Outdoor learning at Utkinton Pupils at Utkinton St Paul’s Primary School recently opened their own community garden within the grounds of the school. Part-funded by a grant from the Co-op group, which was organised through the school PTA, the garden will provide opportunities for unique outdoor learning opportunities for all the children, as well as offering

the local community opportunity to support the school. The garden was designed by children in Year 5/6, who were on-hand to cut the tape at the opening. Senior teacher Gareth Coyne said: “Our school places a real focus on providing opportunities for learning outside the classroom and the garden

will help bring learning to life for our children. We would like to thank the Coop group and the school PTA for helping make this happen.” Anyone wishing to view the garden and the school in general can so at their Open Morning on Friday 26th September from 9.30 – 11.30am.

Kelvin joins the creative team after working at Michelin-starred Simon Radley at The Chester Grosvenor and gaining Rosettes at Peterstone Court Hotel, in mid Wales. His appointment follows hot on the heels of the company having recently secured exclusive contracts with The 2014 Bolesworth International and Cheshire’s Tatton Park Wedding Show.

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Planning Applications While both planning applications for 18 houses off Birch Heath Road and for 28 houses on the land at the rear of 32 and 32a High St, were refused recently by CWaC’s planning committee, the developer for the Birch Heath Road site has submitted another application. This time it’s for 15 houses of a different design, but with no change to the road layout. Because this is a new application (No. 14/03268/FUL), the comments made about the previous application are not taken forward for consideration. So if you want to make any comments you need to submit them again as soon as possible to CWaC, either in writing, (Planning Dept., CWaC, Wyvern House, Winsford CW7 1AH); via the CWaC web site; or to planning@ cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk. At the time of writing we are expecting the developer to submit a new application for the land at the rear of 32 and 32a High St. (the Daffodil Field). We expect there to be a change in the house design, and that the public open space, in the previous application, from the High St to the fields beyond, will be retained. However we understand that there is an offer on the table for the developer to provide an extension to the public car park behind the Rising Sun for another 30 – 35 spaces (an increase of about 30%) in place of the 8 affordable homes, if there is community support for the idea. When the developer has submitted their application to CWaC, watch out for details about how the Parish Council will seek your views on this matter. We need to know how people feel about trying to increase the car parking facilities in the centre of the village in this way. We certainly know from the results of last year’s Neighbourhood Plan Questionnaire that people consider the lack of parking in the village a serious issue, and one which adversely affects our High Street shops and services.

Some dates for your diary l Tarporley Village Open Show this year is on Saturday 30th Aug from 2.30pm. Run by Tarporley Royal British Legion Allotments Holders in the Royal British Legion Hall. All welcome. Staging of entries, which is open to everyone to submit, is from 9am – 12 noon. Enquiries Tel 01829 730010. l Tarporley High School’s 6th Form College are inviting the older members of our community to a free coffee morning on Tuesday 23rd Sept. in the 6th Form Common Room from 10 am – 12 noon. Just come along and meet the students. l On Friday 5th Sept. the fortnightly GoOnLine sessions, run by a local charity RCS, are starting up again, at 10 -12 noon at the Community Centre. Volunteers provide 1 to 1 support to enable older people to learn how to access the internet; to gain confidence to surf the web, or get in touch with friends and family through Skype or Facetime. People can use the charity’s equipment at no cost or bring their own (laptops, tablets). Enquiries Tel Carol 07851 253 587 or email Goonline@rcswc.org.uk

Have you done something new since you retired? Started a new hobby or interest, joined a club or planned an event or trip? The Laterlife Challenge is looking for entries from the over 60s to demonstrate how people are making the most of their retirement years. There are some great prizes and also the knowledge that your story may help inspire others who are finding their senior years lonely or difficult. Find out more by visiting: www.laterlife.com/challenge The closing date is 30th Sept. When the Parish Council received information about this challenge there had been no nominations from Cheshire.

The Parish Council meets in the Committee Room of the Community Centre at 7 pm on the second Monday of each month, with the exception of August. Meetings are open to the public, and start with an Open Forum session, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. Also the Parish Council holds a surgery at 6.30 pm prior to each Parish Council meeting when members of the public are welcome to discuss matters with councillors on an informal basis.

Look up....

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!

Install a loft ladder and make more use of your loft!

Last month I introduced you to Bill and Carol, my imaginary family, with actual real life financial planning solutions which I’ve put into place for my clients over the years. Bill and Carol had a number of savings and investment products, which they originally took out through their High Street Banks, some years ago. Although they had joint bank accounts with the same organisation, they also had individual accounts with different banks, and as a result of this their investments tended to be with different providers, depending upon who their bank was linked to at the time. From time to time they would be invited into their respective branches to discuss their accounts and to see if they could invest further sums. They actually didn’t mind this too much at first as they felt that at least someone was looking after their investments and if they had any queries they could call in and usually someone would be available who could answer any questions they had. In actual fact, as time went on, most occasions they visited their branch they were asked to see an adviser about their accounts or investments. Change however, was in the air and gradually the banks they were using took the decision not to offer financial planning advice, including advice on investments already put in place for their customers. Carol and Bill were rather bewildered when they went into their bank one day to discuss an ISA they held, and were told that the bank no longer offered advice regarding their investments, and directed them to a website or a call centre number if they wanted further information. Although far from happy about this turn of events, they did in fact telephone the call centre number, only to be told that they could only be given generic information, and that they should find a Financial Adviser if they actually wanted advice. Their situation isn’t unique, far from it. Carol and Bill actually want ongoing financial planning advice, they want to make sure that the investments they have are

still appropriate to their circumstances and tax situation. If they need to access their longer term savings, they want to know what the tax implications may be and how changes, announced each year in the Chancellors budget, might affect them. They wanted to understand how their non pension savings might positively impact their retirement plans, and if they drew out the investment bond (set up for them by their bank) say for Sarah’s wedding one day, what was this thing called a “chargeable event”! Many of us, at some point, have taken out an investment because our bank recommended it, and let’s be honest, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Carol and Bill are no exception, but were understandably upset when to them at least, their bank seemed no longer interested in them or their investments. Investments should be reviewed regularly to see how they fit into the bigger picture of financial planning, for example Carol and Bill’s parents have quite large ISA portfolio’s which are extremely tax efficient for them now, but one day could attract inheritance tax at 40% upon their death. That’s a story for another day however, for now, if you have found yourself in a similar position to Carol and Bill and would like to talk through how I can help, without obligation, please contact my office on 01948 840728 or 07595 928907. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested. Equities do not have the security of capital which is characteristic of a deposit with a bank or building society, as the value & income may fall as well as rise. Although the following case studies relate to actual examples, the names and figures have been changed for confidentiality purposes.

For further details, without obligation, please contact my office on 01948 840738 or 0759 5928907. We look forward to hearing from you. Is the Gym really the best pl For the last two decades we have attended the gym, lured by the promise of better bodies, but should the gym be our default choice when we want to see results? Do You Get Real, Sustainable Results from Going to the Gym? Gyms offer high-energy fitness classes, endless exercise machines, swimming pools, and saunas, all of which look impressive. However, they are not the best environments for achieving results. If you want to look and feel your best, Personal Training Studios are the perfect option. They provide individually tailored fitness and nutrition coaching combined with personal, expert attention. With modern life busier than ever, there is a real desire from many people to ensure that their workouts are as efficient as possible so that more is achieved in less time. For this to happen workouts must be individually tailored to each person. A Personal Training Studio provides workouts that are targeted to what each person wants and needs. Many people attend the gym and only ever perform the same few exercises or use the same pieces of equipment. These are normally exercises they are comfortable with. This is when the professional approach and expertise of a Personal Training Studio really comes into its own. With professional coaching you will learn exciting new exercises that add variety to your exercise regime. The key to developing enthusiasm for anything is learning more about it. Personal Training Studios help you learn new exercise techniques safely, whilst you don’t have to worry about looking silly or doing it wrong. If you find something you really enjoy doing, the results will come because you will keep it up. You Are a Product of Your Environment – Choose Yours Wisely The attitudes of people you spend time with and around have a massive impact on what you achieve. When you walk into a gym, you have no control over the habits and attitudes of others. Some people just want to turn up to the gym and sit on a piece of

equipment whilst using their phone. This is not helpful when you are trying to push yourself to achieve results. In stark contrast to gyms, everyone at a Personal Training Studio is working towards achieving results. The attitudes of others rub off on you, and you in turn achieve even better results. Personal Training Studios offer a private, supportive and friendly environment, where everyone knows your name and are ready to help you succeed. Fitness is Only Half the Story A key reason that gyms are not the best place to get results is that they offer only part of the solution. In order to achieve body transformation results, you must pay attention to nutrition and lifestyle as well as working out. Personal Training Studios offer the complete solution by offering nutrition and lifestyle coaching along with fitness sessions. Due to their personal nature, studios are in a position to educate their clients on nutrition and lifestyle factors. Nutrition coaching involves helping clients to develop habits, which make eating healthily easy. If You’re Not Assessing You’re Guessing! Gyms rarely perform detailed assessment of their clients. Without detailed assessments, it’s impossible to design an individually tailored fitness and nutrition programme, which is necessary for results. Personal Training Studios use regular assessments to individually tailor the client’s programme. Reassessments are used to measure progress, allowing for adjustments to be made to the client’s programme if necessary. Regular nutrition assessments allow for eating habits to be monitored and improved. Are You Being Held Accountable and Supported? We all have struggles and hiccups when following a new fitness and nutrition regime, therefore having support of an expert and being held accountable are vital to achieving sustainable results. Far too often, gym goers miss out on these two critical components of success.

place to achieve results? By Daniel Jones BSc, Instinct Wellness If there is nobody holding you accountable it is much easier to miss planned workouts or to let your good nutrition habits fall apart. But by being in close contact with each client, Personal Training Studios are able to provide the support and advice that helps clients get back on track as quickly as possible. With scheduled workouts and regular assessments, clients are kept accountable and therefore achieve greater success. Joining a Personal Training Studio ensures you are supported and held accountable like never before. How to Decide Between the Gym or a Personal Training Studio Some people enjoy being able to do their own thing and get on with it, and for these people the traditional gym is unquestionably appropriate.

However, if you want to be as efficient as possible with your time, and achieve results that change the way you look and feel, Personal Training Studios are the best option. You must ask yourself the question – “what do I want to achieve?” With our lives busier than ever, and the pressure to look good, combined with a greater awareness of the importance of health, results matter. Key Benefits of Personal Training Studios: • Accountability and support • Individually tailored nutrition advice • Individually tailored fitness programmes • Personal attention from an expert • A friendly atmosphere where everyone knows your name • Private environment focused on helping you achieve your goals

The age of the aged Now in our 46th year of providing care in the home, we have gained a wealth of experience in caring for the elderly, from companion housekeepers to more specialist live in care. Conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s or lack of mobility can be extremely demanding on family and friends and require a great deal of personal involvement and sensitivity. We like to get to know you and your family to ensure that the carer who comes to you will be a perfect fit. We passionately believe that with the right care and support, many people who would have had to move into a care home can remain living in their own home, even when life becomes very difficult.

Continue to live as independently as possible

As we recently remembered the start of the First World War, I was struck by

the re-run of the documentary about Henry Allingham. He lived across three centuries to the ripe old age of 112. It was only in the last 3 years of his life that he went into a care home. There are many people today still living at home well into their 90s. Post war generations are fiercely independent and find it hard to accept that they may need some extra help in order to remain living at home. We must be considerate and respect their privacy and determination. We must ensure that the home care is flexible to meet their needs and lifestyle. We cannot be intrusive or change their ways. If you want to continue living as independently as possible in your own home: • Our dedicated team of home carers have a wide range of experience. • They can look after your loved ones who may be suffering from a wide range of debilitating or distressing illnesses.

B ec o m ‘B u n e If you a b u ry C a r e a re expe r rienced at H o m e’ elderly in look people ing afte ,w our we r ll respe e want you to cted te am of c join a r e rs. •

Most have specific knowledge in specialist fields such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, dementia, multiple sclerosis (MS), depression, cancer, osteoporosis and other challenging conditions. • We will provide you with carefully chosen carers who understand your needs on a regular basis. If you want to know more about how we can help you care for your loved ones and how to manage the cost of the care fees call us on 01829 730201. 2014 is the year for change Sarah Green – Director

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & S 100 years and still remembering Tarporley High School commemorated the centennial anniversary since the start of World War One with themed lessons and learning. There were activities in lessons across all years. In MFL, students watched a film (that was spoken in several different languages)

which retold the story of the Christmas Truce. The soldiers sung carols and hymns together on Christmas Eve, then played football the following day. This event was re-enacted in PE lessons. In Music there were wartime songs that were composed to keep up morale and Mrs Grimshaw gave a personal account of the war about her Great Uncle Tom Mottershead who was awarded the VC for his bravery. In History, the year 8s learnt about the nature of trench warfare through the means of an active learning task in which they created their own trenches and threw paper balls at the opposing side. Some students choose to stay in their trenches only to learn that in reality this would have been resulted in them being shot at dawn for cowardice. All years were involved in this

week and in A-level Psychology, students examined the effects of shell shock and were able to have a meaningful debate in which students from both History and Psychology groups discussed the stigma of mental illness. Students in Science explored the key discoveries and advancements that were made during the war. In English students wrote letters about the war for an unknown soldier inspired by the statue of a soldier a Paddington Street station in London. There will be a National Archive for this and a selection of letters will be sent from Tarporley students. Students were given opportunity outside of lessons to further develop their knowledge. In the Year 8 Curriculum challenge students were asked to create a memory box for someone who would have fought in the war. Jacob Dale explained the interrogation methods used in the war. An inter-tutor quiz was carried out by

our gifted and talented students as well. All of the students recognised that although they had fun during the week, the main reason behind it was to remember those who fought and lost their lives during the Great War, 19141918. Written by Daisy King (Year 9), Charlotte Grundy (Year 11) and Megan Latham (Year 11)

Language becomes ‘Crystal’ clear English Language sixth form students from Tarporley were invited for a lecture by the ‘Godfather of Linguistics’ David Crystal. The language expert, and author of seminal texts such as ‘Words, Words, Words’, ‘Listen to your Child’ and the linguistics bible that is ‘The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of the English Language’ took us on a journey through the entirety of the English Language in just over two hours!

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett

Q. Can you advise me on the order in which I should use serums, sunscreen and moisturisers please?

Q. My daughter has started to use makeup and is now getting a lot of breakouts. Is this a coincidence or is it due to the makeup?

A. It can be confusing with the different array of skin care products that are available now, and the myriad of different names for the same type of product can make it even more bewildering to know which product to put on first! Generally, a booster, serum or any other product that has a high concentration of active ingredients is the first product you should apply to your skin.

A. It could possibly be a coincidence as the time that girls start wearing makeup is often around the time of puberty when hormone changes can cause skin breakouts. However, some makeup products contain ingredients that are particularly likely to cause cosmetic acne. Any ingredients with ‘myristate’ for example, isopropyl myristate, are known to increase the likelihood of blackheads and breakouts. F,D& C dyes used to colour cosmetics can also cause problems as can other ingredients. Obviously, the best test to see if it is the makeup that is causing the problem is to stop using making for a few weeks to see if this improves the condition.

Some concentrated products may only need to be applied in specific areas for example, to areas of excessive dehydration or sensitivity. This should be followed by your moisturiser and the finally sunscreen or sunblock. Make-up or foundation base can be applied over your sunscreen.

However, if this proves impossible switch to a mineral brand, but avoid mineral products containing bismuth oxychloride as this ingredient also has the potential to cause skin problems. Thorough removal of makeup will also be essential and seek skin analysis from an expert if things do not improve.

Muddy fun

Knights and princesses At the end of an exciting Castles topic children at Tarporley Primary School had a very special day where they dressed as knights, princesses, dragons, wizards and fairies. They had the opportunity to become real knights by having sword fights and shooting a bow and arrow. They got so good that we nearly lost an arrow as it travelled right across the field to the pond!

Tarporley Primary School celebrated International Mud Day (yes it`s true) and the children had a fantastic sensory experience outdoors wallowing in mud, clay, paint, water and gloop. They truly relished the opportunity to get dirty while at the same time experimenting with coloured paint by mixing colours with their hands and doing large pieces of art on the fence, making clay models, mixing soil and water to make mud and building a mini wattle and daub house.

Beauty Salon & CACI Clinic Skin Deep opened in February 1991. Owner Stepanie Humphreys trained at Bretlands Beauty Centre, in kent, in 1985 and then worked in salons as a beauty therapist and later for Clarins on their promotion team. Stepanie previously travelled the world working for the examination board Cibtac, testing students on their final exams but she has given this up due to being so busy in the salon. There are also three fully-qualified beauty therapists working with Stepanie, who all have CiBTAC and CiDeSCO qualifications. The salon works to a very high standard, which has led to recognition by the Cidesco institute. The award was based on the standard of work, hygiene, quality of staff and up-to-date equipment. Skin Deep was also given the highly prestigious Clarins Gold Award status. How Tarvin would have looked in 1860 A new panel details how a small area close to the centre of Tarvin would have looked 150 years ago including an area for stray animals, a water feature and also a small prison built to house criminals overnight. The project involved Tarvin Parish Council, local groups, residents and local Cheshire West and Chester Councillor Hugo Deynem. Located in the village on Church Street, the pinfold has been archaeologically investigated and sympathetically restored by Tarvin Parish Council, Tarvin Civic Trust and Tarvin Local History Group. Through an artist’s impression, the panel depicts how the scene may have looked 150 years ago when there was also a Well and Roundhouse - a small stone built prison used to house criminals overnight, and explains the history of the Pinfold site. Pinfolds date from the Medieval period and by the 16th century would have been found in most villages and were used to house animals straying from their owner’s land. The animals would be kept until a fine had been paid. Tarvin Parish Council discovered it owned a piece of land with some history, when it decided to tidy up a small piece of derelict land, on which stood an old shed, near to the village centre. The Parish Council funded the clearance and New wedding venue The finishing touches are currently being made to a new wedding and entertainment venues at Curdlands Burn, in Burwardsley.

renovation and is grateful to several volunteers who put in many hours over three years to finish the project. Tarvin and Kelsall councillor Hugo Deynem approved a grant from his Member Budget which covered the cost of the interpretation panel. He said: “The interpretation panel at Tarvin Pinfold has already proved popular with residents and visitors alike and I am pleased to have helped the Tarvin community display a snapshot of their rich local history.” Tarvin parish councillor Roger Hones, who led the project, added: “I am pleased that the Parish Council had the confidence to see this restoration through. The pinfold with its interpretation is now a new and permanent feature in the village and is a great talking point.” Mark Wyatt - Tarvin Civic Trust, Roger Hones - Tarvin Parish Councillor, Tony Bland - Tarvin Local History Group, Councillor Hugo Deynem - Cheshire West and Chester Council, Councillor Stuart Parker - Cheshire West and Chester Council, Phil Miles - Tarvin Parish Councillor, Jane Hebblewhite - Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Senior Archaeologist and Pete Maiden - Tarvin resident.

The venue is the brainchild of Tattenhall man David Thompson who was looking for an unforgettable venue for his daughter’s wedding. Opening in September,

Curdlands Barn on the Bolesworth Estate combines old world charm and contemporary design as well as stunning views over the Cheshire plain.

BUNBURY NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Bunbury Parish Council has appointed a Steering Group to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan for the village and each household will shortly receive a leaflet outlining the process and timescales for the production of the Plan. A questionnaire will be posted through each household’s letter box early in September and a public consultation event will be held in the Autumn. Once approved it will be considered as part of the planning process. It is very important that all parishioners have their say in the future of Bunbury and the Steering Group are keen to hear their views. The plan is an important document different to and separate from the recently published Parish Plan, it will become a statutory planning document and all new developments in the parish will be assessed against its policies.

Tarporley karters sprint to national success A strong Tarporley Karting Team (TKT) took part in the Natska Kart Sprint Finals at the Whilton Mill Race Circuit in Northamptonshire. As well as the event being the National Schools Karting Association season finale it’s also a time for some socialising. It’s also, sadly, a time to say goodbye to some of the older competitors who retire from schools karting as they reach their 18th birthdays. Here are the finishing positions of the TKT competitors: In Raket Class 14, from a grid of 8 TKT took the top two positions with Kurt Roberts finishing 1st just ahead of teammate Theo Hesketh. Congratulations also to Robbie White, 4th, and Tristan Bird, 8th, who both competed well as they both finished their first season in that class. It was also the end of Charlie Whittingham’s first season in Class 11 (Honda), from a field of 16 he performed superbly to finish in 7th place. Congratulations to a busy Henry Kirby, who finished 1st out of a field of three in Class 8 and a creditable 9th in a field of 28 in Class 7

(TKM). Henry was in fact 1 of 10 TKT entrants in the ever popular Class 7 and as usual TKT fared very well. Here is how the other nine got on; in 1st place it was well done to David Haynes who completed his final Schools Karting event, congratulations also to Marcus Williams (5th), David Thorne (7th), Henry Kirby (9th), Reece Griffiths (11th), Lee Whittingham (13th), Amy Duke (16th), James Mills (17th), Dan Malyon (22nd) and Harry Jones (25th). From a field of 21 in Class 15 (Rotax) results were as follows, Connor Bailey competed well to finish5th, as did Tommy Taylor (13th), Dan Mills (20th) and Fraser Sime (21st). TKT are always on the look-out for new members so if you’d like to give karting a try please contact Howard Malyon on 07887 626 320 Pictured: James Mills, Kurt Roberts, Katie Prichard, Henry Kirby, Marcus Williams, not sure/not sure, Theo Hesketh, Reece Griffiths and Amy Duke

They reached the interior by boat, foot, and aeroplane, stayed in native longhouses in very primitive conditions, traversed precarious bridges, paths and rivers and even met a tribe of head hunters. They then found to their horror that there was no plane for the return journey and they had to walk!!! Undaunted, they set off and after walking for a long distance were very relieved when eventually they were rescued by jeep. We have regular theatre trips, excellent speakers, the Book Club and the Rambling Club continue to flourish – do come along to join us - our next meeting is on 3rd September when Jonathon O’Marah takes us into the world of antiques, you will be very welcome.
