I am a part II architect based in London with over one year of professional experience. I graduated from the School of Architecture University of Limerick with first class honours in 2022. Since then I have developed my design, representation and technical detailing skills in my role as part II architect at Axo Architects.

Education

Following my studies, I spent two months volunteering with the Icelandic Forestry Service. The main objectives being; to assist with the maintenance of the hiking trails in the Thórsmörk and Goðaland glacial valley, to implement a variety of practical nature conservation techniques in the area and to assist in the construction of functional shelters using readily available materials and sustainable construction methods such as turf walling, lumber joinery, dry stone masonry and pallet flooring.

My proficiency in utilizing the latest design software and technology, paired with a keen eye for detail and clear presentation style allowed me to bring meaningful inputs to any project I was tasked with.

Duties included: preparing planning applications, compiling detailed tender packages, writing contractor’s schedule of works, preparing site-issue service co-ordination drawings, developing client presentations using a variety of digital and sketch media.

I was involved in the preparation of window joinery packages, 3-d modelling, client presentations, developing site strategies for new projects and communicating with engineers, contractors and manufacturers.

UR BA N R E ALM Be sp oke fu rni t ur e and c af e des ign The brief for this project was to address challenges of accessibility, shelter and orientation at the main entrance to a National Museum. I designed a series of bespoke urban furniture elements which address these issues and elevate what were once dead spaces to enticing spaces for visitors to gather and sit. Modular furniture wraps the building matching the rhythms in the classical palladian facade.

I was involved in the design, 3D modelling and rendering of this presentation.

I developed an initial design for a shelter structure at a public tourist attraction in the west of Ireland. The brief required the provision of shelter, seating, welfare facilities and bus stopping area.

The circular design encourages flow of people through the scheme and the curved walls allow for directional signage for visitors to orientate themselves. The structure seeks to offer sanctuary and shelter but also embrace the harshness of the climate and landscape by allowing weather into the space.

I developed a feasibility study and graphic presentation for the upgrade of tour guide huts, accessibility and welfare facilities at the Neolithic passage tomb of New Grange. I conducted an analysis of existing structures, access routes, challenges and opportunities.

I created a digital image of the monument and its surroundings, which acted as a live drawing for the client an design team to engage with. It was a very clear and effective way for us to communicate our ideas and findings to the wider the wider group.

The sensitive nature of a 5000 year heritage site meant the proposal was highly restricted at ground level and all interventions had to be agreed with UNESCO archaeologists and the National Monument Service. This was a unique experience to work so closely with other professionals to come to a sensitive for an extremely important site.

During my time at Axo Architects I was extensively involved in the preparation of a successful planning application for the construction of a new horse riding club and restoration and extension to the existing manor house and surrounding out buildings.

The sensitive location and heritage of the site required extensive ecological, archaeological and heritage impact reports to ensure a successful planning application. I took the lead in biweekly design team meetings to ensure we were hitting project targets and fulfilling the desires of the client.

T HE S I S My thesis was a study of the urban condition that engages with ideas of formal and informal public life, in an endeavour to curate a responsive architectural attitude to designing in an urban context.

My chosen locus was the region of Dublin’s inner city commonly known as the Liberties. This is a historically disadvantaged area of the inner city which faces socio-economic issues. In recent years this area has also come under the threat of commodity based developments which don’t serve the needs of the community. These private developments are rapidly generating dead spaces within the locus and are conducive to the exclusivity of facilities , especially for young people in the area.

My chosen site is located just north of Thomas Street, the first medieval passage to the city from the west. The site can be understood as a void in the urban block at a focal point in the urban plan. My proposal of a community theatre and arts centre intends to harness the rich social life of the street. My architecture intends to create a robust public realm that can act as a ‘living room’ for the city community.

A true public space should be accessible to the public at all times. It should be governed by members of the community. Groups can gather and use the space in a variety of ways depending on the time of day/year. The building is robust yet flexible enough to allow for these varying uses.

Spaces which operate as exhibition spaces during the day can become performance spaces or floating night markets. The creation of a new public boulevard adjacent to the building provides a safe guard of passive surveillance.

Key Plan - Farm Buildings at Ballyneety

M AT ER IA L S U RV E Y S During my fourth year at the University of Limerick I carried out this study at Ballyneety Farm, County Limerick. I spent several days surveying the farm buildings which had all been altered over time to adapt to the various uses of the farm.

The work culminated in a series of detail surveys, photographs and an inventory of the objects present at the time of the survey. This was an exercise in creating a capsule of information to serve as a historic marker in an every changing and developing environment.

SA RS FI EL D H O US E Adaptive Re-use - fourth year project This project explores the opportunities of carefully dismantling elements of Sarsfield House and the adjacent Opera Site in order to re purpose and re-assemble them as new interventions to the site.

The brief is made up of a new public gallery with a direct link to the Hunt Museum which can house archived materials and art restoration spaces, a library and archive for the school of design which will be moving to the adjacent Dunnes site and student accommodation with communal recreational facilities throughout.

The existing ground scape around Sarsfield House is made up of impermeable paving which acts as a basin which fills up during flooding. I will be removing 82.5 granite panels from the façade and re-purposing them as 339m2 of permeable paving to attempt to alleviate the effects of flooding on the site. In this way we can begin to see Sarsfield House as a resource which can be utilised to increase its own longevity.
