GUIDELINES FOR USAGE OF NOTA OPTION LOGO ELECTION COMMISSION OF INDIA AUGUST 2015

Š 2015, Election Commission of India, India. Logo for NOTA Option and Guidelines for usage of logo; designed by National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India For, Election Commission of India, Nirvachan Sadan, Ashoka Road, New Delhi, INDIA

The Election Commission of India, in 2013, made provisions in the ballot papers / EVMs for “None of the Above (NOTA) option so that the voters who do not wish to vote for any of the candidates can exercise their right not to vote for any mandate without violation of the secrecy of their decision.

The National Institute of Design (DIPP, Ministry of Commerce & Industry) was commissioned to design a logo for the 'NOTA Option' which can be used on the ballot paper/EVMs as per the regulations. This document contains the guidelines for usage of the logo for NOTA Option. It also specifies certain do's and don'ts pertaining to the usage of the logo. Digital files of the artworks for the reproduction of the logo are also provided in the accompanying CD.

GUIDELINES FOR USAGE OF NOTA Option Logo

LOGO FOR NOTA OPTION

CONCEPT ‘Honest disagreement is often a good sign of progress’ – Mahatma Gandhi. The NOTA option allows a voter to express his or her disagreement with all the available choices of candidates. In this simple and unambiguous logo; a cross, over the list of candidates, depicts the decision of the voter—of not selecting any of the candidates. The cross is a universal sign denoting disapproval. This makes the logo of NOTA option easy to recognise and remember across the breadth of electorate, irrespective of region and literacy levels.

To ensure maximum visibility, it is important that the logo be kept clear of any competing visual element—images, text, other logos etc. There must be adequate clear space surrounding the logo on all four sides.

The clear space on top and bottom is 3 times the thickness of the border of the rectangle; and 10 times the thickness on the left and right side; from the edge of the rectangle as depicted in the diagram above. The artworks in the accompanying CD include this clear space/ safe zone.

EPS is a file format for high quality reproduction that allows the logo to be printed clearly at any size. These are scalable and can be enlarged. Although they may appear jagged or discoloured when viewed on screen, EPS files will print out clearly. A test print is recommended.

Although PNG and JPG files can look fine on your computer monitor, they may print out fuzzy (or pixilated) and often look worse when enlarged. For printing purpose, it is recommended to use scalable vector EPS files (or Adobe Illustrator - AI or Corel Draw CDR files) whenever possible.
