Mick Rock fotografió a Queen por primera vez el 18 de noviembre de 1973, en su gran concierto en el Imperial College de Londres. Mick ya se había ganado una reputación como el inimitable fotógrafo del glam rock por su icónico trabajo con David Bowie, Iggy Pop y Lou Reed. La banda, que se había formado dos años antes, era en gran parte desconocida. Mick Rock first photographed Queen on 18 November 1973, at their breakthrough gig at Imperial College, London. Mick Rock was already establishing a reputation as the inimitable glam rock photographer for his iconic work with David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. The band, who had come together two years previously, were largely unknown. This breakthrough gig opened a lot of people’s eyes, and ears, to the fact that the extraordinary - looking foursome were something special. They were visually stunning and in Freddie Mercury they possessed the most animated front man since Mick Jagger. They also sounded like nothing and no one else. Music writers could usually find some label to stick on a band to describe their sound but with Queen it was different. More than glam and more than rock, Queen were simply Queen.

Freddie Mercury fue uno de los músicos mas importantes del siglo XX. Freddie Mercury was one of the most important musicians of the 20th century. Along with Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor he formed QUEEN: a band that took music beyond preconceived styles, transgressing the labels and all the limits, joining genres as different as rock and opera while building itself as an emblematic group, unique from any rock band that has ever preceded them.

“Queen, The Bohemian Rhapsody by Mick Rock” is the portrait, the photographic record and the selection of images rescued from the most intimate archive of this band, taken by the unparalleled lens of Mick Rock, who gives an account of the beginnings of its history as a musical group and its constant and intense creative search.

En el momento en el que Queen emergía y explotaba como un big-bang de majestuosa creatividad Mick Rock era parte de este acontecimiento como testigo clave y partícipe directo, creando la imagen y la estética, dándole identidad y capturando la intimidad de la banda desde su concepción.

A partir de haber tenido la posibilidad de adentrarme e indagar en el archivo completo de Mick Rock, de descubrir y entrar en contacto con sus negativos, placas de contactos, pruebas de artista y diapositivas, se compone esta muestra, desde el material original e inédito que a su vez constituye la impronta, el legado, el alma de Queen.

Desde un principio, aquella tarde soleada de otoño en 1973 cuando nos conocimos, Queen me dijo que estaban destinados al éxito.

Aún eran completamente desconocidos y yo no tenia idea de como sonaban, entonces me hicieron escuchar el disco “Queen II” y reconocí de una vez de donde venía su confianza.

Esto era algo especial, fue una seducción rápida y muy potente.

Ya estaba preparado para una seria colusión de rock and roll.

Queen told me right up front that they were destined for success, that bright afternoon in the autumn of 1973 when we first met.

Yet they were completely unknown and I hadn’t a clue how they sounded.

Then they played me the Queen II álbum, and I recognized at once whence came their confidence. This was something special. It was a fast and very potent seduction. I was primed for some serious rock’n roll collusion’.

At the moment when Queen emerged and exploded as a big-bang of majestic creativity, Mick Rock was part of this genesis as a key witness and direct participant, creating the image and aesthetics, giving it identity and capturing the intimacy of the band from its conception.

By having the opportunity to explore and study the complete archive of Mick Rock, discovering and handling his negatives, contact sheets, artist proofs and slides, this exhibition is conceived, from the original and unpublished material, which in turn, constitutes the imprint, the legacy, the soul of Queen.

La colaboración de Mick con Freddie, Brian, Roger y John duró hasta el final de 1975. Durante este tiempo creó las icónicas tapas de álbumes como “Queen” y “Sheer Heart Attack” (“Ataque directo al corazón”). Mick’s collaboration with Freddie, Brian, Roger and John lasted until the end of 1975. During this time he created the iconic album covers for Queen and Sheer Heart Attack. He shot several group studio sessions, conducted solo shoots with Freddie and Roger both at home and in the studio, as well as photographing behind the scenes at parties, live performances and recording studios.

This exhibition and its catalog bring together a selection of Mick Rock’s photographs of the band taken at the beginning of its history.
