If you’re a caffeine junkie, you’ll understand what I mean when I say that spring on the island comes in like a double shot of espresso for the soul. For those morning people out there, what that means is that this time of year it feels like there’s adrenaline just floating on the breeze, as the seasonal sense of rebirth settles in across the Lowcountry. Yes, it means the return of visitors, and with them a little more traffic on 278, but it’s only because they’re drawn by this same atmosphere. I don’t know this for certain, but I can say with confidence this feeling doesn’t just come from the warmer weather. It comes from the social calendar, which fills to bursting in the spring. Festivals, events, get togethers… it’s a season that reaffirms why we call this community our own.
One of the biggest events of its kind anywhere on the east coast, the annual Wine and Food Festival serves as the official uncorking to this season. Even if you’re not an oenophile (don’t worry, just a fancy word for wine lover) this celebration of the vine encompasses a full week of events for connoisseurs and casuals alike. I know a few folks who never drink wine, but nevertheless look forward to WineFest for the food and for the Craft Beers by the Beach event.
From there, the season only heats up with a slew of events that make every weekend its own party. But the centerpiece event of the busy spring, as it has been for 57 years, will be the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing. Like WineFest, this is an event that draws people in even if they’ve never played a round of golf in their life. The setting at the atmosphere at the Heritage have been described as “an amazing party with a golf game in the background” and even the elite golfers who come here to play appreciate how laid-back Hilton Head is. Coming right after the grueling competition of The Masters, it’s an event where everyone, even the players, is there to have fun.
As long as you’re out enjoying all the island has to offer this spring, you’re going to want to make an evening out of it and sample some of our local restaurants. You’ll find that spring electricity has recharged our chefs, servers and restaurateurs as well, with outdoor dining opening up and seasonal menu changes ushering in fresh new dishes worth exploring. Whether it’s lunch, dinner or happy hour, you owe it to yourself to see what our restaurants can do when spring’s magic breathes renewed energy into every bite.

In just five years, Chez Georges Bistro & Bar has set itself apart not just for being French, but for being fresh.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMAN
More so than any technique or ingredient, French cooking has always been defined by its deep respect for food. Every dish reflects how the simple act of sitting down to enjoy a meal can be life affirming, how a chef’s ambitions in the kitchen can create art. It’s a state of mind as much as it is a style of cooking. Since opening five years ago, Chez Georges Bistro & Bar has put that philosophy at the core of everything it does.

“You can pull from all of the normal purveyors, but I always wanted to show people that you can do something with really good ingredients and have a menu that’s not the same as

anything else on the island,” said Owner and Executive Chef George Casalicchio. “Whether it’s the dover sole and wagyu beef we had on New Year’s Eve or just the oysters that come in every day, I always makes sure it’s coming from the right people.”
Purveyors like GrowFood Carolina not only give George the elevated quality he’s looking for in his dishes, the seasonal nature of the produce the restaurant gets in from Tuten and other local sources helps establish a sense of place so vital in French cooking.
“We just try to make sure everything’s sustainable and local and fresh when we put it on a plate,” added Casalicchio. “And we’re always trying to find something that not everybody else has on their menu.”
Quarterly menu changes help keep things fresh, giving George a chance to not only work new ingredients into his dishes, but also to prepare them in a way that imparts a local yet global vibe onto the menu. Along with the mainstays - the Beef Bourguignon, the duck two ways, the steak frites – rotating seasonal items like skate wing and lamb pave feel like you’re in a metropolitan bistro tucked away on New Orleans road.
“Not being in a city makes it difficult, but we’re always trying to stay in the mainstream of what’s happening in the wider culinary world,” said Beverage Director Monica Collins. “We’re always making sure we’re on the top of the game.”
It’s a big city viewpoint that Chez Georges has always tempered with price points that are far more provincial.
“We honed that back in a big way on our last menu change.

We just felt like the world is so expensive right now, especially food,” said Collins. “That’s one thing I’ve always respected about George is he doesn’t try to take advantage of guests with the price point. And you don’t go home hungry.”
It’s an approach that Collins has echoed as she has spearheaded the restaurant’s famed beverage program through the last three-and-a-half years. French cuisine demands good wine and thoughtfully curated aperitifs and accompaniments, and Collins has amassed a wine list that never fails to intrigue and delight.
“I’m always updating the wine list to find things that you don’t find at other restaurants or even in the bigger wine stores,” said Collins. “We do a lot of small vineyards and small production wineries that really highlight the food. And you can spend $60 or $200 on a bottle here, so there’s a good variety for people who want to enjoy something with dinner.”
Collins has also amped up the cocktail menu, launching special events to help heighten people’s appreciation for the mixologist’s art. These quarterly classes hone in on a particular spirit, not only giving an education on its history and complexity, but giving you the tools to create your own libations at home.
“We talk a lot about recipes and tools you might need for your home bar. I try to highlight a lot of weird things or things you might not know about that would be a good addition to your home cocktails,” said Collins. “And then George always makes something to go with it. I always offer to let people come behind the bar and try making a cocktail. It’s a lot of fun.”
Along with the quarterly cocktail classes, the biggest change at Chez Georges since it opened has been the addition of lunch

and brunch, expanding the offerings in a way that continues to build each menu and every dish with deep respect for the food. Because that has always been what defines this restaurant. It’s not big city contemporary. It’s not small Southern farm to table. But it’s a bit of both, or as much of either as is required to make that particular dish sing. Because at the moment you sit down to enjoy it, that’s all that matters.
“We have to work a little harder because we’re smaller. We’re a little French, we’re a little Southern. But what we are more than anything is thoughtful,” said Casalicchio.

One of the coolest restaurant spaces on the island gets a cool community vibe in Nala’s Beach Bar & Grill.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMAN
There are a million little decisions that go into choosing a restaurant when dining out. With a big enough group, there are bound to be those who don’t want this dish or that culinary style. Someone will want pizza. Someone else will want pasta. Someone else will want seafood. Then there will be the one intransigent soul in your party who wants somewhere with a good ceviche.
But for many of us, there are really only two requirements that need satisfying. The food needs to be good, and we need to be able to bring our dog. Not only does Nala’s Beach Bar & Grill

satisfy both of those, they’ll have something for each of those picky eaters you’re dining out with.
“We want everyone who has a pet that feels more like a family member to be comfortable here. This is a special place for them,” said Camilo Florido who handles marketing for the restaurant. “But beyond that, we have built a special menu with all different flavors, from traditional wings and hamburgers to pizza and everything is homemade.”
Simply stroll in when the kitchen is gearing up for the lunch rush, smell the bread baking and hear the prep cooks chopping away, and you’ll see for yourself that isn’t just marketing. Nala’s is a true scratch kitchen, helmed by Venezuelan chef Ronnie Gomez

who adds a hint of South American flair to each dish. It’s an intriguing spin on American classics – you’ll find the full gamut of family dining here, refined with handmade care into something a little more elevated.
The American fare sets Nala’s firmly in the realm of the community hangout restaurant built to please a crowd. But if you want to take advantage of the authentic South American techniques on display in the kitchen, you’ll find Chifrijo, Chicharron and Tequenos unlike anything on this side of the continental divide. And that ceviche fan? They’ll definitely want to come along.
“We have the best ceviche, made with this wonderful Peruvian recipe,” said Florido. “We actually just recently had some guests from Peru who tried it and they agreed.”
Those of us who will be bringing our four-legged friends along for the fun know that early morning walks are an essential part of your dog’s day, and Nala’s is bringing that same flair to help you rise and shine with breakfast. Keep it traditional with an array of omelets, steak & eggs, biscuits & gravy, pancakes, waffles and French toast, or enjoy a more South American sunrise with the traditional Costa Rican “Pura Vida” or a birria crepe.
They say every dog has its day, and at Nala’s that day has to be Sunday. Starting at 7 before the Sunday Brunch Buffet opens, the weekly Paws on the Patio lets your pooch enjoy a special-made breakfast of their own. That’s right – if you’re not at Nala’s, there are people out there whose dogs are eating better than you.
“We have a special menu for the puppies, because Nala was that kind of dog that was just part of the neighborhood. She passed away this year and her owner, Sussy Palma, named this place in memory of her,” said Florido.
It was Nala’s spirit of community that drove Palma as she
began planning the restaurant. In the small community of Folly Field, everyone knows everyone else – or at the very least knows their dog. And everyone knew Nala as the kind of dog who never met a stranger. In that spirit, Palma has created a restaurant that welcomes everyone, human or canine. It’s a menu that lets you feel instantly at home, in surroundings that celebrate the beach lifestyle that Nala lived every day of her life.
“Hilton Head Island is one of the best islands in the world for families, and with us being right on the main road and the bike path we have a lot of them come in on bicycles with the kids. We love doing something special for them – right now we have a decorate-your-own-cookie special, but we also let them build their own little pizzas,” said Florido.
And if your idea of a community gathering spot is somewhere to get away from the kids, Nala’s is that as well. Rotating seasonal cocktails give the bartenders a fresh chance with each new menu to flex their creativity, while a solid lineup of local craft beers sets the bar at Nala’s apart. And like any true beach bar, the sun going down simply means the party is starting anew.
“We try to have something special for everyone, with live music during the summer, trivia, music bingo… once a month we’re going to do Nala’s night,” said Florido. “That’s where we bring in a DJ, prepare the place for a party and open all the way until 2 a.m. We want people to be able to come in and find something different every time and just have fun.”

Now fully embracing its 40s, the Hilton Head Wine and Food Festival’s next act uncorks more for the community.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS
PROVIDED

There’s an old saying that life begins at 40. Whether that’s true or something we just say to feel better about getting older, it’s safe to say that the Hilton Head Wine and Food Festival has embraced that ethos fully. After celebrating their 40th anniversary last year, it begins its 40s in earnest with another week-long celebration that continues to set the standard for island events.
Expanding from its original public tasting event as the years have gone
by, the festival runs the full scope of the epicurean spectrum during March. Setting the tone is the kickoff event, Uncorked, on March 19 which sees wine lovers sharing their favorite bottles while meeting new friends and discovering new flavors.
“That’s my favorite event because you get to meet so many new people and there are all sorts of crazy wines you’re trying. People bring in stuff you’ve never heard of and it’s basically a big convention for wine nerds like me,” said organizer Jeff
Gerber. “It’s like we’re throwing a block party and everyone has brought out wines that they’ve been looking for a reason to share. It doesn’t even need to be an expensive bottle, but I’m not saying that people don’t bring those too.”
From there the event bursts into a kaleidoscope of different tastes and treasures, celebrating the full scope of the island’s culinary scene. The Craft Beers at the Beach event on March 22 brings out more than 50 offerings from local and

regional craft breweries at the Westin. On March 25, Sip & Stroll takes guests through a pop-up market of different artists and makers at the Shops at Sea Pines Center. Stay Gold on March 26 puts the spotlight on the Lowcountry’s unique culinary culture, with local offerings paired with Double Gold wines from the international judging competition.
But then it’s on to the one-two punch that has elevated this festival to iconic status: the Grand Tasting on March 27 and the Public Tasting on March 28. Held at Country Club of Hilton Head, the Grand Tasting surrounds guest with elegance as they sample the top wines from the judging competition as well as partner wineries. The next day’s Public Tasting at Celebration Park brings the entire event to a crescendo with more than 250 wines , craft beer, live music and more in a celebratory atmosphere that has become a Hilton Head Island staple.
“Ok, Saturday might actually be my favorite event because then it’s over,” said Gerber with a laugh. “It’s a long week.”
It’s a long week that never lets up, each day offering a new way to broaden your appreciation of the fruits of the vine and the labors of the chef. But there’s more to the Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival than just wine and food. A huge beneficiary of the week, the John & Valerie Curry Educational Scholarship Fund has received $150,000 over the last eight years to help students on the hospitality and tourism tracks.

“That’s something I’m very proud that we’ve been able to expand on. When I came on board in 2015, our scholarship donation was usually between $8-10 thousand a year. Last year it was $25,000,” said Gerber. “This year we’re hoping to top that. A lot of these kids are first generation college students, and that money can make a huge difference to them.”
Some people start slowing down in their 40s. But the Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival seems to be just getting started.
“It’s consistently gotten better for 40 years, and we’ve been able to help the community more and attract more sponsors,” said Gerber. “This will be Publix’s 10th year as a sponsor, the second year for Viking Cruises, and Tanger Outlets came on board last year. I appreciate all of them, because they’ve helped us put more money into our scholarship fund.”
We’ll drink to that.

Seafood lovers can rejoice because soft shell crab season will soon arrive in the Lowcountry. Each spring, blue crabs molt to lose their old, small shell and a new, larger shell is formed. For a small window of time in between, the crabs are soft and smooth and the entire crab can be consumed by diners. Considered a seafood delicacy, soft shell crab season lasts a few short weeks each year.
A local Hilton Head restaurant, Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, sets up an elaborate sea water system to produce fresh soft shell crabs for their diners each spring. Live blue crabs are caught in traps in local saltwater creeks and then are placed in tanks on site at the restaurant. They are meticulously monitored 24 hours a day and seven days a week so that the crabs can be harvested at the perfect moment. It’s a unique process that is relatively new to Hudson’s history.
Andrew Carmines is the owner of Hudson’s and he values high quality seafood for his customers. About a decade ago, Carmines started receiving disappointing feedback from his diners about the quality of soft shell crabs being delivered to his restaurant from commercial operators. “Two out of every ten soft shell crabs that we’d serve, people would say, I don’t like the texture of them,” Carmines said. “They are too papery in consistency like the outer shell had already started to reform. I didn’t like that answer.”
Instead of delivery, Carmines begrudgingly started driving over two hours each day to pick up soft shell crabs to ensure their freshness for his diners. He shared his frustrations with local fisherman Rob Rowe who suggested Hudson’s begin harvesting the crabs at the restaurant to guarantee their freshness the following year.
“Our whole goal was to have soft shell crabs that once you cook them, you can cut them with a spoon,” he said. “We don’t want to do things how it’s always been done, we want to try to find ways to do it better. In order to do that, we have to sometimes do things ourselves.”
Assembling the crab harvesting operation for the first time was a big learning experience. The two men built their own tanks and assembled a pool pump to cycle fresh saltwater from under the restaurant to the tanks. It was a lot of trial and error with the main issue being the tank’s homemade construction. “The crabs would crawl on each other’s backs and jump out of the tanks,” he said. “They were crawling around on the deck because the walls weren’t tall enough.”

Another challenge with harvesting soft shells is they have to be meticulously watched all day and night because each crab molts on a different timeline. The two men alternated night shifts during the first year.
“You don’t sleep, really, because you have to watch them 24/7,” Carmines said.
“You can go to sleep for twenty minutes but you have to set an alarm because you don’t want them to shed and then have the shell harden up a little bit because that happens almost instantly.”

Since the crabs are being monitored and harvested on site, diners can see for themselves how the whole process works. “It’s really hard for people to understand it without seeing it.” he said. “Once they actually see it and you explain it to them, they are blown away.”
Hudson’s features a soft shell crab menu with several different preparations. Soft shell crab Po’ Boys and BLTs are available along with blackened and pan sauteed options. The most popular choice is flash fried to crispy perfection. Soft shell crab meunière is lightly dusted and pan sauteed with a creole meunière sauce, lemon and capers.
The start of soft shell crab season varies year to year based on the water temperatures. In 2025, the season got a late start in mid April due to such a chilly winter but the molting can start as early as the beginning of March. The length of each soft shell season varies, as well, but typically lasts three to five weeks. Once the season ends, diners have to wait a full year for local soft shell crabs.

Spring is the real New Year, right? The weather changes and the resolutions we made in January are getting dusty in the corner, it’s the time when our souls feel ready for change and newness. In that light I thought I would try something different here. Instead of an article deep diving into one fitness or nutrition topic, I thought I’d hit the highlights of the past decade of my experience working with you to hit your goals.
When I was a young woman, I was obsessed with Dear Abby. She would answer questions that covered everything from relationships to faith, neighbor disputes to family feuds. I loved it! My sister and I would pick through her responses and decide what we would do in the Readers shoes. I imagine if Dear Abby had a fitness and nutrition column these are the questions that would come her way.
1. “Do I have to give up carbs?”
Good grief, no. Please don’t cut an entire macronutrient out of your diet. If cutting carbs were the secret to happiness, every person who’s ever tried Atkins would be a supermodel by now. Eat the potato. Maybe don’t eat five potatoes. Moderation, my friends.
2. “Should I take vitamins?”
A multivitamin won’t hurt. But if you’re taking 14 supplements every morning, congratulations, you now have very expensive urine. If you are lacking a particular micronutrient or mineral it’s great to use supplements to manage that, however in the digital age I often see a vitamin get a lot of press just to fall off the radar in a few months. Take what’s right for you, and focus on whole foods to meet your needs.
3. “How much water should I drink?”
Enough that you’re hydrated, but not so much that you’re sprinting to the bathroom every 20 minutes like you’re training for the Bladder Olympics. A good rule of thumb is to drink 8 ounces at the top of every working hour, and another one right

before you eat breakfast and lunch. Once dinner rolls around, limit that intake so your hydration goals don’t interrupt your sleep goals.
4. “What’s the best diet for women over 40?”
The one you can actually stick to without crying. It sounds like a joke, but I am so serious. Usually something Mediterranean-ish: veggies, lean protein, healthy fats, and the occasional glass of wine because… well, because! Prioritize protein and fiber, and remember that you are more than just your diet. Live your life, and let your plate be a reflection of your priorities.
5. “Why am I eating healthy and still not losing weight?”
Because metabolism after 40 is like a grumpy cat — it does what it wants, when it wants, and usually not what you asked for. Sleep, stress, hormones, and muscle matter just as much as food. Weight is often not even the best marker for longevity and wellness. Muscle mass, energy management, and overall wellbeing are far more productive to track.
I hope I was able to capture some of Dear Abby’s honesty and candor. Because honestly, at the end of the day, nutrition doesn’t have to feel like a full-time job. Or a punishment. If you can fill your plate with mostly real food, drink some water, move your body a bit, lift heavy things regularly and keep your sense of humor intact, you’re already doing great. And if all else fails, remember: life is too short to feel sad about salad.

At the entrance to Reilley’s Bar & Grill off Greenwood Drive, a St. Patrick’s Day calendar continuously counts down the days to one of the Island’s biggest and best annual celebrations.
Opened by Tom and Diane Reilley in 1982, this family-owned and operated restaurant renowned for its authentic Boston pub atmosphere and food has been the headquarters of the Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade for more than four decades.
A year after the local landmark opened, Tom Reilley, along with a few friends and family, staged the Island’s first St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The impromptu event featured a few vehicles, including a miniature fire truck complete with a dalmatian. The parade attracted about 30 spectators, as well as a police presence for marching without a permit.
Fast forward 42 years and the Palmetto State’s oldest St. Patrick’s Day Parade attracts up to 40,000 spectators – more than half of the Hilton Head’s permanent population – and was recently named South Carolina’s Best Festival.
Now a committee of nine, chaired by longtime parade volunteer and CRAB Marketing Team member Gabrielle Muething, oversees the massive celebration of all things Irish which closes one side of Pope Avenue to vehicular traffic for several hours on the Sunday afternoon before St. Patrick’s Day.
This year, the 40th Irishfest Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade led by Grand Marshal Diane Reilley – cancelled last year for the first time ever due to the threat of severe weather – is set to step out again from the staging area at Lowcountry Celebration Park on March 15 at 2 p.m.

Around 100 entries, including floats, pipe and drum bands from around the country, leprechauns, marching bands and units from every branch of the armed services, as well as high schools and JROTC, cheerleaders, animal welfare groups, non-profit organizations, local and state dignitaries, celebrity guests, the Oscar Meyer Wiener Mobile, the Planter’s Peanut Nutmobile, the Big Idaho Potato Truck and, often, the Budweiser Clydesdales, will make their way down Pope Avenue, turn left at the Reviewing Stand at the intersection of Office Park Drive and finish at Park Plaza.
The day before the parade, members of the pipe and drum bands have been known to hold an impromptu sunrise concert on Coligny Beach and, after the march, head back to Reilley’s to continue the “Bands, Bagpipes & Beer” celebration. The holiday fun continues at Reilley’s through St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, with a special Irish menu of Green Beer, Corned Beef and Cabbage and Irish Stew served all day accompanied by live music.
While St. Patrick’s Day may be a special time to visit this iconic Island establishment, Reilley’s popularity was built on a foundation of food, fun and hospitality spanning more than 40 years.
Drawn by the warmer weather and beautiful beaches, as well as the warm and welcoming people, Tom and Diane moved to the Island from the Boston area

in February of 1977. The couple brought extensive food and beverage experience to their new Hilton Head Island endeavor when they opened Reilley’s five years after arriving.
“It was very intimidating to open our own restaurant,” declares Diane. “I chose to work in the kitchen as it suited me more than being out front. I made dishes that I personally liked, and researched other items that I thought would fit into an Irish bar atmosphere.”
In 1995, Reilley’s Bar & Grill moved from the former Gallery of Shops across Greenwood Drive to its namesake Plaza with many original menu items – such as Cottage Pie, Fish & Chips, a Rueben with thinly sliced Boar’s Head corned beef on grilled rye with fresh sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing and Corned Beef on Rye sandwich with Diane’s homemade mustard – still available today, in addition to signature steaks, fresh seafood, salads and pub fare.
Patrons now have a choice of dining inside or on the outdoor patio for lunch, Happy Hour, dinner and Sunday Brunch
enjoying a pint of Guinness or other beer, a cocktail or glass of wine while catching all the games on multiple TVs.
Known as much for his community and church involvement – including founding the Hilton Head St. Patrick’s Day and the November Reilley’s Match Play Championship the same year – as his legendary hospitality, Tom Reilley’s legacy lives on through his family after his passing in May of 2025.
Reilley’s Grill & Bar is now part of the CRAB (Coastal Restaurants and Bars) family, which also includes both Crazy Crab locations, The Boardroom, Carolina Crab Company, Fishcamp on Broad Creek, The Old Oyster Factory, Benny’s Coastal Kitchen, Papi Tequila Taco Cantina, Uncle Billy’s Burger Joint and Rosevelta’s Pizza.
All but one of the Reilley’s seven children are partners in the family business with Erin Reilley Booth and her husband Jamie serving as general managers of Reilley’s Bar & Grill.
“It was an honor for my husband and
I to work with my dad for 25 years,” says Erin. “He and my mom created a wonderful place for friends and family to gather. We look forward to carrying on our family’s legacy.”
“On Parade Day, it has become a tradition that some of the pipe and drum bands come to Reilley’s at the end of their performance in the parade,” Jamie adds.
“Tom loved the music and we all love hanging out with the bands. They perform inside and out of the restaurant and outside bar, and often perform together. It is a very moving experience, and some of the bands have honored Reilley’s by presenting us with a drum head – all of which are mounted in the outside bar with pride.”
Family matriarch Diane Reilley was chosen as Grand Marshal of last year’s canceled 40th Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade and is set to lead this year’s do-over. Although she prefers to stay out of the spotlight, her extensive volunteer work with children, animal welfare groups and church missionary

programs, such as PALS, Mustard Seed Communities for Jamaica, the Hilton Head Humane Association and Rogue Rescue, made her the perfect choice as Grand Marshal for this important milestone event.
The 40th Irishfest Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off on to Pope Avenue from Lowcountry Celebration Park on March 15 at 2 p.m. On parade day, The Breeze Trolley will offer one-way trips from USCB Hilton Head to Lowcountry Celebration Park.
