ALBERT HAY MALOTTE
THE LORD’S PRAYER
for solo marimba
arranged by Julia Gaines This piece was formulated when I traveled with the Percussive Arts Society delegation to Russia in 1989. Led by John H. Beck from The Eastman School of Music, I joined several percussionists, including vaudeville xylophonist Val Eddy and his wife, on this life-changing trip. Val had always played his arrangement of The Lord’s Prayer on the xylophone when he performed his concerts and I found that hilarious. Of all the non-chorale instruments you could name, the xylophone is probably first on the list. I asked him if he had ever tried it on marimba and if I could play around with it for another arrangement. My father was a pastor at the time and as I was working on it, he suggested adding Amazing Grace into the middle section. The meaning behind the lyrics always comes more alive for me when I play it in a church. I am truly grateful to my Lord and Saviour for the talent he has bestowed on me and always try to play for his glory. –Julia Gaines
