count plied their trade and raked in their tips. “He probably gave away more than he saved for himself,” said David. “But it was always in his heart, and it wasn’t because he wanted to look good. If it was up to him, he’d never take credit.”

THE COMMUNITY GENE MARTIN CREATED

The immense spirit of charity Gene Martin created and nourished at Piggly Wiggly may ultimately be his most inspiring legacy. But it is far from his only legacy. In giving back to his community, he inadvertently created one as tightly bound as any family. As he walked the stock room, David pointed out that one of his employees got married on that very spot. “That was about 33 years ago, and he still works here.” Even the ones that didn’t stay on at Piggly Wiggly still keep in touch. David finds himself being approached constantly by former employees, some of whom still send Christmas cards. One who had worked for him when she was 14 was teaching a spin class he recently attended. Another, a J1 student from Ukraine who had worked there just a few months ten years ago, recently received a care package from the folks at Coligny in Germany where she had fled the war. And those are just a handful of the thousands of people all over the world who have called Piggly Wiggly their home. “The biggest impact is that from the beginning my dad always hired teenagers because we were seasonal and we weren’t able to carry people all year long,” said David. “All these kids are achievers and they go on to do big things. And we pay them well and teach them responsibility.” It’s what the big box corporate suits at places like Publix would call “corporate culture.” It’s something that just came naturally to the Martins. “One lady complained that our staff was too nice. It made her suspicious,” said David. “I keep that complaint on a wall at my house. She just didn’t get it.” What she didn’t get was that it’s almost impossible to visit Piggly Wiggly and not feel a little bit of that heart, of that spirit, get under your skin. It’s almost impossible to be anything but nice. That’s just the Martin family spirit. It’s what drove Gene to keep tabs open when customers were in need. It’s what led David to continue that giving spirit, opening his doors after Matthew and giving freely to all who need it. “I still enjoy it at 63,” said David. “I have a purpose.”

Going strong for 20 years, Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café is where Hilton Head Island goes to start its day. BY BARRY KAUFMAN

If you’ve ever been to Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café as the dawn patrol is just yawning and stretching to life, you know what it sounds like. The clinking of spoons against coffee cups, the murmur of conversation, the chirps of the early birds angling for a stray crust of toast to go sailing off the wide front porch. It’s a symphony that has started Hilton Head Island’s day every morning for 20 years. As far as island restaurants go, 20 years may as well be an eternity. Co-owner Leslie Stewart would agree with that. 32

“It feels like it’s been forever, and it kind of has,” she said. “It’s been a good 20 years.” Opening the restaurant with her husband Paul (no one calls him that, though. He’s Stew.) Leslie admits that during the early days of the restaurant, no one dreamt that they were creating an institution that the island would come to embrace as its own personal morning ritual. They were just trying to keep the wheels on, metaphorically speaking. “The first day we opened, we did 32 people, and we were in

uncertainty of the pandemic and the nightmare scenario of Hurricane Matthew devastated Palmetto Bay. “When you think about opening a place where you serve bacon, eggs and coffee to fun people and have great time, you don’t think about a hurricane coming through and wiping out the docks,” said Stewart. She credits the new owners with not only rebuilding Palmetto Bay but making sweeping improvements. “In the last 20 years, that’s one thing that has tremendously changed for the better; the fact that the owners of the marina have someone in charge who is responsible and spending the money,” she said, motioning toward the freshly paved parking lot which had once been a minefield of potholes and roots. While the marina ownership has changed, by and large Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café has not. It’s just as much the everpopular hangout it was the day it opened. It’s the people who made it that way that Leslie credits with two decades of success. “It’s the hard work of everyone and the loyalty, not just of the staff but the locals. We have people that come every single day, at the same time every day,” she said. “They’re here to talk and catch up. This is where they spend their morning – it’s great.”

the weeds all day long,” she said. “By that Sunday we served 125 people and we were blown out of the water.” If ever there was a sign that the Stewarts were on to something, that was it. These days, you’ll share a Sunday morning with around 500 of your closest friends at Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café, a fine-tuned experience that has only come after 20 years of what Leslie admits was at times trial and error. “About four years ago we had too many tables and too much going on,” she said. “I could feel the consistency changing. You can’t do that to yourself… bigger is not always better. What you do, you need to consistently do well.” And what they do, they do consistently well. Ask anyone on the island and they’ll tell you that there’s no finer place to enjoy a plate of mouthwatering eggs benedict for breakfast or grab a lunch sandwich piled high with fresh ingredients. They’ll rave about the blueberry French toast or the fried chicken benedict (two items so highly acclaimed they’ve been promoted from special to the regular menu). It took growing too big for them to see it, but with the lessons learned Sunrise Café is now singularly focused on the items that made them famous. “We did dinner for nine months in 2003,” said Leslie with a self-deprecating laugh. “It was tragic. We hung a sign on the door saying we were no longer open for dinner and 100 different people said, ‘We didn’t know you were open for dinner.’” Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café survived their abbreviated tenure as a dinner place, just as they endured the shutdown and

With the Lowcountry’s craft beer scene more expansive and diverse than ever, we tap a keg of summer’s most hotly anticipated local brews. BY BARRY KAUFMAN

Raise a glass, casketeers. Summer has arrived. From old standbys like River Dog and Hilton Head Brewing to new kids on the block like Bluffton’s Lot 9 and the island’s Lincoln + South and Side Hustle, the options for a tasty locally crafted brew have never been more bountiful. And this craft cornucopia comes as summer demands a change from the thick, malty beers of fall to something a little more crisp, light and crushable. We pulled a pint with some of the area’s most celebrated brewmasters to see what’s in the keg for summer.

Hilton Head Brewing Co. If there’s anything bigger than this year’s summer lineup at Hilton Head Brewing Company, it’s the larger-than-life personality of brewmaster Bob Migliaccio. “I have a Belgian table beer that is absolutely devastating. It’s four percent. I’m 40

going to OD on this stuff,” he said with a laugh. Hopefully before that happens, he’ll get to see the release of the sours, goses, Vienna Lager and Dortmunder he has planned for the season. And of course, this summer will see the return of HHBC’s spectacular Mexican lager, “Nine Juan Juan.”

River Dog Brewing Co. This year’s summer brews at River Dog Brewing Co. will run the gamut (and will certainly include the recently award-winning Cirque Du Solera wood aged sour), but head brewer Amelia Keefe says this summer’s brew of the season will be the Edisto Gold. Describing it, Keefe calls it, “an easy-drinking summer quencher brewed with local SC grain & Carolina Gold Rice. The base grain was grown and malted by SC’s first and only malthouse - Palmetto Malt.” Light, refreshing, and crushable is the order of the day.

Lincoln + South Brewing Having just opened this past June, Lincoln + South is bracing themselves for a repeat of their first wild summer. “When we first opened there were just two of us in the taproom and about six beers,” said taproom manager Keith McCool. “Now it’s just making sure we’re ready for the insanity.” The brewery’s signature New England IPAs and Sours are a perfect fit for summer, as was, counterintuitively, their generally fall-friendly Imperial Stout. “We had that last summer and it sold like hot cakes.” Look for a collaboration with Foam Brewery out of Vermont hitting late spring to still be selling in summer. 138 Island Dr, Hilton Head, SC • www.lincolnandsouth.com

Southern Barrel Head brewer Stefan Zurakowski always keeps things interesting, and this year’s summer lineup at Southern Barrel is no different. They’ll be rolling out a Tropical Gose, brewed with mango and watermelon, this year at the taproom and in restaurants around the island. “It’s a light, tart, thirst quencher,” he said. Also out this summer will be the Sunset Shandy that Southern Barrel brews for The Sea Pines Resort, available exclusively behind the guard gate, it’s a light, refreshing beer with load of lemon notes.

Lot 9 Brewing Co. Since it opened a little over a year ago, Lot 9 has unleashed a legion of different and creative beer styles on Bluffton, products of head brewer Walt Trifari’s practiced expertise. This summer’s big signature release will be a hefeweizen that will not only launch alongside a new style of glass, but also with a limited fruit-forward variety. That’s on top of the return of last summer’s mainstays, the One Love wheat beer and the No Slowin’ Down Session IPA. This summer will also see a collaboration between Lot 9 and Side Hustle, a milkshake IPA called Milkstache. Each brewery will work together on the base, then add flavors to make it their own. “We worked on the recipe together. Side Hustle Along with the Milkstache that he developed alongside Trifari, Side Hustle head brewer Lee Holyoak has a lot going on this summer as his brewery prepares for the move into a larger space. “I’m pretty excited for the summer,” he said. The usual seasonal mix of fruited sours and wheat beers will be on tap, but they’ll be joined by a lime-and-citrus-forward rice lager called Island Life. MORNING GLORY HOMESTEAD Faith, Family & Farming BY ALLYSON JONES

Farm to Table is much more than a fad in the Lowcountry. It’s been a way of life for hundreds of years. The sea islands off the coast of South Carolina were once home to thriving antebellum plantations built and maintained by slave labor. In 1861, these wealthy planters abandoned their property following the Civil War Battle of Port Royal. Union forces then established the Headquarters for the Department of the South on Hilton Head Island. Thousands of formerly enslaved African Americans were suddenly free. The Penn School, now known as Penn Center and part of the Reconstruction Era National Park, was established on St. Helena Island in 1862 by Northern missionaries as part of the Port Royal Experiment. This program taught freed men practical skills, independence and selfreliance and enabled them to buy former plantation land at low 44

Thanks to the relative isolation of the sea islands, many families managed to maintain these farms for generations while Gullah, a creole culture and language with West African roots, thrived. When Tony and Belinda Jones met as political science and history majors at South Carolina State University, an Orangeburg HBCU, they had no idea their degrees would eventually be used for farming and sharing St. Helena Island’s Gullah past, present and future. Retiring after a 20-year Army career, the couple was given a 12.4-acre parcel of land on the island which Tony’s father had purchased from a relative in the 1960s. Once part of a plantation, the property had been in the Jones family since Reconstruction, although Tony grew up in Burton near the


Marine Corps Air Station. In the beginning, the homestead was solely used to teach their children sustainability through gardening and animal husbandry. The kids then began actively participating in various 4-H projects and State Fair competitions, raised chickens, hogs and goats, and sold produce and eggs at local farmers markets. The family garden continued to expand over the years and extra produce and eggs were given away to neighbors or sold. The kids grew up and eventually flew the coop, but after attending numerous workshops focusing on regenerative and sustainable agriculture practices, as well as running a commercial farm, Tony and Belinda opened Morning Glory Homestead as a business in 2015. A small orchard with various fruit trees was planted, honeybee hives are maintained onsite, and wildflowers feed the bees and attract native butterflies. Livestock now includes turkeys, pigs, hogs and goats. A variety of organically grown, seasonal and heirloom vegetables – from tomatoes, cucumbers, okra and string beans to kale, squash, salad greens and more – can be ordered online and picked up at the farm or delivered for an additional fee. Fresh eggs from free-range chickens and ducks, plus baked goods and prepared foods such as sweet potato pie, cinnamon rolls, frittatas and quiche, are also available to purchase. Weekly Produce Packages are a pre-paid subscription service and feature a variety of greens and in-season vegetables, eggs, baked goods and fresh meat, when available. Sold in small, medium and large sizes, these produce packages can feed anywhere from two people to seven or more. Morning Glory Homestead also has two campsites rented through Hip Camp and hosts school field trips, classes, working tours of the farm, history tours of St. Helena Island, and special events like Gullah Campfire Dinners with storytelling and guest speakers, a Decoration Day (Memorial Day) Celebration and a Women’s Camping Weekend. Belinda, a former Girl Scout, fondly recalls last year’s camping weekend when women from all walks of life descended on the farm in their tents, campers and RVs with the goal of gaining confidence in their outdoor survival skills. There were farm tours and meals like Lowcountry Boil made over the campfire, foraging for edible plants and mushrooms, sweetgrass basket demonstrations, fishing and crabbing clinics led by Tony and a knot tying class. This year’s Women’s Camping Weekend will be held June 24-26 with classes on handgun safety and a visit to a shooting range, fishing instruction, sharing of Gullah culture, entertainment and an introduction to camping. Although their “retirement” might not be what they envisioned 20 years ago, the Jones family has no complaints about their life in the Lowcountry. “It’s been an interesting adventure, for sure,” says Belinda with a laugh. De-Stress Your Life BY CHRISTY BARONI

Our world is moving at a break-neck speed. With our 24 hour news cycle, social media, postpandemic work life, and ever changing landscape of professional demands, the stress our bodies endure is mindblowing. It’s no wonder people all over the world are blowing up at each other over seemingly small inconveniences. Your body holds stress. Many disciplines from yoga to chiropractors to even your family doctor acknowledge that emotional stress leaves physical remnants. Oftentimes this manifests as tension in your lower back or your jaw. It can lead to headaches or an upset stomach. Longer term and unchecked, stress can lead to heart disease and chronic pain. So during this time of unprecedented external stress, what tools do we have to mitigate the impact? It won’t surprise you at all that the obvious answer is the right one. You are what you eat. A diet high in sugar and processed foods literally shortens your fuse. A recent study by Psychology Today showed that our exposure to fast foods makes us less patient and less willing to delay gratification in other areas of our life. Ask yourself several questions: when was the last time I was at the grocery store? When was the last time I cooked a meal? When was the last time I drank a full glass of water prior to deciding what snack to choose? Creating space for whole and nourishing foods has a direct impact on your ability to stay calm and manage stress. Count to 10. The most powerful response to a stressor is so simple it seems absurd. Simply count backwards from 10 to 1, and pair a deep inhale and exhale with each number. Ten breaths in, ten breaths out. When you inhale, close your eyes

and picture your chest cavity expanding outward (not upward), and work to fill your stomach and entire core with air as well. When you exhale, simply let the breath fall out of your mouth. This type of breathing will instantly slow your heart rate and will help you overcome a knee-jerk response. This practice gives you time to consider your fight-or-flight response and to make a choice versus simply reacting without thought. Move with a purpose. Get outside, get your heartrate up, and raise that body temperature a bit. Exercise can increase levels of endorphins, which are known to provide a sense of well-being and increased resistance to pain. Even a brisk 20 minute walk will give you the benefits of these increased feel-good hormones. As a trainer I often get asked what the ‘best’ form of exercise, and the answer is simple; it’s the one you can and will do consistently. Bottom line, there is something out there for everyone. Spinning, yoga, HIIT, kickboxing, weightlifting, barre, power lifting, there are classes and gyms locally that offer all of these options. Get out there and give them a try until you find the one that is a fit for your lifestyle and your preferences. These simple habits can help you endure a stressful day, week, or season of your life. Lowcountry Celebration Park

Steps from Coligny Beach, Lowcountry Celebration Park opened in December of 2020. Coligny Plaza

The Sandbox, An Interactive Children’s Museum

A place “where children learn to play & play to learn,” The Sandbox has welcomed more than 350,000 local families and out of town visitors since opening in 2005. Recently, this interactive children’s museum moved from its original location to a brand-new building at Lowcountry Celebration Park. A second satellite location was opened in Bluffton’s Tanger 2 Outlets in 2019.
