Induction

Driver Cards and Virtual Cards

• Tarmac driver induction card

• Valid driving licence for the specific vehicle type

• Driver Qualification Card (CPC)

• MPQC / MP Connect Card

• Tacho Card (Drivers Card)

Drivers should carry these cards with them at all times. All records must be kept up-to-date.

NO ONECARD - NO LOAD

Virtual OneCard and the Vircarda app

OneCard system allows card holders to hold both a Physical and Virtual card, or only one of these.

The virtual card is maintained in a virtual wallet app called Vircarda, which is stored on the card holder’s mobile device (either Android or iOS).

The virtual card QR code can be scanned/swiped in the same way as the physical card, allowing to verify, competencies.

When a cardholder uses their virtual OneCard on site, the smart QR code generated through the Vircarda app refreshes every 30 seconds or when scanned. The Vircarda app must be used to generate the QR code every time a cardholder swipes into a site or is requested to present their OneCard.

Benefits of a virtual card

• Reminder of competences due to expire 3 months prior to expiry and day competence is due to expire. This allows time to get booked on to training or update competence to stop any delays in being loaded

• Safety alerts and video direct to Vircarda app

• Any messaging direct to Vircarda app.

SAFETY

Get a grip

Always ensure that 3 points of contact are maintained by facing the vehicle cab on entry and exit.

We have recently had several incidents on our sites in the South East recently where trucks have collided with site barriers, gates etc causing damage to property.

The incidents in themselves are a concern and are investigated to find out the root cause, but a serious issue for the transport team is that several of these incidents have not been reported by the driver and/or haulier at the time,

No surprise rule

and have only been picked up later due to the damage being noticed by the site team and/or site cctv footage reviewed. Relevant drivers have been suspended with immediate effect by the Transport Team.

This is totally unacceptable, and all drivers are made aware of the reporting requirements when they are inducted by the Transport Team. There is no reason any incident should not be reported to the site team, planning team, or transport team at the time of the incident.

All safety incidents, accidents and near hits must be notified to Tarmac as soon as it is safe to do so.

Load security Wheel Nut Indicators

MPA Drivers handbook

Please make sure your drivers have a copy of the MPA Drivers handbook.

You would think that in this new-found age of Health and Safety that accidents involving detached vehicle wheels would be a thing of the past. Unfortunately, you’d be wrong, and a quick online news search would unfortunately yield numerous results that show that the devastating, and often life threatening, consequences of a detached wheel are all too commonplace. With a multitude of wheel safety devices available, one of the longest serving solutions has been the wheel nut indicator. Used effectively for over 20 years to provide a visual warning of any change in wheel nut integrity, giving drivers that all-important early warning sign that a wheel nut has lost tension and could cause a serious accident if left unattended. Whilst visual indicators are a brilliant tool to minimise the risk of wheel detachment, they don’t prevent wheel loss, they simply provide a visual cue of any issues.

We are receiving several complaints from members of the public about loose materials in various forms (usually claiming damage to property). The highways agency reported several thousand road impact incidents was caused by objects falling from vehicles. This is dangerous to all road users. This resulted in the closure of either a single lane or the full carriageway. This places a significant financial burden on the UK economy from: time wasted in traffic, damage to goods, damage to infrastructure.

So please remind your drivers the importance of load security before going back onto the highway.

Rollovers HIGHLIGHTS Safety

Truck Mixer and Highway Stability

Be aware of additional risks when travelling to nd from sites. Mixers are more vulnerable due to higher centre of gravity, spinning drum and dynamic loads.

Adjust speed of mixer drum to reflect the condition of the road.

DON’T - drive too fast going through bends, roundabouts and corners

DON’T - hit or ride kerbs

DON’T - make sudden or harsh steering inputs

DON’T - brake suddenly or harshly

DON’T - ignore the camber of the road in relation to stability.

The best way to avoid an overturn is:

Safe speed

Always adopt a cautious speed and go slow when approaching, entering, driving through or exiting a bend, roundabout or corner. An increase in speed around a corner as little as 3 miles per hour can increase the chance of an overturn by as much as 20%.

Safe load

When transporting ‘sticky’ concrete, with a slump 20-50mm, avoid rotating the drum during travel.

Seatbelt

Always wear a seatbelt, just incase you are involved in an overturn incident - it could save your life.

Key to VUE’s expertly crafted solution is Pedestrian AI; an innovative camera system that detects when vulnerable road users are in areas of risk around a vehicle. The device provides real-time visual and audible alerts in-cab to make the driver aware of the potential danger. An HD image highlights the risk, helping drivers manoeuvre with more awareness and avoid incidents.

As the technology only triggers an alert when the presence of a human is detected rather than a static object, this prevents excessive alerting, making it a solution that drivers can trust.
