Tasburgh Parish Council, Serving the Village of Tasburgh

Meetings Parish Council meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month in the Committee Room of the Village Hall at 8pm (refreshments available from 7.30pm). Planning Meetings, if required, are usually held on the first Tuesday of the month, in the Village Hall Committee Room at 8pm.

Agendas are posted on the village notice boards and the website at least three days beforehand.

Public are welcome to attend all Parish Council meetings; this is your opportunity to speak or ask questions. Due to Covid-19 restrictions on social distancing some of the meetings below may now be held remotely.

If you wish to access the meeting please email the Clerk who can provide you with an invitation link.

Tasburgh Parish Council Since our last magazine, life has unexpectedly changed for everyone. At the time of writing this we are all still in lockdown, although some measures may have been eased by the time you read this. We know that everyone is facing great uncertainty and fears about the future – for their health, for elderly family members they can no longer visit, about jobs, businesses and income, the challenges of working from home while simultaneously trying to home-school children have been enormous.

However, it is also true that this crisis has brought out the community spirit in many people, and it is this that we would like to celebrate in this issue.

The village COVID-19 support group was up and running in just a few days after lockdown was announced, and we would like to extend our thanks and congratulations to the organisers. If you do need assistance of any sort during this time, details of how to contact the COVID- 19 Group and the Early Help Hub at South Norfolk Council are given later in this magazine.

Many parishioners are outside and clapping for the NHS every Thursday – the social highlight of the week for some streets. As you walk around the village on your daily exercise , it is wonderful to see so many people stopping to talk to each other, from 2 metres away of course, and people putting out free items of books etc.

We have the marvellous mouse trail for the children to follow, a sunflower competition, so many beautiful rainbows and other pictures up in house windows, and even our own resident botanist.

Sadly, many planned events in the village have had to be postponed for this year, including the Open Gardens Day in June, but we are sure that all will bounce back bigger and better next year. Despite restrictions, many of us still celebrated the 75th Anniversary of VE Day on May 8. Several roads held socially-distanced parties, with people having tea and cakes (sometimes possibly alcohol!) at tables on their own front lawns, lots of bunting and 40s music too. Later articles will show how our village groups are continuing to run and connect in lots of innovative ways.

The Parish Council is also continuing to run, we have now held our first few 6

Tasburgh Parish Council meetings virtually and feel that these are running smoothly without too many technological hitches. Details of future meetings will be advertised on Facebook, website and noticeboards. There is still the opportunity for members of the public to participate in our meetings. If you would like to join one, please email our clerk and she will send you the necessary link.

You can join from computer, tablet or phone, and the process is very easy.

Our Annual Parish Meeting has had to be postponed, although we are still hoping to hold it later in the year. The Neighbourhood Plan is also on hold for now, although we have taken the first step by officially notifying South Norfolk District Council of our plans. During this time, we continue to share information using our facebook page and website http://tasburghpc.wixsite.com/tasburghpc which enables us to circulate all of the essential information that we receive from different sources. You can also use the website or our Facebook page to forward comments or questions to the Parish Council.

Keep yourselves safe, continue to look after friends, neighbours and yourselves, and lets look forward to better times to come.

A NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN FOR TASBURGH At the meeting held on 21 April 2020, the Parish Council considered and agreed to accept the proposed recommendation to register the parish boundary and submit a Neighbourhood Plan application to South Norfolk District Council. Details of the Neighbourhood Area can be viewed at South Norfolk Council website at http://southnorfolk.gov.uk/residents/planning/planning-policy/neighbourhood-plans Due to current Covid-19 restrictions we are not in a position to hold the Annual Parish Meeting which will hold up the necessary village-wide consultation. In the meantime, the Steering Group will be able to meet (virtually if necessary) to confirm the terms of reference and work on an action plan and time-line.

Producing a Neighbourhood Plan will take two to three years to reach approved status and if you are interested in contributing to the Working Group please contact the Parish Clerk.

Tasburgh Village Hall Tasburgh Village Hall was opened on the 8th September 1953 by Mrs. Rosemary Hastings. The original building was sixty by twenty-four feet with two small rooms at the rear intended as a kitchen and a committee room.

The Hall had been funded from the Wartime Salvage Fund and from many money raising events from the local community including the saving of pennies by the local schoolchildren. Other villages got involved to, the Norfolk and Suffolk Journal and the Diss Express reports on Friday February 20th, 1953 that “Long Stratton: Panto for the Hall Fund – Children of the Methodist Sunday School gave a further presentation of their play “Goldilocks and the three bears.” At Rainthorpe Hall, in aid of the Tasburgh Village Hall Fund. About £7 was raised”.

Two fields covering about four acres owned by John Everson of Old Hall Farm and his sons Russell and George were kindly gifted and thus the village gained both a playing field and a site for the village hall midway between Upper and Lower Tasburgh.

Since 1953 the Hall has been the community centre of Tasburgh, and although temporarily closed due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the Committee is still working hard behind the scenes to ensure we are ready to open as soon as we can. However, we need your help! We have a vacancy on our Committee, and we are looking for a member of the community to become a Trustee. Just a couple of hours a month and you could make a real difference.

Tasburgh Eurolink Well this will definitely not be my normal report of “business as usual” will it?

Who could have imagined, when we read our Spring Quarterlies, how all our lives would be turned upside down?

As the county celebrates V.E. day on 8th May, our Belgian friends should have been here with us. It would have been the 31st year of our Tasburgh/Linden twinning. We are nothing if not optimistic though, so have not cancelled all our arrangements to entertain them, merely postponed to 2021! On another positive note, as all the arrangements are already in place, and the money in the bank, our committee will have a very easy year ahead.

We have been in touch with our friends in Linden and they are very much in the same situation as us. No-one has been badly affected by this dreadful virus, but are suffering the same worries and restrictions as us.

Our last committee meeting was just before our very successful wine tasting at the end of February, and majority of the committee have since had an online meeting. We will do so again if needed.

I cannot imagine that our summer event, the Safari Supper, will be held as planned on Saturday July 18th. Whatever is allowed in terms of social contact, I don’t think gathering in such large groups in people’s houses will fit the criteria! I can’t see a virtual safari working, so those of you who were really looking forward to the event will just have to fit it in to what will be your very crowded 2021 diaries.

Tasburgh COVID-19 Lockdown Having grown up in Tasburgh I am grateful to be able to bring up my own family in such a fantastic community. When the lockdown was announced, I became very conscious of the vulnerable members of our community and was confident all the residents would join with me to help one another.

I started the Tasburgh Covid 19 response group - and we currently have over 70 volunteers signed up to offer their services to the village. We have worked together with the Early Help Hub at South Norfolk Norfolk District to ensure that when someone in Tasburgh needs assistance, they get the help they need, as soon as possible.

We have had collections for food banks arranged, prescriptions and shopping collected, and..... people have come together (whilst remaining apart) to offer books and children’s toys to each other, among many other items being traded such as plants and gardening materials.

Our children have also been entertained by searching for rainbows and teddy bears in windows, a sunflower growing competition and “Tas Valley Mice - a picture trail”.

We then enjoyed a brilliant VE Day celebration, with many setting up tables in their front gardens to celebrate together whilst still maintaining social distancing measures. Decorations and costumes were very well received!

Even though lockdown may well have been lifted by the time this goes to print, I’m sure that this amazingly friendly, positive, helpful attitude can continue for the foreseeable future. It really does make our village a beautiful place to live.

I would personally like to thank every single person who has offered or delivered help, for everyone who has , I am so proud of our community.

Sadly as I write this, due to the pandemic, our doors are temporarily closed, but I’m sure the children would love you all to hear about some of their learning in the spring term!

We spent time thinking about people from the community who help us.

The children delighted in learning about different occupations in our role play area and during their craft activities: we had architects drawing building plans at the construction site; finger prints being examined by police officers; doctors and nurses working very hard to care for their patients; and our radiologists had several hand X-Rays to examine!

In another topic, children explored their emotions and feelings. They used mirrors to draw their different facial expressions, we shared a range of stories at circle time about feelings and discussed how different situations can change how we feel.

As the days grew warmer, the children worked together to develop the outside area, by decorating and adding pots, pans and spoons onto a new music wall. They enjoyed looking for insects and observing the visitors to our bug hotel. The children also helped staff prepare the raised beds ready for planting.

Science week was very popular with the children. We made oobleck and erupting volcanoes, investigated melting ice and we explored magic milk!

We’ve also had lots of exciting days learning about different events... we had great fun on pancake day – decorating pancakes at snack time, we celebrated Valentine’s Day and it was lovely to see so many children dressed up for World Book Day and so eager to share all of their favourite books. In March, we took part in Red Nose Day and the children raised £18.30 for Comic Relief by selling their red nose cupcakes!

We are looking forward to all being together again soon, and meeting new friends.

Tas Valley Pre-School and Playgroup Session Times (term-time only): Monday to Friday 9am – 12pm Tuesday 12pm – 3pm (Monday 12pm – 3pm: for older children in preparation for starting school)

Funding & Fees: Free Entitlement All 3-4 year olds (and some 2 year olds) are entitled to up to 15 hours of pre-school education per week funded by the Government. The entitlement begins the term after your child’s third birthday.

30 Hours Funded Childcare If you and your partner work, earning at least the equivalent of 16 hours a week at the National Living Wage and less than £100,000 per annum, then you could be entitled to 30 hours per week funded childcare for 38 weeks a year if you have a child aged between 3-4 years.

Tas Valley Pre-school and Playgroup currently open for 21 hours per week.

Funding can be split between two settings. For instance, 21 hours with us and 9 hours with another nursery or childminder.

Fees From September 2020, fees for non-funded sessions are £13.00 per 3 hour session for 2 year olds, and £13.50 per 3 hour session for 3-4 year olds.

1st Tasburgh Sea Scout Group Tasburgh Scout Group is still going strong despite the suspension of face-toface meetings and our planned spring camps. Scouts are known for their resilience and adaptability and in true scouting tradition we have thought of new ways to meet, learn by doing and have fun.

Our youngest members, the Beavers, have a new Facebook group and their leaders are sharing videos with activities to do at home and in the garden; craft projects, scavenger hunts and quizzes. It has been lovely to see the Beavers sharing photos of themselves doing ‘scouty’ stuff at home.

The cubs and scouts have been able to earn new badges aimed at the ‘Scout in the House’ which involve novel and challenging activities that can be done at home. We’ve also had scouts recording wildlife sightings and working on their personal fitness when out for their daily walks. When we resume our face-to-face meetings we are sure we will have lots of badges to give out.

St George’s Day is a special day in the scouting calendar as St George is the patron saint of scouting. Traditionally, on this day scouts meet, renew their promises and celebrate the fantastic things that scouts have done. This year, we moved our celebrations online with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and adult leaders meeting over a video chat and all renewing our promise together, an event repeated across the county and country.

In April, lots of youngsters took part in a world record attempt – the most people taking part in a scout camp at the same time. Our members joined the national #CampatHome, spending a night under canvas in their gardens, in a den in their house or anywhere except their bed. As always, the enthusiasm of the youngsters shone through in the photographs.

Thanks must go to the leadership team for the time and effort they have put into the group in these challenging times. As I write we are working on plans for a virtual VE commemoration and a virtual group camp (at home) and I am certain that scouting will continue to thrive in Tasburgh.

Summer 2020

Since the lockdown began on 23rd of march. One of the things that is keeping a lot of us going is watching the changes in creation and society around us. I’ve been watching leaves change from bud to full leaf; trees blossom; buds come into full flower; and bees and butterflies taking advantage of this abundance. Birdsong has been really noticeable as well: it is hard to be sure whether there is more than usual this year due to decreased human activity, or whether it is more that staying home makes me more likely to pop into the garden and notice. In and around the strangeness and very real loss of lockdown, I am also grateful for these small things that keep me grounded, remind me of God’s goodness and offer hope.

At times I find myself reflecting on what happens after lockdown: I have some big questions around how we ensure that we keep hold of some good habits when we re-engage. Our carbon footprints have been low, with less car use, less planes in the air, less travel. Air quality is improved, and there are all kinds of stories about good neighbourliness and generosity.

For instance, applause for the NHS, helping the poor and most vulnerable and Captain Tom Moore’s 100 Birthday walk in aid of the NHS Charities Together Covid -19 Urgent Appeal. As well, Google searches for "prayer" have surged worldwide and Sunday worship is greater online.

However, lots of questions can’t be answered until we have greater clarity about the timescale and ongoing restrictions when lockdown is eased. That said, it isn’t too early to give prayerful time to noticing what we have appreciated and will want to hold onto when emerging into the new normal. In the meantime, these are a few things that some may like to explore: - Prayerfully notice your reaction to the changes. What is good that we can celebrate and appreciate? What losses are we mourning, whether thinking of loved ones or aspects of our lives? What might we learn of God and God’s ways that we want to remember and keep with us after lockdown?

- The Easter season in nature connect our appreciation of creation with our faith in the God of resurrection hope.

- The blossoming of creation is a much-needed reminder of the goodness of God: May God be with us, bringing us hope in these strange and difficult times.

On a really glorious day this week I spent a very peaceful half hour sitting in Tasburgh churchyard. I really miss our Sunday services and appreciated spending time just thinking about everything in general and nothing in particular. Despite the Covid outbreak we have still managed to have a ZOOM service on Sunday mornings for the whole benefice where people come together "on line" and celebrate each Sunday. It was a real blessing to be able to celebrate Palm Sunday (sadly no Walk of Witness this year) but a beautiful service was enjoyed by all those who managed to cope with the "modern technology). This was followed a week later by a wonderful Easter Sunday celebration of the Resurrection which 58 people managed to connect to, so although we were not able to come together as usual, celebrate we certainly did.

Hopefully we might start to emerge from "lock down" before long. I must say that I have bumped into many of you while taking my daily constitutional around the village and despite what is happening everybody seemed pretty cheerful and were happy to have a 'long distance chat'. Just how many families were out there was staggering!

Prayer for the whole village continues as usual and I look forward to the time when we can open the Church Door every day as usual.

Hethersett & Tas Valley Cricket Club It has been a somewhat strange time for everyone and it’s no different for us at Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club.

The start of restrictions came just at the point whereby all 13 teams were ramping up their preparations for the 2020 season and lockdown on 23rd of March at the point when we would usually start looking forward to our first friendlies. The prospect of any cricket this season looks remote at the moment and with confirmation that the professional season will not commence until 1st July, we are not sure of what if any play will be possible for local clubs. As I write this update, we would have been in the second week of our league season and all teams would have started their campaign. The grounds are looking fantastic at the moment and our team of willing volunteers are continuing to maintain the pitches and facilities ready for when play may recommence, whether that be this season or next.

In common with many local sports clubs, the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak is having an impact on our income. Revenues from membership are down by 50%, sponsorship by 62% and with bar takings not possible to help bolster our funds, we are busy looking at ways to help support the club during this period.

Burrfeld Park Well! What a year so far.

Hopefully you have all managed to keep free of the virus.

Needless to say, we haven’t had a Work Day so far in Burrfeld Park. The Contractor will keep the paths cut, so you can still visit.

When you go through take a look on the grass in front of the pond, the start of a small pebble garden, supporting our NHS workers, if you or your children would like to paint a stone to add to it, that would be lovely to see.

The apple blossom has been good this Spring, so there should be a lot of apples in the Autumn. The spring bulbs did well, but unfortunately the nettles and brambles are now taking over. A slow worm, a frog, woodpecker and a hedgehog have been spotted, also a pair of ducks have been visiting quite a lot, as well as butterflies, rabbits and an odd deer. A patch of Meadow Saxifrage has also appeared. The trees which were planted on the bank in November seem to have taken well. Unfortunately though we haven’t been able to hold our usual Moth Breakfast this year.

We hope that we can sort out a rota, to maintain the area, keeping within the guidelines in the future.

Norfolk Archaelogial Trust NAT (Norfolk Archaeological Trust) has been protecting Norfolk’s history for everyone to enjoy since 1923. NAT purchased the Tasburgh earthworks in 1994 so that it could be taken out of cultivation and put down to grass to protect what remains of the earthworks and below-ground archaeology. NAT now cares for ten monuments across Norfolk which together tell the story of the county’s history over thousands of years. Although our guided tours and school visits across our sites are now temporarily on hold, we are still busily working away behind the scenes on plans and events for the future. We have recently hired a new part-time volunteer co-ordinator, Natalie, who has previously worked for the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service and the National Trust. Natalie is keen to support the teams of volunteers associated with each site and to get the communities more involved.

Healthy Planet - Healthy Communities I hope you and your families are all keeping well during the COVID-19 crisis. It certainly has given me the opportunity to reflect on what really matters and spend time in our parish. Walking almost everyday has given me the opportunity to notice the small things in this lovely warm spring, but I won’t be hoping for another hot summer.

ADAPTING TO HOTTER SUMMERS Hot summers like the summer of 2018 are likely to occur every other year by 2050 as a result of climate breakdown. This is not good news for people like me who’s optimal temperature is about 20°C! It is also not good for our health; heat stress can increase strain on the heart resulting in more heart related illnesses and deaths.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO? Make sure your home is well insulated and that you have blinds or curtains you can close to keep the sun out. This will help your house stay cool.

Increase the amount of shading around your home, think about planting trees, or create a shaded area which will give you somewhere to sit to cool off and keep the local environment cooler. Good small (and wildlife friendly) trees for close to the house include rowan, apple, alderbuckthorn and silver birch. Plant a tree now and it’ll be a good size when climate breakdown really begins to hit hard.

Hard surfaces absorb heat and then radiate it out again at night, this prevents urban areas from cooling down at night. You could think about reducing hard surfaces near to your house by having gravel or lawn instead of paving.

Of course, you should also look at ways you can reduce your carbon footprint. Hotter summers also usually mean drier summers so conserving water is important too.

Tasburgh Allotment Society News from down on the Allotments I often start the Allotment report wondering where we will be by the time this piece is read by you. Normally it involves what the weather might hold for us, but that seems a little further from our thoughts this time. In two days we will hear of the ‘roadmap to winding down of Covid lockdown’, the possible start to getting back to some form of normal life after the strange lifestyle that has been present these past two months. That’s not news I know, but its what’s on my mind as I write, and I can’t ignore it.

As strange as the period has been and continues to be, plants continue to grow, and so it was a welcome Government message, that work on allotments was permitted to continue. Of course, we circulated the official rules and adhered to all the social distancing guidelines. Members having individual plots meant this was no problem. TAS meetings were cancelled though, and then on the same day as the IOC cancelled the Tokyo Olympics, we decided that the Tasburgh Open Gardens 2020 would also have to be a Covid victim. A clash of news items I appreciate, which I hope the Sporting world was not too annoyed with. Much like the Olympics we will also reschedule in the future. Other events that may still fall, but for now remain, include the September Village Fete and so I’ve included the Flower and Produce Show entry classes list for you to consider with fingers crossed.

Watch this space for further updates on such events as The Village Winter Quiz night in November at the Village Hall.

So, life has managed to progress on the plots, and in fact, the allotment site has never looked finer with more spare hours to hand. All plots are looking in great shape, meaning promise of a thrilling Plot Holder of the Year announcement at the Summer’s AGM. However, we are just about to plunge from more than 22 to 9 degrees C overnight this weekend which will hold up some plant development for sure. Also, a couple of frosts this week have just stirred the emerging potatoes a little proving we are not clear of the wintery snaps just yet.

Tasburgh United Charities Tasburgh United Charities have a certain amount of money available each year to use in assisting residents of the Parish who, regardless of age and for whatever reason, find themselves in need of financial help.

We know that in these very difficult times, many of you will be facing great uncertainty as to your futures, and may therefore be experiencing financial difficulties beyond your control. We are only a small charity and have only limited funds, but we would like to stress that we are here for ALL inhabitants of Tasburgh. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you do find yourself in need of help.

Assistance can be given by outright grant towards general expenses, by contribution towards a particular expense, a temporary loan or by purchases of equipment for use. We also consider applications from students over eighteen in full-time education.

Poets Corner LIVING WITH THE VIRUS We’re stuck at home we can’t go out, we’re getting bored to tears. the lawns are cut the hedges trimmed and we’ve blunted all the shears.

We’ve spring cleaned in the kitchen and tidied out the drawers.

How can one drawer hold so much? “And most of it is yours.”

The cupboards have been emptied, but not much thrown away.

“We must keep this, we might need that,” …saved for another day.

The carpets are all hoovered, there’s not a speck of dust.

And next time we go shopping, polish really is a must.

We`re eating lots of salad, good home cooking every day, I know it must be healthy, but I`d love a takeaway!

Every day for exercise, we go out for a walk.

It`s odd that everyone you meet just wants to stop and talk.

Because we can`t get very close, the things we have to say, Are shouted from across the road, or at least six feet away.

We are watching loads of telly, although much of it`s no good, Most of it in normal times, you`d not watch if you could.

The car’s parked in the garage, it`s not been out for days, My golf stuff`s in the garden shed and that’s where it all stays.

We will get back to normal, when we`re over all this strife, But normal may be nothing like our old familiar life.

So until the lockdown`s lifted and social distancing is gone, We`ll go on living separate lives, for the good of everyone.

But when you feel that you`re hard done by, and want to have a moan, Think of all the loved one`s lost, leaving others all alone.

If you think sitting in the garden drinking beer is such a chore, Be thankful that you never had to live all through the war.

As a nation we`ll get through this, losing many on the way, The human race will carry on, to fight another day.

Tasburgh Treats LENTIL AND BEAN CHILLI

For four people and takes about an hour Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2-3 garlic cloves, crushed ½ -1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1 tsp each – paprika, chilli powder, ground cinnamon & cumin 1 red and 1 yellow pepper, chopped 100g dried red split lentil, rinsed 300-500ml vegetable stock (depending on how thick you want the sauce) 400g can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 400g can chick peas, drained and rinsed (cans of mixed beans could substituted) 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato puree 15g coriander, stalks and leaves chopped separately 300g rice, 1 avocado, sliced and lime wedges to serve.

Method Cook the rice according to the instructions on the pack.

Heat oil in large pan and cook onions for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Add the garlic and half the chilli, cook for 2 more minutes.

Stir in the spices, with a splash of water, cook and stir for 2 minutes.

Add the peppers and stir again.

Add the lentils with the stock, kidney beans, chick peas, chopped tomatoes and tomato puree. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 3540 minutes.

Once the veg is tender and liquid reduced, season, adding more chilli if you like.

Stir in the coriander stalks.

Serve the chilli with the rice, avocado and lime wedges, scattering over the coriander leaves to finish. (could swop rice for crusty bread, naan bread, or tacos) Julie Lawrence 36

Tasburgh Carers Group We were very lucky to be able to host our coffee morning before the lockdown occurred. The event was so well supported with donations of wonderful tasty cakes and pastries and fabulous raffle prizes.

Many local people came along to support the event including our supporters, parents watching the football match, and the children once the match ended.

As a team we always enjoy getting together and the bonus of the day is we made nearly ÂŁ200 towards our funds. Many thanks to all who contributed in any way.

As a committee we decided that even though we would not be meeting for a while we would still like to keep in touch with our members. We are making regular phone calls and sending e-mails and look forward to the time when we can meet up again at the village hall.

LONG STRATTON MEDICAL PARTNERSHIP As I write this in early April we are in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic which has impacted hugely on all of our lives. The NHS, indeed the country as a whole, is under a huge strain and at the surgery we have had to significantly change the way we work to keep our patients and ourselves safe. You will be aware that we have shifted our workload to remote working via telephone or video consultation wherever possible and have made practical changes to our working practices to keep people safe when attending for necessary face to face appointments or collecting medications.

We would like to thank our patients for their overwhelming support during this very difficult time. We are all continuing to adapt to rapid changes and by the time you read this I am sure the situation will have changed again. It has been wonderful to receive so many messages of support and thanks. It made such a big difference to staff morale, especially when we were all working during the very early days before and during the lockdown. Thank you to those who have offered practical support for medication deliveries.

We have also received practical help for example provision of masks and protective visors from local school and companies from which we are very grateful.
