The Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival celebrates 40 years.
Twenty years ago, almost to the day, I sat down to write my very first publisher’s note in the inaugural edition of Taste of Hilton Head. It seems like an eternity, but when I think back to the excitement and anxiety of producing my own magazine for the first time, it brings me right back there.
At the time, it seemed like a pretty substantial leap of faith. There were already numerous publications in our area, but I could see how much more we could be doing to put the spotlight on our many restaurants. With a culinary scene that was quickly gaining attention far beyond our status as a tourist destination, the time was right for an upscale publication squarely focused on food and beverage.
Bringing that concept to reality wasn’t something I did on my own. The first two people I brought on board, graphic designer Kim Bowen and photographer Rob Kaufman, not only guided this magazine into existence but they are still the backbone of this publication. Along the way, we’ve been blessed to work with a stable of truly talented writers including Craig Hysell, Risa McMillan, Allyson Jones and my go-to guy for editing these publisher’s notes, Barry Kaufman.
Each of these individuals have left their mark on this publication, but perhaps no one has played a more important role over these last 20 years of success than the many restaurants who have believed in us. I often think back to one of my first cold calls for the magazine, sitting at my kitchen table, phone in hand, ready to call one of the island’s biggest restaurants. I was literally putting my life in their hands, and the threat of rejection hit me like a ton of bricks.
Thankfully, they spared me a few minutes of their time to hear me share what this magazine could be. And they agreed to be a part of it. Soon after, other restaurants followed, each coming on board and making the next 20 years possible through their support. In that time we’ve grown and evolved, but our dedication to covering the island’s restaurant scene hasn’t changed. If anything, it’s grown stronger as our restaurants flourished and our community of locals and visitors expanded.
Before I go, I’d also like to thank you, the reader, for making us part of your dining experience for the last 20 years. You have played the most crucial role of all, you’re the reason we do this, and I can’t thank you enough for coming back to us year after year. Now enjoy our spring issue, and cheers to 20 years!

In a world where everything you know seems to change with each passing day, we all need a place like Catch 22. You need that familiar seat at your favorite bar to anchor yourself in the maelstrom, that standby dish that you order without fail every time the world seems to be spinning a little too fast. Having endured for 24 years now as an institution on Hilton Head Island, Catch 22 found its niche very early on as that place you go when you just want everything to just feel right.
“We have specials every night and a fresh catch every day. Our steaks are USDA prime and we cut all of our fish in house,” said Penny Duren, who opened the restaurant with her husband Gary in 2001. “We’re still doing everything the same way we have for 24 years.”
That unapologetic consistency has made Catch 22 the kind of place that not only attracts regulars, but quickly converts them to diehard supporters, spreading the word to everyone
who will listen about this tucked-away treasure on New Orleans Road.
“We have such great regulars because we actually like our customers. We love seeing them even if they’re here only once a year,” said Penny. “And we get new people in all the time thanks to them. Literally just today I had a couple come in because the bartender at a wine bar on the south end told them they had to come to Catch 22.”
So what exactly does Catch 22 do that not only hooks new regulars, but keeps them on the line for the long haul? It hits that sweet spot between upscale and approachable. The L. Robert Standfield art on the walls and the rich wood accents of the dining room mark it as fine dining, but the chatter and laughter speak to its appeal as a gathering spot for friends. Its menu exults in high-quality ingredients, fresh seafood and hand-trimmed steaks prepared with a gourmet’s eye toward
exciting flavor combinations. And it delivers all this on the strength of a long-tenured staff who knows what it takes to keep that momentum going.
“It’s not like we’re a stuffy Michelin-starred restaurant, we just serve great food,” said Penny. “It’s comfortable, and its friendly, and it’s not casual. But it’s definitely not stuffy.” In that balancing act, Catch 22 has created something that stands apart in the island’s celebrated restaurant scene. And they have the hardware to prove it.
“We were just awarded the TripAdvisor Best of the Best Award. It’s the first year we’ve ever received it,” said Penny. The award, granted to restaurants who hold a rating among the top 1 percent of the millions of restaurants the website ranks, is a testament to the fact that Catch 22 has a ravenous following. “We didn’t even campaign for it or anything. We didn’t even know until I checked TripAdvisor to see how we were doing.”
It came as a surprise, but it really shouldn’t have. This is a restaurant that seems to occupy a singular place on Hilton Head Island. Formal enough to feel like a special night out, informal enough to serve as your daily neighborhood spot, it’s a vibe all its own.
And for those who have truly made Catch 22 their own, joining Club 22 gives them access to promotions and deals that even the most seasoned regulars might not know about.
“I don’t like bombarding people, so Club 22 is just an email once a month that gets you all of the promotions like buy one get one half off apps and discounts on wine,” said Penny.
As much as consistency has kept Catch 22 among the upper echelon of restaurants, as they enter their 24th year the Durens are looking to make slight tweaks to the menu in 2025.
“A lot of people have their favorites, so when we make any changes to the menu it’s deliberate,” said Penny. “We’re not super aggressive about adding things just for the sake of adding things unless we have a lot of requests. It ultimately comes down to the customers.”
Those same customers who will mold the restaurant’s new menu have given Catch 22 its foundation for the last 24 years. They are the ones who fill that dining room with warm conversation and laughter, the ones who tell their friends to join them in their evangelism for this island institution, and they are the ones who have set Catch 22 among an elite tier of restaurants around the world.
They are the regulars. While Catch 22 may have launched with a dedication to upscale food without the pretense, they are the ones who made it famous. And for the last 24 years, the staff at Catch 22 hasn’t forgotten that. In fact, they’ve created a place that gives those regulars what we all need – a place that just feels like home in a world of constant change. Visit catch22hhi.com to check out the menu and sign up for Club 22.

If you haven’t found your neighborhood pizza spot, we know just where to send you.

Every neighborhood needs that one hole-in-the-wall momand-pop pizza shop. The one where, every time you go in, you see the same people behind the counter. The one where they know your order before you do. The one where, no matter how long the line might get, you’re waiting in it. Because it’s worth it. For the south end of Hilton Head Island, that little local pizza shop is Super Baked Pizza. Owned by Greg and Donna Kessler, the place exudes authentic neighborhood flavor. The front room gives you a view into the kitchen, letting you watch the hand-tossed dough fly and savor the aromas of cheese and toppings bubbling in the oven. The dining room is outside, with the inside offering
just a trio of high-top seats. And the owners are almost always there to greet you.
“We’re a true mom-and-pop shop,” said Donna. “We’re here 95 percent of the time because we care about the product we put out. We’re not going to put something out that isn’t completely fresh.”
That freshness finds its way into everything. The hand-tossed dough is made from scratch, from just a few quality ingredients, and baked to a slice that’s somewhere between a traditional and New York pie. The toppings are chosen fresh.
“Having been here for over five years, you have people come in here who only come once a year when they’re visiting, but they never miss a chance to visit,” said Donna. They just love Super Baked.”
It’s not just visitors, either. “We do a lot of partnerships with locals,” said Greg. He points to the pizzas that Super Baked prepared for Hilton Head Prep’s bonfires and for the holiday parties they’ve catered for local businesses. “I would say we’re open to catering. I mean, to the extent that you can cater pizza, right?”
And while the pizza takes center stage, it’s the wings the Kesslers say are quickly becoming the rising stars. “The wings are bone-in smoked and we have 13 different flavors. They have really taken off,” said Donna. “The pizza was what we first became known for, but then Greg revamped the wings and now we can sell over 400 wings a night in the summer.”
That summer rush is real. Luckily, you’re reading this in the spring, when the locals of Hilton Head Island have the south end to themselves, for the most part. Which means, you can get in and out with a Super Baked Pizza before the visitors come and the line starts stretching out. And even if there is a line, we have three bits of good news: they deliver, they now offer beer, wine and seltzer for sale while you wait, and most importantly: it’s worth the wait.

Consider this your “call to post” for an unforgettable celebration of the best two minutes in sports.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN
The pageantry, the spectacle and the grand traditions behind the Kentucky Derby are a big part of what sets it apart as a sporting event. But if we’re being honest, the real reason this horse race has become such a treasured tradition is the parties. Sure, the Super Bowl party has its appeal, with its light beer and endless Buffalo wings, but the Derby represents a chance to charm your guests with a little bit of class and Southern hospitality.
From the vibrant colors of the jockey’s racing silks to the improbably large hats of the spectators in the stands, it’s an event custom made for spectacle. And unlike the Super Bowl, which requires as much as 60 full minutes of your attention (more if it goes into overtime), the Derby only asks for a two-minute break in the festivities to watch the actual race.
That leaves you with the entire day to eat, drink and put on a champion thoroughbred party. Read on for a few tips on bringing that Bluegrass state flair to your party.
The obvious floral motif for a Kentucky Derby party would be roses, the official flower of the Derby. Create centerpieces or scatter roses for that winner’s circle atmosphere, then complement your flowers with red and white tablecloths, gold accents and napkins bathed in vibrant jockey colors. If you really want to go out, set up a photobooth with a Churchill Downs backdrop and stuff it with props like giant hats, bow ties and silks. You could even add a saddle to the props and see who gets enough mint juleps in them to be the first person ridden for the camera.
The spirit of the Derby lies in its sartorial elegance, so encourage your guests to follow suit. Think Kentucky classics like seersucker suits, flowing dresses, bow ties, and of course hats. This provides a fun opportunity to liven up the festivities
with best dressed contests highlighting the most elegant, most creative, best couples, etc. And of course, no Derby party would be complete without a hat contest. Sure there’s going to be more than one person who goes all out, but you can spread the love around by adding categories like most glamorous, most outsidethe-box and or course, worst hat to have to sit behind.
The mint julep is synonymous with the Kentucky Derby, so set up a make-your-own mint julep bar with a selection of bourbons, mint, simple syrup, ice, and garnishes, plus some ginger ale for the designated drivers (bless them). Not a fan of mint? No problem! There isn’t a Kentuckian on earth who would argue with a bourbon tasting. Procure a few hard-to-find bottles then pair them with dark chocolate, nuts and cheese. Provide eye droppers of water and let your guests try each label with just a drop of water to open up the flavors.
Beyond cocktails, add a little Bluegrass flavor to your party with a few Southern classics, like deviled eggs, pimento cheese sandwiches, cornbread, coleslaw, bourbon balls and fried chicken. Don’t forget the Hot Browns (an open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon and Mornay sauce) and Derby Pie.
Why let the jockeys have all the fun? Encourage guests to bring along some betting money and set up a game of horserace. This fast-paced game sees 11 different “horses” set up along a board, moving along by the role of the dice toward the finish line as the pot grows with each horse that’s scratched. Check out etsy.com for some gorgeous custom-made horserace boards.
You can also keep it a little more informal with a friendly betting pool or a few rounds of Kentucky Derby trivia (check out bit. ly/423pd3l for a handy PDF of questions and facts about the race). And since someone is bound to bring the kids along, keep them occupied with a craft table where they can decorate paper horse cutouts, make their own jockey silks, or design mini Derby hats. At the end of the night, send your guests home with party favors like minibottles of bourbon, horse-shaped cookies, or custom Derby-themed coasters as party favors.

No one wants to fail. Humans don’t set goals where Plan A includes not achieving that goal. However, failure is an inevitable part of life, and is actually a critical if not necessary component of progress. Whether it’s failing to hit a personal best, struggling with consistency, or falling short of your planned outcome, failure is not the end. It’s a stepping stone to greater strength, resilience, and growth—both physically and mentally.
In your fitness life, failure isn’t just about falling short; it’s about pushing boundaries. Muscle growth occurs through a process called hypertrophy, where muscle fibers are broken down and rebuilt stronger. This process is most effectively triggered when you push your muscles to the point of failure—the point where you physically cannot perform another rep with proper form. This deliberate failure is where the magic happens.
1. Redefine Your Limits: Failure shows you where your current capabilities end, giving you a clear target for improvement.
2. Build Mental Toughness: Pushing through discomfort and overcoming setbacks strengthens your resolve and discipline.
3. Learn from Mistakes: Every failed rep or missed goal is an opportunity to analyze what went wrong and either try again or change your approach.
OF FAILURE IN FITNESS
1. Muscular Failure: This occurs when your muscles are completely fatigued during a workout. Training to this point— with proper form and under controlled conditions—is essential for muscle growth. This is where you build new strength!
2. Goal-Oriented Failure: Missing a target can be discouraging, but it’s also a reminder to reassess your training plan and adjust your goals.
3. Lifestyle Slips: Skipping workouts or neglecting nutrition may feel like a failure, but these moments offer valuable lessons about consistency and balance. These moments also show you where you are already strong, and can narrow your focus on a new goal.
Let’s start by accepting that failure is not a reflection of your worth but a necessary moment to reflect and reframe. It is an opportunity that you can run with or run away from. A popular term in psychology right now is ‘growth mindset’ and the underlying concept here is being able to see the places where you can run with and learn from failure. Growth mindset turns setbacks into successful do-overs. In the gym you might ask a Coach or Trainer for help, in life turn to a trusted friend or mentor to help you see how failure can be a stepping stone.
Many professional athletes credit their success to moments of failure. Arnold Schwarzenegger, for example, often speaks about how setbacks in competition and training taught him resilience and fueled his ambition. Fred Smith, the founder of FedEx, has a similar story. He credits his failing grade on a business plan in grad school to helping him refine his idea and create one of the most successful business models in use today.
In closing, failure is not the enemy; it’s a tool. In fitness, as in life, the path to success is rarely linear. Embracing failure is a sign that you’re pushing limits and striving for growth. By learning from your setbacks, adapting your approach, and persevering through challenges, you’ll discover that failure is not just a part of the journey—it’s the fuel that drives it.

Providing inclusive opportunities to connect with one another and the community, Pockets Full of Sunshine has been “making the Lowcountry a sunnier place for people with disabilities” since 2015. When those with special needs complete high school at age 21, they are left without the safety net and support system provided by the school.
Knowing most adults with disabilities are truly exceptional people with unique gifts and talents who each have something to offer their community, Pockets Full of Sunshine was founded by a Beaufort County School District speech therapist, a special education teacher, and the parents of a special needs student who was about to graduate.
The non-profit started small with one or two adults meeting on weekends for crafts in donated office space. Ten years later, the organization now serves over 100 adults with weekly programming in their converted storage unit, a full calendar of social events and community outreach.
“It’s really blossomed,” notes co-founder Laurin Rivers. “Which I just think speaks to the need for services for adults with disabilities.” A yellow, discarded label from a brake fluid cap created by a Detroit company inspired the name and logo for “Pockets Full of Sunshine” and the adults served by the program became known as the “Rays.” The organization rescued thousands of these labels destined for the landfill where they were repurposed and recycled by the Rays into greeting cards, gift tags, magnets and stationery.
“Our weekly programming is mostly arts based,” says Rivers. “A lot of adults really connect working with their hands and that gives us a range of things that all different abilities can take part in. It’s really centered around what we’re involved in or what’s going on in the community.”
“We’ve done mural paintings and created art for The Sandbox which they have on display. We have a screen printing microbusiness, which is also wonderful. It’s very tactile and it’s immediate gratification. Then we take the T-shirts, the tea towels and different things that they’ve printed out in the community.”
Some of the screen printed merchandise and crafts designed by local artists and produced by the Rays are available at area stores, markets and community events, as well as their online shop. Pockets Full of Sunshine also has longstanding partnerships with schools, businesses and various civic and community groups, including the Island Rec. Center, where they utilize some of the adaptive classes, host summer camps for people with disabilities and sell their merchandise and volunteer at special events. For instance, the Rays recently designed a mermaid coming out of an oyster shell for the November Oyster Festival and will spend the entire year filling 35,000 eggs for the Rec. Center’s Easter Eggstravaganza on April 12.
“We have egg stuffing parties with local groups,” says Rivers. “It’s such a great activity for them and it’s also a social activity
because we can work alongside others and talk while stuffing eggs. The adults really enjoy it and it’s full circle because then we go and volunteer at the event.”
In 2019, a partnership with USCB’s Hospitality, Resort and Tourism Management program was important when the Rays’ Peanut Butter Putters were named the Official Cookie of Plaid Nation for the RBC Heritage golf tournament.
On a whim, Pockets Full of Sunshine signed up for the tournament’s cookie contest that year. Rivers dug out an old recipe with about five ingredients and the Rays went to work baking.
“There was a panel of judges and we were up against these home bakers who had made beautiful cookies,” she recalls. “But ours had a lot of heart and we ended up winning! It was great to connect with the tournament further and we were named the PGA Tour’s runner-up for Charity of the Year. All because of the cookies.” After winning, the Rays joined students and professors in USCB’s test kitchen to help bake the 3,000 cookies contracted for the April tournament. Today, they still produce and package hundreds of Peanut Butter Putters for Heritage and other special events throughout the year.
Currently, there is a waitlist for the weekly programming offered by Pockets Full of Sunshine, although social events – such as bowling, pizza baking, movies, ice cream socials, cooking classes, ballroom dancing and more – are offered on a first-come, firstserved basis.
The organization has recently purchased a larger building on Arrow Road which is undergoing renovations. When “Sunshine House” opens in late spring or early summer, there will be more room for participants and more opportunities for the Rays to get out in the community. Plans for the new facility also include an onsite store.
“It’s very fulfilling to me to provide these opportunities and relationships,” Rivers concludes. “The response from the community has been wonderful and we want more of it. If you come to an event where the Rays are, you leave with a really good, happy feeling. They are happy, joyful and full of love. I just think that’s a special thing and we have a special group of people. We need more of that in the world.”
For information on becoming a Ray, volunteering with Pockets Full of Sunshine or purchasing items from the store, visit pocketsfullofsun.org or call (423) 760-2103.

Sometimes the most amazing things can come from humble beginnings. For example, forty years ago in a south end parking lot, the Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival welcomed guests for the first time to sample fare from the island’s burgeoning restaurant scene. Lasting just a few fun-filled hours, that first event was simple and subdued compared to what it would grow into.
“Who would have thought? I don’t think anyone involved thought it would one day expand into a week-long event that brings in $40 million to our community,” said Jeff Gerber, executive director for the Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival.
Running from March 23-29, the 40th iteration of the wildly popular festival will still include that one-day event that started it all, with the public tasting from 12-3 p.m. on the 29th. Having outgrown its original parking lot confines by a wide margin, this event will spread across Lowcountry Celebration Park, with more than 250 wines sourced from around the world, the Sysco Outdoor Gourmet Challenge, a local Craft Beer Garden and representatives from across the island’s culinary scene.
And beyond that public tasting, the festival will fill the week with opportunities to wine and dine. Held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on March 20, the Uncorked event kicks things off with a night where guests bring their own special bottle, sharing both the flavors and the stories behind the wine with friends. From 2-5 p.m. on March 23, Craft Beers at the Beach lets you try out local, regional and national craft labels right at the water’s edge. The Sip & Stroll, from 4-7 p.m. March 26 sees the Shops at Sea Pines Center transformed into an open-air gallery with a pop-up art market and live music pairing nicely with fine wine and local fare. The golden hour Stay Gold: A Lowcountry Wine, Food, and Music Experience from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on March 27 will pair Double Gold wines with Lowcountry cuisine against the backdrop of a gorgeous Lowcountry sunset.
It all comes together at the Grand Tasting, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. March 28 at the Country Club of Hilton Head, where guests can enjoy wines from the international judging competition as well as top labels from the festival’s wine partners amid a setting of pure elegance.
The full week of events is a far cry from the one-day parking lot party, but it reflects an island whose culinary scene has exploded.
“I got to the island in 1999, before so many of the great restaurants we have now opened their doors. There was no Michael Anthony’s, no Ombra, no Red Fish,” said Gerber. “You not only have so much more variety now, you have so much more quality. It’s greatly helped how popular the festival has become.”
Of course, growing the festival to better represent that culinary scene required some help.
“This is the tenth year of Publix serving as a presenting sponsor. That really helped us turn the corner,” added Gerber.
As the event itself has grown, it has also spun off more popular events, like this past year’s Rhythm and Brews, which brought together an expertly curated collection of craft beer and live music from headliner Miles Nielsen & The Rusted Hearts and openers Zach Stevens & Charlie Simpson. In the future, Gerber plans to add an event focused on the “Killer Bs” of wine with five master sommeliers in attendance to educate guest on the complexity of wine.
“The people involved are asking about it, so it’s going to happen, it’s just a question of when,” said Gerber. “I’m excited to get that put together. I don’t think there have ever been five master sommeliers together in one place anywhere in South Carolina.”
Stay tuned for details on that, and in the meantime check out hiltonheadwineandfood.com for the full rundown on this year’s event.

March through May, the Island comes back to life with warm weather, familyfriendly festivals, seasonal celebrations, holiday happenings, art shows and much more. To help you ring in spring, here is a guide to some of the fun and tasty events taking place this season. Be sure to call the listed phone numbers or check out the websites and social media channels to confirm details.
March 15-16, don your green and head to the south end of Hilton Head Island to celebrate the Luck o’ the Irish.
Home of South Carolina’s longest running St. Patrick’s Day Parade, one of the Island’s most popular events began on a rainy day in 1983 when local business icon Tom Reilley, along with a few friends and family members, staged an impromptu procession to celebrate the holiday.
The first parade featured a few vehicles and a miniature fire truck, attracting about 30 spectators, as well as law enforcement for marching without a permit. Four decades later, more than 30,000 people – more than half of the Island’s permanent residents – will line up along Pope Avenue on March 16 to watch hundreds of floats, marching bands, civic and community groups, local dignitaries and animal contingencies march by during the 40th annual event beginning at 2 p.m.
Tom Reilley is still very involved with Irishfest – and his namesake restaurant still serves as a central hub during the event – although he handed off the planning to a committee soon after the parade’s inception. The Parade Committee is also responsible for selecting the Grand Marshal each year, who is named during a February sashing ceremony at Reilley’s Bar & Grill. In 1993,
Reilley himself received this distinguished honor.
In addition to regular appearances from the U.S. Marine Corps Band from Parris Island and the antics of the Shriners, past parades have featured the Budweiser Clydesdales, military flyovers, various celebrities, the Planter’s Peanut Nutmobile, the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile and the Big Idaho Potato Truck, plus pipe and drum bands from across the country competing for a variety of awards.
In 2022, the celebration expanded into a two-day event with a free, Irish Music Concert on Saturday afternoon in Lowcountry Celebration Park. Sponsored by the Tiki Hut and the Beach House Hilton Head Island, this year’s headliner is Celtic folk rock band Syr joined by S.W.I.G. Kirk O’Leary and pipe and drum bands. Bring chairs and/or blankets for the show; food and beverages will be available for purchase. Please leave the coolers and pets at home. Parking is available at Lowcountry Celebration Park.
Arrive early on Sunday to secure your spot along the parade route. The Breeze Trolley will offer one-way trips from 11 a.m.2 p.m. on parade day, picking up at USCB Hilton Head and dropping off near Lowcountry Celebration Park. For details on the 2025 Hilton Head Island Irishfest, visit hiltonheadireland.org, call (855) 287-7287 or check out the stpatricksdayhhi Facebook page.

If wings are your favorite thing, head over to Lowcountry Celebration Park on Saturday, March 22 for the Island Rec. Center’s 28th Annual Wingfest.
The organization’s longest running festival, and brainchild of Special Events Director Joe Cain, features a semi-friendly showdown with two-dozen restaurants and businesses serving up 8,000 pounds of chicken wings while competing for the title of Wing King (or Queen). Other festival foods, popular bands performing throughout the afternoon, activities for kids and alcohol for adults equals plenty of springtime fun for everyone
Stroll around the park and try to spot Cain wearing his signature wing hat purchased directly from the famed Anchor Bar – home of the original Buffalo chicken wing – listen to live music and decide which wings to try first before voting for your favorite. Bounce around in the Kid’s Zone on the bungee jump or climb the rock wall, compete in the Kid’s Wing Bobbing Competition trying to fish out plastic wings hidden in whipped cream or enter the Adult Wing Eating Contest.
Winners of both the Judges’ and People’s Choice Awards will be announced at 4:30 p.m. In 2024, Pool Bar Jim’s took the top spot in the Judge’s vote with Coconutz and Nectar placing second and third, respectively. Enjoy “community theatre in the heart of Hilton Head” with Sea Glass Stage Company in the newly renovated Coligny Theatre.
The mission of Hilton Head Island’s latest community theater company is “to celebrate the power of performing arts by creating a space where passionate artists from our community come together to bring stories to life, engage our audiences, and foster a vibrant arts and educational culture.”
Created to further enrich the community, this non-profit arts organization is already sharing the stage, and spotlight, with Main Stage Community Theatre (MSCT), another local company which has produced over 70 shows on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton since 1997. Last year, MSCT presented “A1940s Radio Christmas Carol” and “Our Town” in Coligny Theatre. Sea Glass Stage Company also offered summer camps and plans to expand its educational enrichment opportunities.
The first show of the year is the groundbreaking, Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Next to Normal” which explores the struggles of a family coping with mental illness, loss, and the relentless search for normalcy, February 21-March 8. Through its powerful rock score and deeply layered characters, it sheds light on the often-hidden pain of mental health battles and the resilience found in love and hope.
May 2-18, Sea Glass Stage Productions presents “The 39 Steps,” an award-winning show perfect for mystery and comedy lovers alike. This fast-paced comedy follows an ordinary man as he’s swept into a whirlwind while hilariously reimagining the classic Hitchcock thriller.
Call (843) 212-4172 or visit sgstage.org for tickets and show information, as well as educational opportunities.
With cute kids, ugly dogs, more than 150 vendors and artists, over 30 food trucks and two stages showcasing local bands, the best way to experience Bluffton’s singular “state of mind” is during Mayfest on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Calhoun and the surrounding streets in Old Town will be blocked off to vehicular traffic for this annual Lowcountry celebration, now in its 47th year. Coordinated by the Rotary Club of Bluffton, Mayfest is always held the day before Mother’s Day and is the perfect place to pick up a gift for someone special.
An eclectic array of artists and artisans, including this year’s featured artist Karen Magill who enjoys working in stained glass, pencil, pen and ink, mixed media, watercolor, gouache, as well as acrylic and oil painting, will be prominently featured in tents along the streets and in Bluffton’s fine art galleries.
Sample the famed shrimp salad sandwiches from the ladies at the Church of the Cross or head over to Martin Park where most of the food trucks and beer tents are located, as well as the Main Stage, for the afternoon Pie Eating Contest and live music
throughout the day. The Ugly Dog Contest is usually held next door at the Heyward House or follow the sounds of live music over to the Bridge Street Stage with its Local Craft Beer Garden. Mayfest admission and parking are free; a free shuttle s ervice is available from Red Cedar and M.C. Riley Elementary Schools on the day of the event. Call (843) 540-7957 or visit blufftonrotary.org for more information.
