PROGRAM NOTES Singularity Triptych is a three-movement work for a solo percussionist playing multiple instruments. Each movement is a musical representation of a different visual art work. The first movement is based on Edward Hopper’s Excursion into Philosophy (1959), the second movement is based on Alberto Giacometti’s Walking Man (1960), and the third movement is based on Winslow Homer’s The Gulf Stream (1899). Each of these art works captures various characteristics of the human individual as a subject. Similarly, each of the three movements of Singularity Triptych captures the essence of the individual spirit, while recognizing each artist’s visual depiction of individuality. This piece was the result of a commission by the Asheville Ballet. It was premiered on May 8, 2015, for the Asheville Ballet’s “Spring Awakenings” performance at the Diana Wortham Theatre in Asheville, North Carolina. Victoria Nelson was the soloist.
PERFORMANCE NOTES The setup of the various instruments should be done in a way that is most comfortable for the performer. A suggested setup is to have a similar configuration to a set of timpani with the bass drum (lowest drum) on the player’s left side and the other three toms placed adjacent to the bass drum. Concert toms or toms from a drumset might be used. The bell plates and triangles for the first movement should be placed next to each other to facilitate the melodic line of metal timbres. It is recommended the performer have a very large and low-pitched suspended cymbal for the first movement only. This cymbal should be placed to the player’s left side, near the toms and bass drum, to facilitate easier control of the ostinato. If the player is left-handed, this configuration should be reversed. For the muted triangles in the third movement, the performer may use the suspended triangles from the first movement. To do this, both mounted triangles should be removed and placed on a padded surface. To minimize changes in the instrument configuration, the player might also opt to use two additional triangles exclusively for the third movement. If the triangles move around, the player might consider using some sort of tape to prevent them from moving when struck on the padded surface. While approximate pitches and sizes of all the instruments are left to the discretion of the performer, there should be a wide enough frequency range between each set of instruments to provide a distinct melodic line. Lastly, projecting or otherwise displaying the individual art pieces during the performance of each movement can greatly enhance the audience’s engagement with the work as a whole.
INSTRUMENTATION Singularity Triptych requires the following instrumentation: • 3 concert toms (low, medium, and high) • Large bass drum (mounted flat) • Hi-hat • 5 suspended cymbals • Tam-tam • 2 bell blates (suspended) • 2 or 4 triangles (muted and supended)
