Academic Profile 2019-2020 The TASIS School in Dorado, Puerto Rico is a private, non-sectarian, coeducational day school which has English as its language of instruction, with the exception of Spanish, Puerto Rican History and other World Language courses. The school opened for its first academic year in August 2002.

Accreditation
The TASIS School in Dorado is licensed as a private school by the pertinent governmental licensing agency, the “Consejo de Educación de Puerto Rico.” It is also accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and by the “Comisión Acreditadora de Instituciones Educativas” (CADIE). The Middle States Association (MSA) of Colleges and Schools has also awarded TASIS Dorado a Program of Distinction Award for its Early Childhood Education Program (Pre-Pre-Kindergarten through First Grade). TASIS Dorado is the first school to receive this prestigious recognition in the United States.

Student Body
71% of the student body are Puerto Rican, 23% come from the continental United States and 6% from abroad. More than ten different first languages are spoken in the homes of our students. The TASIS School in Dorado seeks to be enriched by multiple, cultural, language, and social exchanges brought about by the integration of all families. Maximum class size is 20 students, with an overall student-teacher ratio of 9 to 1.
Faculty There are 107 full-time faculty, over 53% of whom possess or are in the process of completing a Master’s Degree or Doctorate in education or in their field of specialty.
Curriculum & Special Programs
The TASIS School in Dorado offers a college preparatory program that prepares students for universities and colleges in the United States, Puerto Rico, and worldwide. Students are expected to master skills and content, to become more inquisitive and analytical, to develop research skills, and to organize and present their learning in both verbal and written form. In 2016, we opened an MIT-certified STEAM-focused Fab Lab, equipped with a CNC machine, laser cutter, 3D printers, and scanners.

Students who take AP courses are required to take the corresponding exam upon completion of the course. They are strongly advised to limit their AP course enrollment as follows: 10th grade (1); 11th grade (2); 12th grade (3). Only students in the enriched track would have the option to begin the AP track in 9th grade and, therefore, be likely to exceed the recommended maximum of 6 total AP courses.
Science: 3 credits (in lab sciences) Social Studies: 4 credits Foreign Language or Innovation Science: 2 credits or proficiency Electives: 2 credits, .50 of which must be in Visual or Performing Arts Physical Education: 2 credits Health: .25 credits Community Service: 100 hours in high school are required for graduation. Students may take additional credits. Students will also have acquired technological competence through both our curriculum and our 1-to-1 laptop program. All high school students must complete the Exploration Week Program all four years and at least two semesters of College Education. Exploration Week is a required program for all high school students, offered during the first five days of the second semester. The program has two components: an integrated academic mini-course with emphasis on experiential learning and a service learning opportunity to develop strong character and leadership skills. Students participate in four sessions of their academic seminar and a full day of servicelearning on the last day of the week. Each seminar incorporates a project as a completion requirement. Students are assessed on various aspects of their participation, including effort, attitude, attendance, a response journal and a project for their final grade of Pass or Fail.
Grading System The TASIS School in Dorado does not rank its students. Only grades earned at TASIS Dorado are used to calculate cumulative GPA. Cumulative GPA is calculated using all courses taken during the student’s high school years. Enriched Mathematics courses are those taken a year ahead of the curriculum. These receive a five-point enrichment at the end of each semester. Advanced Placement courses are weighted for the purpose of determining GPA.
GPA Policy | GRADE POINT AVERAGE The TASIS School in Dorado calculates a weighted (adjusted) GPA, which is provided to college and post-graduate institutions. The weighted (adjusted) GPA is on a 4.0 scale and includes all high school level courses. ∙ Credit is a granted for a completed unit of study. ∙ A transcript is a report of final grades and credits indicated by course. ∙ Weighted (adjusted) points are similar to grade points, except that weighted grade points differentiate between regular courses and advanced level courses.

EARNED IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
The TASIS School in Dorado grants graduation credit to middle school students who take high school courses in middle school. These courses must have the same expectations, curriculum, and final exams as the equivalent courses taught in high school. A. The following middle school courses have been identified for high school credit: • Algebra I • Geometry • Physics • World Language Levels I and II (French I, French II, Italian I, etc.) B. Students who pass these courses will automatically be granted high school credit. These grades will be reflected on the student’s high school transcript and included in the cumulative GPA calculation.
