Barnston mums have a little ‘me time’! The mums of Barnston Primary School have had a great month! The Parents’ Association held a Mother’s Day gift stall for the children to buy beautiful gifts and plants to show their love and appreciation. Later in the month they held a Ladies’ Night fundraiser at Franklyn’s Bar in Heswall. They enjoyed cocktails and nibbles while catching up with friends and having their nails done.

Working together for Heswall A NEW community organisation has been formed to represent the interests of residents, groups and businesses. Heswall Together aims to bring together lots of groups and give a more powerful voice to the town. Acting chairman Keith Foggin said: “We believe that such an organisation would give strength to the local community. “It would act as a “main door” into the community and internally have a number of benefits ranging from raising civic pride to finding local solutions to local problems and, not

least, encouraging the local economy. It would also give strength to Heswall’s Community Representative on Wirral South Constituency Committee.” Two public meetings have been set up in April for the public to get an idea of Heswall Together’s objectives. The dates are Tuesday 5th April, 2pm at Heswall Hall, and Thursday 7th April, 6:30pm at Heswall Hall. Mr Foggin added: “I should emphasise that it is not our intention that the new organisation should usurp

the current functions of any group but rather to encourage all to work together for the benefit of the whole community.” All are welcome at the public meeting. l Justine McLaughlin has been elected chairwoman of the Heswall and District Business Association, following the resignation of Abbas Hussain. Justine, from Whitfield Business Support, said: “We plan to build on the fabulous work done so far and really try and gain some more momentum throughout this year and offer support to all businesses.”

A lazy Sunday at the Gleg Hayley Ryder samples the menu at this well-known Heswall pub THE GLEGG ARMS is a traditional country pub right on your doorstep in Heswall with good parking, a huge outdoor area and a delicious new menu. What’s not to like? Having kindly been invited by the new owner to sample the latest menu, I opted for a Sunday evening booking. There’s a lot of choice on the menu with a large selection of starters, sharing platters, steaks, burgers, ribs, salads, chilli, chicken, seabass and much more! We opted for the sharing platter to start, ribs with chips, coleslaw and barbecue sauce and liver and onions for main.

The food was beautifully presented, tasty and good portion size. The ribs took up my plate, but who doesn’t love tucking into tasty comfort food on a lazy Sunday evening! We then went on to sample the salted caramel apple crumble and raspberry bakewell, both equally as tasty and a perfect end to our meal. The service throughout was impeccable, my glass was never empty and without being too much (as I dislike this during meals out) we were very well looked after. I liked the relaxed atmosphere throughout, cosy

Beefeater first fired up the grill in 1974, opening the doors to The Halfway House in Enfield. 40 years on, we now have over 140 restaurants nationwide. The combination of great steak, friendly service and relaxed surroundings first made Beefeater a big hit in Britain in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and today is no different... our customers continue to tell us it’s their local smiling team members that make them return time after time. Steak has always been and still is one of Britain’s most popular dishes and no one is better placed to serve the nation than us; serving over 12 million customers every year. Today we continue to hold a place in British hearts, serving up great tasting quality steak yet priding ourselves on a wide affordable menu from succulent chicken and fish to fresh salads and indulgent puddings. Everyone is welcome for a hearty breakfast, a big birthday celebration, a relaxed lunch or a quick drink – and regardless of the occasion, you can be assured of great British food and a welcoming smile.

Don’t take my word for it, sample it yourself, it’s on your doorstep and with tasty food, a huge menu, great service, indoor and outdoor seating well worth a visit.

Heswall fitness class celebrates 50th birthday On Sunday 10th April Fitness League members and teachers from around the North West will be joining the Heswall class for a day of ‘fun fitness’ celebrations in Heswall Hall. It will be quite an occasion for teacher, Janice Gronow and Heswall class members as they celebrate 50 years, a remarkable achievement! The class first opened its doors in 1965 at Alexander Hall to a long queue of people waiting to enrol. In those days the organisation was known as ‘The Women’s League of Health & Beauty’ and the class teacher was a lady called Mavis Budge. With numbers increasing weekly, once Heswall Hall was built the class moved and have since held their weekly exercise sessions in the main hall. To many of the class members the Fitness League has been a large part of their life. The whole body workout using music to make you want to move offers a complete approach to fitness which practised regularly helps to improve fitness as well as experiencing a wonderful sense of wellbeing. Not only is the exercise system beneficial in keeping fit, it’s a lovely way of socialising and making new friends within the community. To find out more visit the website www.thefitnessleague.com. Proceeds from the 50th anniversary celebrations are being donated to Wirral Hospice St John.

Coffee and culture collide HESWALL Primary School held its first multicultural coffee morning. Working closely with Tuyet Ramzy, from MEAS (Minority Ethnic Achievement Service), it provided an opportunity to learn more about spiritual, moral, social and cultural values (SMSC). After a brief presentation, the children joined their parents to learn about Chinese New Year, make a range of crafts and were taught how to write their name in Chinese writing. It was a huge success and almost 40 families came to work with their children from Reception right up to Year 6. Jon Lawrenson, deputy head teacher, joined the families for the morning and was thrilled with the number of mums, dads and grandparents that came. He said: “It was a fabulous morning and it was so pleasing to see the children working so happily with their parents. We have families in Heswall Primary from all over the world and it has been fantastic to celebrate different cultures in this way.” After the coffee morning, the Year Four class had a full session on Chinese culture.” The school’s next SMSC project is a ‘Multicultural Market’ which will focus on eight different cultures including Portuguese, Japanese, Welsh and Basque. All of the school’s 215+ children will take part and learn about different cultures that are also present in our local community.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

21

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and

Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Mother, Baby and Bowen Therapy During pregnancy Bowen Therapy has a very important role to play in the health care of women both during and after pregnancy. The Bowen Technique is integral for Mothers-To-Be as it is one of the only therapies that can be performed in its entirety, being very gentle, with the patient sitting down or lying on their side, whilst remaining clothed. Bowen Therapy can treat all common pregnancy pains from morning sickness and tiredness to physical pain such as back ache and sciatica and assist with digestive problems as well as psychological and emotional well-being. For new mothers Bowen is helpful in speeding recovery after birth. Treatment focuses on encouraging the uterus to contract and helping the pelvis to realign. The sooner after labour the mother comes for treatment, the more effective Bowen therapy will be. For babies Birth is one of the most traumatic processes a child will go through and Bowen Therapy can be given within days of birth. Bowen can be extremely effective in treating colic, digestive problems, chest infections and restlessness as it is gentle enough to be used on the most delicate of babies. As babies change so fast often the results can be seen during the course of the session. Bowen is generally pleasant to receive each session lasting 30 to 60 minutes. Many clients become so relaxed they fall asleep during treatment. For more information on Bowen Therapy refer to Wirral Bowen Therapy above and for other Bowen Therapy Professional Association members in your area visit www.bowen-therapy.co.uk or call 0844 561 7173

Rotary chief Jenny’s Indian visit LOCAL Rotarian Jenny Schwarz has been supporting National Immunisation Day by travelling to the most at risk areas of India to immunise thousands of children against Polio. Jenny, President of West Wirral Rotary Club, joined a group of 106 volunteers from across Great Britain & Ireland, the largest to have ever travelled, and met up with other Rotary International members from Belgium, Luxemburg, USA and Japan to help with the immunisation of children across the country. Although the country was declared free from the disease in 2014, there is still the real risk of re-infection from the cases found in nearby Pakistan and therefore it is essential that high levels of immunisation are maintained. Jenny, who travelled with the project for her 11th time, said: “It is incredible to think that since making the pledge in 1985 to eradicate polio, Rotarians have pulled together to combat the disease all over the world. Travelling to India and working with fellow Rotarians illustrates how important it is to be involved in community projects that are not just on your doorstep. It is a real privilege to support the local Rotarians in their humanitarian work.” Jenny added: “It’s important that we don’t lose momentum if we are going to beat this disease and the large group of Rotarians travelling out this year illustrates that we are still as passionate as ever. If you want to make a difference, you could join your local Rotary club or donate.” 26 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.heswall.com

LEGAL MATTERS Legal Column with Jackie Campion, Principal Solicitor at Campion Solicitors

The importance of having a Will AND keeping it up to date DIFFERENT organisations carry out surveys for different purposes, and a popular one with some charities is how many adults have not made a Will. The figure remains consistently around the 40% mark. Based on the 2011 census, this would mean approximately 20 million adults in the UK do not have a Will in place. Of course it also means around 60% do have a Will in place…. or do they? Here at Campion Solicitors we are very keen to encourage you to make a Will, and of equal importance is to keep it up to date. This month we thought a couple of real life examples might stir you into action to either make a Will or update the one you have.

‘I’LL GET AROUND TO IT’ An elderly local woman passed away. She had never married and never had children but was in touch with a couple of cousins living nearby, as well as her friends and neighbours, and she was an active supporter of local charities. It was known there was no Will, and she had often said ‘I’ll get around to it’. The closest cousin appointed a solicitor to help because when there is no Will, the estate is referred to as ‘intestate’ and there are rules and procedures that have to be followed. There was the cousin who lived nearby, another in Lancashire and another relative in North Wales. The cousins thought it was just a case of verifying the family connections and then distributing the estate according to the rules. To correctly confirm the entitlement under intestacy, it was necessary to undertake some family research. A few months later, a total of 45 verified entitled ‘blood’ relatives had been identified, some of whom were in the US, Africa, Europe and Australia, and most never knew the lady had even existed, and most didn’t know each other. Each of the proven relatives received a part of the estate. It was obvious this was not what the deceased would have wanted, but if there is no will, then this is what happens. There was also beneficiary number 46: H.M. Government; the single largest beneficiary by way of the inheritance tax that had to be paid.

‘I HAVE A WILL’ A Widow with no children made a Will leaving a specific legacy (an actual amount of money) to ‘my dear friend’ and the residue (the rest of the estate) to her brother with no alternative beneficiary. (The brother was divorced and estranged from his ex-wife and children.) When the Will was written, the Widow was living in rented property on modest means and so the legacy to the friend represented around half of her estate. The brother predeceased leaving his estate to the Widow, and so on her death, the friend received the legacy, but the residue was distributed as per the rules of intestacy to the brother’s estranged children. The Will was written in 1969, so the ‘dear friend’ received the legacy of £500, and the estranged children received around £400,000.

Please make a Will AND keep it up to date.

Beers Timber & Building Supplies celebrate their centenary BEERS Timber & Building Supplies Limited has had a continuous presence in Merseyside since 1916. A family firm, Beers was started by the great-grandfather of the current owners Michael and Alan Beer who are proud to have supplied timber and building supplies to so many building projects from the Liver Buildings and St. George’s Hall to Liverpool One as well, of course, to thousands of home extensions and building projects throughout Merseyside.

From humble beginnings in 1916 at the Albert Dock (left), when Beers was one of 200 timber importers in the thriving port city, the company is now one of only two of the original importers who remain . Beers Timber & Building Supplies has grown steadily including a presence in Heswall since 1996, first at Downham Road South, before moving to their current premises at Darlington’s Industrial Estate. There are now over 100 employees across Merseyside, working at depots not only in Heswall but also at branches in Liverpool (2), Bromborough and Warrington. Beers stock top quality laminate, engineered and solid flooring at affordable prices for all customers – be it trade, retail or DIY. They have thriving partnerships with major flooring suppliers such as Quick Step, Elka, Tega and also machine their own solid wood flooring.

See for yourself and meet the flooring experts on Saturday 16th April between 9.30am and 1.00pm at Beers Timber & Building Supplies, Darlington’s Industrial Estate, Chester Road CH60 3SG when many special offers will also be available.

Library and Waitrose update A BIG question mark still hangs over Heswall Library as a result of cuts at Wirral Council. Late last year the council announced its intention to embark on a ‘robust and meaningful consultation of the budget proposals. The Heswall Society is campaigning to keep the library open. Steve Anderson, acting chair of the society, said: “The Library is one of only a few places in Heswall that provides a valuable focus for the community and hence it is important that all efforts are made to keep it open.” The society wants the council to work with community groups and interested parties over the next year, to produce a model for an affordable library service that reflects its statutory duties and meets the needs of all Wirral residents.

l Discussions are continuing between Waitrose and Wirral Council over plans to open a new store in Heswall town centre. Waitrose has earmarked a site on Pye Road for its new store but admits that any new development remains some way off. A spokesman said “We are continuing to work with the developer to explore the possibility, but there is a long way to go before we might be in a position to share plans.”

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

COLOURFUL SPRING

APRIL is the month when plants really get going and I would like to start by looking at climbers, in particular Clematis. Spring gives a number of varieties to consider. Clematis armandii with larger, white slightly scented flowers is an evergreen climber which will flower even in darker corners of the garden. It needs a sheltered spot with moist well drained soil to do best and bear in mind it will cover a large area. I love Clematis alpina with small hanging bells of flowers in blue, white and pink. Clematis macropetala is particularly beautiful with delicate double flowers and does not get as woody as the alpina varieties. Prune just after flowering by cutting back a little if they get too large. Small perennials such as Allysum and Aubretia provide early season colour and another attractive alpine flower are Auriculas. Similar in size to Primroses they have velvety flowers in a wide range of colours. Very good for moist well drained soil in sun and dislike wet soil. If you have a woodland edge site with moist well drained soil try the stunning Dicentra spectabilis. It has arching stems with white or pink and white hanging flowers. It does die down later in the season but is lovely for a woodland garden. Plant alongside Epimedium a low growing perennial with glossy heart shaped leaves. In early spring they have new bronzy leaves and pale yellow or pink flowers depending on variety. Plant hardy annuals such as sunflowers, nasturtiums and marigolds out in the garden, where they are to flower. If the weather is mild later in April, sow seeds of lettuce, carrots and radishes outside. Make sure roses are fed and look out for aphids on new growth. Spray with a solution of washing up liquid to keep them at bay. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Briarfield near Burton on the Wirral is open on 24th April and has a couple of acres of gardens with alpines, bulbs and herbaceous borders with plants for sale. Janet Heath Garden Mentor

BOOKS with LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

By Kerry Keight

World Book Day is always special at Linghams. We invited a fabulous local author Adam Bestwick, who came read to some special guests from Heswall Primary (we were so impressed with kids on both sessions they were beyond amazing – the school and their parents should be super proud of them). In the afternoon we had a visit from Peter Pan who retold Roald Dahl’s Gruesome Tales with such relish! All the pupils made wonderful bookmarks depicting their favourite books or characters to celebrate World Book Day. Every year a series of 10 £1 books are released and each child across the UK is given a £1 World Book Day voucher to either buy one of the new books or use it against another book (we ran out of Adam’s books they were definitely very popular!) We can’t wait for World Book Day 2017! On 21st April we have the wonderful Julie Summers returning to Linghams who will be talking about and signing her books Jambusters and Fashion on a Ration Top: Adam Bestwick reading More Ketchup Please Left: Peter Pan just before he flew back to Never Never Land! The Spirit of London by Rob Keeley A gripping, mysterious tale which is sure to get you hooked. This evolves around Ellie who has moved from her gorgeous stately home into a grubby London flat. But when her mum gets a new job and ghostly messages start appearing, could the spirits be at work? Happy Reading! Reviewed by customer Sophia

Dreaming the Bear by Mimi Thebo

Brand new and beautifully presented books for those just venturing out as an independent reader. These are already proving to be very popular, and I am sure there will many more adventures to come, great for the horse-loving youngster.

Imagine being taken to live in the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park leaving behind the hubbub of your old life in London. A beautiful story of a growing bond between a teenager and a grizzly bear. This is not a sentimental story and can be quite harrowing (11+ and above) but definitely a highlight for me so far this year.
