Danny, champion of the computer games world A computer games expert from Little Neston has made it to the final of a national competition. Danny McCabe, from Turrocks Close, won Gold at the WorldSkills UK Skills Competition national finals in Birmingham. The 17-year-old West Cheshire College student, who delivers this magazine in Parkgate, said: “We prepared so much for this and all the hard work paid off, it is a fantastic achievement. I owe my win to my tutors, friends and family, who has been a huge support throughout the whole process. “The competition consisted of three days competing. On the first day we met with the other competitors and had a tour around of the NEC, we were also told how to deal with the crowds as we weren’t allowed to talk to them whilst we were competing”. “Then the competition really began, we had two full days 9-5pm with one hour for lunch where we had to develop different games, design 3D artwork for games and create different textures. The competition used assets from the game ‘Toybox Turbos’ made by Codemasters. The judges were from Codemasters and Rock Steady Studios. “I was competing with different students from across the country and then on the third day we all had to present to each other and the judges. We were then marked on our work. Whilst we were being marked we were able speak to the visitors, explaining all about design and 3D artwork to them, this was one of my favourite bits as it was a fantastic atmosphere to be around.” Danny, who is in his final year of college, said that he would like to go straight into work within the industry as a 3D art designer for games across the world.

Winter health fair

Residents had health checks, information and advice when they visited Neston Angels’ Winter Health Fair which had displays from 18 local and national organisations. Age UK, Alzheimer’s Society, Neston Library, and many more gathered under one roof at Neston Town Hall to give out information, guides and equipment, and sign people up to services. Health checks were carried out by Little Neston Surgery Staff, and visitors enjoyed free tea and cakes and reflexology tasters, as well as gaining information on a range of issues, including energy saving, benefits and carers support. The event was organised by Neston Angels as part of Keeping Well in West Cheshire, with the support of many different partners. Cheshire West and Chester Councillor Louise Gittins, Cabinet Member for Culture Leisure and Wellbeing said: “The event was a success and a great opportunity for residents to see the wide ranging information and support that is available in the local area from groups and organisations that encourage people to live independent and healthy lives.” For more information on Neston Angels, contact CAN Group on 0151 353 8638.

Mud, hills and fire can’t stop FIVE brave souls from Neston took part in a gruelling - and very muddy – race to raise funds for a heart disease charity. Craig Tierney, Daniel Griffiths, Michael Mosedale, Neil Forrest and Stuart Sadler made it to the finishing line of the Hellrunners event in Delamere Forest. Billed as the toughest half marathon in the country, runners had to scramble up muddy hills, battle through streams, fire and bogs before taking on a fearsome wall. The five were inspired to take on the torturous test in memory of Craig’s father Derek Tierney who died of a heart attack in 2013. Craig said: “We shared a very unique father and son relationship full of very fond memories that I will never forget. He inspired me to be a very strong individual and to never give up in what you believe in no matter what gets in my way. He always said to be positive and live life to full. I miss him dearly.” They raised £1200 for the British Heart Foundation and are planning to take on the equally hard Snowdonia Half Marathon in April. Craig explained that the Hellrunner was not an event to be taken lightly. He added: “We are all five best friends who have grown up together in Neston, all attending Neston

High and always maintaining a strong friendship and bond that I am sure will last for many years. “We enrolled ourselves in Hell Runner North 2015. It was six months of training for us all but we came to our big day all in good shape in October. Over 1500 runners took part but we all stuck together throughout the mixed terrain or bogs, cold lakes, forest trails and steep hills. We survived with team work and willpower, a fantastic true friendship crossing the finishing line arm in arm after 4 and a half hours of cruelness. Lord Lieutenant looks at literacy The Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, David Briggs, spent a morning at Neston High School to learn about the work it does with its mentoring and literacy programmes. He visited a number of different clubs at work in the school, such as the ‘Young Editors’ group in the Library – a team of young students who are editing books for a national publisher, ‘The Library Council’ who were discussing how to develop the library further and how to raise money for their chosen charities and the Reading Millionaires a group of high fliers who have read over a million words since September alone. Neston High School’s high profile Literacy programmes ensure that no child leaves school unable to read and central to this strategy is a team of dedicated practitioners, led by Kirsty Cunningham, assistant head teacher. She said: “We were delighted to host a visit for the Lord Lieutenant – his passion for reading, writing, mentoring and literacy matches ours at Neston and we hope to continue work with his support in the future.”

Parkgate pupils possess purple power! OVER the past two years, Parkgate Primary School Pupils and their Rotakids Club have held two cake sales and ‘Wear It Purple’ days to raise an amazing total of £655 for the Rotary Club’s ‘End Polio’ Campaign. This amount has since been trebled by Bill Gates to a staggering amount of £1, 965. The money raised will provide over 6,000 vaccines for children to help eradicate the disease in the last two remaining countries that have it - Afghanistan and Pakistan. Three cheers for business in Neston! THREE local businesses were recognised with special awards at a festive event in Neston. ‘Out of Office - a Christmas Celebration of Business in Neston’ was organised and sponsored by Neston Town Council and Neston & District Chamber of Trade, to bring local business people together to raise a glass to their efforts during the year. It was the first such event to be organised and was well attended, with guests commenting on how much they enjoyed the evening. Three businesses had been selected by the organisers to receive an award and the choices proved popular with attendees. Recipients were handed specially engraved awards from The Craftsman in Bridge Street. The awards were announced by Chair of Neston & District Chamber of Trade Carrie Spacey, and presented by the Mayor of Neston, Cllr Mike Shipman. They were also handed bottles of Champagne by Town Centre Manager Katy Pierce. Little Actors Theatre - New for 2016 Neston Young Writers

Little Actors Theatre Company is pleased to announce it will be offering a brand new project called Neston Young Writers. A pilot scheme offering six workshop sessions plus a rehearsed reading of the work created. The cost will only be £1 per session as it will be funded by Neston Town Council. This is open for 13-19 year olds. Three professional actors are booked to perform the new writing at a rehearsed reading presentation in March and they will be joined by members of Neston’s InterACT Youth Theatre. Over six sessions the young people will create a piece of new writing of their own. If they wish to collaborate they can - it’s totally up to them how they produce their work. They will

be tutored and mentored by Mike Lockley. Mike is an actor/scriptwriter. He runs his own theatre company and is also the drama director for Little Actors’ Theatre Clubs in Neston and Liverpool. The workshops will take place 7-9pm on Wednesdays at the NC&YC. Dates: January 13th and 27th; February 10th and 24th; March 2nd and 9th; March - Sunday 20th at 2-6pm - rehearsed reading.

Also new for 2016 will be a week day DramaTots class. This will be on a Tuesday at 9.30am at the NC&YC. This is an interactive class for pre-school children and their parents/carers comprising singing, dance and role play. Discounts are available.

Tap is Back

Little Actors Theatre is bringing back its adult Tap class. From Tuesday 12th January 2016 the class will take place at the NC&YC at 10.30am. The cost is £5 per class with a concessionary rate of £2.50. The class is aimed at beginners/intermediate and is a social way to keep fit. Happy Kat’s a super slimmer A Neston slimmer who says she feels like a new woman since losing 5st has been named the Neston British Legion Slimming World Group Woman of the Year because of her inspiring weight loss. Katrina Bradshaw has lost 5st in just 10 months. She was chosen to represent the Neston Slimming World group in the nationwide Slimming World Woman of the Year 2015 competition, which aimed to find the UK and Ireland’s top female slimmer. Katrina joined Slimming World at the end of February after becoming increasingly unhappy with her size. She says: “I don’t feel deprived and after losing 5 stones I’m the slimmest – and the happiest – I’ve been in such a long time!” The 35-year-old said: “When I started out I never dreamt I’d be able to achieve all that I have. I lost 5 1/2lbs in my first week and was blown away that the changes I’d made had such a big impact so quickly. As the weight started to come off and I began moving down dress sizes – I’ve gone from a size 22 to a 12 – I started to believe I could actually lose the weight and keep it off. Losing the weight has made such a huge difference – it’s changed my life. I’ve got so much more energy and I can do things with now that I couldn’t before. A new project for budding writers in Neston is being launched in the new year. Neston Young Writers is a two month scheme for 13-19-year-olds, organised by Little Actors Theatre Company. Three professional actors are booked to perform the new writing at a rehearsed reading presentation and they will be joined by members of Neston’s InterACT Youth Theatre Over six sessions the young people will create a piece of new writing of their own. If they wish to collaborate they can - it’s totally up to them how they produce their work. The workshops will take place at Neston Community and Youth Centre, Burton Road, from 7-9pm on Wednesdays: 13th and 27th January, 10th and 24th February and 2nd and 9th March, followed by a rehearsed reading on Sunday 20th March.
