IAN ALWARD FINDING HOME for solo marimba
PROGRAM NOTES
Finding Home is a four-mallet marimba solo I composed during the months I went back to my hometown of Owensboro, Kentucky, during the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time I was halfway through my coursework at Middle Tennessee State University and only had access to a low A marimba. The limited range ruled out a large portion of solo marimba literature, so I chose to experiment and compose new music using permutations I found interesting. That is what inspired me to write Finding Home, which focuses on a constant permutation that ebbs and flows in time and harmony. Throughout the piece you will hear struggle and pain that over time turns into beautiful discoveries.

PERFORMANCE NOTES
Experiment with time and space throughout the piece! It is one thing to perform this solo very accurately, but what makes it “sing” is the effective use of rubato and dynamic contrast that might not necessarily be written in the score. The performer’s emotions should be reflected through the performance.
Mallet selection is up to the performer, but I recommend a medium to medium soft mallet to create a mysterious and flowing atmosphere throughout the permutations.
