TRINIDAD TIDINGS
a holiday celebration for steel band INSTRUMENTATION Pans • Lead • Double seconds • Guitar or cello • Bass
Engine Room • Drumset • Percussion—brake drum, congas
Trinidad Tidings is an island-flavored mash-up of Joy to the World, Deck the Halls, Ode to Joy, and The Hallelujah Chorus. Written in both soca and calypso styles, it isn’t the standard arrangement of holiday tunes. This version for steel band is also compatible with my percussion ensemble version, so feel free to combine them for an extra large, festive experience! Since a conductor isn’t necessarily required, consider allowing the ensemble to use the drumset player as an anchor. If more players are available, consider doubling the pan parts or supplementing accessory percussion parts (à la “engine room”) to liven up the festivities.
