Program Notes Monica was my first love. As with many relationships from our earlier years, ours was short-lived, but we remained close friends for as long as she was alive. One April night in 2006 I wrote and recorded myself playing guitar and singing a song I later called “topnight” (with a silent ‘p’). I wasn’t particularly skilled at either guitar or singing, but Monica was one of my only friends at the time with whom I was comfortable sharing such vulnerability. Only days after I shared the recording with her, she took her own life. It is a terrible sadness to have to wish Monica could still be here. She was an amazing friend, extremely intelligent and kind. She had the most beautiful eyes. Though I may never understand why she is gone, I think it is most important for me to remember that she was a wonderful person and will always be loved. One of the last interactions Monica and I had was talking about “topnight,” so I used its improvised and simple melodies as source material for Song for Monica. I am amazed when I consider that this piece is comprised of things she once heard and enjoyed. Song for Monica represents my grief, the sadness of our loss, and serves as a reflection on the living memory of my dear friend Monica. I extend my sincerest appreciation to everyone who supported my venture in creating this composition and especially to Monica’s family for sharing their daughter and sister with all of us who were fortunate to have experienced her friendship. —Rod Kosterman

Performance Notes Solid brackets indicate full pedal. Dashed brackets indicate half pedaling. Notes with a stacatto marking are to be played as dead strokes. Grace notes with an x notehead indicate mallet dampening. Grace notes connected by a line to the note immediately preceding it are dampened by sliding from the primary note to the grace note. Grace notes with an x notehead that immediately follow a note of the same pitch are to be dampened by the mallet in the opposite hand. This should occur at the precise moment that the note following the grace note is struck. Diamond notehead (measure 118) indicates a naturally sounding harmonic when this chord is struck.
