SAFETY NEWS ON

Great communication between drivers, Distribution, Transport Manager, and customer to resolve safety observation.

Job stopped because of ground conditions causing punctures to trucks. Customer advised of safety concerns and backed up with pictures of damaged tyres by metal rebar. Customer sorted issues on the site and is paying for the damage on hauliers’ trucks. Was a quick and easy result from our shipping team and the customer.

Obstructions and overhead cables are dangerous, remember to always use your STOP assessment.

Charity bike ride

This year one of our Transport Account Managers Gareth has decided to take part in the cycle Kenya challenge to raise as much money as possible for Transaid. This is a 6-day mountain bike challenge where we will start from Nyeri at the foothills of Mount Kenya and cycle through the rough terrain and dry heat all the way to Lake Victoria in Kisumu totalling 474km.

Gareth said the main reason for his decision to participate in this challenge was the visit from Transaid in the Logistics conference back in the start of 2023. “It was at this point that I was introduced to the amazing work of the charity and the number of lives that are still with their loved ones because of them today.”

“I found the work Transaid do utterly amazing and then the star of the show stole my heart. The truly magnificent Ambulance Bike.

This basic piece of engineering that so many of us take for granted called a bicycle was modified with a towable trailer and introduced to enable medics to reach the unreachable sick in rural parts of Africa and treat or take to a medical centre for treatment. This piece of machinery recorded a massive 87% reduction of deaths in children under the age of 5 from severe malaria alone. I still get a lump in my throat every time I read that statistic.”

So far as a team we have completed many fundraisers from office auctions and dress up dress down days, to charity bike rides with my local rugby club Nantymoel RFC. On top of this we have also been blessed with some very friendly companies and hauliers who have been generous enough to sponsor my cycle jersey that I will be wearing throughout the challenge.

“So far, I am proud to be able to tell you that we have raised a staggering £6000 with over 4 months left to go.”

Please if you can help this great cause by gifting us any amount you can spare then get in touch and help change the world. facebook.com/Transaid/ transaidorg @transaidOrg linkedin.com/company/transaid/

REVERSE SMART AUTO BRAKING SYSTEM. SAVES LIVES!

Reverse Smart is a Radar Auto Braking system which at its core, uses radar auto braking technology to detect objects within its configurable danger zone. If the system detects a vulnerable road user or bollard it will promptly alerts the driver and, if required, will also stop the vehicle by engaging the service brake to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop.

HOW IT WORKS

A specific, feature is that the auto braking system will bring the vehicle to a reliable stop, as opposed to just applying the park brake, which could adversely impact the gearbox.

HOW IT WORKS

The Autobrake is pulsed to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop rather than a sudden jolt. This reduces any damage to the drive train or gearbox, which means that there is no warranty issues. We write the software which means we can tailor every installation to suit the vehicle application and the customer’s specific requirements. Reverse Smart is VCA approved and we as a designer/manufacturer are VCA audited to ensure conformity of production.

Health and safety are now one of the highest focus points that any organisation big or small must be aware off. We strongly believe that this system should be mandatory on most HGV’s and trailers. All fleet managers should consider this now for their fleets. The system will save money on frequent accidental repairs to rear light cluster, bumpers, doors etc as well saving lives!

Update to Tarmac Vehicle Specification: Radar Activated Auto-Braking System

From July 2024 all new vehicles entering an Independent Contract Haulier agreement with Tarmac will be required to have a radar activated auto-braking system, commonly known as a ‘radar banksman’ At this stage the specification will apply for new vehicles only and will not be applied to existing trucks in the fleet.

These systems are commonplace on Tarmac’s yellow plant, and we have been trialling them on HGVs over the last few months following a number of reversing incidents, including one where a truck delivering to a new housing development hit a contractor and knocked them over, nearly knocking them under the wheels. Many of you will have seen the footage from the reversing camera and will recognise how close this was to being a life changing incident. On other occasions trucks working for Tarmac have hit gateposts, customer cars and a supporting upright in a new-build warehouse. These incidents could all have been avoided if a radar banksman system had been fitted to the truck.

Specification:

enquiries@smfleet.co.uk

enquiries@smfleet.co.uk

• System should be activated only when reverse gear is selected.

• System to automatically brake the vehicle if an object is detected within two metres of the rear.

• System should not consider objects outside the width of the reversing vehicle.

• The system must not be able to be disabled from the cab and must be operational in all times while the vehicle is working for Tarmac.

• A temporary override button should be fitted to allow the driver to temporarily disable auto-brake while reversing under certain circumstances where it may be required such as reversing onto a paver. The temporary override should last no longer than sixty seconds.

• If the radar is not functioning it should display an alert to the driver.

Incident Alerts High Potential

Drivers put themselves at risk while undertaking some work at height

What happened

On a Sunday morning, two contractors were observed trying to attach new branding logos to their truck mixer. The contractors were seen using the site wheelie bin to access the truck mixer drum. The contractors were working without the correct permission, no Permit to Work had been issued and there was a significant lack of any personal protective equipment (PPE). Fortunately, a company vessel was moored on the neighbouring wharf and the crew observed the incident and STEPPED IN, with all works being stopped. The image below shows the drivers standing on wheelie bins.

Key findings

Look after yourself and each other - STOP & THINK behaviour not used. Safe System:

• Drivers returned to site out of production hours

• No Permit to Work was issued and the contractors worked without supervision

• Driver induction training completed, including Safety Essentials & MYSPACE elements

• Activity was not within the agreed Independent Haulage Contractor (IHC) permitted vehicle maintenance activities.

Working at height - inappropriate access used to work at height. Personal Protection Equipment - drivers did not wear PPE.

Learning/Action Points

HOW COULD THIS HAVE BEEN AVOIDED:

• Use STOP & THINK approach

• Compliance with site procedures, including obtaining a Permit to Work from a company representative and the requirement for supervision

• Follow Risk Assessment principles to identify the safest method of work.

KEY REVIEW POINTS

• Are IHC’s aware of permitted activities, including not working on site out of hours?

• When working at height, is there a Risk Assessment, Method Statement, Permit to Work and the correct equipment incorporating adequate fall protection?

• Are all relevant rules and procedures communicated and understood?

• Do we encourage and thank people for taking the time to STEP IN when unsafe activities or behaviours are observed?

This incident illustrates why it is so important to STOP & THINK before starting any task, and to remember it is essential to Look after Yourself, Look after Each Other. If one was reviewing this alert with your team, you may want to ask them what more we need to do to ensure everyone puts their health and safety first, always, and whether they would have Stepped In to keep their colleagues safe.

Useful Apps!

Bridgestone has launched what it calls the commercial motor industry’s first ever re-torque safety app for all commercial vehicle operators. The free Bridgestone Retorque app has been developed after research with all bus, truck and trailer original equipment manufacturers and will therefore offer the correct torque settings on all vehicles, free of charge, at the swipe of a mobile phone or tablet.

The Retorque app will be of use to anyone who removes and replaces truck wheels and Bridgestone plan to develop it further to include van data in the future. The safety implications from a detaching wheel from a truck, bus or trailer can be fatal, with research from road safety charity Brake highlighting the significance of the issue.

It’s estimated that several hundred wheel detachments occur each year in the UK, mostly involving large commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses.

If a wheel becomes detached while the vehicle is moving it can accelerate up to 93mph and would hit an oncoming vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist with incredible force. It can also cause the driver who has lost the wheel to lose control and crash.

Bridgestone’s product and marketing manager Andy Mathias said: “We decided to make it free of charge because the security and safety of commercial fleets is more important than creating revenue. So, it can be used by absolutely everyone, including our competitors and we would encourage people to download it when they can.”
