Shocked by the death of a close friend in his mid-twenties, Terry asked himself a simple question: "Am I happy?" Ziman is known for her transformative impact across various industries. With more than 20 years of leadership experience, she has a proven record of driving organizational excellence, fostering innovation, and empowering individuals and teams to achieve their full potential.

Ziman’s influence extends far beyond her previous role as the first female chief of police in Aurora, Illinois. As a published author of the memoir Reimagining Blue, she shares insights on leadership, resilience, and the power of optimism, drawing from her extensive experience to inspire professionals across all fields.

MICKEY SMITH, JR. •

Educator, encourager, and musician are just a few of the words used to describe Smith. As a seven-time teacher of the year and recipient of the 2020 GRAMMY Music Educator Award, Smith has inspired both children and adults alike through his unique motivational mixture of music and message. The international keynote speaker and presenter continues to serve as a full-time teacher at The King’s Academy in West Palm Beach, Florida. Through his love for music, Smith blends the roles of educator and entertainer to create a dynamic experience that entertains, educates, and elevates everyone to excellence. Most credit offered during SLI qualifies as Additional Continuing Education. New school board members are required to earn at least 10 hours their first year. Experienced board members must complete a minimum of five hours each year. Below is information about required trainings that will be offered at SLI.

The Board Officer Institute (BOI) is a full-day immersion designed for both experienced and aspiring board officers . Through BOI, you’ll enrich your toolkit and connect with fellow trustees ready to make a difference in the boardroom. Learn about practical parliamentary procedures and effective facilitation skills not found in Roberts’ Rules of Order. Don’t miss this day of growth, networking, and empowerment.

The two-day Texas Trustee Institute (TTI) is the cornerstone for good governance. This immersive experience, specifically designed for first-year trustees, focuses on the board member’s pivotal role in enhancing student outcomes. Insights provided by experienced district leaders will enrich the learning journey. Training components include targeted curriculum, Open Meetings Act , School Law 101, and Policy 101. This collaborative environment fosters meaningful connections and the exchange of ideas.

with Purpose: The Mindset and Mission of Effective School Boards

School boards exist to serve all students, and balancing diverse needs requires a strong moral compass and a unified purpose. Designed to support spouses and partners of both newly elected and veteran school board members, the session will provide practical coping mechanisms to navigate the unique challenges of their partner’s public service. It will address the distinct experiences faced in rural and urban settings, offering tailored strategies to manage stress from the campaign trail through their tenure on the school board.

Somerset ISD’s scorecard incorporates a vision, mission, and priorities that led to the annual development of SMART goals used for leading with mutual accountability. The district will also share insight into how the scorecard aligns with the superintendent’s evaluation.

Key Updates to Your District’s Student Code of Conduct and Handbook

Salon A-B, Third Floor • The Student Code of Conduct serves as the district’s primary guide for student discipline, while the student handbook provides essential information to students and parents on a variety of topics. This year, updates to both the TASB Model Student Code of Conduct and TASB Model Student Handbook reflect important changes from the 89 th Legislative Session, which will take effect in the 2025-26 school year.

Maslow Before Bloom: Systems and Strategies That Drive Student Success

In 2024, Ferris ISD was recognized for exceptional student growth and selected to present at the Model Schools Conference in Washington, D.C., this June. Building Bridges: Launching Collaborative CTE Pathways Through R-PEP

Six rural districts — La Villa, Lasara, Monte Alto, Santa Rosa, and San Perlita ISD s, and Lyford CISD — are partnering to launch shared CTE pathways through TEA’s R-PEP initiative. Leveraging existing resources, trustees formalized the collaboration through a memorandum of understanding and launched a soft start in 2024–25. In this session, they’ll share lessons learned, insights on resource sharing, and strategies for sustaining regional

partnerships that expand career opportunities for students in rural communities.

Trustees must complete this threehour training within 120 days of election or appointment and then every two years. This session focuses on strategic leadership, goal setting, and measuring student success.

2025 TASB Post-Legislative Update

The 89 th Texas Legislative Session is over, and school leaders must now sift through the new laws to see how they will impact their students and schools. In this update, TASB Governmental Relations staff will highlight legislation from this year’s session and how it may affect students, schools, and communities. This seminar satisfies the state requirement that school board members receive an update to changes in the Texas Education Code after a legislative session.

This session is required for experienced board members after each legislative session (every two years) and fulfills the requirement for Update to the Texas Education Code.

We recommend experienced board members attend this required training session.

Terms and Conditions

Payments and Refunds

Registration orders placed online require a credit card payment or a purchase order can be used.

Invoices are mailed on Fridays for registrations paid by purchase order. Please wait until the invoice is received before sending a check payment so that the TASB invoice number can be referenced. Electronic copies of invoices can be emailed upon request.

Refunds for cancelled registrations will be processed in the same manner as the original payment. Credit card refunds will be made within two weeks after the cancellation is submitted. Check refunds will be processed within 30 days after the event.

A balance due will not prevent admittance for any registrant.

Cancellation

A registrant may cancel the registration and receive a refund, less a cancellation fee, if the notification of cancellation is received in writing by TASB at registrar@tasb .org or submitted through the registration system (accessible online through the event registration webpage) at least 14 days before the event. The cancellation fee is $25 for a registration fee of less than $300 and $50 for any registration fee of $300 or more.

After 14 days before the event, no refunds will be provided, but substitutions will be permitted for eligible persons.

No-shows will not be refunded. Registrants or their designee may edit, cancel, or make name substitutions through the registration system, accessible online through the event registration webpage.

If TASB must cancel the event, TASB will refund registrations in full, but will not be responsible for any indirect, special, or consequential damages (including transportation, lodging, and meal costs) sustained by the registrant.
