INTroDUCTION

Time Out, Game On! is a collection of short drumline cadences, also known as “stand” cadences. These pieces are often played during football games in the stands during timeouts or between plays but can also be used in many other settings, such as pep rallies, parades, and more. With a variety of styles and difficulty levels, they are practical and playable by most high school or college drumlines. On top of that, these grooves are designed to be crowd-friendly and easy for dance teams or cheer squads to adapt basic routines to if they choose.

Several pieces start with a drum cue (rather than being counted off) for easier and faster startup during critical moments. Every drumline is called upon to keep the energy high and should have a collection of these types of pieces in their back pocket ready to play at a moment’s notice. Have fun!

NOTATION KEY

* Tenors are written for 6 drums, but if playing on a set of 5 drums, simply play both spock parts on the single spock drum.

Short Grooves

These pieces are great for those moments where a simple, repetitive drumline groove is needed. All may be repeated as few or as many times as desired. These are short, quickly learned, and very playable—perfect for any situation!

Stand Cadences

Boom

Medium • Page 10

Boom is a medium-slow tempo stand cadence that can keep going as long as you need. The main groove is one that has been passed down in different contexts from previous drumlines and cadences. It can also be a useful addition to, or transition from, another beat or cadence.

Done

Med-Advanced • Page 11

Done is a medium-tempo stand cadence that has a strong half-time groove in the first half, followed by a backbeat groove in the second half.

Vendimac

Med-Advanced • Page 12

Vendimac is a fast, high-energy stand cadence whose main groove was derived from a percussion piece that was written to be performed with a vending machine and 65 cents. It has been used by a couple of big university drumlines and has occasionally been heard on TV during NCAA football games!

Densha is based on rhythms that some of the trains in Japan “play” as they pass through the stations. It can keep going as long as you want, and it lends itself well to adding in more fills later.

Showtime!

Showtime! is a medium-tempo stand cadence that is groove oriented in the first half and busy in the second half. The repetitive nature of it makes it perfect for various situations, whether you need short bursts of energy or sustained hype!

Wataru

Wataru is a stand cadence that is fast and energetic but with a half-time feel right in the middle that should either get things going or keep them going!

CT Med-Advanced • Page 18

CT is a stand cadence that is meant to be vibrant and lively, and it has a tenor cue to start things off quickly and easily.

Lemon Slushy

Med-Advanced • Page 20

Lemon Slushy is a soca-esque stand cadence that has both feel and momentum, inspired by the renewed energy one feels after drinking one of those ice cold drinks on a hot day during a football game. This one can keep going as long as you want, and the break at the end of each sequence is for the drumline to put in visual stick clicks.

Electric Toothbrush

Electric Toothbrush is based on a tenor groove that has been passed down through many years of drumline and drum corps and has appeared in different forms in various cadences. It works nicely by itself or can be added to any number of other grooves that your group may be playing. The title is a nod to a popular cadence that this groove actually made it into.

Ybor is another high-energy stand cadence and starts with a bass drum call. It can be repeated for as long as you need, and the last part includes a high-stick-height split option for snares and tenors. If you don’t have enough personnel for the suggested split, be creative with your own!
