Campaign to preserve the tree-lined streets of Handbridge A local campaigner is asking the council to give the tree-lined streets of Handbridge conservation area status. Reg Barritt, from the Handbridge Residents’ Council, wants to see protection for Appleyards Lane, Upper Hartington Street, Eaton Avenue and Eccleston Avenue. He believes that conservation status will ensure that the trees are retained, given that councils in other parts of the country have chopped trees down on the grounds of highway safety and because of the costs associated with maintaining them. He also wants the grass verges to be protected, by measures to keep a lid on front extensions which have had the effect of limiting parking at the front of properties, thereby shifting cars onto verges. Mr Barritt said: “Clearly there is an urgent need for this deteriorating situation to be addressed to secure the quality and nature of the verges and trees that remain.�
